RESUMO

Neuropilin-1 (NRP1), a transmembrane glycoprotein, plays an important role in the malignant progression of gliomas; however, its role in chemoresistance is not fully understood. In this study, we observed the effects of NRP1 on the stemness and chemoresistance of glioma cells and the mediating role of Yes-associated protein (YAP). We constructed NRP1 overexpressing LN-229 glioma cells. Cells were treated with recombinant NRP1 protein (rNRP1) and the YAP inhibitor Super-TDU when necessary. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was used to detect the sensitivity of cells to temozolomide (TMZ). Sphere and clone formation assays were performed to detect the sphere- and clone-forming abilities of cells. Western blotting was performed to detect cellular CD133, CD44, p-LATS1, and p-YAP protein expression. Immunofluorescence and flow cytometry were used to detect the subcellular localization of YAP and apoptosis, respectively. We found that both NRP1 overexpression and rNRP1 treatment enhanced self-renewal, TMZ resistance, and CD133 and CD44 protein expression in LN-229 cells. NRP1 overexpression and rNRP1 treatment also induced LATS1 and YAP dephosphorylation and YAP nuclear translocation. Super-TDU inhibits NRP1 overexpression-induced enhanced self-renewal and TMZ resistance in LN-229 cells. Our study suggests that NRP1 induces increased stemness in glioma cells, resulting in chemoresistance, and that this effect is associated with YAP activation.

Assembly of the adenovirus capsid protein hexon depends on the assistance of the molecular chaperone L4-100K. However, the chaperone mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we found that L4-100K was involved in the hexon translation process and could prevent hexon degradation by the proteasome in cotransfected human cells. Two nonadjacent domains, 84-133 and 656-697, at the N-terminal and C-terminal regions of human adenovirus type 5 L4-100K, respectively, were found to be crucial and cooperatively responsible for hexon trimer expression and assembly. These two chaperone-related domains were conserved in the sequence of L4-100K and in the function of hexon assembly across different adenovirus serotypes. Different degrees of cross-activity of hexon trimerization with different serotypes were detected in subgroups B, C, and D, which were proven to be controlled by the interaction between the C-terminal chaperone-related domain of L4-100K and hypervariable regions (HVR) of hexon. Additionally, HVR-chimeric hexon mutants were successfully assembled with the assistance of the 1-697 mutant. Structural analysis of 656-697 by nuclear magnetic resonance and structural prediction of L4-100K using Robetta showed that the two conserved domains are mainly composed of α-helices and are located on the surface of the highly folded core region. Our research provides a more complete understanding of hexon assembly and guidance for the development of hexon-chimeric adenovirus vectors that will be safer, smarter, and more efficient. IMPORTANCE Adenovirus vectors have been widely used in clinical trials of vaccines and gene therapy, although some deficiencies remain. Chimeric modification of the hexon was expected to improve the potency of preexisting immune evasion and targeting, but in many cases, viral packaging is prevented by the inability of the chimeric hexon to assemble correctly. So far, few studies have examined the mechanisms of hexon trimer assembly. Here, we show how the chaperone protein L4-100K contributes to the assembly of the adenovirus capsid protein hexon, and these data will provide a guide for novel adenovirus vector design and development, as we desired.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), causing the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has provoked more than six million deaths worldwide and continues to pose a major threat to global health. Enormous efforts have been made by researchers around the world to elucidate COVID-19 pathophysiology, design efficacious therapy and develop new vaccines to control the pandemic. To this end, experimental models are essential. While animal models and conventional cell cultures have been widely utilized during these research endeavors, they often do not adequately reflect the human responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Therefore, models that emulate with high fidelity the SARS-CoV-2 infection in human organs are needed for discovering new antiviral drugs and vaccines against COVID-19. Three-dimensional (3D) cell cultures, such as lung organoids and bioengineered organs-on-chips, are emerging as crucial tools for research on respiratory diseases. The lung airway, small airway and alveolus organ chips have been successfully used for studies on lung response to infection by various pathogens, including corona and influenza A viruses. In this review, we provide an overview of these new tools and their use in studies on COVID-19 pathogenesis and drug testing. We also discuss the limitations of the existing models and indicate some improvements for their use in research against COVID-19 as well as future emerging epidemics.

