RESUMO

Bioassay-guided purification of the xanthine oxidase (XOD) inhibitory extract of the roots of Ampelopsis japonica resulted in the isolation of two new triterpenoids (1-2), designated Ampejaponoside A and B, along with sixteen known compounds (3-18). The structures of Ampejaposide A and B were elucidated by comprehensive analysis of spectroscopic data with the structures of the known compounds 3-18 confirmed by comparison the spectral data with corresponding values reported in literatures. All the isolates were evaluated for their XOD inhibitory activity in vitro. As a result, compounds 2, 8, and 14-16 displayed significant XOD inhibitory effect, particularly 16 being the most potent with an IC50 value of 0.21 µM, superior to positive substance allopurinol (IC50 1.95 µM). Molecular docking uncovered a unique interaction mode of 16 with the active site of XOD. The current study showed that the triterpenoids and polyphenols from A. japonica could serve as new lead compounds with the potential to speed up the development of novel XOD inhibitors with clinical potential to treat hyperuricaemia and gout.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To map supraclavicular fossa-involved lymph nodes (SCF-LNs) in patients with nonmetastatic breast cancer, evaluate the coverage of widely adopted atlases, and propose modified borders for individualized regional irradiation. METHODS AND MATERIALS: M0 patients with biopsy-proven SCF-LNs who were SCF treatment-naïve were included. The SCF was spatially divided into subregions, with each node mapped on the original images. The geographic misses after the borders of multiple atlases were evaluated and factors affecting SCF-LNs' spread pattern were analyzed. RESULTS: From 1998 to 2022, 209 patients with 1242 SCF-LNs were eligible. Patients had a median of 4 nodes. At least 537 nodes (43.2%) in 147 patients (70.3%) were lateral to the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM), and 403 nodes (32.4%) in 127 patients (60.8%) were dorsal to the anterior scalene muscle (ASM). In the 88 patients with ≤3 SCF-LNs, at least 66 nodes (39.1%) in 40 patients (45.5%) were lateral to the SCM, and 34 nodes (20.1%) in 29 patients (33.0%) were dorsal to the ASM. These nodes were not covered by the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) atlas and partly within the Radiotherapy Comparative Effectiveness atlas. One hundred four patients (49.8%) had 432 SCF-LNs (34.8%) beyond the upper border of the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) atlas. In multivariate regression, nodal sizes were associated with wider spread in the primary group. Being triple-negative (TN) subtype was associated with less spread in the recurrent group. Situation-based clinical target volumes (CTVs) were theorized, in which for a sequential spread, the posterior border could be the posterior scalene muscle or even be more constringent; otherwise, it should touch the anterior trapezius surface. CONCLUSIONS: SCF-LNs tend to spread laterally and dorsally beyond the RTOG borders, even in M0 stages with ≤3 SCF-LNs. The ESTRO upper border does not guarantee coverage with multiple SCF-LNs. Nodal burden and non-TN types are predictive of wider dissemination. A situation-based CTV is possibly feasible. Deciphering the SCF-LN spread route is needed.

RESUMO

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the serum uric acid levels and the prevalence of hyperuricemia among Chinese adults in 2015 and compare the differences between urban and rural areas, as well as the differences between eastern, central, and western regions. Methods: A national representative sample of 180,208 participants were included using a stratified, multistage, and random sampling method. The demographic characteristics and blood samples were collected to determine the serum uric acid levels and prevalence of hyperuricemia among subgroups using complicated sampling weight. A t-test or ANOVA was used for normally-distributed data. The Kruskal-Wallis rank test was used for skewed-distributed data. The Mantel-Haenszel chi-square test was used to compare the difference in categorical variables. Results: The weighted mean uric acid level in Chinese adults was 310.4 µmol/L (317.5 µmol/L in urban areas and 302.9 µmol/L in rural areas). The weighted average values of uric acid in eastern, central, and western China were 315.5 µmol/L, 303.5 µmol/L, and 310.4 µmol/L, respectively. The weighted prevalence of hyperuricemia in Chinese adults was 14.6%, with a prevalence of 16.5% in urban areas and 12.5% in rural areas. The weighted prevalence of hyperuricemia in eastern, central, and western China was 16.0%, 12.5%, and 14.8%, respectively. Conclusion: The uric acid level in Chinese adults is relatively high. Effective actions are warranted to improve this metabolic abnormality.

