RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Older adults with chronic diseases require long-term medication. However, due to lack of drug knowledge and hypomnesia, older adults with chronic diseases are prone to adverse drug events and increased medical costs. This study aimed to explore the status and influencing factors of home-based medication safety among community-dwelling older adults with chronic diseases in China to provide a basis for follow-up to conduct targeted health education. METHODS: Overall, 427 community-dwelling older adults with chronic diseases participated in this study. The Knowledge, Attitude, and Behaviour of Medication Safety among Older Adults with Chronic Diseases Questionnaire was used to assess their home-based medication safety. Multivariate linear regression was used to identify the factors influencing knowledge, attitude, and behaviour regarding medication safety. RESULTS: The average score of home-based medication safety among older adults with chronic diseases was 68.26 ± 8.96, indicating that they had a moderate grasp of medication safety. The scoring rate of each subscale was ranked from high to low as follows: behaviour (84.51%), knowledge (63.33%), and attitude (47.39%). Stepwise linear regression analysis showed that medication safety knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours were significantly associated with higher monthly income, adverse drug events, and taking medicine several times a day (p < 0.05). Additional influencing factors included having fewer chronic diseases, being female, higher educational attainment, taking medicines multiple kinds a day, better self-care ability, and non-hospitalisation for chronic illnesses (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Medical staff and community workers should pay attention to the drug safety of older adults with different characteristics and mobilise their enthusiasm for participation to improve their medication self-management ability. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Aging and empty-nesting in China are becoming more and more serious. Empty-nesters refer to older adults who were not living with their children, were living alone, or were living independently with their spouses. The mental health of empty-nesters needs timely attention. Satisfying the needs of older adults is primarily dependent on their children. Therefore, this study aimed to explore relationships between children-related factors, basic psychological need satisfaction, and multiple happiness among urban empty-nesters in China. METHODS: This study employs the Children-related Factors Questionnaire (CFQ), the Chinese Version of the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction (BPNS) Scale, and the Multiple Happiness Questionnaire (MHQ) to explore children-related factors, basic psychological need satisfaction and multiple happiness of urban empty-nesters in Fuzhou, China. A total of 507 samples were recruited by cluster sampling. RESULTS: Factors that affect BPNS include physical condition, the number of children, satisfaction with children's marriage, employment and income, retirement, gender, monthly personal income, and self-care have statistical differences (P < 0.05). Factors that affect MHQ include physical condition, the number of children, satisfaction with children's marriage, employment and income, gender, monthly personal income, living status, and self-care have statistical significances (P < 0.05). Structural equation model results showed that BPNS directly impacted MHQ, and factors about children indirectly affect MHQ through BPNS. The mediating role of BPNS in the relationship between children-related factors and MHQ. CONCLUSION: We should encourage our children to spend more time with the empty-nesters and communicate with them, which could help them relieve their negative emotions, satisfy their psychological needs, and improve their well-being. RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore urban empty-nesters using WeChat influencing factors and experiences of improving their quality of life. METHODS: 14 registered empty-nesters who had used WeChat in Fuzhou communities were recruited via convenience and purposive sampling methods with a qualitative descriptive design. Data were collected through individual, semi-structured, and face-to-face interviews and analyzed according to content analysis. RESULTS: The research revealed two primary themes with associated sub-themes: 1) influencing factors of using WeChat, and 2) quality of life experiences. DISCUSSIONS: Physiological factors, education level, and social support were using WeChat influencing factors by urban empty-nesters. WeChat is a convenient channel to improve empty-nesters' daily lives and a practical platform to meet empty-nesters' needs. Identifying these experiences could help older adults, especially empty-nesters' accept the era of intelligence and provide inspiration and reference for the increasingly normalized empty nest life.

