RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Both N6-methyladenosine (m6A) methylation and autophagy are considered relevant to the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC). However, a systematic exploration of the role of the com-bination of m6A methylation and autophagy in UC remains to be performed. AIM: To elucidate the autophagy-related genes of m6A with a diagnostic value for UC. METHODS: The correlation between m6A-related genes and autophagy-related genes (ARGs) was analyzed. Finally, gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was performed on the characteristic genes. Additionally, the expression levels of four characteristic genes were verified in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. RESULTS: GSEA indicated that BAG3, P4HB and TP53INP2 were involved in the inflammatory response and TNF-α signalling via nuclear factor kappa-B. Furthermore, polymerase chain reaction results showed significantly higher mRNA levels of BAG3 and P4HB and lower mRNA levels of FMR1 and TP53INP2 in the DSS group compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: This study identified four m6A-ARGs that predict the occurrence of UC, thus providing a scientific reference for further studies on the pathogenesis of UC.

RESUMO

Recent reports on identification of canine coronavirus (CCoV) in humans have emphasized the urgency to strengthen surveillance of animal CoVs. The fact that recombinations between CCoV with feline, porcine CoVs brought about new types of CoVs indicated that more attention should be paid to domestic animals like dogs, cats and pigs, and the CoVs they carried. However, there are about ten kinds of CoVs that infect above animals, and thus representative CoVs with zoonotic potentials were considered in this study. Multiplex RT-PCR against CCoV, Feline coronavirus (FCoV), porcine deltacoronavirus and porcine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus was developed to investigate the prevalence of CoVs from domestic dogs in Chengdu, Southwest China. Samples from a total of 117 dogs were collected from a veterinary hospital, and only CCoV (34.2%, 40/117) was detected. Therefore, this study focused on CCoV and its characteristics of S, E, M, N and ORF3abc genes. Compared with CoVs that are capable of infecting humans, CCoV strains showed highest nucleotide identity with the novel canine-feline recombinant detected from humans (CCoV-Hupn-2018). Phylogenetic analysis based on S gene, CCoV strains were not only clustered with CCoV-II strains, but also closely related to FCoV-II strains ZJU1617 and SMU-CD59/2018. As for assembled ORF3abc, E, M, N sequences, CCoV strains had the closest relationship with CCoV-II (B203_GZ_2019, B135_JS_2018 and JS2103). What's more, specific amino acid variations were found, especially in S and N proteins, and some mutations were consistent with FCoV, TGEV strains. Altogether, this study provided a novel insight into the identification, diversification and evolution of CoVs from domestic dogs. It is of top priority to recognize zoonotic potential of CoVs, and continued comprehensive surveillance will help better understand the emergence, spreading, and ecology of animal CoVs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This retrospective cohort study aimed to investigate the association between red blood cell distribution width-to-albumin ratio (RAR) and in-hospital mortality in patients with sepsis and atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS: Data were obtained from the Medical Information Mart for the Intensive Care Database IV database version 1.0. Multivariate Cox regression models, curve-fitting, and Kaplan-Meier analyses were performed to determine the correlation between RAR and in-hospital mortality in patients with sepsis and AF. RESULTS: This study included 3042 patients with sepsis and AF. Confounding variables were adjusted for in the Multivariable Cox regression analysis models. RAR was independently associated with in-hospital mortality (hazard ratio 1.06; 95% confidence interval 1.03-1.08; p < 0.001). A linear relationship was found between the RAR and in-hospital mortality in patients with sepsis and AF. CONCLUSION: Elevated RAR levels are associated with increased in-hospital mortality in patients with sepsis and AF. Further research is required to confirm this association.

