Background and Objectives: Coronary artery anomalies (CAAs) represent a group of rare cardiac abnormalities with an incidence of up to 1.2%. The aim of this retrospective study was to conduct a comprehensive epidemiological assessment of the prevalence of hypoplastic coronary arteries using coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) in patients with diagnosed CAAs and individuals presenting with cardiovascular manifestations in the north-eastern region of Romania. This study was motivated by the limited investigation of the CAAs conducted in this area. Methods: We analyzed data collected from 12,758 coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) records available at the "Prof. Dr. George I.M. Georgescu" Cardiovascular Diseases Institute, spanning the years 2012 to 2022. Results: Among 350 individuals with CAAs (2.7% of the total cohort), 71 patients (20.3% of the anomaly presenting group and 0.5% of the entire CCTA cohort) exhibited at least one hypoplastic coronary artery. The mean age of individuals diagnosed with hypoplastic coronary artery disease (HCAD) was 61 years, while the age distribution among them ranged from 22 to 84 years. Nearly equal cases of right and left dominance (33 and 31, respectively) were observed, with only 7 cases of co-dominance. Conclusions: HCAD may be considered underexplored in current published research, despite its potentially significant implications ranging to an increased risk of sudden cardiac arrest. The specific prevalence of HCAD among CAAs might be higher than previously reported, possibly reflecting better diagnostic accuracy of CCTA over classic coronary imaging. The absence of standard diagnostic and therapeutic protocols for HCAD underscores the necessity of a personalized approach for such cases.

BACKGROUND: The plasma level of antipsychotics and their metabolites depends on the activity of the cytochrome P450 (CYP) system in the liver. This research aims to test the individual response variability to atypical antipsychotic drugs, depending on the activity of the CYP2D6 enzyme. METHODS: In a prospective, noninterventional study, we included 56 adolescents, 51.79% male, diagnosed with schizophrenia. The patients underwent DNA sampling for genotyping SNP by RT-PCR and CYP* allelic variants using Applied Bio-systems™ TaqMan® Assays Foster City, CA, USA). and clinical and paraclinical assessments. The effectiveness of the therapy was evaluated with the PANSS scores at baseline and 3, 6, and 12 months after the initiation of an atypical antipsychotic treatment. RESULTS: Based on the genotyping results, the patients were divided into slow metabolizers (Group 1), extensive metabolizers (Group 2), and intermediate metabolizers (Group 3). The PANSS score showed a significant decrease in Group 2, compared to Group 3 after 3 (p = 0.02), 6 (p = 0.0009), and 12 months (p < 0.0001). The patients in Group 1 showed high PANSS scores, and those in Group 2 had fewer adverse reactions than the other groups. CONCLUSIONS: Assessing the CYP2D6 polymorphism may be useful in clinical pediatric psychiatric practice towards improving clinical results and patients' quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is one of the most aggressive forms of interstitial lung diseases (ILDs), marked by an ongoing, chronic fibrotic process within the lung tissue. IPF leads to an irreversible deterioration of lung function, ultimately resulting in an increased mortality rate. Therefore, the focus has shifted towards the biomarkers that might contribute to the early diagnosis, risk assessment, prognosis, and tracking of the treatment progress, including those associated with epithelial injury. METHODS: We conducted this review through a systematic search of the relevant literature using established databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Selected articles were assessed, with data extracted and synthesized to provide an overview of the current understanding of the existing biomarkers for IPF. RESULTS: Signs of epithelial cell damage hold promise as relevant biomarkers for IPF, consequently offering valuable support in its clinical care. Their global and standardized utilization remains limited due to a lack of comprehensive information of their implications in IPF. CONCLUSIONS: Recognizing the aggressive nature of IPF among interstitial lung diseases and its profound impact on lung function and mortality, the exploration of biomarkers becomes pivotal for early diagnosis, risk assessment, prognostic evaluation, and therapy monitoring.

