RESUMO

Atrazine, a widely used herbicide in modern agriculture, can lead to soil contamination and adverse effects on specific crops. To address this, we investigated the efficacy of biochar loaded with Paenarthrobacter sp. AT5 (an atrazine-degrading bacterial strain) in mitigating atrazine's impact on soybeans in black soil. Bacterially loaded biochar (BBC) significantly enhanced atrazine removal rates in both unplanted and planted soil systems. Moreover, BBC application improved soybean biomass, photosynthetic pigments, and antioxidant systems while mitigating alterations in metabolite pathways induced by atrazine exposure. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of BBC in reducing atrazine-induced oxidative stress on soybeans in black soil, highlighting its potential for sustainable agriculture.

Postoperative pain (POP) is a major clinical challenge. Local anesthetics (LAs), including amide-type LAs, ester-type LAs, and other potential ion-channel blockers, are emerging as drugs for POP management because of their effectiveness and affordability. However, LAs typically exhibit short durations of action and prolonging the duration by increasing their dosage or concentration may increase the risk of motor block or systemic local anesthetic toxicity. In addition, techniques using LAs, such as intrathecal infusion, require professional operation and are prone to catheter displacement, dislodgement, infection, and nerve damage. With the development of materials science and nanotechnology, various LAs delivery systems have been developed to compensate for these disadvantages. Numerous delivery systems have been designed to continuously release a safe dose in a single administration to ensure minimal systemic toxicity and prolong pain relief. LAs delivery systems can also be designed to control the duration and intensity of analgesia according to changes in the external trigger conditions, achieve on-demand analgesia, and significantly improve pain relief and patient satisfaction. In this review, we summarize POP pathways, animal models and methods for POP testing, and highlight LAs delivery systems for POP management. Rationale: Tumor ablation can cause severe pain to patients, but there is no satisfactory means of analgesia available. In addition, recurrence of residual tumors due to incomplete ablation threatens patient safety. Photothermal therapy (PTT), a promising approach for tumor ablation, also faces the aforementioned problems. Therefore, developing novel photothermal agents that can efficiently relieve PTT-associated pain and potentiate the PTT efficacy are urgently needed. Methods: The Pluronic F127 hydrogel doped with indocyanine green (ICG) was served as photothermal agent for PTT. Mouse model that inoculation of tumor near the sciatic nerve was constructed to assess the PTT-evoked pain. Subcutaneous and sciatic nerve vicinal tumor-bearing mice were used to test the efficacy of PTT. Results: PTT-evoked pain depends on an increase in tumor temperature and is accompanied by the activation of TRPV1. A simple introduction of local anesthetic (LA) ropivacaine into ICG-loaded hydrogels relieves PTT-induced pain and exerts long-lasting analgesia compared with opioid analgesia. More interestingly, ropivacaine upregulates major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) in tumor cells by impairing autophagy. Therefore, a hydrogel co-doped with ropivacaine, TLR7 agonist imiquimod and ICG was rationally designed. In the hydrogel system, imiquimod primes tumor-specific CD8+ T cells through promoting DCs maturation, and ropivacaine facilitates tumor cells recognition by primed CD8+ T cells through upregulating MHC-I. Consequently, the hydrogel maximumly increases CD8+ T cells infiltration into tumor and potentiates PTT efficacy. Conclusion: This study for the first time provides an LA-dopped photothermal agents for painless PTT and innovatively proposes that a LA can be used as an immunomodulator to potentiate the PTT efficacy.

Postoperative pain (POP) can promote tumor recurrence and reduce the cancer patient's quality of life. However, POP management has always been separated from tumor treatment in clinical practice, and traditional postoperative analgesia using opioids is still unsatisfactory for patients, which is not conducive to tumor treatment. Here, ropivacaine, a popular amide-type LA, was introduced into a Pluronic F127 hydrogel. Postoperative analgesia with ropivacaine-loaded hydrogels reduced the incidence of high-dose ropivacaine-induced convulsions and prolonged pain relief for more than 16 h. More interestingly, ropivacaine-loaded hydrogel was found to upregulate major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) in tumor cells by impairing autophagy. Therefore, a hydrogel co-dopped with ropivacaine and TLR7 agonist imiquimod (PFRM) was rationally synthesized. After postoperative analgesia with PFRM, imiquimod primes tumor-specific CD8+T cells through promoting DCs maturation, and ropivacaine facilitates tumor cells recognition by primed CD8+T cells through upregulating MHC-I. Consequently, postoperative analgesia with PFRM maximumly increases CD8+T cells infiltration into residual tumor tissue and prevents tumor recurrence. Overall, this study for the first time provides an LA-based approach for simultaneous long-lasting postoperative analgesia and prevention of tumor recurrence.

The wide disparity in outcomes of Alzheimer's disease (AD) treatment from preclinical to clinical studies suggests an urgent need for more effective therapeutic targets and approaches to treat AD. CaMKII is a potential target for AD therapy; however, conflicting reports on the relationship between CaMKII and AD suggest a lack of deeper understanding of the interaction between CaMKII and AD. In addition to the lack of effective therapeutic targets, pharmacokinetic limitations of neuroprotective drugs, such as low lipophilicity to cross blood brain barrier, need to be urgently addressed in the practice of AD therapy. In this study, we prepared a carbon-based nanoparticle, Nano C60, and demonstrated that Nano C60 treatment promoted the translocation of phosphorylated CaMKIIα from the cytoplasm to the synapse in Aß42 oligomers-treated cells and APP/PS1 mice. As a result, Nano C60 administration significantly improved spatial learning and memory in APP/PS1 mice. Our study suggests that synaptic-activated CaMKII may be more important than total CaMKII in AD treatment and provides a new strategy for AD therapy.

