Objective: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide, with patients frequently experiencing significant psychological distress, particularly anxiety. Despite the high prevalence of anxiety in patients with cancer, there is limited comprehensive research focusing on the specific factors influencing anxiety in patients with early- and middle-stage lung cancer within the context of Chinese medicine hospitals. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the epidemiology and factors influencing anxiety disorders in patients with early- and middle-stage primary bronchial lung cancer through a cross-sectional study. Methods: A total of 340 patients with early and middle-stage lung cancer admitted to the outpatient ward of the oncology department at Guang'anmen Hospital from June 2023 to December 2023 were included in this study. Survey data, including the patients' general condition questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Scale (GAD-7), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Mental Toughness Scale (CD-RISC-10), were collected and recorded in a database using a two-person input format. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 27.0 software. Results: Out of the 340 patients with early- and middle-stage lung cancer included in this study, 133 had anxiety, resulting in an overall anxiety detection rate of 39.12%. The chi-square test showed that statistically significant differences in religion, marital status, surgical treatment, tobacco use, and alcohol history between the anxious and non-anxious groups (p < 0.05). Moreover, statistically significant differences were observed in per capita annual family income, pathological type, VAS score, targeted therapy, treatment stage, and mental toughness level (p < 0.001). Other factors were not significantly correlated with anxiety onset. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that higher per capita family income and completed treatment independently acted as protective factors against anxiety onset in patients with early- and middle-stage lung cancer. Conversely, rare pathological types, increased pain severity, and lower levels of mental toughness were identified as independent risk factors for anxiety onset in these patients. Conclusion: Anxiety was prevalent in patients with early- and middle-stage lung cancers. Rare pathological types, increased pain severity, and lower levels of mental toughness were independent risk factors for anxiety. Therefore, clinicians and psychologists should pay more attention to patients with rare types of tumors, actively manage their pain symptoms, and consider implementing mental resilience training to improve patients' mental toughness.

BACKGROUNDS: KLKs have been proved to be key regulators of the tumor microenvironment. In this study, we explored the potential of Kallikrein-related peptidases (KLKs) as clinical diagnostic and prognostic markers in patients with kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) as well as their relationship with common immuno-inhibitor and immune cell infiltration in the tumor microenvironment to provide new targets and novel ideas for KIRC therapy. METHODS: Oncomine, Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA), UCSC Xena, Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx), Kaplan-Meier plotter, cBioPortal, STRING, GeneMANIA, and TISIDB were used to analyze the differential expression, prognostic value, gene changes, molecular interaction, and immune infiltration of KLKs in patients with KIRC. RESULTS: From the gene expression level, it can be determined that KLK1, KLK6, and KLK7 are differentially expressed in KIRC and normal tissues. From the perspective of clinical prognosis, KLK1, KLK13, and KLK14 are highly correlated with the clinical prognosis of KIRC. The expression of KLKs is regulated by various immunosuppressive agents, with KDR, PVRL2, and VTCN1 being the most significant. The expression of KLKs is significantly correlated with the infiltration of various immune cells, of which Eosinophils and Neutrophils are the most significant. CONCLUSIONS: KLK1, KLK6, KLK7, KLK13, and KLK14 have potential as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers, among which KLK1 is the most significant. This study may provide detailed immune information and promising targets for KIRC immunotherapy to assist in designing new immunotherapies.

RESUMO

Although the relationship between psychological factors and pancreatic cancer outcomes has been widely discussed, controversy remains. We will for the first time systematically summarize the literature to explore the correlation of anxiety and depression to the prognosis of patients with pancreatic cancer. The findings will fill existing research gaps, informing healthcare providers about better psychological care and medical treatment. The following databases will be retrieved from their inception to July 2023: Cochrane Library, MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, EMBASE, and four Chinese databases (Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Database, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and Chongqing VIP Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database). The World Health Organization Clinical Trials Registry, Chinese Clinical Registry, and ClinicalTrials.gov will be searched to identify other related studies. A manual search will be performed to identify missing eligible studies based on the reference list of selected articles. The search will focus on studies published in Chinese or English. To assess the risk of bias in the selected articles, Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale (NOS) will be used for the cohort study. Funnel plots and Egger's test will be used to assess whether publication bias exists. Moreover, the Grading of Recommendations Assessment Development and Evaluation (GRADE) will be utilized to analyze the credibility of the results from selected articles. Two independent evaluators will implement the study selection and data extraction, as well as evaluate the risk of bias and evidence quality. Data will be analyzed using Stata 16.0. Trial registration: PROSPERO registration number is CRD42022366232.

