RESUMO

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death worldwide, and the functional status of the gut plays a key role in patients' prognosis. Recent publications have explored the gut association with stroke, but few articles have been published that specifically address a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the gut microbiota and its association with stroke. To address this gap, we used bibliometric methods to examine the landscape of research concerning the gut and stroke over approximately two decades, utilizing the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). On November 1, 2022, a search was conducted for English-language articles published between 2002 and 2022, with only including original articles. Visual and statistical analyses were performed using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Bibliometrix 4.1.0 Package. After screening relevant articles, the results revealed that the number of articles published in this field has progressively increased during the last two decades. In particular, the total number of publications rapidly increased year by year from 2014. Among them, China ranked first in the world with a total of 227 publications. Authorship analysis highlighted Wang Z as the most prolific author, with 18 publications and an H-index of 14, highlighting significant contributions to this field. Meanwhile, the Southern Medical University of China was identified as the most productive institution. Moreover, analysis of keywords revealed that 'cerebral ischemia', 'intestinal microbiota', 'gut microbiota', and 'trimethylamine N-oxide' were popular topics searched, and research on the relationship between stroke and the gut continues to be a research hotspot. In summary, this study presents an overview of the progress and emerging trends in research on the relationship between stroke and gut health over the past two decades, providing a valuable resource for researchers aiming to understand the current state of the field and identify potential directions for future studies.

PURPOSE: To assess and compare the visual acuity and refractive outcomes of topography-guided laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) based on the fitting-shape-based refractive compensated and Phorcides software strategies. METHODS: Consecutive patients who underwent topography-guided LASIK were included in this study. Through double-masked simple randomization, patients were assigned to the Zhang & Zheng Auto-compensate Refraction (ZZ AR) group (the fitting-shape-based refractive compensated strategy using the ZZ AR calculator was used) or the Phorcides group (the topography analysis algorithm in Phorcides software [Phorcides LLC] was used). Only one eye per patient with binocular correction was randomly enrolled. The preoperative and postoperative visual acuities and refraction were analyzed at the 6-month follow-up visit. RESULTS: The ZZ AR and Phorcides groups comprised 156 and 147 eyes, respectively. At the 6-month postoperative follow-up visit, the median (range) absolute residual cylindrical refraction was 0.35 (1.01) and 0.47 (1.63) diopters (D) for the ZZ AR and Phorcides groups, respectively (P < .001). The percentages of patients with residual cylindrical power within 0.25 D were 29.49% and 13.61% for the ZZ AR and Phorcides groups, respectively (P = .001). Based on the percentages of patients with residual cylindrical powers within 0.50 and 1.00 D, the ZZ AR group showed better outcomes (P = .02 and .01). The percentage of patients with visual acuity better than 20/16 was significantly higher for the ZZ AR group than for the Phorcides group (P = .03). CONCLUSIONS: The fitting-shape-based refractive compensated strategy for topography-guided LASIK procedures can better optimize the visual acuity and astigmatic refraction than the Phorcides software strategy. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation factors of complete clinical response in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) patients receiving conventional treatment. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with IIMs hospitalized in Peking University People's Hospital from January 2000 to June 2023 were included. The correlation factors of complete clinical response to conventional treatment were identified by analyzing the clinical characteristics, laboratory features, peripheral blood lymphocytes, immunological indicators, and therapeutic drugs. RESULTS: Among the 635 patients included, 518 patients finished the follow-up, with an average time of 36.8 months. The total complete clinical response rate of IIMs was 50.0% (259/518). The complete clinical response rate of dermatomyositis (DM), anti-synthetase syndrome (ASS) and immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) were 53.5%, 48.9% and 39.0%, respectively. Fever (P=0.002) and rapid progressive interstitial lung disease (RP-ILD) (P=0.014) were observed much more frequently in non-complete clinical response group than in complete clinical response group. The aspartate transaminase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), D-dimer, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reaction protein (CRP) and serum ferritin were significantly higher in non-complete clinical response group as compared with complete clinical response group. As for the treatment, the percentage of glucocorticoid received and intravenous immunoglobin (IVIG) were significantly higher in non-complete clinical response group than in complete clinical response group. Risk factor analysis showed that IMNM subtype (P=0.007), interstitial lung disease (ILD) (P=0.001), eleva-ted AST (P=0.012), elevated serum ferritin (P=0.016) and decreased count of CD4+T cells in peripheral blood (P=0.004) might be the risk factors for IIMs non-complete clinical response. CONCLUSION: The total complete clinical response rate of IIMs is low, especially for IMNM subtype. More effective intervention should be administered to patients with ILD, elevated AST, elevated serum ferritin or decreased count of CD4+T cells at disease onset.