The usefulness of live attenuated virus vaccines has been limited by suboptimal immunogenicity, safety concerns or cumbersome manufacturing processes and techniques. Here we describe the generation of a live attenuated influenza A virus vaccine using proteolysis-targeting chimeric (PROTAC) technology to degrade viral proteins via the endogenous ubiquitin-proteasome system of host cells. We engineered the genome of influenza A viruses in stable cell lines engineered for virus production to introduce a conditionally removable proteasome-targeting domain, generating fully infective PROTAC viruses that were live attenuated by the host protein degradation machinery upon infection. In mouse and ferret models, PROTAC viruses were highly attenuated and able to elicit robust and broad humoral, mucosal and cellular immunity against homologous and heterologous virus challenges. PROTAC-mediated attenuation of viruses may be broadly applicable for generating live attenuated vaccines.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are of considerable importance in tumor progression by interacting with the tumor microenvironment. However, the hidden mechanism explaining how tumor cells interact with CAFs in the tumor mechanical microenvironment remains largely unknown. METHODS: We highlighted exosomes as the mediator modulating the interaction between liver cancer cells and CAFs under mechanical conditions. The normal hepatic stellate cells LX2 were exposed to the medium or exosomes from the HepG2 cells with or without fluid shear stress subjection, and the CAFs activation markers were checked. To further explore the potential role of PI3K, which is active in liver fibrosis, the PI3K inhibitor was used. RESULTS: The specific markers of CAFs, FAP, and α-SMA, increased in LX2 with subjection to the fluid shear stress-induced exosomes from HepG2 cells. In turn, the enriched IGF2 in the exosomes activated the IGF2-PI3K signaling pathway in LX2 cells. CONCLUSIONS: These findings reveal that fluid shear stress-induced liver cancer cells possess a stronger capacity to convert normal fibroblasts to CAFs than statically cultured liver cancer cells, and tumor-derived exosomes mediated the intercellular cross-talk between liver cancer cells and fibroblasts.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the genotype distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) in infected Uygur and Han women in Xinjiang, China; analyze the HPV16 E6 gene polymorphism site and relationship with the development of cervical cancer. METHODS: The HPV16 E6 sequence was analyzed using the European standard prototype to perform an evolutionary tree. HPV16 E6-T295/T350, G295/G350, and T295/G350 GV230 vectors were stably transfected into cervical cancer C33A cells to analyze the cell proliferation, migration and invasion, apoptosis by CCK8 and clonogenic assays, transwell and cell scratch assays, FACS experiments. RESULTS: The total HPV infection rate was 26.390% (760/2879), whereas the Uygur 22.87% (196/857) and the Han was 27.89% (564/2022) (P < 0.05). Among 110 mutations, 65 cases of E6 genes were mutated at nucleotide 350 (T350G) with the leucine changing to valine (L83V). Moreover, there were 7 cases of E6 gene mutated at nucleotide 295 (T295G) with aspartic changing to glutamic (D64E). When E6 vector(s) of mutations sites were transfected into C33A cells, they were found to promote cellular proliferation, migration, invasion, and inhibit apoptosis. T295/G350-E6 was significantly stronger than G295/G350 and T295/T350, G295/G350 was significantly stronger than T295/T350 (P < 0.05). The T295/G350 had the strongest effect on C33A cells and G295/G350 was significantly stronger than T295/T350 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The positive HPV infection rates differed between the Uygur and Han in Xinjiang, China, and the genotype distribution of infection was different. After transfecting C33A cells with different eukaryotic expression vectors, the T295/G350 mutation site promoted the proliferation, migration, and invasion of C33A cells to a greater extent than G295/G350; however, G295/G350 had a stronger effect than T295/T350.

OBJECTIVE: To re-evaluate the clinical efficacy of Longjintonglin Capsules (LJTL) in the treatment of chronic prostatitis with damp-heat stasis syndrome. METHODS: This multicenter real-world study included 1 352 cases of chronic prostatitis with damp-heat and stagnation syndrome treated with LJTL (3 capsules once, tid, 30 minutes after meals, for 2 four-week courses) in addition to routine treatment. Before and after treatment, we analyzed the NIH-CPSI scores, the scores of Chinese medicine symptom quantitative classification and changes in individual symptom scores, and observed adverse reactions to medication. RESULTS: The total effectiveness rate of LJTL was 93.64%. Compared with the baseline, the NIH-CPSI scores were significantly decreased after treatment (ï¼»24.27 ± 6.04ï¼½ vs ï¼»8.17 ± 4.21ï¼½, P < 0.05), and so were the scores on the pain symptoms (ï¼»9.63 ± 3.65ï¼½ vs ï¼»3.02 ± 2.23ï¼½, P < 0.05), voiding symptoms (ï¼»5.65 ± 2.15ï¼½ vs ï¼»1.62 ± 1.36) and quality of life (ï¼»8.96 ± 2.32ï¼½ vs ï¼»3.16 ± 1.89ï¼½, P < 0.05). The effectiveness rate of LJTL was 95.9% on the Chinese medicine symptom frequent urination, 90.4% on painful urination, and 91.4% scanty dark urine, with a total effectiveness rate of 82.4% - 95.9%, all with statistically significant difference in comparison with the baseline (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Longjintonglin Capsules combined with routine treatment can significantly improve the clinical symptoms of chronic prostatitis with damp-heat stasis syndrome, especially effective on the symptoms of frequent urination, painful urination and scanty dark urine. Besides, it recommendable for its antidepressant and antianxiety effects, and the effect of improving the quality of life of the chronic prostatitis patients with damp-heat stasis.

