RESUMO

Background: An increased level of interleukin-17A and interleukin-18 in the serum and intestinal mucosa of celiac disease patients reflecting the severity of villous atrophy and inflammation was documented. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the concentrations of salivary-17A, interleukin-1 beta, and interleukin-18 in patients with celiac disease who are on a gluten-free diet, both with and without periodontitis, and to compare these levels with those in healthy individuals. Methods: The study involved 23 participants with serologically confirmed celiac disease (CD) and 23 control subjects. The CD patients had been following a gluten-free diet (GFD) for a minimum of 1 year and had no other autoimmune disorders. The research involved collecting demographic data, conducting periodontal examinations, gathering unstimulated whole saliva, and performing enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays to measure salivary interleukin-17A, interleukin-1 beta, and interleukin-18 levels. Spearman's correlation analysis was utilized to explore the relationships between CD markers in patients on a GFD and their periodontal clinical findings. Results: The periodontal findings indicated significantly lower values in celiac disease patients adhering to a gluten-free diet compared to control subjects (p = 0.001). No significant differences were found in salivary IL-17A, IL-18, and IL-1B levels between celiac disease patients and control subjects. Nevertheless, the levels of all interleukins were elevated in periodontitis patients in both the celiac and control groups. The IL-1 Beta level was significantly higher in periodontitis patients compared to non-periodontitis patients in the control group (p = 0.035). Significant negative correlations were observed between serum IgA levels and plaque index (r = -0.460, p = 0.010), as well as gingival index (r = -0.396, p = 0.030) in CD patients on a gluten-free diet. Conclusion: Celiac disease patients on gluten-free diet exhibited better periodontal health compared to control subjects. However, increased levels of salivary IL-17A, IL-18 and IL-1B levels were associated with periodontitis. Additionally, serum IgA level was significantly inversely associated with periodontitis clinical manifestations and with salivary inflammatory mediators in CD patients on GFD.

(1) Background: In this study, the impact of odontogenic risk factors with nasal septum deviation on maxillary sinus mucosal thickening was assessed using Cone-beam computed tomography CBCT. (2) Methods: A total of 328 maxillary sinus regions from 164 patients (85 males and 79 females) were examined. Images were interpreted by dental specialists and Otolaryngologists. Coronal and sagittal sections were examined to assess the proximity of the root tips of posterior maxillary teeth (RPMT) to the maxillary sinus. The periodontal bone loss for all maxillary posterior teeth was also assessed. Consequently, maxillary sinus mucosal thickening (MT) was further classified into three gradings. Multilevel modeling regression analysis was used due to the hierarchical structuring of the data. Four models were developed, a null model with no factors, a model with tooth-level factors (RPMT, PBL, tooth condition, and root length), a model with patient-level factors (gender and nasal septum deviation), and a model with combined patient- and tooth-level factors. Regression estimates (AOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of individual and tooth factors were calculated. (3) Results: Multilevel regression analysis showed that RPMT was significantly associated with MT of maxillary sinus (p < 0.001), where patients who had RPMT > 0 had higher odds of MT of maxillary sinus. Tooth condition was also found to be significantly associated with MT of maxillary sinus, where teeth with failed RCT (p < 0.001) and teeth with restorations (p < 0.008) had higher odds of MT of maxillary sinus (AOR = 2.87, 95%CI 1.65, 4.42, AOR = 1.64, 95%CI 1.14, 2.36, respectively). (4) Conclusions: In order to plan preoperative treatment for maxillary posterior teeth, it is important to assess the anatomical relationship between the sinus floor and the root tips of the maxillary posterior teeth. Additionally, we establish a better understanding of the clinician before surgical intervention is conducted.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the level of knowledge and attitude of dental students about the etiology, diagnosis, and management of peri-implantitis. METHODS: An online cross-sectional study that targeted senior undergraduate dental students at the College of Dentistry was conducted. A closed-ended survey consisting of 28 questions was designed. Three sections were created: 1) participants' characteristics; 2) Knowledge of peri-implantitis etiology, risk factors, diagnosis, and complications; 3) The use of antibiotics in peri-implantitis, diagnosis, and treatment methods. SPSS version 22 (IBM Corp.) was used for data analysis. Counts and percentages were calculated for correct answers in each section. RESULTS: A total of 267 dental students responded to the questionnaire. The majority of the participants (81.6%) were knowledgeable about peri-implantitis being an inflammatory reaction, and a lesser percentage (77.9%) knew that bacterial plaque is an etiologic factor for peri-implant diseases. 82.0% of the participants identified smoking as a risk factor, followed by periodontitis (80.5%). Regarding implant complications, 57.3% of the participants considered implant mobility as a definitive indication for implant removal. More than half of the participants reported using crater-like bone defects surrounding implants to diagnose peri-implantitis. The most commonly used antibiotic was amoxicillin (34.1%), followed by amoxicillin combined with metronidazole (26.9%). CONCLUSION: Most participants had a basic understanding of the etiology and risk factors of peri-implantitis. On the other hand, more courses addressing peri-implantitis diagnosis are needed.

