RESUMO

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), the most common subtype of hemorrhagic stroke, leads to cognitive impairment and imposes significant psychological burdens on patients. Hippocampal neurogenesis has been shown to play an essential role in cognitive function. Our previous study has shown that tetrahydrofolate (THF) promotes the proliferation of neural stem cells (NSCs). However, the effect of THF on cognition after ICH and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we demonstrated that administration of THF could restore cognition after ICH. Using Nestin-GFP mice, we further revealed that THF enhanced the proliferation of hippocampal NSCs and neurogenesis after ICH. Mechanistically, we found that THF could prevent ICH-induced elevated level of PTEN and decreased expressions of phosphorylated AKT and mTOR. Furthermore, conditional deletion of PTEN in NSCs of hippocampus attenuated the inhibitory effect of ICH on the proliferation of NSCs and abnormal neurogenesis. Taken together, these results provide molecular insights into ICH-induced cognitive impairment and suggest translational clinical therapeutic strategy for hemorrhagic stroke.Significance Statement Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) has been associated with cognitive dysfunction, yet its underlying mechanism remains elusive. Tetrahydrofolate (THF) has shown potential in promoting the proliferation of neural stem cells (NSCs), but its specific impact on cognitive recovery following ICH is still to be confirmed. Through the utilization of the Nestin-GFP genetic marker to track endogenous NSCs in mice, our study revealed that THF could regulate PTEN pathway to ameliorate cognitive impairment post-ICH by enhancing the proliferation of NSCs and sustaining neurogenesis. These findings contribute to valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms involved and suggest potential clinical applications for enhancing cognitive function recovery after ICH.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with mortality and morbidity in critically ill patients. This study investigated the safety and effectiveness of enteral high-dose vitamin D supplementation in intensive care unit (ICU) patients in Asia. METHODS: This was a multicenter, prospective, randomized-controlled study. Eligible participants with vitamin D deficiency were randomly assigned to the control or vitamin D supplementation group. In the vitamin D supplementation group, the patients received 569,600 IU vitamin D. The primary outcome was the serum 25(OH)D level on day 7. RESULTS: 41 and 20 patients were included in the vitamin D supplementation and control groups, respectively. On day 7, the serum 25(OH)D level was significantly higher in the vitamin D supplementation group compared to the control group (28.5 [IQR: 20.2-52.6] ng/mL and 13.9 [IQR: 11.6-18.8] ng/mL, p < 0.001). Only 41.5% of the patients achieved serum 25(OH)D levels higher than 30 ng/mL in the supplementation group. This increased level was sustained in the supplementation group on both day 14 and day 28. There were no significant adverse effects noted in the supplementation group. Patients who reached a serum 25(OH)D level of >30 ng/mL on day 7 had a significantly lower 30-day mortality rate than did those who did not (5.9% vs 37.5%, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In our study, less than half of the patients reached adequate vitamin D levels after the enteral administration of high-dose vitamin D. A reduction in 30-day mortality was noted in the patients who achieved adequate vitamin D levels. TRIAL REGISTRATION CLINICALTRIALS. GOV ID: NCT04292873, Registered, March 1, 2020.