AIMS: Mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes (MAMs) serve as a crucial bridge connecting the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria within cells. Vesicle-associated membrane protein-associated protein B (VAPB) and protein tyrosine phosphatase interacting protein 51 (PTPIP51) are responsible for the formation and stability of MAMs, which have been implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases. However, the role of MAMs in ischemic stroke (IS) remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the role of MAMs tethering protein VAPB-PTPIP51 in experimental cerebral ischemia. METHODS: We simulated cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) by using a mouse middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model. RESULTS: We observed a decrease in VAPB-PTPIP51 expression in the brain tissue. Our findings suggested compromised MAMs after MCAO, as a decreased mitochondria-ER contact (MERC) coverage and an increased distance were observed through the transmission electron microscope (TEM). Upon VAPB or PTPIP51 knockdown, the damage to MAMs was exacerbated, accompanied by excessive autophagy activation and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, resulting in an enlarged infarct area and exacerbated neurological deficits. Notably, we observed that this damage was concomitant with the inhibition of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway and was successfully mitigated by the treatment with the PI3K activator. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that the downregulation of VAPB-PTPIP51 expression after IS mediates structural damage to MAMs. This may exacerbate CIRI by inhibiting the PI3K pathway and activating autophagy, thus providing new therapeutic targets for IS.

Cell division cycle-associated (CDCA) gene family members are essential cell proliferation regulators and play critical roles in various cancers. However, the function of the CDCA family genes in gliomas remains unclear. This study aims to elucidate the role of CDCA family members in gliomas using in vitro and in vivo experiments and bioinformatic analyses. We included eight glioma cohorts in this study. An unsupervised clustering algorithm was used to identify novel CDCA gene family clusters. Then, we utilized multi-omics data to elucidate the prognostic disparities, biological functionalities, genomic alterations, and immune microenvironment among glioma patients. Subsequently, the scRNA-seq analysis and spatial transcriptomic sequencing analysis were carried out to explore the expression distribution of CDCA2 in glioma samples. In vivo and in vitro experiments were used to investigate the effects of CDCA2 on the viability, migration, and invasion of glioma cells. Finally, based on ten machine-learning algorithms, we constructed an artificial intelligence-driven CDCA gene family signature called the machine learning-based CDCA gene family score (MLCS). Our results suggested that patients with the higher expression levels of CDCA family genes had a worse prognosis, more activated RAS signaling pathways, and more activated immunosuppressive microenvironments. CDCA2 knockdown inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion of glioma cells. In addition, the MLCS had robust and favorable prognostic predictive ability and could predict the response to immunotherapy and chemotherapy drug sensitivity.

Purpose: To assess long term changes of the surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) and corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs) after 2.2 mm clear corneal incisions (CCIs) in femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and compare them between 2 types of CCIs: temporal and superior approach. Patients and Methods: Patients received the temporal CCIs (Group A) or the superior CCIs (Group B). Outcome measures included visual acuity, manifest refraction, corneal astigmatism, SIA, flattening effect, and corneal HOAs. Correlation between postoperative corneal HOA and SIA at each follow-up were analysed. Results: This study assessed data from 106 eyes, of which 64 in Group A and 42 in Group B. The two groups had similar postoperative visual acuity of distance, intermediate and near (all P > 0.05). SIA and corneal HOAs were significantly lower in Group A than Group B in the early postoperative period, while there was no significant difference in the late postoperative period. At 6 months after surgery, the arithmetic mean of SIA over corneal 4mm zone was 0.33 ± 0.19D for temporal incision, and 0.37 ± 0.25D for superior incision. For Group A, the correlations of HOAs and SIA persisted from 1 week to 6 months after surgery. For Group B, the changes in corneal HOAs were significantly related to the SIA at 1 week and 1 month postoperatively. Conclusion: This study suggested the consistency of increasing and recovering process of corneal HOAs and SIA after surgery. Compared to the superior incisions, temporal incisions might induce quicker corneal recovery and less change in SIA and corneal HOAs.

