RESUMO

Chronic hypoxia, common in neonates, disrupts gut microbiota balance, which is crucial for brain development. This study utilized cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD) patients and a neonatal hypoxic rat model to explore the association. Both hypoxic rats and CCHD infants exhibited brain immaturity, white matter injury (WMI), brain inflammation, and motor/learning deficits. Through 16s rRNA sequencing and metabolomic analysis, a reduction in B. thetaiotaomicron and P. distasonis was identified, leading to cholic acid accumulation. This accumulation triggered M1 microglial activation and inflammation-induced WMI. Administration of these bacteria rescued cholic acid-induced WMI in hypoxic rats. These findings suggest that gut microbiota-derived cholic acid mediates neonatal WMI and brain inflammation, contributing to brain immaturity under chronic hypoxia. Therapeutic targeting of these bacteria provides a non-invasive intervention for chronic hypoxia patients.

Soft electronic circuits are crucial for wearable electronics, biomedical technologies, and soft robotics, requiring soft conductive materials with high conductivity, high strain limit, and stable electrical performance under deformation. Liquid metals (LMs) have become attractive candidates with high conductivity and fluidic compliance, while effective manufacturing methods are demanded. Digital light processing (DLP)-based projection lithography is a high-resolution and high-throughput printing technique for primarily polymers and some metals. If LMs can be printed with DLP as well, the entire soft devices can be fabricated by one printer in a streamlined and highly efficient process. Herein, fast and facile DLP-based LM printing is achieved. Simply with 5-10 s of patterned ultraviolet (UV)-light exposure, a highly conductive and stretchable pattern can be printed using a photo-crosslinkable LM particle ink. The printed eutectic gallium indium traces feature high resolution (≈20 µm), conductivity (3 × 106 S m-1 ), stretchability (≈2500%), and excellent stability (consistent performance at different deformation). Various patterns are printed in diverse material systems for broad applications including stretchable displays, epidermal strain sensors, heaters, humidity sensors, conformal electrodes for electrography, and multi-layer actuators. The facile and scalable process, excellent performance, and diverse applications ensure its broad impact on soft electronic manufacturing.

In this work, we report the electrochemical reactivity of MoTe2 for various metal ions with special emphasis on Al3+ ion storage in aqueous electrolytes for the first time. A stable discharge capacity of 100 mA h g-1 over 250 cycles at a current density of 1 Ag-1 could be obtained for the Al3+ ion, whereas inferior storage capacities were shown for other metal ions.

As the soaring demand for energy storage continues to grow, batteries that can cope with extreme conditions are highly desired. Yet, existing battery materials are limited by weak mechanical properties and freeze-vulnerability, prohibiting safe energy storage in devices that are exposed to low temperature and unusual mechanical impacts. Herein, a fabrication method harnessing the synergistic effect of co-nonsolvency and "salting-out" that can produce poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel electrolytes with unique open-cell porous structures, composed of strongly aggregated polymer chains, and containing disrupted hydrogen bonds among free water molecules, is introduced. The hydrogel electrolyte simultaneously combines high strength (tensile strength 15.6 MPa), freeze-tolerance (< -77 °C), high mass transport (10× lower overpotential), and dendrite and parasitic reactions suppression for stable performance (30 000 cycles). The high generality of this method is further demonstrated with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and poly(N-tertbutylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) hydrogels. This work takes a further step toward flexible battery development for harsh environments.

