INTRODUÇÃO: A presença de regurgitação tricúspide (RT) está associada à grave prognóstico, com sintomas refratários, perda de qualidade de vida e redução da sobrevida. Diferentes intervenções por cateter têm sido desenvolvidas para o tratamento de pacientes (pts) com RT sintomática e risco cirúrgico elevado. O sistema TricValve (P&F) é composto por 2 próteses auto-expansíveis de nitinol com folhetos de pericárdio bovino para implante heterotópico bicaval - reduzindo o refluxo hepático e os efeitos sistêmicos deletérios da RT grave, sendo o único dispositivo dedicado a este tratamento disponível no Brasil. MÉTODOS Relatamos a experiência inicial de um hospital terciário do SUS no implante do sistema TricValve. Entre julho de 2022 e maio de 2023, 5 pacientes com RT sintomática, NYHA > III e internações prévias por descompensação clínica - a despeito de terapia com diuréticos em altas doses - foram selecionados, sendo 60% do sexo feminino e média de idade de 65 ± 7,9 anos. Dois pts já haviam sido submetidos a transplante cardíaco, e 4 pts apresentavam cirurgia valvar não-tricúspide prévia. Quatro pts apresentavam fibrilação atrial e 1 possuía marca-passo definitivo prévio. O Tri-Score médio foi de 3,25 ± 1,29 pontos. Ao ecocardigrama, a fração de ejeção do ventrículo esquerdo (FEVE) era preservada (60,2 ± 1,1 %), e a maioria dos pts apresentava dilatação do ventrículo direito, porém com função preservada. Após 2 casos iniciais realizados sob anestesia geral, 3 casos mais recentes necessitaram de sedação e anestesia local, com monitorização do implante por fluroscopia e ecocardiograma transtorácico. O sucesso técnico foi alcançado em todos os pts, sem desfechos cardíacos adversos. Quatro pacientes (80%) relataram dor transitória no ombro após o procedimento, com melhora gradual após uso de gabapentina. O tempo de internação hospitalar médio foi de 15 ± 12 dias, e o prolongamento da internação deveu-se principalmente ao ajuste da dose de anticoagulação oral com warfarina em 4 pts; apenas um fez uso de DOAC. No acompanhamento de 30 dias, 80% dos pts apresentaram redução de mais de 50% na dose do diurético, mantida após 6 meses. Houve melhoria de classe funcional, com NYHA ≤ II em todos os pts. CONCLUSÃO: Nossa experiência inicial com o sistema TricValve refletiu os resultados do estudo TRICUS EURO, observando-se significativa melhora clínica realçada pela possibilidade de redução do uso de diuréticos, com alto índice de sucesso técnico.

Bioactive materials were developed with the ability to release fluoride and provide some antimicrobial potential, to be widely used in dentistry today. However, few scientific studies have evaluated the antimicrobial activity of bioactive surface pre-reacted glass (S-PRG) coatings (PRG Barrier Coat, Shofu, Kyoto, Japan) on periodontopathogenic biofilms. This study evaluated the antibacterial activity of S-PRG fillers on the microbial profile of multispecies subgingival biofilms. A Calgary Biofilm Device (CBD) was used to grow a 33-species biofilm related to periodontitis for 7 days. The S-PRG coating was applied on CBD pins from the test group and photo-activated (PRG Barrier Coat, Shofu), while the control group received no coating. Seven days after treatment, the total bacterial counts, metabolic activity, and microbial profile of the biofilms were observed using a colorimetric assay and DNA-DNA hybridization. Statistical analyses were applied; namely, the Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunn's post hoc tests. The bacterial activity of the test group was reduced by 25.7% compared with that of the control group. A statistically significant reduction was observed for the counts of 15 species: A. naeslundii, A. odontolyticus, V. parvula, C. ochracea, C. sputigena, E. corrodens, C. gracilis, F. nucleatum polymorphum, F. nucleatum vincentii, F. periodonticum, P. intermedia, P. gingivalis, G. morbillorum, S. anginosus, and S. noxia (p ≤ 0.05). The bioactive coating containing S-PRG modified the composition of the subgingival biofilm in vitro, thereby decreasing colonization by pathogens.

