Aim: To compare the diagnostic values by using transthoracic echocardiography (ECHO) and multi-slice spiral CT coronary angiography (CTCA) for identifying coronary artery thrombosis in children with Kawasaki disease (KD). Methods: Total 97 KD children with coronary artery dilation complications in our hospital from June 2012 to December 2020 were included in the study. CTCA and ECHO were performed after over 1 month of illness. Results: Coronary artery thrombosis was found in 14 out of 97 patients. Among them, 10 were identified as positive by CTCA, 9 were identified as positive by ECHO, and 5 were identified as positive by both CTCA and ECHO. Conclusion: Both CTCA and ECHO can be used to diagnose coronary artery thrombosis. ECHO has advantage in identifying low-density thrombus, and CTCA is better for the clot in distal coronary artery. They can complement each other.

Green leaf volatiles (GLVs) are released by plants when they encounter biotic stress, but their functions in the response to abiotic stress have not been determined. We have previously shown that exogenous application of (Z)-3-hexeny-1-yl acetate (Z-3-HAC), a kind of GLV, could alleviate salt stress in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) seedlings; however, notably little is known concerning the transcription regulation mechanisms of Z-3-HAC. In this study, we comprehensively characterized the transcriptomes and physiological indices of peanut seedlings exposed to Z-3-HAC and/or salt stress. Analysis of transcriptome data showed that 1420 genes were upregulated in the seedlings primed with Z-3-HAC under salt stress compared with the non-primed treatment. Interestingly, these genes were significantly enriched in the photosynthetic and ascorbate metabolism-related categories, as well as several plant hormone metabolism pathways. The physiological data revealed that Z-3-HAC significantly increased the net photosynthetic rate, SPAD value, plant height and shoot biomass compared with the non-primed peanut seedlings under salt stress. A significantly higher ratio of K+ :Na+ , reduced-to-oxidized glutathione (GSH:GSSG), and ascorbate-to-dehydroascorbate (AsA:DHA) were also observed for the plants primed with Z-3-HAC compared with the salt stress control. Meanwhile, Z-3-HAC significantly increased the activity of enzymes in the AsA-GSH cycle. Taken together, these results highlight the importance of Z-3-HAC in protecting peanut seedlings against salt stress by affecting photosynthesis, cellular redox homeostasis, K+ :Na+ homeostasis, and phytohormones.

Accumulative researches have demonstrated the critical functions of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the progression of malignant tumors, including bladder cancer (BC). Our previous studies showed that lnc-DILC was an important tumor suppressor gene in both liver cancer and colorectal cancer. However, the role of lnc-DILC in BC remains to be elucidated. In the present study, we for first found that lnc-DILC was downregulated in human bladder cancer tissues. Lnc-DILC overexpression suppressed the proliferation, metastasis and expansion of bladder cancer stem cells (CSCs). Mechanically, lnc-DILC suppressed BC cells progression via STAT3 pathway. Special STAT3 inhibitor S3I-201 diminished the discrepancy of growth, metastasis and self-renewal ability between lnc-DILC-overexpression BC cells and their control cells, which further confirmed that STAT3 was acquired for lnc-DILC-disrupted BC cell growth, metastasis and self-renewal. Taken together, our results suggest that lnc-DILC is a novel bladder tumor suppressor and indicate that lnc-DILC inhibits BC progression via inactivating STAT3 signaling.

Scientists are increasingly aware that heavy metal contamination in soils, especially in farmland ecosystems, can negatively affect human health and alter the bacterial community that plays a critical role in plant growth and heavy metal accumulation. The goal of the present paper was to uncover how various heavy metals and non-metallic elements affect human health and bacterial diversity in cornfields and to explore the contribution of soil bacteria to heavy metal accumulation in crops. Soil samples were collected from five counties in Shandong Province, China, where abnormally high levels of heavy metals and metalloids were caused by mining and heavy industry. We calculated a hazard quotient (HQ) to evaluate the health risk these heavy metals cause and analyzed the soil bacterial community using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The HQ results showed that As posed the greatest threat to human health followed by Pb although concentrations of all metals did not reach the health risk threshold. Meanwhile, principal component analysis (PCA) and redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed soil bacterial richness was significantly influenced by As, Ni, and Cr as well as pH and phosphorus, but not by the species diversity of aboveground weeds. The most abundant bacteria in our study region were heavy metal tolerant groups, specifically Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria. Moreover, correlation analysis suggested that Actinobacteria might reduce the phytoaccumulation of Cr, Cu, Zn, and Hg in corn, while Proteobacteria might weaken phytoaccumulation of Pb, Ni, As, and Cd. Our results verified that heavy metals play an important role in shaping the soil bacterial community. Using native bacteria in farmland provides a potential biological strategy for reducing the health risk posed by heavy metals related to food consumption.

