RESUMO

Bacterially infected wounds are a serious threat to patients' lives and health, and multifunctional dressings with antimicrobial properties and healing promotion are urgently needed. Thus, we used the cationic and anionic properties of chitosan (CS)-nerol (N) derivative (CSN) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) to prepare asymmetric layer-by-layer self-assembled (LBL) composite films (CSN-CMC LBL films) with antibacterial and healing properties using a spin-coating method. SEM images showed that the CSN-CMC LBL films had completely different degrees of roughness at the bottom (hydrophilic layer) and at the top (hydrophobic layer), with the roughness at the top increasing as the number of layers increased. The CSN and CMC were used to prepare asymmetric LBL films via the electrostatic attraction of -COO- and NH3+. In addition, adhesion and water contact angle tests showed that the CSN-CMC LBL films had enhanced tissue adhesion and good hydrophobicity. These materials had excellent antimicrobial activity and good biocompatibility. Importantly, the animal infection model results showed that CSN-CMC-8 LBL films effectively eliminated the infection in vivo, inhibited inflammation, promoted vascular regeneration, accelerated the epithelialization process, and achieved high quality healing. Overall, the CSN-CMC LBL films in this study showed considerable potential for application in infected wound healing.

Early neurological deterioration is a common complication of acute ischemic stroke (AIS), which aggravates symptoms, worsens the condition, and counteracts the benefits of clinical treatment. The aim of this paper was to analyze the correlation between lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), and the occurrence of early neurological deterioration (END) in patients with AIS and to explore the clinical prediction of END by the combination of the 2 assays for the clinical prediction of END. A total of 500 AIS patients admitted to our hospital from October 2022 to October 2023 were included as study subjects, and the clinical data of all AIS patients were collected and organized to detect the levels of Lp-PLA2 and MMP-9. Categorized into END and non-END groups according to whether END occurred within 7 days of the onset of AIS, and comparing the clinical baseline data and laboratory index levels of the 2 groups. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the independent predictors of END, and the predictive effects of Lp-PLA2 and MMP-9 levels on END were assessed by subject work characteristics (ROC) curves. END occurred in 111 (22.2%) of 500 AIS patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that diabetes (OR 2.717, 95% CI:1.53-4.81, P < .001), baseline NIHSS score (OR 1.65, 95% CI:1.41-1.94, P < .001), Lp-PLA2 (OR 1.07, 95% CI:1.05-1.09, P < .001) and MMP-9 (OR 1.12, 95% CI:1.09-1.16, P < .001) levels were independent influences on the occurrence of END in patients with AIS after correcting for confounders. ROC curve analysis showed that Lp-PLA2, MMP-9, and a combination of both predicted END with an area under the curve was 0.730, 0.763, and 0.831, respectively, and the area under the curve for the combination of both predicting END was significantly higher than that for any of the inflammatory markers alone (P < .05). Both inflammatory markers, Lp-PLA2 and MMP-9, were independent predictors of the development of END in patients with AIS, and the combination of the two had a higher predictive value.

