RESUMO

Here, we compared 3D-printed polycaprolactone/poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)/ß-tricalcium phosphate (PCL/PLGA/ß-TCP) membranes with the widely used collagen membranes for guided bone regeneration (GBR) in beagle implant models. For mechanical property comparison in dry and wet conditions and cytocompatibility determination, we analyzed the rate and pattern of cell proliferation of seeded fibroblasts and preosteoblasts using the cell counting kit-8 assay and scanning electron microscopy. Osteogenic differentiation was verified using alizarin red S staining. At 8 weeks following implantation in vivo using beagle dogs, computed tomography and histological analyses were performed after sacrifice. Cell proliferation rates in vitro indicated that early cell attachment was higher in collagen than in PCL/PLGA/ß-TCP membranes; however, the difference subsided by day 7. Similar outcomes were found for osteogenic differentiation, with approximately 2.5 times greater staining in collagen than PCL/PLGA/ß-TCP, but without significant difference by day 14. In vivo, bone regeneration in the defect area, represented by new bone formation and bone-to-implant contact, paralleled those associated with collagen membranes. However, tensile testing revealed that whereas the PCL/PLGA/ß-TCP membrane mechanical properties were conserved in both wet and dry states, the tensile property of collagen was reduced by 99% under wet conditions. Our results demonstrate in vitro and in vivo that PCL/PLGA/ß-TCP membranes have similar levels of biocompatibility and bone regeneration as collagen membranes. In particular, considering that GBR is always applied to a wet environment (e.g. blood, saliva), we demonstrated that PCL/PLGA/ß-TCP membranes maintained their form more reliably than collagen membranes in a wet setting, confirming their appropriateness as a GBR membrane.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To observe the clinical features and angiographic findings in patients with a spontaneous isolated superior mesenteric artery dissection (SISMAD) and to identify any correlation between them. METHODS: From a single institution, 32 patients (22 symptomatic patients at presentation; mean age 54years; men 97%) with SISMAD were retrospectively reviewed. All patients were available for clinical follow-up after treatment (conservative, n=28, 88%, open or endovascular superior mesenteric artery (SMA) reconstruction, n=4, 12%), and follow-up CT scans were available in 28 patients (mean 22months, range 1-80months). RESULTS: We found a positive correlation between pain severity and dissection length (p=0.03, rho=0.50, Spearman's partial correlation analysis). After conservative treatment, only one patient (3%) required bowel resection, and there was no difference in outcome between patients who were treated with anticoagulation or anti-platelet therapy and those who were not (p=1.00, Fisher's exact test). No patients had progression of their lesion on the follow-up CT angiography. CONCLUSIONS: In SISMAD patients, dissection length is positively associated with more severe clinical symptoms. After conservative treatment, we observed a benign clinical course and no CT progression of the dissection, even without anticoagulation or anti-platelet therapy. Based on our observation, patients with SISMAD can be treated conservatively without anticoagulation therapy.

RESUMO

Four isolates of Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV-potato 1 to 4) were obtained from potato plants (Solanum tuberosum) in cultivated potato plantings in Korea. These isolates were differentiated based on biological properties, symptomatology, and nucleotide sequence analysis of the coat protein (CP) gene. TMV potato isolates caused typical symptoms on 20 inoculated plant species as compared to the type (U1) TMV strain. The four isolates each produced distinctly different symptoms on Gomphrena globosa. In contrast to the type strain of TMV, infections with two of the isolates reported here were not restricted to inoculated leaves of G. globosa but moved systemically through the plants. In addition, three additional systemic hosts (Chenopodium amaranticolor, C. quinoa, and C. murale) for TMV were revealed. Sequence analysis of the CP gene differentiated TMV-potato isolates. The CP gene sequence exhibited significant identity (83.1 to 99.2%) among TMV-potato isolates while showing 88.1 to 99.4% identities on predicted amino acid sequences. Based on a comparison of the CP gene nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences between TMV-potato isolates and other TMV strains, TMV-potato 1, 3, and 4 were closely related to TMV strains U1, U2, V-FAVA, and NC82 with 98.8 to 100% identity. In contrast, TMV-potato 2 was closely related to TMV strains L, KP, KO-TOB, K1, and K2 with 93.8 to 98.8% identity.

RESUMO

Samples of cord serum from 29 healthy neonates were analysed for digoxin-like immunoreactive substance (DLIS), cortisol, 17 beta-oestradiol, progesterone, dehydroepiandrosterone-sulphate (DHEAS), 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (17OHP), androstenedione, oestriol and ouabain-like activity (OLA; by inhibition of Na+, K+ATPase activity). The mean serum concentration of DLIS was 0.91 (SD = 0.19) nmol/L and the mean OLA was 26.1 (SD = 11.5) nmol/L. There was no correlation between DLIS and OLA. DLIS correlated significantly with oestriol (r = 0.521), progesterone (r = 0.534) and 17OHP (r = 0.43). Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that 17 beta-oestradiol, progesterone and androstenedione contributed to DLIS and the intercept was 0.64 (SD = 0.127). The concentrations of steroids (17 beta-oestradiol, progesterone, androstenedione) required to displace digoxin by 50% in the digoxin immunoassay and inhibit Na+,K+ATPase in the OLA assay were 10(3)-10(4)-fold higher than those found in cord serum. We conclude that the contribution of these steroids to DLIS is small and that DLIS and OLA measure different compounds.
