RESUMO

Alzheimer's disease is a common neurodegenerative disorder defined by decreased reasoning abilities, memory loss, and cognitive deterioration. The presence of the blood-brain barrier presents a major obstacle to the development of effective drug therapies for Alzheimer's disease. The use of ultrasound as a novel physical modulation approach has garnered widespread attention in recent years. As a safe and feasible therapeutic and drug-delivery method, ultrasound has shown promise in improving cognitive deficits. This article provides a summary of the application of ultrasound technology for treating Alzheimer's disease over the past 5 years, including standalone ultrasound treatment, ultrasound combined with microbubbles or drug therapy, and magnetic resonance imaging-guided focused ultrasound therapy. Emphasis is placed on the benefits of introducing these treatment methods and their potential mechanisms. We found that several ultrasound methods can open the blood-brain barrier and effectively alleviate amyloid-ß plaque deposition. We believe that ultrasound is an effective therapy for Alzheimer's disease, and this review provides a theoretical basis for future ultrasound treatment methods.

The investigation into the interfacial properties between fullerene compounds and Sn-based perovskites (Sn-PVSK) holds extraordinary significance for advancing efficient and stable Pb-free perovskite solar cells. This study is the first theoretical exploration to examine their interfacial properties using Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and trajectory analysis methods with C60@FASnI3 as a representative system. The impact of surface termination and FA+ rotation on interface stability has been assessed. Within the 10 ps AIMD simulations, the C60@FAI interface demonstrates greater stability compared to the C60@SnI interface due to the robustness of the single-bonded I on the FAI termination and weaker C60-FAI interactions. The C60@SnI interface has poor stability, but it can be enhanced by controlling the FA+ rotation, achieving optimal stability at a 45° rotation along the C-H bond axis. This is attributed to minimal hydrogen bond interactions and a reduced steric hindrance. This work not only substantiates the pivotal role of surface termination in maintaining interface stability but, most importantly, also reveals how FA+ rotational dynamics regulate the C60@SnI interface stability, providing valuable insights for further improving the efficiency of Sn-PVSK solar cells.

Porous organic polymers (POPs) exhibit significant potential for adsorbing toxic metal ions in wastewater. Developing POPs with controlled morphologies is a pivotal direction in this field. This study synthesized a series of novel hyper-crosslinked nanofibrous tubes designated HCNT-Cn (n = 4, 8, 12, 16) via Friedel-Crafts alkylation and quaternization reactions. These reactions were fine-tuned through a post-synthetic strategy involving varying alkyl chain lengths. These materials were characterized using FT-IR, SEM, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, among others, and they were specifically evaluated for their ability to adsorb Cr(VI). Among the variants, HCNT-C4 exhibited the highest specific surface area (495.26 m2 g-1), superior hydrophilicity (CA = 48.7°), and optimal adsorption performance. The adsorption kinetics of HCNT-C4 conformed to a pseudo-second-order model, while its adsorption isotherm aligned with the Langmuir model. An investigation into the impact of Cr(VI) removal was conducted using three independent variables in a Central Composite Design (CCD) response surface model, revealing that under optimal conditions, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency reached 98%. Additionally, a mechanism for Cr(VI) adsorption on HCNT-C4 was proposed. It was also found that HCNT-C4 could be reused up to four times, maintaining a removal efficiency of 70%. This study suggests potential applications for removing Cr(VI) from contaminated wastewater.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the factors associated with poor prognosis in critically ill patients with Electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns exhibiting stimulus-induced rhythmic, periodic, or ictal discharges (SIRPIDs), and to construct a prognostic prediction model. METHODS: This study included a total of 53 critically ill patients with EEG patterns exhibiting SIRPIDs who were admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from May 2023 to March 2024. Patients were divided into two groups based on their Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores at discharge: good prognosis group (0-3 points) and poor prognosis group (4-6 points). Retrospective analyses were performed on the clinical and EEG parameters of patients in both groups. Logistic regression analysis was applied to identify the risk factors related to poor prognosis in critically ill patients with EEG patterns exhibiting SIRPIDs; a risk prediction model for poor prognosis was constructed, along with an individualized predictive nomogram model, and the predictive performance and consistency of the model were evaluated. RESULTS: Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that APACHE II score (OR=1.217, 95 %CI=1.030∼1.438), slow frequency bands or no obvious brain electrical activity (OR=8.720, 95 %CI=1.220∼62.313), and no sleep waveforms (OR=9.813, 95 %CI=1.371∼70.223) were independent risk factors for poor prognosis in patients. A regression model established based on multivariate logistic regression analysis had an area under the curve of 0.902. The model's accuracy was 90.60 %, with a sensitivity of 92.86 % and a specificity of 89.70 %. The nomogram model, after internal validation, showed a concordance index of 0.904. CONCLUSIONS: A high APACHE II score, EEG patterns with slow frequency bands or no obvious brain electrical activity, and no sleep waveforms were independent risk factors for poor prognosis in patients with SIRPIDs. The nomogram model constructed based on these factors had a favorably high level of accuracy in predicting the risk of poor prognosis and held certain reference and application value for clinical neurofunctional assessment and prognostic determination.

