Since the beginning of the pandemic, SARS-CoV-2 has shown genetic variability. All the variants that have sustained pandemic waves have shown several mutations, especially in the Spike protein that could affect viral pathogenesis. A total of 15,729 respiratory samples, collected between December 2020 and August 2022, have been included in this study. We report the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 variants in the Lombardy region, Italy, in a 2-year study period. Alpha, Delta, and Omicron variants became predominant causing the majority of cases whereas Beta or Gamma variants mostly caused local outbreaks. Next-generation sequencing revealed several mutations and few deletions in all of the main variants. For example, 147 mutations were observed in the Spike protein of Omicron sublineages; 20% of these mutations occurred in the receptor-binding domain region.

Postnatal human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection in newborns is well characterized for preterm infants but less so for term infants. We sought to analyze the rates and routes of HCMV transmission in full-term infants during the first year of life. A cohort of 120 HCMV seropositive mothers and their 122 newborns were tested after delivery for HCMV-DNA shedding in different bodily fluids. Postnatal HCMV infection was defined as the detection of >2.5 × 102 HCMV-DNA copies/mL in infants' saliva swabs. Maternal neutralizing antibody serum titer, HCMV-specific T-cell response, and HCMV glycoprotein B immunoglobulin G on breastmilk were analyzed. HCMV shedding was detected in 67 of 120 mothers (55.8%), and 20 of 122 infants (16.4%) developed HCMV infection within the first 3 months of life. Six additional infants were infected during the first year, for a postnatal infection rate of 21.3%. Viral shedding was more frequent in breastmilk than saliva, urine, and vaginal secretions, and the mothers of infected infants showed higher levels of HCMV-DNA in milk. No association was found between the antibody levels in serum or milk and maternal viral shedding, whereas a slightly lower frequency of HCMV-specific CD4+ T-cells with long-term memory phenotype was observed in women with HCM-DNA-positive milk. About one out of five infants develop HCMV infection within the first year of life. Breastmilk appears the major route of transmission of the infection, maternal saliva has a minor role whereas the role of vaginal secretions is negligible.

Background: A relevant proportion of immunocompromised patients did not reach a detectable seroconversion after a full primary vaccination cycle against SARS-CoV-2. The effect of different immunosuppressants and the potential risks for SARS-CoV-2 infection in these subjects is largely unknown. Methods: Patients from the Rivalsa prospective, observational cohort study with planned anti SARS-CoV-2 third dose mRNA vaccination between October and December 2021 were asked to participate to this follow-up study. Patients were asked about eventual confirmed positivity to SARS-CoV-2 infection within 6 months from the third dose and to undergo a blood draw to evaluate seroconversion status after the additional vaccine shot. Results: 19 out of 114 patients taking part in the survey developed a confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection; we identified mycophenolate treatment as an independent predictor of an increased risk of infection even after the third vaccine dose (OR: 5.20, 95% CI: 1.70-20.00, p=0.0053). This result is in agreement with the in vitro evidence that MMF impairs both B and T lymphocytes driven immune responses (reduction both in memory B cells producing anti-spike antibodies and in proliferating CD4+ and CD8+ T cells). Conclusions: Immunocompromised patients need an additional vaccine administration to reach a detectable seroconversion, thus fostering a more personalized approach to their clinical management. Moreover, patients undergoing mycophenolate treatment show a specific increased infection risk, with respect to other immunosuppressants thus supporting a closer monitoring of their health status.

