Objective: This retrospective study aimed to investigate the clinical features of optic neuritis associated with COVID-19 (COVID-19 ON), comparing them with neuromyelitis optica-associated optic neuritis (NMO-ON), myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-associated optic neuritis (MOG-ON), and antibody-negative optic neuritis (antibody-negative ON). Methods: Data from 117 patients (145 eyes) with optic neuritis at the Shantou International Eye Center (March 2020-June 2023) were categorized into four groups based on etiology: Group 1 (neuromyelitis optica-related optic neuritis, NMO-ON), Group 2 (myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein optic neuritis, MOG-ON), Group 3 (antibody-negative optic neuritis, antibody-negative ON), and Group 4 (optic neuritis associated with COVID-19, COVID-19 ON). Characteristics of T2 and enhancement in orbital magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were assessed. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was compared before treatment, at a short-term follow-up (14 days), and at the last follow-up after treatment. Results: The COVID-19-associated optic neuritis (COVID-19 ON) group exhibited 100% bilateral involvement, significantly surpassing other groups (P < 0.001). Optic disk edema was observed in 100% of COVID-19 ON cases, markedly differing from neuromyelitis optica-related optic neuritis (NMO-ON) (P = 0.023). Orbital magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed distinctive long-segment lesions without intracranial involvement in T1-enhanced sequences for the COVID-19 ON group compared to the other three groups (P < 0.001). Discrepancies in optic nerve sheath involvement were noted between the COVID-19 ON group and both NMO-ON and antibody-negative optic neuritis (antibody-negative ON) groups (P = 0.028). Before treatment, no significant difference in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) existed between the COVID-19 ON group and other groups. At the 14-day follow-up, BCVA in the COVID-19 ON group outperformed the NMO-ON (P < 0.001) and antibody-negative ON (P = 0.028) groups, with no significant difference observed compared to the myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein optic neuritis (MOG-ON) group. At the last follow-up after treatment, BCVA in the COVID-19 ON group significantly differed from the NMO-ON group (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Optic neuritis associated with COVID-19 (COVID-19 ON) predominantly presents with bilateral onset and optic disk edema. Orbital magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrates that COVID-19 ON presents as long-segment enhancement without the involvement of the intracranial segment of the optic nerve in T1-enhanced images. Glucocorticoid therapy showed positive outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) appears to be a promising technique for the removal of sessile serrated polyps (SSPs) ≥ 10 mm. To assess the effectiveness and safety of EMR for removing SSPs ≥ 10 mm, we conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: We conducted a thorough search of Embase, PubMed, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases for relevant studies reporting on EMR of SSPs ≥ 10 mm, up until December 2023. Our primary endpoints of interest were rates of technical success, residual SSPs, and adverse events (AE). RESULTS: Our search identified 426 articles, of which 14 studies with 2262 SSPs were included for analysis. The rates of technical success, AEs, and residual SSPs were 100%, 2.0%, and 3.1%, respectively. Subgroup analysis showed that the technical success rates were the same for polyps 10-19 and 20 mm, and en-bloc and piecemeal resection. Residual SSPs rates were similar in en-bloc and piecemeal resection, but much lower in cold EMR (1.0% vs. 4.2%, P = 0.034). AEs rates were reduced in cold EMR compared to hot EMR (0% vs. 2.9%, P = 0.168), in polyps 10-19 mm compared to 20 mm (0% vs. 4.1%, P = 0.255), and in piecemeal resection compared to en-bloc (0% vs. 0.7%, P = 0.169). CONCLUSIONS: EMR is an effective and safe technique for removing SSPs ≥ 10 mm. The therapeutic effect of cold EMR is superior to that of hot EMR, with a lower incidence of adverse effects. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The objective of this investigation was to assess the therapeutic efficacy of distinct glucocorticoid therapy dosages in the management of acute nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, unmasked, and non-randomized study included a total of 85 patients. The patients were categorized into four groups: Group 1 (control) consisted of 15 patients who did not receive glucocorticoids, Group 2 included 16 patients administered with oral prednisone at a dosage of 1 mg/kg/d for 14 days, Group 3 comprised 30 patients who received 250 units of methylprednisolone once daily for 3 days, followed by oral prednisone at a dosage of 1 mg/kg/d for 11 days, and Group 4 encompassed 24 patients who received 500 units of methylprednisolone once daily for 3 days, followed by oral prednisone at a dosage of 1 mg/kg/d for 11 days. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was assessed at baseline and the final follow-up (> 7 days post-treatment). The changes in visual acuity between baseline and the 7-14 day follow-up, as well as between baseline and the concluding appraisal, were employed as metrics for assessing the extent of visual enhancement. RESULTS: No significant differences were noted in the final visual outcomes or in the changes between final visual acuity and baseline across the four groups. In Group 1 (control), the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) remained unchanged during final follow-ups compared to baseline. Conversely, the intervention groups exhibited statistically significant enhancements in BCVA during final follow-up (p = 0.012, p = 0.03, and p = 0.009 for Group 2, Group 3, and Group 4, respectively) when compared to baseline. During the 7-14 day follow-up, there was a significant difference in the changes between baseline BCVA and follow-up BCVA across the groups (p = 0.035). Go a step further by Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons, group 4 showed a greater change in vision compared with group1 (p = 0.045). CONCLUSION: Our study on acute nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) showed no significant final visual outcome differences. Nevertheless, Groups 2, 3, and 4 demonstrated improved best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) during the final follow-up. Notably, a 500-unit dose of methylprednisolone resulted in short-term BCVA enhancement. This suggests potential consideration of 500 units of methylprednisolone for short-term NAION vision improvement, despite its limited long-term impact.

BACKGROUND: The aims of this study were to evaluate the feasibility of allergy test dosage of fluorescein sodium (1%) for Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) detection in Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) examination as compared to the regular dosage (20%). METHODS: Totally 77 eyes from 42 DR patients were included in this prospective study. Capillary non-perfusion area, neovascularization, diabetic macular edema and microaneurysms were measured by FFA and compared at 1, 5 and 15 min after intravenous injection of 1% or 20% fluorescein sodium. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference in the proportions of capillary non-perfusion area and diabetic macular edema as well as the amount of neovascularization between the 1% and 20% fluorescein sodium groups. Yet, the 1% group had a significantly a smaller number of microaneurysms than the 20% group at 1 min (p < 0.001) and a smaller number of eyes with diabetic macular edema than the 20% group at 5 (p = 0.032) and 15 min (p = 0.015). The images from patients with clear vitreous had better quality than the images from patients with vitreous opacity (all p < 0.05, except comparison on neovascularization at 5 min: p > 0.999). All examined indexes showed high correlations between the 1% and 20% groups (r > 0.8, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that 1% fluorescein sodium could detect the changes of DR comparably to the regular dosage.

BACKGROUND: In this paper, we present a 9-year-old boy who demonstrates a complex interplay between myopia progression, axial length (AL) extension, and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness loss in both eyes. Additionally, concurrent optic neuritis has directly impacted RNFL thickness in his right eye, and its potential indirect influence on RNFL and macular ganglion cell layer (mGCL) thickness in his left eye is also noteworthy. CASE SUMMARY: A 9-year-old boy with bilateral myopia presented with diminished vision and pain in his right eye due to optic neuritis, while his left eye showed pseudopapilledema. Steroid therapy improved his vision in the right eye, and 16-mo follow-up revealed recovery without recurrence despite myopia progression. Follow-up optical coherence tomography conducted 16 mo later revealed a notable thinning of the RNFL in both eyes, especially along with a reduction in mGCL thickness in the left eye. This intricate interaction between optic neuritis, myopia, and retinal changes underscores the need for comprehensive management, highlighting potential long-term visual implications in young patients. CONCLUSION: The progression of myopia and AL extension led to the loss of RNFL thickness in both eyes in a 9-year-old boy. Concurrently, optic neuritis directly affected RNFL thickness in his right eye and may indirectly play a role in the thickness of RNFL and mGCL in his left eye.