BACKGROUND: Xinjiang is one of the regions with a high incidence of cervical cancer, and the genetic variation of human papillomavirus may increase its ability to infect the human body and enhance virus-mediated immune escape ability. METHODS: Sanger sequencing of the HPV16 genome from 165 samples positive for HPV16 infection and phylogenetic analysis of the E1 and E2 genes revealed the gene polymorphism of HPV16 in Xinjiang. RESULTS: The results showed that there were 109 samples with variations in HPV16 E1, 48 sites with nucleotide variations (19 missense variations and 29 synonymous variations), and 91 samples with variations in HPV16 E2, 25 sites with nucleotide variations (20 missense variations and five synonymous variations). CONCLUSIONS: From the phylogenetic tree results, 149 samples were of the European variant and 16 samples were of the Asian variant. No African or North American/Asian variant types were found.

BACKGROUND: We explored functional correction training using the Functional Movement Screen (FMS™) tool. We also analyzed the effects of training on the injuries of athletes in a systematic review and meta-analysis of non-randomized clinical trials. METHODOLOGY: We collected twenty-four articles from PubMed, CENTRAL, Scopus, ProQuest, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, SPORTDiscus, Embase, WanFang, and CNKI that were published between January 1997 to September 2020. Articles were selected based on the following inclusion criteria: randomized and non-randomized controlled trials, studies with functional correction training screened by FMS™ as the independent variable, and studies with injury risk to the athlete as the dependent variable. Data conditions included the sample size, mean, standard deviation, total FMS™ scores, number of injuries, and asymmetry movement patterns after interventions in the experimental and control groups. Exclusion criteria included: conference abstracts, cross-sectional studies, articles with retrospective study design. RESULTS: Twelve non-randomized trials were included in the meta-analysis. The injury risk ratio of athletes after functional correction training was 0.39 RR (95 CI [1.50-1.93]; Z = 15.53; P < 0.0001; I 2 = 2.6%), indicating an improvement of athletes functional patterns. CONCLUSION: Grade B evidence indicates that functional correction training based on FMS™ may improve the functional patterns of athletes and Grade D evidence indicates that it may reduce the risk of sports injury. However, the true effect is likely to be different from the estimate of the effect. Therefore, further studies are needed to explore the influence of functional correction training on the injury risks of athletes. Protocol registration: CRD42019145287.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine whether ZNF582 gene methylation and tissue protein expression can be used as a tool with high sensitivity and specificity for cervical cancer screening. We analyzed the correlation between promoter methylation of ZNF582 gene and cervical cancer and high risk HPV16/18 infection. METHODS: Tissue samples of normal cervical or chronic cervicitis (n=51), CIN (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia) (n=35), and cervical carcinoma (n=68) were tested for HPV16/18 infection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We also detected the methylation status of the ZNF582 gene promoter in the same tissues by methylation-specific PCR (MSP), then analyzed the correlation between ZNF582 promoter methylation and HPV16/18 infection. Immunohistochemistry was used to analyze ZNF582 gene expression in 152 cervical tissues. We detected ZNF582 mRNA expression in cervical tissues (including cancer and non-cancer) by real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (qPCR). RESULTS: Among 93 high-grade cervical lesions (CINII and above) and cervical cancer samples, 57 cases were positive for HPV16/18 infection and 36 cases were negative. ZNF582 gene methylation occurred in 9 out of 51 cases in normal cervical tissues (17.6%), 16 of 35 cases in CIN tissues (45.7%), and 50 of 68 cases in cervical cancer (73.5%). The differences in methylation rate of the three groups were statistically significant (P<0.05). The ZNF582 methylation rate in the positive HPV16/18 infection group was 73.7%, while the negative group was 63.9%. Compared with normal tissues, ZNF582 protein was highly expressed in cervical cancer tissues, but mRNA expression was low. CONCLUSION: While ZNF582 protein is highly expressed in cervical cancer tissues, it was not sufficient for use as a standard for cervical cancer staging. On the other hand, ZNF582 promoter methylation had high specificity and sensitivity in detecting CINII and highly diseased cervical lesions and could be used as a diagnostic marker for cervical cancer of women.