To study the protective mechanism of acupuncture at "Jiangya Recipe" on chronic ischemic white matter injury in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and the regulation of Jun N-terminal kinase-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (JNK-NMDAR) loop. A hypertensive white matter injury model was established in 46 male SHR rats aged 11 weeks by bilateral common carotid artery tapering (SHR-2VGO). In the SHR sham operation group, only bilateral common carotid arteries were isolated and in the SHR-2VGO modeling group, 36 rats were used for microcoil spring clip implantation to narrow the common carotid arteries and then, after 2 weeks of modeling, rats with impaired motor function were removed, and SHR-2VGO rats with successful final models were randomly divided into the model group, JNK blocking group, and acupuncture group. The sham operation group, model group, and JNK blocking group underwent the same grasping fixation, and the acupuncture group received acupuncture at acupoints "Jiangya Fang" once daily. In the JNK blocker group, an injection cannula was implanted into the lateral ventricle and sp600125 was injected into the lateral ventricle at 4.5 ul/day for 4 weeks. One week after the end of the intervention, white matter lesions were detected by MRI DWI and T2 imaging, and the learning and memory ability of rats was tested by Y-Maze and Passive Avoidance. Myelin density was detected by luxol fast blue (LFB) staining, also axon arrangement, myelin integrity, and thickness of neurons were detected by electron microscopy; neuronal morphology and the number of Nissl bodies in the hippocampus were detected by Nissl staining, dendritic spine density changes were detected by Golgi staining, and JNK, NMDAR1, and N-methyl-D-receptor 2B (NMDAR2B) in DG, CA3 region of hippocampus were detected by immunohistochemistry, protein expression of p-JNK/JNK, p-NMDAR1/NMDAR1, NMDAR2B, GSK3ß protein expression in the fimbria of hippocampus was detected by Western blot. The Y maze test of SHR-2VGO+Acu and SHR-2VGO+ sp600125 group showed that the spontaneous alternating reaction rate increased significantly. At the same time, the incubation period increased significantly and the number of errors decreased significantly in Passive Avoidance. MRI T2WI showed that the white matter high signal of the corpus callosum, internal capsule and hippocampal fimbria in the SHR-2VGO+ sp600125 and SHR-2VGO+Acu groups was significantly lower than that in the SHR-2VGO model group, and the striatum and anterior commissure were not obvious. DWI showed that the SHR-2VGO model group had scattered high signal and limited diffusion movement in both the internal capsule and striatum, but the difference between groups was not obvious. Compared with SHR-2VGO rats, LFB staining of SHR-2VGO + sp600125 and SHR-2VGO +Acu groups showed significant relaxation of myelin porosity in corpus callosum, striatum, inner capsule, anterior commissure and hippocampal fimbria, and electron microscopy showed improved axonal myelin integrity and thickness in corpus callosum region. Also, the number of blue patchy Nissl bodies increased, and the number and complexity of dendritic spines increased significantly in Golgi staining. Immunohistochemical detection showed that JNK levels in DG and CA3 region were increased and NMDAR1 and NMDAR2B levels were decreased in SHR-2VGO+Acu and SHR-2VGO+ sp600125 groups. Meanwhile, protein expressions of GSK3ß, NMDAR1/p-NMDAR1 and NMDAR2B in fimbria of hippocampus were increased, and JNK/P-JNK protein expression decreased. Acupuncture can increase the density and thickness of myelin sheath in white matter areas of corpus callosum, anterior commissure and hippocampal fimbria, increase the number and length of hippocampal neuronal dendrites, and improve hypertensive white matter injury and cognitive decline through JNK-NMDAR pathway.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) can cause gastritis, peptic ulcers, gastric cancer, and many other gastrointestinal diseases. The 14-day neo-dual therapy for H pylori is considered by most countries to have good eradication rates, while the 7- and 10-day studies have been more widely explored, however, we find that their results are different. The applicability of the shorter and less expensive 10-day neo-dual therapy to our country has not yet been confirmed. METHODS: The patients were divided into 3 groups of 200 each by randomization method. Group A: patients received vonoprazan 20 mg, bid + amoxicillin(1 g), tid, for 14 days. Group B: vonoprazan (20 mg) bid + amoxicillin (1 g) tid, duration of treatment is 10 days, group C: rabeprazole (20 mg) bid + bismuth potassium citrate tablets/tinidazole tablets/clarithromycin tablets, combined package (4.2 g), bid, duration of treatment 14 days. The main comparisons were H pylori eradication rate, adverse drug reaction profile and cost-effect ratio in each group. RESULTS: The eradication rates of groups A, B, and C were 92.5%, 91.6%, and 80.1%, respectively. There was no significant difference in the eradication rates of groups A and B (P > .05), groups A and B had statistically significantly better eradication rates than group C (P < .05). The incidence of adverse reactions in groups A, B, and C was 9.5%, 8.5%, and 17.0%, respectively. There was no difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between A and B: (P > .05), The incidence of adverse reactions was statistically significantly lower in groups A and B than in group C (P < .05). Logistic regression analysis showed nonsmokers had a higher eradication rate (OR 2.587, 95% CI: 1.377-4.859, P = .003), and taller patients were more likely to have successful eradication (OR 1.052, 95% CI: 1.008-1.097, P = .020). Group B had the lowest cost-benefit analysis results. CONCLUSION: Group B had an acceptable eradication rate, the lowest incidence of adverse effects, and the lowest cost analysis. Eradication is more likely to be successful in patients who do not smoke and in those who are taller.

