Well-known complication associated with patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure include infection, acute cardiac tamponade, and local complications such as adjacent arterial or nerve damage, hemorrhage, and thrombophlebitis. Pelvic hematoma is rare and potentially fatal complication. This paper reports two cases of severe hemorrhagic shock within1 day after PFO closure. Both female patients presented to our department with history of headaches and were diagnosed with PFO. Both patients underwent percutaneous PFO closure from the right femoral vein. One day after the procedure, both patients experienced pelvic hematoma and were successfully rescued by compression hemostasis and uterine artery embolization. Both patients recovered well during follow-up. Life-threatening pelvic hematoma associated with PFO closure has a certain incidence and should be considered. Peripheral vascular complications after PFO closure can be safely treated but should not be ignored. We believe that the prevention of vascular mechanical damage during surgery is important. The possibility of spontaneous uterine artery rupture should be considered for unexplained pelvic hematoma. Although it is a rare complication, severe bleeding after PFO closure remains unpredictable. Timely and correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment are required. If the timing is delayed, there could be serious consequences.

Numerical methods are crucial to supporting the development of new technology in different industries, especially steelmaking, where many phenomena cannot be directly measured or observed under industrial conditions. As a result, further designing and optimizing steelmaking equipment and technology are not easy tasks. At the same time, numerical approaches enable modeling of various phenomena controlling material behavior and, thus, understanding the physics behind the processes occurring in different metallurgical devices. With this, it is possible to design and develop new technological solutions that improve the quality of steel products and minimize the negative impact on the environment. However, the usage of numerical approaches without proper validation can lead to misleading results and conclusions. Therefore, in this paper, the authors focus on the development of the CFD-based (computational fluid dynamics) approach to investigate the liquid steel flow inside one metallurgical device, namely a ladle furnace combined with an EMS (electromagnetic stirring) system. First, a numerical simulation of electromagnetic stirring in a scaled mercury model of a ladle furnace was carried out. The numerical results, such as stirring speed and turbulent kinetic energy, were compared with measurements in the mercury model. It was found that the results of the transient multiphase CFD model achieve good agreement with the measurements, but a free surface should be included in the CFD model to simulate the instability of the flow pattern in the mercury model. Based on the developed model, a full-scale industrial ladle furnace with electromagnetic stirring was also simulated and presented. This research confirms that such a coupled model can be used to design new types of EMS devices that improve molten steel flow in metallurgical equipment.

Objectives: To compare the diagnostic efficacy of PET-CT and bone marrow biopsy (BMB) in the detection of bone marrow involvement (BMI) in newly diagnosed patients with follicular lymphoma (FL), as well as their prognostic implications in such patients. Methods: Retrospective analysis was conducted on clinical data from 165 newly diagnosed FL patients. The benefits and drawbacks of PET-CT and BMB in assessing BMI in FL patients were compared and evaluated. Moreover, the prognostic outcomes and factors affecting the survival of FL patients were examined. Results: Among 165 patients, bone marrow involvement (BMI) was diagnosed by PET-CT (PET+) in 54 cases (32.7%), by bone marrow biopsy (BMB+) in 50 cases (30.3%), and by either PET+ or BMB+ in 80 cases (48.5%). PET-CT scans upgraded 32 patients (19.4%) to stage IV, including 1 stage I and 4 stage II cases. Four patients were elevated to stage IV by BMB, all of whom had a previous stage III diagnosis. No patients with previous stages I or II were elevated to stage IV by BMB. The median follow-up time was 6.6 years (range,0-11.0 years). The 5-year OS was 86.7%, and the 5-year PFS was 44.8%. Multivariate analysis revealed that BMI by PET-CT was the only independent predictor of PFS reduction. Regarding OS, grade 3a and BMI by PET-CT were independent predictors of decreased survival. Conclusion: PET-CT enables a thorough evaluation of bone marrow involvement in patients with FL, and BMI identified by PET-CT can have substantially implications for patient prognosis. PET-CT obtains vital data for the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of FL patients. By contrast, BMB seldom augments crucial data.

