Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) are emerging techniques that use biological production of current for versatile activities, including energy recovery and bioremediation. The development of high-performance three-dimensional (3D) electrodes has attracted attention for facilitating current production in BESs. Carbon-based electrodes have been commonly used in BESs, but metal electrodes are not generally employed because of their low biocompatibility with microbes. In this study, 3D stainless-steel electrodes, composed of octahedral lattice, were fabricated using the 3D printing technique. Heat treatment was conducted to form an iron-oxide layer on the electrode surface for increasing biocompatibility. Another crucial parameter that determines current production is the pitch length of a lattice electrode as it affects the surface area and substrate diffusion. The pitch length was optimized by testing the lattice electrodes with pitches ranging from 1.5 mm to 6.0 mm. The highest current, obtained with the 3.0 mm-pitch electrode, was 50% higher than that obtained with common 3D carbon-felt electrodes. These results demonstrate the usefulness of 3D lattice-structured metal electrodes in BESs.

RESUMO

A new microsporidian disease of cultured rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss has recently been confirmed in Japan, and the causative species was tentatively designated as Microsporidium sp. RBT-2021. Involvement of common prawn Palaemon paucidens in its transmission was suggested based on the previous feeding trials, although the microsporidian infection in P. paucidens was not confirmed. In this study, P. paucidens in Lake Biwa, Japan was investigated for microsporidian infection and 4 types of spores (types 1-4) were newly found. The nucleotide sequence of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene was identical between type 1 and Microsporidium sp. RBT-2021, indicating they are conspecific. However, intriguingly, the spore morphology and the mode of development in fish and prawn were strikingly different. Morphological observations revealed type 1 in the prawn possesses characteristics of the genus Inodosporus Overstreet and Weidner, 1974, while Microsporidium sp. RBT-2021 in the trout exhibited the characteristics of the genus Kabatana Lom, Dyková and Tonguthai, 2000. In the phylogeny, type 1 was placed within a clade comprising Kabatana spp. and Inodosporus octosporus. Based on the morphological and molecular analyses, we describe Microsporidium sp. RBT-2021 as Inodosporus fujiokai n. sp. Together with the success of the previous prawn-feeding trials, this study strongly suggests I. fujiokai n. sp. has a multi-host life cycle utilizing fish and crustacean hosts and different modes of development in each host. Such polymorphic life cycle has barely been known among fish microsporidians. This study also suggests that the genus Kabatana is a junior synonym of the genus Inodosporus.

BACKGROUND: Emphysematous pancreatitis is acute pancreatitis associated with emphysema based on imaging studies and has been considered a subtype of necrotizing pancreatitis. Although some recent studies have reported the successful use of conservative treatment, it is still considered a serious condition. Computed tomography (CT) scan is useful in identifying emphysema associated with acute pancreatitis; however, whether the presence of emphysema correlates with the severity of pancreatitis remains controversial. In this study, we managed two cases of severe acute pancreatitis complicated with retroperitoneal emphysema successfully by treatment with lavage and drainage. CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1: A 76-year-old man was referred to our hospital after being diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. At post-admission, his abdominal symptoms worsened, and a repeat CT scan revealed increased retroperitoneal gas. Due to the high risk for gastrointestinal tract perforation, emergent laparotomy was performed. Fat necrosis was observed on the anterior surface of the pancreas, and a diagnosis of acute necrotizing pancreatitis with retroperitoneal emphysema was made. Thus, retroperitoneal drainage was performed. Case 2: A 50-year-old woman developed anaphylactic shock during the induction of general anesthesia for lumbar spine surgery, and peritoneal irritation symptoms and hypotension occurred on the same day. Contrast-enhanced CT scan showed necrotic changes in the pancreatic body and emphysema surrounding the pancreas. Therefore, she was diagnosed with acute necrotizing pancreatitis with retroperitoneal emphysema, and retroperitoneal cavity lavage and drainage were performed. In the second case, the intraperitoneal abscess occurred postoperatively, requiring time for drainage treatment. Both patients showed no significant postoperative course problems and were discharged on postoperative days 18 and 108, respectively. CONCLUSION: Acute pancreatitis with emphysema from the acute phase highly indicates severe necrotizing pancreatitis. Surgical drainage should be chosen without hesitation in necrotizing pancreatitis with emphysema from early onset.