Objective: The aim of the study is to explore the relationship between lymphatic metastasis genes, prognosis, and immune cell infiltration in patients with colon cancer. Methods: Based on the Cancer Genome Atlas Program (TCGA) database, differentially expressed genes and prognostic genes related to colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) lymphatic metastasis were screened and intersected. We used lasso and univariate Cox regression analysis to screen core genes and establish a preliminary prediction model. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis was used for lymphatic metastasis-related genes, and single GSEA was used for the final screening results. Finally, we evaluated the relationship between identified genes and immune cell infiltration. Results: A total of 1727 genes were differentially expressed between COAD patients with TNM stages of N0 and N1. After further screening, six core genes (RNU4-2, ZNF556, RNVU1-15, NSA2P6, RN7SL767P, and RN7SL473P) were obtained, and a preliminary prediction model was established, in which ZNF556 was a risk factor, and the rest were protective factors. Single GSEA showed that pathways such as systemic lupus erythematosus might play an important role in the initial lymphatic metastasis of COAD. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis of 1727 genes supported this result. Immune infiltration analysis showed that six genes were significantly correlated with T cell and NK cell families. Conclusion: Six core genes may affect COAD initial lymphatic metastasis through the systemic lupus erythematosus pathway and immune cell infiltration.

Pancreatic cancer is a highly malignant tumor with poor prognosis. Currently available Western medical management strategies are unable to prolong the survival time and reduce the mortality of patients with pancreatic cancer. Traditional Chinese medicine has achieved promising results in many clinical studies. This systematic review and meta-analysis (SR/MA) aimed to explore the benefits and evaluate the quality of evidence of traditional Chinese medicine-based interventions for preventing and treating pancreatic cancer. A systematic search of eight databases for SRs/MAs of randomized controlled trials on traditional Chinese medicine treatment for pancreatic cancer was conducted (from inception to April 2022). The methodological quality of the SRs/MAs was assessed using AMSTAR 2.0, and the quality of evidence was evaluated using the GRADE guide. Nine SRs/MAs, including 145 randomized controlled trials, were considered eligible for this study. The literature were published between 2014 and 2022. The sample size of randomized controlled trials in the MAs ranged from 336 to 1,989. The methodological quality of the nine studies was critically low. Among the 59 outcome indicators of the nine SRs/MAs, seven, 33, and 19 had moderate-, low-, and critically low-quality evidence, respectively, while high-quality evidence was not identified. The results for the long-term indicators, short-term indicators, and adverse reactions in the SRs/MAs displayed consistencies and differences. In conclusion, the methodological and evidence quality of the current evidence is generally low, highlighting the need for additional focus on implementation processes. Some evidence with moderate quality validated that several specific traditional Chinese medicine were optimum for improving the short-term clinical efficacy. However, more objective and high-quality investigations are warranted to verify the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine for pancreatic cancer.

Objective: We aimed to analyze the possible molecular mechanism of Xihuang pill (XHP) in the treatment of pancreatic cancer based on methods of network pharmacology, molecular docking, and bioinformatics. Methods: The main active components and targets were obtained through the TCMSP database, the BATMAN-TCM database, and the Chemistry database. The active ingredients were screened according to the "Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion" (ADME) principle and supplemented with literature. We searched GeneCards, OMIM, TTD, and DrugBank databases for pancreatic cancer targets. The targets of disease and ingredients were intersected to obtain candidate key targets. Then, we constructed a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network for protein interaction analysis and a composition-key target map to obtain essential effective ingredients. Metascape was used to perform functional enrichment analysis to screen critical targets and pathways. The expression and prognosis of key targets were examined and analyzed, and molecular docking was carried out. Results: A total of 52 active ingredients of XHP, 121 candidate targets, and 52 intersecting targets were obtained. The core active ingredients of XHP for the treatment of pancreatic cancer were quercetin, 17-ß-estradiol, ursolic acid, and daidzein. The core targets were EGFR, ESR1, MAPK1, MAPK8, MAPK14, TP53, and JUN, which were highly expressed genes of pancreatic cancer. Among them, EGFR and MAPK1 were significantly correlated with the survival of pancreatic cancer patients. The key pathway was the EGFR/MAPK pathway. The molecular docking results indicated that four active compositions had good binding ability to key targets. Conclusion: The molecular mechanism of XHP for the treatment of pancreatic cancer involved multiple components, multiple targets, and multiple pathways. This research theoretically elucidated the ameliorative effect of XHP against pancreatic cancer and might provide new ideas for further research on the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

Taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.), Schott), from the Araceae family, is one of the oldest crops with important edible, medicinal, nutritional and economic value. Taro is a highly polymorphic species including diverse genotypes adapted to a broad range of environments, but the taro genome has rarely been investigated. Here, a high-quality chromosome-level genome of C. esculenta was assembled using data sequenced by Illumina, PacBio and Nanopore platforms. The assembled genome size was 2,405 Mb with a contig N50 of 400.0 kb and a scaffold N50 of 159.4 Mb. In total, 2,311 Mb (96.09%) of the contig sequences was anchored onto 14 chromosomes to form pseudomolecules, and 2,126 Mb (88.43%) was annotated as repetitive sequences. Of the 28,695 predicted protein-coding genes, 26,215 genes (91.4%) could be functionally annotated. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis using 769 genes, C. esculenta and Spirodela polyrhiza were placed on one branch of the tree that diverged approximately 73.23 million years ago. The synteny analyses showed that there have been two whole-genome duplication events in C. esculenta separated by a relatively short gap. According to comparative genome analysis, a larger number (1,189) of distinct gene families and long terminal repeats were enriched in C. esculenta. Our high-quality taro genome will provide valuable resources for further genetic, ecological and evolutionary analyses of taro or other species in the Araceae.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of Chinese medicine (CM) treatment on survival time and quality of life (QOL) in patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). METHODS: This was an exploratory and prospective clinical observation. Patients diagnosed with SCLC receiving CM treatment were included and followed up every 3 months. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS), and the secondary outcomes were progression-free survival (PFS) and QOL. RESULTS: A total of 136 patients including 65 limited-stage SCLC (LS-SCLC) patients and 71 extensive-stage SCLC (ES-SCLC) patients were analyzed. The median OS of ES-SCLC patients was 17.27 months, and the median OS of LS-SCLC was 40.07 months. The survival time was 16.27 months for SCLC patients with brain metastasis, 9.83 months for liver metastasis, 13.43 months for bone metastasis, and 18.13 months for lung metastasis. Advanced age, pleural fluid, liver and brain metastasis were risk factors, while longer CM treatment duration was a protective factor. QOL assessment indicated that after 6 months of CM treatment, scores increased in function domains and decreased in symptom domains. CONCLUSION: CM treatment might help prolong OS of SCLC patients. Moreover, CM treatment brought the trend of symptom amelioration and QOL improvement. These results provide preliminary evidence for applying CM in SCLC multi-disciplinary treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with lung cancer often experience heavy psychological distress, especially depression, which results in poorer quality of life, shorter survival time and greater mortality. Our aim is to summarise data on the prevalence and risk factors of depression in patients with lung cancer. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will search PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang and Chinese Biomedicine Literature Database (SinoMed) for studies on the prevalence and risk factors of depression in patients with lung cancer, which should be published from 1 January 1975 to 25 November 2018 in English/Chinese. Two reviewers will independently screen studies, extract data and assess the risk of bias. We will use RevMan V.5.0 and STATA V.12.0 software for statistical analysis. The I² test will be used to identify the extent of heterogeneity. Publication bias will be assessed by generating a funnel plot and performing the Begg and Egger test. The quality of the systematic review will be evaluated using the AMSTAR ('A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews') criteria and 'The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation'. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Since this is a review involving analysis of publicly available data, ethical approval is not required. The final results of this study will be published in a peer-reviewed journal. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: CRD42018118167.

Background: Lung cancer is very common in China. The low cure rate, limited overall survival, and continuous therapies lead the patients to experience considerable psychological distress. Traditional Chinese medicine therapy is one unique treatment method in China. Nevertheless, most patients in the existing studies on anxiety and depression were treated in western medical hospitals. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the prevalence and risk factors of these emotional disorders in lung cancer patients treated in traditional Chinese medical hospitals. These findings may assist in clinical intervention. Patients and methods: A total of 315 patients with lung cancer were enrolled. Individuals completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale to assess their levels of anxiety and depression. Demographic and clinical data were also collected. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors that significantly predicted anxiety and depression. Results: The anxiety and depression prevalence rates of lung cancer patients were 43.5% and 57.1%, respectively. In the univariate analysis, patients without surgery, who were young, or who received radiotherapy were more likely to experience anxiety. Patients without surgery, who were young, or who had late-stage cancer, were more likely to experience depression. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that the risk factors of both anxiety and depression were lack of surgery and young and middle age (<65, especially 45-65 years). Conclusion: Anxiety and depression were very common in lung cancer patients. Lack of surgery, young, and middle age, were independent risk factors for anxiety and depression. Therefore, medical workers should pay close attention to the emotional changes of young or middle-aged patients, or patients without the chance to undergo surgery.

