Systemic amyloid A (AA) amyloidosis, which is considered the second most common form of systemic amyloidosis usually takes place several years prior to the occurrence of chronic inflammation, generally involving the kidney. Activated HSF1, which alleviated unfolded protein response (UPR) or enhanced HSR, is the potential therapeutic target of many diseases. However, the effect of HSF1 on AA amyloidosis remains unclear. This study focused on evaluating effect of HSF1 on AA amyloidosis based on HSF1 knockout mice. As a result, aggravated amyloid deposits and renal dysfunction have been found in HSF1 knockout mice. In progressive AA amyloidosis, HSF1 deficiency enhances serum amyloid A production might to lead to severe AA amyloid deposition in mice, which may be related to deactivated unfolded protein response as well as enhanced inflammation. Thus, HSF1 plays a significant role on UPR related pathway impacting AA amyloid deposition, which can mitigate amyloidogenic proteins from aggregation pathologically and is the possible way for intervening with the pathology of systemic amyloid disorder. In conclusion, HSF1 could not only serve as a new target for AA amyloidosis treatment in the future, but HSF1 knockout mice also can be considered as a valuable novel animal model for renal AA amyloidosis.

High-temperature piezoelectric materials, which enable the accurate and reliable sensing of physical parameters to guarantee the functional operation of various systems under harsh conditions, are highly demanded. To this end, both large piezoelectricity and high Curie temperature are pivotal figures of merit (FOMs) for high-temperature piezoceramics. Unfortunately, despite intensive pursuits, it remains a formidable challenge to unravel the inverse correlation between these FOMs. Herein, a conceptual material paradigm of multiscale structural engineering was proposed to address this dilemma. The synergistic effects of phase structure reminiscent of a polymorphic phase boundary and refined domain morphology simultaneously contribute to a large piezoelectric coefficient d33 of 30.3 pC/N and a high Curie temperature TC of 740 °C in (LiCeNd) codoped Na0.5Bi2.5Nb2O9 (NBN-LCN) ceramics. More encouragingly, the system has exceptional thermal stability and is nonsusceptible to mechanical loading. This study not only demonstrates that the high-performance and robust NBN-LCN high-temperature piezoceramics hold great potential for implements under harsh conditions but also opens an avenue for integrating antagonistic properties for the enhancement of the collective performance in functional materials.

Two-dimensional (2D) Dion-Jacobson (DJ) perovskites typically outperform Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) analogs in terms of photodetection (PD). However, the mechanism behind this enhanced performance remains elusive. Theoretical calculations for elucidating interlayer spacer conformation-induced multiple hydrogen bonds in 2D perovskite are presented, along with the synthesis of DPAPbBr4 (DPB) single crystals (SCs) and their PD properties under X-ray/ultraviolet (UV) excitation. The high-quality DPB SC enhances PD with exceptional photoresponse attributes, including a high on/off ratio (4.89 × 104), high responsivity (2.44 A W⁻1), along with large dynamic linear range (154 dB) and low detection limit (7.1 nW cm⁻2), which are currently the best results among 2D perovskite SC detectors, respectively. Importantly, high-resolution images are obtained under UV illumination with weak light levels. The SC X-ray detector exhibits a high sensitivity of 663 µC Gyair⁻1 cm-2 at 10 V and a detection limit of 1.44 µGyair s⁻1. This study explores 2D DJ perovskites for efficient and innovative optoelectronic applications.

