Currently, few studies have demonstrated the relationship between total serum IgE (T-IgE) and acute exacerbation chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). In this study, T-IgE in AECOPD patients were investigated and jointly analyzed with the clinical characteristics. AECOPD patients hospitalized from July 2018 to July 2019 were included in this study. In this patient cohort, clinical information was investigated. Routine blood tests, C-reactive protein and T-IgE levels of patients were determined along with blood gas analysis. The length of hospital stays, mechanical ventilation during hospitalization, ICU admission, glucocorticoid related clinical information were recorded. A total of 285 AECOPD patients were included in this study, which consisted of a high proportion of males. Of all patients, 49.82% patients exhibited higher T-IgE levels. Based on the reference T-IgE value 60 kU/L, patients were divided into high T-IgE group with T-IgE > 60 kU/L, and low T-IgE group with T-IgE ≤ 60 kU/L. There was no significant difference in the dosage of glucocorticoid between the two groups. Patients in the high T-IgE group had shorter hospital stays and lower probability of mechanical ventilation compared to the low T-IgE group. After adjustment for confounding factors, T-IgE was negatively correlated with the length of hospital stays. AECOPD patients with elevated T-IgE had shorter hospital stays and lower risks of mechanical ventilation and ICU admission. Our results showed that T-IgE might play an important role on evaluating the condition and guiding for treatment decisions in AECOPD patients.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a major cause of gastric diseases. Currently, bismuth-based quadruple therapy is widely adopted for eradicating H. pylori infection. However, this first-line strategy faces several challenges such as drug resistance, intestinal dysbacteriosis, and patients' poor compliance. To overcome these problems, an all-in-one therapeutic platform (CLA-Bi-ZnO2@Lipo) that composed of liposomes loading clarithromycin (CLA), Bi, and ZnO2 hybrid nanoparticles was developed for eradicating multidrug-resistant (MDR) H. pylori. The in vitro and in vivo results showed that CLA-Bi-ZnO2@Lipo could target the infection-induced inflammatory mucosa through liposome mediated nanoparticle-tissue surface charge interaction and quickly respond to the gastric acid environment to release CLA, Bi3+, Zn2+, and H2O2. By oral administration per day, the acid triggered decomposition of CLA-Bi-ZnO2@Lipo could significantly increase intragastric pH to 6 within 30 min; The released CLA, Zn2+, and H2O2 further exerted synergistical anti-bacterial effects in which a ∼2 order higher efficacy in reducing MDR H. pylori burden was achieved in comparison with standard quadruple therapy (p < 0.05); The released Zn2+ and Bi3+ could also alleviate mucosal inflammation. Most importantly, the CLA-Bi-ZnO2@Lipo exhibited superior biosafety and nearly no side effects on intestinal flora. Overall, this study developed a highly integrated and safe anti-MDR H. pylori agent which had great potential to be used as an alternative treatment for MDR H. pylori eradication.

BACKGROUND: Camellia sasanqua Thunb. is an essential woody ornamental plant. Our continuous observation found that scale insects often infest C. sasanqua all year round in Kunming, China, resulting in poor growth. Scientifically preventing and controlling the infestation of scale insects should be paid attention to, and the mechanism of scale insects influencing C. sasanqua should be used as the research basis. RESULTS: The scale insect was identified as Pseudaulacaspis sasakawai Takagi. We analyzed transcriptome sequencing data from leaves of C. sasanqua infested with scale insects. A total of 1320 genes were either up-regulated or down-regulated and differed significantly in response to scale insects. GO (Gene Ontology) annotation analysis showed that the pathway of catalytic activity, binding, membrane part, cell part, and cellular process were affected. KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) pathway analysis showed that most DEGs (differentially expressed genes) involved in plant hormone signal transduction, MAPK signaling pathway, flavonoid biosynthesis, tropane, piperidine and pyridine alkaloid biosynthesis. We also observed that the expression of galactose metabolism and carotenoid biosynthesis were significantly influenced. In addition, qRT-PCR (quantitative real-time PCR) validated the expression patterns of DEGs, which showed an excellent agreement with the transcriptome sequencing. CONCLUSIONS: Our transcriptomic analysis revealed that the C. sasanqua had an intricate resistance strategy to cope with scale insect attacks. After sensing the attack signal of scale insects, C. sasanqua activated the early signal MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) to activate further transcription factors and Auxin, ET, JA, ABA, and other plant hormone signaling pathways, ultimately leading to the accumulation of lignin, scopolin, flavonoids and other secondary metabolites, produces direct and indirect resistance to scale insects. Our results suggested that it provided some potential resources of defense genes that would benefit the following resistance breeding in C. sasanqua to scale insects.

