RESUMO

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and pain fluctuations of methylcobalamin in combination with lidocaine local injection treatment for subacute herpetic neuralgia (SHN). Methods: Seventy-nine women (60.4 ± 2.7 years) with thoracic SHN were enrolled and randomized to receive a combination of methylcobalamin and lidocaine local injection (MI, N=40), or a combination of lidocaine patch 5% and oral methylcobalamin (PO, N=39) for four weeks. Repeated-measures analyses of variance were used to evaluate the effect on pain levels. Generalized estimation equations were used to analyze the cause-effect relationship between pain fluctuations and influencing factors. Results: At the treatment endpoint, the group, treatment time, and group interacted with treatment time effects of the pain scores and area were statistically significant (P<0.001), The pain scores were 2.9 ±0.9 (MI) and 4.3 ± 1.5 (PO). 80.00% (MI) or 28.21% (PO) of patients had pain scores ≤ 3, the odds ratio was 2.84 (95% CI: 1.68 to 4.79). The incidence of postherpetic neuralgia was 5.0% (2/40) at 3 months. Pain fluctuated repeatedly during treatment. The pain fluctuation increased from 8.75 log folds in the afternoon, to 79.85 log folds at night. With the ADLs level increasing from 1 to 3, the pain fluctuated from 4.28 to 17.70 log folds. Allodynia, itching, sleep quality, and ADLs were the significant influencing factors (P<0.05). Conclusion: This study validated the efficacy of methylcobalamin combined with lidocaine for SHN, and confirmed that pain levels in patients with SHN had an obvious circadian rhythm. ADLs were an important cause of pain fluctuations.

RESUMO

The ubiquitous presence of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in ocean environments threatens marine organisms. However, its effects on immunity of marine invertebrates at environmentally realistic levels are still largely unknown. In this study, the immunotoxicity of PCP to a representative bivalve species was evaluated. In addition, its impacts on metabolism, energy supply, detoxification, and oxidative stress status were also analysed by physiological examination as well as comparative transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses to reveal potential mechanisms underpinning. Results illustrated that the immunity of blood clams was evidently hampered upon PCP exposure. Additionally, significant alterations in energy metabolism were detected in PCP-exposed clams. Meanwhile, the expressions of key detoxification genes and the in vivo contents (or activity) of key detoxification enzymes were markedly altered. Exposure to PCP also triggered significant elevations in intracellular ROS and MDA whereas evident suppression of haemocyte viability. The abovementioned findings were further supported by transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses. Our results suggest that PCP may hamper the immunity of the blood clam by (i) constraining the cellular energy supply through disrupting metabolism; and (ii) damaging haemocytes through inducing oxidative stress. Considering the high similarity of immunity among species, many marine invertebrates may be threatened by PCP, which deserves more attention.

RESUMO

To evaluate the pollution level and health risk of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH), seawater, sediments, and aquatic organisms were sampled from the southern sea area of Zhejiang Province (Yangtze River Delta, China) between 2017 and 2019. TPH was widely present in the aquatic environment and products, and its concentration was highly variable. The average value of pollution index (PI) exceeded 1 from 2017 to 2018, and 45.46-69.19% of seawater samples and 56.87-50.00% of sediment samples were polluted. The results showed significant differences in the TPH concentration in various species of aquatic organisms. The average TPH value in aquatic organisms could be ranked in the order as follows: bivalve > shrimp > crab > fish, further reflecting that the ability to accumulate and metabolize TPH existed differently among aquatic organisms within the same pond aquaculture environment. It was relatively safe to eat aquatic products since the exposure risk index was found to be far below the threshold value in this study. Therefore, it would be prudent to undertake regular monitoring of TPH to ensure effective ecosystem functioning and seafood safety in the southern Zhejiang ocean.

RESUMO

Seaweed growth is often limited by light. Artificial light supply has been well studied in terrestrial agriculture, however, much less is known about its effect in seaweed aquaculture. In this study, the effects of four artificial light sources (white, red, green, and blue LEDs light) on a brown alga Sargassum fusiforme and a green alga Ulva pertusa were investigated. Seaweed growth, accumulation of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a and carotenoid), and soluble protein were evaluated. White LED light was the optimal supplementary light when cultivating Ulva pertusa and Sargassum fusiforme, because it promoted seaweed growth while maintaining protein production. Meanwhile, red LED was unfavored in the cultivation of S. fusiforme, as it affected the seaweed growth and has a lower residual energy ratio underneath the water. LEDs would be a promising supplementary light source for seaweed cultivation.

