RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (S-AKI) is a critical illness and is often associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. The soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) is an important immune mediator and is involved in kidney injury. However, its diagnostic value in S-AKI patients remains unclear. Therefore, we assessed the early predictive value of suPAR for S-AKI patients. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled adult patients, immediately after fulfilling the sepsis-3 criteria. Plasma suPAR levels at 0-, 12-, 24-, and 48-h post-sepsis diagnosis were measured. S-AKI development was the primary outcome. S-AKI risk factors were analyzed using logistic regression, and the value of plasma suPAR for early S-AKI diagnosis was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. RESULTS: Of 179 sepsis patients, 63 (35.2%) developed AKI during hospitalization. At 12-, 24-, and 48-h post-sepsis diagnosis, plasma suPAR levels were significantly higher in patients with S-AKI than in patients without S-AKI (p < 0.05). The plasma suPAR had the highest area under the ROC curve of 0.700 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.621-0.779) at 24-h post-sepsis diagnosis, at which the best discrimination ability for S-AKI was achieved with suPAR of ≥6.31 ng/mL (sensitivity 61.9% and specificity 71.6%). Logistic regression analysis showed that suPAR at 24-h post-sepsis diagnosis remained an independent S-AKI risk factor after adjusting for mechanical ventilation, blood urea nitrogen, and pH. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that plasma suPAR may be a potential biomarker for early S-AKI diagnosis.

RESUMO

Organic electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries have attracted significant attention in recent years. Polymer electrode materials, as compared to small-molecule electrode materials, have the advantage of poor solubility, which is beneficial for achieving high cycling stability. However, the severe entanglement of polymer chains often leads to difficulties in preparing nanostructured polymer electrodes, which is vital for achieving fast reaction kinetics and high utilization of active sites. This study demonstrates that these problems can be solved by the in situ electropolymerization of electrochemically active monomers in nanopores of ordered mesoporous carbon (CMK-3), combining the advantages of the nano-dispersion and nano-confinement effects of CMK-3 and the insolubility of the polymer materials. The as-prepared nanostructured poly(1-naphthylamine)/CMK-3 cathode exhibits a high active site utilization of 93.7%, ultrafast rate capability of 60 A g-1 (≈320 C), and an ultralong cycle life of 10000 cycles at room temperature and 45000 cycles at -15 °C. The study herein provides a facile and effective method that can simultaneously solve both the dissolution problem of small-molecule electrode materials and the inhomogeneous dispersion issue of polymer electrode materials.

RESUMO

Previous studies have uncovered the key role of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in various diseases, including cancer. However, the growth-inhibitory effects of circRNAs on esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) have not been completely elucidated. This study characterized a newly identified circRNA derived from exons 9-13 of TNRC6B (named circ-TNRC6B). The expression of circ-TNRC6B in ESCC tissues was markedly downregulated when compared to that in non-tumor tissues. In 53 ESCC cases, circ-TNRC6B expression was negatively correlated with the T stage. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that circ-TNRC6B upregulation was an independent protective factor for ESCC patients' prognosis. Overexpression and knockdown functional experiments demonstrated that circ-TNRC6B inhibited ESCC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. RNA immunoprecipitation and dual-luciferase reporter assays demonstrated that circ-TNRC6B sponges oncogenic miR-452-5p to upregulate the expression and activity of DAG1. Treatment with miR-452-5p inhibitor partially reversed the circ-TNRC6B-induced changes in the biological behavior of ESCC cells. These findings demonstrated that circ-TNRC6B exerts a tumor-suppressing effect in ESCC through the miR-452-5p/DAG1 axis. Thus, circ-TNRC6B is a potential prognostic biomarker for the clinical management of ESCC.

RESUMO

In this work, different BiOBr powders (without and with Zn doping) were prepared. Their specific properties and photocatalytic performance were studied. Zn doped BiOBr showed higher carrier transportation ability, beneficial to high performance photocatalysis. Further analysis and theoretical calculations unveiled that Zn doping resulted in more dispersive energy band structure with improved oxygen vacancy (OV) generation due to lattice distortion. OV acted as trap centers, playing dominant role in carrier transportation enhancement, which also synergized with more dispersive energy band due to Zn doping, improving carrier separation and transfer. Besides, Zn doping would further strengthen trapping effect under OV existence, stimulating synergistic enhancement to spatial charge separation and transfer with OV. With synergy of Zn doping and OV, Zn doped samples produced 1.75 times higher CH4 generation during gas-solid photocatalytic reduction of CO2 under visible light, testifying successful conducting of Zn doping improved photocatalytic capacity on BiOBr.