PURPOSE: This study primarily aimed to assess the accuracy of radiographic dental calcification parameters for the identification of specific craniofacial growth stages. METHODS: Permanent mandibular canines, premolars, and second molars of 288 patients, from 6 to 15 years old, were analysed on randomly selected panoramic radiographs, and categorised according to two calcification methods. Reproducibility analyses and data derived from panoramic records were correlated with the gold-standard method, as evaluated from lateral cephalometric teleradiographs. Accuracy tests were finally calculated, considering several cutoff points. RESULTS: Dental calcification methods showed "strong" to "almost perfect" intra- and inter-examiner reproducibility. Significant, although weak correlations were observed for all parameters. Canine and first premolar calcification stage 8 and second premolar and second molar stage 7 showed higher sensitivity rates for identifying the pubertal growth spurt period, as well as the stage F for these teeth. Canine and first premolar stages 10 and H obtained higher specificity rates for identifying the absence of post-pubertal period. CONCLUSIONS: The dental calcification parameters showed adequate reproducibility, in addition to significant correlations with cervical vertebrae stages. Radiographic dental calcification parameters used for the mandibular first premolar obtained high accuracy rates and were recommended for identifying specific craniofacial growth periods.

INTRODUÇÃO: O benefício do cateterismo por acesso transradial (ATR) está bem estabelecido, principalmente em intervenções coronárias, onde o uso de medicações aumenta o risco de sangramento. O uso da via no cateterismo diagnóstico permite maior conforto ao paciente e reduz complicações relacionadas com a via de acesso. A ocorrência de espasmo (EAR) e oclusão da artéria (OAR) são as complicações mais frequentes do ATR. O uso de introdutores de menor calibre poderia reduzir estas complicações. OBJETIVOS: Comparar a incidência de EAR e OAR em cateterismo diagnósticos, considerando-se o calibre do introdutor utilizado. MÉTODOS: Estudo multicêntrico, prospectivo, observacional. A escolha do introdutor a ser utilizado ficou a cargo do médico responsável pelo procedimento. Todos pacientes receberam heparina na dose de 5000 UI e receberam hemostasia patente ou de pressão mínima ao final do procedimento. A avaliação de EAR foi clínica, através de escala numérica de dor (graduada de 0 a 10), e foi definido como presente nos casos em que seja maior que 6. A avaliação de OAR foi realizada com ultrassonografia com Doppler, realizada nas primeiras 12 horas após o procedimento. RESULTADOS: Foram incluídos 1534 pacientes submetidos a cateterismo diagnóstico, sendo 625 (40,7%) mulheres. A maioria dos procedimentos foi em síndromes coronárias crônicas (61,5%). Foram utilizados introdutores 5F em 1185 (77,2%) e 6 F em 349 (22.8%), todos os procedimentos foram concluídos com o introdutor inicialmente escolhido, sem necessidade de troca. A relação introdutor: artéria foi maior que 1 em 43,4% dos pacientes no grupo 5F e 39,3%, no grupo 6F (p=0,19). A incidência de EAR foi igual nos dois calibres de introdutores utilizados (11,4% vs. 12,3%; p=0,63), bem como a incidência de OAR (2,8% vs. 2,0%; p=0,42). CONCLUSÕES: O EAR e a OAR tem frequência similar em cateterismo diagnósticos realizados com introdutores 5F ou 6F. O papel do hemodinamicista na escolha do calibre a ser utilizado pode ter colaborado com este resultado, visto que não houve diferença na relação de calibre entre introdutor: artéria nos dois grupos, portanto um trabalho randomizado poderia não apresentar o mesmo resultado.