RESUMO

Both the frequent occurrence of accidental petroleum spills and the ubiquitous presence of microplastics (MPs) in the sea may pose severe threats to marine species. However, the immunotoxic impacts of these two types of pollutants and the underlying toxication mechanisms still remain largely unknown in sessile filter-feeding bivalve mollusks. Therefore, the impacts of exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons and MPs alone or in combination on the total count, cell type composition, and phagocytic activity of hemocytes were investigated in the blood clam, Tegillarca granosa. In addition, the intracellular ROS content, cell viability, degree of DNA damage, and expression levels of genes from immune-, apoptosis-, and immunotoxicity-related pathways were analyzed to reveal the potential toxication mechanisms. The results demonstrated that exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons and MPs alone or in combination at environmentally realistic concentrations could exert significant immunotoxic impacts on the blood clam, which may be caused by alterations in a series of physiological and molecular processes. In addition, the immunotoxicity of petroleum hydrocarbons could be significantly aggravated by the copresence of MPs, which suggests that coexposure to these two pollutants deserves closer attention.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect and mechanism of surround needling combined with acupoint injection on acute herpetic neuralgia (AHN). METHODS: Ninety-nine patients with T6-T10 segment AHN were randomly divided into 3 groups, 33 cases in each group, including 2 cases dropped off in the surround needling group, 4 cases dropped off in the acupoint injection group, and 3 cases dropped off in the combined group. Oral valacyclovir was given in each group, 0.3 g each time, 2 times a day for 10 days. Oblique insertion of needle used at ashi points around the herpes in the surround needling group, and continuous wave was stimulated to tolerance for 20 min; the same acupoints were selected as the surround needling group, stimulated with the mixture injection of mecobalamin and lidocaine in the acupoint injection group; After the surround needling, acupoint injection was performed in the combined group. The treatment was given once a day, 14 times for a course, and one course was needed in all groups. The skin healing conditions (blistering, crusting, and dislocation time) of each group were compared after treatment. The pain scores, pain area and quality of life scores in each group were observed before and after treatment. The levels of neuron specific enolase (NSE), substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in the local blister fluid were measured before and after treatment in all groups. RESULTS: The blistering, crusting and dislocation time in the combined group were earlier than the other two groups (all P<0.05). The pain score and pain area in the each group were significantly lower than those before treatment, and the quality of life score was significantly higher than that before treatment (all P<0.05). The improvements of pain score and quality of life score in the combined group were more obvious than the other two groups (all P<0.05). After treatment, the levels of NSE, SP and CGRP in the local blister fluid in each groups were significantly lower than those before treatment (all P<0.05). The indexes in the combined group were significantly lower than those in the other two groups (all P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Both surround needling and acupoint injection have an adjuvant effect on AHN. The combination of the two is better, the skin is healed quickly, the analgesia is significant, and the contents of local NSE, SP and CGRP are significantly decreased. The mechanism of action is to exert neuroprotective effects.

