RESUMO

Peripheral nerve blockade (PNB) is a common treatment to relieve postoperative pain. However, local anesthetics alone have a short duration of action and severe side effects during postoperative analgesia. In order to overcome these limitations, the present study reported an injectable hydrogel with a drug slow-release profile for regional nerve blockade. The injectable hydrogel was prepared by crosslinking with gelatin and NHS-PEG-NHS, which was degradable in the physiological environment and displayed sustainable release of anesthetics locally, thus improving the disadvantage of the high toxicity of local anesthetics. In this regard, we conducted a series of in vitro characterizations and proved that the hydrogel has a porous three-dimensional mesh structure with high drug loading capability, and sustainable drug release profile. And cytotoxicity experiments confirmed the good biocompatibility of the hydrogel. It was shown that using the animal sciatic nerve block model, the analgesic effect was greatly improved in vivo, and there was no obvious evidence of permanent inflammation or nerve damage in the block site's sections. This locally slow-release platform, combined with local anesthetics, is therefore a promising contender for long-acting analgesia.

To reduce the influence of gain-phase errors and improve the performance of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, a robust sparse Bayesian two-dimensional (2D) DOA estimation method with gain-phase errors is proposed for L-shaped sensor arrays. The proposed method introduces an auxiliary angle to transform the 2D DOA estimation problem into two 1D angle estimation problems. A sparse representation model with gain-phase errors is constructed using the diagonal element vector of the cross-correlation covariance matrix of two submatrices of the L-shaped sensor array. The expectation maximization algorithm derives unknown parameter expression, which is used for iterative operations to obtain off-grid and signal precision. Using these parameters, a new spatial spectral function is constructed to estimate the auxiliary angle. The obtained auxiliary angle is substituted into a sparse representation model with gain and phase errors, and then the sparse Bayesian learning method is used to estimate the elevation angle of the incident signal. Finally, according to the relationship of the three angles, the azimuth angle can be estimated. The simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively realize the automatic matching of the azimuth and elevation angles of the incident signal, and improves the accuracy of DOA estimation and angular resolution.

In underwater acoustic signal processing, direction of arrival (DOA) estimation can provide important information for target tracking and localization. To address underdetermined wideband signal processing in underwater passive detection system, this paper proposes a novel underdetermined wideband DOA estimation method equipped with the nested array (NA) using focused atomic norm minimization (ANM), where the signal source number detection is accomplished by information theory criteria. In the proposed DOA estimation method, especially, after vectoring the covariance matrix of each frequency bin, each corresponding obtained vector is focused into the predefined frequency bin by focused matrix. Then, the collected averaged vector is considered as virtual array model, whose steering vector exhibits the Vandermonde structure in terms of the obtained virtual array geometries. Further, the new covariance matrix is recovered based on ANM by semi-definite programming (SDP), which utilizes the information of the Toeplitz structure. Finally, the Root-MUSIC algorithm is applied to estimate the DOAs. Simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms other underdetermined DOA estimation methods based on information theory in term of higher estimation accuracy.

Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) can provide a promising solution to underwater target tracking. Due to the limited computation and bandwidth resources, only a small part of nodes are selected to track the target at each interval. How to improve tracking accuracy with a small number of nodes is a key problem. In recent years, a node depth adjustment system has been developed and applied to issues of network deployment and routing protocol. As far as we know, all existing tracking schemes keep underwater nodes static or moving with water flow, and node depth adjustment has not been utilized for underwater target tracking yet. This paper studies node depth adjustment method for target tracking in UWSNs. Firstly, since a Fisher Information Matrix (FIM) can quantify the estimation accuracy, its relation to node depth is derived as a metric. Secondly, we formulate the node depth adjustment as an optimization problem to determine moving depth of activated node, under the constraint of moving range, the value of FIM is used as objective function, which is aimed to be minimized over moving distance of nodes. Thirdly, to efficiently solve the optimization problem, an improved Harmony Search (HS) algorithm is proposed, in which the generating probability is modified to improve searching speed and accuracy. Finally, simulation results are presented to verify performance of our scheme.