BACKGROUND: Necroptosis is an inflammatory cell death mode, and its association with multiple myeloma (MM) remains unclear. METHODS: This prospective study first analyzed the association between necroptosis-related signature as well as prognosis and chemotherapy sensitivity in MM using the necroptosis score. Consensus clustering was used to identify necroptosis-related molecular clusters. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator analysis and multivariate Cox regression analysis were performed to establish the prognostic model of necroptosis-related genes (NRGs). RESULTS: A high necroptosis score was associated with poor prognosis and abundant immune infiltration. Two molecular clusters (clusters A and B) significantly differed in terms of prognosis and tumor microenvironment. Cluster B had a worse prognosis and higher tumor marker pathway activity than cluster A. The risk score model based on four NRGs can accurately predict the prognosis of patients with MM, which was validated in two validation cohorts. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the area under the curves of the risk score in predicting the 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates were 0.710, 0.758, and 0.834, respectively. Further, the activity of pathways related to proliferation and genetic regulation in the high-risk group significantly increased. The drug prediction results showed that the low-risk score group was more sensitive to bortezomib, cytarabine, and doxorubicin than the high-risk score group. Meanwhile, the high-risk score group was more sensitive to lenalidomide and vinblastine than the low-risk score group. Finally, the upregulation of model genes CHMP1A, FAS, JAK3, and HSP90AA1 in clinical samples collected from patients with MM was validated via real-time polymerase chain reaction. CONCLUSION: A systematic analysis of NRGs can help identify potential necroptosis-related mechanisms and provide novel biomarkers for MM prognosis prediction, tumor microenvironment evaluation, and personalized treatment planning.

Amorphous potassium sodium niobate (KNN) films were synthesized at 300 °C through the radio frequency magnetron sputtering method and subsequently crystallized by post-annealing at 700 °C in various alkali element atmospheres (Na and K). The as-deposited film is notably deficient in alkali metal elements, particularly K, whereas the loss of alkali elements in the films can be replenished through annealing in an alkali element atmosphere. By adjusting the molar ratio of Na and K in the annealing atmosphere, the ratio of Na/K in the resultant film varied, consequently suggesting the efficiency of this method on composition regulation of KNN films. Meanwhile, we also found that the physical characteristics of the films also underwent differences with the change of an annealing atmosphere. The films annealed in a high Na atmosphere exhibit large dielectric losses with limited piezoelectric vibration behavior, while annealing in a high K atmosphere reduces the dielectric losses and enhances the piezoelectric behavior. Furthermore, the results of vibration measurement demonstrated that the film annealed in a mixed powder of 25% Na2CO3 and 75% K2CO3 exhibits an optimal vibration displacement of ~400 pm under the sinusoidal excitation voltage of 8 V. This approach of altering the composition of KNN films through post-annealing may introduce the new concept of property design of KNN as well as other similar films.

Halide perovskites have emerged as highly promising materials for ionizing radiation detection due to their exceptional characteristics, including a large mobility-lifetime product, strong stopping power, tunable band gap, and cost-effective crystal growth via solution processes. Semiconductor-type X-ray detectors employing various micro/nano perovskite materials have shown impressive progress in achieving heightened sensitivity and lower detection limits. Here, we present a comprehensive review of the applications of micro/nano perovskite materials for direct type X-ray detection, with a focus on the requirements for micro/nano crystal assembly and device properties in advanced X-ray detectors. We explore diverse processing techniques and optoelectronic considerations applied to perovskite X-ray detectors. Additionally, this review highlights the challenges and promising opportunities for perovskite X-ray detector arrays in real-world applications, potentially necessitating further research efforts.

BACKGROUND: Shenzhen is one of the most populated metropolises in southern China where thalassemia is highly prevalent. The prevention of thalassemia inheritance is an ambition of child-bearing couples. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 22,098 peripheral blood samples were collected from 11,049 potentially at-risk couples of childbearing age from Shenzhen. Thalassemia mutations were determined by PCR-based flow-through hybridization. The results identified 45.02% of the participants (9948 out of 22,098) as harboring globin gene mutations, distributed into 18 α-thalassemia alleles detected in 71.48% (7111 out of 9948) and 15 ß-thalassemia alleles detected in 32.68% (3252 out of 9948) of all mutant individuals, among which 415 individuals carried both α- and ß-thalassemia alleles. The most frequent phenotypes for α-globin variations were --SEA/αα (63.37%), -α3.7/αα (18.66%), and -α4.2/αα (7.31%), and those for ß-globin variations were ß41-42/ßN (34.96%), ß654/ßN (28.11%), and ß17/ßN (13.84%). A total of 970 high-risk couples who could possibly give birth to offspring with thalassemia intermedia or major were identified. In addition, the hematological indices were compared among thalassemia genotypes. Significant differences in MCH, MCV, Hb A, and Hb A2 levels among α-thalassemia minor (α+), trait (α0), and intermediate phenotypes (P < 0.05) and between ßE/ßN and the other ß-thalassemia phenotypes (P < 0.05) were found. Moreover, GAP-PCR and next-generation sequencing further identified 42 rare mutations, 13 of which were first reported in the Chinese population. A novel mutation in the ß-globin gene (HBB: c.246 C > A (rs145669504)) was also discovered. CONCLUSIONS: This study presented a comprehensive analysis of thalassemia variations in a population from Shenzhen and may offer valuable insights for thalassemia control and intervention strategies in this area.