RESUMO

Crystal facet engineering and nonmetal doping are regarded as effective strategies for improving the separation of charge carriers and photocatalytic activity of semiconductor photocatalysts. In this paper, we developed a facial method for fabricating oxygen-deficient Br-doped BiOCl nanosheets with dominating {001} facets through a traditional hydrothermal reaction and explored the impact of the Br doping and specific facets on carrier separation and photocatalytic performance. The morphologies, structures, and optical and photocatalytic properties of the obtained products were characterized systematically. The BiOCl samples prepared by the hydrothermal reaction exhibited square-like shapes with dominating {001} facets. Photodeposition results indicated that photoinduced electrons preferred to transfer to {001} facets because of the strong internal static electric fields in BiOCl nanosheets with dominating {001} facets. Br doping not only contributed to the formation of impurity energy levels that could promote light absorption but introduced a large number of surface oxygen vacancies (VO) in BiOCl photocatalysts, which was beneficial for photocatalytic performance. Moreover, the photocatalytic activities of these products under visible light were tested by degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). Because of the synergistic effect of the dominating {001} facets, Br doping, and rich VO, oxygen-deficient Br-doped BiOCl nanosheets exhibited improved carrier separation, visible light absorption, and photocatalytic efficiency.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the matrix metalloproteinase-10 (MMP-10) expression pattern and to assess how it contributes to endochondral osteogenesis in Kashin-Beck disease (KBD). DESIGN: The cartilages of KBD patients, Sprague-Dawley rats fed with selenium (Se)-deficient diet and/or T-2 toxin, and ATDC5 cells were used in this study. ATDC5 cells were induced into hypertrophic chondrocytes using a 1% insulin-transferrin-selenium (ITS) culture medium for 21 days. The expressions of MMP-10 in the cartilages were visualized by immunohistochemistry. The messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein expression levels were determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blotting. MMP-10 short hairpin RNA (shRNA) was transfected into hypertrophic chondrocytes to knock down the gene expression of MMP-10. Meanwhile, the cell death of MMP-10-knockdown chondrocyte was detected using flow cytometry. RESULTS: The expression of MMP-10 was decreased in the growth plates of children with KBD. A decreased expression of MMP-10 also was observed in the growth plates of rats fed with an Se-deficient diet and/or T-2 toxin exposure. The mRNA and protein expression levels of MMP-10 increased during the chondrogenic differentiation of ATDC5 cells. MMP-10 knockdown in hypertrophic chondrocytes significantly decreased the gene and protein expression of collagen type II (Col II), Col X, Runx2, and MMP-13. Besides, the percentage of cell apoptosis was significantly increased after MMP-10 knockdown in hypertrophic chondrocytes. CONCLUSION: MMP-10 deficiency disrupts chondrocyte terminal differentiation and induces the chondrocyte's death, which impairs endochondral osteogenesis in the pathogenesis of KBD.

RESUMO

BiOCl powders with different morphology were obtained through self-assembling. Their photocatalytic performance was tested through degradation of organic dye and mechanism of photocatalytic for obtained samples were investigated. Relevant characterization demonstrated that facet synergy was a main reason of photocatalytic performance promotion due to changed facet exposure and proportion under self-assembling. Theory and experimental analysis manifested that synergistic facet stimulated Z scheme transition in samples with lower (001) facet proportion, which provided favorable condition of 1O2 generation and simultaneously generated prominent charge separation. This work unveiled the facet synergy dominant photocatalytic performance improvement in self-assembling system of BiOCl and verified decisive role of facet proportion in constructing Z-scheme facet junction, which also prompted possibility of improving 1O2 generation through facet engineering under self-assembling.