RESUMO

Membrane surface fouling is a key problem for water filtration. Compositing photocatalytic substances with a base membrane is a widely used strategy, but most of the membrane will be decomposed by photocatalysis. Herein, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) with extremely stable chemical properties is grafted with polyacrylic acid (PAA) and then modified with titanium dioxide (TiO2) to realize a self-cleaning TiO2-PAA-ePTFE filtration membrane. It can recover its flux under UV irradiation after fouling. With 20 rounds of self-cleaning, the membrane microstructure still remains intact. Moreover, in addition to retaining bovine serum albumin, TiO2 particles on the membrane surface are capable of absorbing small organic pollutants and degrading them. Thus, this membrane is potentially used as an anti-fouling membrane for water filtration.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary atelectasis is a common postoperative complication that may lead to intrapulmonary shunt, refractory hypoxemia, and respiratory distress. Recruitment maneuvers may relieve pulmonary atelectasis in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. We conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effectiveness of recruitment maneuvers in these patients. METHODS: We conducted a search in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and the ClinicalTrials.gov registry for trials published before March 2020. Individual effect sizes were standardized, and a meta-analysis was performed to calculate a pooled effect size by using random-effects models. Pulmonary atelectasis was assessed postoperatively. Secondary outcomes included hypoxic events, arterial oxygen tension (Pao2)/inspired oxygen fraction (Fio2) ratio, cardiac index, mean arterial pressure, and postoperative complications including pneumothorax and pneumonia. RESULTS: We reviewed 16 trials involving 1455 patients. Patients receiving recruitment maneuvers had a reduced incidence of pulmonary atelectasis (group with recruited pressure >40 cmH2O: risk ratio [RR], 0.20; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.07-0.57; group with recruited pressure <40 cmH2O: RR, 0.54; 95% CI, 0.33-0.89), reduced incidence of hypoxic events (RR, 0.23; 95% CI, 0.14-0.37), reduced incidence of pneumonia (RR, 0.42; 95% CI, 0.18-0.95), and improved Pao2/Fio2 ratio (weighted mean difference [WMD]; 58.87, 95% CI, 31.24-86.50) without disturbing the cardiac index (WMD, 0.22; 95% CI, -0.18 to 0.61) or mean arterial pressure (WMD, -0.30, 95% CI, -3.19 to 2.59) as compared with those who received conventional mechanical ventilation. The incidence of pneumothorax was nonsignificant between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Recruitment maneuvers may reduce postoperative pulmonary atelectasis, hypoxic events, and pneumonia and improve Pao2/Fio2 ratios without hemodynamic disturbance in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

RESUMO

Objective:Based on the modified ultracentrifugation method, the outer membrane vesicles (OMV) secreted by Klebsiella pneumoniae were rapidly separated, identified and quantified. Methods:Standard strains of classic Klebsiella Pneumoniae (cKP) purchased from the Clinical Laboratory Center of the National Health Commission, and hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKP) which was donated by Taiwan University were cultured in M9 basal media for 9 hours, and the OMV were extracted by modified ultracentrifugation. The shape and size of OMV were identified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), relative quantification by Stewart phospholipids analysis method. Two groups were compared using independent samples t test. Results:It was observed under the TEM that most of the OMV secreted by cKP and hvKP showed spherical vesicle structure and a small part were irregular. The diameter of OMV ranged from 20 to 250 nm, multiple vesicles could be seen in clusters. Relative quantification found that the number of OMV secreted by hvKP were more than cKP ( P<0.05). Conclusions:This study successfully achieved the extraction, identification and quantification of OMV from Klebsiella pneumoniae through the modified ultracentrifugation method, which provided a foundation for further study about the function and mechanism of OMV, and also provided new ideas for the treatment of bacteria. Based on the ultracentrifugation method, the OMV secreted by Klebsiella pneumoniae were rapidly separated and extracted, then identified and quantified.

