RESUMO

Complex pollutants are discharging and accumulating in rivers and oceans, requiring a coupled strategy to resolve pollutants efficiently. A novel method is proposed to treat multiple pollutants with C,N co-doped TiO2 hollow nanofibers coated stainless steel meshes which can realize efficient oil/water separation and visible light-drove dyes photodegradation. The poly(divinylbenzene-co-vinylbenzene chloride), P(DVB-co-VBC), nanofibers are generated by precipitate cationic polymerization on the mesh framework, following with quaternization by triethylamine for N doping. Then, TiO2 is coated on the polymeric nanofibers via in-situ sol-gel process of tetrabutyl titanate. The functional mesh coated with C,N co-doped TiO2 hollow nanofibers is obtained after calcination under nitrogen atmosphere. The resultant mesh demonstrates superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic property which is promising in oil/water separation. More importantly, the C,N co-doped TiO2 hollow nanofibers endow the mesh with high photodegradation ability to dyes under visible light. This work draws an affordable but high-performance multifunctional mesh for potential applications in wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Bacterial diversity and its functions are essential to soil health. N fertilization changes bacterial communities and interferes with the soil biogeochemical N cycle. In this study, bacterial community and soil physicochemical properties were studied in 2018 after applying N fertilizers (0, 52.5, 105, 157.5, and 210 kg N ha-1) for a long (2003-2018) and a short (2003-2004) duration in a wheat field on the Loess Plateau of China. Soil bacteria were determined using 16S rRNA Illumina-MiSeq®, and the prediction function was analyzed through PICRUSt. The study showed that N fertilizer significantly changed the diversity and abundance of bacterial communities. The phyla Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Chloroflexi were most abundant, accounting for 74-80% of the bacterial community abundance. The optimum rates of N fertilizer application (N105) maintain soil health by promoting soil microbial diversity and abundance. The bacterial population abundance was higher after short-term N application than after N application for a long duration and lowest with the high N-fertilizer treatment (N210). High N enrichment led to more heterotrophic N-fixing microorganisms (Alphaproteobacteria), in which metabolism and genetic information processing dominated, while cellular processes, genetic information processing, metabolism, and organismal systems were the main functional categories under low N. The phyla Gemmatimonadetes, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Chloroflexi were the key bacteria in the co-occurrence network. The genus Saccharimonadales of the superphylum Patescibacteria has a more significant impact under low N treatment. Long-term N fertilization affected the soil pH, NO3-N, and other physicochemical properties, and soil NO3-N was the highest indicator, contributing 81% of the bacterial community function under different N fertilizer treatments.

RESUMO

In order to understand the effects of lucerne cropping rotation on the bacterial community of loess soil, a long-term field experiment was conducted in rain-fed agricultural area of Loess Plateau. The cropping systems included continuous lucerne (Medicago sativa, LC), lucerne removed and rotated with spring wheat (Triticum aestivum, LFW), lucerne removed and rotated with corn (Zea mays, LFC), lucerne removed and rotated with potato (Solanum tuberosum, LP), and lucerne removed and rotated with continuous millet (Panicum miliaceum, LM). Based on 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing technology, we investigated soil bacterial community structure and diversity in different cropping systems, and predicted ecological function using PICRUSt method. The results showed that the dominant phyla of loess soil bacteria were Actinomycetes (20.3%-32.0%), Proteobacteria (19.2%-23.0%), Acidobacteria (12.4%-14.2%) and Chloroflexus (11.0%-12.7%). The dominant genus was Bacillus (1.9%) in lucerne-corn system and Pseudarthrobacter (2.5%) in other treatments. Rotation with annual crops decreased the relative abundance of Actinobacteria and increased that of Chloroflexi and Firmicutes. Redundancy analysis showed that the main soil factors driving soil bacterial community structure were nitrate, ammonium, and total nitrogen. PICRUSt function prediction results showed that metabolism (78.6%-79.1%) was the main function of soil bacterial communities in loess soil. Rotation with continued annual crops significantly decreased the abundance of soil bacterial carbohydrate metabolism functional genes, and significantly increased the abundance of functional genes for soil bacterial cofactors and vitamin metabolism, neurodegenerative diseases, and immune system. In conclusion, lucerne removed and rotated with continuous annual crops changed soil bacterial community structure and ecological functions. This study provided theoretical reference to explore succession characteristics of soil bacteria and to select succeeding crops for alfalfa in loess soil.

