RESUMO

The guinea pig has been chosen as a research model for otologic or neuropathic studies due to the relative ease of the cochlea, cochlear nerve, and vestibular nerve dissection. Little data have been reported on the normality of these nerves. The vestibular nerve is composed of the superior vestibular, inferior vestibular, and branch nerves. This study aimed to study the microscopic anatomy of the superior vestibular nerve (SVN) of guinea pigs using light microscopy and to search for normality patterns for use in experimental models in basic otologic research. We used eight male albino guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus, English strain), weighing between 400 and 500 g. After anesthetizing, the animals were perfused with a fixative solution of 2.5% glutaraldehyde. Dissection was performed by the access method to the temporal bone, coming to the rock and exposing the cochlea and vestibular nerve. The NVS fragments were removed, postfixed in osmium tetroxide, and embedded in the epoxy plastic resin Poly/Bed 812® (Polysciences Inc., Warrington, PA). Semi-thin transverse serial sections (0.5 µm) were made using a microtome MT6000-XL, RMC, Inc. and stained with toluidine blue. Morphology and morphometry were described and evaluated using the KS 400 application (Kontron 2.0, EchingBei, Munich, Germany) by macro, a computer program specially designed and developed for the study of the VIII nerve. The SVN was found to be devoid of epineurium, with only a thin conjunctive tissue layer. The myelin sheath of guinea pigs is relatively thin compared to the sensory and motor nerves found in mammals. The average fascicular area SVN was 0.19 ± 0.05 mm2 , with the largest area found to be 0.24 mm2 and the lowest was 0.12 mm2 . The average number of fibers was 5,753.00 ± 538 fibers. The density of myelinated fibers reached 32,316.08 ± 11,375.29 fibers/mm2 . Its diameter ranged from 1.0 to 9 µm and its peak was 3 µm. The measured results confirm the results of another study, indicating that the methodology is appropriate and reproducible. These findings are important for the evaluation of injured nerves in experimental models of peripheral neuropathy and basic ear disease.

RESUMO

More than 2.3 million children under the age of five in Yemen suffer from acute malnutrition. Approximately 450,000 are expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition and may die if they do not receive urgent treatment. In this context, without security, stability, and better access for farmers to have the means to resume growing food, children and their families continue to sink deeper and deeper into hunger and malnutrition.

Approximately 450,000 are expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition and may die if they do not receive urgent treatment. In this context, without security, stability, and better access for farmers to have the means to resume growing food, children and their families continue to sink deeper and deeper into hunger and malnutrition. As a result, malnourished children are more vulnerable to illnesses, including diarrhea, respiratory infections, and malaria, which are a major concern in Yemen. This situation is a vicious and often deadly cycle.

RESUMO

Violence against women is a profound global injustice. It is a major obstacle to fulfilling the human rights of women and their children. Confined to their aggressors, women exposed to this violence have even greater difficulty in accessing support networks and care services. Furthermore, the economic impact of the pandemic, which disproportionately affected women, created additional barriers. In reality, however, femicide is forgotten, underestimated, and poorly prosecuted throughout the world. In this context, more than 100 children witnessed a murder or were at home when it took place. This form of indirect violence is vicarious, in which children are left out, anonymous, and invisible. The trauma generated potentiates mentalization difficulties, emotional dependence, and instability in future relationships, caused by pain and psychological suffering.

RESUMO

Abstract Excessive sleepiness (ES) is an increased tendency to initiate involuntary sleep for naps at inappropriate times. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess ES in air traffic controllers (ATCo). Methods: 45 flight protection professionals were evaluated, comprising 30 ATCo, subdivided into ATCo with ten or more years in the profession (ATCo≥10, n=15) and ATCo with less than ten years in the profession (ATCo<10, n=15) and 15 aeronautical information services operators (AIS), subdivided into AIS with ten years or more in the profession (AIS≥10, n=8) and AIS with less than ten years in the profession (AIS<10, n=7), who were included as the control group. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test were used for evaluating subjective and objective excessive sleepiness. Kruskal-Wallis was used for ES and Mann-Whitney for sleep latency (SL), collection time in minutes (mins), and expressed as Median (Minimum-Maximum), p<0.05. Results: ATCo≥10 12 (6-14) mins and ATCo<10 10 (1-15) mins showed greater sleepiness compared to CONTROL1 7 (3-8) mins and CONTROL2 6 (4-6) mins, p=0.001*. A total of 77.27% of the ATCo and 16.67% of the AIS had an SL of less than 20 minutes. The ATCo presented an SL of 16.59 (3.25-40), lower than that of the AIS of 31.71 (10.63-40) mins, p<0.05*. Conclusion: Brazilian air traffic controllers exhibit excessive sleepiness.

