RESUMO

UNLABELLED: The longevity and durability of composite resins are influenced by the actions of water, saliva, drinks, food and features of the oral environment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of mouthwashes containing alcohol on the surface hardness, sorption and solubility of composite resins. METHODS: Disc-shaped specimens were prepared with two composite resins Z250 (Z2) and Z350XT (Z3). Measurements of Vickers hardness were performed before and after immersion in Plax, PerioGard, Listerine, ethanol and distilled water for 12 h at 37°C, followed by a further 12 h at 37°C in artificial saliva. Sorption and solubility were performed according to ISO 4049. Data were analysed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α=0.05). RESULTS: None of the mouthwashes significantly reduced the hardness of the resin Z2 (p>0.05). The greatest change in resin Z3 hardness was produced by PerioGard (p<0.01). Plax produced the lowest changes in the sorption and solubility of resins Z2 and Z3 (p<0.01), followed by Listerine and PerioGard. CONCLUSIONS: The sorption and solubility properties of the composite resins were more altered by mouthwashes than the surface hardness.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of ectopic eruption of intranasal teeth. DESIGN: This was a retrospective study, where records of children with repaired cleft lip and palate were analyzed. SETTING: The study was conducted at a large craniofacial center, the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies, USP, Bauru, São Paulo, Brazil. SUBJECTS: The sample consisted of 815 records from patients with bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) and 1,495 records from patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). The age of the subjects was 5 to 10 years old and the groups included both males and females. RESULTS: The results showed that 0.61% of the children with BCLP and 0.40% of those with UCLP had an intranasal tooth. The prevalence of an intranasal tooth for the whole group was 0.48%, and it appeared to be more common in females.

RESUMO

Many dentists refuse to offer dental assistance to cleft lip and palate patients because they lack understanding about this malformation and do not want to make a professional mistake with the anesthesia. The aim of this work is to guide clinical practitioners, who want to work with these patients about the anatomical features of the cleft lip and palate area and the implications in the anesthetic procedures.

RESUMO

The phylogenetically conserved nuclear factor I (NFI) family of transcription/replication proteins is essential both for adenoviral DNA replication and for the transcription of many cellular genes. We showed previously that the four murine NFI genes (Nfia, Nfib, Nfic, and Nfix) are expressed in unique but overlapping patterns during mouse development and in adult tissues. Here we show that disruption of the Nfia gene causes perinatal lethality, with >95% of homozygous Nfia(-/-) animals dying within 2 weeks after birth. Newborn Nfia(-/-) animals lack a corpus callosum and show ventricular dilation indicating early hydrocephalus. Rare surviving homozygous Nfia(-/-) mice lack a corpus callosum, show severe communicating hydrocephalus, a full-axial tremor indicative of neurological defects, male-sterility, low female fertility, but near normal life spans. These findings indicate that while the Nfia gene appears nonessential for cell viability and DNA replication in embryonic stem cells and fibroblasts, loss of Nfia function causes severe developmental defects. This finding of an NFI gene required for a developmental process suggests that the four NFI genes may have distinct roles in vertebrate development.

RESUMO

Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viciae-secreted Nod factors are able to induce root hair deformation, the formation of nodule primordia and the expression of early nodulin genes in Vicia sativa (vetch). To obtain more insight into the mode of action of Nod factors the expression of early nodulin genes was followed during Nod factor-induced root hair deformation and nodule primordium formation. The results of these studies suggested that the expression of VsENOD5 and VsENOD12 is not required for root hair deformation. In the Nod factor-induced primordia both VsENOD12 and VsENOD40 are expressed in a spatially controlled manner similar to that found in Rhizobium-induced nodule primordia. In contrast, VsENOD5 expression has never been observed in Nod factor-induced primordia, showing that the induction of VsENOD5 and VsENOD12 expression are not coupled. VsENOD5 expression is induced in the root epidermis by Nod factors and in Rhizobium-induced nodule primordia only in cells infected by the bacteria, suggesting that the Nod factor does not reach the inner cortical cells.
