This investigation aimed to assess if alternative method to estimate the maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAODalt) can detect changes in energy system contribution in different substrate availabilities. Following a graded exercise test to determine maximal oxygen uptake intensity (iVO2max), 26 recreational runners performed a time to exhaustion effort (TTE) as baseline at 110% iVO2max. The same TTE was performed in fasting state, then, a muscle glycogen depletion protocol was executed. Subsequently, participants received low-carbohydrate diet and beverage containing high (H-CHO, 10.8±2.1g·kg-1), moderate (M-CHO, 5.6±1.1g·kg-1), or zero (Z-CHO, 0.24±0.05g·kg-1) carbohydrate. Another TTE was performed 24h later. Each energy system contribution was assessed. Generalized linear mixed models were used for statistical analysis (p<0.05). H-CHO increased relative anaerobic capacity (slope effect [baseline-intervention]x[H-CHO-M-CHO]) due to the relative lactic contribution maintenance (slope effect [baseline-intervention]x[H-CHO-Z-CHO] or [H-CHO-M-CHO]) and increase in relative alactic contribution (6.3±3.5kJ·min-1). The aerobic contribution was lower (-8.7±4.0kJ·min-1), decreasing performance (-34±16s) for H-CHO. M-CHO and Z-CHO maintained anaerobic capacity due to increase in alactic contribution (slope effect [fasting-intervention]x[M-CHO-H-CHO]; and Z-CHO was 7.3±3.4kJ·min-1 higher than baseline). Fasting increased relative alactic (2.9±1.7kJ·min-1) but decreased aerobic contribution (-3.3±2.3kJ·min-1), impairing performance (-17±12s). In conclusion, MAODalt can detect changes in energy system supply in different nutritional states. Therefore, participant's nutritional state must be considered prior to conducting the test.

INTRODUCTION: Insulin is the first-line pharmacologic therapy for women with diabetes in pregnancy. However, conducting well-designed randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and achieving recommended glycemic targets remains a challenge for this unique population. This systematic literature review (SLR) aimed to understand the evidence for insulin use in pregnancy and the outcome metrics most often used to characterize its effect on glycemic, maternal and fetal outcomes in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and in pregnant women with diabetes. METHODS: An SLR was conducted using electronic databases in Medline, EMBASE via Ovid platform, evidence-based medicine reviews (2010-2020) and conference proceedings (2018-2019). Studies were included if they assessed the effect of insulin treatment on glycemic, maternal or fetal outcomes in women with diabetes in pregnancy. Studies on any type of diabetes other than gestational or pre-existing diabetes as well as non-human studies were excluded. RESULTS: In women diagnosed with GDM or pre-existing diabetes, most studies compared treatment of insulin with metformin (n = 35) followed by diet along with lifestyle intervention (n = 24) and glibenclamide (n = 12). Most studies reporting on glycemic outcomes compared insulin with metformin (n = 22) and glibenclamide (n = 4). Fasting blood glucose was the most reported clinical outcome of interest. Among the studies reporting maternal outcomes, method of delivery and delivery complications were most commonly reported. Large for gestational age, stillbirth and perinatal mortality were the most common fetal outcomes reported. CONCLUSION: This SLR included a total of 108 clinical trials and observational studies with diverse populations and treatment arms. Outcomes varied across the studies, and a lack of consistent outcome measures to manage diabetes in pregnant women was observed. This elucidates a need for global consensus on study design and standardized clinical, maternal and fetal outcomes metrics.

RESUMO

This short review presents the latest advances in the field of electrochemical biosensors, focusing particularly on impedimetric biosensors for the direct measurement of analytes. As a source of study we have chosen to describe these advances in the latest global health crisis originated from the COVID-19 pandemic, initiated by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In this period, the necessity for swift and precise detection methods has grown rapidly due to an imminent need for the development of an analytical method to identify and isolate infected patients as an attempt to control the spreading of the disease. Traditional approaches such as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), were extensively used during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, but their drawbacks, including slow response time, became evident. In this context, the potential of electrochemical biosensors as an alternative for COVID-19 detection was emphasized. These biosensors merge electrochemical technology with bioreceptors, offering benefits such as rapidity, accuracy, portability, and real-time result provision. Additionally, we present instances of electrochemical biosensors modified with conductive polymers, eliminating the necessity for an electrochemical probe. The adaptability of the developed materials and devices facilitated the prompt production of electrochemical biosensors during the pandemic, creating opportunities for broader applications in infectious disease diagnosis.