Developing convenient, efficient, and natural wound dressings remain the foremost strategy for treating skin wounds. Thus, we innovatively combined the semi-dissolved acidified sol-gel conversion method with the internal gelation method to fabricate SA (sodium alginate)/CS (chitosan)/Zn2+ physically cross-linked double network hydrogel and named it SA/CS/Zn2+ PDH. The characterization results demonstrated that increased Zn2+ content led to hydrogels with improved physical and chemical properties, such as rheology, water retention, and swelling capacity. Moreover, the hydrogels exhibited favorable antibacterial properties and biocompatibility. Notably, the establishment of an in vitro pro-healing wound model further confirmed that the hydrogel had a superior ability to repair wounds and promote skin regeneration. In future, as a natural biomaterial with antimicrobial properties, it has the potential to promote wound healing.

In this study, we explored the prognostic risk factors of elderly patients (≥65 years old) with lymph node-negative esophageal cancer (EC) and established a nomogram to evaluate the cancer-specific survival of patients. The surveillance, epidemiology, and end results database was used to collect data on patients diagnosed with EC. Univariate and multivariate Cox analyses were used to determine independent prognostic factors, and the nomogram for predicting cancer-specific survival of EC patients was constructed based on the independent prognostic factors obtained from the multivariate Cox analysis. To evaluate the predictive ability of the nomogram, calibration curves, concordance index (C-index), receiver operating characteristic curves, and decision curve analysis were conducted. Kaplan-Meier method was used to analyze the long-term outcomes of EC patients with different risk stratifications. A total of 3050 cases with lymph node-negative EC were randomized into the training cohort (1525) and the validation cohort (1525). Cancer-specific mortality at 1, 3, and 5 years in the entire cohort was 30.7%, 41.8%, and 59.2%, respectively. In multivariate Cox analysis, age (P < .001), marital status (P < .001), tumor size (P < .001), Tumor-node-metastasis stage (P < .001), chemotherapy (P = .011), radiotherapy (P < .001), and surgery (P < .001) were independent prognostic factors. The C-index for the training cohort was 0.740 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.722-0.758), and the C-index for the validation cohort was 0.738 (95% CI: 0.722-0.754). The calibration curve demonstrated the great calibration ability of the nomogram. Based on the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, the nomogram demonstrated a higher sensitivity than the tumor-node-metastasis stage. Decision curve analysis showed the good clinical utility of the nomogram. The risk stratification system was established using the Kaplan-Meier curve and verified by the log-rank test (P < .001). The nomogram and risk stratification system can improve the accuracy of prediction to help clinicians identify high-risk patients and make treatment decisions.

Peptide self-assembling materials have received significant attention from researchers in recent years, emerging as a popular field in biological, environmental, medical, and other new materials studies. In this study, we utilized controllable enzymatic hydrolysis technology (animal proteases) to obtain supramolecular peptide self-assembling materials (CAPs) from the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas). We conducted physicochemical analyses to explore the pro-healing mechanisms of CAPs on skin wounds in both in vitro and in vivo experiments through a topical application. The results demonstrated that CAPs exhibit a pH-responsive behavior for self-assembly and consist of peptides ranging from 550 to 2300 Da in molecular weight, with peptide chain lengths of mainly 11-16 amino acids. In vitro experiments indicated that CAPs display a procoagulant effect, free radical scavenging activity, and promote the proliferation of HaCaTs (112.74% and 127.61%). Moreover, our in vivo experiments demonstrated that CAPs possess the ability to mitigate inflammation, boost fibroblast proliferation, and promote revascularization, which accelerates the epithelialization process. Consequently, a balanced collagen I/III ratio in the repaired tissue and the promotion of hair follicle regeneration were observed. With these remarkable findings, CAPs can be regarded as a natural and secure treatment option with high efficacy for skin wound healing. The potential of CAPs to be further developed for traceless skin wound healing is an exciting area for future research and development.