Radiation therapy (RT) not only can directly kill tumor cells by causing DNA double-strand break, but also exerts anti-tumor effects through modulating local and systemic immune responses. The immunomodulatory effects of RT are generally considered as a double-edged sword. On the one hand, RT effectively enhances the immunogenicity of tumor cells, triggers type I interferon response, induces immunogenic cell death to activate immune cell function, increases the release of proinflammatory factors, and reshapes the tumor immune microenvironment, thereby positively promoting anti-tumor immune responses. On the other hand, RT stimulates tumor cells to express immunosuppressive cytokines, upregulates the function of inhibitory immune cells, leads to lymphocytopenia and depletion of immune effector cells, and thus negatively suppresses immune responses. Nonetheless, it is notable that RT has promising abscopal effects and may achieve potent synergistic effects, especially when combined with immunotherapy in the daily clinical practice. This systematic review will provide a comprehensive profile of the latest research progress with respect to the immunomodulatory effects of RT, as well as the abscopal effect of radioimmunotherapy combinations, from the perspective of biological basis and clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Studies have proved that low albumin level is associated with increased mortality in most diseases, such as chronic kidney disease and hepatic cirrhosis. However, the relationship between albumin and all-cause death in heart failure patients in China is still unclear. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the association between albumin level and 28-day mortality in Chinese hospitalized patients with NYHA IV heart failure. METHODS: A total of 2008 Chinese patients were included. The correlation between serum albumin level and mortality was tested using a cox proportional hazards regression model. The smooth curve fitting was used to identify non-linear relationships between serum albumin and mortality. The Forest plot analysis was used to assess the association between albumin and 28-day mortality in different groups. RESULTS: Compared with patients with NYHA II-III, patients with NYHA IV had lower albumin level and higher mortality within 28 days. The albumin on admission was independently and inversely associated with the endpoint risk, which remained significant (hazard ratio: 0.80; 95 % confidence interval: 0.66 to 0.96; p = 0.0196) after multivariable adjustment. The smooth curve fitting showed with the increase of albumin, the mortality within 28 days would decrease. A subgroup analysis found that the inverse association between the albumin level and risk of the mortality was consistent across the subgroup stratified by possible influence factors. CONCLUSION: Serum albumin level is negatively associated with 28-day mortality in hospitalized heart failure patients within NYHA IV in China, which can be used as an independent predictor.

