Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has reached pandemic proportions globally, particularly affecting individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Objective: Our study aims to elucidate the diagnostic value of fasting C-peptide in combination with insulin resistance for assessing hepatic fibrosis in patients with T2DM and comorbid NAFLD. Design: This was a retrospective study. Setting: The study was conducted at the Affiliated Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. Participants: The research involved 76 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, diagnosed at our hospital from April 2020 to October 2022. Patients were categorized into the non-progressive hepatic fibrosis group (n = 64) and progressive hepatic fibrosis group (n = 12) based on fibrosis-4 value. Interventions: General data, systolic/diastolic blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, fasting C-peptide, fasting insulin, glycosylated hemoglobin, uric acid, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, and γ-glutamyl transferase were collected. Insulin resistance was calculated using a designated formula. Primary Outcomes Measures: The predictive impact of fasting C-peptide in combination with insulin resistance was evaluated through receiver operating characteristic curves. Results: The age, body mass index, fasting C-peptide, fasting insulin, aspartate transaminase, and insulin resistance showed a significant increase in the progressive hepatic fibrosis group compared to the non-progressive group (P = .006, P = .014, P < .001, P < .001, P = .004, and P = .021). The combination's sensitivity demonstrated an elevation compared to fasting C-peptide or insulin resistance alone (P = .005). Conclusions: Fasting C-peptide in combination with insulin resistance proves to have a substantial predictive impact on hepatic fibrosis in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, holding valuable clinical diagnostic potential.

Objective: To determine whether the uric acid/high­density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (UHR) is associated with visceral fat area (VFA) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: Participants aged 18-70 years with a diagnosis of T2DM were recruited from the National Metabolic Management Center from January 2020 to July 2022. Medical data collected for all participants included medical history, general measures, carotid intima-media thickness, abdominal VFA, and subcutaneous fat area (SFA). The participants were divided into groups according to VFA ≥100 cm2 (n=109) and VFA <100 cm2 (n=100). Results: Compared with the VFA <100 cm2 group, the VFA ≥100 cm2 group had higher height, weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), SFA, fasting plasma glucose, fasting insulin, C peptide, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase, γ-glutamine acyltransferase (γ-GGT), uric acid (UA), triglyceride (TG), and UHR measurements and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (P<0.05). No significant difference was observed between the groups for age, duration of T2DM, diastolic blood pressure, systolic blood pressure, IMT, glycosylated hemoglobin, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Positive correlations were found between the UHR and height, weight, BMI, WC, HC, C peptide, ALT, γ-GGT, TG, and UA, as well as between VFA and these variables (P<0.05). Both the UHR and VFA were negatively correlated with HDL-C (P<0.05). Positive correlations were observed between VFA and the UHR as well as UA (P<0.05), and a negative correlation was found between VFA and HDL-C (P<0.05). Multivariate linear stepwise regression identified BMI, WC, UHR, SFA, and HC as influencing factors for VFA (P<0.05). Conclusion: UHR was positively associated with VFA in T2DM patients and may be a useful and convenient additional tool for metabolic risks in these patients.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal enhancement of hepatic gluconeogenesis is a vital mechanism of the pathogenesis of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM); thus, its suppression may present an efficient therapeutic strategy for T2DM. Cyclocarya paliurus (CP), a plant species native to China, has been reported to have anti-hyperglycemia activity. Our previous studies have revealed that Cyclocarya paliurus triterpenic acids (CPT) exert the favorable glucose-lowering activity, but the regulatory effect of CPT on hepatic gluconeogenesis is still unclarified. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the potential role and mechanism of CPT in gluconeogenesis. STUDY DESIGN: In this study, the ameliorative effect and underlying mechanism of CPT on gluconeogenesis were investigated: high-fat diet and streptozotocin-induced T2DM mice and glucagon-challenged mouse primary hepatocytes. METHODS: T2DM model mice with or without oral administration of CPT for 4 weeks were monitored for body weight, glucose and lipid metabolism. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was used to observe liver lipid deposition. Real-time PCR assays were performed to examine the mRNA expression of glucose-6-phosphate (G6Pase), and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), two key enzymes involved in liver gluconeogenesis. Western blotting was used to determine AMP-dependent protein kinase (AMPK) expression and induction of the glucagon signaling pathway. The possible mechanism of CPT on liver gluconeogenesis was further explored in glucagon-induced mouse primary hepatocytes. RESULTS: In vivo and in vitro experiments revealed that CPT treatment significantly reduced fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and improved insulin resistance. Furthermore, CPT could obviously decreased the mRNA and protein expression of G6Pase and PEPCK, the cyclic AMP content, the phosphorylation level of protein kinase A and cyclic AMP response element-binding protein. But CPT promoted the phosphorylation of AMP-dependent protein kinase (AMPK) and activation of phosphodiesterase 4B. Mechanistically, intervention with Compound C (an AMPK inhibitor) partially blocked the suppressive effect of CPT on hepatic gluconeogenesis. CONCLUSION: These findings suggested that CPT may inhibit hepatic gluconeogenesis against T2DM by activating AMPK.