BACKGROUND: Studies focused on pregnant women with congenital heart disease (CHD)-associated pulmonary hypertension (PH) are scarce and limited by small sample sizes and single-center design. This study sought to describe the pregnancy outcomes in women with CHD with and without PH. METHODS: Outcomes for pregnant women with CHD were evaluated retrospectively from 1993 to 2016 and prospectively from 2017 to 2019 from 7 tertiary hospitals. PH was diagnosed on the basis of echocardiogram or catheterization. The incidence of maternal death, cardiac complications, and obstetric and offspring complications was compared for women with CHD and no PH, mild, and moderate-to-severe PH. RESULTS: A total of 2220 pregnant women with CHD had completed pregnancies. PH associated with CHD was identified in 729 women, including 398 with mild PH (right ventricle to right atrium gradient 30-50 mm Hg) and 331 with moderate-to-severe PH (right ventricle to right atrium gradient >50 mm Hg). Maternal mortality occurred in 1 (0.1%), 0, and 19 (5.7%) women with CHD and no, mild, or moderate-to-severe PH, respectively. Of the 729 patients with PH, 619 (85%) had CHD-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension, and 110 (15%) had other forms of PH. Overall, patients with mild PH had better maternal outcomes than those with moderate-to-severe PH, including the incidence of maternal mortality or heart failure (7.8% versus 39.6%; P<0.001), other cardiac complications (9.0% versus 32.3%; P<0.001), and obstetric complications (5.3% versus 15.7%; P<0.001). Brain natriuretic peptide >100 ng/L (odds ratio, 1.9 [95% CI, 1.0-3.4], P=0.04) and New York Heart Association class III to IV (odds ratio, 2.9 [95% CI, 1.6-5.3], P<0.001) were independently associated with adverse maternal cardiac events in pregnancy with PH, whereas follow-up with a multidisciplinary team (odds ratio, 0.4 [95% CI, 0.2-0.6], P<0.001) and strict antenatal supervision (odds ratio, 0.5 [95% CI, 0.3-0.7], P=0.001) were protective. CONCLUSIONS: Women with CHD-associated mild PH appear to have better outcomes compared with women with CHD-associated moderate-to-severe PH, and with event rates similar for most outcomes with women with CHD and no PH. Multimodality risk assessment, including PH severity, brain natriuretic peptide level, and New York Heart Association class, may be useful in risk stratification in pregnancy with PH. Follow-up with a multidisciplinary team and strict antenatal supervision during pregnancy may also help to mitigate the risk of adverse maternal cardiac events.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between morphological variation and postsurgical pulmonary vein (PV) stenosis (PPVS) in patients with cardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC). METHODS: This single-center, retrospective study included 168 pediatric patients who underwent surgical repair of cardiac TAPVC from 2013 to 2019 (connection to the coronary sinus [CS], n = 136; connection directly to the right atrium [RA], n = 32). Three-dimensional computed tomography modeling and geometric analysis were performed to investigate the morphological features; their relevance to the PPVS was examined. RESULTS: The connection type had no association with PPVS (CS type: 18% vs right atrial type: 19%; P = .89) but there was a higher incidence of PPVS in patients with a single PV orifice than > 1 orifice (P < .001). Confluence-to-total PV area ratio (hazard ratio, 4.78, 95% CI, 1.86-12.32; P = .001) and length of drainage route (hazard ratio, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.14-1.31; P < .001) had a 4- and 1-fold increase in the risk for PPVS in the CS type after adjustment for age and preoperative pulmonary venous obstruction. In the right atrial type, those with anomalous PV return to the RA roof were more likely to develop PPVS than to the posterior wall of the RA (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The number of inter-junction PV orifice correlated with PPVS development in cardiac TAPVC. The confluence-to-total PV ratio, length of drainage route, and anomalous PV return to the RA roof are important predictors for PPVS. Morphological subcategorization in this clinical setting can potentially assist in surgical decision-making.