RESUMO

Air traffic controllers simultaneously develop complex and multiple tasks in the course of their activities. In this context, concern is raised over the high level of attention needed by these professionals which can ultimately be affected by stress and fatigue. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess attention level in air traffic controllers (ATCo). METHODS: 45 flight protection professionals were evaluated, comprising 30 ATCo, subdivided into ATCo with ten or more years in the profession (ATCo≥10, n=15) and ATCo with less than ten years in the profession (ATCo <10, n=15) and 15 aeronautical information services operators (AIS), subdivided into AIS with ten years or more in the profession (AIS≥10, n=8) and AIS with less than ten years in the profession (AIS <10, n=7), who were included as the control group. The digit symbol, d2 (the individual marks the letter d on a specific form containing 14 lines with 47 letters in each, maintaining focus on letter d followed by two dashes), forward digit span, backward digit span and PASAT (paced auditory serial addition test) attention tests were used. Kruskal-Wallis was used and data expressed as Median (Minimum and Maximum) with p<0.05. RESULTS: The ATCo≥10 presented greater focus of attention, sustained attention, mental manipulation and resistance to interference capacity compared to the AIS≥10. Comparison of ATCo≥10 to the AIS<10 showed they presented only greater resistance to interference, and when compared to the ATCo<10 presented lower focus. CONCLUSIONS: The air traffic control activity after ten years may be associated with a high level of attention.

Conditions that facilitate epilepsy, such as sleep deprivation or the cholinergic muscarinic agonist pilocarpine (PILO), have been experimentally studied, as they are relevant for brain excitability control and could help in understanding the development of epilepsy in humans. In this work, following to 72h deprivation (D) of sleep by the water tank technique, adult Wistar rats were anesthetized with a 1g/kg urethane+40mg/kg chloralose mixture and cortical spreading depression (CSD) was recorded for a 1-2h period in the parietal surface. CSD propagation velocity was calculated based on the time spent for a CSD-wave to pass the interelectrode distance. After this "baseline" recording, D-animals were divided in three groups and respectively injected with 45, 95 and 190mg/kg of PILO, i.p., and the CSD recording continued for two more hours. Three groups of non-deprived (ND) rats were also injected with the three doses of PILO and studied regarding CSD features. D-animals presented higher baseline CSD velocities than the corresponding ND-controls, confirming previous observations that D-condition facilitates CSD propagation. After PILO, the ECoG amplitudes were markedly and lastingly reduced in all animals, at the three doses used. In the groups treated with 95 and 190mg/kg PILO, the CSD velocity of propagation significantly (P<0.05) decreased, and the incidence of PILO-associated CSD-propagation failure increased in the D rats, but not in the ND rats, as compared with the pre-drug values. The data suggest the existence of one or more cholinergic, muscarinic-mediated antagonistic processes influencing CSD, which are dose-dependent and are modulated by sleep-deprivation.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the effect of a single injection of pilocarpine upon the phenomenon of cortical spreading depression (SD), in adult rats submitted to early malnutrition and/or to REM-sleep deprivation for 72h prior to the SD-recordings. The SD was recorded continuously for 3-4h in 13 well-nourished (W) and 15 early-malnourished (M) adult rats. One to two hours after the beginning of the recording session, a sub-convulsing intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of pilocarpine (190mg/kg) was applied and its effects on SD were studied during the rest of the recording session. Pilocarpine reduced markedly the ECoG amplitudes in all animals and decreased the SD velocity of propagation in the M-, but not in the W-rats, as compared with the pre-drug values for the same animals. In additional 9W- and 10 M-animals, REM-sleep deprivation was induced during the 72 h preceding the SD-recording session. This condition enhanced the pilocarpine effects on SD in the W-, but not in the M-rats, as compared to the respective non-deprived (ND) groups. The results indicate an important acute cholinergic influence on SD, acting by means of pilocarpine-activated muscarinic receptors. This effect seems to be differentially modulated by sleep deprivation and malnutrition.
