Introduction: Piscirickettsia salmonis, the causative agent of Piscirickettsiosis, poses a significant threat to the Chilean aquaculture industry, resulting in substantial economic losses annually. The pathogen, first identified as specie in 1992, this pathogen was divided into two genogroups: LF-89 and EM-90, associated with different phenotypic mortality and pathogenicity. Traditional genotyping methods, such as multiplex PCR, are effective but limited by their cost, equipment requirements, and the need for specialized expertise. Methods: This study validates Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) as a rapid and specific alternative for diagnosing P. salmonis infections. We developed the first qPCR and LAMP assay targeting the species-conserved tonB receptor gene (tonB-r, WP_016210144.1) for the specific species-level identification of P. salmonis. Additionally, we designed two genotyping LAMP assays to differentiate between the LF-89 and EM-90 genogroups, utilizing the unique coding sequences Nitronate monooxygenase (WP_144420689.1) for LF-89 and Acid phosphatase (WP_016210154.1) for EM-90. Results: The LAMP assays demonstrated sensitivity and specificity comparable to real-time PCR, with additional benefits including rapid results, lower costs, and simplified operation, making them particularly suitable for field use. Specificity was confirmed by testing against other salmonid pathogens, such as Renibacterium salmoninarum, Vibrio ordalii, Flavobacterium psychrophilum, Tenacibaculum maritimum, and Aeromonas salmonicida, with no cross-reactivity observed. Discussion: The visual detection method and precise differentiation between genogroups underscore LAMP's potential as a robust diagnostic tool for aquaculture. This advancement in the specie detection (qPCR and LAMP) and genotyping of P. salmonis represents a significant step forward in disease management within the aquaculture industry. The implementation of LAMP promises enhanced disease surveillance, early detection, and improved management strategies, ultimately benefiting the salmonid aquaculture sector.

Given the overexploitation of fisheries and the growing consumption of sea products, aquaculture is emerging as an alternative to meet the demand for protein at regional, national, and global levels. In northern Chile, the foothills of the Andes offer an opportunity for sustainable economic diversification. In this study, results of a rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) culture in a recirculation system are presented, analyzing its growth and performance under altitude conditions. The research was carried out in Copaquilla, a small area in the foothills of northern Chile, 3000 m above sea level. Five thousand 15 g juvenile trout were acquired and transported by land from the Rio Blanco fish farm, successfully traveling more than 2100 km. During the 20-month-long culture, several growth parameters were evaluated, including specific growth rate, percentage of weight growth, feed conversion factor, survival, and Fulton's condition factor. All these parameters were within the normal growth range for trout, evidencing good-quality growth of the organisms. The results offer evidence that rainbow trout farming at 3000 m above sea level is viable and presents a viable performance, opening new opportunities for aquaculture in northern Chile.

We herein investigated the influence of temperature on the embryonic development (from fertilisation to hatching) of Mugil liza larvae. For this purpose, oocytes (>600 µm) and sperm were obtained from breeding stock at the laboratory of marine fish culture (LAPMAR). After fertilisation, 1200 eggs were distributed in 12 cylindrical experimental units of 400 mL under four different temperatures 18, 22, 26 and 30 ºC, all in triplicate. Every 15 min until hatching, about 10 eggs were randomly sampled in each treatment. The eggs were visualized and photographed, and the classification of embryonic stages was performed. Temperature influenced the main events of the embryonic development of M. liza. More accelerated development was observed according to the increase in temperature until the gastrula phase. At temperatures of 22 and 26 °C, embryonic development occurred from fertilisation to hatching of the larvae. In the 18 °C treatment, it was verified that most of the embryos ceased development during the final phase of cleavage and the beginning of blastula formation, while in the 30 °C treatment patterns of embryo malformation were also verified, with erratic divisions of the blastomeres, resulting in irregular cells. Unlike what was observed at a temperature of 18 °C, none of the embryos incubated at 30 °C reached the blastopore closure phase, stopping in the gastrula. The larvae hatched in the treatments at 22 and 26 °C were viable and exhibited intense swimming, with a large amount of reserve material (yolk) and an evident drop of oil.