RESUMO

AIM: To explore the intrinsic brain activity variations in retinal vein occlusion (RVO) subjects by using the voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) technique. METHODS: Twenty-one subjects with RVO and twenty-one healthy controls (HCs) were enlisted and underwent the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) examination. The spontaneous cerebrum activity variations were inspected using the DC technology. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was implemented to distinguish the DC values of RVOs from HCs. The relationships between DC signal of definite regions of interest and the clinical characteristics in RVO group were evaluated by Pearson's correlation analysis. RESULTS: RVOs showed notably higher DC signals in right superior parietal lobule, middle frontal gyrus and left precuneus, but decreased DC signals in left middle temporal gyrus and bilateral anterior cingulated (BAC) when comparing with HCs. The mean DC value of RVOs in the BAC were negatively correlated with the anxiety and depression scale. CONCLUSION: RVO is associated aberrant intrinsic brain activity patterns in several brain areas including pain-related as well as visual-related regions, which might assist to reveal the latent neural mechanisms.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND By using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we aimed to study the changes in potential brain function network activity in patients with acute eye pain. Also, by using the voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) method, we aimed to explore the relationship between spontaneous brain activity and the clinical features of patients with acute eye pain. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 15 patients with acute eye pain (5 women and 10 men; EP group) and 15 healthy controls (5 women and 10 men; HC group), were scanned by fMRI. The DC method was used to evaluate changes in spontaneous brain activity. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were analyzed, and Pearson correlation analysis was used to study the relationship between DC values and clinical manifestations in different regions of brain. RESULTS The area of the left limbic lobe showed a reduction in DC value in patients in the EP group. DC values were elevated in the left cerebellum posterior lobe, left inferior parietal lobule, left inferior temporal gyrus, left precuneus, and right cerebellum posterior lobe in the EP group. The visual analog scale value of the eyes in the EP group was negatively correlated with the left limbic lobe signal value and positively correlated with the left inferior parietal lobule signal value. Further, the scores of the hospital anxiety and depression scale and DC value of the left limbic lobe were negatively correlated. CONCLUSIONS Compared with the HC group, patients with acute eye pain had abnormal patterns of intrinsic brain activity in different brain regions, which may help reveal the potential neural mechanisms involved in eye pain.

RESUMO

To investigate whether multi-joint ultrasound (US) findings in patients with gouty arthritis could be used to distinguish between acute and chronic stages, we performed a retrospective study with 129 enrolled patients from the Rheumatology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu Medical College from September 1, 2018 to June 12, 2019. Patients with acute or non-acute gout were categorized using clinical data, and US imaging findings of the knees, ankles and first metatarsophalangeal joints were analyzed and compared between groups. Notably, we found that the most prevalent sign detected by US was the hyperechoic spot in the synovium, followed by arthrosynovitis, aggregates, double contour signs and tophi; meanwhile, bone erosions were the least common. Additionally, synovitis was more frequently detected in the acute joints of gouty arthritis (49%) compared with the non-acute joints (35%), whereas grade 1 or 2 blood flow classifications (97%), tophi and bone lesions were more often seen in the latter. Overall, our data suggest that multi-joint US scanning might be used to evaluate disease severity and discriminate between stages of gouty arthritis.