OBJECTIVE: Socket preservation techniques have been used to maintain the ridge dimension following tooth extraction. The materials used influence the quality and quantity of newly formed bone. Therefore, the aim of this article was to systematically review the literature reporting both histological and radiographic outcomes of socket preservation techniques after tooth extraction in human subjects. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A systematic electronic search was performed in the electronic databases. English language clinical studies that were published between 2017 and 2022 and included both histological and radiographic findings for the test and control groups. Our primary search produced 848 articles, and of these, 215 were duplicate studies. A total of 72 articles were then eligible for full-text reading. RESULTS: The review included eight studies that met its inclusion criteria. Three outcomes were compared in the included studies. The percentage of newly formed bone ranged from 21.34 ± 9.14% to more than 50% of new bone formation. The materials that showed more than 50% of newly formed bone formation were demineralized dentin graft, platelet-rich fibrin, freeze-dried bone allograft, corticocancellous porcine, and autogenous bone. Four Studies did not report the percentage of the residual graft materials, while those who reported showed a variable range of a minimum 1.5% to more than 25%. One study did not report the changes in horizontal width at the follow-up period, while other studies ranged from 0.6 mm to 10 mm. CONCLUSION: Socket preservation represents an efficient technique to preserve the ridge contour with satisfactory newly formed bone in the augmented site and maintaining the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the ridge.

BACKGROUND: smoking is considered the most modifiable risk factor for periodontal disease. OBJECTIVE: the aim of this narrative review is to emphasize the effect of smoking on periodontal and implant therapy. METHODS: The authors reviewed the literature reporting the clinical outcomes of smoking on periodontal surgical and nonsurgical treatment. The impact of smoking on implant therapy and sinus lifting procedures were also reviewed. RESULTS: Periodontal and implant therapy outcomes are adversely affected by smoking. Smokers respond less favorably to periodontal therapy and periodontal flap procedures as compared to nonsmokers. Clinical outcomes for smokers are 50-75% worse than for nonsmokers. Studies reveal that smokers experience a significantly lower reduction in pocket depth compared to nonsmokers as well as less bone growth after treating infra-bony defects with guided tissue regeneration. The relative risk of implant failure is significantly higher in patients who smoke 20 cigarettes or more per day compared to nonsmokers. Additionally, smoking has also been shown to increase postoperative wound dehiscence and infection rates following sinus floor elevation. Longitudinal studies on smoke cessation have shown a reduction in bone loss and probing depths for periodontitis patients after cessation compared to those who smoke. CONCLUSION: Smoking cessation can reduce probing depths and improve clinical attachment after nonsurgical periodontal therapy. There is insufficient evidence regarding the effect of smoking on peri-implantitis, as well as the loss of implants in the long-term.

AIM: In this study, we aimed to evaluate soft tissue generated by periosteal distraction. BACKGROUND: Management of soft tissue defects represents a challenge in dentistry. Previous periosteal distraction studies documented partial fill of the distraction space with newly-generated bone and fibrous connective tissue. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Titanium meshes were inserted in subperiosteal tunnels in the calvaria of 20 rats through coronal incision. The devices were immediately activated after insertion by elevation of one side at 1 mm/day for 3 days. Rats were then divided into two groups (n = 10). Animals were sacrificed after 2 weeks (Group 1) and after 4 weeks (Group 2). Distraction sites specimens were embedded in paraffin and analyzed histologically and histomorphometrically. RESULTS: In both groups, new periosteum was regenerated and covered the original bone surface in the distraction site. Distraction spaces showed a predomination of hyper-vascularized connective tissue and little new bone formation near to the stable end of the device. The 4-week findings showed more organized collagen fibers with less vascularity compared to the 2-week findings. CONCLUSION: The periosteal distraction technique can effectively regenerate connective tissue. It may open a new modality in the guided tissue regeneration for soft tissue augmentation.