This study aimed to characterize 300 Aeromonas spp. strains isolated from 123 ornamental fish of 32 different species presenting with septicemia, skin lesions, and/or eye lesions. Within the 300 strains, 53.0% were identified as A. veronii, 41.3% as A. hydrophila, and 5.7% as A. caviae. Among the six virulence genes investigated, the most frequent were act (90.3%) and aer (79.3%). More than 50% of A. hydrophila strains were positive for all the studied genes. A total of 30 virulence profiles were identified, with the five main profiles identified comprising 75% of strains. Only five strains were negative for all genes and were identified as A. caviae and A. veronii. The antimicrobial susceptibility profile was performed for 234 strains, with sulfonamides presenting more than 50% of the resistance rates. Susceptibility was observed mainly for cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, chloramphenicol and piperacillin-tazobactam. Multidrug resistance was detected in 82.5% of the studied strains, including A. caviae with 100% multidrug resistance, and A. hydrophila with 90.9% multidrug resistance. The SE-AFLP analysis resulted in 66 genotypes of A. hydrophila, 118 genotypes of A. veronii, and 14 genotypes of A. caviae, demonstrating the greater heterogeneity of A. veronii and A. caviae. However, no direct correlation was observed between the genotypes and the strains' origins or virulence and resistance profiles.

The main difficulty for the cultivation and conservation of bromeliad species is the reduced number of propagules and slow growth of many of the species, resulting in a low propagation efficiency. Bromeliad plants are hardy and relatively easy to cultivate, with a high ornamental and ecological importance. Aiming at efficient micropropagation rates of V. hieroglyphica, a highly valued bromeliad, with very low propagation efficiency, a temporary immersion system was used and compared to semisolid and liquid static medium. Cultures obtained from in vitro germinated seeds were used as explants, maintaining their genetic diversity. Micropropagation with this simple temporary immersion system, composed of two autoclavable flasks, each with one opening for the attachment of 22 µm syringe filters, connected by a rubber stopper and an inner glass tube. In the bottom flask, an air valve is attached to the filter, which is subsequently connected to an aquarium pump and a timer and plugged to an outlet. This simple temporary immersion system showed improved micropropagation efficiency and is a method that can also be evaluated for other species.

RESUMO

The use of temporary immersion systems (TIS) for plant micropropagation is an efficient technique for plant production, and we have applied it for the production of alstroemerias. This method involves the cultivation of explants such as rhizomes and axillary buds in a nutrient medium to stimulate shoot growth. TIS offer advantages such as accelerated multiplication processes, uniform production, and cost reduction. This process has shown promise in meeting the growing demand for alstroemeria plants in the market. This chapter describes a specific protocol for temporary immersion bioreactor micropropagation of the "Albatroz" cultivar, with the potential for large-scale automation.

Natural substances are strategic candidates for drug development in cancer research. Marine-derived molecules are of special interest due to their wide range of biological activities and sustainable large-scale production. Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that originates from genetic mutations in melanocytes. BRAF, RAS, and NF1 mutations are described as the major melanoma drivers, but approximately 20% of patients lack these mutations and are included in the triple wild-type (tripleWT) classification. Recent advances in targeted therapy directed at driver mutations along with immunotherapy have only partially improved patients' overall survival, and consequently, melanoma remains deadly when in advanced stages. Fucose-containing sulfated polysaccharides (FCSP) are potential candidates to treat melanoma; therefore, we investigated Fucan A, a FCSP from Spatoglossum schröederi brown seaweed, in vitro in human melanoma cell lines presenting different mutations. Up to 72 h Fucan A treatment was not cytotoxic either to normal melanocytes or melanoma cell lines. Interestingly, it was able to impair the tripleWT CHL-1 cell proliferation (57%), comparable to the chemotherapeutic cytotoxic drug cisplatin results, with the advantage of not causing cytotoxicity. Fucan A increased CHL-1 doubling time, an effect attributed to cell cycle arrest. Vascular mimicry, a close related angiogenesis process, was also impaired (73%). Fucan A mode of action could be related to gene expression modulation, in special ß-catenin downregulation, a molecule with protagonist roles in important signaling pathways. Taken together, results indicate that Fucan A is a potential anticancer molecule and, therefore, deserves further investigation.