Recent neuroscience studies have suggested that cognitive functions and learning capacity are reflected in the time-evolving dynamics of brain networks. However, an efficient method to detect changes in dynamical brain structures using neural data has yet to be established. To address this issue, we developed a new model-based approach to detect change points in dynamical network structures by combining the model-based network estimation with a phase-coupled oscillator model and sequential Bayesian inference. By giving the model parameter as the prior distribution, applying Bayesian inference allows the extent of temporal changes in dynamic brain networks to be quantified by comparing the prior distribution with the posterior distribution using information theoretical criteria. For this, we used the Kullback-Leibler divergence as an index of such changes. To validate our method, we applied it to numerical data and electroencephalography data. As a result, we confirmed that the Kullback-Leibler divergence only increased when changes in dynamical network structures occurred. Our proposed method successfully estimated both directed network couplings and change points of dynamical structures in the numerical and electroencephalography data. These results suggest that our proposed method can reveal the neural basis of dynamic brain networks.

PURPOSE: To compare clinical success rates and reductions in intraocular pressure (IOP) and IOP-lowering medication use following suture trabeculotomy ab interno (S group) or microhook trabeculotomy (µ group). METHODS: This retrospective review collected data from S (n = 104, 122 eyes) and µ (n = 42, 47 eyes) groups who underwent treatment between June 1, 2016, and October 31, 2019, and had 12-month follow-up data including IOP, glaucoma medications, complications, and additional IOP-lowering procedures. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to evaluate treatment success rates defined as normal IOP (> 5 to ≤ 18 mm Hg), ≥ 20% reduction of IOP from baseline at two consecutive visits, and no further glaucoma surgery. RESULTS: Schlemm's canal opening was longer in the S group than in the µ group (P < 0.0001). The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis of all eyes showed cumulative clinical success rates in S and µ groups were 71.1% and 61.7% (P = 0.230). The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis of eyes with preoperative IOP ≥ 21 mmHg showed cumulative clinical success rates in S and µ groups were 80.4% and 60.0% (P = 0.0192). There were no significant differences in postoperative IOP at 1, 3, and 6 months (S group, 14.9 ± 5.6, 14.6 ± 4.5, 14.6 ± 3.9 mmHg; µ group, 15.8 ± 5.9, 15.2 ± 4.4, 14.7 ± 3.7 mmHg; P = 0.364, 0.443, 0.823), but postoperative IOP was significantly lower in the S group at 12 months (S group, 14.1 ± 3.1 mmHg; µ group, 15.6 ± 4.1 mmHg; P = 0.0361). There were no significant differences in postoperative numbers of glaucoma medications at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months (S group, 1.8 ± 1.6, 1.8 ± 1.5, 2.0 ± 1.6, 1.8 ± 1.5; µ group, 2.0 ± 1.6, 2.0 ± 1.6, 2.1 ± 1.6, 2.2 ± 1.7; P = 0.699, 0.420, 0.737, 0.198). CONCLUSION: S and µ group eyes achieved IOP reduction, but µ group eyes had lower clinical success rates among patients with high preoperative IOP at 12 months.

PURPOSE: Intravitreal anti-VEGF injection (IVI) is administered before vitrectomy to assist management of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR)-related complications. In the clinical setting, retinal surgeons determine the use of preoperative IVI based on individual criteria. In this study, we investigated factors related to the potential bias of retinal surgeons in using IVI prior to vitrectomy for PDR-related complications, and evaluated the real-world outcomes of surgeon-determined preoperative IVI. METHODS: Medical records of 409 eyes of 409 patients who underwent 25-gauge vitrectomy for PDR complications at seven Japanese centers (22 surgeons) were retrospectively reviewed. Ocular factors, demographic and general clinical factors, surgical procedures, and postoperative complications were compared between IVI group (patients who received preoperative IVI; 87 eyes, 21.3%) and non-IVI group (patients who did not receive preoperative IVI; 322 eyes, 78.7%). In addition, baseline HbA1c in IVI group and non-IVI group was compared between eyes with and without postoperative complications. RESULTS: At baseline, IVI group was younger (P<0.001), had shorter duration of diabetes treatment (P = 0.045), and higher frequencies of neovascular glaucoma [NVG] (P<0.001) and tractional retinal detachment [TRD] (P<0.001) compared to non-IVI group. Although IVI group had higher frequencies of intraoperative retinal break and tamponade procedure, there were no significant differences in postoperative complications and additional treatments between two groups. Baseline HbA1c levels were also not correlated with postoperative complications of VH, NVG, and RD both in IVI group and non-IVI group. Logistic regression analysis identified age (P<0.001, odds ratio [OR] 0.95), presence of NVG (P<0.001, OR 20.2), and presence of TRD (P = 0.0014, OR 2.44) as preoperative factors in favor of IVI. CONCLUSIONS: In this multicenter real-world clinical study, younger age and presence of NVG and TRD were identified as potential biases in using IVI before vitrectomy for PDR complications. Eyes that received preoperative IVI had more intraoperative retinal breaks requiring tamponade than eyes not receiving IVI, but postoperative outcome was not different between the two groups.