RESUMO

Chronic hepatitis B virus infection has become a major public health issue worldwide, which can lead to liver inflammation, fibrosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. According to the inflammation activity, liver tissues can be divided into 5 grades (G0-G4). However, the mechanism of the development of liver inflammation remains unclear. In our study, expression profiling by microarray and bioinformatics technology was used to systemically identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between low grades (G0-G1) and high (G2-G4) grades of liver inflammation. Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis, and protein-protein interaction network construction were performed for further identification of the key functions, pathways, and hub genes that might play important roles in the inflammation development. A total of 1982 DEGs were identified, consisting of 1220 downregulated genes and 762 upregulated genes. GO analysis revealed the DEGs were mainly enriched in GO terms that related to neutrophil activation and degranulation. MAPK1, ITGA2, CDK2, TGFB1, CDKN2A, MTOR, IL6, PCNA, OAS2, and EP300 were hub genes that had the highest centricity and might be potential markers for inflammation development. This study identified the differentially expressed genes between different grades of inflammation, which would enlighten the study that focuses on the mechanism of liver inflammation development.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The prognosis of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) varies in patients receiving transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE). In this study, we aimed to assess the prognostic value of serum apolipoprotein B (ApoB)/apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-I) in this group of patients. METHODS: The serum lipid levels of HCC patients undergoing TACE were obtained from routine preoperative blood lipid examination. A propensity score-matched (PSM) analysis was used to eliminate the imbalance of baseline characteristics of the high and low ApoB/ApoA-I groups. Then, univariate and multivariate analysis were conducted to evaluate the prognostic value of ApoB/ApoA-I. RESULTS: In 455 HCC patients treated with TACE, ApoB/ApoA-I was positively correlated with AFP, T stage, distant metastasis, and TNM stage (p < 0.05). Patients with high ApoB/ApoA-I had a significantly shorter overall survival (OS) than those with low ApoB/ApoA-I (median OS, 21.7 vs. 39.6 months, p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis indicated that ApoB/ApoA-I was an independent prognostic index for OS (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.42, p = 0.008). After baseline characteristics were balanced, 288 patients were included in the PSM cohort. In this cohort, high ApoB/ApoA-I still predicted inferior OS in both univariate analysis (median OS, 27.6 vs. 39.3 months, p = 0.002) and multivariate analysis (HR = 1.58, p = 0.006). CONCLUSION: Serum ApoB/ApoA-I is a useful biomarker in predicting aggressive clinicopathological characteristics and poor prognosis in HCC patients treated with TACE.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Nutrition is closely related to the health of the elderly population. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive picture of the nutrition status of elderly Chinese and its related dietary, geographical, and socioeconomic factors. METHODS: A total of 13,987 ≥ 60-year-old persons from the 2010-2013 Chinese National Nutrition and Health Survey were included to evaluate various aspects of malnutrition, including underweight, overweight or obesity, and micronutrient inadequacy. RESULTS: Overall, the prevalence of obesity, overweight, and underweight was 12.4%, 34.8%, and 5.7%, respectively, with disparities both geographically and socioeconomically. The prevalence of underweight was higher among the older old (≥ 75 years), rural residents and those with low income, with low education status, and residing in undeveloped West areas. More than 75% of the elderly do not meet the Dietary Reference Intakes for vitamins A, B 1, B 2, and E, folate, calcium, selenium, potassium, biotin, and choline, with the prevalence of inadequate intake increasing with age for most nutrients. At the population level, the mean intakes of numerous food groups did not meet the recommendations by the Chinese Dietary Guideline. CONCLUSIONS: Obesity epidemic, inadequacy of micronutrient intake, and high prevalence of underweight and anemia in susceptible older people are the major nutrition challenges for the rapidly aging population in China.

RESUMO

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate serum zinc status of pregnant women in the China Adult Chronic Disease and Nutrition Surveillance (CACDNS) in 2015-2016. Methods: A total of 7147 apparently healthy pregnant women were randomly selected in 302 national monitoring sites. Information on age, race, residence region, education, pregnancy, and family income per annum was collected, and the concentration of serum zinc was determined. The evaluation of serum zinc status was further performed according to the recommendations by the International Zinc Nutrition Consultative Group (IZiNCG). Results: The median concentration of serum zinc was 858.9 µg/L with an interquartile range (IQR) of 712.9 µg/L and 1048.9 µg/L, while the overall prevalence of zinc deficiency was 3.5% with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 3.0% and 3.9%. Serum zinc status of pregnant women changed greatly in the different categories, particular in pregnancy and family income per annum (p < 0.05), but no significant difference was observed in the prevalence of zinc deficiency (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The lower prevalence of zinc deficiency generally indicated a better zinc status for pregnant women in the CACDNS in 2015-2016. However, a well-designed evaluation system of zinc status for pregnant women should be continually optimized and improved by inducing more parameters such as biochemical, dietary, or functional indicators.