The structural tailoring of Pt-based catalysts into 1D nanowires for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) has been a focus of research. Mo(CO)6 is commonly used as a morphological modifier to form nanowires, but it is found that it inevitably leads to Mo doping. This doping introduces unique electrochemical signals not seen in other Pt-based catalysts, which can directly reflect the stability of the catalyst. Through experiments, it is demonstrated that Mo doping is detrimental to ORR performance, and theoretical calculations have shown that Mo sites that are inherently inactive also poison the ORR activity of the surrounding Pt. Therefore, a novel gas-assisted technique is proposed to replace Mo(CO)6 with CO, which forms ultrafine nanowires with an order of magnitude increase in length, ruling out the effect of Mo. The catalyst performs at 1.24 A mgPt -1, 7.45 times greater than Pt/C, demonstrating significant ORR mass activity, and a substantial improvement in stability. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell using this catalyst provides a higher power density (0.7 W cm-2). This study presents a new method for the preparation of ultra-long nanowires, which opens up new avenues for future practical applications of low-Pt catalysts in PEMFC.

Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction serves as an effective strategy to tackle energy crises and mitigate greenhouse gas effects. The development of efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts has been a research hotspot in the field. In this study, we designed four Co-doped single-atom catalysts (Co-Nχ@C) using carbon nanotubes as carriers, these catalysts included tri- and dicoordinated N-doped carbon nanoribbons, as well as tri- and dicoordinated N-doped graphene, respectively denoted as H3(H2)-Co/CNT and 3(2)-Co/CNT. The stable configurations of these Co-Nχ@C catalysts were optimized using the PBE+D3 method. Additionally, we explored the reaction mechanisms of these catalysts for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 into four C1 products, including CO, HCOOH, CH3OH and CH4, in detail. Upon comparing the limiting potentials (UL) across the Co-Nχ@C catalysts, the activity sequence for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 was H2-Co/CNT > 3-Co/CNT > H3-Co/CNT > 2-Co/CNT. Meanwhile, our investigation of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with four catalysts elucidated the influence of acidic conditions on the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction process. Specifically, controlling the acidity of the solution was crucial when using the H3-Co/CNT and H2-Co/CNT catalysts, while the 3-Co/CNT and 2-Co/CNT catalysts were almost unaffected by the solution's acidity. We hope that our research will provide a theoretical foundation for designing more effective CO2 reduction electrocatalysts.

BACKGROUND: Psychological resilience is defined as the process and outcome of individuals' successful adaptation to challenging life experiences. The Habenula (Hb) is known to be involved in the stress response; however, the relationship between Hb volume and resilience in humans remains unclear. This study investigated the correlation among resilience, Hb volume, and depressive tendencies in adults. METHODS: Hb volumes were assessed using deep learning techniques applied to 110 healthy participants. Resilience and depression were evaluated using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale and Beck Depression Inventory-II, respectively. We examined the relationship between Hb volume and resilience and assessed the mediating effects of resilience on the relationship between Hb volume and depressive tendencies. RESULTS: Correlation analysis revealed a positive correlation between resilience and Hb volume (partial r = 0.176, p = 0.001), which was more pronounced in women (partial r = 0.353, p = 0.003). Hb volumes on the left and right sides exhibited significant lateralization (LI = 0.031, 95 % CI = [0.016, 0.046]). Despite Hb asymmetry, lateralization was not significantly associated with resilience. The mediation analysis shows significant indirect effect of resilience on the relationship between Hb volume and depressive tendencies (ß = -0.093, 95%CI = [-0.189, -0.019]). CONCLUSION: This study found that populations with lower resilience have smaller Hb volume. Previous research has shown that Hb volume decreased with the increasing severity of depression symptoms in patients. Our findings support this view and extend it to a population that has not been clinically diagnosed with depression. Additionally, we found that psychological resilience can be predicted by Hb volume and may serve as a mediating factor indirectly affecting depressive tendencies, even in healthy individuals. LIMITATIONS: Due to its cross-sectional design, this study was unable to analyze dynamic changes in Hb volume during the process of resilience adaptation.