Lipid and cholinergic mediators are inflammatory regulators, but their role in the immunopathology of COVID-19 is still unclear. Here, we used human blood and tracheal aspirate (TA) to investigate whether acetylcholine (Ach), fatty acids (FAs), and their derived lipid mediators (LMs) are associated with COVID-19 severity. First, we analyzed the perturbation profile induced by SARS-CoV-2 infection in the transcriptional profile of genes related to the ACh and FA/LM pathways. Blood and TA were used for metabolomic and lipidomic analyses and for quantification of leukocytes, cytokines, and ACh. Differential expression and coexpression gene network data revealed a unique transcriptional profile associated with ACh and FA/LM production, release, and cellular signaling. Transcriptomic data were corroborated by laboratory findings: SARS-CoV-2 infection increased plasma and TA levels of arachidonic acid, 5-hydroxy-6E,8Z,11Z,14Z-eicosatetraenoic acid, 11-hydroxy-5Z,8Z,12E,14Z-eicosatetraenoic acid, and ACh. TA samples also exhibited high levels of PGE2, thromboxane B2, 12-oxo-5Z,8Z,10E,14Z-eicosatetraenoic acid, and 6-trans-leukotriene B4 Bioinformatics and experimental approaches demonstrated robust correlation between transcriptional profile in Ach and FA/LM pathways and parameters of severe COVID-19. As expected, the increased neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, neutrophil counts, and cytokine levels (IL-6, IL-10, IL-1ß, and IL-8) correlated with worse clinical scores. Glucocorticoids protected severe and critical patients and correlated with reduced Ach levels in plasma and TA samples. We demonstrated that pulmonary and systemic hyperinflammation in severe COVID-19 are associated with high levels of Ach and FA/LM. Glucocorticoids favored the survival of patients with severe/critical disease, and this effect was associated with a reduction in ACh levels.

The aim of this study was to obtain ionic quantification in periradicular medium after diffusion tests of the solution used inside root canals during the electrochemical dissolution of endodontic file fragments and the NiTi-containing dissolution product via an apical foramen. Thirty single-rooted extracted human teeth had root canals prepared and were attached to Eppendorf tubes filled with sterile saline. The samples were divided into 3 groups (n = 10) according to the solution used inside the root canal during the diffusion tests: Group 1: [NaF 12 g/L + NaCl 1 g/L]; Group 2: [NaF 12 g/L + NaCl 1 g/L + NiTi 0.50 g/L]; Group 3: [NaF 6 g/L + NaCl 0.5 g/L + NiTi 0.25 g/L]. The sample in each Eppendorf tube was then analyzed to assay the ionic quantification in periradicular medium. The groups were compared in relation to ionic quantifications (Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests, p ≤ 0.05). Group 2 showed significantly higher F-, Ni and Ti quantities than groups 1 and 3 (p < 0.05). Group 3 showed significantly higher Ti and Ni quantities than group 1, where no measurable quantities of Ti and Ni were observed (p < 0.05). The conclusions were that a 50% dilution of the NiTi-containing dissolution product resulted in significantly lower F-, Ni and Ti quantities compared to the undiluted product. The quantifications observed here suggest that irrigation is recommendable during the electrochemical dissolution process to reduce the resultant ion concentrations in both the root canal and the periradicular medium.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the microbiota profile of residual alveolar slits and teeth adjacent to the cleft in fissured individuals. DESIGNS: This study used a cross-sectional design. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty individuals, aged 14 to 24 years, who had a residual fissure in the maxillary alveolar ridge region were selected. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Three sites per individual were selected for microbiological collection (the site of the residual cleft and the 2 nearest teeth). The samples were analyzed using the Checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization technique for 73 species of bacteria. RESULTS: All the species analyzed were found in the 2 niches (slits and teeth). The bacterial species present in the largest number in the residual cracks were Prevotella melaninogenica, Prevotella nigrescens, and Streptococcus mitis. With regard to the bacterial profiles in the mesial and distal faces, the most prevalent species were P nigrescens, Veillonella parvula, and Fusobacterium nucleatum sp vicentii. The analysis of all the collected samples demonstrated very similar profiles for the mesial and distal faces, with these 2 sites even presenting the same species in greater frequencies. Higher counts of 20 bacterial species (Wilcoxon test) were observed in the dental niche, in relation to the fissure, particularly, P nigrescens, V parvula, F nucleatum sp vicentii, and Neisseria mucosa. CONCLUSION: Some species were significantly more prevalent in the residual alveolar fissures and in adjacent teeth. The comparison between the profiles of the 2 niches demonstrated large differences in the most frequent species in the teeth, and no qualitative differences with regard to specific pathogens.