Penaeus paulensis (pink shrimp) is an important resource for small-scale fisheries in the brackish coastal lagoons of Uruguay. No viral diseases have been detected in shrimp populations in the Uruguayan territory. The presence of viral pathogens, such as White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) and Infectious Hypodermal Haematopoietic Necrosis Virus (IHHNV) in wild shrimp populations has been previously reported in Brazil and Argentina. We investigated the presence of WSSV in wild populations of penaeid shrimp from Rocha Lagoon, Uruguay. We sampled 70 specimens of juvenile P. paulensis and assessed the presence of these viral pathogens using nested PCR and histology. Gill tissue from the 70 samples was divided into 14 pools of 5 individuals for DNA extraction and PCR analysis. We also retested each pooled sample individually. The nested PCR procedure described in the WOAH aquatic animal manual was used. A subset of 20 individual specimens were also processed using standard histological techniques. The results showed that WSSV was not detected in the pooled or individually tested samples. We found no evidence of the presence of the viral genome or gill lesions in the samples analysed. This indicates that the fishery is still likely to be free of WSSV infection. The procedures and information generated can be used as a baseline study for future implementation of surveillance programmes in the country.

The aquaculture industry requires green solutions to solve several environmental challenges, including adequate wastewater remediation and natural drug applications to treat bacteria- and virus-related diseases. This study investigated the feasibility of cultivating the dinoflagellate Durusdinium glynnii in aquaculture wastewater from shrimp rearing in a synbiotic system (AWW-SS), with different dilutions of f/2 medium (FM). Interestingly, D. glynnii demonstrated enhanced growth in all AWW-SS treatments compared to the control (FM). The highest growth rates were achieved at AWW-SS:FM dilutions of 75:25 and 50:50. The removal of total nitrogen and total phosphorus reached 50.1 and 71.7%, respectively, of the crude AWW-SS. Biomass extracts of D. glynnii grown with AWW-SS were able to inhibit the growth of the bacteria Vibrio parahaemolyticus (inhibition zone of 10.0 ± 1.7 mm) and V. vulnificus (inhibition zone of 11.7 ± 1.5 mm). The presented results demonstrate that the dinoflagellate D. glynnii is a potential candidate for the development of circularity for sustainable aquaculture production, particularly by producing anti-Vibrio compounds at a near-zero cost.

Brewer's spent yeast (BSY), derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae used in beer production, is a valuable protein source for aquafeeds. Estimations of apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) for nutrients in BSY are crucial for its inclusion in aquafeeds. ADC estimations for Saccharomyces cerevisiae protein in rainbow are hardly comparable from a methodological point of view, whereas the ADC estimations for BSY protein in Atlantic salmon are only based on stripped feces, which are known to produce underestimations. Therefore, new determinations of ADC of BSY nutrients are necessary for the inclusion of this ingredient in practical diets for salmonids. This study is focused on determining unbiased ADC values for protein and energy from BSY in juvenile Salmo salar. To reduce systematic biases, fecal samples were collected using stripping and decantation methods, which are known to produce under-and overestimations, respectively. 780 fish (25.16 ± 4.88 g) were stocked in six tanks. A reference diet (50% protein, 20% lipid, 1% Cr2O3) was provided to three tanks, and a test diet (70,30 reference diet to BSY) to the other three. ADC for BSY protein was 84.70 ± 1.04% (decantation) and 70.50 ± 4.03% (stripping). For gross energy, stripped feces yielded an ADC of 52.04 ± 5.30%, while decantation resulted in 63.80 ± 1.17%. Thus, ADC estimates were taken as the average of the stripping-value and the decantation-value, resulting in 77.6% for BSY crude protein, which is appreciably higher than previously measured values in S. salar fed undisrupted S. cerevisiae, and in 57.9% for gross energy.