RESUMO

Ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB) mediate a crucial step in nitrogen (N) metabolism. The effect of N fertilizer rates on AOA and AOB communities is less studied in the wheat-fallow system from semi-arid areas. Based on a 17-year wheat field experiment, we explored the effect of five N fertilizer rates (0, 52.5, 105, 157.5, and 210 kg ha-1 yr-1) on the AOA and AOB community composition. This study showed that the grain yield of wheat reached the maximum at 105 kg N ha-1 (49% higher than control), and no further significant increase was observed at higher N rates. With the increase of N, AOA abundance decreased in a regular trend from 4.88 × 107 to 1.05 × 107 copies g-1 dry soil, while AOB abundance increased from 3.63 × 107 up to a maximum of 8.24 × 107 copies g-1 dry soil with the N105 treatment (105 kg N ha-1 yr-1). Application rates of N fertilizer had a more significant impact on the AOB diversity than on AOA diversity, and the highest AOB diversity was found under the N105 treatment in this weak alkaline soil. The predominant phyla of AOA and AOB were Thaumarchaeota and Proteobacteria, respectively, and higher N treatment (N210) resulted in a significant decrease in the relative abundance of genus Nitrosospira. In addition, AOA and AOB communities were significantly associated with grain yield of wheat, soil potential nitrification activity (PNA), and some soil physicochemical parameters such as pH, NH4-N, and NO3-N. Among them, soil moisture was the most influential edaphic factor for structuring the AOA community and NH4-N for the AOB community. Overall, 105 kg N ha-1 yr-1 was optimum for the AOB community and wheat yield in the semi-arid area.

RESUMO

Soil autotrophic bacteria play a crucial role in regulating CO2 fixation and crop productivity. However, the information is limited to how fertilization amendments alter soil autotrophic bacterial community, crop yield, and carbon emission efficiency (CEE). Here, we estimated the impact of the structure and co-occurrence network of soil autotrophic bacterial community on maize yield and CEE. A long-term field experiment was conducted with five fertilization treatments in semiarid Loess Plateau, including no amendment (NA), chemical fertilizer (CF), chemical fertilizer plus commercial organic fertilizer (SC), commercial organic fertilizer (SM), and maize straw (MS). The results showed that fertilization amendments impacted the structure and network of soil Calvin-Benson-Bassham (CBB) (cbbL) gene-carrying bacterial community via changing soil pH and NO3-N. Compared with no amendment, the cbbL-carrying bacterial diversity was increased under the SC, SM, and MS treatments but decreased under the CF treatment. Soil autotrophic bacterial network contained distinct microbial modules that consisted of closely associated microbial species. We detected the higher abundances of soil cbbL-carrying bacterial genus Xanthobacter, Bradyrhizobium, and Nitrosospira. Structural equation modeling further suggested that the diversity, composition, and network of autotrophic bacterial community had strongly positive relationships with CEE and maize yield. Taken together, our results suggest that soil autotrophic bacterial community may drive crop productivity and CEE, and mitigate the atmospheric greenhouse effect.