BACKGROUND: Increasing studies were performed to explore the prognostic value of snail in lung cancer (LC), however, with inconsistent results. Hence, this systematic review is aimed to evaluate the prognostic role of snail in patients with LC. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search in the PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases will be conducted to identify eligible studies. Language is limited as English. We will employ hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) to estimate the correlations between snail expression and overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), recurrence-free survival (RFS), disease-free survival (DFS), and clinicopathological features. Meta-analysis will be performed using STATA 14.0 software. RESULTS: This study will provide a high-quality synthesis of current evidence of the correlations between snail expression and OS, PFS/RFS/DFS, and clinicopathological features. CONCLUSION: The study will provide updated evidence to assess whether the expression of snail is in association with poor prognosis in patients with LC. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: It is not necessary for ethical approval because individuals cannot be identified. The protocol will be disseminated in a peer-reviewed journal or presented at a relevant conference. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: This systematic review protocol has been registered in the PROSPERO network (No. CRD42018095191).

Several studies were conducted to explore the prognostic significance of Twist in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), however, contradictory results in different studies were reported. To this end, we presented a systematic review aiming to summarize the prognostic significance of Twist in patients with NSCLC. 5 studies involving a total of 572 patients were identified. The result indicated that high Twist expression was significantly associated with a worse overall survival (OS) (hazard ratio (HR) = 2.19, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) = 1.64-2.94, p < 0.001; I2 = 0.0%, fixed effect), recurrence-free survival (RFS) (HR = 2.476, 95% CI = 1.728-3.547, p < 0.001; I2 = 0.0%, fixed effect) and lymph node or other metastasis (odds rate (OR) = 0.419, 95% CI = 0.259-0.679, P < 0.001, fixed effect). Subgroup analysis revealed that the expression of Twist in Chinese patients might be more closely associated with the prognosis of NSCLC than in American patients. Overall, these results indicated that Twist over-expression in patients with NSCLC might be related to poor prognosis and serves as an unfavorable predictor of poor clinicopathological prognosis factor.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of Chinese medicine (CM) on patients with pancreatic cancer (PC) in a retrospective population-based study. METHODS: Between January 1, 2013, and August 30, 2016, according to whether received Western medicine treatment, the patients were included into either integrative medicine (IM) group or CM group. All enrolled patients were orally administrated with Gexia Zhuyu Decoction () or Liujun Ermu Decoction () by syndrome differentiation, twice a day, last for at least 2 months. The primary end point was overall survival (OS). RESULTS: A total of 174 patients with PC were enrolled in this study. In stage I/II, the median OS was 20.5 months in the IM group [95% confidence interval (CI), 12.499 to 28.501] and 11.17 months in the CM group (95% CI, 5.160 to 17.180, P=0.015). The 1- and 2-year survival rates for the two groups were 47.0%, 40.0% and 21.0%, 21.0%, respectively. In stage III/IV, median OS was 13.53 months (95% CI, 8.665 to 18.395) in the IM group versus 6.4 months (95% CI, 0.00 to 15.682) in the CM group, respectively (P=0.32). The 1- and 2-year survival rate for the IM and CM groups were 27.0%, 7.0% and 20.0%, 2.0%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Intervention of CM contributes to the different survival benefits for PC in different stages. Multimodality treatment might be a promising strategy for PC patients in early stage. While, in advanced stage, CM might be an alternative candidate for PC patients.

