RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2 (MABC-2) is a popular assessment of children's motor skills in both Western and Eastern countries. Since children's motor skills are strongly influenced by the sociocultural context, it is essential to specifically examine the applicability of the MABC-2 in different cultures. The performance on the MABC-2 age band 1 of children in Taiwan was compared with the standardized sample from the United Kingdom. The sex differences in the performance on the MABC-2 were also investigated. METHODS: Children aged 3 to 6 years were recruited and categorized into 4 age groups. The researchers assessed the children with the MABC-2 age band 1, containing 8 tasks categorized into 3 components: manual dexterity, aiming and catching, and balance. Z tests and effect sizes were used to examine the cultural differences in the 3 components and in the total scale of the MABC-2. Independent t tests were used to check for sex differences in the MABC-2. RESULTS: Data on 615 children with a mean age of 4.95 years (SD = 0.97) were collected. Clinically significant differences (effect size > 0.5) were found in 2 components and the total scale of the MABC-2 across most age groups. Children in Taiwan performed better on manual dexterity, balance, and the total scale. Marginally clinically significant differences (absolute effect size > 0.4) were found in the aiming and catching component for the children aged 3 and 6 years old; children in Taiwan scored lower on aiming and catching than did children in the United Kingdom. Girls had significantly higher scores on manual dexterity, balance, and the total scale, while boys had significantly higher scores on aiming and catching. CONCLUSIONS: Cultural and sex differences exist in the MABC-2. Constructing a norm for children in Taiwan of different sex and modification of the items are suggested for application of the MABC-2 in Taiwan.

IMPORTANCE: Performance of coloring, origami, and copying activities reflects children's visual-motor integration (VMI), but the levels of association remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To use artificial intelligence (AI) to investigate associations of performance of coloring, origami, and copying activities with VMI. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Kindergartens. PARTICIPANTS: A sample of 370 children (182 boys and 188 girls) in the second and third years of kindergarten. OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Beery-Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration, 6th Edition (VMI-6). RESULTS: Data for preschool children from an ongoing project were retrieved. AI models were trained to use photographs of activity products to predict total score on the VMI-6. R2 values were used to identify the variance in VMI-6 standardized scores explained by predicted scores from the activities. That is, R2 values reflected associations between activity performance and VMI. The R2 values for the combination of origami and copying were the largest (.390-.577). These R2 values were larger than those for each individual activity (.340-.473) and similar to those for the combination of all three activities (.400-.550). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Because moderate R2 values were found between performance of the three activity products and VMI, the three activities have high potential for use in identifying children's level of VMI or as teaching materials to facilitate the development of children's VMI. Furthermore, combining origami and copying activities is recommended for teachers and clinicians who need to address VMI. What This Article Adds: A combination of origami and copying activities had the strongest associations with children's VMI. Teachers and clinicians can use these two activities when addressing VMI development among preschool children.

BACKGROUND: The Caregiver-Teacher Report Form of the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 1½-5 (C-TRF) is a widely used checklist to identify emotional and behavioral problems in preschoolers. However, the 100-item C-TRF restricts its utility. AIMS: This study aimed to develop a machine learning-based short-form of the C-TRF (C-TRF-ML). METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Three steps were executed. First, we split the data into three datasets in a ratio of 3:1:1 for training, validation, and cross-validation, respectively. Second, we selected a shortened item set and trained a scoring algorithm using joint learning for classification and regression using the training dataset. Then, we evaluated the similarity of scores between the C-TRF-ML and the C-TRF by r-squared and weighted kappa values using the validation dataset. Third, we cross-validated the C-TRF-ML by calculating the r-squared and weighted kappa values using the cross-validation dataset. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS: Data of 363 children were analyzed. Thirty-six items of the C-TRF were retained. The r-squared values of C-TRF-ML scores were 0.86-0.96 in the cross-validation dataset. Weighted kappa values of the syndrome/problem grading were 0.72-0.94 in the cross-validation dataset. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: The C-TRF-ML had about 60 % fewer items than the C-TRF but yielded comparable scores with the C-TRF.