BACKGROUND: Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is still one of the major concerning infection in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients. Letermovir (LTV) has been recently introduced for HCMV prophylaxis in adult patients who received allogeneic HSCT. However, many aspects related to immune reconstitution need to be further explored. The aim of this study was to define the prognostic role of HCMV-specific T-cell frequency measured at the end of LTV prophylaxis in predicting the risk for clinically significant HCMV infection (i.e. infection requiring antiviral treatment) after the stop of the prophylaxis. METHODS: Sixty-six adult patients who underwent allogeneic HSCT were enrolled and HCMV DNAemia was prospectively monitored. Additionally, HCMV-specific T-cell response was evaluated using ELISpot assay against two different antigens (HCMV infected cell lysate and pp65 peptide pool). RESULTS: Ten patients (15.2%) developed at least one positive HCMV DNAemia episode during LTV prophylaxis, whereas 50/66 (75.8%) patients developed at least one positive HCMV DNA event after LTV prophylaxis. Of note, 25 of them (50%) experienced a clinically significant HCMV infection. The median HCMV-specific T-cell response measured against HCMV lysate but not against pp65 peptide pool was lower in patients who developed HCMV clinically significant infection after prophylaxis. A ROC analysis revealed that the level of 0.04 HCMV-specific T cells/µl should be used as cut-off for development of clinically significant HCMV reactivation after prophylaxis. CONCLUSION: Assessment of HCMV-specific immunity upon discontinuation of universal prophylaxis with LTV should be considered as a method for identification of patients at risk for clinically significant HCMV infection.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women are more susceptible to severe disease associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. We performed a prospective study to analyze the inflammatory and immune profile after SARS-CoV-2 infection occurring in vaccinated or non-vaccinated pregnant women and their newborns. METHODS: Twenty-five pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 infection were enrolled, and sixteen cord blood samples were obtained at delivery. RESULTS: We observed that IL-1ß, TNF-α, Eotaxin, MIB-1ß, VEGF, IL-15, IL-2, IL-5, IL-9, IL-10 and IL-1ra levels were significantly higher in vaccinated than non-vaccinated mothers. Furthermore, the newborns of the vaccinated mothers produced higher levels of IL-7, IL-5 and IL-12 compared to the newborns of non-vaccinated mothers. Anti-Spike (S) IgG levels were significantly higher in all vaccinated mothers and their newborns compared to the non-vaccinated group. We found that 87.5% of vaccinated women and 66.6% of non-vaccinated women mounted an S-specific T-cell response quantified by ELISpot assay. Moreover, 75.0% of vaccinated mothers and 38.4% of non-vaccinated mothers showed S-specific CD4+ T-cell proliferative response. The T-helper subset response was restricted to CD4+ Th1 in both vaccinated and non-vaccinated women. CONCLUSION: A higher level of cytokines, IgG antibodies and memory T cells was noted in the vaccinated women. Furthermore, the maternal IgG antibody trans-placental transfer occurred more frequently in vaccinated mothers and may protect the newborn.

This multicenter observational study included 171 COVID-19 adult patients hospitalized in the ICUs of nine hospitals in Lombardy (Northern Italy) from December, 1st 2021, to February, 9th 2022. During the study period, the Delta/Omicron variant ratio of cases decreased with a delay of two weeks in ICU patients compared to that in the community; a higher proportion of COVID-19 unvaccinated patients was infected by Delta than by Omicron whereas a higher rate of COVID-19 boosted patients was Omicron-infected. A higher number of comorbidities and a higher comorbidity score in ICU critically COVID-19 inpatients was positively associated with the Omicron infection as well in vaccinated individuals. Although people infected by Omicron have a lower risk of severe disease than those infected by Delta variant, the outcome, including the risk of ICU admission and the need for mechanical ventilation due to infection by Omicron versus Delta, remains uncertain. The continuous monitoring of the circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants remains a milestone to counteract this pandemic.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection represents a major complication for solid organ transplant recipients. The aim of this study was to verify if the measurement of HCMV-specific T-cells could help to identify patients protected against HCMV disease cytokine flow cytometry using infected dendritic cells as stimulus (CFC-iDC, which discriminates between CD4+ and CD8+ T cells), and ELISPOT, using infected cell lysate (ELISPOT-iCL) or pp65 (ELISPOT-pp65) as stimulus, were adopted. Among the 47 kidney transplant recipients (KTR) enrolled, 29 had a self-resolving HCMV infection (Controllers) and 18 required antiviral treatment (Non-Controllers). HCMV-specific T-cell frequency at the peak of HCMV infection identified Controllers and Non-Controllers, although the diagnostic performance of CD8+ CFC-iDC (area under the curve [AUC] of the receiver-operator characteristic curve: 0.65) was lower than that of CD4+ CFC-iDC (AUC: 0.83), ELISPOT-iCL (AUC: 0.83) and ELISPOT-pp65 (AUC: 0.80). CFC-iDC detected a protective immune reconstitution significantly earlier (median time: 38 days) than ELISPOT-iCL and ELISPOT-pp65 (median time: 126 and 133 days, respectively). Time to protective immune reconstitution in Non-Controllers was significantly longer than in Controllers with the ELISPOT and the CD4+ CFC-iDC assays, but not with CD8+ CFC-iDC. The majority of patients did not require antiviral treatment after protective immune reconstitution, with the exception of five patients according to CFC-iDC assay, one patient according to ELISPOT-iCL assay and three patients according to ELISPOT-pp65 assay. Monitoring the HCMV-specific immunological reconstitution with is effective in discriminating KTR at risk of or protected from HCMV disease and the ELISPOT assays are suitable for implementation in the clinical setting.