Background: Recent advances in endoscopic devices such as small bowel capsule endoscopy and balloon-assisted endoscopy have improved the level of medical care for small bowel bleeding. However, treating small bowel angioectasia remains challenging because repeated intermittent bleeding can occur from the multiple minute lesions (about 1 mm in size) that develop in a synchronous and metachronous manner. Here, we report a case of small bowel angioectasia in which capsule endoscopy performed early in a bleeding episode contributed to treatment. Case Summary: A 66-year-old man with suspected small bowel bleeding underwent small bowel capsule endoscopy and balloon-assisted endoscopy with argon plasma coagulation hemostasis for a small intestinal angioectasia. Because small bowel bleeding recurred intermittently after the treatment, small bowel capsule endoscopy and balloon-assisted endoscopy were repeated when there was no bleeding, but no abnormalities were found. Subsequent small bowel capsule endoscopy during a bleeding episode revealed bloody intestinal fluid in the proximal small intestine. Peroral balloon-assisted endoscopy was performed 2 days after SBCE for detailed observation of the small intestinal mucosa at the suspected bleeding site, and there a 1-mm Dieulafoy's lesion with no active bleeding was identified. We performed argon plasma coagulation, and no bleeding was observed thereafter. Conclusions: Small bowel capsule endoscopy immediately after bleeding onset can identify the bleeding source of multiple minute lesions in small bowel angioectasia.

A numerical simulation of a single-reed instrument with a pressure chamber is conducted to examine the interaction among the flow, reed oscillation, and acoustic propagation. The flow and acoustic fields are predicted using the three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations, whereas the one-dimensional dynamic beam equation is solved for reed oscillation. The deforming geometry in the aeroacoustic field is expressed by the volume penalization method as an immersed boundary technique. The results showed that the waveforms of the tip opening and far-field acoustic spectra agreed well with those measured experimentally. The three-dimensional flow configuration near the tip opening was visualized, and the measurement of the instantaneous volume flow rate at the tip opening revealed that 30%-40% of the total flow rate passed through the side opening. The spectral tendencies of the time derivatives of the flow rate for different tip openings were consistent with that of the far-field sound, indicating that the slope of the flow rate waveform significantly affects the generated sound's harmonics.

Chronic idiopathic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIIP) caused by impaired intestinal peristalsis leads to intestinal obstructive symptoms. A 20-year-old man had marked esophageal dilatation that was found incidentally on chest radiography during a health examination. Chest/abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography and endoscopy showed marked esophageal and duodenal dilatation without mechanical obstruction. Upper gastrointestinal series and high-resolution esophageal manometry revealed absent peristalsis in the dilated part. CIIP was suspected in the patient's father, suggesting familial CIIP. The patient likely had signs of pre-onset CIIP. This is the first case of suspected CIIP in which detailed gastrointestinal tract examinations were performed before symptoms appeared.

Mesalazine formulations are essential for treating ulcerative colitis (UC), and intolerance to these formulations complicates the treatment of this condition. Some cases of mesalazine formulation intolerance are caused by the excipients rather than the active ingredient mesalazine. Therefore, mesalazine administration can be continued in such cases by changing the mesalazine formulation. This report describes a case of intolerance to mesalazine in which UC was effectively treated by switching mesalazine formulations. A drug-induced lymphocyte stimulation test suggested that allergy to the additive povidone was the cause of mesalazine formulation intolerance. This is the first case study to identify an additive that caused mesalazine formulation intolerance.