Low-bandgap (LBG, Eg  ≈1.25 eV) tin-lead (Sn-Pb) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) play critical roles in constructing efficient all-perovskite tandem solar cells (TSCs) that can surpass the efficiency limit of single-junction solar cells. However, the traditional poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hole transport layer (HTL) in LBG PSCs usually restricts device efficiency and stability. Here, a strategy of employing 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid (i.e., taurine) as the interface bridge to fabricate efficient HTL-free LBG PSCs with improved optoelectronic properties of the perovskite absorbers at the buried contacts is reported. Taurine-modified ITO substrate has lower optical losses, better energy level alignment, and higher charge transfer capability than PEDOT:PSS HTL, leading to significantly improved open-circuit voltage (VOC ) and short-circuit current density of corresponding devices. The best-performing LBG PSC with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.50% and an impressive VOC of 0.911 V is realized, enabling all-perovskite TSCs with an efficiency of 26.03%. The taurine-based HTL-free TSCs have highly increased stability, retaining more than 90% and 80% of their initial PCEs after constant operation under 1-sun illumination for 600 h and under 55 °C thermal stress for 950 h, respectively. This work provides a facile strategy for fabricating efficient and stable perovskite devices with a simplified HTL-free architecture.

OBJECTIVE: Our study aims to examine the associations of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) with subclinical cardiac dysfunction in a Chinese population. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. BACKGROUND: EAT and VAT are the most important ectopic fat pools which were previously shown to be associated with subclinical cardiac dysfunction. However, few studies simultaneously measured both EAT thickness and VAT area, and explored their associations with cardiac dysfunction. Our study aims to examine the associations of VAT and EAT with subclinical cardiac dysfunction in a Chinese population. METHODS: The study subjects were recruited from Danyang County from 2018 to 2019. Using Philips CX50, we recorded EAT thickness at the end-systole in a long-axis view. The subclinical systolic and diastolic function were assessed by two-dimensional speckle tracking, and transmitral and tissue Doppler imaging, respectively. Using Omron HDS-2000, we measured VAT area by dual bioelectrical impedance analysis. RESULTS: The 1558 participants (age, 52.3±12.8 years) included 930 (59.7%) women. Compared with women, men had higher VAT area (99.4 vs 70.1 cm2; p<0.0001) but lower EAT thickness (4.02 vs 4.46 mm; p<0.0001). In simple correlation analyses, EAT thickness and VAT area were positively associated with E/e' ratio (r=0.16 to 0.20; all p<0.0001) and negatively with global longitudinal strain (GLS) and e' (r=-0.12 to -0.37; all p<0.0001). Furthermore, VAT area was associated with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (r=-0.14; p<0.0001). After adjustment for confounding factors, the association of EAT with GLS and that of VAT with e' and E/e' ratio remained significant (all p≤0.001), whereas the associations of EAT with subclinical diastolic dysfunction and that of VAT with systolic function became non-significant (all p≥0.11). Analyses on further adjustment for LVEF showed similar results. CONCLUSIONS: Increased EAT thickness was associated with worse subclinical systolic dysfunction, while greater VAT area was associated with early diastolic dysfunction.