Intermetallic electrides have recently drawn considerable attention due to their unique electronic structure and high catalytic performance for the activation of inert chemical bonds under mild conditions. However, the relationship between electride (anionic) electron abundance and catalytic performance is undefined; the key deciding factor for the performance of intermetallic electride catalysts remains to be addressed. Here, the secret behind electride catalysts La-TM-Si (TM=Co, Fe and Mn) with the same crystal structure but different anionic electrons was studied. Unexpectedly, LaCoSi with the least anionic electrons showed the best catalytic activity. The experiments and first-principles calculations showed that the electride anions promote the N2 dissociation which alters the rate-determining step (RDS) for ammonia synthesis on the studied electrides. Different reaction mechanisms were found for La-TM-Si (TM=Fe, Co) and LaMnSi. A dual-site module was revealed for LaCoSi and LaFeSi, in which transition metals were available for the N2 dissociation and La accelerates the NHx formation, respectively, breaking the Sabatier scaling relation. For LaMnSi, which is the most efficient for the N2 activation, the activity for ammonia synthesis is limited and confined by the scaling relations. The findings provide new insight into the working mechanism of intermetallic electrides.

Bone marrow metastasis (BMM) refers to the metastasis of malignant tumours originating from nonhematopoietic tissues to the bone marrow. The nonhematopoietic malignant tumour cells metastasize to the bone marrow via heterogeneous dissemination or direct invasion to form metastases and the bone marrow is infiltrated by tumour cells, resulting in the destruction of its structure and the development of haematopoietic disorders. In the present study, the clinical characteristics, prognosis and treatment of BMMs were investigated. The main clinical manifestations were moderate anaemia and thrombocytopenia. Out of 52 cases, a total of 18 patients were not treated and the remaining patients underwent chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery or autologous stem cell transplantation in the Affiliated Tumour Hospital of Tianjin Medical University from September 2010 to October 2021. The primary tumours of bone marrow metastatic cancer were usually neuroblastoma and tumours originating from the breast and stomach. When bone metastases occur, patients are not necessarily accompanied by BMMs. In the present study, bone metastases occurred mainly in patients with breast and prostate cancers. The median overall survival of patients treated with antitumor therapy was significantly higher than that of untreated patients (11.5 vs. 3.3 months P<0.01). For patients with BMM, it is of great importance to actively evaluate the patient's condition and select the appropriate treatment plan for improving their prognosis.

Intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) is a novel tool for estimating cardiac anatomy during pulmonary vein isolation procedures, particularly the left atrium (LA) anatomy and pulmonary vein structures. ICE is widely used to establish a three-dimensional (3D) left atrial structural model during ablation procedures. However, it is unclear whether using ICE in a precise 3D modeling method can provide a more accurate left atrial 3D model and the transseptal approach. This study proposes a protocol to model the left atrium and pulmonary veins with ICE and fast anatomical mapping (FAM) catheter remodeling. It evaluates the accuracy of the models produced using the two methods through observer scoring. We included 50 patients who underwent ICE-based 3D remodeling and 45 who underwent FAM 3D remodeling based on pulmonary vein isolation procedures. The pulmonary vein antrum remodeling is estimated by comparing the antrum area acquired by remodeling and left atrial computed tomography angiography (CTA). The observer scores for the modeling in the ICE and FAM groups were 3.40 ± 0.81 and 3.02 ± 0.72 (P < 0.05), respectively. The pulmonary vein antrum area obtained using the ICE- and FAM-based methods showed a correlation with the area acquired by left atrium CT. However, the 95% confidence interval bias was narrower in ICE-acquired models than in FAM-acquired models (-238 cm2 to 323 cm2 Vs. -363 cm2 to 386 cm2, respectively) using Bland-Altman analysis. Therefore, precise ICE possesses high accuracy in estimating the left atrial structure, becoming a promising approach for future cardiac structure estimation.