RESUMO

To quantitatively assess the diagnostic efficacy of multiple parameters derived from multi-b-value diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) using turbo spin echo (TSE)-based acquisition techniques in patients with solitary pulmonary lesions (SPLs). A total of 105 patients with SPLs underwent lung DWI using single-shot TSE-based acquisition techniques and multiple b values. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) parameters, and lesion-to-spinal cord signal intensity ratio (LSR), were analyzed to compare the benign and malignant groups using the Mann-Whitney U test and receiver operating characteristic analysis. The Dstar values observed in lung cancer were slightly lower than those observed in pulmonary benign lesions (28.164 ± 31.950 versus 32.917 ± 34.184; Z = -2.239, p = 0.025). The LSR values were significantly higher in lung cancer than in benign lesions (1.137 ± 0.581 versus 0.614 ± 0.442; Z = - 4.522, p < 0.001). Additionally, the ADC800, ADCtotal, and D values were all significantly lower in lung cancer than in the benign lesions (Z = - 5.054, -5.370, and -6.047, respectively, all p < 0.001), whereas the f values did not exhibit any statistically significant difference between the two groups. D had the highest area under the curve (AUC = 0.887), followed by ADCtotal (AUC = 0.844), ADC800 (AUC = 0.824), and LSR (AUC = 0.789). The LSR, ADC800, ADCtotal, and D values did not differ statistically significantly in diagnostic effectiveness. Lung DWI using TSE is feasible for differentiating SPLs. The LSR method, conventional DWI, and IVIM have comparable diagnostic efficacy for assessing SPLs.

RESUMO

Chiral perovskites play a pivotal role in spintronics and optoelectronic systems attributed to their chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. Specifically, they allow for spin-polarized charge transport in spin light-emitting diodes (LEDs), yielding circularly polarized electroluminescence at room temperature without external magnetic fields. However, chiral lead bromide-based perovskites have yet to achieve high-performance green emissive spin-LEDs, owing to limited CISS effects and charge transport. Herein, we employ dimensional regulation and Sn2+-doping to optimize chiral bromide-based perovskite architecture for green emissive spin-LEDs. The optimized (PEA)x(S/R-PRDA)2-xSn0.1Pb0.9Br4 chiral perovskite film exhibits an enhanced CISS effect, higher hole mobility, and better energy level alignment with the emissive layer. These improvements allow us to fabricate green emissive spin-LEDs with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5.7% and an asymmetry factor |gCP-EL| of 1.1 × 10-3. This work highlights the importance of tailored perovskite architectures and doping strategies in advancing spintronics for optoelectronic applications.

RESUMO

LncRNAs have shown to regulate ferroptosis in colorectal cancer (CRC), but the mechanism remains largely unknown. This study unveiled the mechanism of SNHG4 underlying ferroptosis in CRC. RNA-seq and RT-PCR assay confirmed SNHG4 was decreased after Erastin treatment in CRC cells. Overexpression of SNHG4 inhibited and silence promoted CRC cells ferroptosis. SNHG4 was positively correlated to c-Myb in CRC tissues and both located in cytoplasm of CRC cells. RIP and RNA pull-down assays verified the interaction between SNHG4 and c-Myb. Silence of c-Myb alleviated the suppressing effect on ferroptosis by SNHG4 in CRC cells. Dual-luciferase reporter assay revealed that SNHG4 sponging miR-150-5p in CRC cells. Overexpression of SNHG4 decreased the miR-150-5p and increased c-Myb expression. c-Myb was a direct target gene of miR-150-5p in CRC cells. Moreover, effect of CDO1 on ferroptosis was regulated transcriptionally by c-Myb, overexpression of c-Myb reduce CDO1 expression and enhance the GPX4 levels. The animal models confirmed that regulatory effect of SNHG4 on miR-150-5p and c-Myb after inducing ferroptosis. We concluded that SNHG4 inhibited Erastin-induce ferroptosis in CRC, this effect is via sponging miR-150-5p to regulate c-Myb expression, and activated CDO1/GPX4 axis. These findings provide insights into the regulatory mechanism of SNHG4 on ferroptosis.

