BACKGROUND: Benign gallbladder diseases have become a high-prevalence condition not only in China but also worldwide. The main types of benign gallbladder diseases include gallbladder polyps, acute and chronic cholecystitis, and gallstones, with gallstones being the most common, accounting for over 70% of cases. Although the mortality rate of benign gallbladder diseases is low, they carry obvious potential risks. Studies have shown that an increased incidence of benign gallbladder diseases can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and gallbladder cancer, resulting in a substantial disease burden on patients and their families. AIM: To assess the medical utility of the Configuration-Procedure-Consequence (CPC) three-dimensional quality evaluation model in modulating the prognosis of laparoscopic cholecystectomy patients. METHODS: A total of 98 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy in our hospital from February 2020 to January 2022 were selected as the subjects. According to the random number table method, they were divided into a study group and a control group, with 49 patients in each group. The control group received routine perioperative care, while the study group had the addition of the CPC three-dimensional quality evaluation. The postoperative recovery-related indicators (time to first flatus, time to oral intake, time to ambulation, hospital stay), stress indicators (cortisol and adrenaline levels), distinctions in anxiety and depression status, and the incidence of perioperative complications were compared. RESULTS: The time to first flatus, time to oral intake, time to ambulation, and hospital stay of the study group patients were obviously lower than those of the control group patients, with statistical significance (P < 0.05). On the 1st day after admission, there were no obvious distinctions in cortisol and adrenaline levels in blood samples, as well as in the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) scores between the study group and the control group (P > 0.05). However, on the 3rd day after surgery, the cortisol and adrenaline levels, as well as SAS and SDS scores of the study group patients, were obviously lower than those of the control group patients (P < 0.05). The study group had 2 cases of incisional infection and 1 case of pulmonary infection, with a total incidence of complications of 6.12% (3/49), which was obviously lower than the 20.41% (10/49) in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Implementing the CPC three-dimensional quality evaluation model for patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy can help accelerate their perioperative recovery process, alleviate perioperative stress symptoms, mitigate anxiety, depression, and other adverse emotions, and to some extent, reduce the incidence of perioperative complications.

Cyanobacterial blooms present substantial challenges to managers and threaten ecological and public health. Although the majority of cyanobacterial bloom research and management focuses on factors that control bloom initiation, duration, toxicity, and geographical extent, relatively little research focuses on the role of loss processes in blooms and how these processes are regulated. Here, we define a loss process in terms of population dynamics as any process that removes cells from a population, thereby decelerating or reducing the development and extent of blooms. We review abiotic (e.g., hydraulic flushing and oxidative stress/UV light) and biotic factors (e.g., allelopathic compounds, infections, grazing, and resting cells/programmed cell death) known to govern bloom loss. We found that the dominant loss processes depend on several system specific factors including cyanobacterial genera-specific traits, in situ physicochemical conditions, and the microbial, phytoplankton, and consumer community composition. We also address loss processes in the context of bloom management and discuss perspectives and challenges in predicting how a changing climate may directly and indirectly affect loss processes on blooms. A deeper understanding of bloom loss processes and their underlying mechanisms may help to mitigate the negative consequences of cyanobacterial blooms and improve current management strategies.

Purpose: To validate the adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) expression and distribution in human eyelid tissues and meibomian gland epithelial cells. Methods: Meibomian gland tissues from human eyelids were isolated by collagenase A digestion and cultured in defined keratinocyte serum-free medium (DKSFM). Infrared imaging was used to analyze the general morphology of meibomian glands. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and Oil Red O staining were used to observe the morphological structure and lipid secretion in the human meibomian gland tissues. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, western blotting, and immunostaining were used to detect the mRNA and protein expression and cytolocalization of ABCA1 in the meibomian gland tissues and cultured cells. Results: The degree of loss of human meibomian gland tissue was related to age. Meibomian gland lipid metabolism was also associated with age. Additionally, human meibomian gland tissues express ABCA1 mRNA and protein; glandular epithelial cells express more ABCA1 mRNA and protein than acinar cells, and their expression in acinar cells decreases with differentiation. Furthermore, the expression of ABCA1 was downregulated in abnormal meibomian gland tissues. ABCA1 was mainly localized on the cell membrane in primary human meibomian gland epithelial cells (pHMGECs), whereas it was localized in the cytoplasm of immortalized human meibomian gland epithelial cells (iHMGECs). The mRNA and protein levels of ABCA1 in pHMGECs were higher than those in iHMGECs. Conclusions: Meibomian gland tissues of the human eyelid degenerate with age. ABCA1 expression in acinar cells decreases after differentiation and plays an important role in meibomian gland metabolism.