In this study, a series of novel 3-(5-fluoropyridine-3-yl)-2-oxazolidinone derivatives were designed and synthesized based on compounds previously reported, and their antibacterial activity was investigated. Then their antibacterial activity was investigated for the first time. Preliminary screening results showed that all these compounds exhibited antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria, including 7 drug-sensitive strains and 4 drug-resistant strains, among which compound 7j exhibited an 8-fold stronger inhibitory effect than linezolid, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of 0.25 µg/mL. Further molecular docking studies predicted the possible binding mode between active compound 7j and the target. Interestingly, these compounds could not only hamper the formation of biofilms, but also have better safety, as confirmed by cytotoxicity experiments. All these results indicate that these 3-(5-fluoropyridine-3-yl)-2-oxazolidinone derivatives have the potential to be developed into novel candidates for the treatment of gram-positive bacterial infections.

A novel Torque teno neovison virus (TTVs) was identified in specimens collected from dead mink during an outbreak of the Aleutian mink disease virus. Eighteen complete genomic sequences were obtained, ranging from 2109 to 2158 nucleotides in length and consisting of an untranslated region and three open reading frames. The genomic organization of mink TTVs is similar to previously reported anelloviruses. However, the deduced amino acid sequence of its ORF1 protein shows genetic diversity compared to related anelloviruses, suggesting that it represents a putative new species within the Anelloviridae family. This study provides a detailed molecular characterization of the novel mink anelloviruses, including its codon usage pattern, origin, and evolution. Analysis of the viral genomic sequences reveals the existence of multiple genotypes of co-infection. Principal component analysis and phylogenetic trees confirm the coexistence of multiple genotypes. Furthermore, the codon usage analyses indicate that mink TTVs have a genotype-specific codon usage pattern and show a low codon usage bias. Host-specific adaptation analysis suggests that TTVs are less adapted to mink. The possible origin and evolutionary history of mink TTVs were elucidated. Mink TTVs was genetically closely related to giant panda anellovirus, representing a new species. The observed incongruence between the phylogenetic history of TTVs and that of their hosts suggests that the evolution of anellovirus is largely determined by cross-species transmission. The study provides insights into the co-infection and genetic evolution of anellovirus in China.

Xanthomonas fragariae (X. fragariae) is the causal agent of angular leaf spots (ALS) in strawberry plants. Recently, a study in China isolated X. fragariae strain YL19, which was observed to cause both typical ALS symptoms and dry cavity rot in strawberry crown tissue; this was the first X. fragariae strain to have both these effects in strawberry. In this study, from 2020 to 2022, we isolated 39 X. fragariae strains from diseased strawberries in different production areas in China. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and phylogenetic analysis showed that X. fragariae strain YLX21 was genetically different from YL19 and other strains. Tests indicated that YLX21 and YL19 had different pathogenicities toward strawberry leaves and stem crowns. YLX21 did not cause ALS symptoms, rarely caused dry cavity rot in strawberry crown after wound inoculation, and never caused dry cavity rot after spray inoculation, but it did cause severe ALS symptoms after spray inoculation. However, YL19 caused more severe symptoms in strawberry crowns under both conditions. Moreover, YL19 had a single polar flagellum, while YLX21 had no flagellum. Motility and chemotaxis assays showed that YLX21 had weaker motility than YL19, which may explain why YLX21 tended to multiply in situ within the strawberry leaf rather than migrate to other tissues, causing more severe ALS symptoms and mild crown rot symptoms. Taken together, the new strain YLX21 helped us reveal critical factors underlying the pathogenicity of X. fragariae and the mechanism by which dry cavity rot in strawberry crowns forms.