Photo-thermal-coupling ammonia decomposition presents a promising strategy for utilizing the full-spectrum to address the H2 storage and transportation issues. Herein, we exhibit a photo-thermal-catalytic architecture by assembling gallium nitride nanowires-supported ruthenium nanoparticles on a silicon for extracting hydrogen from ammonia aqueous solution in a batch reactor with only sunlight input. The photoexcited charge carriers make a predomination contribution on H2 activity with the assistance of the photothermal effect. Upon concentrated light illumination, the architecture significantly reduces the activation energy barrier from 1.08 to 0.22 eV. As a result, a high turnover number of 3,400,750 is reported during 400 h of continuous light illumination, and the H2 activity per hour  is nearly 1000 times higher than that under the pure thermo-catalytic conditions. The reaction mechanism is extensively studied by coordinating experiments, spectroscopic characterizations, and density functional theory calculation. Outdoor tests validate the viability of such a multifunctional architecture for ammonia decomposition toward H2 under natural sunlight.

BACKGROUND: Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels are involved in the development and progression of tumors. However, their role in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear, and this study aims to investigate the role of TRP-related genes in CRC. METHODS: Data was obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, and analyses were conducted on the GSE14333 and GSE38832 datasets to assess the prognosis and mark TRP-related genes (TRGs). Subsequently, clustering analysis and immune infiltration analysis were performed to explore the relevant TRGs. In vitro validation of key TRGs' gene and protein expression was conducted using human colon cancer cells. RESULTS: Compared to normal tissues, 8 TRGs were significantly upregulated in CRC, while 11 were downregulated. TRPA1 was identified as a protective prognostic factor, whereas TRPM5 (HR = 1.349), TRPV4 (HR = 1.289), and TRPV3 (HR = 1.442) were identified as prognostic risk factors. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and Kaplan-Meier (KM) analyses yielded similar results. Additionally, lower expression of TRPA1 and higher expression of TRPV4 and TRPM5 were negatively correlated with patient prognosis, and experimental validation confirmed the underexpression of TRPA1 and overexpression of TRPV4 and TRPM5 in CRC cell lines. CONCLUSION: This study identifies a TRP channel-related prognosis in CRC, providing a novel approach to stratifying CRC prognosis.

Numerous studies on perceptual training exist, however, most have focused on the precision of temporal audiovisual perception, while fewer have concentrated on ability promotion for audiovisual integration (AVI). To investigate these issues, continuous 5-day audiovisual perceptual training was applied, during which electroencephalography was performed in response to auditory-only (A), visual-only (V) and audiovisual (AV) stimuli before and after training. The results showed that the perceptual sensitivity was greater for training group than for control group and was greater in the posttest than in the pretest. The response to the AV stimulus was significantly faster in the posttest than in the pretest for the older training group but was significantly greater for A and V stimuli for the younger training group. Electroencephalography analysis found higher P3 AVI amplitudes [AV-(A + V)] in the posttest than in the pretest for training group, which were subsequently reflected by an increased alpha (8-12 Hz) oscillatory response and strengthened global functional connectivity (weighted phase lag index). Furthermore, these facilitations were greater for older training groups than for younger training groups. These results confirm the age-related compensatory mechanism for AVI may be strengthened as audiovisual perceptual training progresses, providing an effective candidate for cognitive intervention in older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) refers to individuals' perceived decline in memory and/or other cognitive abilities relative to their previous level of performance. Sensory decline is one of the main manifestations of decline in older adults with SCD. The efficient integration of visual and auditory information, known as audiovisual integration, is a crucial perceptual process. This study aims to evaluate audiovisual integration in older adults with SCD. METHODS: We adopted the audiovisual detection task, the Colavita task, and the Sound-Induced Flash Illusion (SIFI) task to evaluate the audiovisual integration by examining both redundant and illusory effects. Older adults diagnosed with SCD (N = 50, mean age = 67.8 years) and a control group of non-SCD older adults (N = 51, mean age = 66.5 years) were recruited. All participants took part in the three aforementioned experiments. RESULTS: The outcomes showed that a redundant effect occurred in both SCD and non-SCD older adults, with SCD older adults gaining more benefits in audiovisual detection task. Moreover, an equivalent amount of the visual dominance effect was observed among both SCD and non-SCD older adults in Colavita task. In addition, older adults with SCD perceived an equal fission illusion but a bigger fusion illusion compared with non-SCD older adults in SIFI task. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, older adults with SCD exhibit increased audiovisual redundant effects and stronger fusion illusion susceptibility compared to non-SCD older adults. Besides, visual dominance was observed in both groups via the Colavita task, with no significant difference between non-SCD and SCD older adults. These findings implied that audiovisual integration might offer a potential way for the identification of SCD.