The present study explored whether acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), a cognitive behavioral therapy approach, could improve the symptoms of schizophrenia spectrum disorders among patients with schizophrenia in remission. A pre- and post-treatment design with two evaluation time points was employed. Sixty outpatients with schizophrenia in remission were randomly divided into two groups: the ACT plus treatment as usual (ACT+TAU) and treatment as usual (TAU) groups. The ACT+TAU group participated in 10 group-based ACT interventions and TAU in the hospital, and the TAU group only received TAU interventions. General psycho-pathological symptoms, self-esteem, and psychological flexibility were assessed before intervention (baseline; pre-test) and after intervention (five weeks; post-test). Results indicated that, compared to the TAU group, the ACT+TAU group exhibited a more significant improvement in general psychopathological symptoms, self-esteem, cognitive fusion, and acceptance and action at post-test. ACT intervention could effectively decrease the general psycho-pathological symptoms and increase self-esteem level and psychological flexibility in people with schizophrenia in remission.

In order to improve the antibacterial activity of chitosan and change its solubility, a novel water-soluble chitosan (CS)-nerol (N) derivative (CS-N) was prepared via Schiff base reaction and grafting reaction. FT-IR, NMR, XRD, TGA and SEM were used to characterize the structure and physicochemical properties, and in vitro antibacterial, antioxidant, and cellular assays were used to test for bioactivity and safety. The results revealed that the C6 hydroxyl group of CS was substituted with N, with a degree of substitution of 38 % for CS-N. Furthermore, compared to CS, CS-N demonstrated superior antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, as well as significant DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging activity. Most importantly, CS-N did not harm HaCaT cells. In conclusion, this study provides a promising strategy for the design of chitosan derivatives with significant potential for application in pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic applications.

The abnormal gait of stroke patients not only severely limits the recovery of their walking ability, but also seriously affects their quality of daily life. Previous observational studies have focused too much on the observation of single degree of freedom and axial knee motion angles in stroke patients. Changes in the multi-degree of freedom and multi-axial joint angles of the knee have been less frequently observed, leading to somewhat limited conclusions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to use the Opti-knee motion test to analyze in real time the motion of the knee in all directions on the healthy side of stroke patients and to compare it with normal gait to provide a clinical basis for subsequent rehabilitation. In a cross-sectional study, 120 subjects (60 stroke patients were as the observation group and 60 healthy subjects as the control group) were studied. Both groups of subjects were tested for Opti-Knee tri-axial angles of motion of the healthy side of the knee, including flexion and extension, internal and external rotation, internal and external turning, anterior and posterior displacement, superior and inferior displacement, left and right displacement, maximum extension angle and maximum flexion angle. Compared with the control group, there were significant changes in the joint angles of flexion and extension, internal and external rotation, internal and external turning, maximum extension and maximum flexion of the knee on the healthy side in the observation group, and the differences were statistically significant [95%(37.22, 45.13), P = .01], [95%(9.51,13.67), P = .018], [95%(4.82,7.57), P = .049], [95%(4.12, 8.63), P = .019], [95%(51.68, 57.28), P = .0001]. However, there was no significant change in the angle of motion of the healthy side of the knee for anterior-posterior displacement, superior-inferior displacement and internal-external displacement in either group and the differences were not statistically significant [95%(1.16, 1.78), P = .72], [95%(0.85,1.32), P = .32], [95%(0.57, 0.88), P = .36]. This study confirms the importance of changes in the angle of motion of the knee on the side of the stroke patient in maintaining the stability of the knee joint. Therefore, their bilateral lower limb symmetry training should be paid attention to in the subsequent rehabilitation treatment.

Previous studies found that both oral and topical administration of enzymatic digestion products < 3 K Da ultrafiltration fractions of Pinctada martensii mantle (PMPs) had pro-healing effects. Thus, we further purified them by Sephadex-G25 and screened them by cellular assays to obtain Pinctada martensii purified peptides (PMPPs). In this study, we explored the mechanism of PMPPs on wound healing by in vivo, in vitro, and in silico experiments. LC-MS/MS results showed that PMPPs consisted of 33 peptides with molecular weights ranging from 758.43 to 2014.04 Da, and the characteristic peptide was Leu-Asp. The results of cellular assays showed that PMPPs promoted the proliferation of human skin fibroblasts (HSF) (135%) and human immortalized keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells (125%) very significantly at 12.5 µg/mL. The in vivo results showed that PMPPs could achieve scarless healing by inhibiting the inflammatory response, accelerating the epithelialization process, and regulating collagen I/III ratio. The optimal peptide sequence FAFQAEIAQLMS of PMPPs was screened for key protein receptors in wound healing (EGFR1, FGFR1, and MMP-1) with the help of molecular docking technique, which also showed to be the key pro-healing active peptide sequence. Therefore, it may provide a therapeutic strategy with great potential for wound healing.

