RESUMO

Infrared thermography may be an alternative technology for measuring the amount of CH4 produced and has the advantages of low cost, speed and efficiency in obtaining results. The study's objective was to determine if the infrared thermography is adequate for predicting the emission of CH4 in hair sheep and the best time after feeding to carry out the measurement. Twelve Santa Inês lambs (females, non-pregnant, with twelve months old and mean body weight of 39.3 ± 2.1 kg) remained for two days in respirometric chambers, in a semi-closed system, to determine the CH4 production. The animals were divided into two treatments, according to the diet provided. During this period, seven thermographic photographs were taken, at times - 1 h, -0.5 h, 0 h, 0.5 h, 1 h, 2 h, 3 h, 5 h, and 7 h, according to the feeding time, defined as 0 h. CH4 production was measured over 24 h. Thermographic images measured the maximum, minimum, average and point temperatures at the left and right flanks. The temperature difference between the left and right flanks (left minus right) was calculated each time. Pearson correlation coefficients, multiple regression and principal component analysis were carried out in SAS®. The best prediction of emission intensity of CH4 (kg of CH4 per dry matter intake) was obtained at 3 h after feeding: CH4/DMI = 13.9016-0,38673 * DifP2 + 3.39089 * DifMed2 (R² = 0.48), using the difference between left and right flanks for point and average temperature measures. Therefore, infrared thermography can be used as an indicator of CH4 production in hair sheep three hours after feeding.

RESUMO

The CH4 storage by adsorption on activated carbons for natural gas handling has gained interest due to the appearance of lightweight materials with large surface areas and pore volumes. Consequently, kinetic parameters estimation of the adsorptive process can play a crucial role in understanding and scaling up the system. Concerning its versatility, banana peel (BP) is a biomass with potential for obtaining different products, such as biochar, a solid residue from the biomass' thermal decomposition of difficult disposal, where through an activation process, the material porous features are taken advantage to application as adsorbent of gaseous substances. This research reported data for the CH4 adsorption kinetic modeling by biochar from BP pyrolysis. The activated biochar textural characterization showed particles with fine mesoporous structure (pore diameter ranging between 29.39 and 55.62 Å). Adsorption kinetic analysis indicated that a modified pseudo-first-order model was the most suitable to represent the experimental data, with equilibrium adsorption of 28 mg g-1 for the samples activated with 20.0% vol wt.-1 of H3PO4 and pyrolysis at 500 °C. The equilibrium constant was consistent with the Freundlich isotherm model, suggesting a physisorption mechanism, and led to a non-ideal, reversible, and not limited to monolayer CH4 adsorption.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of total mixed ration particle size (length) and breed of cow on intake dynamics, animal performance and CH4 emissions, comparing high yielding Holstein and low yielding Girolando cows. The experimental design was 2 × 2 Latin Square arranged as a crossover factorial scheme with two diets (short particle size, SPS and long particle size, LPS) and the two breed compositions. The design comprised two periods of 26 d each, where all data collection was performed at cow level. No influence of the particle size occurred for the passage rate, neutral detergent fiber digestibility, performance and milk composition, methane emissions or ruminal fermentation parameters. Girolando cows had greater dry matter intake (DMI) when fed SPS, while Holsteins had the same (P < 0.05). Girolando cows had lower dry matter digestibility when fed LPS compared to SPS, while Holsteins had the opposite effect (P < 0.05). Also, the digestibility of crude protein and non-fibrous carbohydrates decreased in Girolando cows fed LPS, but not in Holsteins (P < 0.05). Girolando cows reduced DMI by 10.6% when fed LPS diet (P < 0.05). Girolando had an increased eating rate (+24 g of DM/min; P < 0.05) compared to Holstein cows, but Holstein cows had a lower CH4 intensity (by 29.7%: P < 0.05). Girolando cows increased the dry matter intake when fed a diet with short particle size, while the same did not happen in Holsteins. Dry matter digestibility increased in Holsteins when fed long particle size, while the opposite was observed in Girolando cows. Nutrient digestibility was reduced in Girolando cows when fed short particle size. Particle size did not influence eating time, eating rate, feed trough visits, visits with intake, milk yield and composition regardless of the breed. Reducing particle size increased CH4 intensity in both breeds.