BACKGROUND: Stimulator of IFN genes (STING) is highly expressed in the livers of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients and high fat diet (HFD) induced NAFLD mice model. The STING signaling-mediated inflammation has been shown to play a critical role in metabolic disorders. Lingguizhugan decoction (LGZG), a Traditional Chinese herbal decoction, has been applied to treat metabolic disorders for many years. However, whether LGZG can alleviate the progression of NAFLD through inhibiting inflammation remains unclear. This study was to determine the role of STING-mediated inflammation in the HFD-induced hepatic-lipid deposition treated with LGZG. METHODS: The anti-inflammatory and anti-steatotic effects of LGZG in vivo were detected by H&E staining, immunofluorescence and immuno-chemistry. Mice bone-marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) and primary liver macrophages were treated with STING-specific agonist (DMXAA), LGZG and its critical components respectively. The treated culture supernatant of BMDMs and primary liver macrophages from each group was co-cultured with palmitic acid-treated mouse primary hepatocytes or mouse liver cell line AML-12 respectively to detect whether the activation of STING-mediated pathway is involved in the anti-steatotic effect of LGZG. The hepatocyte lipid deposition in vivo and in vitro were detected by oil red staining. Mitochondrial DNA release of mouse liver extracts were detected by real time PCR. The expression of proteins and inflammatory cytokines related to STING-TBK1-NF-κB pathway was detected by western blotting and ELISA. RESULTS: LGZG significantly ameliorated HFD induced hepatic steatosis, oxidative stress, hepatic mitochondrial damage and mitochondrial DNA release, which was correlated with reduction of the expression level of STING as well as the infiltration of STING-positive macrophages in the livers of HFD fed mice. The critical components of LGZG directly inhibited the activation of STING-TBK1-NF-κB pathway in liver macrophages induced by DMXAA, LPS, thereby reducing the release of IFNß and TNFα. Co-incubating the culture supernatant of LGZG treated liver macrophages and PA-stimulated hepatocytes significantly inhibited the PA-induced lipid deposition. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that LGZG can ameliorate HFD-induced hepatic-lipid deposition through inhibiting STING-TBK1-NF-κB pathway in liver macrophages, which provides novel insight for elucidating the molecular mechanism of LGZG alleviating HFD induced hepatic steatosis.