In order to explore the environmental geochemistry characteristics of heavy metals (HMs) in soil-crop systems in an old industrial city, the concentration and fraction of HMs in the paddy, wheat, and maize root soil and their seeds were detected and analyzed. Subsequently, statistical methods, risk assessment coding (RAC), the bio-enrichment coefficient factor (BCF), influence index of comprehensive quality (IICQ), and ArcGIS spatial interpolation were used to conduct the translocation, accumulation, and comprehensive risk assessment of HMs in soil-crop systems. The results showed that the average concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn in root soil were ranked respectively as follows:12.56, 0.19, 63.48, 23.52, 0.038, 28.86, 21.68, and 69.47 mg·kg-1. HMs in root soil were accumulated to some extent in comparison with the soil background value in Ningxia, especially Cd and Hg, but did not exceed the soil environmental pollution screening value (GB 14618-2018). The average concentrations of the eight aforementioned elements in supporting crop seeds were 0.0149, 0.0112, 0.075, 6.7, 0.0015, 0.67, 0.0427, and 20.48 mg·kg-1 in turn. The over-limit ratio of As, Pb, and Cr in crop seeds was 4%, 3%, and 1%, respectively, relative to the national food safety standards (GB 2762-2017), whereas the other five elements were within the allowable range. In comparison to those in paddy and wheat, HMs hardly tended to translocate to maize seeds from root soil. According to the results of IICQ in soil-crop systems, the cultivated soil was in the state of slight sub-contamination regionally, and only 10% of sampling points showed slight (sub-)contamination-submoderate contamination, where we could replant maize to reduce HMs contamination risk.

PURPOSE: To establish a multilabel-based deep learning (DL) algorithm for automatic detection and categorization of clinically significant peripheral retinal lesions using ultrawide-field fundus images. METHODS: A total of 5958 ultrawide-field fundus images from 3740 patients were randomly split into a training set, validation set, and test set. A multilabel classifier was developed to detect rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, cystic retinal tuft, lattice degeneration, and retinal breaks. Referral decision was automatically generated based on the results of each disease class. t -distributed stochastic neighbor embedding heatmaps were used to visualize the features extracted by the neural networks. Gradient-weighted class activation mapping and guided backpropagation heatmaps were generated to investigate the image locations for decision-making by the DL models. The performance of the classifier(s) was evaluated by sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, F 1 score, area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) with 95% CI, and area under the precision-recall curve. RESULTS: In the test set, all categories achieved a sensitivity of 0.836-0.918, a specificity of 0.858-0.989, an accuracy of 0.854-0.977, an F 1 score of 0.400-0.931, an AUROC of 0.9205-0.9882, and an area under the precision-recall curve of 0.6723-0.9745. The referral decisions achieved an AUROC of 0.9758 (95% CI= 0.9648-0.9869). The multilabel classifier had significantly better performance in cystic retinal tuft detection than the binary classifier (AUROC= 0.9781 vs 0.6112, P < 0.001). The model showed comparable performance with human experts. CONCLUSIONS: This new DL model of a multilabel classifier is capable of automatic, accurate, and early detection of clinically significant peripheral retinal lesions with various sample sizes. It can be applied in peripheral retinal screening in clinics.

Basalts and mantle peridotites of mid-ocean ridges are thought to sample Earth's upper mantle. Osmium isotopes of abyssal peridotites uniquely preserve melt extraction events throughout Earth history, but existing records only indicate ages up to ~2 billion years (Ga) ago. Thus, the memory of the suspected large volumes of mantle lithosphere that existed in Archean time (>2.5 Ga) has apparently been lost somehow. We report abyssal peridotites with melt-depletion ages up to 2.8 Ga, documented by extremely unradiogenic 187Os/188Os ratios (to as low as 0.1095) and refractory major elements that compositionally resemble the deep keels of Archean cratons. These oceanic rocks were thus derived from the once-extensive Archean continental keels that have been dislodged and recycled back into the mantle, the feasibility of which we confirm with numerical modeling. This unexpected connection between young oceanic and ancient continental lithosphere indicates an underappreciated degree of compositional recycling over time.