Anatomical consistency in biomarker segmentation is crucial for many medical image analysis tasks. A promising paradigm for achieving anatomically consistent segmentation via deep networks is incorporating pixel connectivity, a basic concept in digital topology, to model inter-pixel relationships. However, previous works on connectivity modeling have ignored the rich channel-wise directional information in the latent space. In this work, we demonstrate that effective disentanglement of directional sub-space from the shared latent space can significantly enhance the feature representation in the connectivity-based network. To this end, we propose a directional connectivity modeling scheme for segmentation that decouples, tracks, and utilizes the directional information across the network. Experiments on various public medical image segmentation benchmarks show the effectiveness of our model as compared to the state-of-the-art methods. OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have shown that the COVID-19 lockdown contributes to the psychological and physical stress of college students, who are forced to adjust to this tough time. The objective of this study was to explore how positive coping behaviors and fear of COVID-19 predicted posttraumatic growth (PTG) among Chinese college students in Wuhan during the latest lockdown. METHOD: Chinese college students in Wuhan (N = 982) aged 18-30 were recruited and completed an online survey, which assessed the fear of COVID-19, positive coping, reflective rumination, and PTG. RESULTS: Chinese college students reported high levels of PTG at the total scale (79.4%) and subdomains (83.7%). Fear of COVID-19 can not only directly influence PTG, but can also indirectly affect PTG through the mediating role of positive coping. Additionally, reflective rumination moderates the association between fear of COVID-19 and positive coping, whereby fear of COVID-19 promotes positive coping in college students with a higher level of reflective rumination. CONCLUSION: PTG in college students is the result of both positive behavior and reflective cognition during the COVID-19 pandemic in China. Therefore, in order to promote students' positive psychological changes, students should be encouraged to interpret situations positively and take proactive responses. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease complicated with pulmonary hypertension (COPD + PH). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed clinical data from 242 COPD patients at our hospital from July 2018 to July 2019. Patients underwent examinations including blood analysis, C-reactive protein, N-terminal brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), pulmonary function, and cardiac color ultrasound. RESULTS: Patients were divided into the COPD and COPD + PH groups using pulmonary arterial pressure (<50 and ≥50 mmHg, respectively). Compared with the COPD group, the COPD + PH group had greater pulmonary arterial pressure, smoking history, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), C-reactive protein, BNP, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Assessment Test score, and right atrium and ventricular diameters, but smaller body mass index, forced vital capacity, lymphocyte count, and left ventricular diameter. BNP and NLR had positive effects on PH; forced vital capacity had a negative impact. Moreover, BNP (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.748, sensitivity = 0.692, specificity = 0.701) and NLR (AUC = 0.679, sensitivity = 0.831, specificity = 0.452) had predictive value for PH, and both were positively correlated with PH. CONCLUSIONS: NLR is associated with COPD + PH, and may be useful for its diagnosis.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) helps ophthalmologists assess macular edema, accumulation of fluids, and lesions at microscopic resolution. Quantification of retinal fluids is necessary for OCT-guided treatment management, which relies on a precise image segmentation step. As manual analysis of retinal fluids is a time-consuming, subjective, and error-prone task, there is increasing demand for fast and robust automatic solutions. In this study, a new convolutional neural architecture named RetiFluidNet is proposed for multi-class retinal fluid segmentation. The model benefits from hierarchical representation learning of textural, contextual, and edge features using a new self-adaptive dual-attention (SDA) module, multiple self-adaptive attention-based skip connections (SASC), and a novel multi-scale deep self-supervision learning (DSL) scheme. The attention mechanism in the proposed SDA module enables the model to automatically extract deformation-aware representations at different levels, and the introduced SASC paths further consider spatial-channel interdependencies for concatenation of counterpart encoder and decoder units, which improve representational capability. RetiFluidNet is also optimized using a joint loss function comprising a weighted version of dice overlap and edge-preserved connectivity-based losses, where several hierarchical stages of multi-scale local losses are integrated into the optimization process. The model is validated based on three publicly available datasets: RETOUCH, OPTIMA, and DUKE, with comparisons against several baselines. Experimental results on the datasets prove the effectiveness of the proposed model in retinal OCT fluid segmentation and reveal that the suggested method is more effective than existing state-of-the-art fluid segmentation algorithms in adapting to retinal OCT scans recorded by various image scanning instruments.

