RESUMO

Objective To analyze the clinical efficacy of microwave ablation in the colorectal cancer with simultaneously multiple liver metastases that was initially evaluated as potentially resectable. Methods The patients with potentially resectable colorectal cancer with simultaneous multiple liver metastases treated in the Department of General Surgery of the First Affiliated Hospital of Hebei North University, the Center of Minimally Invasive Therapy in Oncology of Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine in Dongzhimen Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, and the Second Department of General Surgery in the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University from October 1,2018 to October 1,2020 were selected in this study. The general data, pathological features, treatment methods, and clinical efficacy of the patients were collected.According to the treatment methods, the patients were assigned into a surgical resection group(conversion therapy+laparoscopic primary resection+hepatectomy)and a microwave ablation group(conversion therapy+laparoscopic primary resection+microwave ablation). The surgical indicators(operation duration, time to first postoperative anal exhaust, hospital stay, etc.)and postoperative complications(anastomotic stenosis, anastomotic hemorrhage, incision infection, etc.)were compared between the two groups. The survival period was followed up,including the overall survival period and disease-free survival period, and the survival curves were drawn to analyze the clinical efficacy of the two treatment regimens. Results A total of 198 patients with potentially resectable colorectal cancer with simultaneous multiple liver metastases were included in this study.Sixty-six patients were cured by neoadjuvant chemotherapy(FOLFOX or FOLFIRI),including 30 patients in the surgical resection group and 36 patients in the microwave ablation group(with 57 tumors ablated). After the first ablation,54(94.74%)tumors achieved complete ablation, and all of them reached no evidence of disease status after re-ablation.The microwave ablation group had shorter operation duration, less intraoperative blood loss, shorter time to first postoperative anal exhaust, shorter time of taking a liquid diet, shorter hospital stay, and lower hospitalization cost than the surgical resection group(all P<0.001).In addition, the microwave ablation group had lower visual analogue scale score(P<0.001)than the surgical resection group. The incidences of complications such as incision infection(P=0.740),anastomotic fistula(P=1.000),and anastomotic stenosis(P=1.000),the overall survival period(P=0.191),and the disease-free survival period(P=0.934)showed no significant differences between the two groups. Conclusions For patients with colorectal cancer with simultaneous multiple liver metastases initially assessed as potentially resectable, laparoscopic primary resection+surgical resection/microwave ablation after conversion therapy was safe, effective, and had similar survival outcomes.Microwave ablation outperformed surgical resection in postoperative recovery, economy, and tolerability, being worthy of clinical promotion.

RESUMO

Schistosomiasis, a parasite infectious disease caused by Schistosoma japonicum, often leads to egg granuloma and fibrosis due to the inflammatory reaction triggered by egg antigens released in the host liver. This study focuses on the role of the egg antigens CP1412 protein of S. japonicum (SjCP1412) with RNase activity in promoting liver fibrosis. In this study, the recombinant egg ribonuclease SjCP1412, which had RNase activity, was successfully prepared. By analysing the serum of the population, it has been proven that the anti-SjCP1412 IgG in the serum of patients with advanced schistosomiasis was moderately correlated with liver fibrosis, and SjCP1412 may be an important antigen associated with liver fibrosis in schistosomiasis. In vitro, the rSjCP1412 protein induced the human liver cancer cell line Hep G2 and liver sinusoidal endothelial cells apoptosis and necrosis and the release of proinflammatory damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). In mice infected with schistosomes, rSjCP1412 immunization or antibody neutralization of SjCP1412 activity significantly reduced cell apoptosis and necroptosis in liver tissue, thereby reducing inflammation and liver fibrosis. In summary, the SjCP1412 protein plays a crucial role in promoting liver fibrosis during schistosomiasis through mediating the liver cells apoptosis and necroptosis to release DAMPs inducing an inflammatory reaction. Blocking SjCP1412 activity could inhibit its proapoptotic and necrotic effects and alleviate hepatic fibrosis. These findings suggest that SjCP1412 may be served as a promising drug target for managing liver fibrosis in schistosomiasis japonica.