Ovarian cancer is currently the most lethal gynecological cancer. At present, primary debulking surgery combined with platinum-based chemotherapy is the standard treatment strategy for ovarian cancer. Although cisplatin-based chemotherapy has greatly improved the prognosis of patients, the subsequent primary or acquired drug resistance of cancer cells has become an obstacle to a favorable prognosis. Mortalin is a chaperone that plays an important role in multiple cellular and biological processes. Our previous studies have found that mortalin is associated with the proliferation and migration of ovarian cancer cells and their resistance to cisplatin-based chemotherapy. In this study, microRNA (miR)-200b/c downregulated mortalin expression and inhibited the proliferation and migration of the paired cisplatin-sensitive (A2780S) and cisplatin-resistant (A2780CP) epithelial ovarian cancer cell lines. Moreover, miR-200c increased the sensitivity of ovarian cancer cells to cisplatin treatment by regulating mortalin levels. Nuclear factor (NF)-κB directly regulated mortalin and miR-200b/c expression levels, while NF-κB and miR-200b/c jointly regulated the expression of mortalin. The combination of cisplatin and miR-200c significantly enhanced the therapeutic effects on ovarian cancer in vivo, suggesting that miR-200c may serve as a potential therapeutic agent for ovarian cancer.

Objective: The present study objectives were to determine the prevalence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms (ADHD-like symptoms) in children and adolescent with d-transposition of great artery (D-TGA) after arterial switch operation (ASO) and examine associated risk factors and adverse personal, family dysfunctions. Methods: This cohort study included 103 patients with D-TGA who underwent ASO in early infancy at Shanghai Children's Medical Center between 2011 and 2016 and then follow-up. Data analysis was conducted from September 2020 to April 2022. A standardized Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham IV (SNAP-IV) questionnaire is used to evaluate inattention and hyperactivity symptoms. Demographic, preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative factor were collected. Univariate and multivariable regression analyses were performed with odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Prevalence of ADHD-like symptoms was 27.18% (28/103). Attention-deficit (18/28, 64.29%) symptom was the predominant subphenotype. After underwent TGA surgery, 39% of patients with ADHD-like symptoms receive remedial special academic services. There is none had repeated grade. Univariate analysis showed that, positive inotropic drug score (P = 0.03) and delayed sternal closure (P = 0.02) were risk factors of ADHD-like symptoms; increased preoperative oxygen saturation (SpO2) (P = 0.01) and surgical height (P = 0.01) and TGA subtype (VSD) (P = 0.02) were protective factor of ADHD-like symptoms. Multivariable analysis showed that delayed sternal closure (DSC) (OR, 1.50; 95% CI, 1.02-2.18) is a risk factor for the occurrence of ADHD-like symptom while increased preoperative oxygen saturation [odds ratio (OR), 0.95; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.92-0.99] is a protective factor of ADHD-like symptom. Conclusion: The children and adolescents with D-TGA after ASO were at high risk of ADHD-like symptoms. Preoperative hypoxic status and postoperative DSC became predominant risk factors. Modification of the risk factors may be helpful to relieve ADHD-like symptoms for these patients.

A chitosan composite with a vertical array of pore channels is fabricated via an electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique. The composite consists of chitosan and polyethylene glycol, as well as nanoparticles of silver oxide and silver. The formation of hydrogen bubbles during EPD renders a localized increase of hydroxyl ions that engenders the precipitation of chitosan. In addition, chemical interactions among the constituents facilitate the establishment of vertical channels occupied by hydrogen bubbles that leads to the unique honeycomb-like microstructure; a composite with a porosity of 84%, channel diameter of 488 µm, and channel length of 2 mm. The chitosan composite demonstrates an impressive water uptake of 2100% and a two-stage slow release of silver. In mass transport analysis, both Disperse Red 13 and ZnO powders show a much enhanced transport rate over that of commercial gauze. Due to its excellent structural integrity and channel independence, the chitosan composite is evaluated in a passive suction mode for an adhesive force of 9.8 N (0.56 N cm-2 ). The chitosan composite is flexible and is able to maintain sufficient adhesive force toward objects with different surface curvatures.