OBJECTIVE: To assist decision-makers interpret and choose among conflfl icting meta-analyses, as well as to offer treatment recommendations based on current best evidence by performing a systematic review of overlapping meta-analyses regarding Shenyi Capsule (, SC) plus chemotherapy versus chemotherapy of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: A literature search was conducted to select systematic reviews comparing SC plus chemotherapy with chemotherapy for NSCLC. Meta-analyses only composed of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) met the inclusion criteria. Two authors individually estimated the quality of meta-analysis and extracted data. The Jadad decision algorithm was applied to guarantee which meta-analysis provided the best original evidence. RESULTS: A total of 5 meta-analyses were included. All the studies composed of RCTs or quasi-RCTs and were regarded as level-II evidence. The scores of the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews ranged from 3 to 6 (median 4). A high-quality meta-analysis with more RCTs was chosen, which suggested that SC plus chemotherapy could increase incidence of short-term efficacy, improve the quality of life and survival rate in comparison to chemotherapy. However, there was no statistically significant difference between SC plus chemotherapy and chemotherapy regarding chemotherapy-induced side effect, such as liver and kidney function obstacle, leukopenia, hemoglobin decrement and gastrointestinal adverse reaction. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the best available evidence, treatment effect of SC plus chemotherapy was better than chemotherapy and did not increase side effects. Therefore, SC plus chemotherapy may be superior to chemotherapy for treating NSCLC. However, due to some limitations, SC plus chemotherapy should be cautiously considered, and further high-quality meta-analyses are needed.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are small subpopulations of neoplastic cells within a tumor, which have self-renewal and differentiation abilities and could generate new tumors with few cells. Researches have showed that CSCs are considered the most likely reason for cancer recurrence and metastasis. Accumulating evidences have showed that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has significant effect on CSCs. It could inhibit the proliferation, self-renew, and multidifferentiation of CSCs. We aimed to summarize the theories of CSCs in TCM, the inhibitory effect, and the pathway on CSCs of TCM. This review will provide potential new strategies and alternative perspectives for CSCs treatments and basic research into complementary and alternative medicine.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a common chronic disease in both adults and children. Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) and ß2-agonists are the major medications treating asthma with many side effects. Acupuncture has been used in many diseases including asthma. We aim to assess the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for asthma. METHODS: The following electronical databases will be searched from inception to January 1, 2017: Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), SinoMed, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database (CNKI), the Chinese Scientific Journal Database (VIP database), and the Wanfang database. We will also search reference lists of identified studies, potential gray literatures, relevant conference abstracts, and registers of clinical trials. Two reviewers will independently undertake study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment. Data will be synthesized by either the fixed-effects or random-effects model according to a heterogeneity test. Changes in lung function will be assessed as the primary outcome. The level of control, medication usage, quality of life, exacerbations, symptoms, adverse events will be evaluated as the secondary outcomes. The RevMan V.5.3.5 will be employed for meta-analysis. Continuous outcomes will be presented as mean difference or standard mean difference, while dichotomous data will be expressed as relative risk. RESULTS: This study will provide a high-quality synthesis of current evidence of acupuncture for asthma from several aspects including lung function, the level of control, medication usage, quality of life, exacerbations, symptoms and adverse events. CONCLUSION: The conclusion of our study will provide updated evidence to judge whether acupuncture is an effective intervention for children with asthma. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: It is not necessary for ethical approval because individuals cannot be identified. The protocol will be disseminated in a peer-reviewed journal or presented at a relevant conference. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: PROSPERO CRD42017054562.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether additional Chinese medicine (CM) could prolong survival and improve the quality of life (QOL) in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) compared with Western medicine (WM) alone. METHODS: This was a multicenter, prospective cohort study. A total of 474 hospitalized patients with stage III-IV NSCLC were recruited and divided into 2 groups. Patients in the WM group received radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and optimal supportive therapy according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines. In the integrative medicine (IM) group, individualized CM (Chinese patent medicines and injections) and WM were administered. The primary end point was overall survival, and the secondary end points were time to disease progression, adverse events, and QOL. Follow-up clinical examinations and chest radiography were performed every 2 months. RESULTS: The median survival was 16.60 months in the IM group and 13.13 months in the WM group (P<0.01). The incidences of loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting in the IM group were significantly lower than those in the WM group (P<0.05). The QOL based on Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Lung in the IM group was markedly higher than that in the WM group at the fourth course (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Additional CM may prolong survival and improve the QOL patients with NSCLC. The adverse effects of radio- and chemotherapy may be attenuated as CM is used in combination with conventional treatments.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of Lignum Sappan (LS) containing serum on the proliferation cycle arrest of human lung cancer cell line PG and its molecular mechanism. METHODS: The lung cancer PG cells were divided into four groups, i.e., the blank control group, the LS group, the LS plus cisplatin group, and the cisplatin group. They were cultured by RPMI-1640 with 20% blank serum, RPMI-1640 with 20% LS containing serum, RPMI-1640 with 20% LS containing serum plus 1 microg/mL cisplatin, and RPMI-1640 with 20% blank serum plus 1 microg/mL cisplatin, respectively. The morphology of PG cells was observed using light microscope and laser scanning confocal microscope in each group. The cell cycle arrest was observed using flow cytometry. The expression of P16 and Rb1 mRNA was tested by PCR method. RESULTS: Under the light microscope and laser scanning confocal microscope, the apoptosis degree of PG cells in the LS group was significant, but less than that of the LS plus cisplatin group as well as the cisplatin group. Compared with the blank control group, the proportion of PG cells increased at G0/ G1 and S phases (P < 0.05) and decreased at G2/M phase (P < 0.01) in the LS group; The proportion of PG cells increased at G2/M and S phases (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) and decreased at G0/G1 phase (P < 0.01) in the LS plus cisplatin group as well as the cisplatin group. Compared with the LS group, the proportion of PG cells increased at G2/M and S phases (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) and decreased at G0/G1 phase (P < 0.01) in the LS plus cisplatin group as well as the cisplatin group. There was no statistical difference in PG cells at each phase between the cisplatin group and the LS plus cisplatin group (P > 0.05). The expression of P16 and Rb1 mRNA increased in the LS group, when compared with the blank control group. They also increased in the cisplatin group and the LS plus cisplatin group, higher than that of the LS group (P < 0.05). There was no statistical difference in the expression of P16 and Rb1 mRNA between the cisplatin group and the LS plus cisplatin group (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: LS containing serum induced PG cell apoptosis by up-regulating the mRNA transcription levels of P16 and Rb1, thus resulting in PG cell arrest at G0/G1 and S phases, which was different from the manner of cisplatin (achieved by arresting PG cells at G2/M and S phases through regulating cyclinB1 mRNA transcription).