(1) Background: Exposure to different sources of stress can have a significant effect on both psychological and physical processes. (2) Methods: The study took place over a period of 34 days and included a total of 40 animals. Regarding the exposure to chronic stressors, we opted for physiological, non-invasive stressors, e.g., running, swimming, and changes in the intensity of light. An unforeseen stress batch was also created that alternated all these stress factors. The animals were divided into five experimental groups, each consisting of eight individuals. In the context of conducting the open field test for behavioral assessment before and after stress exposure, we aimed to investigate the impact of stress exposure on the affective traits of the animals. We also monitored body mass every two days. (3) Results: The control group exhibited an average increase in weight of approximately 30%. The groups exposed to stress factors showed slower growth rates, the lowest being the running group, recording a rate of 20.55%, and the unpredictable stress group at 24.02%. The anxious behavior intensified in the group with unforeseen stress, in the one with light variations, and in the running group. (4) Conclusions: Our research validates the animal model of intermittent light exposure during the dark phase as a novel method of inducing stress. The modification of some anxiety parameters was observed; they vary according to the type of stress. Body mass was found to increase in all groups, especially in the sedentary groups, likely due to the absence of cognitive, spatial, and social stimuli except for cohabitation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The development of arterial stiffness (AS) in obesity is a multifactorial and complex process. The pleomorphic actions of adipokines and their local activity in perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) are potential modulators of AS appearance and progression. We aimed to assess the correlations between two adipokines (chemerin, adiponectin), PVAT morphological changes (adipocyte size, blood vessel wall thickness) and AS parameters in the special subgroup of patients with morbid obesity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We enrolled 25 patients with morbid obesity and 25 non-obese patients, who were age- and gender-matched, untreated for cardiovascular risk factors, and admitted to hospital for laparoscopic surgical procedures (bariatric surgery for morbid obesity and non-inflammatory benign pathology surgery for non-obese patients). Before the surgical procedures, we evaluated demographic and anthropometric data and biochemical parameters including the studied adipokines. Arterial stiffness was evaluated using a Medexpert ArteriographTM TL2 device. In both groups, adipocyte size and vascular wall thickness as well as local adiponectin activity were analyzed in PVAT from intraoperative biopsies. RESULTS: In our study, adiponectin (p = 0.0003), chemerin (p = 0.0001) and their ratio (p = 0.005) had statistically significant higher mean values in patients with morbid obesity compared to normal-weight patients. In patients with morbid obesity there were significant correlations between chemerin and AS parameters such as aortic pulse wave velocity (p = 0.006) and subendocardial viability index (p = 0.009). In the same group adipocyte size was significantly correlated with another AS parameter, namely, aortic systolic blood pressure (p = 0.030). In normal-weight patients, blood vessel wall thickness positively correlated with AS parameters such as brachial (p = 0.023) and aortic augmentation index (p = 0.023). An important finding was the negative adipoR1 and adipoR2 immunoexpression in PVAT adipocytes of patients with morbid obesity. Additionally, we found significant correlations between blood vessel wall thickness and blood fasting glucose (p < 0.05) in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Chemerin and adipocyte size could be predictive biomarkers for AS in patients with morbid obesity. Given the small number of patients included, our results need further validation.