OBJECTIVE:: This study aimed at evaluating the design and dimensions of five different brands of orthodontic mini-implants, as well as their influence on torsional fracture strength. METHODS:: Fifty mini-implants were divided into five groups corresponding to different manufactures (DEN, RMO, CON, NEO, SIN). Twenty-five mini-implants were subjected to fracture test by torsion in the neck and the tip, through arbors attached to a Universal Mechanical Testing Machine. The other 25 mini-implants were subjected to insertion torque test into blocks of pork ribs using a torquimeter and contra-angle handpiece mounted in a surgical motor. The shape of the active tip of the mini-implants was evaluated under microscopy. The non-parametric Friedman test and Snedecor's F in analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to evaluate the differences between groups. RESULTS:: The fracture torque of the neck ranged from 23.45 N.cm (DEN) to 34.82 N.cm (SIN), and of the tip ranged from 9.35 N.cm (CON) to 24.36 N.cm (NEO). Insertion torque values ranged from 6.6 N.cm (RMO) to 10.2 N.cm (NEO). The characteristics that most influenced the results were outer diameter, inner diameter, the ratio between internal and external diameters, and the existence of milling in the apical region of the mini-implant. CONCLUSIONS:: The fracture torques were different for both the neck and the tip of the five types evaluated. NEO and SIN mini-implants showed the highest resistance to fracture of the neck and tip. The fracture torques of both tip and neck were higher than the torque required to insert mini-implants.

RESUMO Objetivo: o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o desenho e as medidas de cinco marcas diferentes de mini-implantes ortodônticos, e sua influência na resistência à fratura em torção. Métodos: cinquenta mini-implantes foram divididos em cinco grupos, correspondentes a diferentes fabricantes (DEN, Dentaurum; RMO, Rocky Mountain Orthodontics; CON, Conexão; NEO, Neodent; SIN, Sistema de Implantes Nacional). Vinte e cinco mini-implantes foram submetidos ao teste de fratura por torção no pescoço e na ponta, com mandris fixados a uma máquina universal de testes mecânicos. Os outros 25 mini-implantes foram submetidos ao teste de torque de inserção em blocos de costelas suínas, utilizando-se um torquímetro e um contra-ângulo montado em motor cirúrgico. O formato da ponta ativa dos mini-implantes foi avaliado por microscopia. O teste não-paramétrico de Friedman e o teste F de Snedecor na análise de variância (ANOVA) foram utilizados para avaliar as diferenças entre os grupos. Resultados: o torque de fratura do pescoço variou de 23,45 N.cm (DEN) a 34,82 N.cm (SIN); e o da ponta, entre 9,35 N.cm (CON) e 24,36 N.cm (NEO). O valor do torque de inserção variou de 6,6 N.cm (RMO) a 10,2 N.cm (NEO). As características que mais influenciaram os resultados foram: diâmetro externo, diâmetro interno, razão entre o diâmetro interno e o externo, e a presença de fresagem na região apical do mini-implante. Conclusões: os torques de fratura foram diferentes entre os cinco tipos avaliados, tanto no pescoço quanto na ponta. Os mini-implantes NEO e SIN foram os mais resistentes à fratura do pescoço e da ponta. Os torques de fratura tanto na ponta quanto no pescoço foram maiores do que o torque necessário para a inserção dos mini-implantes.