Background: Disulfidptosis is a metabolically relevant mode of cell death, and its relationship with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has not been clarified. In this study, disulfidptosis scores were computed to examine the potential biological mechanisms. Methods: Consensus clustering was applied to detect disulfidptosis-related molecular subtypes. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis was used to construct a DRG prognostic model. Results: DRGs are upregulated in AML and associated with poor prognosis. The higher the disulfidptosis activity score, the worse the clinical outcome for patients, accompanied by increased immune checkpoint expression and tumor marker pathway activity. The two molecular subtypes exhibited distinct prognoses and tumor microenvironment (TME) profiles. A prognostic risk score model was established using six DRGs, and the AML cohort was divided into high- and low-risk score groups. Patients in the high-risk group experienced significantly worse prognosis, which was validated in seven AML cohorts. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis indicated that the area under the curve values for risk score prediction of 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival were 0.779, 0.714, and 0.778, respectively. The nomogram, in conjunction with clinicopathological factors, further improved the accuracy of prognosis prediction. The high-risk score group exhibited a higher somatic mutation frequency, increased immune-related signaling pathway activity, and greater immune checkpoint expression, suggesting a certain degree of immunosuppression. Patients with advanced age and higher cytogenetic risk also had elevated risk scores. According to drug prediction and AML anti-PD-1 therapy cohort analysis, the low-risk score group displayed greater sensitivity to chemotherapy drugs like cytarabine and midostaurin, while the high-risk score group was more responsive to anti-PD-1 therapy. Finally, clinical samples were collected for sequencing analysis, confirming that the progression of myeloid leukemia was associated with a higher risk score and a negative disulfidptosis score, suggesting that the poor prognosis of AML may be associated with disulfidptosis resistance. Conclusion: In conclusion, a systematic analysis of DRGs can help to identify potential disulfidptosis-related mechanisms and provide effective new biomarkers for prognosis prediction, TME assessment, and the establishment of personalized treatment plans in AML.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical phenotypes, genetic characteristics, and pathological features of children with disorders of sex development (DSD). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on epidemiological, clinical phenotype, chromosomal karyotype, gonadal pathology, and genotype data of 165 hospitalized children with DSD at Children's Hospital of Hebei Province and Tangshan Maternal and Child Health Hospital from August 2008 to December 2022. RESULTS: Among the 165 children with DSD, common presenting symptoms were short stature (62/165, 37.6%), clitoromegaly (33/165, 20.0%), cryptorchidism (28/165, 17.0%), hypospadias (24/165, 14.5%), and skin pigmentation abnormalities/exteriorized pigmented labia majora (19/165, 11.5%). Chromosomal karyotype analysis was performed on 127 cases, revealing 36 cases (28.3%) of 46,XX DSD, 34 cases (26.8%) of 46,XY DSD, and 57 cases (44.9%) of sex chromosome abnormalities. Among the sex chromosome abnormal karyotypes, the 45,X karyotype (11/57, 19%) and 45,X/other karyotype mosaicism (36/57, 63%) were more common. Sixteen children underwent histopathological biopsy of gonadal tissues, resulting in retrieval of 25 gonadal tissues. The gonadal tissue biopsies revealed 3 cases of testes, 3 cases of dysplastic testes, 6 cases of ovaries, 11 cases of ovotestes, and 1 case each of streak gonad and agenesis of gonads. Genetic testing identified pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants in 23 cases (23/36, 64%), including 12 cases of 21-hydroxylase deficiency congenital adrenal hyperplasia caused by CYP21A2 pathogenic variants. CONCLUSIONS: Short stature, clitoromegaly, cryptorchidism, hypospadias, and skin pigmentation abnormalities are common phenotypes in children with DSD. 45,X/other karyotype mosaicism and CYP21A2 compound heterozygous variants are major etiological factors in children with DSD. The most commonly observed gonadal histopathology in children with DSD includes ovotestes, ovaries, and testes/dysgenetic testes.