To elucidate the dynamic characteristics of cotton growth and development after soil salt content reduction (SD) at bud stage and its effect on yield formation, a pot experiment was conducted in which soil salt content was declined from 5 per thousand level to 2 per thousand level at cotton bud stage. The results showed that the plant height, biomass, total fruit branch and fruit node number, boll number, boll mass of cotton plants increased after soil salt content reduction at bud stage. The distribution proportions of biomass in root and boll decreased after soil salt content reduction, however, the distribution proportions of biomass in leaf, main stem and fruit branch were on the rise. The growth rate of cotton plant increased after soil salt content reduction. Plant dry matter accumulation rate of SD cotton exceeded CK cotton at 22 days after soil salt content reduction. The response of different organs of cotton plant were different to soil salt content reduction, the plant height was the earliest, followed by the fruit branch and fruit node formation, and the bud and boll were the latest, which indicated that the compensation effect of cotton growth and development after soil salt content reduction at bud stage firstly appeared on the formation and growth of new leaf, fruit branch and fruit node, and on this basis, gradually brought out yield compensation.

OBJECTIVE: To study the qi deficiency syndrome distribution and quality of life (QOL) of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: A questionnaire survey was conducted in 120 patients with advanced NSCLC using the QOL scale "Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy" (FACT-L) (Version 4.0). Meanwhile, syndrome typing was performed. On the basis of results of syndrome typing, patients of different syndrome types were grouped and compared, thus studying the distribution of advanced NSCLC patients of qi deficiency syndrome and qi deficiency syndrome correlated QOL features. RESULTS: Qi deficiency, blood stasis, yin deficiency, phlegm and dampness dominated in syndrome types of the 120 patients with advanced NSCLC. Of syndrome types accounting for larger ratios in 112 patients, pure qi deficiency syndrome accounted for 30.36% (34 cases), qi deficiency and blood stasis syndrome for 18. 75% (21 cases), both qi and yin deficiency syndrome for 10. 71% (12 cases). There was no correlation between the appearance of qi deficiency syndrome and patients' age, sex, pathological typing (adenocarcinoma/squamous carcinoma), or the disease duration. NSCLC patients in phase IV were mostly complicated with qi deficiency syndrome (P<0.05). Scores of physical states, emotional states, functional states, and total scores in the FACT-L scale were lower in those complicated with qi deficiency syndrome (89 cases) than in those without complicated qi deficiency syndrome (31 cases), showing statistical difference (P<0.01, P<0.05). The scores of the lung cancer specific module (additional concerns) in the FACT-L scale showed statistical difference, sequenced as qi deficiency and blood stasis syndrome > pure qi deficiency syndrome > both qi and yin deficiency syndrome (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Qi deficiency syndrome is the main syndrome of advanced NSCLC. The QOL of advanced NSCLC patients complicated with qi deficiency syndrome was poorer than those without complicated qi deficiency syndrome. Besides, along with the aggravation of qi deficiency syndrome, the QOL decreased somewhat. It suggested that symptomatic treatment of qi deficiency syndrome could improve advanced NSCLC patients' QOL.
