RESUMO

Depression is one of the major causes of disability in societies worldwide. However, only a few studies have been conducted to analyze the relationship between vitamin A levels and depression. This study aimed to explore the vitamin A levels in the plasma of first-episode drug-naïve depression patients. 48 healthy controls and 75 first-episode drug-naïve outpatients were recruited in our research and a total of 18 patients were followed for 24 weeks. There was no difference in plasma vitamin A levels among healthy controls and patients with depression. After 24 weeks antidepressant treatment, plasma vitamin A levels were decreased. Interestingly, this alteration of vitamin A was only found in female patients. Moreover, correlation analyses showed that plasma vitamin A levels were significantly associated with depressive symptomatic index only in female depression patients. We found that the levels of vitamin A were decreased in female patients with depression during antidepressant therapy. Further study of gender difference in vitamin A levels is needed to reveal the mechanism.

RESUMO

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) can lead to a poor outcome of severe sequelae, and the current methods of clinical diagnosis are not satisfactory. Metabolomics is an effective method for the identification of disease-related metabolite biomarkers to facilitate disease diagnosis. However, to the best of our knowledge, no PID-associated metabolomic study has yet been carried out. The metabolomic changes of rats with PID were investigated in the present study. A PID model was constructed by the multi-pathogenic infection of the upper genital tract in rats. Infiltration of inflammatory cells and elevated expression levels of the cytokines interleukin (IL)-1ß and IL-6 in the uterus and fallopian tubes validated the disease model. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry coupled with derivatization was used to determine the urine metabolomic profile. Principal component analysis and partial least squares-discriminant analysis of the data sets showed a clear separation of metabolic profiles between rats with PID and control rats. Eighteen differentiating metabolites were found, including four amino acids, three fatty acids, nine organic acids, and two sugars, which indicated alterations in sugar metabolism, the citric acid cycle, amino acid metabolism and fatty acid metabolism. These metabolites could be potential biomarkers of PID, and this research may offer a new approach to evaluate the effect of anti-PID drugs in pre-clinical or clinical trials.

RESUMO

To analyze the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of two subtypes of neurokinin (NK) receptors, NK1R and NK2R (also known as TAC1R and TAC2R), in colorectal cancer (CRC), peripheral blood samples were collected from 199 CRC patients. Direct-sequencing was performed to identify the NK1R rs10198644 and NK2R rs4644560 SNPs. Genotype results were correlated with clinical factors. The allele frequencies of NK1R rs10198644 GC, CC and GG were 52, 17 and 31%, respectively, while that of NK2R rs4644560 GC, CC, and GG were 36, 50 and 14%, respectively. Patients with NK2R rs4644560 GC exhibited more positive lymph nodes than those with CC (mean, 2.2 vs. 1.3; P=0.016). Further analysis highlighted that the number of positive lymph nodes was also increased in the NK2R rs4644560 GC/NK1R rs10198644 GG group compared with the NK2R rs4644560 GG/NK1R rs10198644 GG group (mean, 2.2 vs. 0.9; P=0.04). These data suggested that the NK2R rs4644560 GC polymorphism alone or combination with NK1R rs10198644 GG may be a promising prognostic marker of lymph node metastasis in CRC patients.

RESUMO

The type of chromosome No. 1 and chromosome number from 53 individuals of Microtus mandarinus have been studied and compared in three sex types: XY, XX, XO. We found that the first pair of autosomes are very unstable, and there are three types: (1) M, M (With a double metacentric chromosome), (2) M, T, T, (With single metacentric chromosome). (3) T, T, T, T (Without metacentric chromosome). The chromosome number of the same sex individuals changes regularly with the type change of chromosome No. 1, that is, the increase of one chromosome in 2n number is always accompanied by the increase of two T and the decrease of one M, and vice versa. The synaptonemal complexes (SCs) of spermatocyte in pachytene nuclei from the males (2n = 51) were analysed by the electron microscopy. The SCs studies demonstrate that there are 23 fully paired autosomal bivalents, XY-bivalent and an autosomal trivalent. This trivalent is formed by one metacentric and two telocentric elements and characterized by the presence of two short side-arms. Meanwhile, all trivalents are in a cis configuration. The study of G-banding also demonstrates that the No. 1 autosome polymorphism is caused by Robertsonian translocation. Robertsonian fission is the main reason of the polymorphism of chromosome No. 1 and of variation of chromosome number in M. mandarinus.