The mangrove bivalves, Anadara tuberculosa and Anadara similis, are pivotal for the Colombian Pacific coast mangrove ecosystems and economies. In this study, the current and future potential distribution of these bivalves is modeled considering climate change. The future models (2030 and 2050) were projected considering the new climate scenarios (SSP1, SSP2, and SSP5) proposed by the IPCC in its sixth report. Our findings reveal areas in the Colombian Pacific coast, notably Nariño, Cauca, southern Valle del Cauca, and Chocó, with high environmental suitability for these bivalves. However, the 2050 projections, especially under the pessimistic SSP5 scenario, indicate potential adverse impacts from climate change. By 2030 and 2050, the species might lean more toward a southwesterly distribution in the Colombian Pacific coast. Climate-induced spatiotemporal mismatches could occur between the bivalves and the mangroves in some areas. These insights are crucial for effective conservation and management strategies for these species.

In Chile, Piscirickettsia salmonis contains two genetically isolated genogroups, LF-89 and EM-90. However, the impact of a potential co-infection with these two variants on Salmonid Rickettsial Septicemia (SRS) in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) remains largely unexplored. In our study, we evaluated the effect of P. salmonis LF-89-like and EM-90-like co-infection on post-smolt Atlantic salmon after an intraperitoneal challenge to compare changes in disease dynamics and host immune response. Co-infected fish had a significantly lower survival rate (24.1%) at 21 days post-challenge (dpc), compared with EM-90-like single-infected fish (40.3%). In contrast, all the LF-89-like single-infected fish survived. In addition, co-infected fish presented a higher presence of clinical lesions than any of the single-infected fish. The gene expression of salmon immune-related biomarkers evaluated in the head kidney, spleen, and liver showed that the EM-90-like isolate and the co-infection induced the up-regulation of cytokines (e.g., il-1ß, ifnγ, il8, il10), antimicrobial peptides (hepdicin) and pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), such as TLR5s. Furthermore, in serum samples from EM-90-like and co-infected fish, an increase in the total IgM level was observed. Interestingly, specific IgM against P. salmonis showed greater detection of EM-90-like antigens in LF-89-like infected fish serum (cross-reaction). These data provide evidence that P. salmonis LF-89-like and EM-90-like interactions can modulate SRS disease dynamics in Atlantic salmon, causing a synergistic effect that increases the severity of the disease and the mortality rate of the fish. Overall, this study contributes to achieving a better understanding of P. salmonis population dynamics.

Enlargement of the thyroid gland is referred to as goiter. In captive fish, goiter may be associated with iodine deficiency in water or diet, exposure to goitrogenic factors such as a high environmental nitrate concentration or water treatment with ozone. This report describes the occurrence of goiter in a marine ornamental fish raised in a research laboratory, the Brazilian basslet Gramma brasiliensis. From 2016 to 2023, we observed progressively growing tumour-like masses in the pharyngeal cavity and along the gill arches of approximately 20 adult individuals. This abnormal growth impaired the ingestion of food and caused dyspnoea, leading the animals to death within a few months after the first appearance of the mass. The samples were submitted to histological analyses, which revealed moderate to severe, diffuse, hypertrophy and hyperplasia of thyroid follicular cells with most lacking colloids. This is the first report of goiter in the Brazilian basslet. Although it is not clear why this condition develops in this species, we recommend keeping nitrate levels to a minimum and monitoring water iodine concentrations regularly until future studies investigate the possible causes and adequate treatment for this species.