The disposal of fly ash with high salt content has become an important bottleneck for the further application of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI). In this study, the soluble salt content and composition of fly ash from different MSWI were analysed. The composition of fly ash was affected by incinerator type and flue gas cleaning system, especially the type of deacidification solvent. The soluble salt content in fly ash from MSW grate incinerator can be over 35.16%. Most of the soluble salt was calcium salt and chloride salt. The effect of washing parameters including liquid/solid (L/S) ratio and washing time on salt removal from fly ash were studied. Raw fly ash contained high chlorine (Cl) with the maximum of 19.83% and it can be significantly reduced by washing. Double-washing and secondary-washing had better performance than single-washing on salt removal. The secondary-washing did not only save water, but also reduced the energy cost during evaporation for crystallising soluble salt. Based on the analysis of variance (ANOVA), L/S ratio was the most principal factor for salt and Cl removal of fly ash by washing.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a growing global public health problem. It has been associated with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and an increased risk of all-cause mortality, as well as infertility. Calorie restriction (CR) is an effective life intervention to defend against obesity. This study aimed to investigate the effects of long-term moderate CR on the reproductive function and underlying mechanisms in a mouse model of obesity. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice were randomized to two groups receiving either a standard diet (STD) or a high-fat diet (HFD) for 8 weeks to induce obesity. The HFD-induced obesity mice were further randomized into two groups: HFD group and CR group (reduced the mean amount of HFD by 25%). After 12 weeks, the body weight, testicular coefficients, fasting blood glucose (FBG), serum triglyceride (TG), and total cholesterol (TC) were detected and measured. The sperm quality was detected by an automatic sperm quality analyzer (SQA-V). The structure of testicular tissues was examined by hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining. Testicular cell apoptosis was assessed by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining. The levels of NAD-dependent deacetylase sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) and antioxidative enzymes were detected in the testes. RESULTS: CR treatment reduced weight gain and increased testicle coefficients in HFD-induced obese mice. CR reduced the serum level of FBG, TG, and TC, and increased the serum levels of testosterone. Moreover, CR increased sperm count and motility, and sperm normality in obese mice. Furthermore, CR ameliorated the testicular morphological damage and cell apoptosis in obese mice. CR also attenuated the oxidative stress level and increased the protein expressions of SIRT1 in testicular tissues of obese mice. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term moderate CR improves obese male fertility, probably by alleviating oxidative stress via activation of SIRT1 signaling.

Dietary fiber is the basic therapeutic method to relieve the symptoms of chronic constipation. The aim of this study was to compare the laxative effect of konjac glucomannan (KGM) and konjac oligosaccharides (KOS) on constipated rats. KGM and KOS were administered to loperamide-induced constipated rats at dosages of 100 mg per kg bw and 400 mg per kg bw for 15 days. Feces were collected to evaluate the defecation function. X-ray imaging and an electrophysiological system were used to determine gastrointestinal (GI) motility. Immunohistochemistry and western blotting were used to measure the protein levels. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed to assess flatulence. Our results demonstrated that low-dose KOS (L-KOS) exerted the best laxative effect. Compared to the normal control (NC) group, the fecal number in the L-KOS group increased by 39.4%, and the fecal weight significantly increased by 31.9% which was higher than those in the low-dose KGM (L-KGM) and high-dose KGM (H-KGM) groups. The fecal moisture content and transit scores were significantly increased only in the L-KOS group. Meanwhile, less GI gas was produced by KOS. Additionally, further investigations suggested that KOS could upregulate the protein expression of stem cell factors (SCF)/c-kit, and significantly promoted the secretion of mucus. In conclusion, compared to KGM, KOS had a conspicuous laxative effect especially at a low dosage. The potential laxative mechanisms of KOS probably are regulating the SCF/c-kit signalling pathway and increasing mucus secretion. These findings indicated that as a kind of functional oligosaccharide, KOS is more conducive to alleviating constipation compared to polysaccharides.

This study aims to convert oil extracted food waste (OEFW) into hydrochar as potential solid fuel via hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process. The effect of HTC temperature and residence time on the physicochemical characteristic, combustion behavior, and the removal behavior of sodium and potassium were evaluated. The raw OEFW material was successfully converted into energy densified hydrochar with higher high heating value (HHV) (21.13-24.07 MJ/kg) and higher fuel ratio (0.112-0.146). In addition, carbon content in hydrochar increased to 46.92-51.82% after HTC at various operating conditions. Compared with OEFW, the hydrochar had more stable and longer combustion process with the higher ignition temperature and burnout temperature. Besides, the HTC process showed high removal rates of sodium and potassium. It was found that the HTC temperature resulted in a significant reduction of sodium and potassium in hydrochar as compared to the residence time. The highest removal rate of sodium (70.98%) and potassium (84.05%) was obtained. Overall, the results show that the HTC is a promising alternative for conventional technologies (e.g., incineration and landfill) for treatment and energy conversion of OEFW.