RESUMO

The restoration of lakes and their buffer zones is crucial for understanding the intricate interplay between human activities and natural ecosystems resulting from the implementation of environmental policies. In this study, we investigated the ecological restoration of shallow lakes and buffer zones in the Yangtze-Huaihe River Basin, specifically focusing on the removal of polder and aquaculture enclosure areas within the lakes. By examining data from eight shallow lakes and their corresponding buffer zones, encompassing lake morphology, water quality parameters, and land use/land cover (LULC) data spanning from 2008 to 2022, which shed light on the complex relationships involved. During the process of restoring polder and aquaculture enclosure areas, we observed a general decrease in the extent of polders and aquaculture enclosures within the lakes. Notably, the removal of aquaculture enclosures had a more pronounced effect (reduction rate of 83.37 %) compared to the withdrawal of polders (reduction rate of 48.76 %). Linear regression analysis revealed a significant decrease in the concentrations of seven water quality parameters, including COD, CODMn, TN, TP, NH3-N, Chl-a, and F, while pH and DO factors exhibit a distinct increasing trend. The results of redundancy analysis and Pearson correlation analysis demonstrated significant correlations between the area of polders and aquaculture enclosures and the changes in lake water quality. Encouragingly, the withdrawal of polders and the removal of aquaculture enclosures had a positive impact on the lake water quality improvement. In contrast, the LULC in the buffer zones of the lakes experienced a gradual decline owing to land degradation, resulting in a reduction in ecosystem service value (ESV). These results offer valuable support for policymakers in their endeavors to restore lake water quality, mitigate the degradation of buffer zones land, and promote the sustainable development of land and water resources.

RESUMO

Background: Individuals presenting to hospital due to suicide attempt are at high risk for repeated suicidal act, yet there are meager data on the extent to which repeated suicidal acts result in death. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was based on a general hospital self-harm register system in a rural county in China. Identified individuals who attempted suicide were contacted and followed up for up to 8 years. Main outcomes over follow-up were: 1) suicide death, 2) nonlethal suicide attempt, and 3) suicidal acts including suicide death and nonlethal attempt. Incidence densities, correlates, and case fatality of repeated suicidal acts were estimated. Findings: A total of 1086 individuals (two-thirds females, mean age 40.6 years) with a suicide attempt presenting to hospital (index attempt) were identified and followed up, with most of the index attempts by pesticide ingestion (79%). Over follow-up, there were 116 suicidal acts carried out by 108 individuals (69 females, 39 males), including 34 suicide deaths (21 females, 13 males), yielding a high case-fatality of 29.3%. During follow-up, suicide death rates were also high overall and in the first year of follow-up (846.7 and 1787.2 per 100,000 person years). Over follow-up, pesticide was the most common method (47/116) of repeated suicidal act and yielded a higher case-fatality than other methods (46.8% vs 17.4%, χ2 = 11.68, P < 0.001). The incidence densities of repeated suicidal acts and nonlethal attempts were low compared to rates reported in previous literature. Interpretation: Incidence densities of repeated suicidal acts in a rural China cohort were low compared to previous studies. However, rates of suicide deaths over follow-up were high, a result driven by the high case-fatality of suicidal acts and attributable to the common use of pesticides. Reducing suicidal acts with pesticides is a key target for suicide prevention in rural China. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Decompressive craniectomy, a surgery to remove part of the skull and open the dura mater, maybe an effective treatment for controlling intracranial hypertension. It remains great interest to elucidate whether decompressive craniectomy is beneficial to intracerebral hemorrhage patients who warrant clot removal to prevent intracranial hypertension. METHODS: The trial was a prospective, pragmatic, controlled trial involving adult patients with intracerebral hemorrhage who were undergoing removal of hematoma. Intracerebral hemorrhage patients were randomly assigned at a 1:1 ratioto undergo clot removal with or without decompressive craniectomy under the monitoring of intracranial pressure. The primary outcome was the proportion of unfavorable functional outcome (modified Rankin Scale 3-6) at 3 months. Secondary outcomes included the mortality at 3 months and the occurrence of re-operation. RESULTS: A total of 102 patients were assigned to the clot removal with decompressive craniectomy group and 102 to the clot removal group. Median hematoma volume was 54.0 mL (range 30-80 mL) and median preoperative Glasgow Coma Scale was 10 (range 5-15). At 3 months, 94 patients (92.2%) in clot removal with decompressive craniectomy group and 83 patients (81.4%) in the clot removal group had unfavorable functional outcome (P=0.023). Fourteen patients (13.7%) in the clot removal with decompressive craniectomy group died versus five patients (4.9%) in the clot removal group (P=0.030). The number of patients with re-operation was similar between the clot removal with decompressive craniectomy group and clot removal group (5.9% vs. 3.9%; P=0.517). Postoperative intracranial pressure values were not significantly different between two groups and the mean values were less than 20 mmHg. CONCLUSIONS: Clot removal without decompressive craniectomy decreased the rate of modified Rankin Scale score of 3-6 and mortality in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage, compared with clot removal with decompressive craniectomy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The optimal proximal margin (PM) length for Siewert II/III adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction (AEJ) remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the optimal PM length using an abdominal approach to guide surgical decision-making. METHODS: A prospective study analyzed 304 consecutive patients diagnosed with Siewert II/III AEJ between January 2019 and December 2021. Total gastrectomy was performed via the abdominal approach, and PM length was measured on fixed gross specimens. X-Tile software determined the optimal PM cut-point based on progression-free survival (PFS). Univariate analyses compared baseline characteristics across PM groups, while survival analyses utilized Kaplan-Meier estimation and Cox proportional hazards regression for assessing the impact of margin length on survival. Multivariable analyses were conducted to adjust for confounding variables. RESULTS: The study included 264 AEJ cases classified as Siewert II (71.97%) or III (28.03%). The median gross PM length was 1.0 cm (IQR: 0.5 cm-1.5 cm, range: 0 cm-6 cm). PM length ≥1.2 cm was associated with a lower risk of disease progression compared to PM length 0.4 cm on PFS (HR = 0.41, 95% CI 0.20-0.84, P = 0.015). Moreover, PM ≥ 1.2 cm improved prognosis in subgroups of T4 or N3, tumor size <4 cm, Siewert II, and Lauren classification. CONCLUSIONS: For Siewert type II/III AEJ, a proximal margin length ≥1.2 cm (1.65 cm in situ) is associated with improved outcomes. These findings offer valuable insights into the association between PM length and outcomes in Siewert II/III AEJ, providing guidance for surgical approaches and aiding clinical decision-making to enhance patient outcomes.