O aumento da glândula tireóide é conhecido como bócio. Em peixes em cativeiro, o bócio pode estar associado à deficiência de iodo na água ou na dieta, à exposição a fatores goitrogênicos, como alta concentração de nitrato ou ao tratamento da água com ozônio. O presente relato descreve a ocorrência de bócio em um peixe ornamental marinho criado em laboratório de pesquisa, o Gramma brasiliensis. De 2016 a 2023, observamos crescimento progressivo de massas semelhantes a tumores na cavidade faríngea e ao longo dos arcos branquiais de aproximadamente 20 indivíduos adultos. Esse crescimento anormal prejudicou a ingestão de alimentos e causou dispneia, levando os animais à morte em poucos meses, desde o início do aparecimento das massas. As amostras foram submetidas à análise histológica, evidenciando hipertrofia e hiperplasia moderada a grave, difusa, de células foliculares tireoidianas, sendo a maioria delas desprovida de colóide. Este é o primeiro relato de bócio em grama brasileiro. Apesar da razão pouco clara para o desenvolvimento desta condição nesta espécie, recomendamos manter os níveis de nitrato ao mínimo e monitorar regularmente as concentrações de iodo na água até que próximos estudos investiguem as possíveis causas e o tratamento adequado para esta espécie.

This study aimed to perform in vitro antiparasitic and antimicrobial tests with the essential oil (EO) of Schinus terebinthifolius against of fish and shrimp. The chemical composition of the EO of S. terebinthifolius was determined by gas chromatography. For the antiparasitic test, the protozoan Epistylis sp. obtained from parasitized Oreochromis niloticus was used, and exposed to different concentrations of EO (2%, 1%, 0.5%, 0.25%), and control with 1% grain alcohol. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) test with EO of S. terebinthifolius evaluated the antimicrobial potential, with serial dilutions starting at 2% and control with 1% grain alcohol, using the strains of Aeromonas hydrophila (2.2 × 108 CFU mL-1), Edwardsiella tarda, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, V. harveyi, and V. alginolyticus (2.0 × 108 CFU mL-1). Chemical analysis revealed that the major EO compounds of S. terebinthifolius were δ-3-Carene (56.00%) and α-Pinene (16.89%). In the antiparasitic test, the concentration of 2% EO showed 100% efficacy against Epistylis sp. within 5 min. In the antimicrobial tests, the concentration of 2% EO was effective against all bacteria tested. The EO of S. terebinthifolius demonstrated antiparasitic and antimicrobial activity at a concentration of 2%, standing out as an alternative to conventional antibiotics.

Comprehending the immune defense mechanisms of new aquaculture species, such as the Chilean meagre (Cilus gilberti), is essential for sustaining large-scale production. Two bioassays were conducted to assess the impact of acute and intermittent hypoxia on the antibacterial activity of juvenile Chilean meagre epidermal mucus against the potential pathogens Vibrio anguillarum and Vibrio ordalii. Lysozyme and peroxidase activities were also measured. In general, fish exposed to hypoxia showed a 9-30% reduction in mucus antibacterial activity at the end of hypoxic periods and after stimulation with lipopolysaccharide. However, following water reoxygenation, the activity of non-stimulated fish was comparable to that of fish in normoxic conditions, inhibiting bacterial growth by 35-52%. In the case of fish exposed to chronic hypoxia, the response against V. anguillarum increased by an additional 19.8% after 6 days of control inoculation. Lysozyme exhibited a similar pattern, while no modulation of peroxidase activity was detected post-hypoxia. These results highlight the resilience of C. gilberti to dissolved oxygen fluctuations and contribute to understanding the potential of mucus in maintaining the health of cultured fish and the development of future control strategies.