RESUMO

Complex cross-talk occurs between gastrointestinal nematodes and gut symbiotic microbiota, with consequences for animal metabolism. To investigate the connection between methane production and endoparasites, this study evaluated the effect of mixed infection with Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis on methanogenic and methanotrophic community in rumen microbiota of lambs using shotgun metagenomic and real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR). The rumen content was collected from six Santa Inês lambs, (7 months old) before and after 42 days infection by esophageal tube. The metagenomic analysis showed that the infection affected the microbial community structure leading to decreased abundance of methanotrophs bacteria, i.e. α-proteobacteria and ß-proteobacteria, anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME), protozoa, sulfate-reducing bacteria, syntrophic bacteria with methanogens, geobacter, and genes related to pyruvate, fatty acid, nitrogen, and sulfur metabolisms, ribulose monophosphate cycle, and Entner-Doudoroff Pathway. Additionally, the abundance of methanogenic archaea and the mcrA gene did not change. The co-occurrence networks enabled us to identify the interactions between each taxon in microbial communities and to determine the reshaping of rumen microbiome associations by gastrointestinal nematode infection. Besides, the correlation between ANMEs was lower in the animal's postinfection. Our findings suggest that gastrointestinal parasites potentially lead to decreased methanotrophic metabolism-related microorganisms and genes.

RESUMO

Riparian buffer systems (RBS) are a common agroforestry practice that involves maintaining a forested boundary adjacent to water bodies to protect the aquatic ecosystems in agricultural landscapes. While RBS have potential for carbon sequestration, they also can be sources of methane emissions. Our study site at Washington Creek in Southern Ontario, includes a rehabilitated tree buffer (RH), a grassed buffer (GRB), an undisturbed deciduous forest (UNF), an undisturbed coniferous forest (CF), and an adjacent agricultural field (AGR). The objective of this study was to assess the diversity and activity of CH4 cycling microbial communities in soils sampled during hot moments of methane fluxes (July 04 and August 15). We used qPCR and high-throughput amplicon sequencing from both DNA and cDNA to target methanogen and methanotroph communities. Methanogens, including the archaeal genera Methanosaeta, Methanosarcina, Methanomassiliicoccus, and Methanoreggula, were abundant in all RBSs, but they were significantly more active in UNF soils, where CH4 emissions were highest. Methylocystis was the most prevalent taxon among methanotrophs in all the riparian sites, except for AGR soils where the methanotrophs community was composed primarily of members of rice paddy clusters (RPCs and RPC-1) and upland soil clusters (TUSC and USCα). The main factors influencing the composition and assembly of methane-cycling microbiomes were soil carbon and moisture content. We concluded that the differences in CH4 fluxes observed between RBSs were primarily caused by differences in the presence and activity of methanogens, which were influenced by total soil carbon and water content. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of understanding the microbial drivers of CH4 fluxes in RBSs in order to maximize RBS environmental benefits.

RESUMO

Climate change is a very relevant and worrying topic today and is present in the agendas of different spheres of society. High concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) are released into the atmosphere, causing global temperatures to rise. In agricultural production, methane (CH4) is considered one of the highest GHG emissions, causing a negative impact on natural resources and accelerating climate change. In the coming years, with the increase in the world population, food production should be implemented in self-sufficient, quality, and sustainable production systems to meet the need for high consumption. The reduction in CH4 production is related to the better efficiency of energy use of the feed by the animals; therefore, the knowledge of the ruminal fermentation parameters, identification of the ruminal microbiota, and selection of more efficient animals, with lower consumption and greater weight gain, in addition to producing less GHGs like CH4, have a less negative impact on the environment and are economically viable. This review presents some aspects of selection for feed efficiency in sheep as a strategy to mitigate GHG emission and some techniques for measuring these gases.