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of Chinese medicine, Qiaoshao formula combined with dapoxetine was used for the treatment of premature ejaculation in a real-life setting. Nine hundred and five males diagnosed with premature ejaculation were reviewed in this retrospective cohort study. We divided the patients into two groups: dapoxetine alone and Qiaoshao formula combined with dapoxetine according to actual interventions provided to patients in clinics. The perceived intravaginal ejaculation latency time and the premature ejaculation profile measures markedly improved in both groups. However, in men with severe premature ejaculation (baseline perceived intravaginal ejaculation latency time <1 min) and those with baseline age ≤30 years, the perceived intravaginal ejaculation latency time was slightly but significantly longer with combined therapy than with dapoxetine alone (p < .05). Therefore, combined therapy involving the Qiaoshao formula and dapoxetine proved to safe as well as effective for treating premature ejaculation while prolonging the perceived intravaginal ejaculation latency time, which significantly improved the overall satisfaction of the patient and likely that of the couple.

BACKGROUND: Acute uncomplicated lower urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common bacterial infections. Patients usually present with dysuria, urinary urgency, urinary frequency, and suprapubic pain or tenderness. Approximately 150 million people are diagnosed with UTI each year worldwide. The high recurrence rate of lower UTI is a common problem of clinical treatment. The misuse of antibiotics has led to the emergence of a number of resistant bacterial strains. Thus, traditional Chinese medicine is considered as an alternative option for treating acute uncomplicated lower UTI. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Sanjin tablets (SJT) for the treatment of acute uncomplicated lower UTI, explore whether SJT can reduce or substitute the use of antibiotics, and reduce the recurrence rate in the treatment of acute uncomplicated lower UTI. METHODS/DESIGN: In this study, a randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, parallel control of positive drug, multicenter clinical study will be established. A total of 252 patients with acute uncomplicated lower UTI (syndrome of dampness-heat in the lower jiao) will be randomly allocated in the ratio of 1:1:1 to three groups: experimental group; control group 1; and control group 2. The experimental group receives Sanjin tablets plus levofloxacin tablets (LT) placebo; the control group 1 receives LT plus SJT placebo; and the control group 2 receives SJT plus LT on the first five days, SJT plus LT placebo on the last two days. Each group will be treated for seven days and followed-up 1-2 times. The primary outcome measures of effective rate and recurrence rate are symptoms. Secondary outcome measures of effective rate and recurrence rate are the urine leukocytes, bacteriology examination, and safety assessment. Outcomes will be assessed at baseline and after treatment. DISCUSSION: This study protocol will provide the research data of efficacy and safety of SJT for the treatment of acute uncomplicated lower UTI. The first aim is to determine whether Sanjin tablets can reduce the use of antibiotics; the second aim is to determine whether Sanjin tablets can substitute the use of antibiotics. The recurrence rate will be assessed after cured to determine whether SJT can reduce the recurrence rate. The results of this study will improve the rational use of drugs, especially the rational application of antibiotics. It will also enable safety evaluation from laboratory indices and adverse events, which will provide reliable evidence for clinical treatment. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03658291 . In recent years, obtaining RNA secondary structure information has played an important role in RNA and gene function research. Although some RNA secondary structures can be gained experimentally, in most cases, efficient, and accurate computational methods are still needed to predict RNA secondary structure. Current RNA secondary structure prediction methods are mainly based on the minimum free energy algorithm, which finds the optimal folding state of RNA in vivo using an iterative method to meet the minimum energy or other constraints. However, due to the complexity of biotic environment, a true RNA structure always keeps the balance of biological potential energy status, rather than the optimal folding status that meets the minimum energy. For short sequence RNA its equilibrium energy status for the RNA folding organism is close to the minimum free energy status; therefore, the minimum free energy algorithm for predicting RNA secondary structure has higher accuracy. Nevertheless, in a longer sequence RNA, constant folding causes its biopotential energy balance to deviate far from the minimum free energy status. This deviation is because of its complex structure and results in a serious decline in the prediction accuracy of its secondary structure. In this paper, we propose a novel RNA secondary structure prediction algorithm using a convolutional neural network model combined with a dynamic programming method to improve the accuracy with large-scale RNA sequence and structure data. We analyze current experimental RNA sequences and structure data to construct a deep convolutional network model, and then we extract implicit features of an effective classification from large-scale data to predict the pairing probability of each base in an RNA sequence. For the obtained probabilities of RNA sequence base pairing, an enhanced dynamic programming method is applied to obtain the optimal RNA secondary structure. Results indicate that our proposed method is superior to the common RNA secondary structure prediction algorithms in predicting three benchmark RNA families. Based on the characteristics of deep learning algorithm, it can be inferred that the method proposed in this paper has a 30% higher prediction success rate when compared with other algorithms, which will be needed as the amount of real RNA structure data increases in the future.