Protein kinases are enzymes involved in essential biological processes such as signal transduction, transcription, metabolism, and the cell cycle. Human kinases are targets for several drugs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Therefore, the identification and classification of kinases in other organisms, including pathogenic parasites, is an interesting subject of study. Monogeneans are platyhelminths, mainly ectoparasites, capable of causing health problems in farmed fish. Although some genomes and transcriptomes are available for monogenean species, their full repertoire of kinases is unknown. The aim of this study was to identify and classify the putative kinases in the transcriptomes of two monogeneans, Rhabdosynochus viridisi and Scutogyrus longicornis, and then to predict potential monogenean drug targets (MDTs) and selective inhibitor drugs using computational approaches. Monogenean kinases having orthologs in the lethal phenotype of C. elegans but not in fish or humans were considered MDTs. A total of 160 and 193 kinases were identified in R. viridisi and S. longicornis, respectively. Of these, 22 kinases, belonging mainly to the major groups CAMK, AGC, and TK, were classified as MDTs, five of which were evaluated further. Molecular docking analysis indicated that dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, and lomitapide have the highest affinity for the kinases BRSK and MEKK1. These well-known drugs could be evaluated in future studies for potential repurposing as anti-monogenean agents. The present study contributes valuable data for the development of new antiparasitic candidates for finfish aquaculture.

The potential of bitter orange peel powder (BOPP) as a nutritional strategy for fish was investigated in Nile tilapia. A total of 120 juveniles with an average initial weight of 9.8 ± 0.7 g were divided into four groups, replicated three times, resulting in 12 experimental units (60 L each) at a stocking density of 1.63 g of fish per liter. Productive parameters, whole-body composition, blood biochemistry, erythroid morphometry, intestinal histology, and heat tolerance were assessed in the juveniles subjected to one of the following treatments: non-supplemented basal diet (control group); basal diet with BOPP at 10 g/kg (BOPP10 group); basal diet with BOPP at 20 g/kg (BOPP20 group); and basal diet with BOPP at 40 g/kg (BOPP40 group). The BOPP additive had a positive influence on Nile tilapia growth, as final weight and weight gain were greater in all BOPP-treated fish, despite the reduction in crude protein in BOPP10 and BOPP20 groups. Fish receiving BOPP40 had an increase in total lipids and showed the highest levels of triglycerides and total cholesterol. Villi development was greater in the tilapia given BOPP10. It may be concluded that BOPP presented the most promising results for Nile tilapia juveniles when used at 10 g/kg diet. Regarding the erythroid morphometry, there was a general increase in nuclear and cytoplasmic areas in BOPP-fed tilapia; this seems to be the first report on the direct impact of the inclusion of functional additives in fish diet upon such parameters. As concerns the thermal tolerance evaluated at the end of the feeding trial, no differences were registered among the experimental groups. Thus, BOPP represents a feasible alternative ingredient to be explored in fish nutrition, since orange peel is a natural low-cost source of essential nutrients and valuable bioactive compounds.

The excessive use of conventional antibiotics has resulted in significant aquatic pollution and a concerning surge in drug-resistant bacteria. Efforts have been consolidated to explore and develop environmentally friendly antimicrobial alternatives to mitigate the imminent threat posed by multi-resistant pathogens. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have gained prominence due to their low propensity to induce bacterial resistance, attributed to their multiple mechanisms of action and synergistic effects. Microalgae, particularly cyanobacteria, have emerged as promising alternatives with antibiotic potential to address these challenges. The aim of this review is to present some AMPs extracted from microalgae, emphasizing their activity against common pathogens and elucidating their mechanisms of action, as well as their potential application in the aquaculture industry. Likewise, the biosynthesis, advantages and disadvantages of the use of AMPs are described. Currently, biotechnology tolls are used to enhance the action of these peptides, such as genetically modified microalgae and recombinant proteins. Cyanobacteria are also mentioned as major producers of peptides, among them, the genus Lyngbya is described as the most important producer of bioactive peptides with potential therapeutic use. The majority of cyanobacterial AMPs are of the cyclic type, meaning that they have cysteine and disulfide bridges, thanks to this, their greater antimicrobial activity and selectivity. Likewise, we found that large hydrophobic aromatic amino acid residues increase specificity, and improve antibacterial efficacy. However, based on the results of this review, it is possible to highlight that while microalgae show potential as a source of AMPs, further research in this field is necessary to achieve safe and competitive production. Therefore, the data presented here can aid in the selection of microalgal species, peptide structures, and target bacteria, with the goal of establishing biotechnological platforms for aquaculture applications.

