RESUMO

In this study, livestock manure digestate (LMD) was used as feedstock for hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) at different temperature (180-260 °C) and residence time (0-4 h). Nutrient flow and distribution during the HTC process were evaluated by comparing the effects of livestock manure biogas slurry (LBS) and ultrapure water (UW) to determine the optimal reaction conditions for the synergistic production and application of hydrochars (HC) and aqueous phases (AP). Compared with UW, the HC yields derived from LBS as solvent were increased by 27.05-38.24% under the same conditions. The C content, high heating value (HHV), and energy densification of HC obtained from LMD and UW were higher than those obtained from LMD and LBS, and the ash content was lower. While, LBS circumstance improved the porosity, N content and some trace elements e.g. Ca, Fe and Mg in HC that showed excellent fertility potential. In addition, the recovery rate of K, TOC, NH4+-N, and TN concentrations in AP were significantly higher in the LBS circumstance than in UW. The results show that the addition of UW is more favorable for fuel generation, and the HC obtained from LMD and UW at 220 °C has the potential to be used as a fuel. Whereas, the addition of LBS enhanced the potential of HC and AP for agricultural applications simultaneously. It is recommended to use HC and AP obtained from LMD and LBS at 240 °C for using as fertilizer.

RESUMO

This research conducted an environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate an anaerobic digestion-co-pyrolysis (ADCo-Py) system in which pyrolysis was added to traditional food waste (FW) anaerobic digestion (AD) systems to treat the solid fraction and impurities separated from FW. The solid fraction, including impurities such as wooden chopsticks, plastics, eggshells, and bones, is usually incinerated, while pyrolysis can be a viable alternative to optimize FW treatment. The environmental impact of ADCo-Py was compared with stand-alone AD, pyrolysis, and ADCo-INC (AD with incineration of separated solids). The results indicated that both ADCo-Py (-1.726 kg CO2-Eq/kgFW) and ADCo-INC (-1.535 kg CO2-Eq/kgFW) outperform stand-alone AD (-0.855 kg CO2-Eq/kgFW) and pyrolysis (-0.181 kg CO2-Eq/kgFW) in mitigating global warming potential (GWP). Additionally, pretreatments were found to have the most significant influence on GWP, ecotoxicity potential (ETP), and acidification potential (AP). The two-step pretreatment in ADCo-Py, including the separation of solids and drying, significantly improved the environmental sustainability of the system when compared with standalone pyrolysis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Emerging evidence indicates a connection between oxidative stress, immune-inflammatory processes, and the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. In addition to possessing potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, sulforaphane (SFN) has shown promise in enhancing cognitive function among individuals with schizophrenia. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of combined treatment with SFN in patients with schizophrenia who experience negative symptoms and its effect on the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the inflammatory marker, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (HsCRP). DESIGN: Forty-five patients with schizophrenia were recruited, who mainly experienced negative symptoms during a stable period. In addition to the original treatments, the patients received SFN tablets at a daily dose of 90 mg for 24 weeks. At baseline, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks, the participants were interviewed and evaluated. The reduction rate of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to assess each participant. The side effects scale of Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale (TESS) was applied to assess the adverse reactions. Additionally, the levels of the SOD, HsCRP, and other indicators were examined. RESULTS: The study findings revealed a significant decrease in PANSS negative subscale scores (P < 0.001). Furthermore, there was a significant increase in SOD activity and HsCRP levels (P < 0.001 and P < 0.05). Notably, the group of participants who exhibited a reduction in PANSS negative subscale scores demonstrated a significant improvement in HsCRP levels (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that SFN may potentially serve as a safe adjunctive intervention to improve the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. The potential mechanism by which SFN improves negative symptoms in schizophrenia patients may involve its anti-inflammatory properties, specifically its ability to reduce HsCRP levels. RESUMO

Composting is widely used to recycle a variety of different organic wastes. In this study, dairy manure, chicken litter, biosolids, yard trimmings and food waste were selected as representative municipal and agricultural feedstocks and composted in simulated thermophilic composting reactors to compare and evaluate the GHG emissions. The results showed that the highest cumulative emissions of CO2, CH4 and N2O were observed during yard trimmings composting (659.14 g CO2 kg-1 DM), food waste composting (3308.85 mg CH4 kg-1 DM) and chicken litter composting (1203.92 mg N2O kg-1 DM), respectively. The majority of the carbon was lost in the form of CO2. The highest carbon loss by CO2 and CH4 emissions and the highest nitrogen loss by N2O emission occurred in dairy manure (41.41%), food waste (0.55%) and chicken litter composting (3.13%), respectively. The total GHG emission equivalent was highest during food waste composting (365.28 kg CO2-eq ton-1 DM) which generated the highest CH4 emission and second highest N2O emissions, followed by chicken litter composting (341.27 kg CO2-eq ton-1 DM), which had the highest N2O emissions. The results indicated that accounting for GHG emissions from composting processes when it is being considered as a sustainable waste management practice was of great importance.