BACKGROUND: Children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) with mild and moderate symptom levels have significant differences in applied theory of mind (ToM) competence. However, their mediators of applied ToM competence have not been documented. AIMS: This study aimed to identify the mediators of applied ToM competence in these two clinically distinct groups. METHODS: A total of 163 children with ASD aged 3-12 years old (88 and 75 children respectively in the mild and moderate groups) and their caregivers participated in this study. Data of children's verbal comprehension, explicit ToM knowledge and applied ToM competence were collected and then analyzed using mediation analysis. RESULTS: The results of mediation analysis showed that verbal comprehension (95% confidence interval [CI] of indirect effect: 0.02 - 0.19) and explicit ToM knowledge (95% CI of indirect effect: 0.01 - 0.07) were the mediators of applied ToM competence in children with mild and those with moderate symptoms, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Our findings demonstrate that the mediators of applied ToM competence differ by symptom level in children with ASD. Applied ToM competence and the mediators should be assessed for designing tailored and effective intervention plans for these children according to their symptom level.

IMPORTANCE: Theory of mind (ToM) and executive function (EF) are often used to explain social interaction deficits in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but no behavioral studies have specifically examined their relationship. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the cognitive correlates of social interaction in daily contexts by ToM as well as cool and hot EFs among children with ASD. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Teaching hospitals, clinics, and developmental centers. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred thirty-two children with ASD and their caregivers. OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Measurements included the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Theory of Mind Task Battery, Dimensional Change Card Sort, and Children's Gambling Task, respectively, for children's daily social interaction, ToM, cool EF, and hot EF. Pearson's correlation analyses and three hierarchical regression models were conducted to identify the significant predictors of daily social interaction while controlling for verbal comprehension, measured using the Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI) of two Wechsler scales. RESULTS: ToM and cool EF were significant cognitive predictors of social interaction in daily contexts in children with ASD whose verbal comprehension was average or above average. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Our results suggest that ToM and cool EF are predictors of social interaction in daily contexts when considering children's verbal comprehension. Hot EF was not a significant predictor, contrary to our hypothesis. This behavioral study fills a research gap by enhancing the understanding of important cognitive correlates of social interaction in daily contexts for children with ASD to improve evaluation and intervention planning with this population. What This Article Adds: This study identified two cognitive predictors, ToM and cool EF, of social interaction in daily contexts for children with ASD. In addition to verbal comprehension, occupational therapy practitioners should assess ToM and cool EF to inform more comprehensive evaluation and intervention planning to improve social interaction in daily contexts for children with ASD.

AIM: This study determined whether higher screen time was associated with the development of 3-year-old children in Taiwan. It also examined whether differences would be found between television and other screen-based media in the probability of lagged development. METHODS: We examined 2139 children aged 3 years and their parents. The association between daily screen time was assessed using multiple logistic regression analysis. All the odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using the rates of lagged developmental achievement, with the group who used screens for less than 1 h a day as the reference category. Screen time comprised television and other screen-based media, such as smartphones, touch screens, computers and laptops. RESULTS: Children who used screens for more than 3 h per day had the lowest developmental scores and highest probabilities of lagged development. The children who used other screen-based media for more than 1 h per day had greater probabilities of lagged developmental achievements (ORs 1.85-4.98, all p < 0.05) than those who watched television for the same amount of time (OR 1.41-2.77, all p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Increased screen time was associated with higher probabilities of lagged developmental achievement in multiple development domains in 3-year-old children, particularly other screen-based media.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effects of different colors produced by light emitting diode (LED) on Brown Tsaiya ducks. METHODS: A total of 144 female Brown Tsaiya ducks were randomly allocated into three individual cage rearing chambers with different LED illumination colors as treatments. Three different treatments were: i) white color, ii) blue color, and iii) red color. The experiment periods were from ducks 21 to 49 weeks of age, determined traits included i) egg laying performance, ii) feed intake, iii) egg shell breaking strength, iv) egg shell thickness, v) egg Haugh unit, vi) egg weight, vii) serum Estradiol and Progesterone concentration, and viii) behavior pattern. RESULTS: The results indicated that when compared with white and blue color, red color could stimulate ducks sexual maturation and raised the egg laying performance. The red light group was also observed to have the highest feed intake among three treatments. The blue treatment had the lowest egg shell breaking strength and the highest egg weight among three treatments, nevertheless, no significant difference was observed among three treatments on egg shell thickness and egg Haugh unit. The red light group had higher serum estradiol concentration than the white and blue groups, but no significant difference among treatments on the serum Progesterone concentration was found. The results of behavior pattern indicated that red light group showed more feeding and less resting behavior compared to the blue light group. CONCLUSION: We found a potential of applying red light illumination in the indoor laying duck raising system with positive results on egg laying performance and acceptable egg weight, equivalent egg qualities compared to white and blue light.

