RESUMO

A diatomic circular polarizer based on a single-layered metasurface is proposed. This metasurface circular polarizer carries the controllable phase besides the desired circular dichroism, which is different from the existing circular polarizers. The diatoms contain two nanoholes equivalent to half-wave plates with a specified cross angle and a fixed phase difference. The alternative circular polarization transmission of this circular polarizer depends on the relative angular position of diatoms, and the controllable phase of this circular polarizer can be adjusted through rotating nanoholes. The generation of the optical vortex and holographic imaging verifies the polarization and phase manipulation of the diatomic circular polarizer. The numerical simulations and the experimental measurement give the powerful verification. Simple design, compact structure, and poly-functionality enable the wide applications of circular polarizer in integrated and polarized optics.

All crystals are not ideal, and many of their properties are often determined not by the regular arrangement of atoms, but by the irregular arrangement of crystal defects. Many properties of materials can be controlled effectively by proper use of solid defects. By substitution of NH4 + ion of a hexagonal perovskite structure (H2 dabco)(NH4 )(NO3 )3 (dabco=1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, 1) with Cd2+ ion, we obtained a new metal-vacancy compound (H2 dabco)2 Cd(H2 O)2 (NO3 )6 (2). It exhibits a ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition at 261 K. A comparison of the various-temperature single-crystal structures indicates that the coordination twist of Cd2+ ion leads to instability of the lattices and excellent ferroelectricity. These findings reveal that the vacancy can be utilized as an element to produce ferroelectricity and may start the chemistry of metal-vacancy coordination compounds. These findings reveals that the vacancy can be utilized as an effective means to tune the symmetry and produce ferroelectricity.

Sweet potato vine, the byproduct of sweet potato, has a high nutritional value. Silage is an effective solution for nutrient preservation. This article explored the effects of sweet potato vine silage (SPVS) supplementation on meat quality, antioxidant capacity and immune function in finishing pigs. One hundred and eighty finishing pigs (Berkshire × Licha Black) with a body weight of 74.54 ± 3.32 kg were randomly divided into three groups. The three groups were separately fed basal diet (Ctrl), Ctrl supplemented with 2.5% SPVS (LSPVS) or 5% SPVS (HSPVS) on a dry matter basis. Results showed that the eye muscle area in the LSPVS group was significantly increased. The carcass weight in the HSPVS was significantly reduced compared with Ctrl. For the meat quality, only cooking loss in both HSPVS and LSPVS was reduced while other indexes had no significant differences. For the antioxidant capacity, the hepatic level of glutathione (GSH) peroxidase (GSH-PX) was significantly upregulated in LSPVS but downregulated in HSPVS. In the serum, HSPVS decreased GSH level and increased GSH-PX level. HSPVS significantly reduced hepatic interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) levels and LSPVS significantly reduced IL-12 levels and increased IL-8 and IL-6 levels. Moreover, HSPVS and LSPVS promoted the secretion of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG in the serum. Our data showed that low-dose SPVS supplementation improved carcass traits and high-dose SPVS supplementation increased immune function in finishing pigs, which provides a new alternative to improve animal health.

RESUMO

We propose versatile integrated polarizers based on geometric metasurfaces. Metasurface polarizer consists of an L-shaped hole array etched on a silver film, and it can simultaneously generate several polarization states, including linear polarization, circular polarization, elliptical polarization, or even hybrid polarization. Meanwhile, the combination of output polarization states changes with the illumination polarization type. The theoretical analysis provides a detailed explanation for the generation of the integrated polarization states. The well-designed metasurface polarizers may generate more complex polarization modes, including vector beams and vector vortex beams. The theoretical and simulated results confirm the polarization performance of the proposed integrated metasurface polarizers. The compact design of metasurface polarizers and the controllable generation of versatile polarization combinations are a benefit to the applications of polarization light in optical imaging, biomedical sensing, and material processing.

Branched chain amino acids (BCAA), especially leucine (Leu), have been reported to decrease fat deposition. However, opposite effects of BCAA on lipid metabolism have been observed. To determine the role of BCAA in lipid metabolism, an amino acid-defined diet was formulated and C57BL/6J mice were assigned into the following groups: amino acid-defined control diet and control diet supplemented with Leu, isoleucine, or valine. Nitrogen was balanced by proportionally mixed amino acids except BCAA. Results showed that dietary Leu supplementation significantly increased the levels of serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and urea nitrogen. Metabolomics showed that biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids was altered by Leu supplementation. Leu treatment up-regulated the expression of genes related to fat synthesis and down-regulated the expression of genes related to fatty acid synthesis. Furthermore, the genes and proteins of selective markers involved in browning of white adipose tissue (WAT) were up-regulated by dietary supplementation with Leu. This study indicated that dietary supplementation with Leu, but not isoleucine or valine, significantly affected lipid metabolism by regulating lipid metabolism-related genes and serum fatty acid concentration, providing a new tool in the management of obesity and metabolic disorders.

Emerging evidence shows that amino acids can modulate lipid metabolism. Aromatic amino acids (AAAs) serve as important precursors of several neurotransmitters and metabolic regulators that play a vital role in regulating nutrient metabolism. But whether AAAs have a lipid-lowering function remains unknown. Here mice were fed amino acid-defined diets containing AAAs at 1.82% and 3.64% for 3 weeks. We demonstrated that double AAA intake significantly decreased the serum and hepatic triglycerides and serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, but increased the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol as well as insulin tolerance. Combined metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis showed that the hepatic acidic pathway of bile acid synthesis was responsible for the improvement in lipid metabolism by AAA treatment. This study suggests that AAAs have the potential to ameliorate steatosis and provides a new alternative to improve lipid metabolism.