Resistance to thyroid hormone syndrome (RTH) is an autosomal dominant or recessive genetic disease caused by mutation of either the thyroid hormone receptorß (THR-ß) gene or the thyroid hormone receptorα (THR-α) gene. RTH due to mutations of the THR-ß gene (hereafter, RTH-ß) is characterized by a decreased response of the target tissue to thyroid hormone, increased serum levels of free triiodothyronine (FT3) and/or free thyroxine (FT4), and inappropriate secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH, normal or elevated). Clinical manifestations of RTH-ß vary from hyperthyroidism to hypothyroidism or simple goiter, and RTH-ß is often misdiagnosed clinically. The present review was prepared for the purpose of expanding knowledge of RTH-ß in order to reduce the rate of misdiagnosis.

In recent years, as living standards have continued to improve, the number of diabetes patients in China, along with the incidence of complications associated with the disease, has been increasing. Among these complications, diabetic foot disease is one of the main causes of disability and death in diabetic patients. Due to the differences in economy, culture, religion and level of medical care available across different regions, preventive and treatment methods and curative results for diabetic foot vary greatly. In multidisciplinary models built around diabetic foot, the timely assessment and diagnosis of wounds and appropriate methods of prevention and treatment with internal and external surgery are key to clinical practice for this pathology. In 2019, under the leadership of the Jiangsu Medical Association and Chinese Diabetes Society, the writing group for the Guidelines on multidisciplinary approaches for the prevention and management of diabetic foot disease (2020 edition) was established with the participation of scholars from the specialist areas of endocrinology, burn injury, vascular surgery, orthopedics, foot and ankle surgery and cardiology. Drawing lessons from diabetic foot guidelines from other countries, this guide analyses clinical practices for diabetic foot, queries the theoretical basis and grades and gives recommendations based on the characteristics of the pathology in China. This paper begins with assessments and diagnoses of diabetic foot, then describes treatments for diabetic foot in detail, and ends with protections for high-risk feet and the prevention of ulcers. This manuscript covers the disciplines of internal medicine, surgical, nursing and rehabilitation and describes a total of 50 recommendations that we hope will provide procedures and protocols for clinicians dealing with diabetic foot.

The aim of the present study was to analyze the effects of methylprednisolone pulse therapy (MPPT) courses on bone metabolism in patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO). A retrospective analysis of 45 patients with moderate-to-severe active GO who received 1 or 2 courses of MPPT was performed. Of these, 16 patients underwent 2 courses of treatment. Bone metabolic markers and the density of the lumbar spine (L1-4), femoral neck and total hip were measured using a dual-energy X-ray bone density instrument, and the differences in bone metabolism prior to and after treatment were determined for each group and compared. The results indicated that serum I collagen N-terminal peptide (P1NP) and serum ß-collagen crosslinked C-terminal peptide (CTX) were markedly decreased after the first pulse of treatment. In those patients who received a second course of MPPT, CTX levels were significantly decreased, but P1NP was not significantly different from the baseline value. CTX and P1NP levels remained unchanged between the first and second course of MPPT; similarly, there were no changes from baseline in 25(OH) vitamin D3 and bone mineral density after the first and second course of MPPT. However, the level of 25(OH) vitamin D3 was significantly elevated after the second course compared with the first course. In conclusion, the side effects of MPPT on bone metabolism were marginal and a second course of MPPT did not worsen bone metabolism. These MPPT regimens may therefore be considered to be a safe and effective treatment option for patients with moderate-to-severe active GO.