RESUMO

It is critical to understand how farming practices affect the carbon and nitrogen footprints of agricultural production. Grain yield, economic return, and carbon and nitrogen footprints of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were examined under different tillage-mulch practices. Wheat was grown over 15 years (2002-2016) in the semi-arid region of the western Loess Plateau of China under six tillage-mulch practices: traditional plough with no straw mulching (T), no-till without straw mulching (NT), traditional plough with straw mulching (TS), no-till without straw mulching (NTS), traditional plough with plastic mulching (TP), no-till with plastic mulching (NTP). Average wheat yield over 15 years under NTS, NTP, TP and TS was increased by 28, 24, 22, and 13%, respectively, compared to T. Average net return was greatest under NTS and lowest under TP. The soils under all six tillage-mulch practices gained a considerably large amount of soil organic carbon (SOC) over the 15 yr. The increase in SOC in the 0-30 cm soil layer was greatest under NTS and lowest under T. When changes in soil C were included in the calculations, treatments of NT, TS, NTS, and NTP sharply reduced total greenhouse gas (GHG) emission compared to T. Compared to T, the carbon footprint was decreased by 180, 44, and 123% under NTS, NT, and TS, respectively, but was increased by 153% under TP. Compared to T, the nitrogen footprint was 24-26% lower in TP and NTP, but was not significantly different under NTS, NT, and TS. Therefore, NTS enhanced yield and net return, and reduced GHG and the carbon footprint without increasing the nitrogen footprint, and should be adopted to mitigate the environmental impacts of wheat production in the semiarid Loess Plateau.

RESUMO

Sole biochar addition or microbial inoculation as a soil amendment helps to reduce cadmium (Cd) toxicity in polluted agricultural soils. Yet the synergistic effects of microorganisms and biochar application on Cd absorption and plant productivity remain unclear. Therefore, a pot experiment was conducted to investigate the combined effect of microorganisms (Trichoderma harzianum L. and Bacillus subtilis L.), biochar (maize straw, cow manure, and poultry manure), and Cd (0, 10, and 30 ppm) on plant physiology and growth to test how biochar influences microbial growth and plant nutrient uptake, and how biochar ameliorates under Cd-stressed soil. Results showed that in comparison to non-Cd polluted soil, the highest reduction in chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency, and intercellular CO2 were observed in Cd2 (30 ppm), which were 9.34%, 22.95%, 40.45%, 29.07%, 20.67%, and 22.55% respectively less than the control Cd0 (0 ppm). Among sole inoculation of microorganisms, highest stomatal conductance, water use efficiency, and intercellular CO2 were recorded with combined inoculation of both microorganisms (M3), which were 5.92%, 7.65%, and 7.28% respectively higher than the control, and reduced the Cd concentration in soil, root, and shoot by 21.34%, 28.36%, and 20.95%, respectively, compared to the control. Similarly, co-application of microorganisms and biochar ameliorated the adverse effect of Cd in soybean as well as significantly improved plant biomass, photosynthetic activity, nutrient contents, and antioxidant enzyme activities, and minimized the production of reactive oxygen species and Cd content in plants. Soil amended with poultry manure biochar had significantly improved the soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorous, and available potassium by 43.53%, 36.97%, 22.28%, and 4.24%, respectively, and decreased the concentration of Cd in plant root and shoot by 34.68% and 47.96%, respectively, compared to the control. These findings indicate that the combined use of microorganisms and biochar as an amendment have important synergistic effects not only on the absorption of nutrients but also on the reduction of soybean Cd intake, and improve plant physiology of soybean cultivated in Cd-polluted soils as compared to sole application of microorganisms or biochar.