The development of an efficient and convenient material to improve skin tissue regeneration is a major challenge in healthcare. Inspired by the theory of moist wound healing, portable chitooligosaccharide (COS)/sodium alginate (SA) dual-net gel films containing multiple metal ions were prepared by a casting and in-situ spray method, which can be used to significantly promote wound healing without the use of therapeutic drugs. A variety of divalent cations was introduced in this experiment to improve the advantages of each metal ion by forming metal ion chelates with COS. Moreover, the physicochemical properties and antioxidant properties of nIon2+-COS/SA gel films were systematically characterized and evaluated by in vitro experiments. The gel films showed good antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. In addition, the gel films showed good cytocompatibility in cellular experiments, and the gel films with Zn2+ and Sr2+ addition significantly accelerated wound healing in whole skin defect model experiments. Therefore, this nIon2+-COS/SA gel film is an ideal candidate material for wound dressing.

The rapid preparation of safe and efficient wound dressings that meet the needs of the entire repair process remains a major challenge for effective therapeutic wound healing. Natural, sprayable Ion2+-COS/SA multifunctional dual-network gel films created by the in situ coordination of chitooligosaccharide (COS), metal ions and sodium alginate (SA) using casting and an in-situ spray method were synthesized. The gel films exhibited excellent physicochemical properties such as swelling, porosity and plasticity at a COS mass fraction of 3%. Furthermore, at this mass fraction, the addition of bimetallic ions led to the display of multifunctional properties, including significant antioxidant, antibacterial and cytocompatibility properties. In addition, experiments in a total skin defect model showed that this multifunctional gel film accelerates wound healing and promotes skin regeneration. These results suggest that the sprayable Ion2+-COS/SA multifunctional pro-healing gel film may be a promising candidate for the clinical treatment of allodermic wounds.

Oral administration of peptides/proteins with superior efficacy and fewer side effects is the most advantageous route of administration. In this study, we utilized controllable enzymatic (animal protease) hydrolysis technology to prepare active polypeptide self-assembling supramolecular (APs) from marine shellfish meat to explore the functional mechanism of APs in in vitro and in vivo (oral administration) experiments . In vitro experiments revealed that APs with self-assembly tendency had multifunctional activities. In vivo experiments indicated that oral administration of naturally safe APs could inhibited inflammation, promoted fibroblast proliferation and revascularization, and accelerated the epithelialization process, thus favoring a balanced repair tissue collagen I/III ratio and the promotion of hair follicle regeneration to achieve scarless healing, which was also relevant to "skin-gut" axis. These results showed that APs, as demonstrated in this study, promoted dermal wound healing in mice and may be developed and used to treat skin wounds.

ABSTRACT: Neurogenic cervical spondylosis is the most common type of cervical spondylosis, accounting for approximately 60% percent of the incidence of cervical spondylosis. Cervical spine Long manipulation and sling exercise training (SET) have obtained good therapeutic results in clinical rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Long manipulation combined with SET on neurogenic cervical spondylosis. In this assessor-blind, randomized controlled trial, 90 eligible patients will be randomized into a combination treatment group (Long manipulation combined with SET), a Long manipulation group and a conventional massage group. The visual analogue score, the Neck Disability Index score, and muscle fatigue in the bilateral upper oblique and Musculus sternocleidomastoideus, using mean power frequency and median frequency from the surface electromyography frequency domain index, will be assessed before and after the intervention at 0 and 4 weeks, respectively.Trial registration: Registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registration Center with the number ChiCTR2100054978. Registered December 30, 2021.