The (co)variance components and corresponding phenotypic and genetic parameters for growth traits and wool traits of economic importance were estimated in the Alpine Merino sheep population maintained at Gansu Provincial Sheep Breeding Technology Extension Station in northwestern China. Data from a maximum of 49,474 animals sired by 526 rams and born from 22,531 ewes over 20 years from 2000 to 2019 were used in this study. Birth type, age of dam, birth year, sex and/or management group, and age at measurement were initially fitted as fixed effects in an animal model with various random effects. Genetic groups were defined for all animals by the sire breed and breed genotype interacted with dam-strain flocks and were fitted as one of the random effects. Analyses were conducted using a residual maximum likelihood procedure (ASReml). Seven different animal models were fitted for all traits, and the most appropriate model with relevant random effects was selected through log-likelihood ratio testing. After identifying the appropriate model through single-trait analysis, bivariate analyses were used to obtain the phenotypic and genetic correlations among the traits. The estimates of additive direct heritability for birth weight (BWT), weaning weight (WWT), preweaning growth rate (prwADG), postweaning growth rate (powADG), yearling body weight (YWT), average fibre diameter (AFD), greasy fleece weight (GFW), clean fleece weight (CFW), yield (YLD), yearling wool staple length (YSL), coefficient of variation of average fibre diameter (FDcv) and wool visual fineness counts (VFC) were 0.30, 0.18, 0.18, 0.20, 0.29, 0.20, 0.19, 0.20, 0.35, 0.19, 0.16 and 0.13, respectively, with standard errors ranging from 0.02 to 0.05. The corresponding ratios of genetic group variance to additive genetic variance were significant and, respectively, 0.35, 0.80, 0.62, 0.26, 0.13, 1.06, 0.38, 0.64, 0.09, 0.12, 0.06 and 0.58. These results suggest for these traits that there is potential to exploit both the additive genetic variation and between genetic group variation although for most traits the between group variation was smaller than the variation within groups. Favourable genetic correlations were found among the growth traits, and between growth traits and fleece production traits, and among wool traits GFW, CFW, YSL and YLD. This study provides the required estimates of genetic parameters of both growth and wool traits of the new breed for the design of more effective breeding programmes.

Zoysia japonica is a warm-season turfgrass that is extensively used in landscaping, sports fields, and golf courses worldwide. Uncovering the low-temperature response mechanism of Z. japonica can help to accelerate the development of new cold-tolerant cultivars, which could be used to prolong the ornamental and usage duration of turf. A novel Z. japonica biotype, YueNong-9 (YN-9), was collected from northeastern China for this study. Phenotypic measurements, cold-tolerance investigation, and whole-transcriptome surveys were performed on YN-9 and LanYin-3 (LY-3), the most popular Z. japonica cultivar in Southern China. The results indicated the following: YN-9 has longer second and third leaves than LY-3; when exposed to the natural low temperature during winter in Guangzhou, YN-9 accumulated 4.74 times more anthocyanin than LY-3; after cold acclimation and freezing treatment, 83.25 ± 9.55% of YN-9 survived while all LY-3 leaves died, and the dark green color index (DGCI) value of YN-9 was 1.78 times that of LY-3; in YN-9, there was a unique up-regulation of Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), Homeobox-leucine Zipper IV (HD-ZIP), and ATP-Binding Cassette transporter B8 (ABCB8) expressions, as well as a unique down-regulation of zinc-regulated transporters and iron-regulated transporter-like proteins (ZIPs) expression, which may promote anthocyanin biosynthesis, transport, and accumulation. In conclusion, YN-9 exhibited enhanced cold tolerance and is thus an excellent candidate for breeding cold-tolerant Z. japonica variety, and its unique low-temperature-induced anthocyanin accumulation and gene responses provide ideas and candidate genes for the study of low-temperature tolerance mechanisms and genetic engineering breeding.