OBJECTIVES: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a challenging global health threat, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. This study aims to determine the molecular characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility of 263 MRSA isolates in Zhejiang Province, east China. METHODS: From 2014 to 2019, a total of 263 MRSA isolates from bloodstream infections (BSIs) were collected from 6 hospitals in 4 cities in Zhejiang province, east China. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests were conducted according to the guidelines set forth by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). To characterize and analyze these isolates, multilocus sequence typing (MLST), staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) typing, staphylococcal protein A (spa) typing and virulence genes gene profiles were performed. RESULTS: The most predominant clone was ST5-SCCmec II-t311, which accounted for 41.8% (110/263), followed by ST59 (44/263, 16.7%). Compared with non-ST5-II-t311 isolates, ST5-II-t311 isolates were more resistant to erythromycin, tetracycline, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, and ciprofloxacin, but more susceptible to clindamycin. Moreover, the rates of multidrug resistance were higher in ST5-II-t311 isolates compared to the non-ST5-II-t311 isolates. In comparison to the non-ST5-II-t311 isolates, ST5-II-t311 isolates showed no significant difference in virulence genes detected. CONCLUSIONS: MRSA ST5-II-t311 clone has become the most predominant clone in Zhejiang Province, east China and has higher rates of multidrug resistance than other isolates, that should be kept in mind when treating BSI. Moreover, MRSA ST59 clone shows an upward trend and has begun to spread into hospitals. Our findings highlight the importance of epidemiological studies of S. aureus carriage in the eastern region.

Deoxynivalenol contamination in feed and food, pervasive from growth, storage, and processing, poses a significant risk to dairy cows, particularly when exposed to a high-starch diet; however, whether a high-starch diet exacerbates these negative effects remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated the combined impact of deoxynivalenol and dietary starch on the production performance, rumen function, and health of dairy cows using metabolomics and 16 S rRNA sequencing. Our findings suggested that both high- and low-starch diets contaminated with deoxynivalenol significantly reduced the concentration of propionate, isobutyrate, valerate, total volatile fatty acids (TVFA), and microbial crude protein (MCP) concentrations, accompanied by a noteworthy increase in NH3-N concentration in vitro and in vivo (P < 0.05). Deoxynivalenol altered the abundance of microbial communities in vivo, notably affecting Oscillospiraceae, Lachnospiraceae, Desulfovibrionaceae, and Selenomonadaceae. Additionally, it significantly downregulated lecithin, arachidonic acid, valine, leucine, isoleucine, arginine, and proline metabolism (P < 0.05). Furthermore, deoxynivalenol triggered oxidative stress, inflammation, and dysregulation in immune system linkage, ultimately compromising the overall health of dairy cows. Collectively, both high- and low-starch diets contaminated with deoxynivalenol could have detrimental effects on rumen function, posing a potential threat to production performance and the overall health of cows. Notably, the negative effects of deoxynivalenol are more pronounced with a high-starch diet than a low-starch diet.