Impaired executive function (EF), verbal comprehension, and theory of mind (ToM) may contribute to social difficulties in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The linkage between cool (cognitive) EF and ToM has been widely investigated, but the relations between hot (affective) EF and ToM remain largely unknown. The roles of cool EF and verbal comprehension have not been previously explored together to address hot EF-ToM relations. This study applied mediation analysis to investigate the mediating effects of cool EF and verbal comprehension to further elaborate the link between hot EF and ToM in children with ASD and average intellectual abilities. A total of 97 children with ASD aged from 6 to 12 years participated in this study. Children's cool EF, hot EF, and verbal comprehension were, respectively, measured with the computerized Dimensional Change Card Sort task, Children's Gambling Task, and the verbal comprehension index of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-fourth edition. Children's ToM was assessed with the Theory of Mind Task Battery. Partial correlation coefficients indicated that hot EF was significantly related with ToM with age controlled for. The results of the mediation analysis showed that cool EF and verbal comprehension mediated the linkage between hot EF and ToM. These findings highlight not only the connections between hot EF and ToM but also the importance of cool EF and verbal comprehension on hot EF-ToM relations in clinical assessments and interventions for school-aged children with ASD and average intellectual abilities. LAY SUMMARY: Relatively few studies have investigated the hot (affective) executive function (EF)-theory of mind (ToM) relations in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study discovered that hot EF was significantly related to ToM, while cool (cognitive) EF and verbal comprehension mediated the relationship between hot EF and ToM. Therefore, the influence of cool EF and verbal comprehension on hot EF-ToM relations should be considered in studies involving children with ASD. This study aimed to examine the association of dopamine-related genes with mental and motor development and the gene-environment interaction in preterm and term children. A total of 201 preterm and 111 term children were examined for their development at 6, 12, 18, 24, and 36 months and were genotyped for 15 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in dopamine-related genes (DRD2, DRD3, DAT1, COMT, and MAOA). An independent sample of 256 preterm children was used for replication. Since the developmental age trends of preterm children differed from those of term children, the analyses were stratified by prematurity. Among the 8 SNPs on the MAOA gene examined in the whole learning sample, the results of linkage disequilibrium analysis indicated that they were located in one block (all D' > 0.9), and rs2239448 was chosen as the tag (r2 > 0.85). In the analysis of individual SNPs in each dopamine-related gene, the tag SNP (rs2239448) in MAOA remained significantly associated with the mental scores of preterm children for the interaction with age trend (p < 0.0001; largest effect size of 0.65 at 24 months) after Bonferroni correction for multiple testing. Similar findings for rs2239448 were replicated in the independent sample (p = 0.026). However, none of the SNPs were associated with the motor scores of preterm children, and none were related to the mental or motor scores of term children. The genetic variants of the MAOA gene exert influence on mental development throughout early childhood for preterm, but not term, children.

