RESUMO
Este artigo descreve as medidas adotadas para oenfrentamento da hanseníase desde o século XVIII como surgimento das Sociedades Protetoras dos Lázaros,até a construção dos hospitais de lázaros em todo opaís e em São Paulo. Traz a trajetória dos doentes poresses hospitais do Estado e a seqüência de criaçãodos asilos e posteriormente dos asilos-colônia: em1928 o Padre Bento (atual Complexo Hospitalar PadreBento(CHPB)/Guarulhos), 1931 Aymorés (atual InstitutoLauro de Souza Lima(ILSL)/Bauru) e em 1932 o Hospitalde Cocais em Casa Branca ( desativado) e o Pirapitingui(atual Hospital Dr. Francisco Ribeiro Arantes(HFRA)/Itu).Do isolamento compulsório até a abertura dos portões é traçado um paralelo com o cenário institucionalda época chegando até o momento atual em quegoverno e sociedade civil assumem nova articulaçãocomprometendo-se com a proposta de reestruturaçãodos 33 hospitais do país.