The aim of this randomized, single blinded clinical trial was to evaluate the effect of a pre-procedural mouthwash containing cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), zinc lactate (Zn) and sodium fluoride (F) in the reduction of viable bacteria in oral aerosol after a dental prophylaxis with ultrasonic scaler. Sixty systemically healthy volunteers receiving dental prophylaxis were randomly assigned to one of the following experimental groups (15 per group): (i) rinsing with 0.075% CPC, 0.28% Zn and 0.05% F (CPC+Zn+F), (ii) water or (iii) 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX), and (iv) no rinsing. Viable bacteria were collected from different locations in the dental office on enriched TSA plates and anaerobically incubated for 72 hours. The colonies were counted and species were then identified by Checkerboard DNA-DNA Hybridization. The total number of colony-forming units (CFUs) detected in the aerosols from volunteers who rinsed with CPC+Zn+F or CHX was statistically significantly (p<0.05) lower than of those subjects who did not rinse or who rinsed with water. When all locations were considered together, the aerosols from the CPC+Zn+F and CHX groups showed, respectively, 70% and 77% fewer CFUs than those from the No Rinsing group and 61% and 70% than those from the Water group. The mean proportions of bacterial species from the orange complex were statistically significantly (p<0.05) lower in aerosols from the CPC+Zn+F and CHX groups compared with the others two groups. In conclusion, the mouthwash containing CPC+Zn+F, is effective in reducing viable bacteria in oral aerosol after a dental prophylaxis with ultrasonic scaler.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the influence of glycemic control on the levels and frequency of subgingival periodontal pathogens in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and generalized chronic periodontitis (ChP). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-six patients with generalized ChP and type 2 DM were assigned according to the levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) into one of the following groups: HbA1c<8% (n=28) or HbA1c≥8% (n=28). Three subgingival biofilm samples from sites with probing depth (PD)<5 mm and three samples from sites with PD≥5 mm were analyzed by quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for the presence and levels of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Treponema denticola, Eubacterium nodatum, Parvimona micra, Fusobacterium nucleatum ssp. and Prevotella intermedia. RESULTS: The mean counts of F. nucleatum ssp. were statistically significantly higher in the sites with PD≥5 mm of the HbA1c≥8% group (p<0.05). Frequencies of detection of T. forsythia, E. nodatum, P. micra and F. nucleatum ssp. were all higher in the sites with PD≥5 mm of the patients with HbA1c≥8%, compared with those of patients with HbA1c<8% (p<0.05). Frequency of detection of P. intermedia was higher in the sites with PD<5 mm of the patients with HbA1c≥8% than those of the patients with HbA1c<8% (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Poor glycemic control, as indicated by HbA1c≥8%, is associated with increased levels and frequencies of periodontal pathogens in the subgingival biofilm of subjects with type 2 DM and ChP.

Abstract Objective This study evaluated the influence of glycemic control on the levels and frequency of subgingival periodontal pathogens in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and generalized chronic periodontitis (ChP). Abstract The aim of this randomized, single blinded clinical trial was to evaluate the effect of a pre-procedural mouthwash containing cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), zinc lactate (Zn) and sodium fluoride (F) in the reduction of viable bacteria in oral aerosol after a dental prophylaxis with ultrasonic scaler. Sixty systemically healthy volunteers receiving dental prophylaxis were randomly assigned to one of the following experimental groups (15 per group): (i) rinsing with 0.075% CPC, 0.28% Zn and 0.05% F (CPC+Zn+F), (ii) water or (iii) 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX), and (iv) no rinsing. Viable bacteria were collected from different locations in the dental office on enriched TSA plates and anaerobically incubated for 72 hours. The colonies were counted and species were then identified by Checkerboard DNA–DNA Hybridization. The total number of colony-forming units (CFUs) detected in the aerosols from volunteers who rinsed with CPC+Zn+F or CHX was statistically significantly (p<0.05) lower than of those subjects who did not rinse or who rinsed with water. When all locations were considered together, the aerosols from the CPC+Zn+F and CHX groups showed, respectively, 70% and 77% fewer CFUs than those from the No Rinsing group and 61% and 70% than those from the Water group. The mean proportions of bacterial species from the orange complex were statistically significantly (p<0.05) lower in aerosols from the CPC+Zn+F and CHX groups compared with the others two groups. In conclusion, the mouthwash containing CPC+Zn+F, is effective in reducing viable bacteria in oral aerosol after a dental prophylaxis with ultrasonic scaler.

