RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Craving is a core feature of addiction. Rumination and depression play a crucial role in the process of methamphetamine addiction. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between rumination, depression and craving in methamphetamine patients, which has not been explored yet. METHODS: A total of 778 patients with methamphetamine user disorder (MUD) at the Xinhua Drug Rehabilitation Center, located in Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, China. We used a set of self-administered questionnaires that included socio-demographic, detailed drug use history, rumination, depression and craving information. The Rumination Response Scale (RRS) was used to measure rumination, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) to measure depression and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) to measure craving. RESULTS: There was a significant positive correlation between rumination and craving, or depression, and between depression and craving. Furthermore, depression mediated between rumination and craving, with a mediation effect of 160%. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that there is a close interrelationship between rumination, craving and depression in MUD patients, and that depression may play a mediating role between rumination and craving.

This is the first study to investigate the relationship between rumination and craving during withdrawal in methamphetamine dependent patients and the mediating role of depression.Among methamphetamine patients, it was found that reflection was positively correlated with rumination and depression, depression and craving, rumination and craving, and depression plays the mediating role between rumination and craving. These findings suggest that interventions to reduce depression and rumination may also be effective for withdrawal and relapse reduction in methamphetamine patients, providing further rationale for the treatment of methamphetamine patients.

RESUMO

This study systematically optimized the key operating parameters and interpreted their effecting mechanisms in a flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) system. The optimal voltage, activated carbon electrode content, electrolyte concentration, feedwater flowrate, and electrode flowrate for desalinating low salinity feedwater (1.0 g L-1 NaCl) were determined to be 1.8 V, 2.0 wt%, 10.0 g L-1, 80 mL min-1, and 60 mL min-1, respectively. The variations of the above parameters can affect the system conductivity, the thickness and stability of the electric double layers, and/or the degree of concentration polarization, thereby influencing the desalination performance. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis identified the operating voltage as the dominant parameter with the most significant influence on the FCDI system. Subsequently, a long-term operation was carried out under single-pass mode. The results showed that the lab-scale FCDI system was able to constantly maintain the desalination efficiency of 1.0 g L-1 feedwater (NaCl) at 40-60 % for multiple operating cycles. Over 99.8 % of electrode material regeneration and desalination efficiency recovery was able to be obtained during a 60-h operation, demonstrating that the FCDI system showed strong stability and long-term operation potential.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tardive dyskinesia (TD), a side effect due to long-term use of antipsychotic medication, is associated with cognitive impairment. Several studies have found sex differences in cognitive impairment in schizophrenia patients, while whether there are sex differences in cognitive performance in schizophrenia patients with TD has not been reported. METHODS: A total of 496 schizophrenia inpatients and 362 healthy controls were recruited for this study. We used the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) to assess patients' psychopathological symptoms and the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) to assess the severity of TD. Cognitive function was measured in 313 of these inpatients and 310 of healthy controls using the Repeatable Battery for Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). RESULTS: Patients with schizophrenia performed worse in all cognitive domains than healthy controls(all p < 0.001). Compared to patients without TD, patients with TD had higher PANSS total, PANSS negative symptom subscale and AIMS scores (all p < 0.001), while RBANS total, visuospatial/constructional and attention subscale scores were significantly lower (all p < 0.05). In addition, the visuospatial/constructional and attention indices remained significantly lower in male patients with TD than those without TD (both p < 0.05), but these results were not observed in female patients. Moreover, visuospatial/constructional and attention indices were negatively correlated with total AIMS scores only in male patients (both p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that there may be sex differences in cognitive impairment in schizophrenia patients with comorbid TD, indicating that female gender may have a protective effect on cognitive impairment in schizophrenia patients caused by TD.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: The impact of gut microbiota on human health, autoimmunity, and disease occurrence has long been recognized since the advancement of metagenomic sequencing technology has enabled a new level of perspective on the human microbiome. Emerging findings also suggest the existence of a gut-eye axis, wherein gut dysbiosis may be a crucial factor affecting the onset and progression of multiple ocular diseases. Sjögren syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune disease mainly affecting the exocrine glands, primarily the lacrimal gland in the eye, resulting in severe dry eye. Although there are currently various treatments for environmental dry eye, the efficacy for SS-related autoimmune dry eye is limited, and new and more effective therapies still need to be explored. The latest studies have demonstrated that the gut microbiota plays a key role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune dry eye. This review describes the effect of gut microbiota on the ocular surface of autoimmune dry eye; introduces the presumable pathways forming the "gut dysbiosis-ocular surface-lacrimal gland axis"; discusses the advantages of restoring intestinal microecology to treat dry eye by fecal microbiota transplantation or probiotics, which are expected to provide perspectives into the correlation between the gut microbiome and dry eye; enhance our understanding of the pathogenesis in autoimmune dry eye; and be useful in the development of future interventions of dry eye by regulating the gut microbiota.