RESUMO

Phosphorus (P) is a crucial macronutrient for plant growth, development, and reproduction. The effects of low P (LP) stress on leaf senescence and the role of PHR1 in LP-induced leaf senescence are still unknown. Here, we report that PHR1 plays a crucial role in LP-induced leaf senescence, showing delayed leaf senescence in phr1 mutant and accelerated leaf senescence in 35S:PHR1 transgenic Arabidopsis under LP stress. The transcriptional profiles indicate that 763 differentially expressed SAGs (DE-SAGs) were upregulated and 134 DE-SAGs were downregulated by LP stress. Of the 405 DE-SAGs regulated by PHR1, 27 DE-SAGs were involved in P metabolism and transport. PHR1 could bind to the promoters of six DE-SAGs (RNS1, PAP17, SAG113, NPC5, PLDζ2, and Pht1;5), and modulate them in LP-induced senescing leaves. The analysis of RNA content, phospholipase activity, acid phosphatase activity, total P and phosphate content also revealed that PHR1 promotes P liberation from senescing leaves and transport to young tissues under LP stress. Our results indicated that PHR1 is one of the crucial modulators for P recycling and redistribution under LP stress, and the drastic decline of P level is at least one of the causes of early senescence in P-deficient leaves.

RESUMO

Background: Chronic urticaria (CU) is a commonly seen skin disorder featured by recurring wheals, with or without angioedema, lasting for at least 6 weeks. Runzao Zhiyang capsule (RZC) has been widely applied to treat patients with CU. This study is aimed at systematically evaluating the efficacy and safety of RZC in treating CU. Materials and Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of RZC on treating CU from Chinese and English databases were searched. Data were collected by two independent researchers. The Cochrane Collaboration tool was adopted for evaluating the risk of bias. The meta-analysis was performed with Review Manager 5.3 software. Sensitivity analysis and publication bias assessment were conducted by Stata 14.0 software. Results: Totally 27 studies were included in the analysis, involving 2,703 patients. The pooled results showed that compared with second-generation H1-antihistamines (sgAHs) therapy alone, RZC combined with sgAHs is more effective in improving the total effective rate (RR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.25 to 1.39, p < 0.00001), the quality of life measured by Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) (MD = -2.63, 95% CI: -3.68 to -1.58, p < 0.00001) and the serum IFN-γ level (SMD = 3.10, 95% CI: 1.58 to 4.62, p < 0.0001), and reducing the recurrence rate (RR = 0.39, 95% CI: 0.27 to 0.55, p < 0.00001), the serum total IgE level (SMD = -2.44, 95% CI: -3.51 to -1.38, p < 0.00001), the serum IL-4 level (SMD = -2.96, 95% CI: -4.10 to -1.83, p < 0.00001), and the incidence of adverse events including dizziness, fatigue, dry mouth, and constipation (RR = 0.53, 95% CI: 0.33 to 0.85, p = 0.009; RR = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.26 to 0.84, p = 0.01; RR = 0.57, 95% CI: 0.34 to 0.95, p = 0.03; RR = 0.24, 95% CI: 0.07 to 0.85, p = 0.03). Conclusion: The current evidence indicates that RZC may be an efficient therapeutic regimen in patients with CU. Nevertheless, owing to the suboptimal quality of the included studies, more large-scale, well-designed RCTs are required to verify the obtained findings. RESUMO

A series of diclofenac hybrid molecules were synthesized and evaluated for their NO-inhibitory ability in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. Among them, compound 1 showed the highest NO-inhibitory ability (approximately 66%) and no significant cytotoxicity. Compound 1 exhibited superior NF-κB-inhibitory ability compared to diclofenac through the activation of Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway in RAW 264.7. 20 mg/kg compound 1 resulted in remarkable colitis improvement in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mice model by up-regulating HO-1 and down-regulating phosphorylation level of NF-κB p65. Moreover, 50 mg/kg dose of compound 1 showed a lower ulcerogenic potential compared to diclofenac in rats. The diclofenac-eugenol hybrid (compound 1) may serve as a novel anti-inflammatory agent based on its role in inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway and activating HO-1 expression with no toxicity in vitro and in vivo.