Mangroves are one of the most important but threatened blue carbon ecosystems globally. Rapid urban growth has resulted in nutrient inputs and subsequent coastal eutrophication, associated with an enrichment in organic matter (OM) from algal and sewage sources and substantial changes in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, the effects of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) enrichment on mangrove soil OM composition and GHG emissions, such as methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), are still poorly understood. Here, we aim to evaluate the relationships between CO2 and CH4 efflux with OM composition in exposed soils from three mangrove areas along watersheds with different urbanization levels (Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil). To assess spatial (lower vs. upper intertidal zones) and seasonal (summer vs. winter) variability, we measured soil-air CO2 and CH4 fluxes at low spring tide, analyzing elementary (C, N, and P), isotopic (δ13C and δ15N), and the molecular (n-alkanes and sterols) composition of surface soil OM. A general trend of OM composition was found with increasing urban influence, with higher δ15N (proxy of anthropogenic N enrichment), less negative δ13C, more short-chain n-alkanes, lower C:N ratio (proxies of algal biomass), and higher epicoprostanol content (proxies of sewage-derived OM). The CO2 efflux from exposed soils increased greatly in median (25/75 % interquartile range) from 4.6 (2.9/8.3) to 24.0 (21.5/32.7) mmol m-2 h-1 from more pristine to more urbanized watersheds, independent of intertidal zone and seasonality. The CO2 fluxes at the most eutrophicated site were among the highest reported worldwide for mangrove soils. Conversely, CH4 emissions were relatively low (three orders of magnitude lower than CO2 fluxes), with high peaks in the lower intertidal zone during the rainy summer. Thus, our findings demonstrate the influence of coastal eutrophication on global warming potentials related to enhanced heterotrophic remineralization of blue carbon within mangrove soils.

RESUMO

This work investigates the interplay of carbonization temperature and the chemical composition of carbon microfibers (CMFs), and their impact on the equilibration time and adsorption of three molecules (N2, CO2, and CH4). PAN derived CMFs were synthesized by electrospinning and calcined at three distinct temperatures (600, 700 and 800 °C), which led to samples with different textural and chemical properties assessed by FTIR, TGA/DTA, XRD, Raman, TEM, XPS, and N2 adsorption. We examine why samples calcined at low/moderate temperatures (600 and 700 °C) show an open hysteresis loop in nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms at -196.15 °C. The equilibrium time in adsorption measurements is nearly the same for these samples, despite their distinct chemical compositions. Increasing the equilibrium time did not allow for the closure of the hysteresis loop, but by rising the analysis temperature this was achieved. By means of the isosteric enthalpy of adsorption measurements and ab initio calculations, adsorbent/adsorbate interactions for CO2, CH4 and N2 were found to be inversely proportional to the temperature of carbonization of the samples (CMF-600 > CMF-700 > CMF-800). The enhancement of adsorbent/adsorbate interaction at lower carbonization temperatures is directly related to the presence of nitrogen and oxygen functional groups on the surface of CMFs. Nonetheless, a higher concentration of heteroatoms also causes: (i) a reduction in the adsorption capacity of CO2 and CH4 and (ii) open hysteresis loops in N2 adsorption at cryogenic temperatures. Therefore, the calcination of PAN derived microfibers at temperatures above 800 °C is recommended, which results in materials with suitable micropore volume and a low content of surface heteroatoms, leading to high CO2 uptake while keeping acceptable selectivity with regards to CH4 and moderate adsorption enthalpies.