The Miyun Reservoir is the major source of surface drinking water in Beijing. However, the total nitrogen (TN) concentrations in the Miyun Reservoir and inflowing rivers have recently been increasing. In this study, the Mangniu River, a typical inflow river in the upper reaches of the Miyun Reservoir, was selected as the study area to investigate the spatial distribution and transformation of various nitrogen forms from the perspective of microbial community composition and predicting function, aimimg at providing a scientific reference for nitrogen pollution control of the Miyun Reservoir. The results indicated that except for TN, all the other physical and chemical water quality indicators in the upper reaches of the Miyun Reservoir met the Class II criteria of the environmental quality standards for surface water in China (GB 3838-2002). Additionally, NO3--N was the primary constituent of TN, ranging from 77.7% to 92.9%. Banchengzi Reservoir has a certain self-purification ability because its high C/N ratio promotes denitrification. Significant differences in microbial community structure were observed between the water and sediments of Mangniu River along with spatial distribution. High NO3--N concentration was the major environmental factor affecting the succession of microbial community structure. Many nitrification and denitrification microorganisms existed in Mengniu River, and the relative abundance of denitrification bacteria (DNB) was higher than that of nitrification bacteria, and that in the sediments was slightly higher than that in the water. Nitrosopumilus and Pseudomonas were the dominant nitrification and denitrification bacteria in Mengniuhe River, respectively. The results of phylogenetic investigation of communities by the reconstruction of unobserved states (PICRUSt2) showed that NO3--N reduction module was the major nitrogen metabolism module, which primarily occurred in water. The abundance of the functional genes for nitrification (i.e., narGH) was the highest in water, and the major functional gene involved in NO3--N reduction was nirBD of DNRA, which was primarily present in the sediments; however, the main functional gene involved in denitrification was nirK.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to arsenic (As) is a major public health challenge worldwide. Chronic exposure to As can cause various human health effects, including skin diseases, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, and cancer. Studies have shown that As exposure can lead to disturbances in the balance of trace elements in the body. Moreover, As readily crosses the blood-brain barrier and can be enriched in the hippocampus and cortex, causing neurotoxic damage. At present, there are few reports on the effect of As on trace element levels in the central nervous system (CNS). Therefore, we sought to explore As-induced neurotoxicity and the effects of As on CNS trace element levels. METHODS: An As-induced neurological injury model in rats was established by feeding As chow for 90 days of continuous exposure, and 19 elements were detected in the hippocampus and cortex of As-exposed rats by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. RESULTS: The results showed that the As levels in the hippocampus and cortex of As-exposed rats were significantly higher than those in the control group, The As levels in the cortex were significantly higher than in the hippocampus group. The levels of Cd, Ho, and Rb were increased in the hippocampus and decreased in Au, Ba, Ce, Cs, Pd, Se, Sr, and Tl in the As-exposed group, while the levels of Cd and Rb were increased and Se and Au were decreased in the cortex. Significant gender differences in the effects of As on hippocampal Cd, Ba, Rb, and Sr, and cortical Cd and Mo. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that elemental imbalance may be a risk factor for developing As toxicity plays a synergistic or antagonistic role in As-induced toxicity and is closely related to As-induced CNS damage.

The American Musculoskeletal Society updated the diagnostic criteria for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) in 2011 and 2018. However, the overall incidence of PJI since the introduction of these new standards has not been assessed. In order to fill this knowledge gap, a single-group meta-analysis was conducted using articles obtained from several databases, focusing on the incidence of PJI after primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). Our study revealed a significant difference in the incidence of PJI reported by different national or regional databases. Moreover, most cases of PJI were found to be underestimated. This highlights the crucial need for standardized diagnostic criteria and monitoring methods to accurately identify and track cases of PJI. Furthermore, a bibliometric analysis was conducted to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of research on PJI after THA. This analysis explored the most productive countries, organizations, journals, and individuals in this research area. Additionally, it identified the research trends and hotspots of the last decade, highlighting the advancements and areas of focus in this field. By conducting these analyses, the study aims to contribute to the understanding of PJI after THA and provide valuable insights for clinicians, researchers, and policymakers involved in the management of this condition.