Objectives: After a long-term lockdown, particularly one in which human life is at risk, negative psychological consequences are expected. In this study, we aimed to explore the cause of stress and fear of coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) among Chinese college students in Wuhan during the latest strictest lockdown. Methods: During the COVID-19 outbreak, 1,070 college students from Wuhan, aged 18-29 years, took part in an online survey. We used correlations, bootstrap tests, and other statistical analysis methods to analyze the data. Results: Negative coping style significantly positively predicted fear of COVID-19, and stress had a significant mediating effect on the relationship between negative coping style and fear of COVID-19. In addition, rumination and stress had a chain-mediating effect on the relationship between negative coping style and fear of COVID-19. Perceived social support moderated the three paths of this serial mediation model. Conclusion: Negative emotions, such as stress and fear of COVID-19, in college students are caused by both behavior (e.g., negative coping style) and cognition (e.g., rumination). Importantly, negative cognitive thinking (i.e., rumination) is often a malign consequence of a negative coping style. Thus, to improve students' mental health, students should be encouraged to engage in more positive behaviors and seek social support during periods of adherence to regular prevention and control measures.

Mitochondria are essential organelles for neuronal function and cell survival. Besides the well-known bioenergetics, additional mitochondrial roles in calcium signaling, lipid biogenesis, regulation of reactive oxygen species, and apoptosis are pivotal in diverse cellular processes. The mitochondrial proteome encompasses about 1,500 proteins encoded by both the nuclear DNA and the maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA. Mutations in the nuclear or mitochondrial genome, or combinations of both, can result in mitochondrial protein deficiencies and mitochondrial malfunction. Therefore, mitochondrial quality control by proteins involved in various surveillance mechanisms is critical for neuronal integrity and viability. Abnormal proteins involved in mitochondrial bioenergetics, dynamics, mitophagy, import machinery, ion channels, and mitochondrial DNA maintenance have been linked to the pathogenesis of a number of neurological diseases. The goal of this review is to give an overview of these pathways and to summarize the interconnections between mitochondrial protein dysfunction and neurological diseases.

Salient object detection (SOD) is viewed as a pixel-wise saliency modeling task by traditional deep learning-based methods. A limitation of current SOD models is insufficient utilization of inter-pixel information, which usually results in imperfect segmentation near edge regions and low spatial coherence. As we demonstrate, using a saliency mask as the only label is suboptimal. To address this limitation, we propose a connectivity-based approach called bilateral connectivity network (BiconNet), which uses connectivity masks together with saliency masks as labels for effective modeling of inter-pixel relationships and object saliency. Moreover, we propose a bilateral voting module to enhance the output connectivity map, and a novel edge feature enhancement method that efficiently utilizes edge-specific features. Through comprehensive experiments on five benchmark datasets, we demonstrate that our proposed method can be plugged into any existing state-of-the-art saliency-based SOD framework to improve its performance with negligible parameter increase.

Objectives: The 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) epidemic has led to persistent negative psychological effects on the general public, especially on college students, who are highly susceptible to psychological difficulties, such as fear, anxiety, and depression. Little information is known about depressive symptoms among college students during the normalization stage of COVID-19 prevention and control in China. This study aimed to understand the prevalence of and factors associated with depressive symptoms after a long quarantine time and online learning at home among college students in Wuhan, China. Materials and Methods: A web-based survey was conducted from July to August 2020 during the Chinese summer holiday to collect data on sociodemographic variables, depressive symptoms, and their potential associated factors using an electronic questionnaire among college students in Wuhan, China. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was used to measure depressive symptoms. Binary logistic regression was used to explore the factors associated with depressive symptoms. Results: A total of 9,383 college students were included in the analysis. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 15.8% (1,486/9,383) among college students. The binary logistic regression showed that the experience of being quarantined for observation or treatment, family members or friends dying of COVID-19, rarely or never seeking help from others, fewer supportive relatives or friends, less support from family in the past month, a worse relationship with parents at home, a longer time spent daily on electronic devices except for online learning, and feeling anxious in the face of returning to school were independently associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms. Academic stress and concern about the epidemic were the main reasons for their anxiety. Conclusions: Targeted psychological intervention measures are recommended for college students to improve their mental health during the normalization stage of COVID-19 prevention and control.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is used for diagnosis of esophageal diseases such as Barrett's esophagus. Given the large volume of OCT data acquired, automated analysis is needed. Here we propose a bilateral connectivity-based neural network for in vivo human esophageal OCT layer segmentation. Our method, connectivity-based CE-Net (Bicon-CE), defines layer segmentation as a combination of pixel connectivity modeling and pixel-wise tissue classification. Bicon-CE outperformed other widely used neural networks and reduced common topological prediction issues in tissues from healthy patients and from patients with Barrett's esophagus. This is the first end-to-end learning method developed for automatic segmentation of the epithelium in in vivo human esophageal OCT images.