RESUMO

In this era of immune checkpoint inhibitors, inflammatory adverse events of anti-cancer therapies continue to pose a major challenge. Glucocorticoids, as the mainstay, were limited by serious side effects. Glucocorticoids induce myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), and lactoferrin-induced polymorphonuclear MDSCs (PMN-MDSCs) were shown to relieve inflammatory conditions. Combined treatment with dexamethasone (DXM) and lactoferrin increased the generation of PMN-MDSCs in vitro (DXM/lactoferrin PMN-MDSCs) compared to DXM or lactoferrin treatment alone. DXM/lactoferrin PMN-MDSCs were distinct from tumor PMN-MDSCs in vivo with regard to gene expression profiles. DXM upregulated the myeloid cell response to lactoferrin by inducing the lactoferrin receptor Lrp1. DXM/lactoferrin PMN-MDSCs presented anti-bacterial capability, increased PGE2 production, increased survival capability, and decreased tumor tissue homing. Transfer of DXM/lactoferrin PMN-MDSCs relieved cisplatin-induced acute kidney failure, bleomycin-induced interstitial pneumonia, and allergic pneumonitis effectively without promoting tumor development. Our study shows that DXM/lactoferrin PMN-MDSCs are a promising cell therapy for inflammatory adverse events of anti-cancer therapies.

RESUMO

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) in plasmonic nanostructures has been investigated for decades due to their wide applications in photonic circuit, quantum optics and biosensing. Development of large-scale, uniform, and efficient plasmonic nanostructure system with tunable modes is desirable for their feasible utilizations. Herein, we design an efficient inch-scale SHG source by a solution-processed method instead of traditional high-cost processes. By assembling the gold nanoparticles with the porous anodic alumina templates, multiresonance in both visible and near-infrared regions can be achieved in hexagonal plasmonic nanostructure arrays, which provide strong electric field enhancement at the gap region. Polarization-independence SHG radiation has been realized owing to the in-plane isotropic characteristic of assembled unit. The tilt-angle dependent and angle-resolved measurement showed that wide-angle nonlinear response is achieved in our device because of the gap geometry of ball-in-bowl nanostructure with nonlinear emission electric dipoles distributed on the concave surface, which makes it competitive in practical applications. Our progress not only makes it possible to produce uniform inch-scale nonlinear arrays through low-cost solution process; and also advances the understanding of the SHG radiation in plasmonic nanostructures.