The 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, present in pilosebaceous units, plays a crucial role in the appearance of cutaneous hyperandrogenism manifestations (hirsutism, acne, and androgenetic alopecia). Its inhibition is an excellent strategy to reverse these conditions. Given the limitations of existing treatments, with transient effects and delayed therapeutic response, as well as the possibility of causing undesirable side effects, this study sought to develop new drug delivery systems to overcome these limitations. In other words, innovative stimuli-responsive hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized using silica/natural polysaccharides, encapsulating 5-alpha-reductase enzyme inhibitors derived from the plant Stryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) Coville (commonly known as 'Barbatimão'). Silica core was synthesized by the modified Stöber method. The pH responsive polysaccharides used to coat the porous silica cores were chitosan, and sodium alginate, this coating was carried out using the Layer-by-Layer technique. The hybrid nanoparticles were characterized at molecular and physical-chemical levels. Furthermore, encapsulation efficiency, pH-dependent release behavior, and cytotoxicity were evaluated. Amorphous mesoporous structure with adequate size for follicular delivery (between 300 and 600 nm) in addition to effective phytocompound loading capacity, above 80 % was obtained. Based on the release studies, it was possible to observe pH responsiveness. The ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) obtained from "Barbatimão" bark extract was released in a controlled and more efficient manner by the alginate-coated nanoparticle (SNP_EAF_SA) at pH 7.4, which corresponds to the pH at the deepest area of hair follicles. Furthermore, SNP_EAF_SA proved to be less cytotoxic compared to EAF and chitosan-coated hybrid nanoparticles (SNP_EAF_CH). Characterization, release, and cytotoxicity results indicate that SNP_EAF_SA is a promising system for on-demand follicular delivery of antiandrogenic actives contained in EAF.

AIMS: To investigate contributions of changes in fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and postprandial glucose (PPG) to changes in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and time-in-range (TIR, 70-180 mg/dL) in people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) treated with multiple daily injections (MDI) of insulin lispro (rapid/ultra-rapid formulations). METHODS: Multivariate regression models were used to quantify the contributions of FPG and PPG reductions to change in HbA1c and TIR using data from the PRONTO-T1D (N = 1222) and PRONTO-T2D (N = 673) clinical trials. TIR was derived from 10-point self-monitored blood glucose (SMBG) profiles overall, as well as from continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in the PRONTO-T1D CGM substudy (n = 269/1222). RESULTS: A 1 mmol/L FPG reduction corresponded with a 0.09-0.12 % (95 % confidence interval [CI] 0.06-0.15 %) HbA1c reduction in PRONTO-T1D and 0.17-0.26 % (95 % CI 0.13-0.30 %) in PRONTO-T2D (both p < 0.0001). A 1 mmol/L PPG reduction corresponded with a 0.05-0.09 % (95 % CI 0.01-0.12 %) HbA1c reduction in PRONTO-T1D (p < 0.001) and 0.10-0.15 % (95 % CI 0.05-0.19 %) in PRONTO-T2D (p < 0.0001). Reductions in FPG and PPG were significantly associated with increased TIR whether derived from SMBG (7.87-12.95 % [95 % CI 6.81-14.23 %]; all p < 0.0001) or CGM (3.35-4.18 % [95 % CI 2.11-5.39 %]; all p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: FPG and PPG significantly impact HbA1c and TIR. Balanced management of both FPG and PPG is important to achieve glycemic goals for people with diabetes on MDI insulin therapy. The regulation of metastasis-related cellular aspects of two structurally similar AGIs from prunes tea infusion, with different molar masses, was studied in vitro against Triple Wild-Type metastatic melanoma (TWM) from murine and human origin. The higher molar mass AGI (AGI-78KDa) induced TWMs cells death and, in murine cell line, it decreased some metastasis-related cellular processes: invasiveness capacity, cell-extracellular matrix interaction, and colonies sizes. The lower molar mass AGI (AGI-12KDa) did not induce cell death but decreased TWMs proliferation rate and, in murine cell line, it decreased cell adhesion and colonies sizes. Both AGIs alter the clonogenic capacity of human cell line. In spite to understand why we saw so many differences between AGIs effects on murine and human cell lines we performed in silico analysis that demonstrated differential gene expression profiles between them. Complementary network topological predictions suggested that AGIs can modulate multiple pathways in a specie-dependent manner, which explain differential results obtained in vitro between cell lines. Our results pointed to therapeutic potential of AGIs from prunes tea against TWMs and showed that molecular weight of AGIs may influence their antitumor effects.