RESUMO

Currently, porcine coronaviruses are prevalent in pigs, and due to the outbreak of COVID-19, porcine coronaviruses have become a research hotspot. porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), Transmissible Gastroenteritis Virus (TGEV), and Porcine Deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) mentioned in this study mainly cause diarrhea in pigs. These viruses cause significant economic losses and pose a potential public health threat. In this study, specific primers and probes were designed according to the M gene of PEDV, the S gene of TGEV, and the M gene of PDCoV, respectively, and TaqMan probe-based multiplex real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was developed for the simultaneous detection of PEDV, TGEV, and PDCoV. This method has high sensitivity and specificity, and the detection limit of each virus can reach 2.95 × 100 copies/µl. An assay of 160 clinical samples from pigs with diarrhea showed that the positive rates of PEDV, TGEV, and PDCoV were 38.13, 1.88, and 5.00%; the coinfection rates of PEDV+TGEV, PEDV+PDCoV, TGEV+PDCoV, PEDV+TGEV+PDCoV were 1.25, 1.25, 0, 0.63%, respectively. The positive coincidence rates of the multiplex qRT-PCR and single-reaction qRT-PCR were 100%. This method is of great significance for clinical monitoring of the porcine enteric diarrhea virus and helps reduce the loss of the breeding industry and control the spread of the disease.

RESUMO

The members of PHOSPHATE 1 (PHO1) family play important roles in plant phosphate (Pi) transport and adaptation to Pi deficiency. The functions of PHO1 family proteins have been reported in several plant species, with the exception of Brassica species. Here, we identified 23, 23, and 44 putative PHO1 family genes in Brassica rapa, Brassica oleracea, and Brassica napus by whole genome analysis, respectively. The phylogenetic analysis divided PHO1 family proteins into eight groups, which represented the orthologous relationships among PHO1 members. The gene structure and the conserved motif analysis indicated that the most PHO1 family genes had similar gene structures and the PHO1 proteins shared mutual conserved motifs. The chromosome distribution analysis showed that the majority of BnPHO1 family genes distributed analogously at chromosomes with BrPHO1 and BoPHO1 family genes. The data showed that PHO1 family genes were highly conserved during evolution from diploid to tetraploid. Furthermore, the expression analysis showed that PHO1 family genes had different expression patterns in plant tissues, suggesting the diversity of gene functions in Brassica species. Meanwhile, the expression analysis also revealed that some PHO1 family genes were significantly responsive to Pi deficiency, suggesting that PHO1 family genes play critical roles in Pi uptake and homeostasis under low Pi stress. Altogether, the characteristics of PHO1 family genes provide a reliable groundwork for further dissecting their functions in Brassica species.

RESUMO

A Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, motile bacterium with multi-flagella, strain RST, was isolated from bacterial wilt of tobacco in Yuxi city of Yunnan province, China. The strain contains the major fatty acids of C16:0, summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c and/or C16:1 ω6c), and summed feature 8 (C18:1 ω7c and/or C18:1 ω6c). The polar lipid profile of strain RST consists of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, and unidentified aminophospholipid. Strain RST contains ubiquinones Q-7 and Q-8. 16S rRNA gene sequence (1,407 bp) analysis showed that strain RST is closely related to members of the genus Ralstonia and shares the highest sequence identities with R. pseudosolanacearum LMG 9673T (99.50%), R. syzygii subsp. indonesiensis LMG 27703T (99.50%), R. solanacearum LMG 2299T (99.28%), and R. syzygii subsp. celebesensis LMG 27706T (99.21%). The 16S rRNA gene sequence identities between strain RST and other members of the genus Ralstonia were below 98.00%. Genome sequencing yielded a genome size of 5.61 Mbp and a G + C content of 67.1 mol%. The genomic comparison showed average nucleotide identity (ANIb) values between strain RST and R. pseudosolanacearum LMG 9673T, R. solanacearum LMG 2299T, and R. syzygii subsp. indonesiensis UQRS 627T of 95.23, 89.43, and 91.41%, respectively, and the corresponding digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values (yielded by formula 2) were 66.20, 44.80, and 47.50%, respectively. In addition, strains belonging to R. solanacearum phylotype I shared both ANIb and dDDH with strain RST above the species cut-off values of 96 and 70%, respectively. The ANIb and dDDH values between the genome sequences from 12 strains of R. solanacearum phylotype III (Current R. pseudosolanacearum) and those of strain RST were below the species cut-off values. Based on these data, we concluded that strains of phylotype I, including RST, represent a novel species of the genus Ralstonia, for which the name Ralstonia nicotianae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Ralstonia nicotianae sp. nov. is RST (=GDMCC 1.3533T = JCM 35814T).