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are of great therapeutic value due to their role in maintaining the function of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs). MSCs derived from human pluripotent stem cells represent an ideal alternative because of their unlimited supply. However, the role of MSCs with neural crest origin derived from HPSCs on the maintenance of HSPCs has not been reported. METHODS: Flow cytometric analysis, RNA sequencing and differentiation ability were applied to detect the characteristics of stromal cells from 3D human brain organoids. Human umbilical cord blood CD34+ (UCB-CD34+) cells were cultured in different coculture conditions composed of stromal cells and umbilical cord MSCs (UC-MSCs) with or without a cytokine cocktail. The hematopoietic stroma capacity of stromal cells was tested in vitro with the LTC-IC assay and in vivo by cotransplantation of cord blood nucleated cells and stroma cells into immunodeficient mice. RNA and proteomic sequencing were used to detect the role of MSCs on HSPCs. RESULTS: The stromal cells, derived from both H1-hESCs and human induced pluripotent stem cells forebrain organoids, were capable of differentiating into the classical mesenchymal-derived cells (osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and adipocytes). These cells expressed MSC markers, thus named pluripotent stem cell-derived MSCs (pMSCs). The pMSCs showed neural crest origin with CD271 expression in the early stage. When human UCB-CD34+ HSPCs were cocultured on UC-MSCs or pMSCs, the latter resulted in robust expansion of UCB-CD34+ HSPCs in long-term culture and efficient maintenance of their transplantability. Comparison by RNA sequencing indicated that coculture of human UCB-CD34+ HSPCs with pMSCs provided an improved microenvironment for HSC maintenance. The pMSCs highly expressed the Wnt signaling inhibitors SFRP1 and SFRP2, indicating that they may help to modulate the cell cycle to promote the maintenance of UCB-CD34+ HSPCs by antagonizing Wnt activation. CONCLUSIONS: A novel method for harvesting MSCs with neural crest origin from 3D human brain organoids under serum-free culture conditions was reported. We demonstrate that the pMSCs support human UCB-HSPC expansion in vitro in a long-term culture and the maintenance of their transplantable ability. RNA and proteomic sequencing indicated that pMSCs provided an improved microenvironment for HSC maintenance via mechanisms involving cell-cell contact and secreted factors and suppression of Wnt signaling. This represents a novel method for large-scale production of MSCs of neural crest origin and provides a potential approach for development of human hematopoietic stromal cell therapy for treatment of dyshematopoiesis.

As a complementary and alternative therapy, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been playing a significant role in gastric cancer treatment. Data from individual systematic reviews have not been comprehensively summarized, and the relationship between certain interventions and outcomes are ill-defined. This study aimed to analyze the advantages of TCM interventions for gastric cancer by the method of evidence mapping. We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Scientific Journals Database, and Wanfang Database for systematic reviews of TCM treating gastric cancer up to December 31, 2023. We used Excel, Endnote 20, and Python software for the analysis of incorporated studies. We assessed the quality of included SRs by AMSTAR-2 and performed evidence mapping including 89 SRs, 1648 RCTs and 122,902 patients, identifying 47 types of interventions and 39 types of outcomes. From a visual overview, we displayed that most SRs reported beneficial effects in improving short- and long-term survival, myelosuppression, and immune function, even though the quality of evidence was generally low. The benefits of Brucea javanica Oil Emulsion Injection, ShenQiFuZheng Injection, XiaoAiPing, Astragalus-Containing TCM and Guben Xiaoji Therapy were found the most solid in corresponding aspects. Our findings suggest that although more rigorous clinical trials and SRs are needed to identify the precise effectiveness, integrating such evidence into clinical care of gastric cancer is expected to be beneficial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Secondary cell wall (SCW) thickening is a major cellular developmental stage determining wood structure and properties. Although the molecular regulation of cell wall deposition during tracheary element differentiation has been well established in primary growth systems, less is known about the gene regulatory processes involved in the multi-layered SCW thickening of mature trees. METHODS: Using third-generation [long-read single-molecule real-time (SMRT)] and second-generation [short-read sequencing by synthesis (SBS)] sequencing methods, we established a Pinus bungeana transcriptome resource with comprehensive functional and structural annotation for the first time. Using these approaches, we generated high spatial resolution datasets for the vascular cambium, xylem expansion regions, early SCW thickening, late SCW thickening and mature xylem tissues of 71-year-old Pinus bungeana trees. KEY RESULTS: A total of 79 390 non-redundant transcripts, 31 808 long non-coding RNAs and 5147 transcription factors were annotated and quantified in different xylem tissues at all growth and differentiation stages. Furthermore, using this high spatial resolution dataset, we established a comprehensive transcriptomic profile and found that members of the NAC, WRKY, SUS, CESA and LAC gene families are major players in early SCW formation in tracheids, whereas members of the MYB and LBD transcription factor families are highly expressed during late SCW thickening. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide new molecular insights into the regulation of multi-layered SCW thickening in conifers. The high spatial resolution datasets provided can serve as important gene resources for improving softwoods.

