Background: There has been an increase in research on the potential adverse effects on children's mental health, especially depression and anxiety, during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic over the past few months. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate depression and anxiety symptoms among children in shelter hospitals during the 2022 Shanghai lockdown. Methods: A total of 98 infected children aged 7-12 years were enrolled in this study between April 19 and June 4, 2022. The Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), Anxiety Scale for Children-Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASC-ASD), and Anxiety Scale or Children-Autism Spectrum Disorder Parent Form (ASC-ADS-P) were used to assess children's depression and anxiety symptoms. Children's guardians completed the survey by verbally asking their child/children the questions. The guardians additionally completed the ASC-ASD-P. Results: The prevalence of depression and anxiety was 12.2% and 13.3%, respectively. A total of 66 respondents reported no physical symptoms. Linear regression showed that myalgia [7.198, 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.163-11.232], headache (7.189, 95% CI: 3.842-10.535) coryza (5.362, 95% CI: 2.654-8.070), and number of quarantine days (4.378, 95% CI: 3.409-5.348) were significantly correlated with higher levels of depression, whereas chills (14.337, 95% CI: 9.799-18.875), coryza (9.309, 95% CI: 6.467-12.152), headache (7.193, 95% CI: 3.182-11.204), myalgia (5.571, 95% CI: 0.684-10.459), number of quarantine days (3.190, 95% CI: 1.796-4.584), and gender (male) (-4.137, 95% CI: -6.609 to 1.665) were associated with anxiety scores. Persistent fever was correlated with depression (P=0.007), whereas physical discomfort, such as persistent fever, cough, sore throat, headache, myalgia, and coryza were correlated with anxiety (all P<0.05). Conclusions: The findings of the present study indicated a moderate prevalence of depression and anxiety among infected children in a shelter hospital during the 2022 Shanghai lockdown. Therefore, the findings of this study could provide scientific basis for the development of targeted psychological intervention. It could be helpful for policy-makers to focus on psychological health among infected children and help to optimize future interventions.

BACKGROUND: Although the use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) has been reported in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), there is currently no consensus on the occurrence or characteristics of the hemorrhage risk in different antithrombotic regimens. METHODS: Disproportionality and Bayesian analyses were performed in mining data of suspected hemorrhagic events after antithrombotic drug use from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) from January 2004 to September 2019. The time to onset and fatality rate of hemorrhage following different antithrombotic regimens were also compared. RESULTS: A total of 84,998 reports of hemorrhage-related adverse events with the use of antithrombotic drugs were identified. The patients included were mostly from the Americas (80.87%) and Europe (13.22%), with most data submitted by nonhealthcare professionals. Among the seven antithrombotic drug monotherapies, betrixaban had the highest association with hemorrhage based on the highest reporting odds ratio (ROR, 829.95; 95% CI = 113.61-6063.15), proportional reporting ratio (PRR, 24.68, χ2 = 804.24), and multi-item gamma Poisson shrinker (MGPS, 24.68, 95% one-sided CI = 4.67). The combination therapies of clopidogrel plus new oral anticoagulants had higher RORs, PRRs, and empirical Bayesian geometric means (EBGMs) than the antithrombotic drug monotherapies. Hemorrhage associated with rivaroxaban plus clopidogrel appeared to have an earlier onset (171 days vs 219 days, 95% two-sided CI =68.68-27.34, p < 0.0001) and a lower fatality rate (15.30% vs 17.74%, p<0.05) than that associated with rivaroxaban monotherapy. CONCLUSION: This study provides a relevant overview of the hemorrhagic complications/fatalities associated with different antithrombotic regimens in their real-world use. Among the combination therapies, clopidogrel plus DOACs were found to have stronger associations with hemorrhage than traditional dual antithrombotic therapies. Rivaroxaban showed a stronger association with hemorrhage than other antithrombotic drug monotherapies, and apixaban monotherapy appeared to have weaker associations with hemorrhage than others.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), two typical persistent organic pollutants, are the research focus due to their mutagenesis, carcinogenesis, teratogenesis, and bioaccumulation. The content distribution and residual characteristics of PAHs and PCBs were investigated in the sediments from the Sanya River. Source apportionment was further explored based on the analysis of the spatial distribution, and the ecological risk evaluation was carried out with the sediment quality criteria and standards. The results indicate that the content of ΣPAHs and ΣPCBs in the sediment range from 265.00 µg·kg-1 to 6735.00 µg·kg-1 and 1.75 µg·kg-1 to 92.75 µg·kg-1, with relatively high contents in the east and west river upstream, respectively, which had a strong correlation with the industrial structure and river movement of the study area. The composition and source apportionment demonstrate that PAHs originated mostly from the combustion of petroleum with low PAHs, and haxa-CB and hepta-CB are the predominant PCBs congeners, primarily resulting from the migration of PCBs in the capacitor. The ecological risk evaluation demonstrates that the biotoxic effect of the PAHs is not obvious, with a low ecological risk. However, several PAHs monomers exceeded the standard significantly in some sampling sites, which should be of concern due to its serious threat of exposure to organisms. The probability of a biotoxic effect of PCBs is 10%-50%, which occasionally produces a negative ecological effect.