Cinnamaldehyde (CA) is natural plant-derived compound that has been highly appreciated for its medicinal properties. However, little information is known about the regulation of plant intrinsic physiology by CA. To address these gaps, physiological, histochemical, and biochemical approaches were applied to investigate CA-facilitated cadmium (Cd) tolerance in the roots of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) seedlings. Treatment with CdCl2 at 20 µM for 72 h resulted in the significant decrease in root elongation by 40.39% as compared to control. CA alleviated Cd-inhibited root elongation in dose- and time-dependent manners. The addition of CA at 20 µM induced significant increase in root elongation by 42.58% as compared to Cd treatment alone. CA abolished Cd-induced ROS (reactive oxygen species) accumulation, lipid peroxidation, loss of membrane integrity, cell death, and free Cd2+ accumulation in roots. CA blocked the Cd-induced increase in the endogenous H2S level through the down-regulation of d-cysteine desulfhydrase (DCD) expression. H2S scavenger hypotaurine (HT) or potent H2S-biosynthetic inhibitor dl-propargylglicine (PAG) were able mimic the action of CA on the blockade of Cd-induced H2S accumulation, cell death, and growth inhibition. Enhancement of the endogenous H2S level with NaHS (H2S donor) abrogated all the beneficial capabilities of CA, HT, and PAG. Collectively, these results suggest that CA has great potential to confer plant tolerance against Cd stress, which is closely associated with its capability to inhibit Cd-induced H2S production. This study not only provides evidences for the regulation of plant physiology by CA but also sheds new light on the cross-talk between CA and H2S in physiological modulations.

AIM: To determine the prevalence, demographic, clinical and histopathologic features of heterotopic gastric mucosa (HGM) in Chinese patients. METHODS: Patients referred to three endoscopy units were enrolled in this study. The macroscopic characteristics of HGM were documented. Biopsies were obtained and observed using hematoxylin and eosin staining. Helicobacter pylori colonization was examined by Whartin-Starry staining. RESULTS: HGM was observed in 420 Chinese patients, yielding a prevalence of 0.4%. The majority of patients had a single patch (300/420; 71.4%), while the remainder had two (84/420; 20%) or multiple patches (36/420; 8.6%). The size of the patches and the distance from the patch to the frontal incisor teeth varied significantly. The large majority of HGM patches were flat (393/420; 93.6%), whereas the remaining patches were slightly elevated. The primary histological characteristic was fundic-type (216/420; 51.4%) within the HGM patch, and antral- (43/420; 10.2%) and transitional-type (65/420; 15.5%) mucosa were also observed. The prevalence of intestinal metaplasia was 3.1% (13/420) and the prevalence of dysplasia was 1.4% (6/420), indicating the necessity for endoscopic follow-up in patients with HGM. Esophageal and extraesophageal complaints were also observed in patients with HGM. Dysphagia and epigastric discomfort (odds ratios: 6.836 and 115.826, respectively; Ps < 0.05) were independent risk factors for HGM. CONCLUSION: Clinical complaints should be considered to improve the detection rate of HMG. The prevalence of intestinal metaplasia and dysplasia also indicates a need for endoscopic follow-up.

A pair primer was designed by Oligo 6.0 according to the pilA gene sequence of E. coli isolated from human in GenBank. The pilA Gene was obtained by PCR with the enteropathogenic E. coli isolated from ducks as template and cloned into pMD18-T vector. It was identified by PCR, restriction endonuclease analysis, DNA sequencing and then subcloned into BamH I/Hind III site of prokaryotic expression vector pET-32a(+) and recombinant expression plasmid pET-32a-pilA was constructed successfully. The plasmid was transformed into Eschericha coli BL21 (DE3) and 36kD pilA recombinant protein was expressed be induced with IPTG. The protein was purified by Ni-agarose affinity chromatograghy and was prepared as vaccine with Freund' s adjuvant. The ducklings were immunized with the vaccine at 1 and 8-day-old respectively. Two weeks after last immunized, the antibody titer of duck serum was detected by ELISA and the ducklings were challenged with 10(9) PFU enteropathogenic E. coli GH1.2 virulent strain. The immunoprotection effect of pilA recombinant protein vaccine was evaluated according to the mortality, re-isolated rate of E. coli, and grades of pathological changes. The results show that the antibody titer are 1:12800, but 1:200 were detected from ducklings immunized with homologous whole cells E. coli inactivated vaccine. The mortality, re-isolated rate of E. coli, degree of pathological changes of immunized ducklings is lower than that of the control ducklings and showed significant or extremely significant differences (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05), but non-significant difference compared to the ducklings which immunized with homologous whole cells E. coli inactivated vaccine (P > 0.05). The results show that pilA recombinant protein has some immunoprotection effect with the challenging of virulent strains of E. coli GH1.2.