RESUMO

Oxaliplatin resistance poses a significant challenge in colorectal cancer (CRC) therapy, necessitating further investigation into the underlying molecular mechanisms. This study aimed to elucidate the regulatory role of SNHG4 in oxaliplatin resistance and ferroptosis in CRC. Our findings revealed that treatment with oxaliplatin led to downregulation of SNHG4 expression in CRC cells, while resistant CRC cells exhibited higher levels of SNHG4 compared to parental cells. Silencing SNHG4 attenuated oxaliplatin resistance and reduced the expression of resistance-related proteins MRD1 and MPR1. Furthermore, induction of ferroptosis effectively diminished oxaliplatin resistance in both parental and resistant CRC cells. Notably, ferroptosis induction resulted in decreased SNHG4 expression, whereas SNHG4 overexpression suppressed ferroptosis. Through FISH, RIP, and RNA pull-down assays, we identified the cytoplasmic localization of both SNHG4 and PTEN, establishing that SNHG4 directly targets PTEN, thereby reducing mRNA stability in CRC cells. Silencing PTEN abrogated the impact of SNHG4 on oxaliplatin resistance and ferroptosis in CRC cells. In vivo experiments further validated the influence of SNHG4 on oxaliplatin resistance and ferroptosis in CRC cells through PTEN regulation. In conclusion, SNHG4 promotes resistance to oxaliplatin in CRC cells by suppressing ferroptosis through instability of PTEN, thus serves as a target for patients with oxaliplatin-base chemoresistance.