Mitochondria are key regulators of many important cellular processes and their dysfunction has been implicated in a large number of human disorders. Importantly, mitochondrial function is tightly linked to their ultrastructure, which possesses an intricate membrane architecture defining specific submitochondrial compartments. In particular, the mitochondrial inner membrane is highly folded into membrane invaginations that are essential for oxidative phosphorylation. Furthermore, mitochondrial membranes are highly dynamic and undergo constant membrane remodeling during mitochondrial fusion and fission. It has remained enigmatic how these membrane curvatures are generated and maintained, and specific factors involved in these processes are largely unknown. This review focuses on the current understanding of the molecular mechanism of mitochondrial membrane architectural organization and factors critical for mitochondrial morphogenesis, as well as their functional link to human diseases.

To study the relationship between neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and exercise tolerance of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).235 patients with COPD were selected as the study subjects. Complete blood count, C reactive protein (CRP), pulmonary function tests, the 6-minute walk distance (6MWD), Modified Medical Respiratory Council, the COPD assessment test, and clinical COPD questionnaire were tested. Heart rate, oxygen saturation, and Borg scale were tested before or after 6MWD test.By the median of NLR, the subjects were divided into 2 groups, NLR ≥4.5 group and NLR <4.5 group. The white blood cell count (WBC), CRP and deoxygenation saturation in the NLR ≥4.5 group were higher than those in the NLR <4.5 group, while the age, body mass index (BMI), 6MWD, and heart rate variation were lower than those in the NLR <4.5 group. CRP, WBC, and deoxygenation saturation had positive effects on NLR, BMI, 6MWT, and heart rate variation had negative effects on NLR. The Pearson correlation analysis showed NLR was positively correlated with WBC, CRP, BMI index, 6MWT, and deoxygenation saturation, while it was negatively correlated with BMI and heart rate variation.NLR might associate with exercise tolerance and cardiorespiratory reserve of COPD patients, and could be used as an indicator of muscle function in COPD patients.

We acquired depth-resolved light scattering measurements from the retinas of triple transgenic Alzheimer's Disease (3xTg-AD) mice and wild type (WT) age-matched controls using co-registered angle-resolved low-coherence interferometry (a/LCI) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Angle-resolved light scattering measurements were acquired from the nerve fiber layer, outer plexiform layer, and retinal pigmented epithelium using image guidance and segmented thicknesses provided by co-registered OCT B-scans. Analysis of the OCT images showed a statistically significant thinning of the nerve fiber layer in AD mouse retinas compared to WT controls. The a/LCI scattering measurements provided complementary information that distinguishes AD mice by quantitatively characterizing tissue heterogeneity. The AD mouse retinas demonstrated higher mean and variance in nerve fiber layer light scattering intensity compared to WT controls. Further, the difference in tissue heterogeneity was observed through short-range spatial correlations that show greater slopes at all layers of interest for AD mouse retinas compared to WT controls. A greater slope indicates a faster loss of spatial correlation, suggesting a loss of tissue self-similarity characteristic of heterogeneity consistent with AD pathology. Use of this combined modality introduces unique tissue texture characterization to complement development of future AD biomarker analysis.