In China, waste sorting practice is not strictly followed, plastics, especially food packaging, are commonly mixed in food waste. Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of unsorted food waste was conducted in this study, using model unsorted food waste by mixture of pure food waste and plastic. Different operating parameters including reaction temperature, residence time, and feedstock concentration were investigated. Moreover, the effect of three representative food additives namely NaCl, NaHCO3 and Na2CO3 were tested in this work. Finally, comparative analysis about SCWG of unsorted food waste, pure food waste, and plastic was studied. It was found that higher reaction temperature, longer residence time and lower feedstock concentration were advantageous for SCWG of unsorted food waste. Within the range of operating parameters in this study, when the feedstock concentration was 5 wt%, the highest H2 yield (7.69 mol/kg), H2 selectivity (82.11%), total gas yield (17.05 mol/kg), and efficiencies of SCWG (cold gas efficiency, gasification efficiency, carbon gasification efficiency, and hydrogen gasification efficiency) were obtained at 480 °C for 75 min. Also, the addition of food additives with Na+ promoted the SCWG of unsorted food waste. The Na2CO3 showed the best catalytic performance on enhancement of H2 and syngas production. This research demonstrated the positive effect of waste sorting on the SCWG of food waste, and provided novel results and information that help to overcome the problems in the process of food waste treatment and accelerate the industrial application of SCWG technology in the future.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of IL-6 on the proliferation of thyroid cancer stem cells. METHODS: HTh74 and HTh74R thyroid cancer stem cells were cultured. The proliferation of thyroid cancer stem cells after IL-6 treatment was assessed by the MTT method. The effect of IL-6 on colony formation was observed by colony formation experiments. The expression of OCT4, ABCG2, CD133, and EMT markers was detected by real-time quantitative PCR. RESULTS: IL-6 promoted the proliferation of HTh74 and HTh74R thyroid cancer stem cells and enhanced sphere formation. However, anti-IL-6 inhibited the proliferation of cancer stem cells. IL-6 promoted colony formation by HTh74 and HTh74R cells and enhanced the expression of stem cell genes OCT4 and ABCG2. The expression of EMT markers E-cadherin was significantly decreased but the expression of vimentin and Snail was increased by IL-6 treatment. CONCLUSIONS: IL-6 promoted proliferation of thyroid cancer stem cells and colony formation, and increased characteristics of thyroid cancer stem cells and EMT. The proliferative effect of thyroid cancer stem cells depends on activation of the IL6/JAK1/STAT3 pathway. These effects may contribute to the development and metastasis of thyroid cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of testosterone on serum glucose,lipid,uric acid and insulin metabolism in male patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: A total of 205 male patients with type 2 diabetes participated in this study. They were divided into two groups: those with normal testosterone (TT) (TT≥12 nmol/L,n=135) and those with low TT (TT<12 nmol/L,n=70). Their body mass,waist circumference (WC),body mass index (BMI),blood glucose, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), serum uric acid (SUA),insulin,testosterone,luteinizing hormone (LH),follicle stimulating hormone (FSH),estradiol (E2),and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) were measured. The insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) of the participants was calculated using a homeostasis model. Sex hormone levels were compared across the four groups divided by HOMA-IR and SUA in quartiles. RESULTS: The participants with low TT had higher age,SUA,BMI,WC,and HOMA-IR (P<0.05). TT and SHBG decreased with increased HOMA-IR index (P<0.05). TT,LH,FSH and SHBG decreased with increased SUA (P<0.05). The logistic regression model showed that SUA and BMI were predictors of hypogonadism. CONCLUSION: Male patients with type 2 diabetes who are prone to hypogonadism, are possibly related to increased SUA and obesity.

RESUMO

A rare case of resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH) complicated with Graves' hyperthyroidism was reported. The management of this disease is similar to that of Graves' disease. Antithyroid drug therapy is the first choice, and iodine therapy and surgery are not recommended due to the possibility of severe hypothyroidism and enlargement of the pituitary gland.

The association between serum uric acid (SUA) level and sexual dysfunction in patients with diabetes is not well characterized. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) causes metabolic disorders, including abnormal serum uric acid (SUA) levels. In this study, we enrolled 205 male patients with T2DM and investigated the relationship between sex hormone levels and SUA. Patients were divided into four groups based on SUA quartiles. On the other hand, based on the total testosterone (TT) level, patients were divided into three groups; SUA and other laboratory indices were determined. Increase in SUA level was significantly associated with decreased levels of TT, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, sex hormone-binding globulin, and increased levels of dehydroepiandrosterone, age, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, glycated hemoglobin, serum creatinine, and HOMA-IR levels. SUA, waist circumference, BMI, and HOMA-IR showed a negative correlation with TT level, while age showed a positive correlation with TT level. SUA and body mass index were found to be risk factors for gonadal dysfunction. Therefore, we conclude that hypogonadism of male patients with T2DM is related to SUA level.