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), particularly leucine, were reported to decrease obesity and relevant metabolic syndrome. However, whether valine has a similar effect has rarely been investigated. In the present study, mice were assigned into four treatments (n = 10): chow diet supplemented with water (CW) or valine (CV) and high-fat diet supplemented with water (HW) or valine (HV). Valine (3%, w/v) was supplied in the drinking water. The results showed that valine treatment markedly increased serum triglyceride and insulin levels of chow diet-fed mice. The body weight, serum triglyceride level, white adipose tissue weight, and glucose and insulin intolerance were significantly elevated by valine supplementation in high-fat diet-fed mice. Metabolomics and transcriptomics showed that several genes related to fat oxidation were downregulated, and arachidonic acid and linoleic acid metabolism were altered in the HV group compared to the HW group. In conclusion, valine supplementation did not suppress lipid deposition and metabolic disorders in mice, which provides a new understanding for BCAAs in the modulation of lipid metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Gut microbes can contribute to their hosts in food digestion, nutrient absorption, and inhibiting the growth of pathogens. However, only limited studies have focused on the gut microbiota of freshwater snails. Pomacea canaliculata is considered one of the worst invasive alien species in the world. Elucidating the diversity and composition of the microbiota in the gut of P. canaliculata snails may be helpful for better understanding the widespread invasion of this snail species. In this study, the buccal masses, stomachs, and intestines were isolated from seven P. canaliculata snails. The diversity and composition of the microbiota in the three gut sections were then investigated based on high-throughput Illumina sequencing targeting the V3-V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene. RESULTS: The diversity of the microbiota was highest in the intestine but lowest in the buccal mass. A total of 29 phyla and 111 genera of bacteria were identified in all of the samples. In general, Ochrobactrum, a genus of putative cellulose-degrading bacteria, was the most abundant (overall relative abundance: 13.6%), followed by Sediminibacterium (9.7%), Desulfovibrio (7.8%), an unclassified genus in the family Aeromonadaceae (5.4%), and Cloacibacterium (5.4%). The composition of the microbiota was diverse among the different gut sections. Ochrobactrum (relative abundance: 23.15% ± 7.92%) and Sediminibacterium (16.95 ± 5.70%) were most abundant in the stomach, an unclassified genus in the family Porphyromonadaceae (14.28 ± 7.29%) and Leptotrichia (8.70 ± 4.46%) were highest in the buccal mass, and two genera in the families Aeromonadaceae (7.55 ± 4.53%) and Mollicutes (13.47 ± 13.03%) were highest in the intestine. CONCLUSIONS: The diversity and composition of the microbiome vary among different gut sections of P. canaliculata snails. Putative cellulose-degrading bacteria are enriched in the gut of P. canaliculata.

BACKGROUND: Achatina fulica, the giant African snail, is the largest terrestrial mollusk species. Owing to its voracious appetite, wide environmental adaptability, high growth rate, and reproductive capacity, it has become an invasive species across the world, mainly in Southeast Asia, Japan, the western Pacific islands, and China. This pest can damage agricultural crops and is an intermediate host of many parasites that can threaten human health. However, genomic information of A. fulica remains limited, hindering genetic and genomic studies for invasion control and management of the species. FINDINGS: Using a k-mer-based method, we estimated the A. fulica genome size to be 2.12 Gb, with a high repeat content up to 71%. Roughly 101.6 Gb genomic long-read data of A. fulica were generated from the Pacific Biosciences sequencing platform and assembled to produce a first A. fulica genome of 1.85 Gb with a contig N50 length of 726 kb. Using contact information from the Hi-C sequencing data, we successfully anchored 99.32% contig sequences into 31 chromosomes, leading to the final contig and scaffold N50 length of 721 kb and 59.6 Mb, respectively. The continuity, completeness, and accuracy were evaluated by genome comparison with other mollusk genomes, BUSCO assessment, and genomic read mapping. A total of 23,726 protein-coding genes were predicted from the assembled genome, among which 96.34% of the genes were functionally annotated. The phylogenetic analysis using whole-genome protein-coding genes revealed that A. fulica separated from a common ancestor with Biomphalaria glabrata ∼182 million years ago. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, the A. fulica genome is the first terrestrial mollusk genome published to date. The chromosome sequence of A. fulica will provide the research community with a valuable resource for population genetics and environmental adaptation studies for the species, as well as investigations of the chromosome-level of evolution within mollusks.

Our previous study demonstrated that Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) administration during pregnancy could alter the percentage of T cells subpopulation in the thymus of the neonatal rats; however, little is known about the effect of maternal SEB administration during pregnancy on T cells subpopulation in the peripheral blood of the offspring rats. In the present study, pregnant rats at gestational day 16 were intravenously injected with 15 µg SEB. The present study found that prenatal exposure to SEB significantly decreased the percentages of CD8 T cells in the peripheral blood of both neonatal rats on the fifth day after delivery and the adult offspring rats. Furthermore, it significantly increased the percentage of CD4 T cells as well as the ratios of CD4 to CD8 T cells in both neonatal and adult offspring rats. Prenatal exposure to SEB significantly decreased the expression levels of IL-4 and IFN-γ in the plasma of neonatal and adult offspring rats. Furthermore, SEB restimulation significantly increased the percentage of CD8 T cells and significantly decreased the percentage of CD4 T cells. These data suggest the prenatal exposure to SEB can imprint the increased CD4:CD8 T cell ratio in the peripheral blood from the neonate to adulthood through the decreased CD8 T cells and the increased CD4 T cells, and altered the response characteristics of CD4 and CD8 T cells to secondary SEB administration in the peripheral blood of the adult offspring rats.