RESUMO

Objective: To compare the efficacy and safety of genotype-guided antiplatelet strategy and standard treatment in patient with coronary artery disease (CAD) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods: Relevant studies published in Medline, Embase, CoChrane Library were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) until August 2020. Studies were screened by selection criteria, quality assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool. Data were extracted from the included studies and statistically analyzed by RevMan 5.3 software. Results: Four RCTs involving 4,604 patients were included in this meta-analysis. Compared with the standard treatment group, the pooled results showed that genotype-guided group associated with lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE, OR=0.52, 95%CI:0.35-0.78, P =0.001), any bleeding (OR=0.77, 95%CI: 0.62-0.95, P =0.02) and myocardial infarction (MI, OR=0.48, 95%CI:0.33-0.68, P <0.0001). There was no significant difference in death of any cause (OR=0.53, 95%CI: 0.18-1.54, P =0.25), cardiovascular death (OR=0.74, 95%CI:0.48-1.14, P =0.17), target vessel revascularization (OR=0.66, 95%CI:0.39-1.12, P =0.12) and major bleeding events (OR=0.86, 95%CI: 0.58-1.28, P =0.47). Conclusion: Genotype guided antiplatelet therapy could reduce the risk of MACE, MI and any bleeding events in patients with CAD undergone PCI, compared with standard treatment. Therefore, the findings support that implementation of genotype testing to tailor antiplatelet therapy after PCI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Undernutrition during early life may increase the risk of chronic diseases in adulthood, including dyslipidemia. Few investigations have confirmed the relationship between early life undernutrition and dyslipidemia in adulthood in China. OBJECTIVES: To assess the relationship between the Great Chinese Famine exposure during prenatal period or early postnatal period and lipid profiles in adulthood. DESIGN: Data were extracted from the China Nutrition and Health Survey (CNHS) in 2010-2012, which included the participants who experienced the Great Chinese Famine during early life. RESULTS: Participants who experienced the Great Chinese Famine in early postnatal period had a significantly higher prevalence of elevated total cholesterol (TC) (odds ratio: 1.60; 95% CI: 1.27, 2.02) than unexposed participants. Female (odds ratio: 1.71; 95% CI: 1.27, 2.31) were high risk than male (odds ratio: 1.46; 95% CI: 1.01, 2.11) and physical inactivity group (odds ratio: 1.65; 95% CI: 1.18, 2.29) were high risk than adequate physical activity group (odds ratio: 1.58; 95% CI: 1.21, 2.07). Similar effect of famine exposure on elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was observed, except that no significant difference was found between adequate physical activity group and physical inactivity group. Participants who experienced the Great Chinese Famine in prenatal period had a significantly higher prevalence of lowed high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (odds ratio: 1.19; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.37) than unexposed. Female were more likely to have lower HDL-C (odds ratio: 1.44; 95% CI: 1.18, 1.74), but not found in male. Participants with physical inactivity were more likely to have lower HDL-C (odds ratio: 1.28; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.61), but not found in adequate physical activity group. CONCLUSIONS: People who experienced the Great Chinese Famine during early life, especially in females and people physical inactivity, would impair of lipid profiles in later life. Healthy lifestyle like adequate physical activity may partially alleviate the adverse effects.

RESUMO

Background: Lymphocytes were reported to play a significant part in host anticancer immune responses and influence tumour prognosis. Few studies have focused on the prognostic values of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to lymphocyte ratio (ALRI), aspartate aminotransferase to platelet count ratio index (APRI) and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with palliative treatments. Methods: Five hundred and ninety-eight HCC patients treated with palliative therapies were retrospectively analysed. We randomly assigned patients into the training cohort (429 patients) and the validation cohort I (169 patients). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to identify the best cut-off values for the ALRI, APRI and SII in the training cohort and the values were further validated in the validation cohort I. Correlations between ALRI and other clinicopathological factors were also analysed. A prognostic nomogram including ALRI was established. We validated the prognostic value of the ALRI, SII and APRI with two independent cohorts, the validation cohort II of 82 HCC patients treated with TACE and the validation cohort III of 150 HCC patients treated with curative resection. In the training cohort and all the validation cohorts, univariate analyses by the method of Kaplan-Meier and multivariate analysis by Cox proportional hazards regression model were carried out to identify the independent prognostic factors. Results: The threshold values of ALRI, APRI and SII were 86.3, 1.37 and 376.4 respectively identified by ROC curve analysis in the training cohort. Correlation analysis showed that ALRI>86.3 was greatly associated with higher rates of Child-Pugh B&C, portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT) and ascites (P < 0.05). Correspondingly, ALRI level of HCC patients with Child-Pugh B&C, PVTT and ascites was evidently higher than that of HCC patients with Child-Pugh A, without PVTT and without ascites (P < 0.001). In the training cohort and the validation cohort I, II, III, the OS of patients with ALRI >86.3 was obviously shorter than patients with ALRI ≤86.3 (P <0.001). We identified ALRI as an independent prognostic factor by univariate and multivariate analyses both in training Cohort (HR=1.481, P=0.004), validation cohort I (HR=1.511, P=0.032), validation cohort II (HR=3.166, P=0.005) and validation cohort III (HR=3.921, P=0.010). The SII was identified as an independent prognostic factor in training cohort (HR=1.356, P=0.020) and the validation cohort II (HR=2.678, P=0.002). The prognostic nomogram including ALRI was the best in predicting 3-month, 6-month, 1-year, 2-year survival And OS among TNM, ALRI, ALRI-TNM and nomogram. Conclusions: The ALRI was a novel independent prognostic index for the HCC patients treated with palliative treatments.