RESUMO

Cadmium (Cd) is an unessential trace element in plants that is ubiquitous in the environment. Anthropogenic activities such as disposal of urban refuse, smelting, mining, metal manufacturing, and application of synthetic phosphate fertilizers enhance the concentration of Cd in the environment and are carcinogenic to human health. In this manuscript, we reviewed the sources of Cd contamination to the environment, soil factors affecting the Cd uptake, the dynamics of Cd in the soil rhizosphere, uptake mechanisms, translocation, and toxicity of Cd in plants. In crop plants, the toxicity of Cd reduces uptake and translocation of nutrients and water, increases oxidative damage, disrupts plant metabolism, and inhibits plant morphology and physiology. In addition, the defense mechanism in plants against Cd toxicity and potential remediation strategies, including the use of biochar, minerals nutrients, compost, organic manure, growth regulators, and hormones, and application of phytoremediation, bioremediation, and chemical methods are also highlighted in this review. This manuscript may help to determine the ecological importance of Cd stress in interdisciplinary studies and essential remediation strategies to overcome the contamination of Cd in agricultural soils.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The probability of Breast Imaging Reporting and Data Systems (BI-RADS) 4 lesions being malignant is 2%-95%, which shows the difficulty to make a diagnosis. Radiomics models based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can replace clinicopathological diagnosis with high performance. In the present study, we developed and tested a radiomics model based on MRI images that can predict the malignancy of BI-RADS 4 breast lesions. METHODS: We retrospective enrolled a total of 216 BI-RADS 4 patients MRI and clinical information. We extracted 3,474 radiomics features from dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE), T2-weighted images (T2WI), and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) MRI images. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and logistic regression were used to select features and build radiomics models based on different sequence combinations. We built eight radiomics models which were based on DCE, DWI, T2WI, DCE+DWI, DCE+T2WI, DWI+T2WI, and DCE+DWI+T2WI and a clinical predictive model built based on the visual assessment of radiologists. A nomogram was constructed with the best radiomics signature combined with patient characteristics. The calibration curves for the radiomics signature and nomogram were conducted, combined with the Hosmer-Lemeshow test. RESULTS: Pearson's correlation was used to eliminate 3,329 irrelevant features, and then LASSO and logistic regression were used to screen the remaining feature coefficients for each model we built. Finally, 12 related features were obtained in the model which had the best performance. These 12 features were used to build a radiomics model in combination with the actual clinical diagnosis of benign or malignant lesion labels we have obtained. The best model built by 12 features from the 3 sequences has an AUC value of 0.939 (95% CI, 0.884-0.994) and an accuracy of 0.931 in the testing cohort. The sensitivity, specificity, precision and Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) of testing cohort are 0.932, 0.923, 0.982, and 0.791, respectively. The nomogram has also been verified to have calibration curves with good overlap. CONCLUSIONS: Radiomics is beneficial in the malignancy prediction of BI-RADS 4 breast lesions. The radiomics predictive model built by the combination of DCE, DWI, and T2WI sequences has great application potential.

RESUMO

Soil physiochemical properties are regulated by cropping practices, but little is known about how tillage influences soil microbial community diversity and functions. Here, we assessed soil bacterial community assembly and functional profiles in relation to tillage. Soils, collected in 2018 from a 17-year field experiment in northwestern China, were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing and the PICRUSt approach. The taxonomic diversity of bacterial communities was dominated primarily by the phyla Proteobacteria (32-56%), Bacteroidetes (12-33%), and Actinobacteria (17-27%). Alpha diversity (Chao1, Shannon, Simpson, and operational taxonomic unit (OTU) richness) was highest under no-tillage with crop residue removed (NT). Crop residue retention on the soil surface (NTS) or incorporated into soil (TS) promoted the abundance of Proteobacteria by 16 to 74% as compared to conventional tillage (T). Tillage practices mainly affected the pathways of soil metabolism, genetic information processing, and environmental information processing. Soil organic C and NH4-N were the principal contributors to the diversity and composition of soil microbiota, whereas soil pH, total nitrogen, total P, and moisture had little effect. Our results suggest that long-term conservation practices with no-tillage and crop residue retention shape soil bacterial community composition through modifying soil physicochemical properties and promoting the metabolic function of soil microbiomes.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We evaluated the performance of the newly proposed radiomics of multiparametric MRI (RMM), developed and validated based on a multicenter dataset adopting a radiomic strategy, for pretreatment prediction of pathologic complete response (pCR) to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in breast cancer. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: A total of 586 potentially eligible patients were retrospectively enrolled from four hospitals (primary cohort and external validation cohort 1-3). Quantitative imaging features were extracted from T2-weighted imaging, diffusion-weighted imaging, and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted imaging before NAC for each patient. With features selected using a coarse to fine feature selection strategy, four radiomic signatures were constructed based on each of the three MRI sequences and their combination. RMM was developed based on the best radiomic signature incorporating with independent clinicopathologic risk factors. The performance of RMM was assessed with respect to its discrimination and clinical usefulness, and compared with that of clinical information-based prediction model. RESULTS: Radiomic signature combining multiparametric MRI achieved an AUC of 0.79 (the highest among the four radiomic signatures). The signature further achieved good performances in hormone receptor-positive and HER2-negative group and triple-negative group. RMM yielded an AUC of 0.86, which was significantly higher than that of clinical model in two of the three external validation cohorts. CONCLUSIONS: The study suggested a possibility that RMM provided a potential tool to develop a model for predicting pCR to NAC in breast cancer.

