RESUMO

Low-temperature and elastic properties of the quasicrystal approximant GdCd6have been investigated by means of an ultrasonic measurement. Salient elastic anomalies were observed in the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the principal elastic constants, most probably being associated with the successive multiple magnetic phase transitions showing up at low temperatures. Based on the experimental data, a magnetic field vs temperature phase diagram was constructed. In a zero magnetic field, at least four phases appear to exist. However, the phase diagram both for the magnetic field applied forH//⟨100⟩andH//⟨110⟩is richer, and interestingly some phase boundaries correspond to the development of field-induced phases, leading to the intricate magnetic phase diagram possibly with multiple ordered phases. We discuss the elastic and electronic properties at low temperatures, and also the nature of the multiple magnetic phase transitions of GdCd6.

We investigated the fundamental physical properties in the ultra-quantum limit state of bismuth through measurements of magnetoresistance, magnetization, magnetostriction, and ultrasound attenuation in magnetic fields up to 60T. For magnetic fields applied along the bisectrix direction of a single crystal, a drastic sign reversal in magnetostriction was observed at approximately 39T, which could be ascribed to the complete valley polarization in the electron Fermi pockets. The application of magnetic fields along the binary direction presented an anomalous feature at approximately 50T only in the magnetoresistance. The emergence of a field-induced splitting of a valley was proposed as a possible origin of this anomaly.

With decreasing temperature, liquids generally freeze into a solid state, losing entropy in the process. However, exceptions to this trend exist, such as quantum liquids, which may remain unfrozen down to absolute zero owing to strong quantum entanglement effects that stabilize a disordered state with zero entropy. Examples of such liquids include Bose-Einstein condensation of cold atoms, superconductivity, quantum Hall state of electron systems, and quantum spin liquid state in the frustrated magnets. Moreover, recent studies have clarified the possibility of another exotic quantum liquid state based on the spin-orbital entanglement in FeSc2S4. To confirm this exotic ground state, experiments based on single-crystalline samples are essential. However, no such single-crystal study has been reported to date. Here, we report, to our knowledge, the first single-crystal study on the spin-orbital liquid candidate, 6H-Ba3CuSb2O9, and we have confirmed the absence of an orbital frozen state. In strongly correlated electron systems, orbital ordering usually appears at high temperatures in a process accompanied by a lattice deformation, called a static Jahn-Teller distortion. By combining synchrotron X-ray diffraction, electron spin resonance, Raman spectroscopy, and ultrasound measurements, we find that the static Jahn-Teller distortion is absent in the present material, which indicates that orbital ordering is suppressed down to the lowest temperatures measured. We discuss how such an unusual feature is realized with the help of spin degree of freedom, leading to a spin-orbital entangled quantum liquid state.

We verified the significance of 3-dimensional (3D) spectral mapping during atrial fibrillation (AFIB) using a 64-channel magnetocardiogram (MCG). The study consisted of 16 patients with valvular heart disease who had chronic AFIB. All 16 patients had surgical pulmonary vein (PV) isolation followed by valvular repair. We performed spectral mapping by fast Fourier transform analysis in nonaveraged 64-channel MCG data. The 3D spectral map was superimposed on a 3D heart polygon. At 1 year after surgical PV isolation for AFIB, followed by valve repair, 7 patients had restoration to sinus rhythm, and 9 patients remained in persistent AFIB. The preoperative mean 3D frequency of AFIB was 6.1 +/- 0.9 Hz in patients with restored sinus rhythm and 7.2 +/- 0.7 Hz in patients with sustained AFIB after PV isolation (P = .02). In addition, the preoperative 3D spectrum was distributed on the right side of the heart in patients with persistent AFIB. In conclusion, 3D spectral mapping using 64-channel MCG may represent a meaningful noninvasive strategy for patients with AFIB who receive an interventional procedure.

BACKGROUND: QT dispersion reveals heterogeneities in the repolarization time in the three-dimensional (3D) structure of the ventricular myocardium. In this study, we report on a 3D function map of recovery time (RT) dispersions as measured by 64-channel magnetocardiography (MCG). METHODS: MCG were simultaneously recorded in 29 controls and 21 patients with previous myocardial infarction (MI). The 3D current density was calculated from 64-channel MCG data in the Bz component using a space filter. The heart outline, reconstructed from the integrated the current density, revealed both the atrium and ventricle. The RT for the intervals between QRS onset and the time of the maximum dT/dt of T wave, and the peak to the end of the T wave (T(peak)-negative dT/dt) were automatically measured by means of a computer from 3D MCG data. The corrected RT (RTc) and corrected T(peak)-negative dT/dt were then calculated using Bazett's formula. The 3D RTc and the corrected T(peak)-negative dT/dt dispersion map were superimposed on the heart outline generated by MCG. RESULTS: The RTc was significantly longer for the MI group than in the control group (67+/-25 ms1/2 vs. 16+/-6 ms1/2) (p<0.0001). The corrected T(peak)-negative dT/dt dispersions in each patient was also significantly longer for the MI group than in the control group (35+/-27 ms1/2 vs. 10+/-5 ms1/2) (p<0.0001). Furthermore, the 3D RTc and T(peak)-negative dT/dt dispersion maps corresponded with the space location of MI, as defined by Tc-99m tetrofosmin myocardial imaging CONCLUSIONS: 3D RTc and T(peak)-negative dT/dt dispersion maps in the ST segment, obtained by 64-channel MCG may be used demonstrate the location of a myocardial injury and heterogeneities of repolarization.

BACKGROUND: Magnetocardiography (MCG) has the potential for collecting three-dimensional (3D) intracardiac electric information, because the magnetic field is unaffected by the shape of the lungs and torso. In the present study, we report on the generation of a 3D heart outline and conduction pathway by means of a current density map using a 64-channel SQUID system, and an evaluation of its significance in patients with atrial flutter (AFL) and atrial fibrillation (AFIB). METHODS: The subjects consisted of 20 healthy volunteers, and 3 patients with AFL and 4 patients with AFIB. A 64-channel MCG was recorded after digitization at 500 Hz, and a 3D current density was reconstructed from the magnetic fields using a space filter in conjunction with the minimum normalization method of Tikhonov. A 3D heart outline was generated from the integrated current density by the space filter. The conduction pathway was superimposed on a heart outline generated by a magnetic field. The heart outline was verified by the silhouette on the magnetic resonance (MR) images. An MCG was recorded pre- and post interventional therapy, and therapeutic efficacy was evaluated. RESULTS: The 3D heart outline of the atrium and ventricle corresponded to the silhouette of the right atrium and left ventricle, respectively, on an MR image. The serial conduction pathway of the QRS segment superimposed on the 3D heart outline map demonstrated the conduction pattern generated within the heart. The MCG revealed a counter-clockwise rotation in patients with AFL, and random micro-reentry in the case of AFIB. After interventional therapy, restoration of the sinus rhythm was verified in patients with both AFL and AFIB. CONCLUSIONS: A 64-channel MCG was used to evaluate the 3D heart outline and conduction pathway in patients with AFL and AFIB without the need for MR images.