Background: Stapedotomy has been proved to be one of the most efficient procedure to treat otosclerosis, various factors contribute to the diversity of the outcomes and controversial results exist from previous studies. Objectives: We evaluated clinical characteristics and outcomes of stapedotomy, as well as possible predictive factors of a successful outcome. Materials and methods: This retrospective study evaluated 58 ears from 48 patients with demographic data, plus short-term follow-up of hearing outcomes of 28 ears, and evaluated variables using univariate general linear regression analyses. Results: The average operation age was 41.54 years. A total of 87.5% (42/48) patients presented with bilateral otosclerosis. 39.66% (23/58) ears had CT finding before the surgery. Patients with persistent tinnitus accounted for 53.45% (31/58) and the average preoperative ABG of the 58 ears was 32.22 dB. We achieved good postoperative air-bone gaps (ABGs) overall but poor ABG closure at 4 kHz. No predictive factors were identified in the 28 ears that were followed up. Conclusions and significance: Delayed surgery may be attributable to insufficient recognition of otosclerosis. The fenestration size could be the reason for poor ABG closure at high frequency. However, more cases and longer follow-ups are required to confirm our findings.

AIM: To test the therapeutic effects of delayed treatment of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in recurrent experimental autoimmune uveitis (rEAU). METHODS: The efficacy of different regimens of MSC administration in rEAU were tested by evaluation of clinical and pathological intraocular inflammation, as well as retinal structural and functional integrity using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and electroretinogram (ERG). The retinal sections were also immunostained with antibodies to glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and rhodopsin (RHO). RESULTS: Delayed treatment of MSCs effectively alleviated the severity of intraocular inflammation with relative intact of outer retinal structure and function. Moreover, double therapies with longer interval led to an even better clinical evaluation, as well as a trend of decrease in relapse and amelioration of retinal function. MSC therapies also effectively reduced GFAP expression and increased RHO expression in the retina. CONCLUSION: MSC administration can effectively treat developed diseases of rEAU, and multiple therapies can provide additional therapeutic benefits.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the cardiac structural and functional changes in high altitude heart disease (HAHD) patients with various grade of pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH). METHODS: Pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) was evaluated by Doppler echocardiography in 100 patients with HAHD and patients were divided into 3 groups: mild (PASP: 30-49 mm Hg), moderate (PASP: 50-69 mm Hg) and severe (PASP ≥ 70 mm Hg) PAH and 50 patients without organic heart disease served as control group. Data on heart structure and function, heart rhythm and whole blood NT-proBNP were compared among groups. RESULTS: Right ventricular free wall was significantly thicker in moderate and severe PAH groups than in the control group [(5.10 ± 2.23) mm, (7.00 ± 2.29 ) mm vs.(3.70 ± 0.92)mm, P < 0.05], and in the severe PAH group than in mild and moderate PAH groups [ (7.00 ± 2.29) mm vs.(4.58 ± 1.80) mm, (5.10 ± 2.23) mm, all P < 0.05] and which was similar between the mild PAH group and the control group. Right ventricular inter diameter and right ventricular outflow tract inter diameter were significantly increased in all HAHD groups compared to the control group (all P < 0.01), and were also significantly increased in moderate and severe PAH groups than in the mild PAH group (P < 0.01). Thickness of interventricular septum was also significantly increased in HAHD patients than control group and in moderate and severe PAH groups than in moderate PAH group. Left atrium anterior-posterior diameter was significantly increased in HAHD patients than in control group and was similar among HAHD patients with various degree of PAH. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was remarkably decreased in all HAHD groups than in the control group (P < 0.05) , moreover, LVEF was remarkably decreased in the moderate PAH group than in the mild PAH group (P < 0.05) . EF was similar between severe PAH group and moderate PAH group (P > 0.05) . There was no significant correlation between lgPASP and EF (R = -0.103, P = 0.298) . Compared with the control group, the incidences of decompensated heart failure and arrhythmia were remarkably increased in HAHD patients (P < 0.05) . The level of whole blood NT-proBNP increased in proportion to increasing PASP in HAHD patients (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Increased PASP correlates with whole blood NT-proBNP and is an important determinant affecting the right ventricular structure and left and right ventricular function in HAHD patients.