Xanthomonas fragariae usually causes angular leaf spot (ALS) of strawberry, a serious bacterial disease in many strawberry-producing regions worldwide. Recently, a new strain of X. fragariae (YL19) was isolated from strawberry in China and has been shown to cause dry cavity rot in strawberry crown. In this study, we constructed a green fluorescent protein (GFP)-labeled Xf YL19 (YL19-GFP) to visualize the infection process and pathogen colonization in strawberries. Foliar inoculation of YL19-GFP resulted in the pathogen migrating from the leaves to the crown, whereas dip inoculation of wounded crowns or roots resulted in the migration of bacteria from the crowns or roots to the leaves. These two invasion types both resulted in the systematic spread of YL19-GFP, but inoculation of a wounded crown was more harmful to the strawberry plant than foliar inoculation. Results increased our understanding of the systemic invasion of X. fragariae, and the resultant crown cavity caused by Xf YL19.

Elucidating the interactions between halide ions and bimetallic oxides can help understand their influences on the physicochemical properties of bimetallic oxides and ultimately lead to better performance, but this has not yet been explored. We report here the first study of the interaction of halide ions with two phase-pure bimetallic Ag-Cu oxides, Ag2Cu2O3 and Ag2Cu2O4, which have different chemical valences of Ag and Cu atoms. We found that halide ions have an aggressive etching effect on both bimetallic oxides, leading to a dramatic evolution of crystal structures and morphology. Halide ions act like "nano-carving knives", selectively etching out silver atoms to form silver halides and leaving a porous CuO skeleton. We revealed that Ag2Cu2O4 underwent a redox reaction with iodide ions (I-) to produce additional I3- in the solution, which was not observed in Ag2Cu2O3. Interestingly, according to the revealed interactions, both bimetallic oxides are confirmed as superior adsorbents to remove I- from wastewater in terms of a record-high uptake capacity, fast adsorption kinetics, and excellent selectivity for I-. Furthermore, such a halide etching can be turned into a powerful synthetic strategy. The out-etched silver halides were dissolved to give robust porous CuO nanostructures, which are proved to be excellent glucose-sensing electrodes with high sensitivity, excellent anti-interference, and stability, showing great application potential. This work contributes to improving the understanding of the mechanisms of halide ion-metal oxide interactions and ultimately to innovative applications.

Skin wounds caused by diabetes are a major medical problem. Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes hold promise to quicken wound healing due to their ability to transfer certain molecules to target cells, including mRNAs, microRNAs, lncRNAs, and proteins. Nonetheless, the specific mechanisms underlying this impact are not elucidated. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the effect of MSC-derived exosomes comprising long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) H19 on diabetic skin wound healing. Hair follicle mesenchymal stem cells (HF-MSCs) were effectively isolated and detected, and exosomes (Exo) were also isolated smoothly. Pretreatment with 30 mM glucose for 24 h (HG) could efficiently induce pyroptosis in HaCaT cells. Exosomal H19 enhanced HaCaT proliferation and migration and inhibited pyroptosis by reversing the stimulation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. Injection of exosomes overexpressing lncRNA H19 to diabetic skin wound promoted sustained skin wound healing, whereas sh-H19 exosomes did not have this effect. In conclusion, Exosomes overexpressing H19 promoted HaCaT proliferation, migration and suppressed pyroptosis both in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, HFMSC-derived exosomes that overexpress H19 may be included in strategies for healing diabetic skin wounds.

Nano selenium-enriched probiotics have been identified to improve immune responses, such as alleviating inflammation, antioxidant function, treatment of tumors, anticancer activity, and regulating intestinal flora. However, so far, there is little information on improving the immune effect of the vaccine. Here, we prepared nano selenium-enriched Levilactobacillus brevis 23017 (SeL) and heat-inactivated nano selenium-enriched L. brevis 23017 (HiSeL) and evaluated their immune enhancing functions on the alum-adjuvanted, inactivated Clostridium perfringens type A vaccine in mouse and rabbit models, respectively. We found that SeL enhanced immune responses of the vaccine by inducing a more rapid antibody production, eliciting higher immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody titers, improving secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) antibody level and cellular immune response, and regulating Th1/Th2 immune response, thus helping to induce better protective efficacy after challenge. Moreover, we confirmed that the immunoenhancement effects are related to regulating oxidative stress, cytokine secretion, and selenoprotein expression. Meanwhile, similar effects were observed in HiSeL. In addition, they show enhanced humoral immune response at 1/2 and 1/4 standard vaccine doses, which confirms their prominent immune enhancement effect. Finally, the effect of improving vaccine immune responses was further confirmed in rabbits, which shows that SeL stimulates the production of IgG antibodies, generates α toxin-neutralizing antibodies rapidly, and reduces the pathological damage to intestine tissue. Our study demonstrates that nano selenium-enriched probiotics improve the immune effect of the alum adjuvants vaccine and highlight its potential usage in remedying the disadvantages of alum adjuvants.