RESUMO

Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a devastating disease with extraordinarily poor treatment outcomes. Both pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) and ozone have good effects on the treatment of the disease. However, whether PRF and ozone have a synergistic effect on PHN remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the therapeutic effects of ozone alone and in combination with PRF in the treatment of PHN. Ninety-one patients with PHN were assigned into two groups: PRF combined with ozone (PRF + ozone group, n = 44) and ozone therapy alone (ozone group, n = 47). In PRF + ozone group, the high-voltage, long-duration PRF was applied to the target dorsal root ganglions. Then ozonated water (11.5 µg/mL) was injected through the inner cannula. In the ozone group, all other processes were the same as those in the PRF + ozone group apart from the electrical stimulation. The therapeutic efficacy was evaluated by visual analog scale and tactile sensation at pre-treatment and post-treatment 3, 6, and 12 months. Compared with pre-treatment data, the visual analog scale score was significantly decreased in both groups after treatment. Compared with the ozone group, the visual analog scale score was significantly decreased in the PRF + ozone group at 3, 6, and 12 months. Similarly, the tactile sensation was also significantly decreased at post-treatment when compared to pre-treatment. However, there were no statistical differences between the two groups. Regression analysis results showed that the history of diabetes mellitus and age had significant negative and positive effects, respectively, on the treatment results. To conclude, the administration of PRF + ozone and ozone therapy alone could both improve pain symptoms. Moreover, treatment effects and total efficacy rates tended to be higher for the combination of PRF and ozone than ozone alone. This conclusion was especially true for long-term therapeutic effects.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acute thoracic aortic dissection (ATAD) is a fatal condition characterized by tear of intima, formation of false lumen and rupture of aorta. However, the subpopulations of normal and dissected aorta remain less studied. METHODS: Single-cell RNA sequencing was performed including 5 patients with ATAD and 4 healthy controls. Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence were used to verify the findings. RESULTS: We got 8 cell types from human ascending aorta and identified 50 subpopulations including vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), endothelial cells, fibroblasts, neutrophils, monocytes and macrophages. Six transmembrane epithelial antigen of prostate 4 metalloreductase (STEAP4) was identified as a new marker of synthetic VSMCs. CytoTRACE identified subpopulations with higher differentiation potential in specified cell types including synthetic VSMCs, enolase 1+ fibroblasts and myeloid-derived neutrophils. Synthetic VSMCs-derived C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 12 (CXCL12) might interact with neutrophils and fibroblasts via C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) and atypical chemokine receptor 3 (ACKR3), respectively, which might recruit neutrophils and induce transdifferentitation of fibroblasts into synthetic VSMCs. CONCLUSION: We characterized signatures of different cell types in normal and dissected human ascending aorta and identified a new marker for isolation of synthetic VSMCs. Moreover, we proposed a potential mechanism that synthetic VSMCs might interact with neutrophils and fibroblasts via CXCL12-CXCR4/ACKR3 axis whereby deteriorating the progression of ATAD, which might provide new insights to better understand the development and progression of ATAD.

RESUMO

Objective: To explore the effect of applying continuous nursing care based on hierarchical diagnosis and treatment in Stage II cardiac rehabilitation of patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and provide a theoretical basis for clinical nursing intervention. Methods: Patients in PCI postoperative II cardiac rehabilitation were selected and randomly divided into the experimental group (community group), the experimental group (rehabilitation group), and the control group. Patients in the control group received the routine cardiac rehabilitation management scheme, while those in the experimental groups received continuous nursing protocol based on the hierarchical diagnosis and treatment mode. All patients were compared for the cardiac rehabilitation evaluation indexes at discharge and 6 months after discharge. Results: Compared with the control group, the left ventricular ejection fraction, 6-minute walking distance test, medication compliance, and quality of life were all improved in the two experimental groups, and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The improvement in the rehabilitation group was more significant than in the community group. There were more patients with high cardiac rehabilitation compliance in the rehabilitation group than in the community group, with the difference being statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Continuous nursing care rehabilitation based on the hierarchical diagnosis and treatment mode can improve the cardiac function of patients after PCI, enhance their quality of life, and improve their rehabilitation and medication compliance, facilitating their cardiac rehabilitation.