Material and Methods Thirty subjects with chronic periodontitis (ChP) and 10 with periodontal health (PH) were included in the study. Nine subgingival biofilm samples were collected as follows: i) PH group - from the mesial/buccal aspect of each tooth in two randomly chosen contralateral quadrants; ii) ChP group - from three sites in each of the following probing depth (PD) categories: shallow (≤3 mm), moderate (4-6 mm) and deep (≥7 mm). Checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization was used to analyze the samples. Results We found the three species evaluated in a higher percentage of sites and at higher levels in the group with ChP than in the PH group (p<0.05, Mann-Whitney test). We also observed these differences when the samples from sites with PD≤4 mm or ≥5 mm of subjects with ChP were compared with those from subjects with PH (p<0.05, Mann-Whitney test). In addition, the prevalence and levels of D. pneumosintes, and especially of F. alocis were very low in healthy subjects (0.12x105 and 0.01x105, respectively). Conclusion F. alocis and D. pneumosintes might be associated with the etiology of ChP, and their role in the onset and progression of this infection should be further investigated. The role of P. endodontalis was less evident, since this species was found in relatively high levels and prevalence in the PH group.

In recent years, several new periodontal taxa have been associated with the etiology of periodontitis. A recent systematic review provides further support for the pathogenic role of 17 species/phylotypes. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and levels of these species in subjects with generalized chronic periodontitis (GChP; n = 30), generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP; n = 30), and periodontal health (PH; n = 30). All subjects underwent clinical and microbiological assessment. Nine subgingival plaque samples were collected from each subject and analyzed for their content of 20 bacterial species/phylotypes through the RNA-oligonucleotide quantification technique. Subjects from the GChP and GAgP groups presented the highest mean values for all clinical parameters in comparison with the PH group (P < 0.05). Subjects with GChP and GAgP showed significantly higher mean levels of Bacteroidetes sp. human oral taxon (HOT) 274, Fretibacterium sp. HOT 360, and TM7 sp. HOT 356 phylotypes, as well as higher mean levels of Filifactor alocis, Fretibacterium fastidiosum, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, and Selenomonas sputigena species than PH subjects (P < 0.05). GAgP subjects presented higher mean levels of TM7 sp. HOT 356 and F. alocis than GChP subjects (P < 0.05). A significantly higher mean prevalence of Bacteroidales sp. HOT 274, Desulfobulbus sp. HOT 041, Fretibacterium sp. HOT 360, and Fretibacterium sp. HOT 362 was found in subjects with GChP and GAgP than in PH subjects. Mean levels of P. gingivalis (r = 0.68), T. forsythia (r = 0.62), F. alocis (r = 0.51, P = 0.001), and Fretibacterium sp. HOT 360 (r = 0.41) were correlated with pocket depth (P < 0.001). In conclusion, Bacteroidales sp. HOT 274, Desulfobulbus sp. HOT 041, Fretibacterium sp. HOT 360, Fretibacterium sp. HOT 362, and TM7 sp. HOT 356 phylotypes, in addition to F. alocis, F. fastidiosum, and S. sputigena, seem to be associated with periodontitis, and their role in periodontal pathogenesis should be further investigated.