A bioelectrochemical system (BES)-based trickling filter (TF) reactor was utilized for wastewater treatment. At a COD load of 1.0 g-COD/L/day, effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (TN) were 115 and 108 mg/L, respectively, which were allowed for discharge. Superior performance was achieved at 0.5 g-COD/L/day with a circulation rate of 8 L/h, and both COD and TN removal were >98%. Coulombic efficiency was 11% at 1.0 g-COD/L/day and at most 16% at 0.5 g-COD/L/day. COD removal decreased when the BES was removed, demonstrating that BES improved COD removal capability. In anodic biofilms, exoelectrogenic, facultative, nitrifying, and sulfate-reducing bacteria could coexist. Geobacter for current generation grew inside the biofilm, and bacteria in the middle and outer layers consumed oxygen and degraded organic matter and nitrogen. This BES-based TF reactor may be used for efficient and cost-effective COD and TN removal at high loads without excess sludge removal.

Dissemination of extended-spectrum-cephalosporin (ESC)-resistant Salmonella, especially extended-spectrum-ß-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Salmonella, is a concern worldwide. Here, we assessed Salmonella carriage by food workers in Japan to clarify the prevalence of ESC-resistant Salmonella harboring blaCTX-M We then characterized the genetic features, such as transposable elements, of blaCTX-M-harboring plasmids using whole-genome sequencing. A total of 145,220 stool samples were collected from food workers, including cooks and servers from several restaurants, as well as food factory workers, from January to October 2017. Isolated salmonellae were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing (disk diffusion method), and whole-genome sequencing was performed for Salmonella strains harboring blaCTX-M Overall, 164 Salmonella isolates (0.113%) were recovered from 164 samples, from which we estimated that at least 0.113% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.096 to 0.132%) of food workers may carry Salmonella Based on this estimation, 3,473 (95% CI = 2,962 to 4,047) individuals among the 3,075,330 Japanese food workers are likely to carry Salmonella Of the 158 culturable isolates, seven showed resistance to ESCs: three isolates harbored blaCMY-2 and produced AmpC ß-lactamase, while four ESBL-producing isolates harbored blaCTX-M-14 (n = 1, Salmonella enterica serovar Senftenberg) or blaCTX-M-15 (n = 3, S. enterica serovar Haardt). blaCTX-M-15 was chromosomally located in the S Haardt isolates, which also contained ISEcp1, while the S Senftenberg isolate contained an IncFIA(HI1)/IncHI1A/IncHI1B(R27) hybrid plasmid carrying blaCTX-M-14 along with ISEcp1 This study indicates that food workers may be a reservoir of ESBL-producing Salmonella and associated genes. Thus, these workers may contribute to the spread of blaCTX-M via plasmids or mobile genetic elements such as ISEcp1IMPORTANCE Antimicrobial-resistant Salmonella bacteria arise in farm environments through imprudent use of antimicrobials. Subsequently, these antimicrobial-resistant strains, such as extended-spectrum-ß-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Salmonella, may be transmitted to humans via food animal-derived products. Here, we examined Salmonella carriage among food handlers in Japan. Overall, 164 of 145,220 fecal samples (0.113%) were positive for Salmonella Among the 158 tested isolates, four were identified as ESBL-producing isolates carrying ESBL determinants blaCTX-M-15 or blaCTX-M-14 In all cases, the genes coexisted with ISEcp1, regardless of whether they were located on the chromosome or on a plasmid. Our findings suggest that food workers may be a reservoir of ESBL-producing strains and could contribute to the spread of resistance genes from farm-derived Salmonella to other bacterial species present in the human gut.