The combined application of metasurface and terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy techniques has received considerable attention in the fields of sensing and detection. However, to detect trace samples, the THz wave must still be enhanced locally using certain methods to improve the detection sensitivity. In this study, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a fano resonance metasurface-based silver nanoparticles (FaMs-AgNPs) sensor. AgNPs can enhance the sensitivity of the sensor by generating charge accumulation and inducing localized electric field enhancement through the tip effect, thereby enhancing the interaction between the THz waves and analytes. We investigated the effects of four different contents of AgNPs, 10 µl, 20 µl, 30 µl and 40 µl, on the detection of acetamiprid. At 30 µl of AgNPs, the amplitude change of the FaMs-AgNPs sensor was more pronounced and the sensitivity was higher, which could detect acetamiprid solutions as low as 100 pg/ml. The FaMs-AgNPs sensor has the advantages of a simple structure, easy processing, and excellent sensing performance, and has a great potential application value in the field of THz trace detection and other fields.

The study aimed to investigate the predictive value of clinical characteristics, major computed tomography angiography (CTA) indexes of carotid AS (carotid lumen stenosis and plaque burden), and inflammatory pericarotid adipose tissue for acute stroke risk in patients with a moderate or higher degree of carotid stenosis. In all, 119 patients with unilateral carotid stenosis who underwent head and neck computed tomography angiography were included and assigned to the stroke group or non-stroke group according to magnetic resonance imaging. Pericarotid adipose tissue attenuation value, net enhancement value in the base phase and the enhancement phase, and atherosclerotic features (plaque burden and lumen stenosis) were recorded. Multivariate logistic regression analysis and the operating characteristic curve (ROC) were performed to establish a predictive model for the presence of acute ischemic stroke. ROC analysis showed that pericarotid adipose tissue attenuation value and lumen stenosis were predictive factors for stroke. The AUC of pericarotid adipose tissue attenuation (PCAT) attenuation, lumen stenosis, the novel prediction model independently constructed based on PCAT attenuation, and lumen stenosis resulted in 0.838 (95% CI 0.759-0.899), 0.700 (95% CI 0.826-0.944), and 0.942 (95% CI 0.884-0.977), respectively. The model had a sensitivity and specificity of 0.909 and 0.893, respectively, when the cutoff value was 0.388. We found that the risk model combining pericarotid adipose tissue attenuation value and lumen stenosis has significant predictive values for the presence of symptomatic stroke among patients with a moderate or higher degree of carotid stenosis.

RESUMO

To evaluate the impact of copublication on hypertension-related clinical practice guidelines' citation, we searched the Web of Science Core Collection and guide.medlive.cn until 31 December 2017 using the terms "hypertension" and "guideline". The copublished group was matched with the noncopublished group at a 1:2 ratio. Primary outcomes were total citations and citations within the first five years after publication. Secondary outcomes included the adjusted impact factor ratio (excluding copublished guidelines) to the actual impact factor of the journal. Altmetric scores were compared using Altmetric explorer data. 21 copublished and 42 noncopublished guidelines were included. The copublished group had higher median current total citations [387.0 (90.0, 1806.0) vs 70.5 (23.25, 158.25)], and higher median citations at one, two, three, four, and five years [7.0 (0.5, 58.5) vs 1.0 (0.0, 5.5), 33.0 (14.0, 142.0) vs 5.5 (1.75, 26.25), 46.0 (24.5, 216.0) vs 10.5 (3, 25.75), 50.0 (19.0, 229.0) vs 9.0 (3.0, 19.0), 52.0 (13.5, 147.0) vs 7.0 (2.0, 20.0), all p < 0.05]. The adjusted IF analysis showed that if they had not copublished the guidelines, 10 of 24 and 11 of 24 journals would have had a lower IF in the first and second years. Median altmetric scores were significantly higher for copublished guidelines [38.5 (9.5, 90.5) vs 3.5 (1.0, 9.0)] (p < 0.05). Copublication is associated with a higher citation frequency of hypertension guidelines and may increase the journal IF. Positive impacts extend beyond academia, benefiting society through broader guideline application and dissemination. This facilitates broader application of guidelines and promotes their dissemination. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to demonstrate how copublication promotes the dissemination of hypertension guidelines.