RESUMO

STUDY QUESTION: Are there associations of age at menarche (AAM) with health-related outcomes in East Asians? SUMMARY ANSWER: AAM is associated with osteoporosis, Type 2 diabetes (T2D), glaucoma, and uterine fibroids, as demonstrated through observational studies, polygenic risk scores, genetic correlations, and Mendelian randomization (MR), with additional findings indicating a causal effect of BMI and T2D on earlier AAM. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Puberty timing is linked to adult disease risk, but research predominantly focuses on European populations, with limited studies in other groups. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: We performed an AAM genome-wide association study (GWAS) with 57 890 Han Taiwanese females and examined the association between AAM and 154 disease outcomes using the Taiwanese database. Additionally, we examined genetic correlations between AAM and 113 diseases and 67 phenotypes using Japanese GWAS summary statistics. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: We performed AAM GWAS and gene-based GWAS studies to obtain summary statistics and identify potential AAM-related genes. We applied phenotype, polygenic risk scores, and genetic correlation analyses of AAM to explore health-related outcomes, using multivariate regression and linkage disequilibrium score regression analyses. We also explored potential bidirectional causal relationships between AAM and related outcomes through univariable and multivariable MR analyses. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: Fifteen lead single-nucleotide polymorphisms and 24 distinct genes were associated with AAM in Taiwan. AAM was genetically associated with later menarche and menopause, greater height, increased osteoporosis risk, but lower BMI, and reduced risks of T2D, glaucoma, and uterine fibroids in East Asians. Bidirectional MR analyses indicated that higher BMI/T2D causally leads to earlier AAM. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: Our findings were specific to Han Taiwanese individuals, with genetic correlation analyses conducted in East Asians. Further research in other ethnic groups is necessary. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: Our study provides insights into the genetic architecture of AAM and its health-related outcomes in East Asians, highlighting causal links between BMI/T2D and earlier AAM, which may suggest potential prevention strategies for early puberty. RESUMO

To explore the effect of K33 only mutant ubiquitin (K33O) on bone marrow-derived dendritic cells' (BMDCs') maturity, antigen uptake capability, surface molecule expressions and BMDC-mediated CTL priming, and further investigate the role of PI3K-Akt engaged in K33O-increased BMDC maturation, antigen uptake and presentation, surface molecule expressions and BMDC-based CTL priming. BMDCs were conferred K33O and other ubiquitin mutants (K33R, K48R, K63R-mutant ubiquitin) incubation or LY294002 and wortmannin pretreatment. PI3K-Akt phosphorylation, antigen uptake, antigenic presentation and CD86/MHC class I expression in BMDC were determined by western blot or flow cytometry. BMDC-based CTL proliferation and priming were determined by in vitro mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR), ex vivo enzyme-linked immunospot assay (Elispot) and flow cytometry with intracellular staining, respectively. The treatment with K33O effectively augmented PI3K-Akt phosphorylation, BMDCs' antigen uptake, antigenic presentation, CD86/MHC class I and CD11c expressions. MLR, Elispot and flow cytometry revealed that K33O treatment obviously enhanced CTL proliferation, CTL priming and perforin/granzyme B expression. The pretreatment with PI3K-Akt inhibitors efficiently abrogated K33O's effects on BMDC. The replenishment of K33 only mutant ubiquitin augments BMDC-mediated CTL priming in bone marrow-derived dendritic cells via PI3K-Akt signalling.