The association between anal fistula patients and colorectal cancer, as well as the potential pathophysiological mechanisms, remains unclear. To explore the relationship between anal fistula and colorectal cancer and its potential mechanisms. Analysis of GEO and TCGA databases. Disease-related genes were also referenced from Coremine Medical, GeneCard and OMIM. Core hub genes were identified through protein-protein interaction analysis by intersecting differentially expressed genes from the datasets with disease data. On one hand, a prognostic model was developed using genes and its prognostic role was validated. On the other hand, the optimal diagnostic genes were selected through machine learning. Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted to explore the potential causal link between anal fistula and colorectal cancer. Thirteen core genes were identified (TMEM121B, PDGFRA, MID2, WNT10B, HOXD13, BARX1, SIX2, MMP1, SNAL1, CDKN2A, ITGB3, TIMP1, CALB2). Functional enrichment analysis revealed that the intersecting genes between anal fistula and colorectal cancer were associated with extracellular matrix components, signalling pathways, cell growth, protein modification, as well as important roles in cellular activities, tissue and organ development, and biological function maintenance. These genes were also involved in pathways related to Wnt signalling and colorectal cancer development. Prognostic analysis and immune infiltration analysis indicated a close relationship between core hub genes and the prognosis and immune infiltration in colorectal cancer. Machine learning showed that core genes played an essential role in the diagnostic differentiation of colorectal cancer. MR results suggested no causal relationship between anal fistula and colorectal cancer. This study identified shared core genes between anal fistula and colorectal cancer, involved in various pathways related to tumour development. These genes play crucial roles in prognosis and diagnosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There is no evidence on antioxidant-rich diets in preventing hypertension in heat-exposed workers. We aimed to evaluate the effects of formula supplemented with vitamin C (Vit C) and hawthorn beverage on reducing blood pressure (BP) and oxidative stress levels in heat-exposed workers. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: In the 40-day cluster-randomized controlled trial, four heat-exposed shift-teams were enrolled and randomly assigned to the intervention and control groups. The intervention group was given one Vit C tablet (130 mg) and a 500 mL hawthorn beverage containing 278.7 mg flavonoids daily whereas the control group was given 500 mL of slightly salted water daily; both groups were provided education on a healthy diet. BP and creatinine-corrected urinary 8-isoprostane-prostaglandin F2α (8-iso-PGF2α/Cr) concentrations were assessed at baseline, Day 17 (only BP) and Day 41, respectively. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), and log10-transformed 8-iso-PGF2α/Cr in the inter-vention group decreased by 7.41 mmHg, 7.93 mmHg and 0.232, respectively, from baseline to day 41 (all p<0.05). When comparing BP levels at baseline, DBP in the intervention group was reduced by 5.46 mmHg when compared to control (p<0.05) among participants with lower baseline BP; SBP and DBP experienced reductions of 9.74 and 9.22 mmHg among participants with higher baseline BP (both p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Supplementation of Vit C and flavonoids rich hawthorn beverage to heat-exposed workers prevented elevated BP caused by heat exposure which may be attributed to its oxidative stress inhibition effects.