Background: Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCL) are aggressive lymphomas with poor prognosis, and therefore, there is a pressing need to explore new targets or compounds. Mitochondria may serve as a potential therapeutic target for PTCL. A designed positively-charged segment (pKV) is anchored to the specific 15 amino acid sequence (MIASHLLAYFFTELN) to yield a cell-penetrating peptide (pHK-pKV) and a lipid chain (Pal) is conjugated to the N-terminus of pHK-pKV (Pal-pHK-pKV) are bioactive amphiphilic peptide assemblies targeting the interaction between mitochondrial voltage dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1) and hexokinase II (HKII). Methods: PTCL cell line H9 was treated with Pal-pHK-pKV and pHK-pKV, respectively. Cell proliferation in each group was measured by detecting cell viability and the corresponding marker Ki-67. Apoptosis was detected by immunofluorescence, flow cytometry and western blot. We also measured mitochondrial membrane potential, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production, the cytochrome c distribution and the expression levels of B cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2) and BCL-2 associated X protein (BAX). Western blot was used to detect the activation of the extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERK) signaling pathway. Results: Pal-pHK-pKV and pHK-pKV with 20 µM blocked the interaction between VDAC1 and HKII, and detached HKII from mitochondria, which depolarized the mitochondrial membrane potential, induced mitochondria dysfunction, and decreased ATP production. The decreased ATP subsequently inhibited the activation of the ERK/BCL-2 pathway and increased the BAX/BCL-2 ratio. Cytochrome c was then released from the mitochondria and induced capase-3 activation and subsequently apoptosis. Additionally, decreased ATP induced the expression of FAS and then apoptosis. Conclusions: Mitochondria specific peptide amphiphiles induce mitochondrial dysfunction and provide a new approach for the treatment of PTCL.

Over the past decade, biochar-supported nZVI composites (nZVI/biochar) have been developed and applied to treat various pollutants due to their excellent physical and chemical properties, especially in the field of chromium (VI) removal. This paper reviewed the factors influencing the preparation and experiments of nZVI/biochar composites, optimization methods, column experimental studies and the mechanism of Cr(VI) removal. The results showed that the difference in raw materials and preparation temperature led to the difference in functional groups and electron transfer capabilities of nZVI/biochar materials. In the experimental process, pH and test temperature can affect the surface chemical properties of materials and involve the electron transfer efficiency. Elemental doping and microbial coupling can effectively improve the performance of nZVI/biochar composites. In conclusion, biochar can stabilize nZVI and enhance electron transfer in nZVI/biochar materials, enabling the composite materials to remove Cr(VI) efficiently. The study of column experiments provides a theoretical basis for applying nZVI/biochar composites in engineering. Finally, the future work prospects of nZVI/biochar composites for heavy metal removal are introduced, and the main challenges and further research directions are proposed.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, with the combination of rituximab and chemotherapy being the standard treatment for it. Although rituximab monotherapy has a remarkable response rate, drug resistance with unclear mechanisms and lack of effective second-line therapy limit the survival benefits of patients with lymphoma. Here, we report that MORTALIN is highly expressed and correlates with resistance to rituximab-based therapy and poor survival in patients with DLBCL. Mechanistically, gain- and loss-of-function experiments revealed that the voltage-dependent anion channel 1-binding protein, MORTALIN, regulated Ca2+ release from the endoplasmic reticulum through mitochondria-associated membrane, facilitating AP1-mediated cell proliferation and YY-1-mediated downregulation of FAS in DLBCL cells. These dual mechanisms contribute to rituximab resistance. In mouse models, genetic depletion of MORTALIN markedly increased the antitumor activity of rituximab. We shed mechanistic light on MORTALIN-Ca2+-CaMKII-AP1-mediated proliferation and MORTALIN-Ca2+-CaMKII-inhibited death receptor in DLBCL, leading to rituximab resistance, and propose MORTALIN as a novel target for the treatment of DLBCL.