Healthy freshwater ecosystems can provide vital ecosystem services (ESs), and this capacity may be hampered due to water quality deterioration and climate change. In the currently available ES modeling tools, ecosystem processes are either absent or oversimplified, hindering the evaluation of impacts of restoration measures on ES provisioning. In this study, we propose an ES modeling tool that integrates lake physics, ecology and service provisioning into a holistic modeling framework. We applied this model to a Dutch quarry lake, to evaluate how nine ESs respond to technological-based (phosphorus (P) reduction) and nature-based measures (wetland restoration). As climate change might be affecting the future effectiveness of restoration efforts, we also studied the climate change impacts on the outcome of restoration measures and provisioning of ESs, using climate scenarios for the Netherlands in 2050. Our results indicate that both phosphorus reduction and wetland restoration mitigated eutrophication symptoms, resulting in increased oxygen concentrations and water transparency, and decreased phytoplankton biomass. Delivery of most ESs was improved, including swimming, P retention, and macrophyte habitat, whereas the ES provisioning that required a more productive system was impaired (sport fishing and bird watching). However, our modeling results suggested hampered effectiveness of restoration measures upon exposure to future climate conditions, which may require intensification of restoration efforts in the future to meet restoration targets. Importantly, ESs provisioning showed non-linear responses to increasing intensity of restoration measures, indicating that effectiveness of restoration measures does not necessarily increase proportionally. In conclusion, the ecosystem service modeling framework proposed in this study, provides a holistic evaluation of lake restoration measures on ecosystem services provisioning, and can contribute to development of climate-robust management strategies.

Introduction: The clinical significance of persistent positive in Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) DNA level in patients receiving antiviral therapy is not well known. We investigated factors associated with persistent viremia (PV) in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) given 78-week entecavir. Methods: A total of 394 treatment-naïve CHB patients who had undergone liver biopsy at baseline and week 78 of treatment were analyzed in this prospective multicentre study. We identified patients with PV (above the lower limit of quantification, 20 IU/ml) after 78 weeks of entecavir therapy. Stepwise, forward, multivariate regression analyses of specified baseline parameters were apllied to identify factors associated with PV. Futhermore, we assessed the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in all patients using models of the risk of HCC development. Results: Of the 394 patients, 90 (22.8%) still with PV after 78-week antiviral treatment. Factors associated significantly with PV (vs complete virological response, CVR) were HBV DNA level ≥8 log10 IU/mL (OR, 3.727; 95% CI, 1.851-7.505; P < 0.001), Anti-HBc level < 3 log10 IU/mL (OR, 2.384; 95% CI, 1.223-4.645; P=0.011), and HBeAg seropositivity (OR, 2.871; 95% CI, 1.563-5.272; P < 0.001). Patients with PV were less likely to have fibrosis progression and HCC development than those with the CVR. Of the 11 HBeAg-positive patients with HBV DNA level ≥8 log10 IU/mL and Anti-HBc level < 3 log10 IU/mL at baseline, 9 (81.8%) had persistent positivity in HBV DNA level and 0 had fibrosis progression at week 78 of treatment. Discussion: In conclusion, HBV DNA level ≥8 log10 IU/mL, Anti-HBc level < 3 log10 IU/mL and HBeAg seropositivity at baseline contribute to PV in patients with CHB receiving 78-week antiviral treatment. In addition, the rate of fibrosis progression and the risk of HCC development in patients with PV were kept low. The pathogenicity of Staphylococcus epidermidis is largely attributed to its exceptional ability to form biofilms. Here, we report that mupirocin, an antimicrobial agent widely used for staphylococcal decolonization and anti-infection, strongly stimulates the biofilm formation of S. epidermidis. Although the polysaccharide intercellular adhesin (PIA) production was unaffected, mupirocin significantly facilitated extracellular DNA (eDNA) release by accelerating autolysis, thereby positively triggering cell surface attachment and intercellular agglomeration during biofilm development. Mechanistically, mupirocin regulated the expression of genes encoding for the autolysin AtlE as well as the programmed cell death system CidA-LrgAB. Critically, through gene knockout, we found out that deletion of atlE, but not cidA or lrgA, abolished the enhancement of biofilm formation and eDNA release in response to mupirocin treatment, indicating that atlE is required for this effect. In Triton X-100 induced autolysis assay, mupirocin treated atlE mutant displayed a slower autolysis rate compared with the wild-type strain and complementary strain. Therefore, we concluded that subinhibitory concentrations of mupirocin enhance the biofilm formation of S. epidermidis in an atlE dependent manner. This induction effect could conceivably be responsible for some of the more unfavourable outcomes of infectious diseases.

