Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare malignancy of the skin in predominantly elderly patients, frequently missed because of its inconspicuous aspect. The histological diagnosis is not always easily made. Four case histories are presented. Literature shows the aggressive biological behaviour of this tumour: the rate of local recurrence is 40%, of regional metastatic disease over 50%, while approximately half the patients with a Merkel cell carcinoma will die of this skin tumour.

A case of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis revealed the classical pathologic features of ALS, i.e. neuronal loss in the anterior horns and pyramidal tract degeneration. In addition to the pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease, senile plaques, neurofibrillary tangles and granulovacuolar changes of neurons were also present. Clinically the 67-year-old patient exhibited ALS of the upper extremity and a mild forgetfulness. Two striking pathological features were noted in the spinal cord: first, at several levels in the spinal cord excessive amounts of myelinated neurites were found; second, the microglial proliferation in the anterior horns was very intense and positive for leukocyte common antigen.

Manifestations of schistosomiasis in otorhinolaryngology are rare. A review of the literature revealed only four cases. The purpose of this paper is to document the second case of schistosomiasis of the larynx.

Two cases of cutaneous amoebiasis which presented as malignant ulcers are reported. In non-healing ulcers in the perianal or gluteal region, the possibility of amoebiasis should be kept in mind, especially in the tropics. An immediate examination of the scraping from the ulcer is sufficient to confirm or rule out the diagnosis.

A case of hydatid cyst of orbit is presented for the first time from Tanzania. The patient presented with unilateral proptosis. Hydatid cyst should be included in the differential diagnosis of all cases of unilateral proptosis and a Casoni test done as a routine to confirm or rule out such a possibility.

Sixteen cases of chromomycosis encountered over the period 1975-1980 are reported for the first time from Tanzania. In the tropics, in ulcerative or cauliflower-like lesions, especially of lower limbs the possibility of chromomycosis should be confirmed or ruled out by means of scrapings or biopsy.

Fifteen cases of rhinosporidiosis are reported for the first time from Tanzania. The disease affected males more frequently than females. Involvement of the eye is more common than involvement of the nose, a feature which is not encountered in endemic areas.

A new television projection system is described. The heart of this light valve is a deformable reflective target consisting of a thin (~2000-6000 A)metal film supported in close proximity to a glass substrate. In operation a video-modulated electron beam scans the target and deforms the metal film analogously to the intensity of the video signal. These deformations control the amount of light from the schlieren projector that falls on the screen. The mechanical and electrical performance of the deformable targets and operation of a specially designed off-axis, reflective schlieren projector are discussed. Display results for the total system are presented.
