RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) results in brain injury, which is primarily caused by inflammation. Ac2-26 protects against ischemic or hemorrhage brain injury. The present study was to explore the effect and mechanism of Ac2-26 on brain injury in CPB rats. METHODS: Forty-eight rats were randomized into sham, CPB, Ac, Ac/AKT1, Ac/GSK3ßi and Ac/AKT1/GSK3ßa groups. Rats in sham group only received anesthesia and in the other groups received standard CPB surgery. Rats in the sham and CPB groups received saline, and rats in the Ac, Ac/AKT1, Ac/GSK3ßi and Ac/AKT1/GSK3ßa groups received Ac2-26 immediately after CPB. Rats in the Ac/AKT1, Ac/GSK3ßi and Ac/AKT1/GSK3ßa groups were injected with shRNA, inhibitor and agonist of GSK3ß respectively. The neurological function score, brain edema and histological score were evaluated. The neuronal survival and hippocampal pyroptosis were assessed. The cytokines, activity of NF-κB, S100 calcium-binding protein ß(S100ß) and neuron-specific enolase (NSE), and oxidative were tested. The NLRP3, cleaved-caspase-1 and cleaved-gadermin D (GSDMD) in the brain were also detected. RESULTS: Compared to the sham group, all indicators were aggravated in rats that underwent CPB. Compared to the CPB group, Ac2-26 significantly improved neurological scores and brain edema and ameliorated pathological injury. Ac2-26 reduced the local and systemic inflammation, oxidative stress response and promoted neuronal survival. Ac2-26 reduced hippocampal pyroptosis and decreased pyroptotic proteins in brain tissue. The protection of Ac2-26 was notably lessened by shRNA and inhibitor of GSK3ß. The agonist of GSK3ß recovered the protection of Ac2-26 in presence of shRNA. CONCLUSIONS: Ac2-26 significantly improved neurological function, reduced brain injury via regulating inflammation, oxidative stress response and pyroptosis after CPB. The protective effect of Ac2-26 primarily depended on AKT1/ GSK3ß pathway.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Automatic tumor segmentation plays a crucial role in cancer diagnosis and treatment planning. Computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) are extensively employed for their complementary medical information. However, existing methods ignore bilateral cross-modal interaction of global features during feature extraction, and they underutilize multi-stage tumor boundary features. METHODS: To address these limitations, we propose a dual-branch tumor segmentation network based on global cross-modal interaction and boundary guidance in PET/CT images (DGCBG-Net). DGCBG-Net consists of 1) a global cross-modal interaction module that extracts global contextual information from PET/CT images and promotes bilateral cross-modal interaction of global feature; 2) a shared multi-path downsampling module that learns complementary features from PET/CT modalities to mitigate the impact of misleading features and decrease the loss of discriminative features during downsampling; 3) a boundary prior-guided branch that extracts potential boundary features from CT images at multiple stages, assisting the semantic segmentation branch in improving the accuracy of tumor boundary segmentation. RESULTS: Extensive experiments are conducted on STS and Hecktor 2022 datasets to evaluate the proposed method. The average Dice scores of our DGCB-Net on the two datasets are 80.33% and 79.29%, with average IOU scores of 67.64% and 70.18%. DGCB-Net outperformed the current state-of-the-art methods with a 1.77% higher Dice score and a 2.12% higher IOU score. CONCLUSIONS: Extensive experimental results demonstrate that DGCBG-Net outperforms existing segmentation methods, and is competitive to state-of-arts.

RESUMO

Uric acid (UA) monitoring is the most effective method for diagnosis and treatment of gout, hyperuricemia, hypertension, and other diseases. However, challenges remain regarding detection efficiency and rapid on-site detection. Here, we first synthesized a CdS/Au/TiO2-NTAs Z-scheme heterojunction material using a titanium dioxide nanotube array (TiO2-NTAs) as the substrate and modified with gold nanoparticles (Au) and cadmium sulfide particles (CdS). This material achieves bandgap alignment to generate a large number of electron-hole pairs under illumination. Then, using CdS/Au/TiO2-NTAs as the working electrode and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) as the recognition unit, we constructed a portable photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor for non-invasive instant detection of UA concentration in human saliva, which has unique advantages in the field of high-sensitivity PEC instant detection. The portable MIP-PEC sensor achieves a linear range of 0.01-50 µM and a detection limit as low as 5.07 nM (S/N = 3). At the same time, the portable MIP-PEC sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity, specificity as well as stability, and shows no statistically significant difference compared to traditional high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in practical sample detection. Compared to traditional PEC modes, this work demonstrates a novel and universal method for high-sensitivity instant detection in the field of PEC.