RESUMO

Tea polyphenols (TP) have various biological functions including anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory and bioengineered repair properties. However, TP exhibit poor stability and bioavailability in the gastrointestinal tract. Nanoencapsulation techniques can be used to protect TP and to uphold their original characteristics during processing, storage and digestion, improve their physiochemical properties and enhance their health promoting effects. Nano-embedded TP show higher antioxidant, antibacterial and anticancer properties than TP, allowing TP to play a better role in bioengineering restoration after embedding. In this review, recent advances in nanoencapsulation of TP with biopolymeric nanocarriers (polysaccharides and proteins), lipid-based nanocarriers and innovative developments in preparation strategies were mainly discussed. Additionally, the strengthening biological functions of stability and bioavailability, antioxidant, antibacterial, anticancer activities and bioengineering repair properties activities after the nano-embedding of TP have been considered. Finally, further studies could be conducted for exploring the application of nanoencapsulated systems in food for industrial applications.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: CREB, MYCY1 and NAT10 are involved in cancer cell migration. However, the relationship between these three proteins and their role in laryngeal cancer cell migration remains unknown. METHODS: Transient gene transfection was performed in laryngeal cancer cells. Bioinformatics analysis was used to predict the binding of CREB to MYCT1 promoter. Binding of CREB to the promoter of MYCT1 was monitored by luciferase reporter assay and chromatin immuno-precipitation method in vitro and in vivo, respectively. Real-time RT-PCR and Western bolt were applied to detect gene transcription and translation levels, respectively. Laryngeal cancer cell migration was assayed by transwell chamber experiment. RESULTS: CREB protein expression was significantly up-regulated in laryngeal cancer tissues and associated with cancer differentiation, tumor stage, and lymphatic metastasis. CREB inhibits MYCT1 expression by direct binding to its promoter. Meanwhile, MYCT1 has a negative impact on the NAT10 gene expression. Furthermore, CREB promotes NAT10 expression via down-regulating the MYCT1 gene expression. In addition, contrary to MYCT1, CREB and NAT10 enhanced laryngeal cancer cell migration. MYCT1 and NAT10 significantly rescued the effects of CREB and MYCT1 on Hep2 cell migration, respectively. CONCLUSION: CREB promotes laryngeal cancer cell migration via MYCT1/NAT10 axis, suggesting that CREB might be a potential prognostic marker in laryngeal cancer.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: LncRNA HOTAIR plays an important role in many cancer. Several studies have shown that some HOTAIR SNPs might be associated with tumor risk in case-control studies, but the results are inconsistent and inconclusive. Therefore, it is necessary to better evaluate association between the HOTAIR SNPs and the risk of cancer. RESULTS: rs920778, rs7958904 and rs874945 but not rs4759314 and rs1899663 loci were significantly related to cancer risk, among of which rs920778 and rs874945 increased and rs7958904 decreased cancer risk, respectively. Moreover, rs920778 is significantly susceptible in both Asian population and digestive cancer risks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected from PubMed, Embase and Web of Science. A total of 11 case-control studies were selected for the quantitative analysis. Software Stata (Version 12) was used to calculate Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to evaluate the strength of the associations. Subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias were also performed. Five HOTAIR SNPs were finally enrolled in the study. CONCLUSIONS: HOTAIR SNP rs920778, rs7958904 and rs874945 are susceptible to cancer risk. SNP rs920778 is also a useful risk factor in evaluation of Asian population and digestive cancer. In addition, the cancer risk SNP rs874945 is first reported in the meta-analysis.