RESUMO

Methane is a short-lived greenhouse gas (GHG) modelled distinctly from long-lived GHGs such as carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide to establish global emission budgets for climate stabilisation. The Paris Agreement requires a 24-47% reduction in global biogenic methane emissions by 2050. Separate treatment of methane in national climate policies will necessitate consideration of how global emission budgets compatible with climate stabilisation can be downscaled to national targets, but implications of different downscaling rules for national food production and climate neutrality objectives are poorly understood. This study addresses that knowledge gap by examining four methods to determine national methane quotas, and two methods of GHG aggregation (GWP100 and GWP*) across four countries with contrasting agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU) sectors and socio-economic contexts (Brazil, France, India and Ireland). Implications for production of methane-intensive food (milk, meat, eggs and rice) in 2050 and national AFOLU climate neutrality targets are explored. It is assumed that methane quotas are always filled by food production where sufficient land is available. Global methane budgets for 1.5 °C scenarios are downscaled to national quotas based on: grand-parenting (equal percentage reductions across countries); equity (equal per capita emissions); ability (emission reductions proportionate to GDP); animal protein security (emissions proportionate to animal protein production in 2010). The choice of allocation method changes national methane quotas by a factor of between 1.7 (India) and 6.7 (Ireland). Despite projected reductions in emission-intensities, livestock production would need to decrease across all countries except India to comply with quotas under all but the most optimistic sustainable intensification scenarios. The extent of potential afforestation on land spared from livestock production is decisive in achieving climate neutrality. Brazil and Ireland could maintain some degree of milk and beef export whilst achieving territorial climate neutrality, but scenarios that comply with climate neutrality in India produce only circa 30% of national calorie and protein requirements via rice and livestock. The downscaling of global methane budgets into national policy targets in an equitable and internationally acceptable manner will require simultaneous consideration of the interconnected priorities of food security and (land banks available for) carbon offsetting.

RESUMO

A previously developed surface probe method, which allows for instantaneous methane (CH4) flux measurement, was used to establish CH4 emission maps of a municipal landfill with a final clay cover and equipped with a gas recollection system. In addition to spatial variations, the method was applied at 7 different times over a total timeframe of 65 h and under similar weather conditions to determine the intrinsic temporal variations of CH4 emissions; i.e., the temporal variation related to the dynamic of the landfill rather than the one driven by external factors. Furthermore, continuous CH4 fluxes, with a data acquisition frequency of 1 Hz, were measured during 12 h at a single position, and for one hour at 22 locations of the landfill, spanning a large range of CH4 emission magnitudes. A simple model for the numerical characterization of spatiotemporal variability of the landfill emission was used and allowed us to separately quantify the temporal and spatial variability. This model showed that, in the landfill tested, the temporal distribution of CH4 emissions resulted more homogeneous than the spatial distribution. Other attributes of the temporal and spatial distributions of CH4 emissions were also established including the anisotropic nature of the spatial distribution and, contrastingly, the stochastic temporal variability of such emissions.

RESUMO

The effect of pasture management on CH4 emissions was investigated from goats in a tropical climate. Two experiments were conducted in a "Tanzania Guinea grass" (Panicum maximum Jacq.) pasture to assess enteric CH4 production in a completely randomized design. Emissions from light, moderate, and heavy grazing intensities were analyzed in the first experiment, and variations between grazing days were explored in the second experiment. Grazing intensity was defined as 2.4, 1.6, and 0.8 post-grazing leaf area index. Pasture management employed intermittent grazing with variable stocking rate using Anglo Nubian female adult goats. SF6 tracer gas technique was used to measure CH4 production. Grazing intensity was not found to affect CH4 emissions per animal, dry matter forage intake (DMI), and gross energy (GE) intake. However, the second experiment showed that CH4 production was influenced by the grazing day. CH4 emissions were 18.1 g day-1, and the variables were 0.88 g kg-1 of metabolic weight, 17.45 g kg-1 of DMI, and 5.5% of GE. CH4 production increased linearly with the grazing day, possibly reflecting a reduction in forage quality. These findings suggest that the day of occupation in intermittent grazing has a greater effect on CH4 emissions than that by grazing intensity and that a single day grazing of Tanzania Guinea grass could mitigate CH4 emissions.

RESUMO

Based on previous reports, our study aimed to obtain the first estimate on the contribution of termite mounds to CH4 emissions in Brazilian Cerrado pastures. We estimated that termite mounds occupy an area larger than 200,000 ha in degraded pastures, an important loss of grazing area considering the current scenario of land-use change of pastures to other crops in Brazil. Moreover, mound-building termites in degraded pastures may be responsible for CH4 emissions greater than 11 Mt CO2 eq. yr−1, which would notably affect the greenhouse gases (GHG) balance of grass-fed cattle production in Brazil. In this sense, it is urgent to conduct field-scale studies about the CH4 emissions by mound-building termites in pastures and its contribution to the C footprint of Brazilian beef.

