RESUMO

The detrimental effects of plastic and microplastic accumulation on ecosystems are widely recognized and indisputable. The emergence of biodegradable plastics (BPs) offers a practical solution to plastic pollution. Problematically, however, not all BPs can be fully degraded in the environment. On the contrary, the scientific community has demonstrated that BPs are more likely than conventional plastics (CPs) to degrade into micro/nanoplastics and release additives, which can have similar or even worse effects than microplastics. However, there is very limited information available on the environmental toxicity assessment of BMPs. The absence of a toxicity evaluation system and the uncertainty regarding combined toxicity with other pollutants also impede the environmental toxicity assessment of BMPs. Currently, research is focused on thoroughly exploring the toxic effects of biodegradable microplastics (BMPs). This paper reviews the pollution status of BMPs in the environment, the degradation behavior of BPs and the influencing factors. This paper comprehensively summarizes the ecotoxicological effects of BPs on ecosystems, considering animals, plants, and microorganisms in various environments such as water bodies, soil, and sediment. The focus is on distinguishing between BMPs and conventional microplastics (CMPs). In addition, the combined toxic effects of BMPs and other pollutants are also being investigated. The findings suggest that BMPs may have different or more severe impacts on ecosystems. The rougher and more intricate surface of BMPs increases the likelihood of causing mechanical damage to organisms and breaking down into smaller plastic particles, releasing additives that lead to a series of cascading negative effects on related organisms and ecosystems. In the case of knowledge gaps, future research is also proposed and anticipated to investigate the toxic effects of BMPs and their evaluation.

Dynamic manipulation of electromagnetic (EM) waves with multiple degrees of freedom plays an essential role in enhancing information processing. Currently, an enormous challenge is to realize directional terahertz (THz) holography. Recently, it was demonstrated that Janus metasurfaces could produce distinct responses to EM waves from two opposite incident directions, making multiplexed dynamic manipulation of THz waves possible. Herein, we show that thermally activated THz Janus metasurfaces integrating with phase change materials on the meta-atoms can produce asymmetric transmission with the designed phase delays. Such reconfigurable Janus metasurfaces can achieve asymmetric focusing of THz wave and directional THz holography with free-space image projections, and particularly the information can be manipulated via temperature and incident THz wave direction. This work not only offers a common strategy for realizing the reconfigurability of Janus metasurfaces, but also shows possible applications in THz optical information encryption, data storage, and smart windows.

Optical antireflection has been employed for a variety of applications in terahertz spectroscopy and detectors. However, current methods encounter challenges in terms of cost, bandwidth, structural complexity, and performance. In this study, a low-cost, broadband, and easily processed THz antireflection coating scheme based on the model of impedance-matching effect is proposed, using a 6 wt % d-sorbitol-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (s-PEDOT:PSS) film. By adjusting the thickness of the s-PEDOT:PSS film, these biocompatible conductive polymers enable a significant reduction of Fresnel reflection and operate over a broad bandwidth between 0.2 and 2.2 THz. Applying the antireflective coating to the surface of the sample substrate and electro-optic probe crystal in THz spectroscopy and near-field imaging shows that the spectral resolution is significantly improved, and the devices exhibit more excellent intended performance. The findings of this study could aid in improving the measurement capability of various THz time-domain spectroscopy and imaging system.

Density functional theory (DFT)-1/2 is an efficient bandgap rectification method for DFT under local density approximation (LDA) or generalized gradient approximation. It was suggested that non-self-consistent DFT-1/2 should be used for highly ionic insulators like LiF, whereas self-consistent DFT-1/2 should still be used for other compounds. Nevertheless, there is no quantitative criterion prescribed for which implementation should work for an arbitrary insulator, which leads to severe ambiguity in this method. In this work, we analyze the impact of self-consistency in DFT-1/2 and shell DFT-1/2 calculations in insulators or semiconductors with ionic bonds, covalent bonds, and intermediate cases and show that self-consistency is required even for highly ionic insulators for globally better electronic structure details. The self-energy correction renders electrons more localized around the anions in self-consistent LDA-1/2. The well-known delocalization error of LDA is rectified, but with strong overcorrection, due to the presence of additional self-energy potential. However, in non-self-consistent LDA-1/2 calculations, the electron wave functions indicate that such localization is much more severe and beyond a reasonable range because the strong Coulomb repulsion is not counted in the Hamiltonian. Another common drawback of non-self-consistent LDA-1/2 is that the ionicity of the bonding gets substantially enhanced, and the bandgap can be enormously high in mixed ionic-covalent compounds like TiO2.