RESUMO

Obesity and related metabolic disorders are worldwide epidemics. Current lifestyle interventions and drug treatment for obesity seem insufficient. Here, we show that Loureirin B (LB), a major flavonoid molecule extracted from Sanguis Draxonis, prevents diet-induced obesity and ameliorates concomitant metabolic abnormalities including fatty liver, insulin resistance and systemic inflammation in mice. Mechanistically, LB treatment increases the proportion of ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in brown adipose tissue (BAT) and white adipose tissue (WAT), which subsequently activates the key lipid sensor GPR120. In line with this, LB treatment promotes browning of WAT and activates BAT thermogenesis through upregulation of UCP1, a downstream effector of GPR120. Conversely, inhibition of GPR120 abolishes the thermogenic effect of LB in primary cultured brown adipocytes. Together, these results suggest that LB possesses anti-obesity property by enhancing adipose tissue thermogenesis via activation of ω3 PUFA-GPR120-UCP1 axis and holds promises for combating obesity and its related metabolic syndrome.

RESUMO

Fermi arcs on Weyl semimetals exhibit many exotic quantum phenomena. Usually found on atomically flat surfaces with approximate translation symmetry, Fermi arcs are rooted in the peculiar topology of bulk Bloch bands of 3D crystals. The fundamental question of whether a 1D Fermi arc can be probed remains unanswered. Such an answer could significantly broaden potential applications of Weyl semimetals. Here, we report a direct observation of robust edge states on atomic-scale ledges in TaAs using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. Spectroscopic signatures and theoretical calculations reveal that the 1D Fermi arcs arise from the chiral Weyl points of bulk crystals. The crossover from 2D Fermi arcs to eventual complete localization on 1D edges was arrested experimentally on a sequence of surfaces. Our results demonstrate extreme robustness of the bulk-boundary correspondence, which offers topological protection for Fermi arcs, even in cases in which the boundaries are at the atomic-scale. The persistent 1D Fermi arcs can be profitably exploited in miniaturized quantum devices.