CONTEXT: Ketamine is a well-characterized anesthetic agent, and subanesthetic ketamine possesses analgesic effects in both acute and chronic pain. OBJECTIVES: A systematic review was performed to ascertain the efficacy and safety of ketamine in treating pain for cancer patients. METHODS: Eight databases were searched from the inception to March 20th, 2023 to obtain randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on ketamine for treating pain in cancer patients. Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias of included studies; then, meta-analysis was performed by using Revman 5.3 software and Stata 14.0 software. RESULTS: Thirty-five studies were included, involving 2279 patients with cancer pain. The results of meta-analysis showed that ketamine could significantly reduce pain intensity. Subgroup analysis revealed that, when compared with control group, ketamine decreased markedly visual analogue scale (VAS) scores in two days after the end of treatment with ketamine, and ketamine administrated by patient controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) was effective. Meanwhile, ketamine could significantly reduce the number of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) compressions within 24 hours and morphine dosage. Ketamine could not decrease Ramsay sedation score. Additionally, the adverse events significantly decreased in the ketamine group, including nausea and vomiting, constipation, pruritus, lethargy, uroschesis, hallucination, and respiratory depression. In addition, compared with the control group, ketamine could reduce Hamilton depression scale (HAMD) score and relieve depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION: Ketamine may be used as an effective therapy to relieve cancer pain. However, more rigorously designed RCTs with larger sample sizes are required to verify the above conclusions.

AIMS: Cell death, except for cuproptosis, in gliomas has been extensively studied, providing novel targets for immunotherapy by reshaping the tumor immune microenvironment through multiple mechanisms. This study aimed to explore the effect of cuproptosis on the immune microenvironment and its predictive power in prognosis and immunotherapy response. METHODS: Eight glioma cohorts were included in this study. We employed the unsupervised clustering algorithm to identify novel cuproptosis clusters and described their immune microenvironmental characteristics, mutation landscape, and altered signaling pathways. We verified the correlation among FDX1, SLC31A1, and macrophage infiltration in 56 glioma tissues. Next, based on multicenter cohorts and 10 machine learning algorithms, we constructed an artificial intelligence-driven cuproptosis-related signature named CuproScore. RESULTS: Our findings suggested that glioma patients with high levels of cuproptosis had a worse prognosis owing to immunosuppression caused by unique immune escape mechanisms. Meanwhile, we experimentally validated the positive association between cuproptosis and macrophages and its tumor-promoting mechanism in vitro. Furthermore, our CuproScore exhibited powerful and robust prognostic predictive ability. It was also capable of predicting response to immunotherapy and chemotherapy drug sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS: Cuproptosis facilitates immune activation but promotes immune escape. The CuproScore could predict prognosis and immunotherapy response in gliomas.

AIMS: The crosstalk between ferroptosis and neuroinflammation considerably impacts the pathogenesis of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI). Neutral polysaccharide from Gastrodia elata (NPGE) has shown significant effects against oxidative stress and inflammation. This study investigated the potential effects of NPGE on CIRI neuropathology. METHODS: The effects of NPGE were studied in a mouse model of ischemic stroke (IS) and in oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R)-induced HT22 cells. RESULTS: NPGE treatment decreased neurological deficits, reduced infarct volume, and alleviated cerebral edema in IS mice, and promoted the survival of OGD/R-induced HT22 cells. Mechanistically, NPGE treatment alleviated neuronal ferroptosis by upregulating GPX4 levels, lowering reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA), and Fe2+ excessive hoarding, and meliorating GSH levels and SOD activity. Additionally, it inhibited neuroinflammation by down-regulating the level of IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α, NLRP3, and HMGB1. Meanwhile, NPGE treatment alleviated ferroptosis and inflammation in erastin-stimulated HT22 cells. Furthermore, NPGE up-regulated the expression of NRF2 and HO-1 and promoted the translocation of NRF2 into the nucleus. Using the NRF2 inhibitor brusatol, we verified that NRF2/HO-1 signaling mediated the anti-ferroptotic and anti-inflammatory properties of NPGE. CONCLUSION: Collectively, our results demonstrate the protective effects of NPGE and highlight its therapeutic potential as a drug component for CIRI treatment.