BACKGROUND: An anti-proliferative effect of vitamin D has been reported in different carcinomas, including thyroid cancer. Cancer stem cells (CSCs), a very small fraction of cancer cells, are widely believed to be responsible for cancer initiation, relapse and metastasis. OBJECTIVES: We addressed the question as to whether CSCs derived from the anaplastic thyroid carcinoma cell lines SW1736, C643, HTh74 and its doxorubicin- resistant subline HTh74R are also a target of vitamin D action. METHODS: The effect of calcitriol on growth of HTh74, HTh74R, SW1736 and C643 cell lines was investigated by cell viability assays. In stem-enriched cells derived from thyro-spheres cell cycle analysis and apoptotic assays were performed. Furthermore, the role of calcitriol in the formation of cancer thyro-spheres and its putative differentiation-inducing effect were analysed. RESULTS: CSCs isolated as thyro-spheres from all the four anaplastic thyroid carcinoma cells expressed vitamin D receptors as did their parental cells. Calcitriol inhibited proliferation of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma cells with a more pronounced effect on doxorubicin-resistant HTh74R cells, and it significantly reduced the capacity to form stem cell-derived spheres and decreased the size of these spheres that consist of CSCs and their progenitor cells. As revealed by cell cycle analysis, calcitriol induced G2/M phase arrest in thyro-sphere cells derived cells from HTh74, HTh74R and C643 but did not affect apoptosis. Finally, calcitriol altered morphology of CSCs. CONCLUSION: Calcitriol inhibited the growth of CSCs derived from anaplastic thyroid cancer cells. It may also exert a pro-differentiation effect in thyroid CSCs.

BACKGROUND: Male hypogonadism is an endocrine disease characterized by low levels of serum testosterone and is closely related to the development of diabetes. The purpose of the present study was to observe the risk factors for hypogonadism in male patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: A total of 213 patients with type 2 diabetes were enrolled and divided into a low total testosterone (TT) group (=75) and a normal TT group (=138). The patients' blood glucose, blood lipids, serum insulin, and sex hormones were measured. The correlations between the patients' metabolic index and sex hormone levels were analyzed. RESULTS: Compared with the normal TT group, body mass index (BMI), fasting insulin (FINS), and HOMA insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) levels were significantly higher, but the luteinizing hormone (LH) levels were significantly lower in the low TT group (p < 0.05). Correlation analyses found that TT was negatively correlated with BMI, waist circumference (WC), FINS, and HOMA-IR. TT was positively correlated with LH and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). CONCLUSIONS: Several risk factors of diabetes associated closely with hypogonadism. BMI, metabolic syndrome (MS), HOMA-IR, and LH are independent risk factors for hypogonadism in male patients with type 2 diabetes.

Objective. GD with ATD-induced hepatic injury or leukopenia occurs frequently in clinical practice. The purpose of the present study was to observe the clinical effect of lithium carbonate on hyperthyroidism in patients with GD with hepatic injury or leukopenia. Methods. Fifty-one patients with GD with hepatic injury or leukopenia participated in the study. All patients were treated with lithium carbonate, in addition to hepatoprotective drugs or drugs that increase white blood cell count. Thyroid function, liver function, and white blood cells were measured. Clinical outcomes were observed after a 1-year follow-up. Results. After treatment for 36 weeks, symptoms of hyperthyroidism and the level of thyroid hormones were improved and liver function, and white blood cells returned to a normal level. Twelve patients (23.5%) obtained clinical remission, 6 patients (11.8%) relapsed after withdrawal, 25 patients (49.0%) received radioiodine therapy, and 8 patients (15.7%) underwent surgical procedures after lithium carbonate treatment. Conclusion. Lithium carbonate has effects on the treatment of mild-to-moderate hyperthyroidism caused by GD, and it is particularly suitable for patients with ATD-induced hepatic injury or leukopenia.