RESUMO

To investigate the effect of intermittent aeration on oxygen dynamics, organic matter degradation and main gas emissions, a lab-scale pig manure composting experiment was conducted with intermittent aeration (I_A, 30-min on and 30-min off) and continuous aeration (C_A). Although aeration volume and oxygen supply of I_A was only half of C_A, I_A could obviously enhance the oxygen utilization efficiency by 96.67 % and reduce energy dissipation for aeration by 50.87 %. Based on the comprehensive analysis of total organic matter, total carbon, total nitrogen, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin contents, there was no significant difference in organic matter degradation between I_A and C_A (p > 0.05). Moreover, a reduction of 21.71 %, 38.93 %, 44.40 % and 62.19 % of CH4, N2O and the total GHG emission equivalent as well as NH3 emissions was realized, respectively, in I_A compared with C_A. Therefore, adopting intermittent aeration was a useful strategy and choice for high-efficiency, high-quality and environment-friendly composting.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition, which is characterized by impairment in social interaction or communication and lack of flexibility of imagination and behavior. Acupuncture is one of the most common modality of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and has been used to treat various disease in clinical practice for more than 2000 years in China by correcting disharmony and dysregulation of body. It has sometimes been used as a treatment aimed at improving ASD symptoms and outcomes, but its clinical effectiveness and safety has not been rigorously reviewed. We will plan to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize the current evidence on the effects and safety of acupuncture for ASD. METHODS: The following databases will be searched: PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Embase, Wanfang Data, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, SinoMed, and VIP. Randomised controlled trials will be included to evaluate the effect and safety of acupuncture on patients with ASD. The primary outcome will be the core features of ASD. The risk of bias will be assessed by the Cochrane risk of bias tool. We will conduct a meta-analysis and sensitivity analysis, as well as a subgroup analysis if high heterogeneity is present, using Revman 5.3. We will use funnel plots to identify potential reporting biases. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation will be used to evaluate the quality of evidence. RESULTS: This study will be to assess the effect and safety of acupuncture for ASD. CONCLUSIONS: This study will assess the effect of acupuncture for ASD and provide reliable evidence for the choice of treatments. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The protocol will not need ethical approval because no issues of participant privacy exist. The results of this systematic review will provide evidence about the effect and safety of acupuncture for ASD. The results will be disseminated through peer review.

RESUMO

The comprehensive analysis of environmental risk for heavy metals in pig manure was essential for optimization of pyrolysis conditions and scientific utilization of pig manure biochars as soil amendment. However, in previous studies, the selected pyrolysis temperature points were limited and temperature interval was large, it's was difficult to accurately verify the effect of pyrolysis temperature on chemical speciation and environmental risk of heavy metals. Therefore, in this study, pig manure was pyrolyzed at 300-700 °C with a small interval of 50 °C to study the effect of pyrolysis temperature on characteristics and environmental risk of Cr, Mn, Cu and Zn in pig manure biochar. Results indicated that the characteristics of biochars (>500 °C) were relatively stable. The biochar obtained at 700 °C exhibited the largest surface area (8.28 m2 g-1) and pore volume (25.17 m3 kg-1), secondly is the biochar derived at 500 °C. The total percentages of exchangeable and acid fraction and reducible fraction decreased from 16.98% to 9.43% for Cr, 85.60% to 65.55% for Mn, 57.26% to 10.61% for Cu, 37.90% to 13.78% for Zn, respectively, suggesting that exchangeable and acid fraction and reducible fraction of Cr, Mn, Cu and Zn in pig manure were transformed into oxidizable and residual fractions after pyrolysis. The leaching rates, risk assessment code and potential ecological risk index values significantly decreased after pyrolysis and presented lower value at 500 and 700 °C. Biochars derived at 300-700 °C conditions posed no phytotoxicity with germination index >80%. Correlation analyses revealed that larger surface area, pore volume and pH values of biochars may help to immobilize heavy metals and reduce bioavailability. These findings demonstrated that bioavailability and toxicity of Cr, Mn, Cu and Zn in pig manure biochar were greatly reduced after pyrolysis and the optimum temperature was 500 °C considering energy cost.