Latin America (LATAM) plays an important role in the world's production of aquatic animals and is the second most productive region in the world. Chile, Ecuador, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Perú contribute 87% of LATAM aquaculture production. The fish welfare in aquaculture is of increasing public concern globally, and LATAM is no exception, growing in importance for fish farmers, authorities, and scientists. Although the topic is somewhat controversial, the welfare status of farmed fish has direct implications for their production and the sustainability of the industry. Therefore, this study analyses scientific papers on animal welfare in farmed fish, from the six countries in LATAM with the highest aquaculture production. The main objectives were to quantify the number of papers published between 2000 and 2023 on fish welfare by using scientific databases. A total of 285 papers were found for the period analysed. The country with the largest number of publications was Brazil (75.79%), followed by Chile (13.33%), Mexico (7.02%), Peru (1.75%), Ecuador, and Colombia (1.05%). Nile tilapia was the most studied species, appearing in 30.18% of the publications, with most of the studies mainly dealing with nutrition (32.28%). The growth of aquaculture is leading to joint efforts to generate knowledge on welfare issues, especially in poorly studied species with high production, to create policies that help minimize welfare risks. Given this, the insights generated by this review could be a useful addition to approaches investigating the trends and concepts of fish welfare in LATAM.

This study investigates Cystobasidium benthicum (Cb) probiotic yeast and Cyrtocarpa edulis (Ce) fruit dietary effects, single (0.5 %) or combined (Cb:Ce, 0.25:0.25 %), on growth performance, humoral immunity in serum and skin mucus, and intestinal morphology of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) after 14 and 28 days. The Cb group presented the highest (P < 0.05) specific growth rate, weight gain, and absolute growth rate with respect to the control group. Immunological assays indicated that Cb, Ce and Cb:Ce groups increased serum nitric oxide concentration compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Cb and Cb:Ce groups showed the highest serum myeloperoxidase enzyme activity at day 14 and 28, respectively (P < 0.05); whereas, Cb:Ce group had the highest (P < 0.05) myeloperoxidase activity in skin mucus. The superoxide dismutase enzyme activity was unaffected. On day 28, Cb, Ce, and Cb:Ce groups showed higher and lower (P < 0.05) catalase enzyme activity in serum and skin mucus, respectively, compared with the control group. Only the Cb group had higher (P < 0.05) total protein concentration in serum (day 14) and skin mucus (day 14 and 28) with respect to the control group. The lysozyme activity in serum (day 28) and skin mucus (day 14) was higher (P < 0.05) in the Cb group compared to the control group. Only the skin mucus of Ce group showed bactericidal activity against Aeromonas dhakensis (P < 0.05). Histological studies indicated that Cb and Cb:Ce groups increased microvilli height, and Cb, Ce and Cb:Ce augmented goblet cell area at day 14 compared to the control group (P < 0.05). At day 28, microvilli height was higher in all groups and the number of intraepithelial leukocytes increased in Cb and Ce groups with respect to the control group (P < 0.05). The ex vivo assay revealed that A. dhakensis in leukocytes decreased cell viability similar to the control group (P < 0.05). A principal component analysis (PCA) confirmed the results. In conclusion, C. benthicum in the diet was the best supplement to improve the growth and immunity of Nile tilapia.