Secretory structures in plants play a crucial role in producing bioactive compounds. Despite the potential of the Swartzia genus, comprehensive studies in this context are still scarce. Swartzia is a legume tree (Fabaceae) that occurs in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, a biodiversity hotspot, and includes species such as Swartzia flaemingii. Therefore, we aim to achieve: (1) identify and characterize the key secretory sites responsible for saponin production in S. flaemingii leaflets; (2) confirm the presence of saponins in S. flaemingii leaves by comparing them with known chemical profiles of other Swartzia species; (3) assess the potential hemolytic and cytotoxic effects of crude leaf extracts. Our investigation unveils the presence of phenolic idioblasts, mucilage cells, and articulate laticifers, which play pivotal roles in defense and adaptation. Notably, we report the first-ever ultrastructural details of laticifers in a legume species. Additionally, oleanane-type saponins were identified in the leaves, giving insights into the chemotaxonomic profile of Swartzia. The crude extracts show low cytotoxicity levels, showcasing as a promising alternative source of saponins. This investigation reinforces the importance of conserving plants in threatened regions like the Atlantic Forest, a global biodiversity hotspot facing substantial anthropogenic pressures.

This study aimed to review systematically the literature about the antimicrobial action of evaluated cleansers on the Co-Cr alloy of RPD. The search was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Lilacs, Embase and Science Direct May, 2022. The review was performed based on PRISMA guidelines and recorded in Open Science Framework. Independent reviewers performed the search, selection, extraction, and analysis of the data. The risk of bias of the in vitro and clinical trials studies was analyzed by the Joanna Briggs Institute tool. A total of 187 articles were found and 9 were included. The cleansers that showed antimicrobial action were 2% and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, 0.12% chlorhexidine and NitrAdine effervescent tablet. Polident, Corega Tabs effervescent tablets and 5 mg/mL chitosan solution showed intermediate effects. Propolis and green tea toothpaste were not effective. Three articles presented a high risk of bias and 6, low risk. The cleansers that showed the highest antimicrobial efficacy on Co-Cr alloy were 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate and NitrAdine and can be safely used on RPD framework.

ABSTRACT: Based on the effectiveness of resveratrol and curcumin in carcinogenesis, (E)-3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-N'-((E)-4-methoxybenzylidene) acrylohydrazide (PQM-162), curcumin-resveratrol hybrid derivative, was designed by molecular hybridization using a hydrazone functionality as a spacer moiety between pharmacophoric fragments inspired by the parent compounds. OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to evaluate the chemopreventive effects of the hybrid against pre-neoplastic lesions induced in the colon of rodents. METHODS: The doses were determined based on the reduction in DNA damage induced by doxorubicin [15 mg/kg body weight (b.w.)] in peripheral blood of Swiss mice. Doses of 8, 16, 32, and 64 mg/kg b.w. were antimutagenic. For the evaluation of pre-neoplastic lesions in the colon, Wistar rats were treated with PQM-162 at doses of 0.5, 1, and 2 mg/kg b.w. for 6 weeks using three approaches: simultaneous treatment, pre-treatment, and post-treatment. Pre-neoplastic lesions were induced with 1,2 dimethylhydrazine (160 mg/kg b.w.). KEY FINDINGS: PQM-162 reduced the formation of aberrant crypt foci in the simultaneous treatment and post-treatment. TNF-α and COX-2 mRNA levels decreased, while Nrf2 mRNA levels increased. PQM-162 also reduced the expression of COX-2, PCNA, and ß-catenin protein markers and increased Nrf2 expression. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest a chemopreventive potential of PQM-162 in colorectal carcinogenesis, which acts on anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cell proliferation pathways.

Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), an enzyme primarily found in the liver, plasma, and brain, has been recognized for its role in the hydrolysis of choline esters. Recent studies have shed light on its involvement in lipid metabolism, revealing its potential as a crucial player in maintaining lipid homeostasis. However, the interactions between external factors and BChE activity in lipid metabolic pathways remain a complex subject of study. This review summarizes the current knowledge regarding BChE activity and lipid metabolism and seeks to clarify the nature of this relationship as causal or consequential. Evidence supports the role of BChE in energy homeostasis disruption, such as obesity and related metabolic disorders, where it exhibits lipolytic activity and mediates fatty acid use and storage. The unexpected functions of BChE in lipoprotein synthesis and the impact of polymorphic variants of the BCHE gene suggest a central role in lipid metabolism; however, further investigation is needed to confirm and describe these functions, especially considering the metabolic context. Furthermore, exploring therapeutic interventions in lipid metabolism disorders contributes to elucidating their implications on BChE activity, but attention to the metabolic status and genotypes as possible factors in this interaction is needed. In summary, further research in this field holds promise for improving our understanding of the complex interplay between BChE and lipid metabolism, and its potential clinical applications. However, the available data corroborate the dual role of BChE activity, both as a critical responsive element to metabolic challenges and as a predisposition factor to metabolic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Older adults, particularly in long-term care facilities (LTCF), remain at considerable risk from SARS-CoV-2. Data on the protective effect and mechanisms of hybrid immunity are skewed towards young adults precluding targeted vaccination strategies. METHODS: A single-centre longitudinal seroprevalence vaccine response study was conducted with 280 LCTF participants (median 82 yrs, IQR 76-88 yrs; 95.4% male). Screening by SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction with weekly asymptomatic/symptomatic testing (March 2020-October 2021) and serology pre-/post-two-dose Pfizer-BioNTech BNT162b2 vaccination for (i) anti-nucleocapsid, (ii) quantified anti-receptor binding domain (RBD) antibodies at three time-intervals, (iii) pseudovirus neutralisation, and (iv) inhibition by anti-RBD competitive ELISA were conducted. Neutralisation activity: antibody titre relationship was assessed via beta linear-log regression and RBD antibody-binding inhibition: post-vaccine infection relationship by Wilcoxon rank sum test. RESULTS: Here we show neutralising antibody titres are 9.2-fold (95% CI 5.8-14.5) higher associated with hybrid immunity (p < 0.00001); +7.5-fold (95% CI 4.6-12.1) with asymptomatic infection; +20.3-fold, 95% (CI 9.7-42.5) with symptomatic infection. A strong association is observed between antibody titre: neutralising activity (p < 0.00001) and rising anti-RBD antibody titre: RBD antibody-binding inhibition (p < 0.001), although 18/169 (10.7%) participants with high anti-RBD titre (>100BAU/ml), show inhibition <75%. Higher RBD antibody-binding inhibition values are associated with hybrid immunity and reduced likelihood of infection (p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Hybrid immunity in older adults was associated with considerably higher antibody titres, neutralisation and inhibition capacity. Instances of high anti-RBD titre with lower inhibition suggests antibody quantity and quality as independent potential correlates of protection, highlighting added value of measuring inhibition over antibody titre alone to inform vaccine strategy.


Older adults continue to be at risk of COVID-19, particularly in residential care home settings. We investigated the effect of infection and vaccination on antibody development and subsequent SARS-CoV-2 infection in older adults. Antibodies are proteins that the immune system produces on infection or vaccination that can help respond to subsequent infection with SARS-CoV-2. We found that older adults produce antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 after 2-doses of Pfizer BioNTech BNT162b2 vaccine. The strongest immune responses were seen among those older adults who also had prior history of infection. The results highlight the importance of both antibody quality and quantity when considering possible indicators of protection against COVID-19 and supports the need for a third, booster, vaccination in this age group..

Malnutrition is recognized as one of the main public health problems in hospitals. The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) has established a global consensus on the criteria for diagnosing malnutrition in adults in hospital settings. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of the GLIM criteria as a tool to identify malnutrition in hospital settings and to compare the prevalence of malnutrition identified by GLIM criteria with that identified by other screening and/or nutrition assessment methods. This was a systematic review. Searches were performed using MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and Virtual Health Library, based on established descriptors. The included studies were observational and used screening and/or nutrition assessment tools to compare the prevalence of malnutrition and predictive capacity identified by GLIM criteria in patients aged >18 years in hospital settings. Twelve studies were included in this systematic review. A total of 4066 individuals with different pathologies and clinical conditions participated in the included studies. The prevalence of malnutrition, according to the GLIM criteria, ranged from 16% to 80%. In four studies, the prevalence of malnutrition based on GLIM was higher than that based on the other indicators. Six studies that evaluated the predictive ability of GLIM criteria identified satisfactory sensitivity and specificity. Four studies found low to high agreement between GLIM and the other methods. GLIM criteria can identify malnutrition and find a high prevalence and severity of malnutrition in the hospital setting, proving them to be a sensitive and specific instrument, with good agreement between screening and nutrition assessment methods.