OBJECTIVE: Among other regulatory functions, vitamin D has a role in modulating the inflammatory process of periodontal disease. Therefore, this retrospective study aimed to assess the relationship between vitamin D levels and periodontal health in dental patients from the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: Radiographs and serum vitamin D levels of patients seeking dental treatment were collected. Exclusion criteria were systemic disease, smoking, recent vitamin D supplementation, and previous periodontal surgery. Gender, age, and alveolar crest height (ACH) were recorded. A total of 67 patients were categorized into three groups according to their serum vitamin D level (<10, <20, and > 20 ng/mL) and their bone loss compared. RESULTS: Differences in means were compared by t-test. ANOVA was used to compare vitamin D groups and the corresponding ACH, as well as the correlation (p < .05). Patients with vitamin D levels > 20 ng/mL demonstrated a mean ACH of 1.6 mm. The mean ACH was 3.1 mm for those with vitamin D levels < 20 ng/mL, and 4.6 mm for vitamin D levels < 10 ng/mL. A weak negative correlation was found between vitamin D and ACH in all groups (r = -0.055, p = .7). CONCLUSION: Serum vitamin D level seems to be an important factor that influences oral health, especially the periodontal condition, of both male and female patients.

Mandibular osteomyelitis (OM) is a challenging disease. Our objective was to assess a new OM model in rabbits induced by arsenic trioxide and to assess the efficacy of local treatment of OM using injectable gentamicin-collagen hydrogels (GNT-COLL). OM was induced unilaterally by controlled confinement of arsenic trioxide paste to the root canal of lower incisors of rabbits, while OM progression was characterized for 16 weeks. On the other hand, two injectable COLL hydrogels functionalized with GNT were prepared and characterized for physicochemical properties; a simple GNT-COLL and a nanohydroxyapatite (nHA)- loaded hydrogel (GNT-COLL/nHA). The two hydrogels were evaluated to treat OM model, while a multidose intramuscular GNT solution served as positive control. Outcomes were assessed by standard methods at 4 and 12 weeks post-surgery. The clinical, radiographical, and histopathological findings provided evidence for the validity of the arsenic-induced OM. The results demonstrated that a single intra-lesional injection of the two hydrogels was more suppressive to OM compared to multidose systemic GNT. The composite GNT-COLL/nHA hydrogel proved to induce early preservation of alveolar bone (ridge) length and higher amount of bone area\total area at 4 weeks (40.53% ± 2.34) followed by GNT-COLL (32.21% ± 0.72). On the other hand, the positive control group revealed the least ridge length and bone area\total area (26.22% ± 1.32) at 4 weeks. Both hydrogels successfully arrested OM with no signs of recurrence for up to 12 weeks. Therefore, results support the greater advantages of the composite hydrogel as an osteogenic/antibiotic delivery system in OM treatment.

Background The aim of this study was to assess the root morphology of mandibular molar teeth using cone­beam computed tomography (CBCT) in patients with periodontal disease. Methods In total, 88 patients were included in this study (70 patients with periodontitis and 18 patients with non-periodontitis). This cross-sectional study involved CBCT images taken for patients who visited the dental clinic of Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (IAU) from January 2019 to March 2021. The following data were analyzed on the mandibular molars: root length, number of root canals, root trunk, distance between roots, accessory canals in the furcation area (ACF), bone loss, and furcation involvement. Results The mesial root was longer than the distal root in the mandibular molars of periodontitis and non-periodontitis patients. A statistically significant difference was observed between non-periodontitis and periodontitis patients regarding the number of mesial root canals of the mandibular first molar; 70% had two root canals in non-periodontitis patients, compared with 86.1% in periodontitis patients (p = 0.04). First molars of non-periodontitis patients had significantly longer root trunks than periodontitis patients (4.65 ± 0.90 compared with 4.09 ± 1.02, p = 0.007). There was a statistically significant difference in bone loss between non-periodontitis and periodontitis patients (0% and 25% for first molars, and 2.8% and 23.6% for second molars, respectively). Accessory furcation canals were 2.9 % in second molars and 7.1 % in first molars in periodontitis patients, which were higher compared with non-periodontitis patients. Conclusions The first molar showed a longer root trunk in non-periodontitis patients than in periodontitis patients. The mean mesial and distal root lengths were also greater in the first than the second molar. Accessory canals in the furcation area were more observed in first molars than in second molars in periodontitis patients compared with non-periodontitis patients.