Coccidiosis poses a significant challenge to the poultry industry. However, the excessive and improper use of anticoccidial drugs and vaccines has led to resistance and food safety concerns. Consequently, traditional Chinese herbs have garnered attention as a potentially safer and more effective alternative. ChangQing compound derived from various Chinese herbal medicines is a promising anticoccidiosis agent, but its therapeutic effects have not been comprehensively evaluated. This study aimed to assess the therapeutic efficacy of ChangQing Compound against Eimeria tenella-induced coccidiosis in chickens on the basis of physiological indicators, cecum lesions, and changes in microbial diversity. The comparison with the positive control group revealed the average weight gain (AWG) and anticoccidial index (ACI) of the chicks were significantly higher, in contrast, the feed conversion ratio (FCR), cecal lesion score (CLS), and oocyst count per gram of cecal content (OPG) were significantly lower (P<0.05). Notably, AWG (138.87 g), OPG (0.57 × 106), ACI (177.92), and FCR (2.51) reflected the significant therapeutic effect of the 2.5 g/L ChangQing compound treatment (CQM). Histological sections showed that the cecal villus damage and intestinal wall swelling were minimal in the CQM, consistent with the CLS (0.73). Additionally, the 2.5 g/L ChangQing compound treatment effectively prevented the decrease of red blood cells, platelets, and hemoglobin, while promoting the release of anti-inflammatory factors interleukin-10 and interleukin-4, and inhibiting the pro-inflammatory factors interferon-γ and interleukin-17. The microbial community structure in the CQM was most similar to that of the negative control group. In summary, ChangQing compound had multiple positive effects (e.g., promoting weight gain, alleviating anemia, suppressing coccidial proliferation, reducing intestinal damage, modulating immunity, and maintaining intestinal microbiota homeostasis). The study results may be relevant to developing a novel strategy for the clinical management of coccidiosis.

Nowadays, traditional single-omics study is not enough to explain the causality between molecular alterations and toxicity endpoints for environmental pollutants. With the development of high-throughput sequencing technology and high-resolution mass spectrometry technology, the integrative analysis of multi-omics has become an efficient strategy to understand holistic biological mechanisms and to uncover the regulation network in specific biological processes. This review summarized sample preparation methods, integration analysis tools and the application of multi-omics integration analyses in environmental toxicology field. Currently, omics methods have been widely applied being as the sensitivity of early biological response, especially for low-dose and long-term exposure to environmental pollutants. Integrative omics can reveal the overall changes of genes, proteins, and/or metabolites in the cells, tissues or organisms, which provide new insights into revealing the overall toxicity effects, screening the toxic targets, and exploring the underlying molecular mechanism of pollutants.

RESUMO

A near-resonant excitation strategy is proposed and implemented in a 4-µm-thick GaN microcavity to realize an exciton-polariton condensate/lasing with low threshold. Strong exciton-photon coupling is demonstrated, and polariton lasing is realized with an ultra-low threshold excitation power density of about 13.3 W/cm2 at room temperature. Such an ultra-low threshold is ascribed to the implementation of the near-resonant optical excitation strategy, which enables acceleration of the exciton and polariton relaxation and suppression of the heat generation in the cavity, thereby reducing the energy loss and enhance the cavity excitation efficiency.

Background and objective: Neurocritical patients often experience uncontrolled high catabolic metabolism state during the acuta phase of the disease. The complex interactions of neuroendocrine, inflammation, and immune system lead to massive protein breakdown and changes in body composition. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) evaluates the content and proportions of body components based on the principles of bioelectricity. Its parameters reflect the overall health status of the body and the integrity of cellular structure and function, playing an important role in assessing the disease status and predicting prognosis of such patients. This study explored the association of BIA parameters trajectories with clinical outcomes in neurocritical patients. Methods: This study prospectively collected BIA parameters of 127 neurocritical patients in the Department of Neurology admitted to the NICU for the first 1-7 days. All these patients were adults (≥18 years old) experiencing their first onset of illness and were in the acute phase of the disease. The group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM), which aims to identify individuals following similar developmental trajectories, was used to identify potential subgroups of individuals based on BIA parameters. The short-term prognosis of patients in each trajectory group with variations in phase angle (PA) and extracellular water/total body water (ECW/TBW) over time was differentially analyzed, and the logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between potential trajectory groups of PA and ECW/TBW and the short-term prognosis of neurocritical patients. The outcome was Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) score at discharge. Results: Four PA trajectories and four ECW/TBW trajectories were detected respectively in neurocritical patients. Among them, compared with the other latent subgroups, the "Low PA rapidly decreasing subgroup" and the "High ECW/TBW slowly rising subgroup" had higher incidences of adverse outcomes at discharge (GOS:1-3), in-hospital mortality, and length of neurology intensive care unit stay (all P < 0.05). After correcting for potential confounders, compared with the "Low PA rapidly decreasing subgroup", the risk of adverse outcome (GOS:1-3) was lower in the other three PA trajectories, with OR values of 0.0003, 0.0004, and 0.003 respectively (all P < 0.05). Compared with the "High ECW/TBW slowly rising subgroup", the risk of adverse outcome (GOS:1-3) was lower in the other three ECW/TBW trajectories, with OR values of 0.013, 0.035 and 0.038 respectively (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: Latent PA trajectories and latent ECW/TBW trajectories during 1-7 days after admission were associated with the clinical outcomes of neurocritical patients. The risk of adverse outcomes was highest in the "Low PA rapidly decreasing subgroup" and the "High ECW/TBW slowly rising subgroup". These results reflected the overall health status and nutritional condition of neurocritical patients at the onset of the disease, and demonstrated the dynamic change process in body composition caused by the inflammatory response during the acute phase of the disease. This provided a reference basis for the observation and prognostic evaluation of such patients.