Macrophages, critical components of bone marrow microenvironment, are reported to be remodeled into leukemia-associated macrophages (LAMs) in leukemic microenvironment where they contribute to leukemia development, characterized as M2 macrophages with pro-tumor effects. However, how leukemic microenvironment transforms macrophages into LAMs remains unknown. Here, we analyzed the clinical relevance of LAMs and profiled their RNA-Seq from acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients with complete remission (CR) after induction treatment and refractory AML patients. Our results showed that the proportion and number of LAMs in refractory AML patients was higher than that in CR patients and LAM was a poor prognostic factor of AML patients. Furthermore, let-7b was a potentially aberrant gene in LAMs contributed to M2-subtype characteristics. Knockdown of let-7b in LAMs could inhibit the development of AML by repolarizing LAMs toward M1-subtype characteristics through the activation of Toll-like receptor and NF-κB pathway. Our study provides insight for future LAM-based immunotherapy strategies for AML.

Cancer of unknown primary site(CUPs) is a metastatic syndrome with an unidentifiable primary tumor, even after extensive workup to seek the primary site. CUPs accounts for about 3%-5% of the total number of all cancer diagnoses worldwide. The current precision medicine era has reclassified patients with CUPs into the favorable and unfavorable prognostic subset. In this study clinical characteristics and treatment of patients of CUPs were retropactively analysed. Thirty-two patients treated from July 2016 to October 2021 were included in the Affiliated Tumor Hospital of Tianjin Medical University(Tianjin, China).Common symptoms were anemia, fever, enlarged lymph nodes, abdominal pain, edema/multiple serous cavity effusion. Patients with good prognostic factors achieved good outcomes with treatment, conversely, patients with poor prognosis were generally treated empirically and had poorer outcomes. After anti-tumor treatment, the total effective rate was 41 percent(41% was the percentage of patients who achievedtumour respons). To the end of follow-up, after anti-tumor treatment, the median Overall Survival(OS) of patients was 5.4 months.

Although heart failure (HF) has become one of the most fatal diseases in the whole world, there are fewer drugs for its treatment. Therefore, we focused on the protective effect of Dl-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP) on myocardial injury and oxidative stress in heart failure mice and further investigated the relationship with the Nrf2/HO-1/Ca2+-SERCA2a axis. Methods. C57BL/6J mice were divided into the sham group (Sham), heart Failure model group (HF), HF + NBP group (HN), HN + Nrf2 inhibitor (HNM), HN + Calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) antagonist, KN93 (HNK). The HF mice model was prepared using abdominal aorta ligation. Mice's heart function was accessed by echocardiography. Hematoxylin-eosin staining and MASSON staining were used to identify myocardial injury; the cell apoptosis was determined by the TUNEL staining assay. The expression of oxidative stress-related proteins was detected by the ELISA assay. The reactive oxygen species and Nrf2 expression in heart tissue were observed with the immunofluorescence assay. SERCA2a, calmodulin, endoplasmic reticulum stress regulatory proteins, and Nrf2/HO-1 in mice' heart tissues were measured using Western blotting. Results. Moreover, NBP could significantly promote heart failure mice's heart function, relieve the injury and inhibit cell apoptosis. Meanwhile, it could reduce ERS injury of heart failure mice through increasing SERCA2a level and reducing Ca2+ influx. NBP was demonstrated to minimize CaMKII phosphorylation level and decrease cAMP-response element-binding protein phosphorylation level, suggesting NBP could also activate the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. Conclusions. We demonstrated that NPBs treatment promotes the cardiomyocyte's ERS and alleviates myocardial injury in heart failure mice, related to stimulating the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway, regulating Ca2+-SERCA2a, and reducing Ca2+ influx.