Background and objective: Morbid obesity is accompanied by an increased cardiovascular (CV) risk, which justifies a multidisciplinary, integrative approach. Arterial stiffness has a well-defined additional role in refining individual CV risk. Given that echocardiography and carotid ultrasound are usual methods for CV risk characterization, we aimed to identify the imaging parameters with a predictive value for early-onset arterial stiffness. Material and methods: We conducted a study in which 50 patients (divided into two equal groups with morbid obesity and without obesity), age and gender matched, untreated for cardiovascular risk factors, were addressed to bariatric surgery or non-inflammatory benign pathology surgery. Before the surgical procedures, we evaluated demographics, anthropometric data and biochemical parameters including adipokines (chemerin, adiponectin). Arterial stiffness was evaluated using the Medexpert ArteriographTM TL2 device. Transthoracic echocardiography and carotid ultrasound were also performed. We also analyzed adipocyte size and vascular wall thickness in intraoperative biopsies. Results: Left ventricle (LV) mass index (p = 0.2851), LV ejection fraction (LVEF) (p = 0.0073), epicardial adipose tissue thickness (p = 0.0001) as echocardiographic parameters and carotid intima-media thickness (p = 0.0033), relative wall thickness (p = 0.0295), wall to lumen thickness ratio (p = 0.0930) and carotid cross-sectional area (p = 0.0042) as ultrasound parameters were significant measures in our groups and were assessed in relation to adipocyte size, blood vessel wall thickness and adipokines serum levels. Statistical analysis revealed directly proportional relationships between LV mass index (p = 0.008), carotid systolic thickness of the media (p = 0.009), diastolic thickness of the media (p = 0.007), cross-sectional area (p = 0.001) and blood vessel wall thickness. Carotid relative wall thickness positively correlates with adipocyte size (p = 0.023). In patients with morbid obesity, chemerin and adiponectin/chemerin ratio positively correlates with carotid intima-media thickness (p = 0.050), systolic thickness of the media (p = 0.015) and diastolic thickness of the media (p = 0.001). The multiple linear regression models revealed the role of epicardial adipose tissue thickness and carotid cross-sectional area in predicting adipocyte size which in turn is an independent factor for arterial stiffness parameters such as pulse wave velocity, subendocardial viability ratio and aortic augmentation index. Conclusions: Our results suggest that epicardial adipose tissue thickness, carotid intima-media thickness, relative wall thickness and carotid cross-sectional area might be useful imaging parameters for early prediction of arterial stiffness in patients with morbid obesity.

Considering that microbial resistance to antibiotics is becoming an increasingly widespread problem, burn management, which usually includes the use of topical antimicrobial dressings, is still facing difficulties regarding their efficiency to ensure rapid healing. In this context, the main objective of this research is to include new oxytetracycline derivatives in polymeric-film-type dressings for the treatment of wounds caused by experimentally induced burns in rats. The structural and physico-chemical properties of synthesized oxytetracycline derivatives and the corresponding membranes were analyzed by FT-IR and MS spectroscopy, swelling ability and biodegradation capacity. In vitro antimicrobial activity using Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains and pathogenic yeasts, along with an in vivo study of a burn wound model induced in Wistar rats, was also analyzed. The newly obtained polymeric films, namely chitosan-oxytetracycline derivative membranes, showed good antimicrobial activity noticed in the tested strains, a membrane swelling ratio (MSR) of up to 1578% in acidic conditions and a biodegradation rate of up to 15.7% on day 7 of testing, which are important required characteristics for the tissue regeneration process, after the production of a burn. The in vivo study proved that chitosan-derived oxytetracycline membranes showed also improved healing effects which contributes to supporting the idea of using them for the treatment of wounds caused by burns.

Background and Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has surprised the medical world with its devastating effects such as severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and cytokine storm, but also with the scant therapeutic solutions which have proven to be effective against the disease. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) has been proposed from the very beginning as a possible adjuvant treatment in severe cases. Our objective was to analyze the evolution of specific biological markers of the COVID-19 disease before and one day after a therapeutic plasma exchange session, how a change in these parameters influences the patient's respiratory status, as well as the impact of TPE on the survival rate. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, we include 65 patients with COVID-19 admitted to the intensive care unit department of our hospital between March 2020 and December 2021, and who received a total of 120 sessions of TPE. Results: TPE significantly reduced the following inflammation markers (p < 0.001): interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), fibrinogen, ferritin, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate. This procedure significantly increased the number of lymphocytes and decreased D-dimers levels (p = 0.0024). TPE significantly improved the PaO2/FiO2 ratio (p < 0.001) in patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (PaO2/FiO2 < 100). Survival was improved in intubated patients who received TPE. Conclusions: TPE involved the reduction in inflammatory markers in critical patients with COVID-19 disease and the improvement of the PaO2/FiO2 ratio in patients with severe ARDS and had a potential benefit on the survival of patients with extremely severe COVID-19 disease.