In eukaryotes, chromosome ends (telomeres) are tethered to the inner nuclear membrane. During the early stages of meiosis, telomeres move along the nuclear membrane and gather near the spindle-pole body, resulting in a bouquet-like arrangement of chromosomes. This chromosomal configuration appears to be widely conserved among eukaryotes, and is assumed to play an important role in the normal progression of meiosis, by mediating the proper pairing of homologous chromosomes. In fission yeast, the Bqt1-Bqt2 protein complex plays a key role in tethering the telomere to the inner nuclear membrane. However, the structural details of the complex required to clarify how telomeres are gathered near the spindle-pole body remain enigmatic. Previously, we devised a preparation procedure for the Schizosaccharomyces japonicus Bqt1-Bqt2 complex, in which a SUMO tag was fused to the N-terminus of the Bqt1 protein. This allowed us to purify the Bqt1-Bqt2 complex from the soluble fraction. In the present study, we found that a maltose-binding protein homolog, Athe_0614, served as a better fusion partner than the SUMO protein, resulting in the marked increase in the solubility of the Bqt1-Bqt2 complex. The Athe_0614 fusion partner may open up new avenues for X-ray crystallographic analyses of the structure of the Bqt1-Bqt2 complex.

Kudoa septempunctata, a myxosporean parasite infecting the trunk muscles of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), is reported to cause food poisoning in humans. The molecular mechanisms underlying the toxicity of K. septempunctata spores remain largely unknown. In the present study, we examine the molecular basis of such toxicity using DNA microarray analysis of K. septempunctata-inoculated human colon adenocarcinoma cells (Caco-2). We observed that the transepithelial resistance of the K. septempunctata-inoculated Caco-2 cell monolayers decreased markedly. DNA microarray analysis revealed that the mRNA expression profiles of control and inoculated cells clearly differed. Inflammatory and bacteria-related pathways, such as interleukin-8 (IL-8) production and MAPK/NF-kappa B pathway, were enriched. The concentrations of IL-8 and serotonin (5-HT) were higher in inoculated cells than in controls. Triglyceride (TG) and cholesterol accumulation are known to occur in the liver of rats fed a histidine-excess (5%) diet, but there are few studies reporting histochemical and molecular biological analyses of the rat liver. The aim of this study was to elucidate the molecular basis of this lipid-accumulation mechanism. Lipid accumulations, tissue section images, and gene expression levels were compared in the livers of rats fed a control or histidine-excess diet for 5 wk (n=8/group). Serum levels of TGs, free fatty acids, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, glucose, albumin, and the enzyme activities of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase were also analyzed. In the livers of rats fed a histidine-excess diet, histochemical analyses showed what appeared to be a preliminary stage of nonalcoholic fatty liver, characterized by lipid accumulation around the central vein area and minor fibrosis. However, there were no changes in serum TG or free fatty acid levels. Quantitative PCR analyses showed the up-regulation of FAT/CD36, which is related to the uptake of fatty acids into cells, and the downregulation of two apolipoprotein genes, ApoC3 and ApoE. The mRNA levels of PPARγ, LXRα, and AMPKα in the liver were also reduced by excess histidine intake. The results of this study suggest that steatosis caused by excess histidine intake may be the result of an imbalance between lipid transport from the liver and the uptake of free fatty acids into hepatocytes.

PURPOSE: To identify prognostic factors for revitrectomy in patients who underwent vitrectomy for complications with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) in multicentre study. METHODS: Consecutive 452 eyes of 452 patients with PDR undergoing 25-gauge microincision vitrectomy system (MIVS) in seven centres were retrospectivity reviewed. Preoperative ocular factors (baseline visual acuity [VA], vitreous haemorrhage [VH], tractional retinal detachment [TRD] and retinal photocoagulation), general factors (sex, age, diabetes duration, HbA1c level, hypertension, anti-coagulant medication and estimated glomerular filtration rate), surgical procedures (preoperative anti-vascular endothelial growth factor injection, internal limiting membrane peeling, combined cataract surgery, retinal break, and tamponade), postoperative complications for revitrectomy and postoperative VA at 6 months were evaluated. RESULTS: In the follow-up period of 6 months, revitrectomy was performed in 56 eyes (26.3%), and postoperative complications for revitrectomy were VH in 31 eyes (15%), TRD in 13 eyes (6.2%) and membrane proliferation in 12 eyes (5.2%). The mean LogMAR improvement from baseline to 6 months in revitrectomy group (0.39) was significantly worse than in single vitrectomy group (0.74). Diabetic duration, low baseline VA, less simple VH, TRD and air tamponade were statistical risk factors of revitrectomy, and logistic regression analysis identified low baseline VA and air tamponade also as prognostic factors of revitrectomy. CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that prognosis of VA was worse in PDR patients with revitrectomy and low baseline VA and air as the tamponade material were the potential prognostic factors of revitrectomy.