Background: Although various surgical techniques have been reported for aortic arch reconstruction for proximal and distal transverse arch (PDTA) hypoplasia, no consensus has been reached on a surgical option for initial arch reconstruction. This study was undertaken to review various arch reconstruction options for PDTA hypoplasia in Chinese infants. Methods: A retrospective review of 121 infants who underwent initial arch reconstruction of the proximal and distal aortic arches between 2010 and 2020 was performed. Freedom from recoarctation was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier analysis. Univariate and multivariable Cox regression analyses were performed to determine perioperative data associated with an increased risk of recoarctation after surgery. Results: Aortic arch reconstruction was performed by end-to-side anastomosis (ESA) (n=37) or patch repair [autologous pericardial patch (APP), n=53; bovine pericardial patch (BPP), n=20; autologous pulmonary artery patch (APAP), n=11]. The relative diameter of the proximal arch was 0.51±0.07, and the relative diameter of the distal arch was 0.43±0.07. The median follow-up time was 679 (range, 388-1,362) days. Recoarctation was observed in 44 (36.4%) patients. ESA was an independent risk factor for further development of recoarctation after the initial aortic arch reconstruction [hazard ratio (HR) =2.13; P=0.020]. Conclusions: Aortic arch reconstruction via ESA was an independent risk factor for late recoarctation of the proximal and distal aortic arches in patients who underwent the initial surgery in infancy. Increasing land utilization, population aggregation and strong land-sea interaction make coastal areas an ecologically fragile environment. The construction of an ecological security pattern is important for maintaining the function of the coastal ecosystem. This paper takes Jiaodong Peninsula in China, a hilly coastal area, as an example for evaluating landscape ecological risk within a comprehensive framework of "nature-neighborhood-landscape", based on spatial principal component analysis, and it constructs the ecological security pattern based on the minimum cumulative resistance model (MCR). The results showed that the overall level of ecological risk in the study area was medium. The connectivity between the areas of low landscape ecological risk was relatively low, and the high risk areas were concentrated in the north of the Peninsula. A total of 11 key ecological corridors of three types (water, green space and road corridors) and 105 potential corridors were constructed. According to the ecological network pattern, landscape ecological optimization suggestions were proposed: key corridors in the north and south of Jiaodong Peninsula should be connected; urban development should consider current ecological sources and corridors to prevent landscape fragmentation; and the ecological roles of potential corridors should be strengthened. This paper can provide a theoretical and practical basis for ecological planning and urban master planning in coastal areas in the future.

PURPOSE: Long-leg-radiography (LLR) is commonly used for the measurement of lower limb alignment. However, limb rotations during radiography may interfere with the alignment measurement. This study examines the effect of limb rotation on the accuracy of measurements based on the mechanical and anatomical axes of the femur and tibia, with variations in knee flexion and coronal deformity. METHODS: Forty-five lower limbs of 30 patients were scanned with CT. Virtual LLRs simulating five rotational positions (neutral, ± 10[Formula: see text], and ± 20[Formula: see text] internal rotation) were generated from the CT images. Changes in the hip-knee-ankle angle (HKA) and the femorotibial angle (FTA) were measured on each image with respect to neutral values. These changes were related to knee flexion and coronal deformity under both weight- and non-weight-bearing conditions. RESULTS: The measurement errors of the HKA and FTA derived from limb rotation were up to 4.84 ± 0.66[Formula: see text] and 7.35 ± 0.88[Formula: see text], respectively, and were correlated with knee flexion (p < 0.001) and severe coronal deformity (p < 0.001). Compared with the non-weight-bearing position, the coronal deformity measured in the weight-bearing condition was 2.62[Formula: see text] greater, the correlation coefficients between the coronal deformity and the deviation ranges of HKA and FTA were also greater. CONCLUSIONS: Flexion and severe coronal deformity have a significant influence on the measurement error of lower limb alignment. Errors can be amplified in the weight-bearing condition compared with the non-weight-bearing condition. When using HKA and FTA to represent the mechanical axis and the anatomical axis on LLR, limb rotation impacts the anatomic axis more than the mechanical axis in patients with severe deformities. Considering LLR as the gold standard image modality, attention should be paid to the measurement of knee alignment. Especially for the possible errors derived from weight-bearing long-leg radiographs of patients with severe knee deformities.