BACKGROUND: The short-term prognosis of stroke patients is mainly influenced by the severity of the primary disease at admission and the trend of disease development during the acute phase (1-7 days after admission). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between the bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) parameter trajectories during the acute phase of stroke patients and their short-term prognosis, and to investigate the predictive value of the prediction model constructed using BIA parameter trajectories and clinical indicators at admission for short-term prognosis in stroke patients. METHODS: A total of 162 stroke patients were prospectively enrolled, and their clinical indicators at admission and BIA parameters during the first 1-7 days of admission were collected. A Group-Based Trajectory Model (GBTM) was employed to identify different subgroups of longitudinal trajectories of BIA parameters during the first 1-7 days of admission in stroke patients. The random forest algorithm was applied to screen BIA parameter trajectories and clinical indicators with predictive value, construct prediction models, and perform model comparisons. The outcome measure was the Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at discharge. RESULTS: PA in BIA parameters can be divided into four separate trajectory groups. The incidence of poor prognosis (mRS: 4-6) at discharge was significantly higher in the "Low PA Rapid Decline Group" (85.0%) than in the "High PA Stable Group " (33.3%) and in the "Medium PA Slow Decline Group "(29.5%) (all P < 0.05). In-hospital mortality was the highest in the "Low PA Rapid Decline Group" (60%) compared with the remaining trajectory groups (P < 0.05). Compared with the prediction model with only clinical indicators (Model 1), the prediction model with PA trajectories (Model 2) demonstrated higher predictive accuracy and efficacy. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of Model 2 was 0.909 [95% CI 0.863, 0.956], integrated discrimination improvement index (IDI), 0.035 (P < 0.001), and net reclassification improvement (NRI), 0.175 (P = 0.031). CONCLUSION: PA trajectories during the first 1-7 days of admission are associated with the short-term prognosis of stroke patients. PA trajectories have additional value in predicting the short-term prognosis of stroke patients.

Studies have indicated that medium- to long-duration spaceflight may adversely affect astronauts' emotional and social functioning. Emotion modulation can significantly impact astronauts' well-being, performance, mission safety and success. However, with the increase in flight time, the potential alterations in emotional and social performance during spaceflight and their underlying mechanisms remain to be investigated, and targeted therapeutic and preventive interventions have yet to be identified. We evaluated the changes of emotional and social functions in mice with the extension of the time in simulated space complex environment (SSCE), and simultaneously monitored changes in brain tissue of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), and inflammation-related factors. Furthermore, we assessed the regulatory role of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in mood and socialization with the extension of the time in SSCE, as well as examining alterations of VEGF signaling in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Our findings revealed that mice exposed to SSCE for 7 days exhibited depressive-like behaviors, with these changes persisting throughout SSCE period. In addition, 14 days of rTMS treatment significantly ameliorated SSCE-induced emotional and social dysfunction, potentially through modulation of the level of VEGF signaling in mPFC. These results indicates that emotional and social disorders increase with the extension of SSCE time, and rTMS can improve the performance, which may be related to VEGF signaling. This study offers insights into potential pattern of change over time for mental health issues in astronauts. Further analysis revealed that rTMS modulates emotional and social dysfunction during SSCE exposure, with its mechanism potentially being associated with VEGF signaling.

Predicting the timing of incoming information allows brain to optimize information processing in dynamic environments. However, the effects of temporal predictions on tactile perception are not well established. In this study, two experiments were conducted to determine how temporal predictions interact with conditional probabilities in tactile perceptual processing. In Experiment 1, we explored the range of the interval between preceding ready cues and imperative targets in which temporal prediction effects can be observed. This prediction effect was observed for intervals of 500 and 1,000 ms. In Experiment 2, we investigated the benefits of temporal predictions on tactile perception while manipulating the conditional probability (setting the stimulus onset earlier or later than the predicted moment in short and long intervals). Our results revealed that this effect became stronger as the probability of the stimulus at the predicted time point increased under short-interval conditions. Together, our results show that the difficulty of transferring processing resources increases in temporally dynamic environments, suggesting a greater subjective cost associated with maladaptive responses to temporally uncertain events.