RESUMO

Knowledge about the impact of altitude and ethnicity on human oral microbiota is currently limited. To obtain the baseline of normal salivary microbiota, we analyzed the bacteria and fungi composition in Tibetan (HY group) and Han population (CD group) living at different altitudes by using next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology combined with PICRUSt and FUNGuild analyses. There were significant differences in oral microbiota composition between the two groups at phylum and genus levels. At the phylum level, the HY group had higher relative abundances of Firmicutes and Ascomycota, whereas the Bacteroidetes and Basidiomycota in the CD group were richer. These changes at the phylum level reflected different dominant genus compositions. Compared with the Han population, Candida, Fusarium, Zopfiella, Streptococcus, Veillonella and Rothia in Tibetan were higher. Surprisingly, the Zopfiella was found almost exclusively in the Tibetan. The PICRUSt and FUNGuild analysis also indicated that the function of the bacterial and fungal communities was altered between the two groups. In conclusion, our results suggest that there are significant differences in oral microbial structure and metabolic characteristics and trophic modes among Tibetan and Han population living at different altitudes. We first established the oral microbiota framework and represented a critical step for determining the diversity of oral microbiota in the Tibetan and Han population.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary atelectasis is a common postoperative complication that may lead to intrapulmonary shunt, refractory hypoxemia, and respiratory distress. Recruitment maneuvers may relieve pulmonary atelectasis in patients undergoing thoracic surgery. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of recruitment maneuvers in patients undergoing thoracic surgery. METHODS: We performed a literature search on the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases and the ClinicalTrials.gov registry for trials published before April 2021. We investigated postoperative pulmonary atelectasis incidence, intrapulmonary shunt fraction, static lung compliance, and mean arterial pressure. RESULTS: Six RCTs involving 526 patients were reviewed. Patients receiving a recruitment maneuver exhibited a significant decrease in intrapulmonary shunt fraction [weighted mean difference (WMD) - 0.02, 95% CI - 0.03 to - 0.01], improved static lung compliance (WMD 2.16; 95% CI 1.14-3.18), and PaO2/FIO2 ratio (WMD 31.31; 95% CI 12.11-50.52) without a significant difference in mean arterial pressure (WMD - 0.64; 95% CI - 4.92 to 3.64). The incidence pulmonary atelectasis favored recruitment maneuver group, but was not statistically significant (RR 0.55; 95% CI 0.27-1.12). CONCLUSIONS: Recruitment maneuvers may be a viable treatment for reducing intra-pulmonary shunt and improving static lung compliance and PaO2/FIO2 ratio without the disturbance of hemodynamics in patients undergoing thoracic surgery.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The basic pathophysiologic derangement of chronic kidney disease (CKD) begins with the loss of nephrons, leading to renal hemodynamic changes, eventually causing a reduced nephron count and renal hypoxia. The purpose of this study was to observe the renal oxygenation and renal hemodynamics of patients with CKD using blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and intrarenal Doppler ultrasonography (IDU). METHODS: The study enrolled 39 patients with stage 1-4 CKD and 19 healthy volunteers (HVs). Based on their estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), CKD patients were divided into 2 subgroups: a mild renal impairment (MI) group and a moderate to severe renal impairment (MSI) group. We monitored the participants' mean cortical T2* (COT2*) and mean medullary T2* (MET2*) values on BOLD-MRI, and measured the peak systolic velocities (PSVs), end-diastolic velocities (EDVs), renal resistive index (RI), and kidney length by IDU. We also recorded clinical indicators such as age, sex, body mass index (BMI), 24-h urinary protein (24-h Upr), serum creatinine (sCr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and eGFR. BOLD-MRI, IDU measurements, and the clinical indicators were compared in CKD patients and HVs by the analysis of variance and Kruskal-Wallis H test. Spearman's correlation was used to assess the relationship between data from BOLD-MRI and IDU and clinical indicators. RESULTS: The COT2* values were significantly higher than the MET2* values in the HV, MI, and MSI groups. COT2*, MET2*, EDV, PSV, and kidney length gradually decreased in the HV, MI, and MSI groups (all p < 0.05), whereas RI and 24-h Upr gradually increased (both p < 0.05). Spearman correlation analysis showed that COT2* and MET2* were significantly positively correlated with eGFR, PSV, EDV, and kidney length but were significantly negatively correlated with sCr, BUN, and 24-h Upr (all p < 0.05). There was no correlation observed between the COT2* and MET2* and the RI and BMI values. CONCLUSIONS: Renal oxygenation and blood flow velocities were found declined as the CKD stage progressed. The BOLD-MRI and IDU techniques may have clinical value by measuring intrarenal oxygenation and renal blood perfusion to judge the severity of renal damage in patients with CKD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To evaluate functional connection density (FCD) in patients with diabetic optic neuropathy (DON) using the resting functional connectivity (FC) method, and to determine the abnormal areas of brain activity. METHODS: Patients with DON (n=22; 10 male, 12 female) and healthy controls (HCs; n=22; 10 male, 12 female) were included in the study. The basic characteristics of the groups were matched. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was conducted with participants at rest, and long- and short-range FCD (long FCD and IFCD, respectively) were measured. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was also conducted to determine whether DON and HC participants could be distinguished using fMRI indicators. RESULTS: Compared with HCs, the long FCD values of the left lingual gyrus, right lingual gyrus, right fusiform gyrus, and medial and lateral cingulate gyri were decreased in patients with DON. Further, the IFCD values of the left superior temporal gyrus, left inferior temporal gyrus, right inferior temporal gyrus, left cerebellar area 8, and right cerebellar Crus2 area were higher in patients with DON than in the HCs. CONCLUSIONS: DON is associated with abnormal spontaneous brain activity. Our findings contribute to elucidating the mechanisms underlying the neuropathology of DON, and provide direction for further clinical research.