The benefit of pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling for tractional macular edema and diffuse nontractional macular edema in diabetic retinopathy has been reported. Although these studies had included various stages, use of conventional 20-gauge vitrectomy system, small number of cases, single-center study, and lack of retinal structure measurements were limitations. We compared one-year outcomes of 25-gauge vitrectomy for refractory diabetic macular edema with or without the tractional proliferative membrane in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) eyes and examined the prognostic factors for postoperative visual acuity. A total of consecutive 116 PDR eyes of 116 patients that underwent 25-gauge vitrectomy for tractional macular edema (TME group: 56 eyes) or nontractional macular edema (nTME group: 60 eyes) at six centers were retrospectively reviewed. Visual acuity (VA), central macular thickness (CMT), complications, and postoperative treatments before and 12 months after vitrectomy were compared. Mean VA improved significantly in each group (both P < 0.01), and mean CMT decreased significantly in each group (both P < 0.01). Thirteen eyes underwent additional vitrectomy, six eyes developed neovascular glaucoma, six eyes received intravitreal anti-VEGF injection, and thirteen eyes received subtenon triamcinolone acetonide injection. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that baseline VA and CMT in the TME group and kidney function in the nTME group were the predictable factors of the 12-month postoperative VA. Twenty-five-gauge vitrectomy effectively improved VA and macular structure both in TME and nTME groups. Baseline VA, CMT, and kidney function are important factors affecting postoperative VA.

Neovascular glaucoma (NVG) is a terminal severe complication in eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), and PDR eyes with vitreous hemorrhage (VH) which undergo vitrectomy may have higher risk of postoperative NVG. The incidence and the prognostic factor of postoperative NVG after 25-gauge vitrectomy with advanced surgical options remain unclear. We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 268 eyes of 268 consecutive PDR patients with VH who underwent 25-gauge vitrectomy and 12 months follow-up at seven centers. Preoperative ocular factors (visual acuity, tractional retinal detachment, panretinal photocoagulation [PRP]), demographics and clinical factors (sex, age, diabetic duration, HbA1c, hypertension, anticoagulant medication, and kidney function), surgical procedures, and postoperative complications were compared between patients who developed postoperative NVG (9.3%) and those who did not. NVG eyes was significantly younger (P = 0.026), had shorter diabetic duration (P = 0.022), higher HbA1c (P = 0.028), absence of PRP (P = 0.039) and higher frequency of postoperative VH (P = 0.0075) than non-NVG eyes. Logistic regression analysis identified postoperative VH (P = 0.014), shorter diabetic duration (P = 0.029), and no PRP (P = 0.028) as prognostic factors for postoperative NVG. This multicenter study indicates that younger age, uncontrolled diabetes, no PRP, and postoperative VH are risk factors of post-vitrectomy NVG.

A new myxosporean parasite, Myxodavisia jejuensis n. sp. (Myxozoa; Bivalvulida) is described from the urinary bladder of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus cultured on Jeju Island, Korea. Two long lateral appendages with whip-like extensions were attached to mature spores of triangular to semi-circular shape. The spores were measured at 13.1 ± 1.1 µm in length, 17.2 ± 1.0 µm in thickness, and 13.1 ± 1.0 µm in width. Two spherical polar capsules, with a diameter of 5.0 ± 0.4 µm, were observed on opposite sides in the middle of the spore. The suture line was straight or slightly sinuous on the middle of spores. The 18S rDNA from M. jejuensis n. sp. was used in BLAST and molecular phylogenetic analysis. The results demonstrated that M. jejuensis n. sp. was closest to Sinuolinea capsularis and that the infection site tropism was correlated with the phylogeny of marine myxosporeans. In addition, we designed specific primers to detect the 18S rDNA gene of M. jejuensis n. sp.; the results showed specific amplification in M. jejuensis n. sp. among the myxosporeans isolated from the urinary bladder of the cultured olive flounder.