The efficacy of pre-emptive therapy in the prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease and the potential association of CMV infection with the occurrence of chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) was evaluated in 129 lung transplant recipients receiving pre-emptive therapy based on pp65-antigenemia or CMV-DNA in the blood and in the bronchoalveolar lavage. Seventy-one (55%) patients received pre-emptive ganciclovir/valganciclovir (GCV/VGCV) for CMV infection for a median of 28 (9-191) days. Possible CMV disease occurred in six (5%) patients and was healed after the GCV/VGCV therapy. The cumulative incidence of CLAD was 38% and 54% at 5 and 10 years. Acute rejection and CMV load in the blood (but not in the lung) were independent predictors of the occurrence of CLAD. Pre-emptive therapy is highly effective in preventing CMV disease in lung recipients and does not induce a superior incidence of CLAD compared to what reported for other cohorts of patients who received an extended antiviral prophylaxis.

We reported the long-term kinetics of immune response after vaccination and evaluated the immunogenicity after a third dose of mRNA vaccine in 86 healthcare workers. Humoral response was analyzed by measuring anti-spike IgG and SARS-CoV-2 NTAbs titer; cell-mediated response was measured as frequency of IFN-γ producing T-cells and cell proliferation. Memory B cells secreting SARS-CoV-2 RBD-IgG were measured by B-spot assay. At three weeks after the third dose (T4), the frequency of subjects showing NT-Abs titer at the upper detection limit (≥640) was significantly higher than that observed at three weeks after the second dose (26/77; 33.7% vs. 9/77; 11.6%; p = 0.0018). Additionally, at T4, all the subjects reached positive levels of T-cell mediated response (median 110 SFU/106 PBMC, IQR 73-231). While the number of IFNγ-producing T-cells decreased between second and third dose administration, the T-cell proliferative response did not decrease but was sustained during the follow-up. Among T-cell subsets, a higher proliferative response was observed in CD4+ than in CD8+ population. Moreover, even if a decline in antibody response was observed between the second and third dose, a sustained persistence of memory B cells was observed. Subsequently, the third dose did not affect the frequency of memory B cells, while it restored or increased the peak antibody levels detected after the second dose.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women may be at an increased risk of developing severe or critical disease associated with the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection causing severities during pregnancy. We performed a prospective study to describe the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on pregnancy outcomes and on the newborn, depending on the severity of the disease. The antibody response and persistence of SARS-CoV-2 anti-Spike (S) IgG, IgA and anti-Nu- cleocapsid (NCP) IgG, was investigated. METHODS: A total of 48 pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 infection were enrolled, and sequential serum samples from 30 of them were collected until one year after infection. Outcomes of pregnan- cy and newborn parameters were evaluated in comparison with 200 uninfected controls. RESULTS: Asymptomatic infection was observed in 31/48 women (64.5%), mild COVID-19 in 12/48 women (25.0%), while 5/48 women (10.5%) developed pneumonia. Women with pneumonia mount- ed significantly higher levels of anti-S IgG, IgA and anti-NCP IgG between 1 and 3 months after onset of infection compared to asymptomatic women. Anti-S IgG persisted in the majority of women from 6 months to at least one year after infection, especially in those with symptomatic infection and pneumonia, while anti-S IgA and anti-NCP IgG declined earlier. Pregnancy complications and new- born parameters were not significantly different from those observed in uninfected controls. CONCLUSION: Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody development and persistence was not impaired in pregnant women, while SARS-CoV-2 infection did not cause major pregnancy or newborn complications in asymptomatic or symptomatic women, nor in women with pneumonia receiving prompt clinical care.