RESUMO

Quick capacity loss due to the polysulfide shuttle effects and poor rate performance caused by low conductivity of sulfur have always been obstacles to the commercial application of lithium sulfur batteries. Herein, an in-situ doped hierarchical porous biochar materials with high electron-ion conductivity and adjustable three-dimensional (3D) macro-meso-micropore is prepared successfully. Due to its unique physical structure, the resulting material has a specific surface area of 2124.9 m2 g-1 and a cumulative pore volume of 1.19 cm3 g-1 . The presence of micropores can effectively physically adsorb polysulfides and mesopores ensure the accessibility of lithium ions and active sites and give the porous carbon material a high specific surface area. The large pores provide channels for the storage of electrolyte and the transmission of ions on the surface of the substrate. The combined effect of these three kinds of pores and the N doping formed in-situ can effectively promote the cycle and rate performance of the battery. Therefore, prepared cathode can still reach a reversible discharge capacity of 616 mAh g-1 at a rate of 5 C. After 400 charge-discharge cycles at 1 C, the reversible capacity is maintained at 510.0 mAh g-1 . This new strategy has provided a new approach to the research and industrial-scale production of adjustable hierarchical porous biochar materials.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Middle-age patients with retinal detachment (RD) exhibit a loss of visual information, and previous studies of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have demonstrated abnormal spontaneous activity in the RD brain. Therefore, this study assessed changes in local functional connectivity density (lFCD) and long-range functional connectivity density (longFCD) in middle-age RD patients during resting-state FC. METHODS: In total, 32 middle-age patients with RD (18 men and 14 women), and 32 age-, sex-, and education-matched normal controls (NCs) (18 men and 14 women) were recruited and underwent functional magnetic resonance examination in the resting state. Two-sample t test was performed to compare lFCD and longFCD between groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to distinguish middle-age RD patients from NCs. RESULTS: Compared with NCs, middle-age RD patients demonstrated increased lFCD values in the right inferior temporal gyrus, and increased longFCD values in the bilateral inferior frontal gyri, left superior and middle frontal gyrus, bilateral inferior temporal gyri, and left cerebellum posterior lobe. Middle-age RD patient exhibited decreased lFCD values in the left cuneus, right lingual gyrus, and left middle frontal gyrus. They also had lower longFCD values in the left lingual gyrus and left inferior occipital gyrus. ROC curve analysis showed excellent accuracy of the specific areas under the curve. CONCLUSION: Our results reveal that middle-age RD patients exhibited variations of binarized lFCD and longFCD in specific brain areas, which provides insight into the pathological mechanism of RD patients with acute visual loss.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Despite the establishment of the links between ulcerative colitis (UC) and depression, between UC and gut microbiota, few correlations between depression and gut microbiota have yet been demonstrated especially in ulcerative colitis patients. The objective of our study was therefore to determine whether the comorbidity of depressive disorder in ulcerative colitis patients correlate with alterations in the gut microbiota and to identify the specific microbiota signatures associated with depression.Between March 2017 and February 2018, 31 healthy volunteers, 31 UC patients without depression, and 31 UC patients with depression from Longhua Hospital were enrolled. Clinical data and fecal samples were collected for each patient. Fecal bacteria were identified using 16 s rRNA sequencing. We compared microbial composition among the 3 groups using bioinformatic analysis.Patients with UC with depression had higher disease severity (P < .05). The UC without depression group had moderate reduction of microbial abundance and uniformity compared to the control group. The UC with depression group had the lowest microbial abundance. With regard to the vital bacteria in the microbiota-gut-brain axis, patients with UC and depression had the lowest abundance of Firmicutes, Clostridia, and Clostridiales but the highest abundance of Proteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, and Bacilli. The presence of depression in UC patients presented significant differences in the composition of gut microbiota compared with UC patients without depression, with increased abundance of Firmicutes and reduced abundance of Proteobacteria.