BACKGROUND: Creating a secluded large space using guided bone regeneration (GBR) is a novel osteogenesis technique used in the prevention of premature membrane exposure complications. However, this technique is not considered clinically feasible. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the outcome of the insertion of two novel GBR devices in a rabbit calvarial model in terms of mode of action, simplicity, and amount of new space and bone gained. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The expansible GBR (EGBR) device, composed mainly of a titanium plate, silicone membrane, and activation screw, was inserted beneath the periosteum in the calvarial area of eight rabbits. The smart GBR (SGBR) device, composed of silicone sheets and Nitinol strips, were inserted beneath the periosteum in the calvarial area of another 10 rabbits. Half of each group was sacrificed 2 months after surgery, and the other half was sacrificed after 4 months. RESULTS: Histological and microradiographical analysis showed that, at 2 months, the EGBR device achieved a mean space gain of 207.2 mm3, a mean bone volume of 68.2 mm3, and a mean maximum bone height of 1.9 mm. Values for the same parameters at 4 months were 202.1 mm3, 70.3 mm3, and 1.6 mm, respectively. The SGBR device had significantly higher (P < 0.05) mean space gain (238.2 mm3; 239.5 mm3), bone volume (112.9 mm3, 107.7 mm3), and bone height (2.7 mm; 2.6 mm) than the EGBR device at 2 and 4 months, respectively. CONCLUSION: Both devices proved to be effective in augmenting bone vertically through the application of GBR and soft tissue expansion processes. However, the SGBR device was more efficient in terms of mode of action, simplicity, and amount of bone created in the new space.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the morphological features in the anterior mandibular region, the presence of lingual foramen and canal dimensions in Saudi subjects that would interfere with standard implant placement. METHODS: CBCT scans of patients seeking implant treatment were examined. Based on the dentition status, patients were categorized into edentulous (group I) and dentulous (group I). On the panoramic view, the distance between the two mental foramina was divided into vertical segments of 10 mm width. In each segment, vertical bone height and buccolingual thickness at three levels (alveolar crest, 5 mm, and 10 mm apical to the crest) were assessed. The lingual foramen prevalence and canal features were assessed as well. Comparisons between the two groups regarding the assessed parameters were performed using the t-test. The percentage of edentulous mandibles with thickness <6 mm corresponding to the standard implant diameter was also calculated. RESULTS: Following the inclusion and exclusion criteria, group I consisted of 45 subjects and group II comprised 26 subjects. Bone height and thickness at the crestal level were significantly less in edentulous (I) than dentate mandibles (II) (P < 0.0001). The lingual foramen was detected in 90% of patients. In both groups, males had significantly greater mandibular height than females (P=0.02 and 0.005). At the crestal level, the thickness was <6 mm in 50% of the anterior mandibular segments. CONCLUSION: Half of the edentulous patients may receive normal size implants in the anterior interforaminal segments, while the other half will be limited to narrow implants (3.5 mm and less). The lingual foramen location, canal size, and position may represent another limitation for implant placement in that segment.

Bone regeneration by periosteal distraction has been reported in numerous animal studies; however, the main disadvantages of this technique are poor bone quality and soft tissue invasion in the distracted space. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a novel shape memory-based device to promote bone regeneration in a large, secluded growth space in a rabbit model. Twenty rabbits were divided into two groups. In the first group (n = 10), a device composed of silicone sheets and nitinol strips was inserted subperiosteally in the calvarial area. In the second group (n = 10), only silicone sheets were inserted in the calvarial area. Each group was further divided in half: five animals were sacrificed at 8 weeks postoperatively, and the other five were sacrificed at 16 weeks postoperatively. In the study group, the new device vertically expanded the overlying soft tissue 4 mm above the original bone and created a secluded space; the newly generated bone maximum height median ranged between 2.7 mm in 8 weeks group and 2.6 mm in 16 weeks group. In the control group, a very thin rim of bone was generated below the flat silicone sheets on top of the original bone. Maximum bone heights median ranged from 0.37 mm in 8 weeks group to 0.32 mm in 16 weeks group. The device was proven to be effective at vertically augmenting bone by applying the guided bone regeneration and soft tissue expansion procedures simultaneously. This device may pave the way for a new generation of smart guided bone regeneration membranes that can remember the original dimensions of resorbed bone areas.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the effect of the chemotherapeutic agent bevacizumab on the extraction socket healing process in New Zealand rabbits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The animals received intraperitoneal bevacizumab treatment for 6 consecutive weeks (3 mg/kg per week). The right mandibular first premolar was extracted in the second week of the experiment, and the jaw bone containing the socket tissues was harvested at the end of the treatment period. The healing of the removed socket was analyzed histologically and radiographically using a micro-computed tomography scan. RESULTS: Quantitative morphometric and histologic assessments of the healing process of the extraction sockets in rabbits showed a marked (P ≤ .05) decrease in the bone volumetric mass after angiogenesis suppression by bevacizumab therapy (n = 5) compared with the control group (n = 5). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study indicate the physiological significance of angiogenesis in extraction socket healing. Moreover, this study highlights the risks and precautions that should be considered in clinical practice in patients undergoing targeted chemotherapy.