RESUMO

A novel triple helical-like complex [Dy2K2L3(NO3)2]·3DMF (1) based on a designed Schiff base N'1,N'3-bis((E)-3-ethoxy-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-malonohydrazide (H4L) was synthesized with good chemical and thermal stabilities. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis showed that 1 presents a tetranuclear triple helical-like structure via the coordination mode of Dy : K : L with 2 : 2 : 3 stoichiometry. Fluorescence measurements showed that 1@EtOH has excellent fluorescence turn-on/off response ability for aluminium ions and 4,5-dimethyl-2-nitroaniline (DMNA) with outstanding selectivity, sensitivity, and anti-interference ability. The calculated limit of detection (LOD) values for 1@EtOH to Al3+ and DMNA were found to be 0.53 and 3.33 µM, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation showed that the fluorescence response mechanism can be explained by the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism; meanwhile, the inner filter effect (IFE) of DMNA can also affect the emission of 1@EtOH.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (LBP) related to flight is a prevalent health issue in military aviation, impacting pilots. The objective of this investigation was to ascertain if the application of core muscle training in conjunction with interferential current (IFC) therapy results in a reduction in pain severity and associated disability, consequently enhancing core muscle functionality in Chinese Air Force high-performance fighter pilots experiencing chronic LBP. METHODS: Fifty-three fighter pilots with chronic LBP were randomized into 3 groups: a core muscle exercise combined with IFC group (CG, n = 19), a core muscle exercise group (EG, n = 19), and an IFC group (IG, n = 15). The three groups underwent therapeutic intervention 5 times a week for 12 weeks. The primary outcomes were pain intensity, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) score and SF-12 health-related quality of life (PCS and MCS) score. Secondary outcomes included evaluations of trunk muscle strength, endurance, and range of motion (ROM) during medial/lateral rotation to assess muscle functionality. Measurements were obtained both before and after the implementation of the intervention therapy. RESULTS: After 12 weeks of intervention therapy, all the health condition parameters significantly improved among the three groups. However, the CG had a significant improvement in pain intensity compared to the EG (MD = - 0.84 scores; 95% CI = - 1.54 to - 0.15; p = 0.013) and the IG (MD = - 1.22 scores; 95% CI = - 1.96 to - 0.48; p = 0.000). Additionally, the CG led to greater conservation of ODI and improved SF-12 PCS scores than did the IG (p < 0.05). Finally, compared with those at baseline, the core muscle function parameters in the CG and EG improved significantly at the end of the study, but no statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Among participants with chronic LBP, three intervention therapies appear effective in reducing pain, diminishing disability, and enhancing quality of life. Also, combined therapy significantly improved pain and disability compared to the other two monotherapies; moreover, combined therapy and core muscle exercise provided similar benefits in terms of core muscle function after 12 weeks of intervention therapy.

RESUMO

Inorganic cesium lead bromide nanocrystals (CsPbBr3 NCs) hold promising prospects for high performance green light-emitting diodes (LEDs) due to their exceptional color purity and high luminescence efficiency. However, the common ligands employed for passivating these indispensable NCs, such as long-chain organic ligands like oleic acid and oleylamine (OA/OAm), display highly dynamic binding and electronic insulating issues, thereby resulting in a low efficiency of the as-fabricated LEDs. Herein, we report a new zwitterionic short-branched alkyl sulfobetaine ligand, namely trioctyl(propyl-3-sulfonate) ammonium betaine (TOAB), to in situ passivate CsPbBr3 NCs via a feasible one-step solution synthesis, enabling efficiency improvement of CsPbBr3 NC-based LEDs. The zwitterionic TOAB ligand not only strengthened the surface passivation of CsPbBr3 NCs with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 97%, but also enhanced the carrier transport in the fabricated CsPbBr3 NC thin films due to the short-branched alkyl design. Consequently, CsPbBr3 NCs passivated with TOAB achieved a green LED with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.3% and a maximum luminance of 5716 cd m-2, surpassing those of LEDs based on insulating long-chain ligand-passivated NCs. Our work provides an effective surface passivation ligand design to enhance the performance of CsPbBr3 NC-based LEDs.