BACKGROUND: Family-centered intervention for preterm infants has shown short- to medium-term developmental benefits; however, the neurological effects of intervention have rarely been explored. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to examine the effect of a family-centered intervention program (FCIP) on neurophysiological functions in preterm infants with very low birth weight (VLBW; birth weight of < 1500 g) in Taiwan, to compare the effect of the FCIP with that of a usual-care program (UCP), and to explore the FCIP-induced changes in neurobehavioral and neurophysiological functions. DESIGN: This was a multicenter, single-blind randomized controlled trial. SETTING: The study took place in 3 medical centers in northern and southern Taiwan. PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred fifty-one preterm infants with VLBW were included. INTERVENTION: The FCIP group received a family-centered intervention and the UCP group received standard care during hospitalization. MEASUREMENTS: Infants were assessed in terms of neurobehavioral performance using the Neonatal Neurobehavioral Examination-Chinese version, and their neurophysiological function was assessed using electroencephalography/event-related potentials during sleep and during an auditory oddball task during the neonatal period. RESULTS: The FCIP promoted more mature neurophysiological function than the UCP, including greater negative mean amplitudes of mismatch negativities in the left frontal region in the oddball task in all infants, lower intrahemispheric prefrontal-central coherence during sleep in infants who were small for gestational age, and higher interhemispheric frontal coherence during sleep in those who were appropriate for gestational age. Furthermore, interhemispheric coherence was positively associated with the total neurobehavioral score in preterm infants who were appropriate for gestational age (r = 0.20). LIMITATIONS: The fact that more parental adherence strategies were used in the FCIP group than in the UCP group might have favored the intervention effect in this study. CONCLUSIONS: Family-centered intervention facilitates short-term neurophysiological maturation in preterm infants with VLBW in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Family-centered care for preterm infants in Western societies has yielded short- to medium-term benefits. However, the intervention effects have rarely been validated in Eastern societies. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine whether a family-centered intervention program (FCIP) could improve the short-term medical and neurobehavioral outcomes in preterm infants with very low birth weight (VLBW; a birth weight of <1,500 g) in Taiwan over the outcomes seen with a usual care program (UCP). DESIGN: This was a multicenter, single-blind, randomized controlled trial study. SETTING: Three medical centers in northern and southern Taiwan were the locations for the study. PARTICIPANTS: The participants were 251 VLBW preterm infants without severe perinatal complications. INTERVENTION: The infants were randomly assigned to receive the FCIP or the UCP during hospitalization. MEASUREMENTS: Infant morbidities, feeding, growth, and neurobehavioral performance were evaluated during the neonatal period. Parental adherence to interventions was measured in the FCIP group. RESULTS: The FCIP promoted earlier full enteral feeding (ß = -1.1 weeks; 95% CI = -1.9 to -0.2 weeks) and hospital discharge (ß = -0.6 week; 95% CI = -1.1 to -0.1 weeks), greater weight gain (ß = 3.3 g/d; 95% CI = 0.1 to 6.6 g/d), and better neurobehavioral performance than the UCP (ß = 1.2 points; 95% CI = 0.2 to 2.3 points). Furthermore, a higher degree of parental motivation in interventions, goal attainment, and comprehensiveness of home activities was significantly associated with greater effects in infants' neurobehavioral performance and weight gain (r = .20-.31; all Ps < .05). LIMITATIONS: The findings may not be generalized to preterm infants with severe perinatal diseases and parents with a low level of interest in interventions. CONCLUSIONS: Family-centered care facilitated short-term medical and neurobehavioral outcomes in VLBW preterm infants in Taiwan; the effects were likely achieved through parental adherence to interventions. The designated strategies may be considered in a future launch of family-centered care in Taiwan.

This study examined the effects and mediators of a clinic-based intervention program (CBIP) and a home-based intervention program (HBIP) compared with usual care in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) preterm infants on developmental and behavioral outcomes at 24 months of age (corrected for prematurity). In this randomized controlled trial, VLBW preterm infants received either CBIP (n=57), HBIP (n=63), or usual care (n=58) from hospitalization to 12 months. At 12 months, infant emotional regulation was assessed using the toy-behind-barrier procedure and dyadic interaction was observed during free play. At 24 months, infant developmental and behavioral outcomes were assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development- 3rd edition and the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 1.5-5, respectively. Compared with infants under usual care, the CBIP-group infants showed higher cognitive composite scores (difference, 95% confidence interval (CI)=4.4, 0.8-7.9) and a lower rate of motor delay (odds ratio (OR), 95% CI=0.29, 0.08-0.99); the HBIP-group infants had lower sleep problem scores (difference, 95% CI=-1.4, -2.5 to -0.3) and a lower rate of internalizing problems at 24 months (OR, 95% CI=0.51, 0.28-0.93) (all p<.05). The CBIP's effect on cognitive outcome was attenuated when maternal or dyadic interactive behavior was considered; whereas the HBIP's effect on sleep and internalizing behavior was attenuated when duration of orientation to a toy or object was considered. In conclusions, interventions enhanced the cognitive, motor, and behavioral outcomes of VLBW preterm infants. The effects on cognitive and behavioral outcomes might be mediated by early-improved mother-infant interaction and infant emotional regulation, respectively.

The Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development - 3rd Edition (Bayley-III) was updated to enhance its usefulness for contemporary child developmental assessment. However, recent data in Western countries have implicated the overestimation of child development by the new instrument. This study aimed to investigate the psychometric features of the Bayley-III for term and preterm infants in Taiwan. Forty-seven term infants and 167 preterm infants were prospectively examined with the Bayley Scales of Infant Development - 2nd Edition (BSID-II) and the Bayley-III at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months of age (corrected for prematurity). The psychometric properties examined included reliability, construct validity, and known-group validity. The intra- and inter-rater reliabilities of the Bayley-III were good to excellent. The correlations between the BSID-II and Bayley-III raw scores were good to excellent for the cognitive and motor items and low to excellent for the language items. Term infants achieved higher composite scores than preterm infants on all of the Bayley-III scales (p<0.05). However, their rates of developmental delay were lower than the previously established prevalence estimates. The Bayley-III cut-off composite score was adjusted 10-20, 1-13, and 12-24 points higher than 70 for optimal prediction of cognitive, language, and motor delay, respectively, as defined by the BSID-II index score<70. The Bayley-III is a reliable instrument that extends its previous edition, especially in early language assessment. However, the upward adjustment of its cut-off score is recommended for the accurate identification of developmental delay in term and preterm Taiwanese infants.