A single small population of chasmophytic plants is described as M ojiangia oreophila, a monotypic genus in the subtribe Crepidinae, characterised by a unique combination of morphological features, in particular densely long-papillose homomorphic achenes with five main ribs each accompanied by two secondary ribs, coarse brownish pappus bristles, moderately many-flowered capitula, a small involucre with numerous outer phyllaries, perennial rosette herb growth and brown-woolly caudex and leaf axils. Molecular phylogenetic analysis detected that in the nrITS phylogeny M. oreophila forms a clade of its own in the Crepidinae; in the plastid DNA phylogeny it is nested in the clade formed by the hybridogenous genus Faberia, the maternal ancestor of which comes from the Crepidinae and the paternal ancestor from the Lactucinae, where Faberia is placed in nrITS phylogenies. M. oreophila shares several morphological features with Faberia and also shares the expected chromosome number of 2n = 16 with its hitherto unknown maternal ancestor. M. oreophila may therefore be a successor of the maternal ancestor of Faberia. Alternatively, cytonuclear discordance is to be assumed in Mojiangia, caused by chloroplast capture as a result of hybridisation and introgression with Faberia.

Biodiversity conservation is a required co-benefit of REDD+. Biodiversity monitoring is therefore needed, yet in most areas it will be constrained by limitations in the available human professional and financial resources. REDD+ programs that use forest plots for biomass monitoring may be able to take advantage of the same data for detecting changes in the tree diversity, using the richness and abundance of canopy trees as a proxy for biodiversity. If local community members are already assessing the above-ground biomass in a representative network of forest vegetation plots, it may require minimal further effort to collect data on the diversity of trees. We compare community members and trained scientists' data on tree diversity in permanent vegetation plots in montane forest in Yunnan, China. We show that local community members here can collect tree diversity data of comparable quality to trained botanists, at one third the cost. Without access to herbaria, identification guides or the Internet, community members could provide the ethno-taxonomical names for 95% of 1071 trees in 60 vegetation plots. Moreover, we show that the community-led survey spent 89% of the expenses at village level as opposed to 23% of funds in the monitoring by botanists. In participatory REDD+ programs in areas where community members demonstrate great knowledge of forest trees, community-based collection of tree diversity data can be a cost-effective approach for obtaining tree diversity information.

Vascular epiphytes are an understudied and particularly important component of tropical forest ecosystems. However, owing to the difficulties of access, little is known about the properties of epiphyte-host tree communities and the factors structuring them, especially in Asia. We investigated factors structuring the vascular epiphyte-host community and its network properties in a tropical montane forest in Xishuangbanna, SW China. Vascular epiphytes were surveyed in six plots located in mature forests. Six host and four micro-site environmental factors were investigated. Epiphyte diversity was strongly correlated with host size (DBH, diameter at breast height), while within hosts the highest epiphyte diversity was in the middle canopy and epiphyte diversity was significantly higher in sites with canopy soil or a moss mat than on bare bark. DBH, elevation and stem height explained 22% of the total variation in the epiphyte species assemblage among hosts, and DBH was the most important factor which alone explained 6% of the variation. Within hosts, 51% of the variation in epiphyte assemblage composition was explained by canopy position and substrate, and the most important single factor was substrate which accounted for 16% of the variation. Analysis of network properties indicated that the epiphyte host community was highly nested, with a low level of epiphyte specialization, and an almost even interaction strength between epiphytes and host trees. Together, these results indicate that large trees harbor a substantial proportion of the epiphyte community in this forest.

This study aims to investigate whether the cultivation peony, can take the place of wild herbaceous peony by comparing the biological traits and paeoniflorin content between them. The result showed that the biomass of the stem, leaf, crown, fleshy root and fine root of wild plants were all smaller than that of bud asexual cultivated plants, while there was no significant differences in below-ground and aboveground biomass ratio between these two plants. The stele diameter, the proportion of stele, and the ratio of stele diameter to cortex thickness of wild plants were significantly higher than that of bud asexual cultivated plants, while the cortex thickness and the proportion of cortex were significantly smaller than bud asexual cultivated plants. Although the biological traits of bud asexual cultivated plants have changed significantly, the paeoniflorin content in fleshy roots has no significant difference between wild and bud asexual cultivated plants. Therefore, it is feasible to use the bud asexual cultivation to the conservation and large-scale cultivation of Paeonia laciflora, which is an endangered species.

Based on the long-term cutting experiment, this paper analyzed the responses of the aboveground biomass of five dominant and subdominant plant species and the community stability in a Stipa krylovii steppe of Inner Mongolia to various cutting height. Cutting with a stubble height of > 10 cm had slight effects on the aboveground biomass of the five species. Cutting with a stubble height of 10 cm benefited the growth of Artemisia frigida but made against the growth of Stipa krylovii. Cleistogenes squarrosa at the stubble height of 2 cm performed best, and Carex korshinskyi at the stubble height of 5 cm contributed most to the community, with the biomass positively correlated with the cutting years. Potentilla acaulis growth was detrimentally affected at the stubble heights of 2 and 15 cm. Overall, perennial species with higher plant height and stronger competitive ability were more tolerant to disturbances, and a minimum cutting height of 10 cm should be applied to maintain a high stability of the steppe ecosystem.