RESUMO

Examination of heavy metal sources in soils from a resource-based region is essential for source identification and implementation of restoration strategies regarding soil contamination. A total of 1069 samples were collected from cropland soils in the Baiyin District (Loess Plateau, Northwest China), a characteristically resource-based region to investigate the sources of arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), vanadium (V), and zinc (Zn). Source identification was analyzed by multiple methods including spatial deviation (SD), correlation analysis (CA), enrichment factor (EF), principal component analysis (PCA), geographic information system (GIS), and positive matrix factorization (PMF). The results showed the combined applications of PMF, GIS, and PCA were accurate, pragmatic, and effective for source apportionment. Three origins were identified and the contribution rates were calculated as follows: approximately 95% of As came from wastewater irrigation; 75, 88, 60, and 76% of Cr, Mn, Ni, and V were separately derived from natural origins; and 81, 93, and 70% of Cu, Pb, and Zn originated from industrial sources, respectively. Natural origins, industrial sources, and wastewater irrigation were the three main contributors of heavy metals to cropland soils in this region.

RESUMO

In arid areas, water shortage is threating agricultural sustainability, and strip-intercropping may serve as a strategy to alleviate the challenge. Here we show that strip-intercropping enhances the spatial distributions of soil water across the 0-110 cm rooting zones, improves the coordination of soil water sharing during the co-growth period, and provides compensatory effect for available soil water. In a three-year (2009-2011) experiment, shorter-season pea (Pisum sativum L.) was sown in alternate strips with longer-season maize (Zea mays L.) without or with an artificially-inserted root barrier (a solid plastic sheet) between the strips. The intercropped pea used soil water mostly in the top 20-cm layers, whereas maize plants were able to absorb water from deeper-layers of the neighboring pea strips. After pea harvest, the intercropped maize obtained compensatory soil water from the pea strips. The pea-maize intercropping without the root barrier increased grain yield by 25% and enhanced water use efficiency by 24% compared with the intercropping with the root barrier. The improvement in crop yield and water use efficiency was partly attributable to the coordinated soil water sharing between the inter-strips and the compensatory effect from the early-maturing pea to the late-maturing maize.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer survivors are at high risk for fracture due to cancer treatment-induced bone loss, however, data is scarce regarding the scope of this problem from an epidemiologic and health services perspective among Chinese women with breast cancer. METHODS: We designed a cross-sectional study comparing prevalence of vertebral fractures among age- and BMI-matched women from two cohorts. Women in the Breast Cancer Survivors cohort were enrolled from a large cancer hospital in Beijing. Eligibility criteria included age 50-70 years, initiation of treatment for breast cancer at least 5 years prior to enrollment, and no history of metabolic bone disease or bone metastases. Data collected included sociodemographic characteristics; fracture-related risk factors, screening and preventive measures; breast cancer history; and thoracolumbar x-ray. The matched comparator group was selected from participants enrolled in the Peking Vertebral Fracture Study, an independent cohort of healthy community-dwelling postmenopausal women from Beijing. RESULTS: Two hundred breast cancer survivors were enrolled (mean age 57.5 ± 4.9 years), and compared with 200 matched healthy women. Twenty-two (11%) vertebral fractures were identified among breast cancer survivors compared with 7 (3.5%) vertebral fractures in the comparison group, yielding an adjusted odds ratio for vertebral fracture of 4.16 (95%CI 1.69-10.21, p < 0.01). The majority had early stage (85.3%) and estrogen and/or progesterone receptor positive (84.6%) breast cancer. Approximately half of breast cancer survivors reported taking calcium supplements, 6.1% reported taking vitamin D supplements, and only 27% reported having a bone density scan since being diagnosed with breast cancer. CONCLUSIONS: Despite a four-fold increased odds of prevalent vertebral fracture among Chinese breast cancer survivors in our study, rates of screening for osteoporosis and fracture risk were low reflecting a lack of standardization of care regarding cancer-treatment induced bone loss.