BACKGROUND: Xinjiang is one of the areas with the highest incidence of cervical cancer in China. Genetic variation in Human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) may increase the ability of the virus to mediate carcinogenesis and immune escape, which are risk factors for the progression of cervical cancer. We investigated polymorphism in HPV16 and the distribution of its sub-lineages in the region by analyzing the E6, E7 and long control region (LCR) gene sequences from women with HPV16-positive cervical samples in Xinjiang. METHODS: A total of 138 cases of cervical lesions and squamous cell carcinoma with infection of HPV16 virus were collected. The E6 and E7 genes and LCR of HPV16 virus were sequenced and compared with the HPV16 European prototype reference and other HPV16 mutants for single nucleotide polymorphisms. Neighbor-joining phylogenetic trees were constructed using E6, E7 and LCR sequences. RESULTS: Fourteen missense mutations were found in the E6 gene; the loci with the highest mutation frequency were T350G (36/75, 48%) and T178G (19/75, 25.3%). In the E7 gene, the locus with the highest mutation frequency was A647G (18/75, 24%). A total of 33 polymorphic sites were found in the LCR, of which T7447C (39/95, 40.1%) was the most frequent. CONCLUSION: HPV16 in Xinjiang is mainly of the European variant, followed by the Asian variant type; no Africa 1, 2 or Asia-America variant types were found.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical efficacy and safety of Huanshao Capsules (HSC) in the treatment of ED with spleen and kidney deficiency. METHODS: This randomized open multicentered positive drug controlled clinical trial included 248 cases of ED with spleen and kidney deficiency, which were assigned to a trial and a control group of equal number to be treated with HSC at the dose of 3 capsules tid and Wuziyanzong Pills at 6 g bid, respectively, both for 4 weeks. We recorded and compared the IIEF-5 scores, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) symptom scores, and hepatic and renal functions between the two groups of patients before and at 2 and 4 weeks after medication. RESULTS: The clinical observation was completed in 240 of the patients. Based on the IIEF-5 scores of the patients, the total effectiveness rate was significantly higher in the trial than in the control group (76.6% vs 67.8%, P < 0.05). The TCM symptom scores were decreased by ≥95% in 14 cases (11.7%), ≥70% in 97 cases (80.8%) and ≥30% in 9 cases (7.5%) in the trial group as compared with ≥95% in 7 cases (5.8%), ≥70% in 84 cases (70.0%) and ≥30% in 29 cases (24.2%) in the control, with remarkably better improvement in the former than in the latter group (P < 0.05). Before and at 2 and 4 weeks after medication, the IIEF-5 scores were 13.04 ± 4.02, 15.95 ± 3.22 and 20.06 ± 2.17, and the TCM symptom scores were 16.64 ± 5.26, 10.08 ± 4.89 and 3.05 ± 2.18 respectively in the trial group, both significantly improved at 4 weeks in comparison with those in the control (P < 0.05). No abnormality was observed in urine and blood tests or hepatic and renal functions before and after treatment, nor obvious adverse events were found in the two groups of patients during the medication. CONCLUSIONS: Huanshao Capsules can safely and effectively improve the IIEF-5 scores and clinical symptoms of ED patients with spleen and kidney deficiency, and therefore deserve a wide clinical application.