RESUMO

Malignant tumors are currently seriously endangering human health and life, which has become one of the main causes of death in China. In modern Western medicine, they are mainly tackled by surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, but the death toll continues to rise year by year. At present, most of the anti-tumor chemotherapeutics used in clinical practice have toxic and side effects, affecting the anti-tumor efficacy and the conditions after treatment. Long-term medication will also induce drug resistance, making the good anti-tumor effect difficult to be achieved. With the vigorous development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it has played a crucial role in the fight against tumors. It is believed in TCM that "heat toxin" is one of the important causes of tumors. Therefore, the methods of clearing away heat and removing toxin are often emphasized in the treatment of tumors, and the resulting outcomes are satisfactory. There are many Chinese herbs and Chinese herbal compounds classified into the heat-clearing and toxin-removing type. Xihuangwan, a classic heat-clearing prescription, is composed of Calculus Bovis, Moschus, Olibanum, and Myrrh and has the effects of clearing away heat, removing toxin, eliminating edema, and dissipating mass, which is mainly used to treat carbuncle, pustule, scrofula, multiple abscess, and cancer caused by heat-toxin obstruction. In modern clinical practice, it has been employed in patients with lung cancer, breast cancer, gastric cancer, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, and other malignant tumors, especially during the advanced stage, as a routine or adjuvant treatment for alleviating their clinical symptoms and improving their quality of life. The main active components of Xihuangwan are pentacyclic triterpenoids (such as masticinic acids), volatile oils, steroids (like porcine deoxycholic acid), and bilirubin, which have been proved effective in anti-tumor. This paper reviewed the prescription source, pharmaceutical research, clinical anti-tumor research, and pharmacological mechanisms of Xihuangwan, which has provided reference for further expanding the anti-tumor applications of Xihuangwan and enhancing its secondary development.

RESUMO

Xiao Xumingtang in The Catalogue of Famous Ancient Classics (The First Batch) issued by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine is derived from the Important Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergency (Bei Ji Qian Jin Yao Fang) written by SUN Si-miao in the Tang dynasty. The present study systematically explored the origin, development, historical evolution, and clinical application of Xiao Xumingtang. As revealed by the results, Xiao Xumingtang as well as its analogues are primary prescriptions indicated for apoplexy before the Tang and Song dynasties and serve as the benchmark for the treatment of apoplexy. After the Song dynasty, due to the changes in the understanding of the pathogenesis of apoplexy and the limitations of the understanding of Xiao Xumingtang, its clinical application to apoplexy gradually decreased. In modern times, it has been re-recognized and applied, during which its clinical applications have undergone great changes. Its clinical applications are extensive, involving a variety of diseases related to the brain and nervous systems, such as stroke and its sequelae, peripheral facial paralysis, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, and other diseases related to the motor nervous system. Its primary indications are stroke and its sequelae, followed by peripheral facial paralysis. Other new indications are gradually found. This study is expected to provide references for the clinical application of Xiao Xumingtang and the transformation of new drugs.

RESUMO

Asymmetric Cu to In/Sn bonding structure with Ni ultrathin buffer layer (UBL) on Cu side is investigated in this research. The usage of Ni UBL slows down intermetallic compound (IMC) formation during bonding. Asymmetric structure can separate electrical isolation and solder process to avoid interaction, which can prevent IMC formation during polymer curing. A well-bonded asymmetric structure can be achieved with submicron solder by 150 °C bonding for 15 min. The structure shows the potential for low temperature hybrid bonding technology in high-density three-dimensional (3D) integration.