RESUMO

In attempts to delay tumor progression after surgery or minimally invasive local treatments, multidisciplinary strategies have been broadly studied in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The objective of this present study was to evaluate the efficacy of autologous transplantations of cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells as an adjuvant therapy for patients with HCC. A total of 264 patients with HCC were enrolled in this retrospective study. Of these patients, 165 received either CIK cell therapy alone or as adjuvant therapy to surgery, transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE), or TACE-based comprehensive treatments (CT). The remaining 99 patients received only surgery or TACE. Kaplan-Meier analysis and the Chi-squared test were used to analyze the overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and clinical characteristics of the patients in the different treatment subgroups. Kaplan-Meier analysis suggested that patients in the Surgery+CIK group had a significantly improved OS compared with those in the other three groups (P < 0.001). Furthermore, patients who developed a fever after the CIK cell treatments manifested a likely better OS (P = 0.028). Subgroup analysis indicated that patients in the Surgery+CIK group likely had an improved PFS but a similar OS compared with the patients in the Surgery-alone group (P = 0.055 for PFS, and P = 0.746 for OS). Further subgroup analysis showed that the OS in both the TACE+CIK and CT+CIK groups was prolonged significantly compared with that in the TACE-alone group (P = 0.015 and P = 0.018, respectively). However, similar OS was observed between the TACE+CIK and CT+CIK groups (P = 0.686). Autologous transplantation of CIK cells as an adjuvant therapy was associated with better survival for patients with HCC, especially for those who had also undergone TACE. A fever reaction might be a potential event for assessing the curative effect of the CIK treatment.

RESUMO

Undernutrition during early life may lead to obesity in adulthood. This study was conducted to examine the relationship between famine exposure during early life and the risk of abdominal obesity in adulthood. A total of 18,984 and 16,594 adults were surveyed in 2002 and 2010-2012 in two nationally representative cross-sectional surveys, namely China Nutrition and Health Survey, respectively. The risk of abdominal obesity was evaluated for participants born during 1956-1961 and compared with that of participants born during 1962-1964. The overall prevalence of abdominal obesity in adulthood showed a positive association with famine exposure during early life. The odds ratios of famine exposure were 1.31 (1.19-1.44) and 1.28 (1.17-1.40) in 2002 during fetal life and infancy and 1.09 (1.00-1.19) in 2012 during fetal life, respectively. The relationships between famine exposure and abdominal obesity across the famine exposure groups were distinct among females and those who lived in urban areas and were physical inactive (p < 0.05). Exposure to famine during early life was associated with increased risks of abdominal obesity in adulthood, which was partially alleviated by healthy lifestyle factors (e.g., physical activity).

RESUMO

Four novel benzophenone derivatives, cytosporins A-D (1-4), hemiterpene-conjugated phenolics with an unprecedented benzo[b][1,5]dioxocane skeleton, were isolated from Cytospora rhizophorae A761. The structures of the new compounds were fully characterized on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis. The deduced structure represents the first example of natural meroterpenoids which bear a benzo[b][1,5]dioxocane framework embodying hemiterpene and benzophenone moieties. Moreover, compounds 1-4 were evaluated for in vitro antimicrobial activity.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The leaves of Rhodomyrtus tomentosa are traditionally used in the treatment of infectious diseases such as wound infections in Chinese traditional medicine. The mechanisms of the activity of rhodomyrtosone B (RDSB), a natural acylphloroglucinol isolated from the leaves of Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, are still not understood. We provided a detailed investigation of the antibacterial action of RDSB against bacteria in vitro and in vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The antibacterial activity of RDSB was tested by the microdilution method against a panel of bacteria, and a time-killing assay was carried out according to CLSI guidelines. The cytotoxic potential of RDSB was evaluated against mammalian cells, and its haemolytic activity towards rabbit red blood cells (RBCs) was assessed. The mode of action of RDSB was investigated by targeting bacterial membranes, and its resistance was evaluated using a sequential passaging method. The antibacterial activities in vivo were assessed against MRSA in a mouse skin infection mode. RESULTS: RDSB exhibited distinct antibacterial activities against selected Gram-positive pathogens responsible for serious infections, even including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.62-1.25 µg/mL and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) with an MIC of 2.5 µg/mL. RDSB displayed much more rapid bactericidal activity against MRSA than that of vancomycin. The membrane-targeting experiments revealed that RDSB exhibited significant antibacterial activity with the perturbation of bacterial membrane potential and an increase in membrane permeability. In particular, RDSB had weak cytotoxicity to mammalian cells (IC50 >14 µg/mL) and has advantageous specificity against selected Gram-positive bacterial membranes rather than RBCs. Notably, RDSB displayed in vitro antibacterial activities against MRSA without drug-resistance and profoundly attenuated the skin ulcer formation in a murine model of MRSA infection under a single dose of 40 µg RDSB per mouse. CONCLUSION: RDSB has profound antibacterial activity against drug-resistant bacteria (MRSA and VRE) and low cytotoxicity. It is bactericidal in nature, and an increase in membrane permeability resulting from membrane perturbation is one of its modes of action. RDSB represents a promising natural antibiotic to combat drug-resistant (MRSA and VRE) infections.