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Acquired brain injury is caused by traumatic or nontraumatic factors and causes changes in cognition. Several reviews have described the influence of the head-of-bed (HOB) elevation on clinical indexes such as intracranial pressure (ICP) and cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP). However, the conclusions were inconsistent. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effects of HOB elevation in the care of the patients with ABI. METHODS: Two researchers independently screened the literature and extracted data. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and the Chinese Biological Literature Database to collect eligible randomized controlled trials published after September 2021. Reporting quality and methodological quality of the included studies were assessed by using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis and the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. RESULTS : Eight studies were included in the meta-analysis. The results showed that, compared with the flat position, HOB elevation of 30° or 45° can significantly reduce ICP (mean difference [MD], -2.40 mm Hg; 95% confidence interval [CI], -3.19 to -1.61; P < .00001). However, there were no statistical differences in CPP (MD, -1.09; 95% CI, -3.93 to 1.75; P = .45), degree of disability at 90 days (relative risk, 1.01; 95% CI, 0.94-1.08; P = .83), and mean arterial pressure (MD, -0.44; 95% CI, -10.27 to 9.93; P = .93). CONCLUSION: Head-of-bed elevation of 30° can reduce ICP and maintain CPP, and may be an effective noninvasive nursing practice for the prognosis and rehabilitation of ABI patients. Owing to the lack of high-quality, large-sample randomized controlled trials, more rigorous trials are needed to support this conclusion.

PURPOSE: The ratio of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)/apolipoprotein B (apo B) is associated with all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events in chronic kidney disease patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the LDL-C/apo B ratio (LAR) and all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. METHODS: A total of 1199 incident PD patients were enrolled from November 1, 2005 to August 31, 2019. The LAR was used to divide the patients into two groups by X-Tile software and restricted cubic splines using 1.04 as the cutoff. The incidence of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events at follow-up was compared according to LAR. RESULTS: Of the 1199 patients, 58.0% were men, the mean age was 49.3 ± 14.5 years, 225 patients had a history of diabetes, and 117 patients had prior cardiovascular disease. During the follow-up period, 326 patients died, and 178 patients experienced cardiovascular events. After full adjustment, a low LAR was significantly associated with HRs for all-cause mortality of 1.37 (95% CI 1.02-1.84, P = 0.034) and for cardiovascular events of 1.61 (95% CI 1.10-2.36, P = 0.014). CONCLUSION: This study suggests that a low LAR is an independent risk factor for all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events in PD patients, indicating that the LAR may provide significant information when assessing all-cause mortality and cardiovascular risks.

Background and Aims: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) can cause liver fibrosis and lead to cirrhosis and cancer. As the effectiveness of antiviral therapy to reverse liver fibrosis is limited, We aimed to evaluate the effect of An-Luo-Hua-Xian pill (ALHX) on fibrosis regression in CHB patients treated with entecavir (ETV). Methods: Treatment-naïve patients with CHB were randomly treated with ETV alone or combined with ALHX (ETV+ALHX) between October 1, 2013 and December 31, 2020. Demographic, laboratory, and liver histology data before and after 78 weeks of treatment were collected. The Ishak fibrosis score (F) was used and fibrosis regression required a decrease in F of ≥1 after treatment. Results: A total of 780 patients were enrolled, and 394 with a second liver biopsy after treatment were included in the per-protocol population, 132 in ETV group and 262 in ETV+ALHX group. After 78 weeks of treatment, the fibrosis regression rate in the ETV+ALHX group was significantly higher than that of the ETV group at baseline F≥3 patients: 124/211 (58.8%) vs. 45/98 (45.9%), p=0.035. The percentage of patients with a decreased liver stiffness measurement (LSM) was higher in the ETV+ALHX group: 156/211 (73.9%) vs. 62/98 (63.%), p=0.056. Logistic regression analysis showed that ETV combined with ALHX was associated with fibrosis regression [odds ratio (OR)=1.94, p=0.018], and a family history of hepatocellular carcinoma was on the contrary. (OR=0.41, p=0.031). Conclusions: ETV combined with ALHX increased liver fibrosis regression in CHB patients.