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study determined the long-term effect of tillage systems on soil properties and crop yields in a semi-arid environment. Field pea (Pisum sativum L.) and spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were alternately grown in six tillage systems at Dingxi (35° 28' N, 104° 44' E), north-west China starting in 2001. RESULTS: After the first 6 years of experiments, conventional tillage with stubble incorporating (TS) and no-till with stubble cover (NTS) increased soil organic matter by 9.9% and 13.0%, respectively, compared to the conventional tillage with stubble removed (T); both TS and NTS also increased soil microbial counts, available K and P, and total N. No-till with stubble removed (NT), NTS and NTP (no-till with plastic mulching) had 20.7%, 62.6% and 43.7% greater alkaline phosphatase activity compared to the T treatment. Soil catalase, urease and invertase activities were all greater in the no-till treatments than in the T treatment. Averaged across 6 years, both wheat and pea achieved highest grain yields under NTS treatment. CONCLUSION: No-till with stubble retention is the most promising system for improving soil physical, biological and chemical properties, and increasing crop yields, and thus, this system can be adopted in areas with conditions similar to the semi-arid north-west China. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

This paper investigated soil moisture in alfalfa (Medicago sativa) cropland with different growth years (1, 3, 8, 12 and 14 years) and discussed the optimum growth years of alfalfa on the Loess Plateau of central Gansu. The results showed that the soil moisture along 0-300 cm soil profile of alfalfa croplands with different growth years was obviously lower than that of the local soil stable moisture. The soil water contents in croplands with alfalfa that had grown for 12 and 14 years were only 9.2% and 7.1% of local soil stable moisture, respectively, which were even lower than the lower limit of alfalfa growth. The average soil dryness indexes along 0-300 cm soil profile in 1, 3, 8, 12 and 14 years alfalfa croplands were 125.4%, 30.5%, 18.4%, -34.2% and -83.3% respectively. The results indicated that soil dryness occurred to varying degrees with different growth years except croplands with alfalfa grown for 1 year. With the increase of growth years of alfalfa, the soil dryness intensity increased and the soil dryness rate decreased. According to the soil moisture and alfalfa productivity results in this study, it could be concluded that the optimum growth years of alfalfa are 8-10 years in semiarid areas of the Loess Plateau.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to investigate the pathologic basis of the difference between clinical response and pathologic response of breast carcinoma after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. METHODS: two hundred and nine cases of breast cancer with neoadjuvant therapy were analyzed and clinical data were collected from June, 2005 to December, 2007. All patients had core needle biopsy taken before neoadjuvant chemotherapy and were operated within 4 weeks after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Clinical examination, X-ray of breast and/or B ultrasonography of primary breast focus were taken before and after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Clinical responses of breast primary focus were evaluated according to RECIST (response evaluation criteria in solid tumors) version 1.1.Pathologic responses of breast primary focus were evaluated according to Miller and Payne (MP) grading system. SPSS 15.0 software was used to statistical analysis. RESULTS: (1) Clinical responses basing on clinical examination showed complete response, partial response, stable disease and progressive response, in 33, 124, 41 and 11 cases respectively. (2) Eighty-seven cases had X-ray of breast taken before and after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Clinical response basing on X-ray, showed complete response, partial response and stable disease in 8, 42 and 37 cases respectively. (3) Pathologic responses of breast primary focus were as MP1 (14 cases), MP2 (35 cases), MP3 (106 cases), MP4 (36 cases) and MP5 (18 cases). (4) The clinical response basing on clinical examination were related to the pathologic response (χ(2) = 33.668, P = 0.001); and the clinical response basing on X-ray of breast were also related to the pathologic response (χ(2) = 22.404, P = 0.004). (5) The pathologic basis of the difference between the pathologic response and the clinical response basing on X-ray of breast were: embolism of carcinoma, mucinous carcinoma, intraductal carcinoma with ossifying-type calcification, nodular fibrosis and others. CONCLUSIONS: the clinical response may be related to the pathologic response. The difference between the two may be caused by pathologic changes. Some benign and malignant pathologic changes may contribute to the under-estimation of clinical response over pathologic response; whereas embolism of carcinoma may contribute to the over-estimation of clinical response over pathologic response.