We compared the development and persistence of antibody and T-cell responses elicited by the mRNA BNT162b2 vaccine or SARS-CoV-2 infection. We analysed 37 post-COVID-19 patients (15 with pneumonia and 22 with mild symptoms) and 20 vaccinated subjects. Anti-Spike IgG and neutralising antibodies were higher in vaccinated subjects and in patients with pneumonia than in patients with mild COVID-19, and persisted at higher levels in patients with pneumonia while declining in vaccinated subjects. However, the booster dose restored the initial antibody levels. The proliferative CD4+ T-cell response was similar in vaccinated subjects and patients with pneumonia, but was lower in mild COVID-19 patients and persisted in both vaccinated subjects and post-COVID patients. Instead, the proliferative CD8+ T-cell response was lower in vaccinated subjects than in patients with pneumonia, decreased six months after vaccination, and was not restored after the booster dose. The cytokine profile was mainly TH1 in both vaccinated subjects and post-COVID-19 patients. The mRNA BNT162b2 vaccine elicited higher levels of antibody and CD4+ T-cell responses than those observed in mild COVID-19 patients. While the antibody response declined after six months and required a booster dose to be restored at the initial levels, the proliferative CD4+ T-cell response persisted over time.

OBJECTIVE: We compared the characteristics and outcomes of vaccinated and nonvaccinated patients hospitalized with COVID-19. DESIGN: We analyzed patients hospitalized in a COVID hub during three one-month periods: (i) October 15, 2020-November 15, 2020 (prevaccination peak); (ii) October 15, 2021-November 15, 2021 (Delta wave); (iii) December 15, 2021-January 15, 2022 (Omicron wave). To define the epidemiologic context, SARS-CoV-2 infection in healthcare workers was analyzed. RESULTS: SARS-CoV-2 infection incidence in healthcare workers was 146 cases per 1000 persons in 2020 (prevaccination) and 67 in 2021 (postvaccination, when the Omicron variant caused most infections). There were 420 hospitalized patients in the prevaccination period, 51 during the Delta wave (52.1% vaccinated) and 165 during the Omicron wave (52.9% vaccinated). During the Delta wave, a significantly higher number of nonvaccinated (29.2%) than vaccinated patients (3.7%) were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) (p = 0.019). Nonvaccinated patients were younger and had a lower rate of concomitant medical conditions (53.2% vs 83.7%; p < 0.001) during the Omicron wave when 80% of patients admitted to ICU and all those who died were still infected by the Delta variant. CONCLUSIONS: Vaccine effectiveness in fragile individuals appears to be lower because of a faster immunity decline. However, the Omicron variant seems to cause less severe COVID-19.

SARS-CoV-2 still represents a global health burden, causing more than six million deaths worldwide. Moreover, the emergence of new variants has posed new issues in terms of vaccine efficacy and immunogenicity. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the neutralizing antibody response against SARS-CoV-2 variants in different cohorts of vaccinated and unvaccinated subjects. Four-fold diluted sera from SARS-CoV-2 naïve and recovered subjects vaccinated with two or three doses of the BNT162b2 vaccine were challenged against 14 SARS-CoV-2 variants, and the SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibody titer was measured. Results were compared with those obtained from unvaccinated COVID-19 recovered patients. Overall, a better SARS-CoV-2 NT Abs response was observed in recovered vaccinated subjects after three doses of the vaccine when compared to unvaccinated patients and vaccinated subjects with only two doses. Additionally, the lowest level of response was observed against the Omicron variant. In conclusion, third doses of BNT162b2 vaccine seems to elicit a sustained response against the large majority of variants.