Background: The key challenge in drug discovery is to discover novel compounds with desirable properties. Among the properties, binding affinity to a target is one of the prerequisites and usually evaluated by molecular docking or quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) models. Methods: In this study, we developed SGPT-RL, which uses a generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) as the policy network of the reinforcement learning (RL) agent to optimize the binding affinity to a target. SGPT-RL was evaluated on the Moses distribution learning benchmark and two goal-directed generation tasks, with Dopamine Receptor D2 (DRD2) and Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) as the targets. Both QSAR model and molecular docking were implemented as the optimization goals in the tasks. The popular Reinvent method was used as the baseline for comparison. Results: The results on the Moses benchmark showed that SGPT-RL learned good property distributions and generated molecules with high validity and novelty. On the two goal-directed generation tasks, both SGPT-RL and Reinvent were able to generate valid molecules with improved target scores. The SGPT-RL method achieved better results than Reinvent on the ACE2 task, where molecular docking was used as the optimization goal. Further analysis shows that SGPT-RL learned conserved scaffold patterns during exploration. Conclusions: The superior performance of SGPT-RL in the ACE2 task indicates that it can be applied to the virtual screening process where molecular docking is widely used as the criteria. Besides, the scaffold patterns learned by SGPT-RL during the exploration process can assist chemists to better design and discover novel lead candidates.

The anomalous past two years of the COVID-19 pandemic have been a test of human response to global crisis management as typical human activities were significantly altered. The COVID-instigated anthropause has illustrated the influence that humans and the biosphere have on each other, especially given the variety of national mobility interventions that have been implemented globally. These local COVID-19-era restrictions influenced human-ecosystem interactions through changes in accessibility of water systems and changes in ecosystem service demand. Four urban aquatic case studies in the Netherlands demonstrated shifts in human demand during the anthropause. For instance, reduced boat traffic in Amsterdam canals led to improved water clarity. In comparison, ongoing service exploitation from increased recreational fishing, use of bathing waters and national parks visitation are heightening concerns about potential ecosystem degradation. We distilled management lessons from both the case studies as well as from recent literature pertaining to ecological intactness and social relevance. Equally important to the lessons themselves, however, is the pace at which informed management practices are established after the pandemic ends, particularly as many communities currently recognize the importance of aquatic ecosystems and are amenable to their protection.

Forest is the main component of terrestrial ecosystems that harbors about 40% of the existing species on the earth. As a vital component of biodiversity, phyllosphere microbes in the canopy play a critical and unique role in maintaining plant health, improving host resistance, and influencing global biogeochemical cycle. However, the studies on the community structure of phyllosphere fungi in natural forests are scarce as compared to that on rhizosphere microbes. Consequently, we know litter about how phyllosphere fungi associates with leaf traits. In this study, we analyzed fungal community composition of canopy leaves of six dominant tree species (i.e., Pinus koraiensis, Tilia amurensis, Quercus mongolica, Acer mono, Fraxinus mandshurica, and Ulmus japonica), in a broad-leaved Korean pine forest of Changbai Mountain Nature Reserve in Jilin Province, using high-throughput sequencing. We compared the differences of phyllosphere fungal community structure and functional groups of different dominant tree species. Moreover, 14 key leaf functional traits of their host trees were measured to investigate the relationships between fungal community composition and leaf functional traits. We found that the dominant phyla and class of phyllosphere fungi were Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, and Dothideomycetes and Taphrinomycetes, respectively. Results of LEfSe analysis indicated that all the tree species except Ulmus japonica had significant biomarkers, such as the Eurotiomycetes of Pinus koraiensis and the Ascomycetes of Quercus mongolica. The main functional groups of phyllosphere fungi were pathotroph. The results of redundancy and envfit analysis showed that functional traits related to plant nutrient acquisition as well as resistance to diseases and pests were the main factors influencing the community structure of phyllosphere fungi.