RESUMO

Terahertz (THz) polarizers with robust structure and high transmittance are demonstrated using 3D-integrated circuit (IC) technologies. A Cu wire-grid polarizer is sealed and well protected by Si-bonded wafers through a low-temperature eutectic bonding method. Deep reactive-ion etching is used to fabricate the anti-reflection (AR) layers on outward surfaces of bonded wafers. The extinction ratio and transmittance of polarizers are between 20 dB and 33 dB, and 13 dB and 27 dB for 10 µm and 20 µm pitch wire-grids, respectively, and 100% at central frequency, depending on frequency and AR layer thickness. The process of polarizer fabrication is simple from mature semiconductor manufacturing techniques that lead to high yield, low cost, and potential for THz applications.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the anti-tumor effect of 17XL strains of Plasmodium yoelii (P.y) infection on melanoma in mice. METHODS: B16F10 tumor cells were axillarilly injected into the right flank of 20 C57BL/6 mice to establish tumor-bearing mouse models. The next day, the mice were randomly divided into a P.y infection group and control group, 10 mice each group. Each mouse of the P.y infection group was intraperitoneally injected with 1×106 red blood cells including 20% P.y infection red blood cells, and each one of the control group were intraperitoneally injected with 1×106 normal red blood cells of C57BL/6 mice. The time of tumor formation of the mice in the two groups was observed and the tumor volumes were measured. RESULTS: The time of tumor formation in the P.y infection groupï¼» (11.30 ± 0.21) dï¼½was significantly later than that in the control group ï¼» (10.40 ± 0.22) dï¼½ (P < 0.05). From the tumors could be accurately measured to the study end point, both the tumors of mice in the two groups were growing, and the tumor volumes of mice in the P.y infection group were significantly less than those in the control group at each time point (all P < 0.05). The growth rate of tumors in the P.y infection group ï¼» (71.10 ± 6.29) mm3/dï¼½ was significantly slower than that in the control group ï¼» (302.80 ± 49.94) mm3/dï¼½ (P < 0.05), and the growth rates of tumors everyday in the P.y infection group were significantly slower than those in the control group (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The P.y infection can delay the occurrence of tumor and inhibit the growth of melanoma.

RESUMO

In the past 20 years, tumor immunotherapy has made a significant progress in tumor inhibition effects in both laboratory studies and clinical trails. In the immune response to tumor, effective antitumor immunity is induced during the tumor progress; long-term monitoring of the tumor would be achieved through the immune memory, reducing the possibility of tumor recurrence. In the immune treatment strategies, a focus is delivery of therapeutic immune regulators with nanocarriers. It has been demonstrated that due to the special physical and chemical properties, nanocarriers are easily internalized by immune cells, which regulate the immune responses and effectively induce anti-tumor immune cascade to achieve the tumor inhibition effect. In this paper, we will discuss the progress of nanocarrier-mediated antitumor immunotherapy in recent years.

RESUMO

In this study, we aim to develop a pH-sensitive transmembrane peptide TH (AGYLLGHINLHH LAHL(Aib)HHIL-Cys) modified liposome loaded with immunoadjuvant α-galactosylceramides (αGC-TH- Lip) and then investigate its effect on the immune function in tumor-bearing mice and its immune mechanism of action. The liposomes were prepared by membrane dispersion-probe ultrasound method and the size and zeta potential of αGC-TH-Lip were also characterized. The uptake of TH modified liposomes (TH-Lip) and polyethylene glycols modified liposomes (PEG-Lip) in DC2.4 cells in vitro were analyzed and the activation of natural killer T (NKT), natural killer (NK) and macrophages in tumor-bearing mice were also measured after systemic administrations of samples. Besides, the degree of maturation of dendritic cell (DC), the number of cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) and the differentiation of helper T cell (Th) were determined. The results showed the particle size of αGC-TH-Lip was about 117.9 nm and the zeta potential was about -8.37 mV under the neutral condition (pH 7.4) and the αGC-TH-Lip had high serum stability in 50% fetal bovine serum. The uptake of TH-Lip in DC2.4 cells in vitro was 1.48 times higher than that of PEG-Lip. After systemic administrations of the samples, the numbers of NKT cells, NK cells and macrophages in tumor-bearing mice were (0.43±0.048)%, (12.80±0.50)% and (3.13±0.26)%, respectively, and the number of mature DCs and CTLs reached (2.30±0.22)% and (32.30±0.80)% separately, which was significantly different from the con-trol group. Finally, we discovered the αGC-TH-Lip had the strongest induction effect on the differentiation of Th1 cells, while barely promote the differentiation of Th2 cells. All the above results demonstrated that the αGC-TH-Lip can improve the immune the activity of mice, enhance the effect of α-galactosylceramide and promote the differentiation of lymphocytes toward the direction of cellular immunity, which consequently achieve a better anti-cancer immune activity.