Hydrogels have gained tremendous attention due to their versatility in soft electronics, actuators, biomedical sensors, etc. Due to the high water content, hydrogels are usually soft, weak, and freeze below 0°C, which brings severe limitations to applications such as soft robotics and flexible electronics in harsh environments. Most existing anti-freezing gels suffer from poor mechanical properties and urgently need further improvements. Here, we took inspirations from tendon and coniferous trees and provided an effective method to strengthen polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel while making it freeze resistant. The salting-out effect was utilized to create a hierarchically structured polymer network, which induced superior mechanical properties (Young's modulus: 10.1 MPa, tensile strength: 13.5 MPa, and toughness: 127.9 MJ/m3). Meanwhile, the cononsolvency effect was employed to preserve the structure and suppress the freezing point to -60°C. Moreover, we have demonstrated the broad applicability of our material by fabricating PVA hydrogel-based hydraulic actuators and ionic conductors.

Crosslinked polymers and gels are important in soft robotics, solar vapor generation, energy storage, drug delivery, catalysis, and biosensing. However, their attractive mass transport and volume-changing abilities are diffusion-limited, requiring miniaturization to avoid slow response. Typical approaches to improving diffusion in hydrogels sacrifice mechanical properties by increasing porosity or limit the total volumetric flux by directionally confining the pores. Despite tremendous efforts, simultaneous enhancement of diffusion and mechanical properties remains a long-standing challenge hindering broader practical applications of hydrogels. In this work, cononsolvency photopolymerization is developed as a universal approach to overcome this swelling-mechanical property trade-off. The as-synthesized poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel, as an exemplary system, presents a unique open porous network with continuous microchannels, leading to record-high volumetric (de)swelling speeds, almost an order of magnitude higher than reported previously. This swelling enhancement comes with a simultaneous improvement in Young's modulus and toughness over conventional hydrogels fabricated in pure solvents. The resulting fast mass transport enables in-air operation of the hydrogel via rapid water replenishment and ultrafast actuation. The method is compatible with 3D printing. The generalizability is demonstrated by extending the technique to poly(N-tertbutylacrylamide-co-polyacrylamide) and polyacrylamide hydrogels, non-temperature-responsive polymer systems, validating the present hypothesis that cononsolvency is a generic phenomenon driven by competitive adsorption.

The characterization of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) by liquid biopsy has a great potential for precision medicine in oncology. Here, a universal and tandem logic-based strategy is developed by combining multiple nanomaterials and nanopore sensing for the determination of mucin 1 protein (MUC1) and breast cancer CTCs in real samples. The strategy consists of analyte-triggered signal conversion, cascaded amplification via nanomaterials including copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs), silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), and biomaterials including DNA hydrogel and DNAzyme, and single-molecule-level detection by nanopore sensing. The amplification of the non-DNA nanomaterial gives this method considerable stability, significantly lowers the limit of detection (LOD), and enhances the anti-interference performance for complicated samples. As a result, the ultrasensitive detection of MUC1 could be achieved in the range of 0.0005-0.5 pg/mL, with an LOD of 0.1 fg/mL. Moreover, we further tested MUC1 as a biomarker for the clinical diagnosis of breast cancer CTCs under double-blind conditions on the basis of this strategy, and MCF-7 cells could be accurately detected in the range from 5 to 2000 cells/mL, with an LOD of 2 cells/mL within 6 h. The detection results of the 19 clinical samples were highly consistent with those of the clinical pathological sections, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, and color ultrasound. These results demonstrate the validity and reliability of our method and further proved the feasibility of MUC1 as a clinical diagnostic biomarker for CTCs.