Targeted chemotherapies are novel therapeutic approaches for many malignancies. In contrast to conventional chemotherapies, which are given for a predetermined duration, treatment with targeted chemotherapies like sunitinib is routinely continuous over longer periods, sometimes years. During this prolonged treatment period, patients may need to restore their missing teeth with dental implants. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of the anti-angiogenic substance sunitinib targeted chemotherapy on the osseointegration of titanium implants in a rabbit model. Fourteen white New Zealand rabbits were randomly assigned to two groups of either oral sunitinib at 10 mg/kg twice per week dose for 4 weeks (n = 7) or placebo (n = 7). The first dose was given 2 days before the surgical intervention. Each rabbit received one titanium dental implant in the right distal femoral condyle. Four weeks following implant insertion, rabbits were sacrificed and bone specimens containing the implants were retrieved. Osseointegration of the implants was analyzed using micro-computed tomography and histomorphometric evaluation. Both micro-computed tomography and histomorphometric analysis showed that the osseointegration parameters, including the ratio of bone volume to total volume and bone-implant contact percent for the sunitinib group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P ≤ 0.05). Sunitinib targeted chemotherapy had a negative effect on the osseointegration of titanium implants inserted in a rabbit model.

PURPOSE: This review considers possible surgical treatment modalities for induced periimplantitis to regain re-osseointegration as reported in the recent literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Electronic searches in MEDLINE/PubMed and Google Scholar databases were performed on experimental studies considering induced periimplantitis and attempts to achieve re-osseointegration from 2003 up to December 2016. Conflicts about articles were solved by authors' discussion. RESULTS: A total of 15 studies of 159 were finally included in the review. DISCUSSION: Various implant surface decontamination techniques chemical and/or mechanical have been used either alone or simultaneously with/without guided bone regeneration. Despite the access-flap surgery, it was observed that application of single decontamination measure either chemical or mechanical was not adequate to provide a better treatment outcome. Laser application such as CO2, diode, and Er: YAG has been a new treatment approach used for periimplantitis treatment. Er: YAG laser had showed no implant surface alteration and provided favorable environment for re-osseointegration. CONCLUSION: Promising results were observed in the studies that used combination of bone substitutes together with guided bone regeneration for the regenerative therapy. Regarding implant surfaces, better re-osseointegration was observed with rough implant surfaces rather than smooth ones.

BACKGROUND: Although oral rehabilitation with dental implants is a very promising and effective procedure, peri-implantitis is an emerging concern. Surgical and non-surgical methods have been applied to treat peri-implantitis together with various implant surface decontamination methods. However, there is no consensus concerning the most effective treatment for peri-implantitis. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effects of erbium-doped:yttrium, aluminum, and garnet (Er:YAG) laser, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and titanium bur with and without citric acid on ligature-induced peri-implantitis around an anodized implant surface. METHODS: Thirty dental implants with anodized surface (3.3 × 10 mm) were installed in the mandibles of five beagle dogs. After 3 months, peri-implantitis was induced by applying cotton ligatures subgingivally. After ligature removal (baseline), the implants were divided into the following treatment groups: 1) Er:YAG laser, 2) PDT, 3) titanium bur alone, and 4) titanium bur with citric acid. Animals were sacrificed after 3 months, and clinical, radiologic, histologic, and histomorphometric evaluations were conducted for all treatment modalities. The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey test. A value of P <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The titanium bur with citric acid group exhibited statistically significantly greater improvement in vertical bone height than the Er:YAG laser group and significantly better bone-to-implant contact than the PDT group and the bur-alone group. CONCLUSION: Within the limits of the study, the combination of mechanical and chemical treatment proved to be the most effective treatment for disinfection of the anodized implant surface.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of ligature-induced periimplantitis on dental implants with and without hydroxyapatite (HA) coat. METHODS: Thirty-two dental implants (3.3 mm wide, 13 mm long) with 4 surface treatments (8 implant/group) (M: machined, SA: sandblasted acid etched, S: sputter HA coat and P: plasma-sprayed HA coat) were inserted into canine mandibles. After 12 weeks, oral hygiene procedures were stopped and silk ligatures were placed around the implant abutments to allow plaque accumulation for the following 16 weeks. Implants with the surrounding tissues were retrieved and prepared for histological examination. Bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and implant surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. RESULTS: Histological observation revealed marginal bone loss and large inflammatory cell infiltrates in the periimplant soft tissue. Sputter HA implants showed the largest BIC (98.1%) and machined implant showed the smallest values (70.4%). After 28 weeks, thin sputter HA coat was almost completely dissolved, whereas plasma-sprayed HA coat showed complete thickness preservation. CONCLUSION: Thin sputter HA-coated implants showed more bone implant contact and less marginal bone loss than thick HA-coated implants under periimplantitis condition.

