Underwater long-endurance platforms are crucial for continuous oceanic observation, allowing for sustained data collection from a multitude of sensors deployed across diverse underwater environments. They extend mission durations, reduce maintenance needs, and significantly improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of oceanographic research endeavors. This paper investigates the closed-loop depth control of actuation systems employed in underwater vehicles, focusing on the energy consumption of two different mechanisms: variable buoyancy and propeller actuated devices. Using a prototype previously developed by the authors, this paper presents a detailed model of the vehicle using both actuation solutions. The proposed model, although being a linear-based one, accounts for several nonlinearities that are present such as saturations, sensor quantization, and the actuator brake model. Also, it allows a simple estimation of the energy consumption of both actuation solutions. Based on the developed models, this study then explores the intricate interplay between energy consumption and control accuracy. To this end, several PID-based controllers are developed and tested in simulation. These controllers are used to evaluate the dynamic response and power requirements of variable buoyancy systems and propeller actuated devices under various operational conditions. Our findings contribute to the optimization of closed-loop depth control strategies, offering insights into the trade-offs between energy efficiency and system effectiveness in diverse underwater applications.

The attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) is an important concept in the area of navigation, image stabilization, and object detection and tracking. Many studies and works have been conducted in this regard to estimate the accurate orientation of rigid bodies. In most research in this area, low-cost MEMS sensors are employed, but since the system's response will diverge over time due to integration drift, it is necessary to apply proper estimation algorithms. A two-step extended Kalman Filter (EKF) algorithm is used in this study to estimate the orientation of an IMU. A 9-DOF device is used for this purpose, including a 6-DOF IMU with a three-axis gyroscope and a three-axis accelerometer, and a three-axis magnetometer. In addition, to have an accurate algorithm, both IMU and magnetometer biases and disturbances are modeled and considered in the real-time filter. After applying the algorithm to the sensor's output, an accurate orientation as well as unbiased angular velocity, linear acceleration, and magnetic field were achieved. In order to demonstrate the reduction of noise power, fast Fourier transform (FFT) diagrams are used. The effect of the initial condition on the response of the system is also investigated.

Cannabis cultivation for medical purposes in Brazil has been increased in the last years. While cannabis crops are prohibited, hundreds patients have been granted with judicial authorizations and there is little information about the cultivation conditions, yields and chemical profiles of the plants. Cannabis plants contain hundreds of compounds, with cannabinoids and terpenes the main drivers of their toxicological and pharmacological properties. Besides the cannabinoids, terpene contents are useful for the chemotaxonomic classification of different varieties, and their role in forensic analyses should be further delineated. The present study monitored cannabis crops of fifteen participants who were granted special licenses by the Brazilian Courts in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The cultivation conditions were monitored and five cannabinoids (tetrahydrocannabinol acid-THCA, tetrahydrocannabinol-THC, cannabidiolic acid-CBDA, cannabidiol-CBD and cannabinol-CBN) and nineteen terpenes were quantified in cannabis flowers. The total grow cycle of thirty-five cannabis plants ranged from 10 to 24 weeks. The dry flower yields ranged 22-90 g per plant. Most cannabis specimens were CBD-rich varieties (CBD levels from 1.6% to 16.7%, and THC levels from 0.0% to 2.6%, n = 22) used to treat epileptic patients. The THC-rich varieties contained CBD levels ranging from 0.03% to 0.8%, and THC levels from 0.7% to 20.1%, n = 11. Fewer of the samples contained THC:CBD ratios of approximately 1:1 (CBD levels of 3.3-3.8% and THC levels of 2.2-3.7%, n = 2). The most abundant terpenes in the cannabis flowers were beta-caryophyllene, alpha-humulene, guaiol and alpha-bisabolol. CBD-rich varieties showed significant higher levels of beta-caryophyllene and alpha-humulene in comparison with THC-rich varieties. Overall, the study herein provides data concerning medical cannabis crops grown in a region of Brazil that not only guide individual medical cannabis cultivation methods but also aid forensic analyses.

The assessment of the adequacy of general anesthesia for surgery, namely the nociception/anti-nociception balance, has received wide attention from the scientific community. Monitoring systems based on the frontal EEG/EMG, or autonomic state reactions (e.g. heart rate and blood pressure) have been developed aiming to objectively assess this balance. In this study a new multivariate indicator of patients' steady-state during anesthesia (STAN) is proposed, based on wavelet analysis of signals linked to noxious activation. A clinical protocol was designed to analyze precise noxious stimuli (laryngoscopy/intubation, tetanic, and incision), under three different analgesic doses; patients were randomized to receive either remifentanil 2.0, 3.0 or 4.0 ng/ml. ECG, PPG, BP, BIS, EMG and [Formula: see text] were continuously recorded. ECG, PPG and BP were processed to extract beat-to-beat information, and [Formula: see text] curve used to estimate the respiration rate. A combined steady-state index based on wavelet analysis of these variables, was applied and compared between the three study groups and stimuli (Wilcoxon signed ranks, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests). Following institutional approval and signing the informed consent thirty four patients were enrolled in this study (3 excluded due to signal loss during data collection). The BIS index of the EEG, frontal EMG, heart rate, BP, and PPG wave amplitude changed in response to different noxious stimuli. Laryngoscopy/intubation was the stimulus with the more pronounced response [Formula: see text]. These variables were used in the construction of the combined index STAN; STAN responded adequately to noxious stimuli, with a more pronounced response to laryngoscopy/intubation (18.5-43.1 %, [Formula: see text]), and the attenuation provided by the analgesic, detecting steady-state periods in the different physiological signals analyzed (approximately 50 % of the total study time). A new multivariate approach for the assessment of the patient steady-state during general anesthesia was developed. The proposed wavelet based multivariate index responds adequately to different noxious stimuli, and attenuation provided by the analgesic in a dose-dependent manner for each stimulus analyzed in this study.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) have been linked to noxious activation and stimulus intensity. In this exploratory study we investigated the impact of anaesthetic drugs on SEPs and pain ratings, to assess their applicability as an objective measure of the nociception/anti-nociception balance. Following institutional approval and written informed consent, 10 healthy adult volunteers were enrolled (29.5 ± 9.1 years, 63.0 ± 8.9 kg and 171.4 ± 7.2). Median nerve electrical stimulation was adjusted according to volunteers' sensitive, motor and painful thresholds (PT). Baseline SEPs were registered, and remifentanil and propofol administered using a stair scheme TCI. For each drug combination a 1.3×PT stimulus was administered, and volunteers evaluated pain intensity in a numerical rating scale (0-10). SEPs' amplitudes and latencies were normalized by the baseline values, reducing volunteers' intervariability. Stimulation currents varied between 6-52 mA (1.3×PT) and pain ratings between 0 and 9. Cortical SEPs latencies were decreased for higher stimulus intensities (P < 0.01), accompanied by increased pain ratings (P < 0.01). An individually adjusted/normalized ratio based on cortical SEPs amplitude and interpeak latency is proposed([Formula: see text]): [Formula: see text] and NSR were significantly correlated in three out of nine subjects, and [Formula: see text] and remifentanil Ce were significantly correlated in two (low number of evaluation points). [Formula: see text] was shown to decrease with increasing doses of propofol and remifentanil (P < 0.05). The proposed metric was depressed by anaesthetics and reflected pain evaluations. Further research is necessary to increase the number of volunteers and drugs' combination, to assess its applicability during surgically adequate anesthetic leves.