The Lebranche mullet Mugil liza is a marine fish of great importance for artisanal and industrial fishing, as well as aquaculture. The use of live feeds during the larviculture phase of marine fish is a significant component of production costs. The present study evaluated the effects of the feeding transition on different larval stages of M. liza, from the combined supply of live feed (Brachionus rotundiformis + Artemia franciscana) and live + inert feed (Artemia franciscana + inert diet) until the weaning phase to only the inert diet. A total of 3240 M. liza larvae (weight 0.0133 ± 0.0062 g and length 0.793 ± 0.160 cm) were distributed among the 12 experimental units (n = 270), resulting in four groups with three replicates each. Treatment groups consisted of feed transition with A. franciscana (enriched metanauplii) to commercial inert feed starting weaning at four different larval ages: 28, 31, 34, and 37 days post hatching. Zootechnical performance indexes and intestinal histomorphometry were evaluated. Mortality, condition factor, and length variation coefficient did not show significant differences between treatments. Final weight, final length, weight gain, and length gain were significantly greater in larvae that started weaning at 31, 34, and 37 days post hatching. Weight coefficient of variation was significantly higher in larvae that started weaning at 28 days (67.51 ± 11.70) compared to 37 days (34.40 ± 7.30). In intestinal histology, villi height (180.3 ± 4.4) was significantly higher in larvae that started weaning at 37 days post hatching. Considering the evidence found in the present study, it is recommended to start weaning M. liza on the 31st day post-hatching, using a 2-day co-feeding protocol (31st and 32nd days). From the 33rd day after hatching, M. liza larvae can receive only commercial feed.

To evaluate the antioxidant activity and oxidative damage by relaxing, wounding, and seeding of a saibo of different origin on Pteria sterna hosts, five oyster treatments were included: (1) relaxed (REL) but neither wounded nor seeded; (2) relaxed and wounded (WOU) but not seeded; (3) relaxed, wounded, and seeded with an allograft (ALL); (4) relaxed, wounded, and seeded with an autograft (AUT); and (5) unrelaxed, unwounded, and unseeded as control (CTR). Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) activity were quantified between 3 and 24 h post-seeding. Compared to the CTR oysters, which did not suffer oxidative stress, SOD activity significantly decreased in the gonad and digestive gland in all treatments and decreased in mantle tissue in AUT oysters; this indicates that the entire process of preparing oysters for pearl culture (relaxing, wounding, and seeding) generates oxidative stress in the host. CAT was not a sensitive enzyme for measuring the short-term response of oysters to the wounding-seeding processes but rather a more prolonged or chronic stress. Similar to SOD, the lowest GPx and TBARS activity in seeded oysters evidenced their susceptibility to oxidative stress and damage, particularly in the WOU treatment. Evidence from this study indicates that SOD is a more sensitive enzyme for measuring the short-term response of the host oyster to the wounding and seeding of a saibo. It is also clear that the host undergoes stress at all stages of the pearl culture process, mostly during gonad wounding and regardless of the origin of saibo.

This article assesses the environmental impacts of aquatic biota cultivation, focusing on shrimp farming in Brazil's Northeast, as this practice has proven to be one of the main sources of economic growth in the region. For this purpose, sediment samples were collected from areas impacted and not directly impacted by shrimp farming, and concentrations of key geochemical parameters such as salinity, various elements (K, P, Cu, Mn, Pb, Zn, Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, and Na), and natural radionuclides (K-40, Ra-226 and Ra-228) were compared using statistical tools. Element concentrations were determined using ICP-OES, and naturally occurring radionuclide concentrations were obtained through gamma spectrometry. Statistical tests, such as ANOVA and/or Mann-Whitney, cluster analysis, and principal component analysis, were applied to the results. Additionally, the ERICA Tool software was employed to estimate deleterious effects on both human and non-human biota. Descriptive statistics reveal variability in sediment parameters around shrimp farming. ANOVA and Mann-Whitney tests compare concentrations of shrimp farm sediment and not directly impacted sediment, showing non-significant differences for most elements. pH and salinity, crucial for shrimp health, exhibit higher values in shrimp farm sediment. Alkali and alkaline earth metals, including K and Na, show no significant differences. Factor and cluster analyses suggest that certain elements, mainly radionuclides, are influenced by sediment variability. Hazard indices for naturally occurring radionuclides indicate negligible risk to both human and non-human biota, reinforcing the absence of adverse effects from shrimp farming activities. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the environmental impacts of shrimp farming, emphasizing the importance of monitoring geochemical parameters for coastal environmental management.