Qianlie Tongqiao Capsule (QTC) is clinically confirmed to be efficacious and safe in treating lower urinary tract syndromes and bladder dysfunction that are induced by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). However, the functional mechanisms of QTC remain unclear. We aim to investigate the effects of QTC on both bladder weight and several growth factors in the bladder tissue of rats with testosterone-induced BPH. BPH in the rats was established through bilateral orchiectomy and subcutaneous administration of testosterone propionate (5 mg/kg) dissolved in corn oil. At the end of the study, all bladder tissues were collected and weighed, and a histological examination was conducted using H&E staining. Immunohistochemistry and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) were applied to detect the expression of nerve growth factor (NGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and transformation growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1) in the bladder tissue. The expression of Bcl-2 and Bax in the bladder tissue was tested by Western Blot and qRT-PCR. We found that QTC, especially when administered in high-dosages, had a significant inhibitory effect on bladder weight gain and overexpression of NGF, bFGF, and TGF-ß1 in rats with BPH. In addition, QTC downregulated and upregulated protein and mRNA expression of Bcl-2 and Bax in the bladder after prostatic obstruction, respectively. Furthermore, QTC balanced the Bcl-2/Bax ratio. Overall, these results reveal possible functional mechanisms of QTC in treating BPH-caused bladder dysfunction, and further studies are needed.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical effects of Huanshao Capsules (HSC) combined with levocarnitine (LC) on asthenospermia, oligospermia, teratozoospermia, and the semen parameters of the patients. METHODS: This randomized controlled clinical study included 186 infertility patients with spleen and kidney asthenia. We randomly divided them into three groups of equal number and treated them orally with HSC at the dose of 3 capsules tid, LC at 10 ml tid, and HSC+LC, respectively, all for 12 weeks. At 4, 8, and 12 weeks after treatment, we obtained the semen parameters from the patients and compared them among the three groups. RESULTS: Totally, 180 of the patients completed the study, 61 in the HSC, 59 in the LC and 60 in the HSC+LC group. After 12 weeks of medication, the patients of the HSC+LC group showed an increase of 42.77% in the semen volume, 142.37% in sperm concentration, 28.61% in sperm motility, and 24.39% in the percentage of grade a+b sperm and a decrease of 6.27% in the percentage of morphologically abnormal sperm as compared with the baseline (P <0.05). The patients treated with HSC+LC showed significantly more improvement in all the above parameters than those treated with LC alone (P <0.05) as well as in sperm motility and the percentage of progressively motile sperm than those treated with HSC alone (P <0.05). The HSC group exhibited remarkable improvement in the above parameters after treatment as compared with the baseline (P <0.05) and higher semen volume and sperm concentration than the LC group (P <0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Huanshao Capsulescombined with levocarnitinedeserves a wide clinical application as a safe and efficacious therapy forasthenospermia, oligospermia,and teratozoospermia.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the correlation between the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndrome differentiation and urodynamic parameters in benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). METHODS: Urodynamic examination was conducted for 152 BPH patients, who were divided by TCM syndrome differentiation into seven types, namely, kidney-yin deficiency, kidney-yang deficiency, aqueduct stagnancy, spleen-qi deficiency, lung-heat and qi stagnancy, wetness-heat down-flow and phlegm-wetness stagnancy. RESULTS: Of the total number of the BPH cases, 71 (46.71%) were differentiated as the type of kidney-yang deficiency, 40 (26.31%) as aqueduct stagnancy, and 14 (9.21%) as kidney-yin deficiency. Fifty-eight cases of Grade III-IV bladder outflow obstruction fell into the type of kidney-yang deficiency, and another 38 cases of the same grade along with 26 cases of Grade V-VI came under the type of aqueduct stagnancy. Of the 12 patients with very weak contractility of detrusor urine, 4 (33.33%) were attributed to the type of kidney-yang deficiency and 7 (58.33%) the type of aqueduct stagnancy. Among the 48 with weak contractility of detrusor urine, 27 (56.25%) fell under the type of kidney-yang deficiency and 17 (35.42%) the type of aqueduct stagnancy. CONCLUSION: The TCM syndrome differentiation of BPH is correlated with bladder outflow obstruction and detrusor urine contractility, which has provided corresponding evidence for the quantization and objectification of the TCM syndrome differentiation of BPH.

RESUMO

The present article reviews the progress in the experimental studies of traditional Chinese medicine for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in the recent years. Traditional Chinese medicine can inhibit prostatic hyperplasia, after the growth factor of prostate cell proliferation, regulate nerves and endocrine, and act on the kinetic factor (alpha-receptor) and static factor (augmented prostate) of BPH formation. We also investigate the selection of the animal model of prostatic hyperplasia. It has certain directive effect to further discover the action mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of BPH.