RESUMO

Spices have long been popular worldwide. Besides serving as aromatic and flavorful food and cooking ingredients, many spices exhibit notable bioactivity. Quality evaluation methods are essential for ensuring the quality and flavor of spices. However, existing methods typically focus on the content of particular components or certain aspects of bioactivity. For a systematic evaluation of spice quality, we herein propose a comprehensive "quality-quantity-activity" approach based on portable near-infrared spectrometer and membership function analysis. Cinnamomum cassia was used as a representative example to illustrate this approach. Near-infrared spectroscopy and chemometric methods were combined to predict the geographical origin, cinnamaldehyde content, ash content, antioxidant activity, and integrated membership function value. All the optimal prediction models displayed good predictive ability (correlation coefficient of prediction > 0.9, residual predictive deviation > 2.1). The proposed approach can provide a valuable reference for the rapid and comprehensive quality evaluation of spices.

RESUMO

Ozone reactions on human body surfaces produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that influence indoor air quality. However, the dependence of VOC emissions on the ozone concentration has received limited attention. In this study, we conducted 36 sets of single-person chamber experiments with three volunteers exposed to ozone concentrations ranging from 0 to 32 ppb. Emission fluxes from human body surfaces were measured for 11 targeted skin-oil oxidation products. For the majority of these products, the emission fluxes linearly correlated with ozone concentration, indicating a constant surface yield (moles of VOC emitted per mole of ozone deposited). However, for the second-generation oxidation product 4-oxopentanal, a higher surface yield was observed at higher ozone concentrations. Furthermore, many VOCs have substantial emissions in the absence of ozone. Overall, these results suggest that the complex surface reactions and mass transfer processes involved in ozone-dependent VOC emissions from the human body can be represented using a simplified parametrization based on surface yield and baseline emission flux. Values of these two parameters were quantified for targeted products and estimated for other semiquantified VOC signals, facilitating the inclusion of ozone/skin oil chemistry in indoor air quality models and providing new insights on skin oil chemistry.

RESUMO

Iodine deficiency can cause thyroid disease, a serious health problem that has been affecting humans since several years. The biofortification of plants with iodine is an effective strategy for regulating iodine content in humans. In addition, radioiodine released into the atmosphere may contaminate terrestrial ecosystem along with dry or wet deposition and its accumulation in plants may cause exposure risks to humans via food chain. Recent progress in understanding the mechanisms related to iodine uptake, elementary speciation, dynamic transportation, nutritional role, and toxicity in plants is reviewed here. First, we introduced the iodine cycle in a marine-atmosphere-land system. The content and speciation of iodine in plants under natural conditions and biofortification backgrounds were also analyzed. We then discussed the mechanisms of iodine uptake and efflux by plants. The promotion or inhibition effects of iodine on plant growth were also investigated. Finally, the participation of radioiodine in plant growth and its safety risks along the food chain were evaluated. Furthermore, future challenges and opportunities for understanding the participation of iodine in plants have been outlined.

RESUMO

The removal and recovery of uranium (VI) from water solutions are critical for energy and environmental security. In this study, hydrochar at 100, 150, and 190 °C (HC100, HC150, and HC190) and pyrochar at 250 °C (BC250) were prepared from residual sludge (RS). The uranium (VI) adsorption behavior, recovery, and heavy metal risk of RS and its biochars were assessed. The sorption distribution coefficient of RS was higher than those of its biochars within the tested concentration range. The maximum adsorption capacity of uranium (VI) by HC190 was 121.26 mg/g at acidic pH (pH 4.5), which was higher than those of other tested biochars, previously reported unmodified biochars, and activated carbon. The zeta potential, FTIR, and XPS results implied that the adsorption of uranium (VI) by RS and its biochars was regulated by electrostatic attraction and the complexation with oxygen- and phosphorus-containing functional groups. Besides, partial reduction of uranium (VI) into uranium (IV) happened during the process of adsorption. More than 86% of the adsorbed uranium (VI) was recovered by 0.01 M hydrochloric acid and 100% by 0.01 M sodium carbonate. The leaching amount of heavy metals was greatly reduced after the sludge was converted to biochar, indicating that hydrothermal carbonization and pyrolysis can promote the stabilization of heavy metals. This work demonstrates that RS and its biochars can be implemented as low-cost, environment-friendly, and high-efficient materials for the purification of uranium (VI)-containing solutions by means of adsorption and desorption.

RESUMO

Investigation of housing indoor temperature is important for understanding the comfort, health and living conditions of the local residents. The traditional method to measure indoor temperature is to place sensors at the target places, which is not only expensive but also inconvenient for indoor temperature investigation, especially for the investigation at community and city scale. In this study, a novel method was proposed to obtain the indoor temperatures remotely from outside the building through window opening area using and infrared camera. Compared with the traditional contact measurement method, the proposed remote sensing method could detect the indoor temperature without entering the room. Moreover, the infrared image could reflect the spatial distribution information of indoor temperature. To verify the feasibility and accuracy of this method, an experiment was conducted in a test room under heating, transitional, and cooling conditions with various window opening grades. It was found that the infrared images at the window opening area could reflect the spatial distribution of indoor temperature with an accuracy within 0.5 °C under stable heating and transitional conditions. In the fan coil cooling condition, however, although the infrared image can reflect the cold air flow pattern, the deviations between the infrared temperature and the measured room temperature exceeded 1.0 °C. The effect of window opening grade on the recognition accuracy kept within 0.5 °C.