RESUMO

Seaweeds are good bio-monitors of heavy metal pollution and have been included in European coastal monitoring programs. However, data for seaweed species in China are scarce or missing. In this study, we explored the potential of seaweeds as bio-monitor by screening the natural occurring seaweeds in the "Kingdom of seaweed and shellfish" at Dongtou Islands, the East China Sea. Totally, 12 seaweed species were collected from six sites, with richness following the sequence of Rhodophyta > Phaeophyta > Chlorophyta. The concentration of heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cd, As) in the seaweeds was determined, and the bioaccumulation coefficient was calculated. A combination of four seaweeds, Pachydictyon coriaceum, Gelidium divaricatum, Sargassum thunbergii, and Pterocladiella capillacea, were proposed as bio-monitors due to their high bioaccumulation capabilities of specific heavy metals in the East China Sea and hence hinted the importance of using seaweed community for monitoring of pollution rather than single species. Our results provide first-hand data for the selection of bio-monitor species for heavy metals in the East China Sea and contribute to selection of cosmopolitan bio-monitor communities over geographical large area, which will benefit the establishment of monitoring programs for coastal heavy metal contamination.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to explore a method for obtaining sensory nerve action potentials (SNAPs) of the supratrochlear (STN) and supraorbital (SON) nerves and evaluate the function of affected nerves in patients with herpetic ophthalmic neuralgia (HON). METHODS: Thirty healthy volunteers and 40 subjects with subacute HON participated in this study. RESULTS: The amplitudes and sensory conduction velocities (SCVs) that predicted HON were identified. The corresponding cutoff values for the amplitudes ranged from 11.10 µV to 12.45 µV. The corresponding cutoff values for the SCVs ranged from 43.14 m/s to 44.64 m/s. SCVs were markedly lower on the affected side compared with healthy volunteers (P < 0.05), and the amplitudes of SNAPs on the affected side were decreased by 36% compared with healthy volunteers (P < 0.05). DISCUSSION: SCVs of STN and SONs can be obtained with the 3-channel method and used to evaluate myelinated fibers in patients with HON. Muscle Nerve 57: 973-980, 2018.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to qualify the improvements of modified constraint-induced movement therapy (m-CIMT) on the lower limb of stroke patients via assessing the centre of mass (COM) displacement and the basic gait parameters. METHODS: A total of 22 hemiplegic patients after stroke with first-time clinical cerebral infarction or haemorrhagic cerebrovascular accident were included in this study from May to December, 2014. The patients were randomly divided into m-CIMT group and the conventional therapy group (control group), and received corresponding training for five days/week for four weeks. The COM displacement and gait parameters were assessed by three-dimensional segmental kinematics method in pre-intervention and post- intervention therapy. RESULTS: After four weeks of m-CIMT, the COM displacement on sagittal plane of paretic leg during stance phase was increased (pre: 91.04 ± 4.39 cm, post: 92.38 ± 4.58 cm, p < 0.05) and swing range of frontal plane was remarkably decreased (pre: 10.15 ± 3.05 cm, post: 7.83 ± 1.90 cm, p < 0.001). Meantime, the normalised swing range of COM in m-CIMT was superior to that in control group. Moreover, the gait parameters, including velocity (0.27 m/s), step width (0.10 m), step length (0.22 m) and swing time percentage (29.80%), were significantly improved by post-interventions of m-CIMT (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The m-CIMT intervention improves the COM displacement in sagittal and frontal plane, as well as gait parameters. These suggest that m-CIMT intervention may be feasible and effective for the rehabilitation of hemiplegic gait. Implications for Rehabilitation Segmental kinematics method was used to estimate the displacement of the COM. m-CIMT interventions improved the COM displacement of patients after stroke. m-CIMT interventions improved the hemiplegic gait parameters.

RESUMO

The exotic plant Spartina alterniflora was introduced to Yueqing Bay more than 20 years ago for tidal land reclamation and as a defense against typhoons, but it has rapidly expanded and caused enormous ecological consequences. Mapping the spread and distribution of S. alterniflora is the first step toward understanding the factors that determine the population expansion patterns. Remote sensing is a promising tool to monitor the expansion of S. alterniflora. Twelve Landsat TM images and Support Vector Machine (SVM) were used to delineate the invasion of S. alterniflora from 1993 to 2009, and SPOT 6 images and Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) were used to map the distribution of S. alterniflora in 2014. In situ data and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) images were used as supplementary data. S. alterniflora spread rapidly in Yueqing Bay over the past 21 years. Between 1993 and 2009, the area of S. alterniflora increased by 608 times (from 4 to 2432 ha). The rapid expansion of S. alterniflora covered almost all of the bare mudflats around the mangrove forests and the cultivated mudflats. However, from 2009 to 2014, the rate of expansion of S. alterniflora began to slow down in Yueqing Bay, and the total area of S. alterniflora in Yantian decreased by 275 ha. These phenomena can be explained by the landscape changes and ecological niches. Through the expansion of S. alterniflora, it was found that the ecological significance and environmental impact of S. alterniflora was different in different regions in Yueqing Bay. The conservation plans for Yueqing Bay should consider both the positive and negative effects of S. alterniflora, and the governmental policy should be based on the different circumstances of the regions.

RESUMO

Taking Ximen island of Yueqing bay, the biggest tidal range area among the coasts of China, as study site, an investigation was made on the survival rate, growth characteristics, and attached barnacles of 1- and 3-year-old Kandelia candel seedlings at the elevations 1.96, 1.66, 1.35, and 1.03 m above the zero tidal level of Yellow Sea. Significant differences were observed in the survival rate and growth situation of the seedlings among the elevations. There were two barnacle species, Balanus albicostatus and Balanus amphitrite amphitrite, and B. albicostatus was the major species which attached K. candel most seriously at elevation 1.35 m. The critical tidal level for K. candel in the site was 1.66 m above the zero tidal level, i.e., at least 1.29 m higher than the local mean sea level, and the flooding time per tide cycle being less than 3.65 h. Barnacle, strong tide, and extreme weather event were the main reasons for the higher critical tidal level.