Aluminum dross (AD) is a waste product produced during aluminum processing and can be used to prepare mullite ceramic materials. However, the research on the preparation of mullite porous ceramics entirely from solid waste is still in the development stage. In this paper, porous mullite ceramics were successfully fabricated using a solid-phase sintering process with AD and different silicon sources (fly ash, silica dust, and gangue) as raw materials. The bulk density, apparent porosity, and compressive strength of the specimens were obtained, and the phase compositions and microstructures of the sintered specimens were measured using XRD and SEM, respectively. The average activation energy of the phase transition of fly ash, silica dust, and gangue as silicon sources were 984 kJ/mol, 1113 kJ/mol, and 741 kJ/mol, respectively. The microstructures of the mullite in the specimens were prisms, random aggregates, and needle-shaped, respectively. The formation of needle-shaped mullite combined with the substrate enhanced the mechanical strength of the porous mullite ceramics. The apparent porosity, density, and compressive strength of the specimens with gangue as the silicon source were 33.13%, 1.98 g/cm3, and 147.84 MPa, respectively, when sintered at 1300 °C for 2 h.

We demonstrate the use of functional-unit-based material design for thermoelectrics. This is an efficient approach for identifying high-performance thermoelectric materials, based on the use of combinations of functional fragments relevant to desired properties. Here, we reveal that linear triatomic resonant bonds (LTRBs) found in some Zintl compounds provide strong anisotropy both structurally and electronically, along with strong anharmonic phonon scattering. An LTRB is thus introduced as a functional unit, and compounds are then screened as potential thermoelectric materials. We identify 17 semiconducting candidates from the MatHub-3d database that contain LTRBs. Detailed transport calculations demonstrate that the LTRB-containing compounds not only have considerably lower lattice thermal conductivities than other compounds with similar average atomic masses, but also exhibit remarkable band anisotropy near the valence band maximums due to the LTRB. K5CuSb2 is adopted as an example to elucidate the fundamental correlation between the LTRB and thermoelectric properties. The [Sb-Cu-Sb]5- resonant structures demonstrate the delocalized Sb-Sb interaction within each LTRB, resulting in the softening of TA phonons and leading to large anharmonicity. The low lattice thermal conductivity (0.39 W/m·K at 300 K) combined with the band anisotropy results in a high thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) for K5CuSb2 of 1.3 at 800 K. This work is a case study of the functional-unit-based material design for the development of novel thermoelectric materials.

Sheehan's syndrome is a type of hypopituitarism caused by massive uterine bleeding and hypovolaemic shock after or during delivery. Heart involvement has been documented sporadically among the various clinical manifestations of Sheehan's syndrome but life-threatening arrhythmias are infrequent. Here, we report on two rare cases of ventricular tachycardia caused by Sheehan's syndrome. Both female patients were diagnosed with Sheehan's syndrome 30 years previously, due to massive postpartum bleeding. Both of them terminated hormone replacement therapy recently. Both patients presented with torsade de pointes. The electrocardiogram showed prolonged QT interval. In addition to potassium supplementation and anti-arrhythmia therapy, steroids and thyroid hormone replacement therapy were employed, QT-interval prolongation and T-wave inversion were normalised, and implantable cardioverter defibrillator implantation was avoided. One of the patients was recovering well at the one-year follow up and the other patient was in a coma at the time of this report. We also review the literature for cases of Sheehan's syndrome presenting with ventricular tachycardia.