Dense SiC ceramics were fabricated by high-temperature physical vapor transport (HTPVT) growth process using SiC nanoarrays as the crystal seeds, which was obtained by vacuum heat treatment of amorphous SiC films prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) with a porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template. In the HTPVT process, two-step holding was adopted, and the temperature at the first step was controlled at 2100 and 2150 °C to avoid SiC nanoarrays evaporation, and the grain size of SiC crystal increased with the increase in temperature and decrease in the pressure of Ar. The temperature of the second step was 2300 °C, and rapid SiC grain growth and gradual densification were achieved. The prepared SiC ceramics exhibited a relative density of more than 99%, an average grain size of about 100 µm, a preferred orientation along the (0 0 0 6) plane, a Vickers hardness of about 29 GPa, a flexural strength of about 360 MPa, and thermal conductivity at room temperature of more than 200 W·m-1·K-1.

With the advantage of reversible shape-morphing between two different permanent shapes under external stimuli, the two-way shape-memory aerogel is expected to become a preferred aerogel for developing practical applications in actuators, sensors, robotics, and more. Herein, the first two-way shape-memory liquid crystal elastomer (LCE)-based aerogel is prepared by an orthogonal heat and light curing strategy coupled with an intermediate mechanical stretching step. The differential scanning calorimetry, temperature-varied wide-angle X-ray scattering, and polarizing optical microscope results indicate that the aerogel possesses a liquid crystal phase and the insider mesogens are well-oriented along the stretching direction. In addition to having superior compressibility and excellent shape stability, this LCE-based aerogel can perform a reversible shape deformation during the heating/cooling cycles with a shrinkage ratio of 37%. The work, that is disclosed here, realizes a truly two-way shape-memory behavior rather than the one-way shape deformation of traditional polymer aerogel materials, and may promote potential applications of this novel LCE-based aerogel material in control devices, soft actuators, and beyond.

Retinal fundus diseases can lead to irreversible visual impairment without timely diagnoses and appropriate treatments. Single disease-based deep learning algorithms had been developed for the detection of diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. Here, we developed a deep learning platform (DLP) capable of detecting multiple common referable fundus diseases and conditions (39 classes) by using 249,620 fundus images marked with 275,543 labels from heterogenous sources. Our DLP achieved a frequency-weighted average F1 score of 0.923, sensitivity of 0.978, specificity of 0.996 and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.9984 for multi-label classification in the primary test dataset and reached the average level of retina specialists. External multihospital test, public data test and tele-reading application also showed high efficiency for multiple retinal diseases and conditions detection. These results indicate that our DLP can be applied for retinal fundus disease triage, especially in remote areas around the world.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic repair is recommended for young patients with full-thickness rotator cuff tears (RCTs), but the healing rates have raised concerns. The Southern California Orthopedic Institute (SCOI) row method has been developed based on greater than 3 decades of experience with excellent clinical outcomes; however, studies with a focus on the younger patient population are limited in number. The current study assessed the short-term clinical outcome and the initial tendon-to-bone healing in a young cohort after repair of a full-thickness RCT using the SCOI row method. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed. Patients < 55 years of age who had a full-thickness RCT and underwent an arthroscopic repair using the SCOI row method were reviewed. Clinical outcomes were assessed at baseline, and 3 and 6 months post-operatively. The visual analog scale (VAS), University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) scale, and Constant-Murley score were completed to assess pain and function. Active range of motion was also examined, including abduction and flexion of the involved shoulder. A preoperative MRI was obtained to assess the condition of the torn tendon, while 3- and 6-month postoperative MRIs were obtained to assess tendon-to-bone healing. Repeated measurement ANOVA and chi-square tests were used as indicated. RESULTS: Eighty-nine patients (57 males and 32 females) with a mean age of 44.1 ± 8.6 years who met the criteria were included in the study. Compared with baseline, clinical outcomes were significantly improved 3 and 6 months postoperatively based on improvement in the VAS, UCLA score, and Constant-Murley score, as well as range of motion. Greater improvement was also noted at the 6-month postoperative assessment compared to the 3-month postoperative assessment. Three- and six-month postoperative MRIs demonstrated intact repairs in all shoulders and footprint regeneration, which supported satisfactory tendon-to-bone healing. The mean thickness of regeneration tissue was 7.35 ± 0.76 and 7.75 ± 0.79 mm as measured from the 3- and 6-month MRI (P = 0.002). The total satisfactory rate was 93.3 %. CONCLUSIONS: Arthroscopic primary rotator cuff repair of a full-thickness RCT using the SCOI row method in patients < 55 years of age yields favorable clinical outcomes and early footprint regeneration.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We sought to compare the efficacy and safety between endoscopic radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and stent placement alone in patients with unresectable extrahepatic biliary cancer (EBC). METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, patients with locally advanced or metastatic cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) or ampullary cancer who were unsuitable for surgery were recruited from 3 tertiary centers. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to RFA plus plastic stent placement (RFA group) or plastic stent placement alone (stent placement alone group) in a 1:1 ratio. Both groups underwent 2 scheduled interventions with an interval of approximately 3 months. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS). RESULTS: Altogether, 174 participants completed the 2 index endoscopic interventions. No significant differences in baseline characteristics were noted between the 2 groups. The median OS was significantly higher in the RFA group (14.3 vs 9.2 months; hazard ratio, .488; 95% confidence interval, .351-.678; P < .001). A survival benefit was also shown in patients with CCA (13.3 vs 9.2 months; hazard ratio, .546; 95% confidence interval, .386-.771; P < .001). However, no significant between-group differences were found in jaundice control or stent patency duration. The postprocedural Karnofsky performance scores were significantly higher in the RFA group until 9 months (all P < .001). Adverse events were comparable between the 2 groups (27.6% vs 19.5%, P = .211), except for acute cholecystitis, which was more frequently observed in the RFA group (9 vs 0, P = .003). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with stent placement alone, additional RFA may improve OS and quality of life of patients with inoperable primary EBC who do not undergo systemic treatments. INTRODUCTION: Pancreaticopleural fistula (PPF) is a rare but serious complication of pancreatic disorders. As the clinical presentations of PPF are often deceptive, it can cause a delay in the timely diagnosis and proper treatment. PPF is extremely uncommon in pediatric patients, and diagnostic and management strategies for PPF among pediatric patients are scanty. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 12-year-old girl presented with cough and dyspnea owing to massive right-side pleural effusion confirmed by Chest X-ray. Biochemical examination of pleural effusion revealed a significant elevation of amylase level. Imaging modalities showed dilated pancreatic duct and fistulous tract connecting pancreatic duct and right thorax. DIAGNOSIS: Chronic pancreatitis with PPF was diagnosed. INTERVENTIONS: Medical therapy was initially attempted for 2 weeks. Endoscopic therapy with naso-pancreatic drainage tube placement was then performed without any complications after failed medical therapy. OUTCOMES: The patient has remained healthy and symptom-free during 2 years of follow-up. CONCLUSION: When pediatric patients presented with recurrent pleural effusion with unknown etiology, PPF should be taken into consideration. Pleural effusion amylase level is the most important laboratory test and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography is recommended to visualize the fistula. Optimal management of PPF should be based on pancreatic duct morphology.