PURPOSE: Bony resection is the primary step during total knee arthroplasty. The accuracy of bony resection was highly addressed because it was deemed to have a good relationship with mechanical line. Patient-specific instruments (PSI) were invented to copy the bony resection references from the preoperative surgical plan during a total knee arthroplasty (TKA); however, the accuracy still remains controversial. This study was aimed at finding out the accuracy of the bony resection during PSI-assisted TKA. METHODS: Forty-two PSI-assisted TKAs (based on full-length leg CT images) were analyzed retrospectively. Resected bones of every patient were given a CT scan, and three-dimensional radiographs were reconstructed. The thickness of each bony resection was measured with the three-dimensional radiographs and recorded. The saw blade thickness (1.27 mm) was added to the measurements, and the results represented intraoperative bone resection thickness. A comparison between intraoperative bone resection thickness and preoperatively planned thickness was conducted. The differences were calculated, and the outliers were defined as >3 mm. RESULTS: The distal femoral condyle had the most accurate bone cuts with the smallest difference (median, 1.0 mm at the distal medial femoral condyle and 0.8 mm at the distal lateral femoral condyle) and the least outliers (none at the distal medial femoral condyle and 1 (2.4%) at the distal lateral femoral condyle). The tibial plateau came in second (median difference, 0.8 mm at the medial tibial plateau and 1.4 mm at the lateral tibial plateau; outliers, none at the medial tibial plateau and 1 (2.6%) at the lateral tibial plateau). Regardless of whether the threshold was set to >2 mm (14 (17.9%) at the tibial plateau vs. 12 (14.6%) at the distal femoral condyle, p > 0.05) or >3 mm (1 (1.3%) at the tibial plateau vs. 1 (1.2%) at the distal femoral condyle, p > 0.05), the accuracy of tibial plateau osteotomy was similar to that of the distal femoral condyle. Osteotomy accuracy at the posterior femoral condyle and the anterior femoral condyle were the worst. Outliers were up to 6 (15.0%) at the posterior medial femoral condyle, 5 (12.2%) at the posterior lateral femoral condyle, and 6 (15.8%) at the anterior femoral condyle. The percentages of overcut and undercut tended to 50% in most parts except the lateral tibial plateau. At the lateral tibial plateau, the undercut percentage was twice that of the overcut. CONCLUSION: The tibial plateau and the distal femoral condyle share a similar accuracy of osteotomy with PSI. PSI have a generally good accuracy during the femur and tibia bone resection in TKA. PSI could be a kind of user-friendly tool which can simplify TKA with good accuracy. Level of Evidence. This is a Level IV case series with no comparison group.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the protective effects of progesterone on white matter injury and brain immaturity in neonatal rats with chronic hypoxia. METHODS: Three-day old Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: (1) control (n = 48), rats were exposed to normoxia (fraction of inspired oxygen: 21% ± 0%); (2) chronic hypoxia (n = 48), rats were exposed to hypoxia (fraction of inspired oxygen: 10.5% ± 1.0%); and (3) progesterone (n = 48), rats were exposed to hypoxia and administrated with progesterone (8 mg/kg/d). Hematoxylin-eosin staining, immunohistochemistry, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and Western blot analyses were compared on postnatal day 14 in different groups. Motor skill and coordination abilities of rats were assessed via rotation experiments. RESULTS: Increased brain weights (P < .05), narrowed ventricular sizes (P < .01), and rotarod experiment scores (P < .01) were better in the progesterone group than in the chronic hypoxia group. The number of mature oligodendrocytes and myelin basic protein expression increased in the progesterone group compared with the chronic hypoxia group (P < .01). The polarization of M1 microglia cells in the corpus callosum of chronic hypoxia-induced hypomyelination rats was significantly increased, whereas there were fewer M2 microglia cells. Conversely, progesterone therapy had an opposite effect and caused an increase in M2 microglia polarization versus a reduction in M1 microglia cells. CONCLUSIONS: Progesterone could prevent white matter injury and improve brain maturation in a neonatal hypoxic rat model; this may be associated with inducing a switch from M1 to M2 in microglia.