Inorganic nanoparticulate biomaterials, such as calcium phosphate and bioglass particles, with chemical compositions similar to that of the inorganic component of natural bone, and hence having excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity, are widely used for the fabrication of synthetic bone graft substitutes. Growing evidence suggests that structurally anisotropic, or 1D inorganic micro-/nanobiomaterials are superior to inorganic nanoparticulate biomaterials in the context of mechanical reinforcement and construction of self-supporting 3D network structures. Therefore, in the past decades, efforts have been devoted to developing advanced synthetic scaffolds for bone regeneration using 1D micro-/nanobiomaterials as building blocks. These scaffolds feature extraordinary physical and biological properties, such as enhanced mechanical properties, super elasticity, multiscale hierarchical architecture, extracellular matrix-like fibrous microstructure, and desirable biocompatibility and bioactivity, etc. In this review, an overview of recent progress in the development of advanced scaffolds for bone regeneration is provided based on 1D inorganic micro-/nanobiomaterials with a focus on their structural design, mechanical properties, and bioactivity. The promising perspectives for future research directions are also highlighted.

The concept of a quasi-bound state in a continuum (QBIC) has garnered significant attention in various fields such as sensing, communication, and optical switching. Within metasurfaces, QBICs offer a reliable platform that enables sensing capabilities through potent interactions between local electric fields and matter. Herein, a novel terahertz (THz) biosensor based on the integration of QBIC with graphene is reported, which enables multidimensional detection. The proposed biosensor is distinctive because of its ability to discern concentrations of ethanol and N-methylpyrrolidone in a wide range from 100% to 0%, by monitoring the changes in the resonance intensity and maximum wavelet coefficient. This approach demonstrates an excellent linear fit, which ensures robust quantitative analysis. The remarkable sensitivity of our biosensor enables it to detect minute changes in low-concentration solutions, with the lowest detection concentration value (LDCV) of 0.21 pg mL-1 . 2D wavelet coefficient intensity cards are effectively constructed through continuous wavelet transforms, which presents a more accurate approach for determining the concentration of the solution. Ultimately, the novel sensing platform offers a host of advantages, including heightened sensitivity and reusability. This pioneering approach establishes a new avenue for liquid-based terahertz biosensing.

PURPOSE: Perivascular epicardial fat stranding detected in the coronary computed tomography (CT) angiography is associated with culprit lesions and provides helpful information on the risk of acute coronary syndrome. This study aimed to evaluate the potential clinical significance of pericarotid fat stranding (PCFS) and investigate the association between PCFS and short-term prognosis in acute stroke using head and neck CT angiography (CTA). METHODS: This study included 80 patients (mean age, 69.69 ± 11.03; 58 men) who underwent both head and neck CTA and magnetic resonance imaging within a 1-week period. Baseline characteristics, pericarotid adipose tissue attenuation, plaque characteristics, ischemic penumbra, infarct core volume, infarct core growth rate (CGR), and the grade of collateral status were recorded and compared between a PCFS group and a non-PCFS group. Data were compared using the 2-sample t test, Mann-Whitney U test, Fisher exact test, and Spearman rank correlation analysis. RESULTS: We found that patients with PCFS had a significantly higher pericarotid adipose tissue density than patients without PCFS (-55.75 ± 5.53 vs -65.82 ± 9.65, P < 0.001). Patients with PCFS showed a larger infarct core volume (166.43 ± 73.07 vs 91.43 ± 55.03, P = 0.001) and faster CGR (39.57 ± 12.01 vs 19.83 ± 32.77; P < 0.001), and the frequency of adverse prognosis was more significant than in control participants (83.33% vs 19.11%). CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with PCFS showed higher CGR, which was substantially related to worse outcomes in patients with acute stroke with ipsilateral carotid atherosclerosis. Recognition of PCFS may help predict stroke prognosis and allow doctors to take early action to improve patient prognosis.