Background: Mushrooms are considered as next-generation healthy food components. Owing to their low-fat content, high-quality proteins, dietary fiber, and rich source of nutraceuticals. They are ideally preferred in formulation of low-caloric functional foods. In this view, the breeding strategies of mushroom Auricularia cornea (A. cornea) focusing on high yield and higher quality with rich nutritional values and health benefits are still needed. Materials and methods: A total of 50 strains of A. cornea were used to analyze the bio efficiency and the time required for fruiting body formation following the cultivation experiment. The calorimetric method was used to evaluate the antioxidant activity and quantify the crude polysaccharides and minerals content thereafter. Results: The results showed that the time required for fruiting body formation and biological efficiency varied significantly among the selected strains. Noticeably, the wild domesticated strain Ac13 of A. cornea mushroom showed the shortest fruit development time (80 days). Similarly, the hybrid strains including Ac3 and Ac15 possessed the highest biological efficiency (82.40 and 94.84%). Hybrid strains Ac18 (15.2%) and cultivated strains Ac33 (15.6%) showed the highest content of crude polysaccharides, while cultivated strains Ac1 and Ac33, demonstrated the highest content of total polysaccharides in the fruiting body (216 mg. g-1 and 200 mg. g-1). In the case of mineral content, the highest zinc contents were observed from the cultivated strain Ac46 (486.33 mg·kg-1). The maximum iron content was detected from the hybrid strain Ac3 (788 mg·kg-1), and the wild domesticated strain Ac28 (350 mg·kg-1). The crude polysaccharides of the A. cornea strain showed significant antioxidant potential, and the ability of Ac33 and Ac24 to scavenge DPPH radicals and ABTS, which was significantly improved compared to other strains, respectively. Principal component analysis was applied to examine the agronomic traits and chemical compounds of various strains of A. cornea mushrooms. The results revealed that cultivated, wild domesticated, and hybrid strains of A. cornea exhibited distinct characteristics in terms of growth, yield, and nutritional properties. Conclusion: The crude polysaccharides from A. cornea mushroom strains act as natural antioxidants, the wild, hybrid, and commercial A. cornea mushroom strains can achieve rapid growth, early maturation, and high yields. The evaluation of biochemical indexes and nutritional characteristics of strains with excellent traits provided a scientific basis for initiating high-quality breeding, provided germplasm resources for the production of "functional food" with real nutritional and health value.

Thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAAs) develop asymptomatically and are characterized by dilatation of the aorta. This is considered a life-threating vascular disease due to the risk of aortic rupture and without effective treatments. The current understanding of the pathogenesis of TAA is still limited, especially for sporadic TAAs without known genetic mutation. Sirtuin 6 (SIRT6) expression was significantly decreased in the tunica media of sporadic human TAA tissues. Genetic knockout of Sirt6 in mouse vascular smooth muscle cells accelerated TAA formation and rupture, reduced survival, and increased vascular inflammation and senescence after angiotensin II infusion. Transcriptome analysis identified interleukin (IL)-1ß as a pivotal target of SIRT6, and increased IL-1ß levels correlated with vascular inflammation and senescence in human and mouse TAA samples. Chromatin immunoprecipitation revealed that SIRT6 bound to the Il1b promoter to repress expression partly by reducing the H3K9 and H3K56 acetylation. Genetic knockout of Il1b or pharmacological inhibition of IL-1ß signaling with the receptor antagonist anakinra rescued Sirt6 deficiency mediated aggravation of vascular inflammation, senescence, TAA formation and survival in mice. The findings reveal that SIRT6 protects against TAA by epigenetically inhibiting vascular inflammation and senescence, providing insight into potential epigenetic strategies for TAA treatment.

X-ray detectors based on conventional semiconductors with large atomic numbers are suffering from the poor stability under a high dose rate of ionizing irradiation. In this work, we demonstrate that a wide band gap ceramic-boron nitride with small atomic numbers could be used for sensitive X-ray detection. Boron nitride samples showed excellent resistance to ionizing radiation, which have been systematically studied with the neutron- and electron-aging experiments. Then, we fully analyzed the influence of these aging effects on the fundamental properties of boron nitride. Interestingly, we found that the boron nitride samples could maintain relatively good charge transport properties even after large dose of neutron irradiation. The fabricated X-ray detectors showed decent performance metrics, and the neutron-aged boron nitride even showed improved operational stability under continuous X-ray irradiation, suggesting the great potential for real applications.