RESUMO

Defect engineering is an effective approach to manipulate electromagnetic (EM) parameters and enhance absorption ability, but defect induced dielectric loss dominant mechanism has not been completely clarified. Here the defect induced dielectric loss dominant mechanism in virtue of multi-shelled spinel hollow sphere for the first time is demonstrated. The unique but identical morphology design as well as suitable composition modulation for serial spinels can exclude the disturbance of EM wave dissipation from dipolar/interfacial polarization and conduction loss. In temperature-regulated defect in NiCo2O4 serial materials, two kinds of defects, defect in spinel structure and oxygen vacancy are detected. Defect in spinel structure played more profound role on determining materials' EM wave dissipation than that of oxygen vacancy. When evaluated serial Co-based materials as absorbers, defect induced polarization loss is responsible for the superior absorption performance of NiCo2O4-based material due to its more defect sites in spinel structure. It is discovered that electron spin resonance test may be adopted as a novel approach to directly probe EM wave absorption capacities of materials. This work not only provides a strategy to prepare lightweight, efficient EM wave absorber but also illustrates the importance of defect engineering on regulation of materials' dielectric loss capacity.

RESUMO

Filter paper, as a widely used and low-cost lab consumable, can serve as template for the synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) materials since it is composed of 1D cellulosic fiber. In this work, 1D NiO/NiCo2O4 composite was simply fabricated by adsorption of Ni and Co acetate on the filter paper and subsequent calcination process. The precursors were obtained without further treatment to filter paper or chemical reaction between metal salts. Calcination process leads to the removal of template and formation of binary NiO/NiCo2O4 composite. Electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption performance of NiO/NiCo2O4 composite could be tuned by adjusting the calcination temperatures and dosage of metal salts. For the optimized absorber (calcination temperature of 600 °C and dosage of Ni and Co acetate with 2 mmol and 4 mmol), a wide absorption bandwidth of 6.08 GHz could be achieved with thickness of 1.88 mm and minimum reflection loss value was up to -57.4 dB by changing the thickness. The facile synthetic route may also inspire the preparation of other high-performance one-dimensional EM wave absorbing materials.

RESUMO

A new photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform comprising TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiONTAs), polyaniline (PANI), and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was successfully fabricated. After loading the enzyme, this Au-PANI-TiONTA electrode showed excellent response to glucose at a linear range of 2-36 mM with a 0.02 mM detection limit. Good PEC performance was obtained due to the following advantages of the material: high visible-light harvesting ability for excellent light trapping capacity of PANI and AuNPs, good separation of the photo-induced charges related to the specific Au-PANI-TiONTA heterostructure, efficient electrode surface reaction kinetics derived from the large specific surface area of TiONTAs and improved electrode catalytic activity. This work proposed a new and general PEC enzymatic format and can be extended to prepare different PEC biosensors for biomolecules such as DNA, proteins and substrates of oxidases.

RESUMO

Three-dimensional (3D) porous graphene oxide-maize amylopectin (GO-MA) composites with controllable pore-sizes composites in the range of 6-40 nm were prepared by facile hydrothermal-assisted assembly approaches. The morphologies, pore sizes, specific surface area (SSA) and compositions of GO-MAx:y composites with and different GO-to-MA mass ratios (x:y) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). To reveal the adsorption-desorption mechanism, effects of contact time, temperature, initial adsorbate concentration, pH value of the solution on the adsorption process were studied in detail. The adsorption capacities of 3D GO-MA20:1 composite for organic contaminants including tert-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ), p-aminophenol (PAP), p-nitrophenol (PNP), o-nitrophenol (MNP), hydroquinone (HQ), alizarin red S (ARS) and neutral red (NR) were 22.17, 116.4, 44.78, 36.96, 16.10, 39.92 and 24.23 mg g-1, respectively. The adsorption capacities of GO-MA30:1 composite for inorganic substances including Pb2+, Mn2+, Cr2O72-, Cd2+, Cu2+, Nd3+, La3+, Y3+, Yb3+ and Er3+ were 84.76, 7.92, 13.6, 17.64, 30.56, 25.52, 12.48, 16.96, 23.32 and 30.32 mg g-1, respectively. In addition, GO-MAx:y composites also exhibited high mechanical properties and good reusability. Consequently, GO-MAx:y composites could be used as reusable adsorbents for removal/enrichment inorganic/organic substances in aqueous solutions.