Lately, in the world of medicine, the use of polymers for the development of innovative therapies seems to be a major concern among researchers. In our case, as a continuation of the research that has been developed so far regarding obtaining new isoniazid (INH) derivatives for tuberculosis treatment, this work aimed to test the ability of the encapsulation method to reduce the toxicity of the drug, isoniazid and its new derivatives. To achieve this goal, the following methods were applied: a structural confirmation of isoniazid derivatives using LC-HRMS/MS; the obtaining of microparticles based on polymeric support; the determination of their loading and biodegradation capacities; in vitro biocompatibility using MTT cell viability assays; and, last but not least, in vivo toxicological screening for the determination of chronic toxicity in laboratory mice, including the performance of a histopathological study and testing for liver enzymes. The results showed a significant reduction in tissue alterations, the disappearance of cell necrosis and microvesicular steatosis areas and lower values of the liver enzymes TGO, TGP and alkaline phosphatase when using encapsulated forms of drugs. In conclusion, the encapsulation of INH and INH derivatives with chitosan had beneficial effects, suggesting a reduction in hepatotoxicity and, therefore, the achievement of the aim of this paper.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is a polymorphic condition, present throughout the world and involving children and adults. Multiple studies over the last decade have contributed to a better understanding of the natural evolution of this infection in various population groups, several reservoirs and transmission routes being identified. To date, acute or chronic HEV-induced hepatitis has in some cases remained underdiagnosed due to the lower accuracy of serological tests and due to the evolutionary possibility with extrahepatic manifestations. Implementation of diagnostic tests based on nucleic acid analysis has increased the detection rate of this disease. The epidemiological and clinical features of HEV hepatitis differ depending on the geographical areas studied. HEV infection is usually a self-limiting condition in immunocompetent patients, but in certain categories of vulnerable patients it can induce a sudden evolution toward acute liver failure (pregnant women) or chronicity (immunosuppressed patients, post-transplant, hematological, or malignant diseases). In acute HEV infections in most cases supportive treatment is sufficient. In patients who develop chronic hepatitis with HEV, dose reduction of immunosuppressive medication should be the first therapeutic step, especially in patients with transplant. In case of unfavorable response, the initiation of antiviral therapy is recommended. In this review, the authors summarized the essential published data related to the epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical, and therapeutic aspects of HEV infection in adult and pediatric patients.

Elastofibroma dorsi (ED) is known as a particular clinical and biological entity. We report a case of a bilateral elastofibroma dorsi (ED) in a 65-year-old female who presented to the Department of General and Oncologic Surgery of Emergency Clinical Municipal Hospital Timisoara, Romania. The patient was symptomatic on the right side, presenting pain in the interscapulothoracic region associated with a variable tumoral mass, dependent on the position of the right arm. Imaging studies revealed a well-defined, bilateral tumoral mass with alternation of the muscular and fatty tissue. The initial diagnosis of lipoma was taken into consideration based on the CT scan and clinical findings. Surgical excision of the right subscapular tumor was performed without any postoperative complications. Microscopic examination of hematoxylin and eosin, Masson's trichrome, and orcein stained slides revealed the diagnosis of ED. Considering the high rate of reported postoperative complications and the asymptomatic presentation of the contralateral subscapular mass, the patient underwent clinical and imagistic monitoring for the contralateral tumor. Due to its rare nature, ED is a difficult preoperative diagnosis that can, however, be suggested by its specific location and may require an accurate histopathological examination for a final diagnosis.

Giant cell tumor (GCT) is a locally aggressive tumor but with benignity features, representing approximately 18% of non-malignant bone tumors in European countries, with slight female predominance. Malignancy in GCT is rare, about <2% of cases and is more common at older ages. Is known that usually occurs at the epiphyses of long bones, but extremely rare may have another location, such as the pelvic bone. An atypical location - the posterior iliac bone, found at a 34-year-old male -, is the case report we studied and described. Starting from the patient's complains, like a mass in the left buttock region described as "recently appeared", firm, not-mobile, with no distinctive borders and no tenderness at palpation, and a recent history trauma, multiple investigations have been performed, which have highlighted an osteolytic lesion, close to the sacroiliac joint, only with infiltration of the gluteal, iliac and paravertebral muscles. The treatment of choice was hemipelvectomy, with wide tumoral resection, and selective embolization of the nutrient vessels 24 hours prior to the surgical procedure. At two years postoperative, we found a good functional result and the computed tomography (CT) scan revealed no signs of recurrence.