RESUMO

Halide superionic conductors (SICs) are drawing significant research attention for their potential applications in all-solid-state batteries. A key challenge in developing such SICs is to explore and design halide structural frameworks that enable rapid ion movement. In this work, we show that the close-packed anion frameworks shared by traditional halide ionic conductors face intrinsic limitations in fast ion conduction, regardless of structural regulation. Beyond the close-packed anion frameworks, we identify that the non-close-packed anion frameworks have great potential to achieve superionic conductivity. Notably, we unravel that the non-close-packed UCl3-type framework exhibit superionic conductivity for a diverse range of carrier ions, including Li+, Na+, K+, and Ag+, which are validated through both ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and experimental measurements. We elucidate that the remarkable ionic conductivity observed in the UCl3-type framework structure stems from its significantly more distorted site and larger diffusion channel than its close-packed counterparts. By employing the non-close-packed anion framework as the key feature for high-throughput computational screening, we also identify LiGaCl3 as a promising candidate for halide SICs. These discoveries provide crucial insights for the exploration and design of novel halide SICs.

RESUMO

The left atrial appendage (LAA) occluder is an important medical device for closing the LAA and preventing stroke. The device-related thrombus (DRT) prevents the implantation of the occluder in exerting the desired therapeutic effect, which is primarily caused by the delayed endothelialization of the occluder. Functional coatings are an effective strategy for accelerating the endothelialization of occluders. However, the occluder surface area is particularly large and structurally complex, and the device is subjected to a large shear friction in the sheath during implantation, which poses a significant challenge to the coating. Herein, a hydrogel coating by the in situ UV-triggered polymerization of double-network polyelectrolytes is reported. The findings reveal that the double network and electrostatic interactions between the networks resulted in excellent mechanical properties of the hydrogel coating. The sulfonate and Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) groups in the coating promoted hemocompatibility and endothelial growth of the occluder, respectively. The coating significantly accelerated the endothelialization of the LAA occluder in a canine model is further demonstrated. This study has potential clinical benefits in reducing both the incidence of DRT and the postoperative anticoagulant course for LAA closure.

RESUMO

Tungsten (W) is an extremely rare and vital metal extensively used in metallurgy, the chemical industry, optoelectronic devices, and machinery manufacturing. In this work, an environmentally friendly and efficient physical method based on photon-phonon resonance absorption (PPRA) is proposed for separating W from scheelite. We calculated the vibrational spectrum of calcium tungstate (CaWO4) and assigned the infrared (IR) absorption and Raman scattering peaks through a dynamic analysis of the normal modes. We focused on the strong IR absorption peaks related to W and identified three high-intensity IR-active modes at around 830 cm-1, corresponding to the stretching of the W-O bonds. Therefore, we propose the use of high-power terahertz (∼25 THz) laser radiation to facilitate W extraction from compounds, leveraging the high efficiency of PPRA. Experimental testing is required to determine the precise absorption frequency under industrial production conditions.

RESUMO

Power Doppler ultrasound (PD-US) is the ideal modality to assess tissue perfusion as it is cheap, patient-friendly and does not require ionizing radiation. However, meaningful inter-patient comparison only occurs if differences in tissue-attenuation are corrected for. This can be done by standardizing the PD-US signal to a blood vessel assumed to have 100% vascularity. The original method to do this is called fractional moving blood volume (FMBV). We describe a novel, fully-automated method combining image processing, numerical modelling, and deep learning to estimate three-dimensional single vessel fractional moving blood volume (3D-svFMBV). We map the PD signals to a characteristic intensity profile within a single large vessel to define the standardization value at the high shear vessel margins. This removes the need for mathematical correction for background signal which can introduce error. The 3D-svFMBV was first tested on synthetic images generated using the characteristics of uterine artery and physiological ultrasound noise levels, demonstrating prediction of standardization value close to the theoretical ideal. Clinical utility was explored using 143 first-trimester placental ultrasound volumes. More biologically plausible perfusion estimates were obtained, showing improved prediction of pre-eclampsia compared with those generated with the semi-automated original 3D-FMBV technique. The proposed 3D-svFMBV method overcomes the limitations of the original technique to provide accurate and robust placental perfusion estimation. This not only has the potential to provide an early pregnancy screening tool but may also be used to assess perfusion of different organs and tumors.
