BACKGROUND: Polymeric nanoparticles have a wide diversity, and due to their toxicity and biodegradability, they have been widely used in the health area. Its use allows stability of some compounds, targeted delivery, and increased half-life, in this context, making some treatment proposals more effective. Prostate cancer, in turn, is among the types of cancer with the highest mortality, and the lack of effective treatment causes several strategies to meet this need. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work was to verify patents that use polymeric nanoparticles for the treatment of prostate cancer. METHODS: For that, specific keywords to direct the search were applied in Patent Scope. After obtaining the patents, one was selected for the development of critical analysis in relation to its chemistry and biology. RESULTS: A total of five patents were found and, of these, an invention that used PCL-PLGA-PEGCOOH polymeric nanoparticles with two natural compounds, resveratrol and celastrol, providing an alternative method to traditional monotherapies. CONCLUSION: The prospective analysis serves to direct us in relation to the technologies currently used in certain fields. Based on several cases of cancer and specifically the countless cases of prostate cancer, five recent patents were found using polymeric nanoparticles. However, only one brought a different aspect of all the treatments used lately. It brought an invention containing two natural compounds being carried with polymeric nanoparticles with promising results.

The use of non-conventional carbon sources for biosurfactant-producing microorganisms is a promising alternative in fermentation to substitute costly substrates. So, the current research used pineapple peel as a cost-effective and renewable substrate because of its rich composition in minerals and sugars and high availability. Following a 22 full factorial design, a bacterial strain of Bacillus subtilis produced biosurfactants in fermentative media containing different concentrations of glucose and concentrated pineapple peel juice (CPPJ). The influence of these two independent variables was evaluated according to three different responses: surface tension reduction rate (STRR), emulsification index (EI24), and concentration of semi-purified biosurfactant (SPB). The maximum value for STRR (57.63%) was obtained in media containing 0.58% glucose (w/v) and 5.82% CPPJ (v/v), while the highest EI24 response (58.60%) was observed at 2% glucose (w/v) and 20% CPPJ (v/v) and maximum SPB (1.28 g/L) at 3.42% glucose (w/v) and 34.18% CPPJ (v/v). Statistical analysis indicated that the CPPJ variable mostly influenced the STRR and SPB responses, whereas the EI24 was significantly influenced by pineapple peel juice and glucose contents.

The large pineapple's consumption and processing have generated a massive amount of waste yearly, which requires adequate treatment measures to avoid damages to the environment. Pineapple peel is one of the main residues obtained from this fruit and a promising strategy to take advantage of its potential is using it for biosurfactant production due to the peel's rich composition in fermentable sugars and nutrients, such as potassium and magnesium that favor the Bacillus subtilis growth and biosurfactant excretion as well. The current research performed a central composite design (CCD) with four independent variables (glucose, pineapple peel, potassium, and magnesium), evaluating substrates' influence on the surface tension reduction rate (STRR) and the emulsification index (EI24). The results indicated that pineapple peel has the necessary potential to act as a partial substitute for glucose and salt nutrients, minimizing the costs of supplementing with exogenous minerals. The highest surface tension reduction rate (57.744%) was obtained at 2.18% glucose (w/v); 14.67% pineapple peel (v/v); 2.38 g/L KH2PO4; and 0.15 g/L MgSO4.7H2O; whereas to obtain the maximum predicted value for EI24 (61.92%) the medium was composed by 2.24% glucose (w/v); 12.63% pineapple peel (v/v); 2.53 g/L KH2PO4; and 0.29 g/L MgSO4.7H2O.

Herein, the biosorption of Cr(VI) by magnetized coconut fibres obtained from agricultural waste has been described. Magnetization was achieved by incorporating magnetite nanoparticles into the fibres by a coprecipitation reaction in alkaline media. The biosorption capacity of the fibres was evaluated by two series of experiments. In the first series, 500 mg L-1 of the biosorbent was added to a 50 mg L-1 K2Cr2O7 solution at 28 °C and stirred at 200 rpm and the pH was varied from 1 to 13 to determine the optimum pH value. The second series of experiments evaluated the sorption capacity of the fibres at the optimum pH, under the same agitation speed and temperature but with an adsorbate concentration of 100 mg L-1. The biosorbents were characterized using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, dispersive X-ray fluorescence, and X-ray powder diffraction. The biosorption experiments demonstrated that the magnetization process increased the biosorption capacity of the material. Optimum biosorption occurred at pH 2, and at optimal conditions, the best adsorptive efficiency exceeded 90%, reaching a biosorption capacity of 87.38 mg g-1 for the magnetized fibre and 23.87 mg g-1 for the natural fibre, with an equilibrium time of less than 20 min.