RESUMO

Childhood obesity is associated with both near- and longer-term health implications. Few studies have been conducted to explore the associations between dietary patterns and obesity among Chinese children and adolescents. The present study was designed to identify dietary patterns and their relationships with childhood obesity in medium and small cities. This is a cross-sectional study of children participants aged 6⁻17 years old in the 2010⁻2012 China Nutrition and Health Survey (CNHS). Socio-demographics, life-style, physical activity, anthropometric variables, and hundred-item food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) were collected. Household income was classified as low, middle, and high. Traffic tools, from non-advanced to advanced, included walking, biking, bus, and car. Dietary patterns were identified using factor analysis of data from FFQs. Two dietary patterns were identified: a Westernized pattern (i.e., high cakes, snacks, sugary beverages, aquatic products, red meat, fruits, and nuts) and a Traditional Chinese pattern (i.e., high cereals, tubers, legumes, fried cereal food, and vegetables). The Westernized pattern was positively correlated with energy intake, household income, traffic tools, and negative correlated with age and housework time. The Traditional Chinese pattern was positively correlated with age, energy intake, and housework time, and negatively correlated with household income and traffic tools. After adjusting for confounding factors, the Westernized pattern was found to be associated with BMI increment, yielding ß coefficients (95% confidence interval, 95% CI) of 0.57 (0.40, 0.85) for the fourth quartile. In addition, the Westernized pattern was also found to be significantly associated with an increased risk of obesity, yielding an odds ratio (OR, 95% CI) of 1.49 (1.21, 1.84) from fully-adjusted confounders. Promoting healthier eating patterns could help to prevent obesity in Chinese children. The findings of this study could be used to guide the development of evidence-based preventive nutrition interventions to curb childhood obesity epidemic in small⁻medium cities in China.

RESUMO

A pair of epimer brachyanins A (1) and B (2), along with a new phloroglucinol brachyanin C (3), were isolated from the leaves of Leptospermum brachyandrum. Brachyanins A (1) and B (2) were the first example of novel meroterpenoid with a unique skeleton that combined a synacrpic acid and a pinene units via a benzyl moiety. Their structures were elucidated through the application of extensive spectroscopic measurements and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and with the absolute configurations of 1 and 2 were confirmed by the quantum chemical CD calculation. The hetero Diels-Alder as the key biotransformation was proposed to account for the biosynthesis of brachyanins A and B sheding light by the potential procursor brachyanin C.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe changes in waist circumference (WC) and prevalence of abdominal obesity over a period of 10 years among Chinese adults in different socio-economic status (SES). METHODS: Data derived from the China Nutrition and Health Surveillance during 2002 and 2010-2012. We calculated the mean WC and the prevalence of abdominal obesity by gender, place of residence, SES indicators (education, income, and marital status), and body mass index (BMI) categoriesand used pooled t-tests to assess the differences between the two time periods. RESULTS: 26.0% of men and 25.3% of women had abdominal obesity in 2010-2012. The age-adjusted mean WC increased by 2.7 cm among men and 2.1 cm among women; the age-adjusted prevalence of abdominal obesity increased by 7.7% among men and 5.3% among women. The rising trends were observed in all subgroups except for a negative growth in high-income women. People living in rural areas with low education and income and with a BMI of 18.5 to 23.9 kg/m2 had a greater absolute and relative increase in WC. People living in rural areas with low income had a greater relative increase in abdominal obesity. CONCLUSION: The mean WC and prevalence of abdominal obesity among Chinese adults have increased during the past 10 years. Gender differences were noted using various SES indicators.