RESUMO

A field experiment was conducted in Lijiabu Town of Dingxi City, Gansu Province to study the soil respiration and its relations with the canopy temperature and soil moisture content in a rotation system with spring wheat and pea under effects of different tillage measures. Six treatments were installed, i.e., tillage with no straw- or plastic mulch (conventional tillage, T), tillage with straw mulch (TS), tillage with plastic mulch (TP), no-tillage (NT), no-tillage with straw mulch (NTS), and no-tillage with plastic mulch (NTP). During the growth periods of spring wheat and pea, soil respiration had different change patterns, with the peaks appeared at the early jointing, grain-filling, and maturing stages of spring wheat, and at the 5-leaf, silking, flowering and poding, in spring wheat field between treatments NTS and T, and the soil respiration rate was significantlyand maturing stages of pea. There was an obvious difference in the diurnal change of soil respiration lower in NTS than in T; while the soil respiration in pea field had less diurnal chan ge. Soil respiration rate had a significant linear relationship with the canopy temperature of both spring wheat andpea, the correlation coefficient being the highest at booting stage of spring wheat and at flowering and poding stage of pea, followed by at grain-filling stage of spring wheat and at branching stage of pea. There was also a significant parabola relationship between soil respiration rate and soil moisture content, the correlation coefficient being higher under conservation tillage than under conventional tillage, with the highest under NTS. The moisture content in 10-30 cm soil layer of spring wheat field and that in 5-10 cm soil layer of pea field had the greatest effects on soil respiration. Comparing with conventional tillage, all the five conservation tillage measures decreased soil respiration, with the best effects of no-tillage with straw mulch.

RESUMO

By the methods of hand-sorting, Tullgren's and Baermann's, the animal community structure in greenhouse soils with different planting years in Shouguang City of Shandong Province was investigated from March 2006 to April 2007. A total of 20966 soil animals belonging to 3 phylums and 12 classes were obtained. Collembola, Nematoda, Acariformes and Oribatida were the dominant groups, accounting for 82.3% of the total individuals. The soil animals had an obvious vertical distribution pattern, with most of them assembled in surface soil and occupying 75.4% and 14.6% of the total at the depths of 0-5 cm and 5-10 cm, respectively. The animals' amount in greenhouse soils was the highest from March to May and from October to December, and the lowest in August; while that in open field soils was the highest from July to September, and the lowest in January. The animal community in greenhouse soils in this region had a high diversity, but the density of dominant groups increased obviously with increasing planting years, resulting in a decrease of diversity index.