Chalcogenide-based semiconductors are emerging as a set of highly promising candidates for optoelectronic devices, owing to their low toxicity, cost-effectiveness, exceptional stability, and tunable optoelectronic properties. Nonetheless, the limited understanding of charge recombination mechanisms and trap states of these materials is impeding their further development. To fill this gap, we conducted a comprehensive study of bismuth-based chalcogenide thin films and systematically investigated the influence of post-treatments via time-resolved microwave conductivity and temperature-dependent photoluminescence. The key finding in this work is that post-treatment with Bi could effectively enhance the crystallinity and charge-carrier mobility. However, the carrier density also increased significantly after the Bi treatment. On the contrary, post-treatment of evaporated Bi2S3 thin films with sulfur could effectively increase the carrier lifetime and mobility by passivating the trap states on the grain boundaries, which is also consistent with the enhanced radiative recombination efficiency.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a chronic infectious disease of periodontal support tissue caused by microorganisms in dental plaque, which causes alveolar bone resorption and tooth loss. Periodontitis treatment goals include prevention of alveolar bone resorption and promotion of periodontal regeneration. We previously found that granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) was involved in periodontitis-related alveolar bone resorption through induction of an immune response and subsequent destruction of periodontal tissue. However, the mechanisms underlying the effects of G-CSF on abnormal bone remodeling have not yet been fully elucidated. Human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) are major modulators of osteogenic differentiation in periodontal tissues. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigated whether G-CSF acts effects on hPDLSC proliferation and osteogenic differentiation, as well as periodontal tissue repair. METHODS: hPDLSCs were cultured and identified by short tandem repeat analysis. The expression patterns and locations of G-CSF receptor (G-CSFR) on hPDLSCs were detected by immunofluorescence analysis. The effects of G-CSF on hPDLSCs in a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory microenvironment were investigated. Specifically, Cell-Counting Kit 8 (CCK8) and Alizarin red staining were used to examine hPDLSC proliferation and osteogenic differentiation; reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was performed to detect the expression patterns of osteogenesis-related genes (alkaline phosphatase [ALP], runt-related transcription factor 2 [Runx2], and osteocalcin [OCN]) in hPDLSCs; and Western blotting was used to detect the expression patterns of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) and protein kinase B (Akt) of PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. RESULTS: hPDLSCs exhibited a typical spindle-shaped morphology and good clonogenic ability. G-CSFR was mostly localized on the cell surface membrane. Analyses showed that G-CSF inhibited hPDLSC proliferation. Also, in the LPS-induced inflammatory microenvironment, G-CSF inhibited hPDLSC osteogenic differentiation and reduced the expression levels of osteogenesis-related genes. G-CSF increased the protein expression levels of hPDLSC pathway components p-PI3K and p-Akt. CONCLUSIONS: We found that G-CSFR was expressed on hPDLSCs. Furthermore, G-CSF inhibited hPDLSC osteogenic differentiation in vitro in the LPS-induced inflammatory microenvironment.

Metastatic spread of lung adenocarcinoma to the stomach is rare and most gastric metastases are discovered at the advanced stage due to certain symptoms. The present study reported two cases of asymptomatic gastric metastases from lung adenocarcinoma presenting as diminutive nodules or erosion endoscopically. The manifestations were also visualized under magnifying endoscopy with blue laser imaging (BLI-ME), the two cases share certain common characteristics under BLI-ME, such as an obviously widened intervening part and extended subepithelial capillary network, which indicated that lesions developed beneath the superficial epithelium. Target biopsy and further immunohistochemical staining confirmed that the gastric lesions were metastatic from primary lung cancer. None of the two patients were candidates for surgery due to multiple distant metastases, but the gastric metastases regressed to scars after systemic anticancer therapy. These two cases were presented in order to improve the current understanding of the endoscopic manifestations of early gastric metastases from lung cancer, and the outcomes may demonstrate that systemic treatment is effective for eliminating early gastric metastatic lesions.