Angiogenesis is a physiological process involving the growth of new blood vessels, which provides oxygen and required nutrients for the development of various pathological conditions. In a tumor microenvironment, this process upregulates the growth and proliferation of tumor cells, thus any stage of angiogenesis can be a potential target for cancer therapies. In the present study, chitosan and his derivatives have been used to design novel polymer-based nanoparticles. The therapeutic potential of these newly designed nanoparticles has been evaluated. The antioxidant and MTT assays were performed to know the antioxidant properties and their biocompatibility. The in vivo antiangiogenic properties of the nanoparticles were evaluated by using a chick Chorioallantoic Membrane (CAM) model. The obtained results demonstrate that chitosan derivatives-based nanostructures strongly enhance the therapeutic effect compared to chitosan alone, which also correlates with antitumor activity, demonstrated by the in vitro MTT assay on human epithelial cervical Hep-2 tumor cells. This study opens up new direction for the use of the chitosan derivatives-based nanoparticles for designing of antiangiogenic nanostructured materials, for future cancer therapy.

The purpose of this research was to identify a possible correlation between the morphometric characteristics of fibrocartilaginous tissue in the intervertebral herniated disc fragment and the clinical and imagistic characteristics of patients with back pain. Sixty-two samples were included in this study. Intervertebral herniated disc fragments obtained during surgery (microdiscectomy) were analyzed histologically and morphologically. The analyzed fragment tissues from herniated lumbar discs were from L3-L4, L4-L5 or L5-S1 levels. The average number of chondrons encountered in a visual field was 35 (ranging from 8 to 51). The minimum chondrons surface area - 493.4 pixels² (from 188 to 925 pixels²) and the average peak area of chondrons - 5250.9 pixels² (ranging from 1171 to 11811 pixels²) and the median was 785.4 pixels² (values between 247.5 and 1621 pixels²). With age control, a correlation between the average chondron area and the Pfirrmann classification (r=0.413; p=0.014) was found but the correlation coefficient was small. The results of this study demonstrate that there is a correlation between the area of the chondrons and the clinical and imagistic characteristics. The Japanese Orthopedic Association Back Pain Evaluation Questionnaire (JOABPEQ) correlated with the chondrocyte area in the presence of a lumbar disc herniation with surgical indication. It should be taken into account that the variables considered only correspond to certain patients with degenerative lumbar discopathy.

Lung cancer high mortality rate remains a major problem, despite the actual progress in its early detection and therapeutic design. Since lung cancer' treatment requires separation of tumors in small cell carcinoma and non-small cell carcinoma, the histopathological diagnosis focuses on this basic distinction, while immunohistochemistry contributes considerably to confirm the diagnosis accuracy. In order to check the assumption that p63 is a useful marker for squamous cellular differentiation, we used two antibodies: anti-p63 and anti-thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1), based on their immunoexpression to differentiate small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) from poorly differentiated nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Our study included 48 cases of lung carcinoma (lung biopsies and wedge resection formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded). The 48 cases included 23 SCLCs and 25 poorly differentiated nonkeratinizing SCC. The expressions of p63 and TTF-1, respectively, proved to be useful in distinguishing SCLC from poorly differentiated nonkeratinizing SCC, on surgical and biopsic sections. The p63 positivity and TTF-1 negative expression consequently indicated a poorly differentiated nonkeratinizing SCC, while the opposite immunostaining pattern was flagged in SCLC. Our results are useful for a targeted therapy, as long as they point out a significant role in marking of the correct diagnosis of lung tumors.

Synovial sarcoma (SS) is a malignant soft tissue tumor representing 5-10% of all soft tissue sarcomas. Most synovial sarcomas are found at the extremities, especially in the lower limbs. A 28-year-old female presented at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, "Dr. Pius Brînzeu" Clinical Hospital, Timisoara, Romania, for evaluation of a mass located in the anterior region of the elbow. Imagistic, histological and immunohistochemically evaluations established the diagnosis of monophasic spindle cell SS G2. Block excision of the tumor with oncological safety margins was performed followed by total elbow arthroplasty. The patient then received radio- and chemotherapy. The case was followed-up at regular intervals for local recurrence and metastases and was free of symptoms at two years. Early diagnosis of SS, multimodal therapies and performing an arthroplasty of the elbow allowed the patient to resume daily activities. The unpredictable evolution requires regular follow-up for a long period of time.