Shrub is an important part of forest ecosystem. Exploring the species composition, structure and spatial distribution of shrub layer can lay an important foundation for further clarifying the mechanisms underlying species coexistence, biodiversity maintenance and community succession. In this study, species composition, spatial distribution, and species diversity of shrub layer were analyzed in 25 hm2 of Huangguan forest plot. A total of 20716 individual shrubs (with 10463 branches) were recorded in the plot, belonging to 54 species, 45 genera, 28 families. The status of dominant species in the shrub layer was not obvious, with all the importance values being less than 10. The diameter structure of shrub layer vegetation was inverted 'J' type. Shrubs showed aggregated distribution in the plot, with obvious altitude differences in spatial distribution. The diameter structure and spatial distribution of the nine shrub species with the largest abundance in the plot were consistent with the overall situation of shrub layer. With increasing altitude, the Shannon diversity index (H) and Simpson dominance index (D) did not change significantly, while the Pielou evenness index (E) decreased. Those indices decreased with the increases of the abundance of dominant species in tree layer, and E increased with the increase of the number of dominant species in sub-tree layer. The indices of H, D, E were significantly negatively correlated with soil total phosphorus (TP). The H index was significantly positively correlated with soil pH, and the E index was significantly positively correlated with soil total potassium. The shrub layer was rich in species, stable in community structure and well regenerated. The species diversity of shrub layer was mainly affected by the number of dominant species in the tree layer, soil pH, and TP.

In this study, the spatial distribution patterns of individuals with different diameter classes of dominant shrub Lonicera fragrantissima var. lancifolia and the intraspecific and interspecific relationships were analyzed in Qinling Huangguan Plot. The results showed that the diameter class structure of L. fragrantissima var. lancifolia showed a pyramid shape, with a wide bottom and a narrow top. The number of small-diameter class individuals was the largest, showing a good state of renewal and a stable growth, which was conducive to community renewal and succession. Based on Ripley's K function, using univariate and bivariate paired correlation functions, under complete spatial randomness model, heterogeneous Poisson model and antecedent condition model, all individual of the species and their diameter-dividing classes were mainly aggregated, and the aggregation degree decreased with the increases of research scale, and gradually tended to random distribution. Affected by habitat heterogeneity, diffusion restriction and negative density dependence, there was a positive correlation among different intraspecific dia-meter classes, and also a certain degree of no correlation, but without negative correlation. The interspecific relationship was complex. All types of association (no, positive and negative) were observed, but negative association and no association were dominated.

To explore the spatial distribution and intraspecific correlation of Quercus aliena var. acutiserrata, a domi-nant tree species in a 25 hm2 plot of warm temperate deciduous broadleaved forest in Qinling Mountains, the pair-correlation function g(r) was used to study the spatial pattern and intraspecific association. The results showed that the diameter class structure of Q. aliena var. acutiserrata was bimodal, with a large proportion of young trees (1 cm≤DBH<5 cm), indicating an increase population structure with good capability of regeneration. The abundance of middle trees (15 cm≤DBH<25 cm) was slightly more than that of big trees (25 cm≤DBH<35 cm) and old trees (DBH≥35 cm), but far less than that of young trees and small trees. The spatial distribution of Q. aliena var. acuteserrata was obviously altitude dependent, which mainly distributed in the middle and high altitude areas. Results of complete spatial randomness (CSR) model analysis showed that young trees, small trees, adult trees, big trees, and old trees were aggregated in the large scale (<60 m). Heterogeneous Poisson (HP) model was used to eliminate habitat heterogeneity. The results of HP model showed that the individual aggregation degree of each diameter class decreased, indicating that the distribution was affected by habitat heterogeneity. At the small scale (<40 m), spatial correlation was positively correlated between individuals with small diameter gap, whereas the spatial correlation was negative correlation and no correlation between individuals with large diameter gap. At large scale (>40 m), the spatial correlation was positively correlated between large-diameter individuals, but negatively correlated and unrelated between saplings and other diameter individuals. Our results indicated that biological cha-racteristics of Q. aliena var. acutiserrata and habitat heterogeneity were important drivers for the formation of population spatial pattern.

Carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus are critical macroelements in freshwater systems. Historically, researchers and managers have focused on inorganic forms, based on the premise that the organic pool was not available for direct uptake by phytoplankton. We now know that phytoplankton can tap the organic nutrient pool through a number of mechanisms including direct uptake, enzymatic hydrolysis, mixotrophy, and through symbiotic relationships with microbial communities. In this review, we explore these mechanisms considering current and projected future anthropogenically-driven changes to freshwater systems. In particular, we focus on how naturally- and anthropogenically- derived organic nutrients can influence phytoplankton community structure. We also synthesize knowledge gaps regarding phytoplankton physiology and the potential challenges of nutrient management in an organically dynamic and anthropogenically modified world. Our review provides a basis for exploring these topics and suggests several avenues for future work on the relation between organic nutrients and eutrophication and their ecological implications in freshwater systems.

Transcriptional co-activator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ), one of core modules of the Hippo pathway, involves inflammatory cell infiltration in the liver, but little information is available regarding its physiological function in the microglia-mediated inflammatory response. Here we revealed that activation of TAZ prevented microglia production of proinflammatory cytokines, indicating TAZ's importance in anti-inflammation. After translocation into the nucleus, TAZ interacted with transcriptional enhanced associate domain (TEAD) and bound to the promoter of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), whose blockage caused inability of TAZ to improve inflammation, implying that Nrf2 is a direct target of TAZ. Further analysis showed that TAZ induced Nrf2 nuclear translocation to enhance antioxidant capacity with attenuation of oxidative stress and the inflammatory response. Under inflammatory conditions, TAZ impeded mitochondrial dysfunction, as indicated by amelioration of ATP levels, mtDNA copy numbers, and mitochondrial membrane potential with an obvious reduction in mitochondrial superoxide, but this impediment was neutralized by blockage of Nrf2. TAZ hindered opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore, restrained release of cytochrome c from mitochondria into the cytosol, and was sufficient to rescue microglia from apoptosis dependent on Nrf2. Nrf2 acted as a downstream target of TAZ to repress NF-κB activation by enhancing antioxidant capacity. Collectively, TAZ might ameliorate the microglia-mediated inflammatory response through the Nrf2-reactive oxygen species (ROS)-nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) pathway.

Purpose: Parvovirus B19 (B19V) infection is a viral threat after kidney transplantation. It is mainly transmitted by close-contact inhalation of aerosolized viral particles. The risk of nosocomial spread of B19V in the transplantation ward is quite high. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of routine disinfection and the effectiveness of isolation measures in the wards of B19V-infected kidney transplant recipients. Patients and Methods: Throat swab samples of 19 kidney transplant recipients admitted to the isolation ward and three healthcare workers (HCWs) were collected for viral DNA detection. Routine disinfection procedures were performed twice a day in general and B19V isolation wards. Environmental surface and air samples were collected for viral DNA detection before and after disinfection. Results: A total of four patients were diagnosed with B19V infection and transferred to the B19V isolation ward, of which only two had positive throat swab samples. The other 15 patients and all HCWs tested negative for B19V. A total of 88 environmental surface and air samples were collected. Eight of the environmental samples collected in the B19V isolation ward before disinfection tested positive for B19V, while one sample tested positive after disinfection. In the general wards, all environmental samples collected before disinfection tested negative for B19V. All 24 samples collected from ambient air, whether in B19V isolation or general wards, before or after disinfection, tested negative for B19V. Conclusion: Existing methods of routine or terminal disinfection for air and object surfaces were effective in eliminating B19V from object surfaces and ambient air in the isolation and general wards. Material surfaces that are exposed to high frequency and easily contaminated by blood, body fluids, and indoor air were the focus of cleaning and disinfection. Nosocomial cross-infection of other immunocompromised patients and HCWs can be avoided if appropriate prevention and control measures are taken.