Rhinovirus is one of the most common respiratory viruses, causing both upper and lower respiratory tract infections. It affects mainly children and could cause prolonged infections, especially in immunocompromised patients. Here we report our data on a 15-month surveillance of Rhinovirus seasonality and circulation in Lombardy Region, Italy. All rhinovirus/enterovirus-positive samples were amplified with RT-PCR for the VP4-VP2 region to assign the correct genotype. The median age of RV/EV-positive patients is 9 years, with a range of 0-96. RV-A and RV-C were detected in the majority of cases, while RV-B accounted for less than 10% of cases. An enterovirus species was detected in 6.45% of the cases. A total of 7% of the patients included in this study had a prolonged infection with a median duration of 62 days. All these patients were immunocompromised and most of them were pediatric with an RV-A infection. Two outbreaks were identified, mainly in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and Oncohematology Department, caused by RV A89 and C43, respectively. Nearly 4.5% of the patients were admitted to the ICU requiring mechanical ventilation; all of which had preexisting comorbidities.

Letermovir (LTV), recently approved for the prophylaxis of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) reactivation after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), has been shown to decrease the rate of infection in the first months post-transplantation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of LTV prophylaxis on immune reconstitution and late-onset infection. We studied HCMV infection and HCMV-specific T cell reconstitution in 2 matched groups of HSCT recipients, those treated with LTV prophylaxis (n = 30; LTV group) and those receiving preemptive therapy (n = 31; PET group). We analyzed the rates of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), neutropenia, baseline disease recurrence, and overall survival in the 2 groups. Clinically significant infections necessitating preemptive therapy showed a similar rate in the 2 groups (PET: 21 of 31 [68%]; LTV: 17 of 30 [57%]; P = .434) but occurred significantly later (after prophylaxis discontinuation) in the LTV group. There was no between-group difference in peak HCMV DNAemia level (P = .232). HCMV-specific T cell recovery was delayed by approximately 100 days in the LTV group. HCMV-specific CD4 and CD8 T cell counts were significantly lower in the LTV group at days 120 to 360 and days 90 to 120, respectively. A lower rate of chronic GVHD (P = .024) was seen in the LTV group. Time to engraftment, rate of disease relapse, and 1-year survival were not different between the 2 groups, whereas trends toward a lower rate of neutropenia (P = .124) and a higher rate of acute GVHD grade III-IV (P = .103) were observed in the LTV group. Because LTV prophylaxis delays HCMV infection and HCMV-specific immune reconstitution, immunologic and virologic monitoring should be implemented after discontinuation of prophylaxis. The potential effect of LTV prophylaxis in reducing chronic GVHD should be evaluated in prospective studies.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the humoral and cell-mediated response to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) elicited by the mRNA BNT162b2 vaccine in SARS-CoV-2-experienced and -naive subjects against a reference strain and SARS-CoV-2 variants. METHODS: The humoral response (including neutralizing antibodies) and T-cell-mediated response elicited by BNT162b2 vaccine in 145 healthcare workers (both naive and positive for previous SARS-CoV-2 infection) were evaluated. In a subset of subjects, the effect of SARS-CoV-2 variants on antibody level and cell-mediated response was also investigated. RESULTS: Overall, 125/127 naive subjects (98.4%) developed both neutralizing antibodies and specific T cells after the second dose of vaccine. Moreover, the antibody and T-cell responses were effective against viral variants since SARS-CoV-2 NT Abs were still detectable in 55/68 (80.9%) and 25/29 (86.2%) naive subjects when sera were challenged against ß and δ variants, respectively. T-cell response was less affected, with no significant difference in the frequency of responders (p 0.369). Of note, two doses of vaccine were able to elicit sustained neutralizing antibody activity against all the SARS-CoV-2 variants tested in SARS-CoV-2-experienced subjects. CONCLUSIONS: BNT162b2 vaccine elicited a sustained humoral and cell-mediated response in immunocompetent subjects after two-dose administration of the vaccine, and the response seemed to be less affected by SARS-CoV-2 variants, the only exceptions being the ß and δ variants. Increased immunogenicity, also against SARS-CoV-2 variant strains, was observed in SARS-CoV-2-experienced subjects. These results suggest that triple exposure to SARS-CoV-2 antigens might be proposed as valuable strategy for vaccination campaigns.

