RESUMO

This paper analyzes Colombian households' vulnerability to multidimensional poverty. For this purpose, we apply the vulnerability as expected poverty approach and the multidimensional poverty index to obtain the probability of a household being poor in the future. The source of information was the Colombian Longitudinal Survey. By employing the Feasible Generalized Least Squares methodology in three stages, the results indicate that the percentage of vulnerable households is greater than the percentage of poor households. In addition, the pattern of vulnerability differs depending on the area (i.e., rural or urban) in which the households are located. These findings have important policy implications; specifically, they enable us to distinguish between groups of people that require particular policy strategies: households that are persistently poor require poverty alleviation interventions and those that are not poor, but have a high probability of becoming poor in the future, need poverty prevention strategies.

RESUMO

This study provides detailed information on socially disadvantaged women and their households in Buenaventura, Colombia. A representative sample for 400 women aged between 18 and 70 was prepared and their living conditions were accessed based on the sociodemographic data and economic and social dynamics of their households. It gives special attention to access to poverty alleviation programs - conditional cash transfers - and forms of agency propelling women towards social change. The data were collected in July 2019 through in-person interviews. The database can greatly contribute toward further comparative research, informing public policy, and more broadly, widening the universe of statistical data on Colombia and other Latin American countries by providing quantitative data on welfare dependence, intragenerational pathways of social mobility, and changes in reproductive strategies and the political culture of women with respect to urban precarity. Fundación WWB Colombia and Universidad Icesi sponsored data collection as part of the project entitled "Analysis of the relationships between gender constructions and welfare programs in southwest Colombia".

RESUMO

In this article, we describe the data set on theconditions for women's autonomy in the municipalities of Cali, Buenaventura, Yumbo, and Jamundí (Colombia). The database was developed by the Observatoriopara la Equidad de las Mujeres (OEM), an entity resulting from an alliancebetween Universidad Icesi and Fundación WWB Colombia. The OEM's purpose is toconstruct measurements that make it possible to account for women's autonomy, based on three main dimensions: physical autonomy (associated with aspects ofpersonal and family life), economic and financial autonomy (the type of work, income, decision-making with respect to these aspects, entrepreneurship orbusiness units, among others), and leadership and public participation(electoral practices, type of participation, relation to institutions, etc.),while fundamentally, considering women's capacity to make decisions onthese  aspects, based on both theirperception and their actions. As well as helping to overcome the limitations ofexisting information, this primary data collection is aimed at generatingvalid, reliable and high-quality inputs to formulate local and national publicpolicies to improve the living conditions of women in Colombia's Pacificregion. The survey, designed and applied by the OEM, was first implemented inOctober and November 2018 through multi-stage probability sampling. The samplesize was 1,507 women in the four mentioned municipalities.

RESUMO

This study aims to identify factors associated with the probability of trash pickers feeling physically or mentally ill and assesses differences by gender. To achieve these, we estimated multivariate regression models by using data from a census' update of 3109 trash pickers in Cali-Colombia in 2015. Outcomes are defined by two binary variables for whether the trash picker reports 14 or more days during the last month with physical and mental illness. Factors included demographic, family, psychological, socioeconomic and job characteristics. We found gender differences in several risk factors. Also a strong link between physical and mental health was found. Trash picker women are more vulnerable than men, public policy interventions aimed at prevention and treatment of mental health problems will have a positive side effect on their physical and mental health.

RESUMO

This data article describes two data sets about the socioeconomic conditions of recyclers in Cali, the third largest city in Colombia, South America. Data collected were aimed at understanding the social and economic conditions of this population in order to provide information for crafting policy alternatives for poverty alleviation. Information was collected in two waves in 2013 and in 2015. The first data collection (2013) was focused on a subgroup of recyclers and the second data collection (2015) was a census. In total, more than 3000 direct surveys to recyclers were conducted at individual and family level. In both data collection rounds, information about socioeconomic factors, health, working conditions, access to welfare programs and family composition was gathered. Both data rounds were financed by the local government as an input to design policy interventions to improve the recyclers' quality of life in the city. The data of this manuscript is associated with the publication (Estrada et al., 2017).