Introducción: El estudio de la superficie externa del cerebro es analizado desde diferentes puntos espaciales, es decir unasuperficie lateral, medial y basal. La superficie lateral del cerebro se distingue por la presencia de dos puntos de referencia quedividen a cada hemisferio cerebral en lóbulos. Estos dos puntos son la fisura de Silvio (fisura lateral) y el surco de Rolando (surcocentral). Estos dos surcos dividen a cada hemisferio en lóbulo frontal (superior a la fisura de Silvio y anterior al surco de Rolando),el lóbulo temporal (inferior a la fisura de Silvio) y lóbulo parietal (superior a la fisura de Silvio y posterior al surco de Rolando). Ellóbulo occipital se ubica por detrás del surco parietooccipital, y el lóbulo de la ínsula que se sitúa en la profundidad de la fisurade Silvio. Introduction: Brain cortex is studied from different views: lateral, medial and basal surfaces. The brain lateral surface is distinguished by the presence of referential points and sulci. Those specific surgical points consist of the Sylvian fissure (lateral fissure) and the Rolandic sulcus (central sulcus). Those sulci divide each hemisphere in frontal lobe (superior to the Sylvian fissure and anterior to the Rolandic sulcus), temporal lobe (inferior to the Sylvian fissure), and parietal lobe (superior to the Sylvian fissure and posterior to the Rolandic sulcus). The occipital lobe is located posteriorly to the parietooccipital sulci, and the insular lobe is located deep into the Sylvian fissure. Objetive: To describe the microsurgical anatomy of the brain cortex in tridimensional surface imaging reconstruction. Material and Methods: Human cadaveric speciments of 30 human brains were studied through the surgical microscopy D.F. Vasconcellos M900, 16x and 40x magnification, Nikon D60 camera, AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105 mm f/2.8G IF-ED lens, and microsurgical instruments. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To examine the microbial diversity associated with implants with or without peri-implantitis and to identify differences between the bacterial communities in these clinical conditions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty subjects were assigned to a Control group consisting of subjects with healthy implants and a Test group consisting of subjects with peri-implantitis sites, as well as a healthy implant site (n = 10/group). In the Test group, subgingival biofilm samples were taken from the deepest sites of the diseased implant. In both groups, samples were collected from one site around a healthy implant. DNA was extracted and the 16S rRNA gene was amplified and sequenced, and the phylotypes were identified by comparison with known 16S rRNA sequences. RESULTS: The phylogenetic identity of 1387 16S rRNA gene clones was determined. Healthy implants demonstrated higher proportions of Actinomyces, Atopobium, Gemella, Kingella and Rothia and lower levels of Campylobacter, Desulfobulbus, Dialister, Eubacterium, Filifactor, Mitsukella, Porphyromonas and Pseudoramibacter (Mann-Whitney U-test; P < 0.05). Fusobacterium nucleatum, Dialister invisus, Streptococcus sp. human oral taxon (HOT) 064, Filifactor alocis and Mitsuokella sp. HOT 131 presented a higher mean proportion, while Veillonella dispar, Actinomyces meyeri, Granulicatella adiacens showed lower mean proportions in the peri-implantitis sites when compared with healthy implants in both the Control and Test groups (Mann-Whitney U-test; P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Marked differences were observed in the composition of the subgingival biofilm between healthy and diseased implants. The biofilm associated with peri-implantitis harbored more pathogenic bacterial species from the orange complex and other "unusual" putative pathogens, such as F. alocis, D. invisus and Mitsuokella sp. HOT 131.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate, by checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization, the composition of the microbiota of primary endodontic infections in cases associated with exposed (n = 30) and unexposed (n = 30) pulp space. METHODS: Samples were collected by means of a #15 H-type file and 2 sterile paper points from 60 single-rooted teeth with necrotic pulp and periapical lesions. The presence, levels, and proportions of 40 bacterial species were determined by checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization. RESULTS: The species found in higher counts (×10(5)) in exposed pulp space cases were Eubacterium saburreum, Fusobacterium nucleatum ssp. vincentii, Tannerella forsythia, Enterococcus faecalis, Neisseria mucosa, Campylobacter gracilis, and Prevotella nigrescens, and in unexposed pulp space cases they were F. nucleatum ssp. vincentii, N. mucosa, E. faecalis, E. saburreum, C. gracilis, and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Counts of F. nucleatum ssp. vincentii, Campylobacter sputigena, Capnocytophaga showae, Treponema socrenskii, Porphyromonas endodontalis, Eikenella corrodens, and Capnocytophaga ochracea were significantly higher in unexposed pulp space cases (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The data of the present investigation suggested specific differences between the composition of the microbiota in cases with exposed and unexposed pulp space and an association between higher levels of some specific species and unexposed pulp space cases.