BACKGROUND: Cancer subtyping has mainly relied on pathological and molecular means. Massively parallel sequencing-enabled subtyping requires genomic markers to be developed based on global features rather than individual mutations for effective implementation. METHODS: In the present study, the whole genome sequences (WGS) of 110 liver cancers of Japanese patients published with different pathologies were analyzed with respect to their single nucleotide variations (SNVs) comprising both gain-of-heterozygosity (GOH) and loss-of-heterozygosity (LOH) mutations, the signatures of combined GOH and LOH mutations, along with recurrent copy number variations (CNVs). RESULTS: The results, obtained based on the WGS sequences as well as the Exome subset within the WGSs that covered ~ 2.0% of the WGS and the AluScan-subset within the WGSs that were amplifiable by Alu element-consensus primers and covered ~ 2.1% of the WGS, indicated that the WGS samples could be employed with the mutational parameters of SNV load, LOH%, the Signature α%, and survival-associated recurrent CNVs (srCNVs) as genomic markers for subtyping to stratify liver cancer patients prognostically into the long and short survival subgroups. The usage of the AluScan-subset data, which could be implemented with sub-micrograms of DNA samples and vastly reduced sequencing analysis task, outperformed the usage of WGS data when LOH% was employed as stratifying criterion. CONCLUSIONS: Thus genomic subtyping performed with novel genomic markers identified in this study was effective in predicting patient-survival duration, with cohorts of hepatocellular carcinomas alone and those including intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas. Such relatively heterogeneity-insensitive genomic subtyping merits further studies with a broader spectrum of cancers.

Graphite-metal composites have been used as friction materials owing to their self-lubricity, which is ascribed to the weak interlayer bonding of graphite. To overcome the shortage of graphite flake (GrF)-filled composites of having low tribological properties, graphite-Cu composites with mesocarbon microbead (MCMB) as the solid lubricant are developed in this paper. The MCMB-Cu composites have a lower friction coefficient and wear rate than do the GrF-Cu composites taken as reference materials, exhibiting a better self-lubricating performance. Microstructural analysis indicates that the relatively weaker interlayer bonding of the MCMB, smooth interface between the MCMB and matrix, and more cementite formation thorough reaction of MCMB and iron are the key factors behind the enhanced tribological properties. In addition, both the friction coefficients and wear rates of the two groups of composites gradually decrease with the graphite content. This work opens an avenue for designing desirable graphite-based metal friction materials.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the overall diagnostic value of PET(CT) in patients with neuroblastoma (NB) based on qualified studies. METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase database were searched by the index words to identify the qualified studies, and relevant literature sources were also searched. The latest research was performed in April 2019. Heterogeneity of the included studies was tested, which was used to select proper effect model to calculate pooled weighted sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR). Summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) analyses were also performed. RESULTS: Eleven studies with 580 patients were involved in the meta-analysis to explore the diagnostic accuracy of PET(CT) for NB. PET(CT) has high diagnostic accuracy of NB: the global sensitivity was 91% (95% confidence interval [CI], 86%-94%), the global specificity was 78% (95% CI, 66%-86%), the global positive likelihood ratio was 4.07 (95% CI, 2.54-6.50), the global negative likelihood ratio was 0.12 (95% CI, 0.08-0.18), the global DOR was 27.43 (95% CI, 14.45-52.07), and the area under the SROC was high (area under the curve, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.90-0.95). Besides this, PET(CT) has high diagnostic accuracy of primary NB: the global sensitivity was 86% (95% CI, 73%-93%), the global specificity was 82% (95% CI, 57%-94%), the global positive likelihood ratio was 4.90 (95% CI, 1.63-14.72), the global negative likelihood ratio was 0.17 (95% CI, 0.07-0.40), the global DOR was 25.427 (95% CI, 3.988-162.098), and the area under the SROC was high (area under the curve, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.88-0.93). However, there has no significant accuracy of PET(CT) in NB with bone marrow. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of diagnostic accuracy studies of PET(CT) for NB. The results indicated that PET(CT) is a highly accurate diagnostic tool for NB.