It is known that the Kohn-Sham eigenvalues do not characterize experimental excitation energies directly, and the band gap of a semiconductor is typically underestimated by local density approximation (LDA) of density functional theory (DFT). An embarrassing situation is that one usually uses LDA+Ufor strongly correlated materials with rectified band gaps, but for non-strongly-correlated semiconductors one has to resort to expensive methods like hybrid functionals orGW. In spite of the state-of-the-art meta-generalized gradient approximation functionals like TB-mBJ and SCAN, methods with LDA-level complexity to rectify the semiconductor band gaps are in high demand. DFT-1/2 stands as a feasible approach and has been more widely used in recent years. In this work we give a detailed derivation of the Slater half occupation technique, and review the assumptions made by DFT-1/2 in semiconductor band structure calculations. In particular, the self-energy potential approach is verified through mathematical derivations. The aims, features and principles of shell DFT-1/2 for covalent semiconductors are also accounted for in great detail. Other developments of DFT-1/2 including conduction band correction, DFT+A-1/2, empirical formula for the self-energy potential cutoff radius, etc, are further reviewed. The relations of DFT-1/2 to hybrid functional, sX-LDA,GW, self-interaction correction, scissor's operator as well as DFT+Uare explained. Applications, issues and limitations of DFT-1/2 are comprehensively included in this review.

We demonstrate a high-efficiency visualized terahertz (THz) power meter based on the THz-photothermochromism of capsulized cholesteric liquid crystals (CCLCs) embedded in three-dimensional porous graphene (3DPG). The graphene is a broadband perfect absorber for THz radiation and transfers heat efficiently, and its black background is beneficial for color measurement. Quantitative visualization of THz intensity up to 2.8×102mW/cm2 is presented. The minimal detectable THz power is 0.009 mW. With multi-microcapsule analysis, the relationship between THz power and the average hue value of CCLCs achieves linearity. The device can convert THz radiation to visible light and is lightweight, cheap, and easy to use.

The conductivity of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene)/poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) is significantly enhanced on adding some organic solvent such as ethylene glycol (EG). In this paper, the optoelectronic properties of EG doped PEDOT/PSS on transmission and anti-reflection effects are investigated in detail by terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). The transmission line circuit theory gives us an insight into the THz transmission mechanisms of the main and second pulses. In particular, we show that the conductivities of 10% EG doped PEDOT/PSS are nearly frequency independent from 0.3 to 1.5 THz. To demonstrate applications of this property, we design and fabricate broadband terahertz neutral density filters and anti-reflection coatings based on 10% EG doped PEDOT/PSS thin films with varying thickness. Our measurements highlight the capability of THz-TDS to characterize the conductivity of EG doped PEDOT/PSS, which is essential for broadband optoelectronic devices in THz region.

Two new mexicanolides, named xylomexicanolides A and B, were isolated from the seeds of an Indian mangrove, Xylocarpus moluccensis, together with four known limonoids, khayasin, angolensic acid methyl ester, khayasin T, and 2'S-methylbutanoylproceranolide. The structures of these limonoids were established on the basis of spectroscopic data. The (13)C-NMR data of khayasin were reported for the first time. Khayasin was found to exhibit marked insecticidal activity against the fifth instar larvae of Brontispa longissima (GESTRO) at a concentration of 10 mg/l.

Six new phragmalins, moluccensins H-M (1-6), two new andirobin-type limonoids, moluccensins N and O (7, 8), and two new tirucallane derivatives, moluccensins P and Q (9, 10), were isolated from seeds of an Indian mangrove, Xylocarpus moluccensis, together with the known compound 3beta,22S-dihydroxytirucalla-7,24-dien-23-one. The structures of these compounds were established on the basis of spectroscopic data. Moluccensins H-L were phragmalins with a C-30 carbonyl group, and moluccensin M was a unique ring-D-opened 16-norphragmalin. Moluccensins H-J possess conjugated Delta(8,9) and Delta(14,15) double bonds, moluccensins K and L contain a Delta(8,14) double bond, and moluccensin M has a characteristic C(15)-C(30) linked five-membered lactone ring. Moluccensins H and I showed moderate insecticidal activity against the fifth instar larvae of Brontispa longissima (Gestro) at a concentration of 100 mg/L.

Seven new phragmalins with a C-30 carbonyl moiety, named moluccensins A-G (1-7), among which moluccensins A-F, possessing a Delta(8,14) double bond, and moluccensin G (7), containing conjugated Delta(8,9) and Delta(14,15) double bonds, were isolated from the seeds of an Indian mangrove, Xylocarpus moluccensis. The structures of these compounds were established on the basis of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and spectroscopic data. This is the first report of phragmalins with a conjugated C-30 carbonyl group.