Ki-67 parameter is a proliferation marker in malignant tumors. The increased proliferation activity and the decreased prognosis in lung cancer determined us to investigate different parameters connected to the tumor's aggression, such as cellularity, Ki-67 positivity rate, and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). We evaluated the proliferative activity in 62 primary lung tumors by determining the cell's percentage of Ki-67 and immunoreactive PCNA (using MIB-1 and PCNA monoclonal antibodies), classifying Ki-67 and PCNA immunoreactivity into three score groups. The results obtained emphasized a linkage between Ki-67 score with the histological tumor subtype, tumor cellularity and degree of differentiation and with other proliferation immunohistochemistry (IHC) markers, such as p53 cellular tumor antigen. The tumor's cellularity, the Ki-67 positivity rate and PCNA, together with the clinical stage and the histological differentiation bring extra pieces of useful information in order to anticipate the evolution and the prognosis of lung cancer.

Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a common pediatric malignant mesenchymal tumor, representing half of soft tissue sarcomas and approximately 5% of all cancers. We present the case of an adolescent male patient treated in our Department for a tumoral mass located in the middle third of the forearm. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and angiography-computed tomography (angio-CT) showed a large mass located in the muscles of the anterior compartment of the forearm. Surgical treatment consisted of tumor ablation including segmental resection of the radial and ulnar arteries and of the median nerve, followed by saphenous autograft vascular bypass. The treatment plan was based on tumor type, histological grading (high), age, tumor size greater than 5 cm, unfavorable location, postoperative tumor, node, metastasis (TNM) stage II, presence of microscopic tumoral tissue in the margins of the resected piece, lymph node metastases (N1) and bone metastases (M1) found on positron-emission tomography (PET)-CT according to the German soft tissue sarcoma study (CWS)-IV 2002 protocol. The chemotherapy used Carboplatin and Topotecan. Survival was less than two years after the initial presentation. Adolescent extremity masses should raise suspicion to exclude serious malignancy. Despite early diagnosis and use of multimodal therapies, alveolar RMS prognostic remains unpredictable.

Chondrosarcoma is a malignant hyaline cartilage forming tumor. It is a rare pathology, with an estimated incidence of one in 200 000 individuals per year. It appears in two forms: primary, representing 90% of all cases and secondary emergence that develops on preexistent lesions. Primary chondrosarcomas are uncommon in the hand, with a frequency of only 1.5-3.2% of all chondrosarcomas. In conventional chondrosarcoma (cCS), the histological malignancy grading represents the main prognostic factor for surgical planning and prognosis. We present the case of a 60-year-old male, examined in the First Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, "Dr. Pius Branzeu" Clinical Hospital, Timisoara, Romania, with non-specific symptoms in the right hand. After clinical examination and imagistics, surgery and histopathological examination of the tumor were performed. This showed a conventional well differentiated - G1 chondrosarcoma, as suggested also by imagistic and clinical context.

It was suggested that the decrease and/or loss of E-cadherin expression in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is responsible for the development of the malignant phenotype. Moreover, clinical studies showed that the reduced expression of E-cadherin is associated with tumoral differentiation, with the presence of lymph node metastasis and with unfavorable diagnosis of patients with NSCLC. In order to evaluate if E-cadherin expression is involved in the NSCLC pathogenesis and significantly associated with clinicopathological parameters, we investigated the immunohistochemical (IHC) expression of E-cadherin in 47 lung carcinomas with tumoral resection pieces in the control peritumoral lung tissue, looking for possible correlations between the expression of this molecule and the clinicomorphological features and the evolutive prognosis of the patients. E-cadherin expression was preserved in 10 (21.28%) of the 47 NSCLCs immunostained with anti-E-cadherin antibody and reduced÷absent in 37 of the 47 (78.72%) NSCLCs studied. E-cadherin plays a major role in the intercellular adhesion. The reduced expression of E-cadherin indicates an unfavorable prognosis and can be a useful prognosis factor in NSCLC - for patients with reduced expression of the E-cadherin÷α-catenin complex, needing chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