BACKGROUND: Studies discovered that the hippocampal subfields are differentially affected by pathological damage, and magnetic resonance (MR) diffusion tensor imaging parameters might be more sensitive measures of early degeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD) than conventional MR imaging techniques. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the significance of the volume of hippocampal subfields and the mean diffusivity (MD) value of hippocampus in discrimination between mild AD and normal aging. METHODS: A total of 29 patients with mild AD and 30 normal aging were scanned. Binary logistic regression analysis was applied to assess the diagnostic significance of the volumes of hippocampal subfields and the MD value of hippocampus. RESULTS: All hippocampal subfields except right tail atrophied significantly in the mild AD group (P < .05). The relative volumes of right CA1 and subiculum subfields entered the binary logistic regression model. The accuracy was 91.8%, which was improved to 93.9% as the MD value of right hippocampus entered the model. CONCLUSION: Atrophy was present in almost all hippocampal subfields at mild AD stage. The volumes of CA1 and subiculum were of the most diagnostic significance in discrimination of mild AD, which can be improved by the combination of volume and diffusivity analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have revealed that amyloid depositions exist in not only the hippocampus but in other subcortical gray matter structures as well. Diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) parameters might be more sensitive measures of early degeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD) than conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques. PURPOSE: To evaluate the significance of the volumes and the mean diffusivity (MD) values of subcortical gray matter structures in discrimination between early-stage AD and normal subjects using the Integrated Registration and Segmentation Tool in FMRIB's Software Library. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-three cases of early-stage AD and 30 normal aging volunteers from two hospitals were scanned with 3D-FSPGRIR and SSSE-EPI sequences using two similar 1.5T MR systems. The mean relative volumes and mean MD values of subcortical gray matter structures were compared between early-stage AD and control groups. Binary logistic regression analysis and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves were applied to assess the diagnostic significance of every structure's relative volume, MD value, and combination of both. RESULTS: The relative volumes of the left hippocampus, right amygdala, bilateral thalamus, right caudate, left putamen, and bilateral pallidum were significantly lower in the early-stage AD group than in the control group (P < 0.05). The MD values of the bilateral hippocampus and pallidum, and of the right thalamus and caudate were significantly elevated in the early-stage AD group (P < 0.05). In binary logistic regression analysis, the relative volume of left hippocampus and age entered the final model of volumetric analysis. The MD values of bilateral hippocampi and pallidums entered the final model of MD analysis. The MD values of bilateral hippocampi and pallidums, and the relative volume of left pallidum, entered the final model of combination analysis. The accuracy of three models was 84.7%, 88.9%, and 93.1%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Pathological changes takes place in the hippocampus and other subcortical gray matter structures in early-stage AD. Diffusive imaging has great diagnostic significance in early-stage AD. The combination of both imaging modalities can lead to better discrimination between early-stage AD and normal aging.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between the hydroxy free radical (* OH) and the activity of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and to study the potential role of activin-A in myocardial ischemia postconditioning for the protection of myocardium. METHODS: Forty healthy adult Sprague-Dawley rats (gender unconcerned) were randomly divided into four different groups (n = 10 in each group): sham-operation, ischemia (I), ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) and ischemia postconditioning (postcon). In anesthetized open-chest rats, the left anterior descending artery (LAD) was ligated. Sham operation: the surgical procedure was identical to other groups, but the LAD was ligated for only 30 min, and not occluded. Ischemia: the LAD was occluded for 30 min; Ischemia/reperfusion: the LAD was occluded for 30 min and reperfused for 1 h; Postconditioning: after LAD occlusion for 30 min, at the start of reperfusion, three cycles of 30 s reperfusion and 30 s LAD re-occlusion preceded the 1h of reperfusion. The expression of activin-A in myocardium was detected by ELISA in all groups. The ability of suppression on the hydroxy free radical (* OH) and the activity of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in myocardium taken from each group were measured by spectrophotometer. RESULTS: Compared with the sham-operated group, the expression of activin-A was significantly elevated in ischemia, ischemia/reperfusion and postconditiong groups, with the highest in the ischemia/reperfusion group. And postconditioning significantly decreased the expression of activin-A in the ischemia/ reperfusion injured myocardium [(343.05 +/- 25.8) microg/mg protein vs (470.6 +/- 33.1) microg/mg protein, P < 0.05]. The expression of activin-A was negatively correlated with the ability of suppression on the hydroxy free radical and LDH separately. CONCLUSION: The result indicated that activin-A was involved in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury, and down-regulation of activin-A might be one of the cardioprotective mechanisms of postconditioning.