RESUMO

With the advantages of high treatment capacity and low operational cost, large-scale trough composting has become one of the mainstream composting patterns in composting plants in China. This study measured concentrations of O2, CO2, CH4 and NH3 on-site to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of pore gas concentrations during mainstream large-scale trough composting in China. The results showed that the temperature in the center of the pile was obviously higher than that in the side of the pile. Pore O2 concentration rapidly decreased and maintained <5% (in volume) for 38 days or more in both the center and side of the pile and effective O2 diffusion occurred at most in every two contiguous layers. Pore CO2 and CH4 concentrations at each measurement point were positively correlated (0.436 ≤ r ≤ 0.570, P < 0.01) and the concentrations in the side of the pile were obviously lower than those in the center. The top layer exhibited highest pore O2 concentration and lowest CO2 and CH4 concentrations, and the bottom layer was on the contrary. No significant differences in pore NH3 concentrations between different layers or between different measurement points in the same layer were found. Therefore, mixing the center and the side of the pile when mechanical turning and adjusting the height of the pile according to the physical properties of bulking agents are suggested to optimize the oxygen distribution and promote the composting process during large-scale trough composting when the pile was naturally aerated, which will contribute to improving the current undesirable atmosphere environment in China.

RESUMO

To verify the optimal aeration interval for oxygen supply and consumption and investigate the effect of aeration interval on GHG emission, reactor-scale composting was conducted with different aeration intervals (0, 10, 30 and 50 min). Although O2 was sufficiently supplied during aeration period, it could be consumed to <10 vol% only when the aeration interval was 50 min, indicating that an aeration interval more than 50 min would be inadvisable. Compared to continuous aeration, reductions of the total CH4 and N2O emissions as well as the total GHG emission equivalent by 22.26-61.36%, 8.24-49.80% and 12.36-53.20%, respectively, was achieved through intermittent aeration. Specifically, both the total CH4 and N2O emissions as well as the total GHG emission equivalent were inversely proportional to the duration of aeration interval (R2 > 0.902), suggesting that lengthening the duration of aeration interval to some extent could effectively reduce GHG emission.

RESUMO

This study characterized some physicochemical and biological parameters to systematically evaluate the dynamics of oxygen supply and consumption during large-scale trough composting in China. The results showed that long active phases, low maximum temperatures, low organic matter losses and high pore methane concentrations were observed in different composting layers. Pore oxygen concentrations in the top, middle and bottom layers maintained <5vol.% for 40, 42 and 45days, respectively, which accounted for more than 89% of the whole period. After each mechanical turning, oxygen was consumed at a stable respiration rate to a concentration of 5vol.% in no more than 99min and remained anaerobic in the subsequent static condition. The daily percentage of time under aerobic condition was no more than 14% of a single day. Therefore, improving FAS, adjusting aeration interval or combining turning with forced aeration was suggested to provide sufficient oxygen during composting.

RESUMO

Inefficient aerobic composting techniques significantly contribute to the atmospheric methane (CH4) levels. Macro-scale models assuming completely aerobic conditions cannot be used to analyze CH4 generation in strictly anaerobic environments. This study presents a particle-scale model for aerobic pig manure/wheat straw composting that incorporates CH4 generation and oxidation kinetics. Parameter estimation revealed that pig manure is characterized by high CH4 yield coefficient (0.6414 mol CH4 mol(-1) Cman) and maximum CH4 oxidation rate (0.0205 mol CH4 kg(-1) VS(aero) h(-1)). The model accurately predicted CH4 emissions (R(2) = 0.94, RMSE = 2888 ppmv, peak time deviation = 0 h), particularly in the self-heating and cooling phases. During mesophilic and thermophilic stages, a rapid increase of CH4 generation (0.0130 mol CH4 kg(-1) VS h(-1)) and methanotroph inactivation were simulated, implying that additional measures should be performed during these phases to mitigate CH4 emissions. Furthermore, CH4 oxidation efficiency was related to oxygen permeation through the composting particles. Reducing the ambient temperature and extending the aeration duration can decrease CH4 emission, but the threshold temperature is required to trigger the self-heating phase. These findings provide insights into CH4 emission during composting and may inform responsible strategies to counteract climate change.

RESUMO

Characterization of the dynamic structure of composting particles may facilitate our understanding of the mechanisms of organic matter degradation during pig manure-wheat straw aerobic composting. In this study, changes in the size, shape, pores, chemical compositions, and crystal structures of pig manure particles during composting were investigated. The results showed that the median diameter (D50) decreased exponentially, while the particle aspect ratio and sphericity were unchanged, suggesting that particles were degraded uniformly along different radial directions. Pores had a mean diameter of 15-30 µm and were elliptical. The particle porosity increased linearly mainly because of hemicellulose degradation. Furthermore, the influence of particle structure variation on the first order rate constant (k) of organic matter degradation was corrected, which may facilitate the optimization of operation conditions. The k value was proportional to the reciprocal of D50 according to the specific surface area of particles, and it decreased with increased porosity due to the stabilized chemical compositions and crystal structures of particles. However, the applicability of these data to other composting materials should be verified.