The biosurfactant production is characterized by high costs with substrates, which does not make them sufficiently competitive against synthetic surfactants. The insertion of alternative sources of low cost, especially agro-industrial residue, is an excellent alternative to make this competitiveness viable. An alkaline pretreatment was used to extract the hemicellulose from corncob in order to enhance its C5 fraction, common to vegetable biomasses. The hemicellulosic corncob liquor was used with glucose and mineral salt solution as carbon and nutrients sources in a fermentation process for the growth of Bacillus subtilis. It was performed a 23 full factorial design to determine the best conditions for the surfactin production in relation to the following response variables: surface tension reduction rate (STRR) and emulsification index (EI24), from which were obtained two optimized bioproducts under specific conditions. The optimized biosurfactants found to be effected presenting a critical micelle concentration of 100 mg.L-1 and a maximum bioremediation potential of 85.18%, as well as maximum values of 57.38% and 65.30% for STRR and EI24 variables, respectively. Overall results pointed for a successful commercial application for the surfactin produced.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze statistically results obtained between biomechanical assays on fixation of femoral neck fracture type Pauwels III, on synthetic bone, using 7.5 mm non parallel cannulated screws and control group. METHODS: Ten synthetic bones from a national brand were used. Test group: fixation of 70((o)) tilt femoral neck osteotomy was performed using three 7.5 mm non parallel cannulated screws. We analyzed the resistance of this fixation with 5 mm of displacement, and rotational deviation (phase 1) and with 10 mm offset (phase 2). CONTROL GROUP: the models were tested in their integrity until the femoral neck fracture occurred. RESULTS: the values of the test group in phase 1, in sample 1-5 had a mean of 517N and SD = 96N. Rotational deviations showed a mean of 3.79° e SD = 2. 03°. In phase 2, mean was 649N and SD = 94N. The values of the maximum load in the control group were: 1544N, 1110N, 1359N, 1194N, 1437N; respectively. Statistical analysis between the groups showed a statistically significant lower value in the test group. CONCLUSION: the analysis of mechanical resistance between the groups has determined statistically significant value for the test group.

The presence of mercury in aquatic environments is a matter of concern by part of the scientific community and public health organizations worldwide due to its persistence and toxicity. The phytoremediation consists in a group of technologies based on the use of natural occurrence or genetically modified plants, in order to reduce, remove, break or immobilize pollutants and working as an alternative to replace conventional effluent treatment methods due to its sustainability - low cost of maintenance and energy. The current study provides information about a pilot scale experiment designed to evaluate the potential of the aquatic macrophyte Typha domingensis in a constructed wetland with subsurface flow for phytoremediation of water contaminated with mercury. The efficiency in the reduction of the heavy metal concentration in wetlands, and the relative metal sorption by the T. domingensis, varied according to the exposure time. The continued rate of the system was 7 times higher than the control line, demonstrating a better performance and reducing 99.6±0.4% of the mercury presents in the water contaminated. When compared to other species, the results showed that the T. domingensis demonstrated a higher mercury accumulation (273.3515±0.7234 mg kg(-1)) when the transfer coefficient was 7750.9864±569.5468 L kg(-1). The results in this present study shows the great potential of the aquatic macrophyte T. domingensis in constructed wetlands for phytoremediation of water contaminated with mercury.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the activity of bromelain in pineapple plants (Ananas comosus var. Comosus), Pérola cultivar, produced in vitro in different culture conditions. This enzyme, besides its pharmacological effects, is also employed in food industries, such as breweries and meat processing. In this work, the enzymatic activity was evaluated in the tissues of leaves and stems of plants grown in culture medium without plant growth regulator. The most significant levels of bromelain were observed in leaf tissue after 4 months of culture in vitro in medium with a filter paper bridge, followed by medium gelled by the agar. The results of this study, regarding the different structures of the pineapple (leaves and stems) in vitro showed that the activity of bromelain varied depending on the culture conditions, the time and structure of which was quantified, ensuring a viable strategy in the production of seedlings with high levels of bromelain in subsequent phases of micropropagation.