PURPOSE: The objectives of this study were to translate and modify the Assessment of Mother-Infant Sensitivity scale into a Chinese version (modified AMIS-C) and to examine its reliability with preterm and term Taiwanese mother-infant dyads. METHOD: A total of 241 mother-infant pairs (179 preterm dyads and 62 term dyads) were prospectively recorded and their behaviour in feeding assessed using the modified AMIS-C when infants were at 4 and 6 months corrected age. A subset of the sample was used for interrater reliability testing, and the whole sample was used for assessment of internal consistency. RESULTS: Interrater reliability was high for the modified AMIS-C section and total scores (intra-class correlation coefficients=0.91-0.99). Internal consistency was good to excellent for the maternal section and total score (α=0.71-0.86) and was fair to good for the infant and dyadic section score (α=0.44-0.75). CONCLUSIONS: The modified AMIS-C scale is a clinically feasible and reliable instrument for assessing mother-infant interaction of preterm and term dyads during early infancy.

The present dual-task study used lateralized readiness potentials (LRPs) and behavioral measures to determine whether response activation for Task 1 and Task 2 can occur in parallel. We also examined whether task similarity (known as dimensional overlap) increases parallel central processing by making it difficult to selectively activate one task set. With dimensional overlap, the behavioral data replicated previous findings of backward correspondence effects: The Task 1 response was influenced by its compatibility with the Task 2 response. This finding suggests parallel response activation. The LRP data supported this conclusion: Task 2 response activation (indexed by the LRP) began before Task 1 central operations had finished. When there was no dimensional overlap, backward correspondence effects could not be measured, but the LRP data confirmed that parallel response activation still occurred. We argue that parallel response activation does occur, perhaps due to accidental activation of Task 2 mapping rules when the intention is to selectively execute Task 1 mapping rules.

We describe a protocol to examine various hypothetical models of task switching. This protocol analyzes two event-related potentials--lateralized readiness potential (LRP) and P300--to infer the roles of advance reconfiguration and carry-over effect on task switching. Participants performed two tasks in a random order. On each trial a task from the previous trial would be repeated, or the other task would be carried out. In one scenario, each stimulus was preceded either by an informative cue specifying which of the two tasks to perform (task-cueing conditions) or by a non-informative cue (no task-cueing conditions). The results showed that the mean reaction time and the stimulus-locked LRP intervals were longer for switch than for repeated trials. This suggested that task switching affected stage processes such as stimulus identification and response selection that occur before the onset of LRP. A further analysis of P300 confined the phenomenon of task switching to the processes that occur after the stimulus identification stage. Moreover, the results of additivity between task cueing and task switching suggested that the two factors affected a distinct stage of processing. A further implication would be that there was no switch-specific control process supporting the view of carry-over effect of switch cost.

Behavioral studies have documented that task switching incurs a longer reaction time than task repetition, and that advance cueing information about the forthcoming task reduces mean reaction time. The present study used P300 peak latency and two lateralized readiness potential (LRP) intervals--stimulus-locked and response-locked--to infer the loci of task switch and task-cueing effects and how they may interact in the basic task processing chain. Participants performed two tasks in a random order, so that on each trial they either repeated the task from the previous trial or switched to another task. In one condition, each stimulus was preceded by a cue informing participants which of the two tasks to perform; and in the other condition, each stimulus was preceded by a non-informative cue. Results indicated that both mean reaction times and the stimulus-locked LRP intervals were longer for switch than repeated trials, whereas P300 peak latencies and response-locked LRP intervals were identical for both trials. Similarly, both reaction times and the stimulus-locked LRP intervals were longer for no task-cueing than for task-cueing conditions, and P300 peak latencies and the response-locked LRP intervals were identical for both conditions. Finally, task switch and task-cueing effects appeared to be approximately additive, indicating the two factors influence distinct stage processes. We suggest that task switching resulted in prolongation of the response selection process by carry-over priming effects from the previous task, whereas task-cueing shortened the duration of the earlier process before response selection on both switch and repeated trials.