OBJECTIVE: The introduction of focused ion beam (FIB) milling has facilitated preparation of hard tissue samples for transmission electron microscope (TEM). However, this technique generates high temperature that may alter or damage morphological features in biological tissue. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of cryogenic cooling on the morphological features of dentin interfaces with dental restorative materials in samples prepared by FIB for TEM examination. METHODS: After preparation of a cylindrical-shaped cavities in extracted, non-carious premolar teeth, the specimens were restored with dental adhesive/composite and categorized into two restorative materials groups; (PB) a combination of Clearfil Protect Bond (Kuraray Noritake Dental, Japan)/Estelite Sigma Quick composite (Tokuyama Dental, Japan), and (SB) Filtek Silorane restorative system (3M ESPE, USA). The specimens were subjected to interfacial cross-sectioning, followed by observation and area selection using confocal laser microscopy. Later, ultrathin sections were prepared using FIB with cryogenic cooling (PB-C) and (SB-C), or without cooling (PB-NC) and (SB-NC) that all were examined under TEM. RESULTS: Resulting TEM images of the ultra-morphological features at the resin-dentin nano-interaction zone were improved when FIB preparation was conducted in the cryogenic condition and no sign of artifacts were detected. SIGNIFICANCE: Conducting ion beam milling with cryogenic cooling was advantageous in minimizing the elevation in specimen temperature. This led to preservation of dentin microstructures that revealed additional information about substrates that are necessary for advanced characterization of tooth-biomaterial interactions.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the vertical new bone formation induced by sputtered HA-coated titanium implants (HA-coated) compared with sandblasted acid-etched titanium implants (noncoated) in a rabbit calvarial model. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Twenty HA-coated and 20 noncoated titanium implants were divided equally into four groups as HA-coated implant (HA); noncoated implant (NC); HA-coated implant with membrane (HA/M); noncoated implant with membrane (NC/M). All implants were placed 5 mm above the original bone (OB). Collagen membranes were placed over the implants in HA/M and NC/M groups. The animals were sacrificed at 4 weeks (n = 5) and 8 weeks (n = 5). Vertical bone height above OB (VBH, mm) and augmented bone area (ABA, mm(2) ) were analyzed histologically and radiographically. RESULTS: At 4 weeks, VBH reached significantly higher level in HA/M group compared with other three groups (p < 0.05). At 8 weeks, significant difference was detected between HA/M and NC groups (p < 0.05). At 4 and 8 weeks, ABA in HA/M group was significantly larger compared with other three groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The present results indicated that sputtered HA-coated titanium implant together with collagen membrane could be a novel and effective approach for vertical bone augmentation.

This study evaluated the quantity and quality of newly formed vertical bone induced by sputtered hydroxyapatite-coated titanium implants compared with sandblasted acid-etched implants after dura mater elevation. Hydroxyapatite-coated and non-coated implants (n = 20/group) were used and divided equally into two groups. All implants were randomly placed into rabbit calvarial bone (four implants for each animal) emerging from the inferior cortical layer, displacing the dura mater 3 mm below the original bone. Animals were sacrificed at 4 (n = 5) and 8 (n = 5) weeks post-surgery. Vertical bone height and area were analyzed histologically and radiographically below the original bone. Vertical bone formation was observed in both groups. At 4 and 8 weeks, vertical bone height reached a significantly higher level in the hydroxyapatite compared with the non-coated group (p < 0.05). Vertical bone area was significantly larger in the hydroxyapatite compared with the non-coated group at 4 and 8 weeks (p < 0.05). This study indicates that vertical bone formation can be induced by dura mater elevation and sputtered hydroxyapatite coating can enhance vertical bone formation.