O objetivo deste artigo é investigar o conhecimento produzido por enfermeiros, relacionado à sistematização da assistência de enfermagem e à criança hospitalizada. Trata-se de uma revisão narrativa de literatura com abordagem qualitativa, exploratória e retrospectiva. Esta revisão foi realizada no segundo semestre de 2021, por meio de buscas em acervos de revistas acessados via Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde Pública, e os manuscritos selecionados passaram por leituras de modo sequencial, conforme a proposta de análise de conteúdo de Bardin. Os periódicos selecionados foram publicados no intervalo de 2017 a 2021. Nesta pesquisa, dos periódicos que tiveram publicações incluídas, 42,85% pertencem ao qualis B1, o qualis B2 e A2 representam 21,42% cada, e os qualis A1 e B3 equivalem a 7,14% cada. Em relação à região de publicação, as que mais contribuíram numericamente foram o Sudeste e o Sul, com 42,85% e 28,57%, respectivamente; o Centro-Oeste representa 21,42% e o Nordeste 7,14%. Foram encontrados 26 diagnósticos de enfermagem que são aplicados na prática da assistência à criança hospitalizada. O processo de enfermagem é um instrumento de comunicação que apresenta o plano de ação instituído à equipe de enfermagem e aos outros profissionais envolvidos no tratamento da criança.


The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge produced by nurses, relating to the systematization of nursing care and to the hospitalized child. This is a narrative literature review with a qualitative, exploratory, and retrospective approach. This review was carried out in the second half of 2021, with searches in journals' collections accessed via the Virtual Public Health Library, and the selected manuscripts were read sequentially, as proposed by Bardin's content analysis. The selected journals were published in the time interval from 2017 to 2021. In this research, of the journals that had publications included, 42.85% belong to qualis B1, qualis B2 and A2 represented 21.42% each, and qualis A1 and B3 equated to 7.14% each. Regarding the region of publication, those that contributed the most numerically were the Southeast and South, with 42.85% and 28.57%, respectively; the Midwest represents 21.42% and the Northeast 7.14% of publications. A total of 26 nursing diagnoses that are applied in the practice of care for hospitalized children were found. The nursing process is a communication tool that presents the established action plan to the nursing team and other professionals involved in the child's treatment.


El objetivo de este artículo fue investigar el conocimiento producido por enfermeros, relacionado a la sistematización del cuidado de enfermería y del niño hospitalizado. Se trata de una revisión narrativa de la literatura, con enfoque cualitativo, exploratorio y retrospectivo. Esta revisión se realizó en el segundo semestre de 2021, mediante una búsqueda en las colecciones de las revistas de la Biblioteca Virtual en Salud Pública, enseguida se leyeron los manuscritos seleccionados según lo propuesto por el análisis de contenido de Bardin. Las revistas seleccionadas se encuentran publicadas en el intervalo de tiempo de 2017 a 2021. The modulation of inflammatory elements, cell differentiation and proliferation by vitamin D and the role of probiotics in the intestinal microbiota and immunogenic response have sparked interest in the application of both in chemotherapeutics and chemoprevention of colorectal tumors. AIMS: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of isolated and/or combined treatment of vitamin D3 and probiotics on colorectal carcinogenesis. MAIN METHODS: Pre-neoplastic lesions were induced with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine in the colon of Wistar rats, which were treated with probiotics and/or vitamin D in three different approaches (simultaneous, pre-, and post-treatment). We investigated the frequency of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and aberrant crypt (AC) in the distal colon, fecal microbiome composition, gene and protein expression through immunohistochemical and RT-PCR assays, and general toxicity through water consumption and weight gain monitoring. KEY FINDINGS: Results confirm the systemic safety of treatments, and show a protective effect of vitamin D and probiotics in all approaches studied, as well as in combined treatments, with predominance of different bacterial phyla compared to controls. Treated groups show different levels of Nrf2, GST, COX2, iNOS, ß-catenin and PCNA expression. SIGNIFICANCE: These experimental conditions explore the combination of vitamin D and probiotics supplementation at low doses over pathways involved in distinct stages of colorectal carcinogenesis, with results supporting its application in prevention and long-term strategies.

NiFeMo alloy nanoparticles were synthesized by co-precipitation in the presence of organic additives. Nanoparticles thermal evolution shows that there is a significant increase in the average size (from 28 to 60 nm), consolidating a crystalline structure of the same type as the Ni3 Fe phase but with lattice parameter a = 0.362 nm. Measurements of magnetic properties follow this morphological and structural evolution increasing saturation magnetization (Ms) by 578% and reducing remanence magnetization (Mr) by 29%. Cell viability assays on as-synthesized revealed that nanoparticles (NPs) are not cytotoxic up to a concentration of 0.4 µg/mL for both non-tumorigenic (fibroblasts and macrophages) and tumor cells (melanoma).