RESUMO

Objectives: Sleep deprivation is a common health problem in modern society and is negatively associated with deleterious effects on cognitive functions such as learning and memory ability. This study was undertaken to provide a detailed account of the effect of chronic ozone intraperitoneal injection on the deleterious effects of sleep deprivation on brain function in rats. Materials and Methods: Sleep deprivation was induced using the modified multiple platform model. The rats received REM sleep deprivation with an intraperitoneal injection of ozone or midazolam for 28 days. The effects of ozone on REM sleep deprivation-induced hippocampus-dependent learning and memory deficits were studied by the following approaches: Morris water maze (MWM) tests were used to evaluate spatial learning and memory of rats. Morphological changes in the brain were evaluated using hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining. RNA-sequence was performed to seek a common mechanism. The expression of the targeted gene was examined by qPCR and Western blotting. Results: Ozone intraperitoneal injection reversed spatial learning and memory deficits associated with REM sleep deprivation, ameliorating pathological brain damage and down-regulating the hippocampal expression of Sema3A in rats after REM sleep deprivation. Conclusion: Ozone intraperitoneal injection alleviated sleep deprivation-induced spatial learning and memory deficits by protecting hippocampal neurons via down-regulation of the expression of Sema3A in the hippocampus.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Thalamic pain (TP), also known as central post-stroke pain, is a chronic neuropathic pain syndrome that follows a stroke and is a severe pain that is usually intractable. No universally applicable and effective therapies have been proposed. Emerging studies have reported that electroacupuncture (EA) can potentially be used as an effective therapy for the treatment of neuropathic pain. However, whether EA influences TP and if so, by what potential mechanism, remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to detect the efficacy of EA and explore possible mechanisms for treating TP. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled animal study. SETTING: The laboratory at the Aviation General Hospital of China Medical University and Beijing Institute of Translational Medicine. METHODS: Male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 15 / group): sham-operated (SH) group, thalamic pain model (TP) group, EA treatment (EA) group. After the TP rat model was successfully established, EA was used for intervention. During the experiment, the mechanical pain thresholds of rats were detected among the groups. The right thalamus of the rats was extracted on postoperative day 28 for RNA-sequencing (RNA-Seq) analysis to find the changes in gene expression in different groups of rats. The key genes were screened using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) detection and subsequently identified with western blotting and immunofluorescence. RESULTS: The mechanical withdrawal threshold (MWT) value of the right facial skin in the TP group and the EA group decreased significantly on the 3rd day after surgery, compared to the SH group (P < 0.01). From 7 to 28 days, the MWT value increased continually in the EA group; however, there was no significant change in the TP group. The results of RNA-seq showed that compared to the TP group, 377 genes changed in the EA group. Moreover, ADCY1 expression increased significantly in the TP group as compared to the SH group, while EA treatment reversed the expression of ADCY1. LIMITATIONS: In addition to ADCY1, the mechanism(s) of other signaling pathways in TP need to be explored in future research. CONCLUSIONS: EA treatment may promote the recovery of TP model rat by regulating ADCY1 expression.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There appears to be a paucity of knowledge about the biomechanics of locking plates for the fixation of metacarpal shaft fractures. A thorough understanding of the biomechanics of locking plates is needed to apply them correctly, optimize outcomes, and avoid complications. The purpose of this study is to investigate the biomechanics of the fixation of metacarpal fractures using locking plate-screw constructs with different numbers of screws. HYPOTHESIS: The difference in the number of screws in the locking plate influenced the biomechanical outcome of the metacarpal fracture. METHODS: Finite element models of third metacarpal fractures with locking plate-screw constructs were established, and the magnitude and distribution of their stresses and displacements were investigated when a vertical load of 100N was applied. RESULTS: For the metacarpal fracture with a locking plate and screws, the stress in the metacarpal was largely shared by the plate-screw construct. For the plate-screw construct, the stress is concentrated in the area close to the fracture line, and the 6-screw Group has the lowest failure risk since it has the lowest plate stress and the second-lowest screw stress. The implant-bone construct with 8 screws has better biomechanical stability because of minimal displacement, but increased stress on both the metacarpal bone and the screws, leading to increased failure rates. DISCUSSION: The stresses in the metacarpal were mostly shared by the plate-screw constructs and the screws closest to the fracture line were the most likely to break or loosen. For the implant-bone constructs, the locking plate with 2 screws was the most vulnerable to break or loosen, whereas the locking plate with 6 screws was the least likely to break or loosen. The implant-bone construct with 8 screws had better biomechanical stability, but the stresses in both the metacarpal and the screws were increased, which increased the risk of failure. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: IV, basic science study.

RESUMO

Fast quantitative determination of active aluminum (Ala) in natural and treated water is extremely desirable. The fluorescence method based on complexation by 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) is highly promising, but the measurement could be severely interfered by hardness ions and natural organic matter (NOM). This study was devoted to refining the 8-HQ complexation-fluorescence method for measurement of Ala by eliminating the interferences. Results showed that magnesium ions at a typical concentration in natural water could have a substantial positive interference, due to the formation of Mg-8-HQ complexes which have fluorescence regions similar to Al-8-HQ. NOM, represented by fulvic acid (FA), could not interfere the aluminum measurement considerably. It was primarily because 8-HQ has much stronger complexing ability than NOM with aluminum. Theoretical calculations showed that reducing the buffering pH (from 7.5) to 6.5 or using a masking ligand such as edetate (EDTA) could effectively alleviate the interference mainly caused by magnesium. Experimental results confirmed the theoretical predictions. Refined procedures were suggested for more accurate while fast determination of Ala in natural or treated water. The refined method has a quantification limit of ~4 µg/L, a linear range of measurement up to 700 µg/L, and a relative standard deviation of ~0.8%.