Reconstructing enamel-like hydroxyapatite structures on damaged teeth remains a great challenge in the materials science and dentistry due to its highly ordered hierarchical microstructure. Inspired by the mineralization of mollusk nacre in nature, abalone nacre water-soluble organic matrix (WSM) was isolated successfully though an ultrasonic-assisted water extraction (UWE) strategy with nondestructive activity and high-quality extraction for simulating the process of tooth hard tissue mineralization. Results showed that the UWE strategy significantly increased the protein yield from 7.60% to 9.60% and improved the polysaccharide yield from 2.59% to 3.34%, respectively, indicating its excellent extraction efficiency of WSM. Noteworthily, the smallest averaged particle size (~155 nm) of WSM were obtained at an ultrasound time of 6 h, whereas the highest absolute values (~ -32 mV) of zeta potential was produced. Moreover, it was proved that WSM could induce the growth of enamel-like hydroxyapatite crystals to further facilitate biomimetic remineralization of the demineralized enamel and restore its continuous and smooth surface structure in vitro. Besides, the hardness (4.37 ± 0.07 GPa) and modulus of elasticity (84.80 ± 1.49 GPa) of the WSM-repaired enamel was similar to that of native enamel, indicating superior mechanical properties after repair. Herein, it provides a promising green, efficient strategy for the remineralization of damaged enamel and high value utilization of waste abalone shells.

Skin wound healing, especially chronic wound healing, is a common challenging clinical problem. It is urgent to broaden the sources of bioactive substances that can safely and efficiently promote skin wound healing. This study aimed to observe the effects of active peptides (APs) of the mantle of Pinctada martensii on wound healing. After physicochemical analysis of amino acids and mass spectrometry of APs, the effect of APs on promoting healing was studied through a whole cortex wound model on the back of mice for 18 consecutive days. The results showed that APs consisted of polypeptides with molecular weights in the range 302.17-2936.43 Da. The content of polypeptides containing 2-15 amino acids accounted for 73.87%, and the hydrophobic amino acids accounted for 56.51%. Results of in vitro experimentation showed that mice in APs-L group which were fed a low dose of APs (0.5 g/kg bw) had a shortened epithelialization time due to a shortening inflammatory period (p < 0.05). Mechanistically, this relied on its specific ability to promote the proliferation of CD31, FGF and EGF which accelerated the percentage of wound closure. Moreover, the APs-L group mice had enhanced collagen synthesis and increased type III collagen content in their wounds through a TGF-ß/Smad signaling pathway (p > 0.05). Consequently, scar formation was inhibited and wound healing efficiency was significantly improved. These results show that the APs of Pinctada martensii promote dermal wound healing in mice and have tremendous potential for development and utilization in skin wound healing.

This study aimed to observe the effects of small molecular peptides (SMPs) of the mantle of Pinctada martensii on wound healing. After physicochemical analysis of amino acids and mass spectrometry of SMPs, the effect of SMPs on promoting healing was studied through a whole cortex wound model on the back of mice for 18 consecutive days. The results showed that SMPs consisted of polypeptides with a molecular weight of 302.17-2936.43 Da. The content of polypeptides containing 2-15 amino acids accounted for 73.87%, and the hydrophobic amino acids accounted for 56.51%. Results of in vitro experimentation showed that SMPs possess a procoagulant effect, but no antibacterial activity. Results of in vivo experiments indicated that SMPs inhibit inflammatory response by secretion of anti-inflammatory factor IL-10 during the inflammatory phase; during the proliferative phase, SMPs promote the proliferation of fibroblasts and keratinocytes. The secretion of transforming growth factor-ß1 and cyclin D1 accelerates the epithelialization and contraction of wounds. In the proliferative phase, SMPs effectively promote collagen deposition and partially inhibit superficial scar hyperplasia. These results show that SMPs promotes dermal wound healing in mice and have a tremendous potential for development and utilization in skin wound healing.

INTRODUCTION: This randomized, double-blind trial aimed to test effect of a Chinese herbal medicine, Qinggongshoutao (QGST) pill, on the cognition and progression of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). METHODS: Patients with aMCI were randomly assigned to receive QGST, Ginkgo biloba extract, or placebo for 52 weeks. The primary outcome measures were progression to possible or probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) and change in Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale scores; secondary outcome measures included assessments for cognition and function. RESULTS: Total 350 patients were enrolled, possible or probable AD developed in 10. There were significant differences in the probability of progression to AD in the QGST group (1.15%) compared with placebo group (10%). There was significant difference in Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale scores in favor of QGST over the placebo group. Secondary outcome measure (Mini-Mental State Examination) also showed benefit in QGST at end point. DISCUSSION: In patients with aMCI, QGST showed lower AD progression rate than placebo at 8.85%, and may have benefit on global cognition.