The immunogenicity of severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 virus (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines in immunocompromised patients remains to be further explored. Here, we evaluated the immunogenicity elicited by complete vaccination with BNT162b2 vaccine in solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs). A cohort of 110 SOTRs from Northern Italy were vaccinated with two doses of BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine and prospectively monitored at baseline and after 42 days. Both SARS-CoV-2 naïve and recovered subjects were included. Humoral response elicited by vaccination, including SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies (SARS-CoV-2 NT Abs), was evaluated; additionally, ex-vivo ELISpot assay was performed for the quantification of Spike-specific T-cell response. Results were compared with those obtained in a cohort of healthy subjects. In a subset of patients, humoral and T-cell responses against delta variant were also evaluated. Less than 20% of transplanted subjects developed a positive humoral and cell-mediated response after complete vaccination schedule. Overall, median levels of immune response elicited by vaccination were significantly lower with respect to controls in SARS-CoV-2 naïve transplant, but not in SARS-CoV-2 recovered transplanted patients. Additionally, a significant impairment of both humoral and cell-mediated response was observed in mycophenolate-treated patients. Positive delta-SARS-CoV-2 NT Abs levels were detected in almost all the SARS-CoV-2 recovered subjects but not in previously uninfected patients. Our study supports previous observations of a low level of seroconversion after vaccination in transplanted patients.

The development and persistence of SARS-CoV-2-specific immune response in immunocompetent (IC) and immunocompromised patients is crucial for long-term protection. Immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection was analysed in 57 IC and 15 solid organ transplanted (TX) patients. Antibody responses were determined by ELISA and neutralization assay. T-cell response was determined by stimulation with peptide pools of the Spike, Envelope, Membrane, and Nucleocapsid proteins with a 20-h Activation Induced Marker (AIM) and 7-day lymphoproliferative assays. Antibody response was detected at similar levels in IC and TX patients. Anti-Spike IgG, IgA and neutralizing antibodies persisted for at least one year, while anti-Nucleocapsid IgG declined earlier. Patients with pneumonia developed higher antibody levels than patients with mild symptoms. Similarly, both rapid and proliferative T-cell responses were detected within the first two months after infection at comparable levels in IC and TX patients, and were higher in patients with pneumonia. T-cell response persisted for at least one year in both IC and TX patients. Spike, Membrane, and Nucleocapsid proteins elicited the major CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell responses, whereas the T-cell response to Envelope protein was negligible. After SARS-CoV-2 infection, antibody and T-cell responses develop rapidly and persist over time in both immunocompetent and transplanted patients.

BACKGROUND: Strain-specific antibodies to human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) glycoproteins B and H (gB and gH) have been proposed as a potential diagnostic tool for identifying reinfection. We investigated genotype-specific IgG antibody responses in parallel with defining the gB and gH genotypes of the infecting viral strains. METHODS: Subjects with primary (n = 20) or non-primary (n = 25) HCMV infection were studied. The seven gB (gB1-7) and two gH (gH1-2) genotypes were determined by real-time PCR and whole viral genome sequencing, and genotype-specific IgG antibodies were measured by a peptide-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: Among subjects with primary infection, 73% (n = 8) infected by gB1-HCMV and 63% (n = 5) infected by gB2/3-HCMV had genotype-specific IgG antibodies to gB (gB2 and gB3 are similar in the region tested). Peptides from the rarer gB4-gB7 genotypes had nonspecific antibody responses. All subjects infected by gH1-HCMV and 86% (n = 6) infected by gH2-HCMV developed genotype-specific responses. Among women with non-primary infection, gB and gH genotype-specific IgG antibodies were detected in 40% (n = 10) and 80% (n = 20) of subjects, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Peptide-based ELISA is capable of detecting primary genotype-specific IgG responses to HCMV gB and gH, and could be adopted for identifying reinfections. However, about half of the subjects did not have genotype-specific IgG antibodies to gB.
