RESUMO

There is a great effort from numerous research groups in the development of materials and therapeutic strategies for the functional recovery of patients who have suffered peripheral nerve injuries (PNI). In an article in vivo, the formation of a nerve bridge was observed, reconnecting the distal and proximal stumps, in the sciatic nerve of rats, indicating the effective participation of the biomaterial in the recovery of peripheral nerve injuries. For the current pilot study, 15 cases of multiple fractures of the mandible, with involvement of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) were selected and studied: JC (control cases) n = 6 with conventional treatment, and JT (treated cases) n = 9, with the use of biomimetic biomaterial. The evaluation of the return to sensitivity was measured through a self-assessment, where the patients assigned scores from 0 to 10, where zero (0) represented the complete absence of sensitivity and ten (10) the normality of the perception of local sensitivity. Patients were evaluated from the preoperative period to the 360th day. The statistical results obtained by the t-Student, Shapiro-Wilk normality and non-parametric One-Way ANOVA tests indicated statistically significant differences (p < 0.005; 0.005 e 0.5 respectively), between the two treatments, which were reflected in the clinical results observed, we also calculate the size of the effect represented by ϵ2, calculated by Cohen's d. The results indicate a great difference between the treatments performed,ϵ2 = 1.00. In the 6 cases followed up in the JC group, four remained with a significant deficit until the end of the evaluations and two indicated the remission of the lack of sensitivity in this period. In the JT group, in 28 days, all cases indicated complete remission of the lack of sensitivity with healing concentration. In one of the cases where there was a complete rupture of the mental nerve, the (score-10) was observed in 60 days. The observed results indicate the existence of a statistical significance between the groups and an important relationship when using the biomimetic biomaterial during the recovery of the perception of sensitivity in polytraumatized patients, compatible with the results observed in laboratory animals, which may indicate its clinical feasibility in the reduction of sequelae in PNI.

RESUMO

FERMI is a seeded free-electron laser (FEL) facility located at the Elettra laboratory in Trieste, Italy, and is now in user operation with its first FEL line, FEL-1, covering the wavelength range between 100 and 20 nm. The second FEL line, FEL-2, a high-gain harmonic generation double-stage cascade covering the wavelength range 20-4 nm, has also completed commissioning and the first user call has been recently opened. An overview of the typical operating modes of the facility is presented.

INTRODUCTION: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become an innovative and somewhat crucial tool for analyzing relationships between public health data and environment. This study, though focusing on a Local Health Unit of northeastern Italy, could be taken as a benchmark for developing a standardized national data-acquiring format, providing a step-by-step instructions on the manipulation of address elements specific for Italian language and traditions. METHODS: Geocoding analysis was carried out on a health database comprising 268,517 records of the Local Health Unit of Rovigo in the Veneto region, covering a period of 10 years, starting from 2001 up to 2010. The Map Service provided by the Environmental Research System Institute (ESRI, Redlands, CA), and ArcMap 10.0 by ESRI(®) were, respectively, the reference data and the GIS software, employed in the geocoding process. RESULTS: The first attempt of geocoding produced a poor quality result, having about 40% of the addresses matched. A procedure of manual standardization was performed in order to enhance the quality of the results, consequently a set of guiding principle were expounded which should be pursued for geocoding health data. High-level geocoding detail will provide a more precise geographic representation of health related events. CONCLUSIONS: The main achievement of this study was to outline some of the difficulties encountered during the geocoding of health data and to put forward a set of guidelines, which could be useful to facilitate the process and enhance the quality of the results. Public health informatics represents an emerging specialty that highlights on the application of information science and technology to public health practice and research. Therefore, this study could draw the attention of the National Health Service to the underestimated problem of geocoding accuracy in health related data for environmental risk assessment.

RESUMO

The proteodermatan sulfate (PDS) of bovine skin is a low molecular weight proteoglycan with a molecular structure consisting of a protein chain and a sulfated polysaccharide chain covalently linked at the 4-serine of the protein. Static and dynamic laser light scattering methods have been used to determine the weight-average molecular weight, Mw, zeta-average radius of gyration, Rg zeta, and zeta-average translational diffusion coefficient, Dto, zeta, of bovine skin PDS. We have also characterized the two components of PDS, i.e., the protein core and the dermatan sulfate (DS) chain. (The latter contained an N-terminal-linked penta- or tetrapeptide.) Interpretation of the PDS data is complicated by the block copolymer nature of its structure. When appropriate corrections are made, our results indicate that Mw for PDS monomer is 62,000 when dissolved in 4M guanidine hydrochloride (GdnHCl), and increases to 610,000 in 0.15M NaCl. Mw for the core protein in 4M GdnHCl is 39,000, and this also increases substantially to 650,000 in 0.15M NaCl. In contrast, Mw for the DS chain is 24,000 in 0.15M NaCl, indicating that there is minimal self-association of DS in 0.15M NaCl. Thus we conclude that the self-association of PDS involves the protein core. Comparison of Rg zeta and Rh, the average hydrodynamic radius, suggests that trace amounts of aggregation persist for the PDS and its core protein even in 4M GdnHCl. This conclusion is supported by evaluation of the second moments of the dynamic light scattering correlation function. Comparisons of the observed Dto, zeta for PDS with predicted values using hydrodynamic theory are consistent with a "lollipop" conformation for the molecule.