Target tracking is one of the broad applications of underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs). However, as a result of the temporal and spatial variability of acoustic channels, underwater acoustic communications suffer from an extremely limited bandwidth. In order to reduce network congestion, it is important to shorten the length of the data transmitted from local sensors to the fusion center by quantization. Although quantization can reduce bandwidth cost, it also brings about bad tracking performance as a result of information loss after quantization. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an optimal quantization-based target tracking scheme. It improves the tracking performance of low-bit quantized measurements by minimizing the additional covariance caused by quantization. The simulation demonstrates that our scheme performs much better than the conventional uniform quantization-based target tracking scheme and the increment of the data length affects our scheme only a little. Its tracking performance improves by only 4.4% from 2- to 3-bit, which means our scheme weakly depends on the number of data bits. Moreover, our scheme also weakly depends on the number of participate sensors, and it can work well in sparse sensor networks. In a 6 × 6 × 6 sensor network, compared with 4 × 4 × 4 sensor networks, the number of participant sensors increases by 334.92%, while the tracking accuracy using 1-bit quantized measurements improves by only 50.77%. Overall, our optimal quantization-based target tracking scheme can achieve the pursuit of data-efficiency, which fits the requirements of low-bandwidth UWSNs.

Phase-coherent underwater acoustic (UWA) communication systems typically employ multiple hydrophones in the receiver to achieve spatial diversity gain. However, small underwater platforms can only carry a single transducer which can not provide spatial diversity gain. In this paper, we propose single-carrier with frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) for phase-coherent synthetic aperture acoustic communications in which a virtual array is generated by the relative motion between the transmitter and the receiver. This paper presents synthetic aperture acoustic communication results using SC-FDE through data collected during a lake experiment in January 2016. The performance of two receiver algorithms is analyzed and compared, including the frequency domain equalizer (FDE) and the hybrid time frequency domain equalizer (HTFDE). The distances between the transmitter and the receiver in the experiment were about 5 km. The bit error rate (BER) and output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performances with different receiver elements and transmission numbers were presented. After combining multiple transmissions, error-free reception using a convolution code with a data rate of 8 kbps was demonstrated.

Multichannel receivers are usually employed in high-rate underwater acoustic communication to achieve spatial diversity. In the context of multichannel underwater acoustic communications, passive time reversal (TR) combined with a single-channel adaptive decision feedback equalizer (TR-DFE) is a low-complexity solution to achieve both spatial and temporal focusing. In this paper, we present a novel receiver structure to combine passive time reversal with a low-order multichannel adaptive decision feedback equalizer (TR-MC-DFE) to improve the performance of the conventional TR-DFE. First, the proposed method divides the whole received array into several subarrays. Second, we conduct passive time reversal processing in each subarray. Third, the multiple subarray outputs are equalized with a low-order multichannel DFE. We also investigated different channel estimation methods, including least squares (LS), orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP), and improved proportionate normalized least mean squares (IPNLMS). The bit error rate (BER) and output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performances of the receiver algorithms are evaluated using simulation and real data collected in a lake experiment. The source-receiver range is 7.4 km, and the data rate with quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal is 8 kbits/s. The uncoded BER of the single input multiple output (SIMO) systems varies between 1 × 10 - 1 and 2 × 10 - 2 for the conventional TR-DFE, and between 1 × 10 - 2 and 1 × 10 - 3 for the proposed TR-MC-DFE when eight hydrophones are utilized. Compared to conventional TR-DFE, the average output SNR of the experimental data is enhanced by 3 dB.

We study the problem of energy-efficient target tracking in underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs). Since sensors of UWSNs are battery-powered, it is impracticable to replace the batteries when exhausted. This means that the battery life affects the lifetime of the whole network. In order to extend the network lifetime, it is worth reducing the energy consumption on the premise of sufficient tracking accuracy. This paper proposes an energy-efficient filter that implements the tradeoff between communication cost and tracking accuracy. Under the distributed fusion framework, local sensors should not send their weak information to the fusion center if their measurement residuals are smaller than the pre-given threshold. In order to guarantee the target tracking accuracy, artificial measurements are generated to compensate for those unsent real measurements. Then, an adaptive scheme is derived to take full advantages of the artificial measurements-based filter in terms of energy-efficiency. Furthermore, a computationally efficient optimal sensor selection scheme is proposed to improve tracking accuracy on the premise of employing the same number of sensors. Simulation demonstrates that our scheme has superior advantages in the tradeoff between communication cost and tracking accuracy. It saves much energy while loosing little tracking accuracy or improves tracking performance with less additional energy cost.

RESUMO

This letter presents an improved space time prewhitening method for linear frequency modulation (LFM) reverberation. The proposed method transforms the reverberation to fractional Fourier domain to whiten using fractional Fourier transform. The linear varying frequency in LFM reverberation is focused on a stationary frequency, and the adjacent block signal is used as the reference signal of prewhitening. Finally, experiment results with real reverberation data verify that the proposed method improves the detection performance of active sonar in shallow sea significantly.