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The outcomes of patients with postmenopausal breast cancer(PBC) can be improved through the early detection of intraocular metastases(IOMs). In this study, we investigated patients with PBC, and compared those with IOMs with those with non-intraocular metastases(NIOMs) in terms of blood lipid levels, and then differentiated the risk factors associated with IOMs. METHODS: Student's t-test and a chi-square test were used to discriminate between the IOMs and NIOMs groups. After establishing a Poisson regression model to analyze risk factors, we plotted receiver operating characteristic curves(ROC) to assess the quality of risk factors predicting IOMs. RESULTS: The incidence of IOMs in PBC was 1.16%. There was no significant difference in terms of histopathology between the 2 groups. The levels of total cholesterol (TC), apolipoprotein A1(APOA1) and low-density lipoprotein(LDL) in IOMs were significantly lower than in NIOMs groups. Poisson regression suggested that low levels of APOA1 and LDL were risk factors for IOMs (P = 0.002 and P < 0.001, respectively). ROC curve analysis demonstrated that the cut-off values of APOA1 and LDL were 1.025 g/L and 2.415 mmol/L. The highest prediction accuracy for IOMs involved the combination of APOA1 and LDL (AUC = 0.881, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our research demonstrates that low levels of APOA1 and LDL efficiently predict IOMs in PBC as risk factors, and the combination of APOA1 and LDL was more predictive than single factors.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to explore the underlying functional network brain activity changes of patients in middle-aged with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and the relationships with clinical features such as depression scale and visual functioning using voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) method. METHODS: We included 16 patients with RP (11 men, 5 women) and 16 healthy controls (HCs; 11 men, 5 women). Participants were matched in terms of age, weight, gender and handedness (age and weight between the two groups were compared using independent sample t-tests, gender and handedness were compared using chi-square test). We use the voxel-wise DC method to assess spontaneous brain activity. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to distinguish between RP patients and HCs. Correlation analysis was used to examine the relationships between mean DC values in various brain regions and clinical features (such as depression scale and visual functioning) in RP patients. RESULTS: Compared with HCs, the DC values of patients with RP were reduced in the right medial frontal gyrus, bilateral cuneus, bilateral precuneus, and bilateral superior frontal gyrus, and increased in the right cerebellum posterior lobe, left inferior temporal gyrus, and right fusiform gyrus. The mean DC values in the bilateral cuneus negatively correlated with the depression scale, and those in the bilateral precuneus positively correlated with the Visual Functioning Questionnaire-25. CONCLUSIONS: Middle-aged patients with RP exhibit abnormal brain network activity in various brain regions, and this may underlie the pathological mechanism of RP.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to examine the post-operative ventilation distribution changes in cardiac surgical patients after traditional full sternotomy (FS) or minimally invasive thoracotomy (MIT). METHODS: A total of 40 patients scheduled for FS with two-lung ventilation or MIT with one-lung ventilation were included. Ventilation distribution was measured with electrical impedance tomography (EIT) at T1, before surgery; T2, after surgery in ICU before weaning; T3, 24 hours after extubation. EIT-based parameters were calculated to assess the ventilation distribution, including the left-to-right lung ratio, ventral-to-dorsal ratio, and the global inhomogeneity index. RESULTS: The global inhomogeneity index increased at T2 and T3 compared to T1 in all patients but only statistically significant in patients with MIT (FS, P = .06; MIT, P < .01). Notable decrease in the dorsal regions (FS) or in the non-ventilated side (MIT) was observed at T2. Ventilation distribution was partially improved at T3 but huge variations of recovery progresses were found in all patients regardless of the surgery types. Subgroup analysis indicated that operation duration was significantly lower in the MIT group (240 ± 40 in FS vs 205 ± 90 minutes in MIT, median ± interquartile range, P < .05) but the incidence of atrial fibrillation/flutter was significantly higher (5% in FS vs 50% in MIT, P < .01). Other exploratory outcomes showed no statistical differences. CONCLUSIONS: Ventilation distribution was impaired after cardiac surgery. The recovery process of ventilation homogeneity was strongly depending on individuals so that MIT was not always superior in this aspect. EIT may help to identify the patients requiring further care after surgery.