Three lanthanide-based metal-organic frameworks, [Tb(HMDIA)(H2O)3]·H2O (Tb-MDIA), [Ho(HMDIA)(H2O)3]·(H2O)2 (Ho-MDIA), and [Nd(HMDIA)(H2O)3]·(H2O)2 (Nd-MDIA) from the same V-shaped ligand 5,5'-methylenediisophthalic acid (H4MDIA), were prepared by mixing Ln3+ and H4MDIA under solvothermal conditions. The crystal structures of the three complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The different coordination modes of the organic ligands resulted in different framework structures among the three complexes. The luminescent properties of Ln-MDIA in the ultraviolet-visible region were also studied. Interestingly, the bright-green emitter Tb-MDIA showed high selectivity and sensitivity to allow the naked-eye visualization of Fe3+ ions and picric acid (PA) explosive, and both sensing mechanisms were revealed. Finally, Ho-MDIA and Nd-MDIA were shown to work as heterogeneous catalysts for the cyanosilylation reaction of aromatic aldehydes, and the catalysts could be recycled at least three times without any decrease in activity.

Efficient oil separation is the most desirable, but still challenging solution for the waste crude oil problem. This study developed biosurfactant surfactin as a novel pH-switchable biodemulsifier for efficient oil separation. As found, surfactin demulsification achieved a quite well oil separation ratio of over 95% on model emulsions after 20 min at 50 °C. The validity of this demulsification process should be mainly based on the readily lost stabilization ability of surfactin in emulsions triggered by acid addition. Then, surfactin (0.2 g/L) treatment with the aid of ethanol (2%) to improve its distribution could recover over 95% of oil from waste crude oil. After treated by surfactin, the separated oil phase contains tiny water (less than 0.5%) and thus can be reused for resource recycling to reach a compromised balance between satisfying the strict environmental regulations and decreasing the high treatment costs. Hence, in consideration of high demulsification efficiency, environmental-friendly properties and cost-efficiency, surfactin has a great potential for industrial applications for oil recovery from waste crude oil which is a severe problem presents in most of the petroleum-related factories.

The aim of the study was to obtain the secondary metabolites in the stem segment of noni and to establish genetic transformation system. The stem segments (no axillary buds) of noni were used as explants to induce the callus, and then to establish the cell suspension system. The factors affecting callus induction and cell suspension were studied. The results showed that the optimal culture medium for induction was MS with 1.0 mg/L 6-Benzylaminopurine (6-BA) and 0.1 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), and the optimum culture medium for suspension was MS with 1.0 mg/L 6-BA and 0.1 mg/L 2,4-D, 3% sucrose and the pH of 5.85, with the initial inoculation amount of 37.5 g/L, and the speed of 110 r/min and 25±2 °C applying darkness culture. The suspension cells grew well and showed the maximum growth rate. The growth curve of the suspension cells from the stem segment of noni was in "S-typed" trend, and it should be transformed to the fresh medium between 12 and 20 d. During the culture, the pH of the culture medium decreased and then slowly increased, and the optimum pH for the suspension cells culture of callus from noni's stem segments was 4.5-5.0. In this study, the stable cell suspension system of the stem segment of noni was successfully established.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the impact of platelet count on the prognosis of stage II-III colorectal cancer receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. METHODS: Clinical and follow-up data of 286 patients with stage II-III colorectal cancer receiving adjuvant FOLFOX chemotherapy from March 2003 to October 2011 were analyzed retrospectively. Associations of baseline blood platelet count before chemotherapy and nadir blood platelet count during chemotherapy with relapse and death after adjuvant chemotherapy were analyzed by ROC curve and the optimal cutoff was selected. The association of the blood platelet count and the prognosis was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression model. RESULTS: ROC curve showed the baseline blood platelet count was associated with recurrence (AUC=0.588, P=0.034). The optimal cutoff affecting recurrence was 276×10(9)/L. Kaplan-Meier showed those with baseline platelet count >276×10(9)/L receiving adjuvant chemotherapy had worse disease free survival (DFS) than those with baseline platelet count ≤276×10(9)/L, whose 5-year disease free survival(DFS) was 66% and 80% respectively (P=0.013). Cox regression analysis revealed baseline platelet count >276×10(9)/L was an independent unfavorable factor for DFS of adjuvant chemotherapy in colorectal cancer (HR=1.865, 95% CI: 1.108-3.141, P=0.019). CONCLUSION: Colorectal cancer patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy with baseline platelet count >276×10(9)/L have worse prognosis.