RESUMO

Forest soils are the most important terrestrial sink of atmospheric methane (CH4 ). Climatic, soil and anthropogenic drivers affect CH4 fluxes, but it is poorly known the relative weight of each driver and whether all drivers have similar effects across forest biomes. We compiled a database of 478 in situ estimations of CH4 fluxes in forest soils from 191 peer-reviewed studies. All forest biomes (boreal, temperate, tropical and subtropical) but savannahs act on average as CH4 sinks, which presented positive fluxes in 65% of the sites. Mixed effects models showed that combined climatic and edaphic variables had the best support, but anthropogenic factors did not have a significant effect on CH4 fluxes at global scale. This model explained only 19% of the variance in soil CH4 flux which decreased with declines in precipitation and increases in temperature, and with increases in soil organic carbon, bulk density and soil acidification. The effects of these drivers were inconsistent across biomes, increasing the model explanation of observed variance to 34% when the drivers have a different slope for each biome. Despite this limited explanatory value which could be related to the use of soil variables calculated at coarse scale (~1 km), our study shows that soil CH4 fluxes in forests are determined by different environmental variables in different biomes. The most sensitive system to all studied drivers were the temperate forests, while boreal forests were insensitive to climatic variables, but highly sensitive to edaphic factors. Subtropical forests and savannahs responded similarly to climatic variables, but differed in their response to soil factors. Our results suggest that the increase in temperature predicted in the framework of climate change would promote CH4 emission (or reduce CH4 sink) in subtropical and savannah forests, have no influence in boreal and temperate forests and promote uptake in tropical forests.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Zinc sulfate and propylene glycol (PG) on methane (CH4) emission, nutrient intake, digestibility, and production in sheep grazing on a native Caatinga (Brazilian semi-arid savannah) pasture during the rainy season (from March to June 2014). Fifteen mixed Santa Inês sheep, all non-castrated males, with initial body weight of 19.8 ± 1.64 kg, and 4 ± 0.35 months of age, were distributed in a complete randomized design into three treatments: control (CT)-concentrate supplemented at 0.7% of body weight; CT + 300 mg of Zn/day; and CT + 2.5 mL of propylene glycol/kg LW0.75/day. Measurements were done in four periods during the rainy season, with 28 days of interval between each measurement. CH4 emission was measured using the SF6 tracer gas technique. CH4 emission per day was greater in PG than in CT and Zn (p < 0.05). However, no additive effect was observed on the intakes of organic matter (OM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF), or on CH4 emission expressed as a function of OM and NDF intakes (p > 0.05). Across the months of the trial, OM and NDF intakes were greater in March, while the greatest emission of CH4 (g/day and g by g/OM intake) was observed in May (p < 0.05). Total CH4 emission (kg) from March to June (112 days of evaluation) was greater in PG compared with CT and Zn (p < 0.05). Zinc and PG had no effect on total CH4 emission when it was expressed per unit of body weight gain or carcass production (p > 0.05). The results of this study indicate that Zinc sulfate and propylene glycol have no beneficial effects in mitigating sheep CH4 emission. The CH4 emissions originated from sheep grazing native Caatinga pasture change throughout the rainy season due to fluctuations in availability and quality of pasture biomass. Moreover, the inclusion of zinc sulfate or propylene glycol did not improve animal feed intake, nutrient digestibility, and animal performance.

RESUMO

This study aims to quantify global CH4 and N2O footprints in 2012 in terms of 181 economies and 20 world regions based on the official national emission accounts from the UNFCCC database and the global multi-region input-output accounts from the EORA database. Global total CH4 and N2O emissions increased by 15.0% in 2012 compared to 1990, mainly driven by increasing demands of agricultural and energy products. Mainland China, Western Europe, the USA, Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa were identified as the largest five CH4 footprint contributors (55.6% of the global total), while Mainland China, the USA, Western Europe, Brazil and Sub-Saharan Africa as the largest N2O footprint contributors (59.2% of the global total). In most developed economies, the CH4 and N2O footprints were much higher than their emissions on the production side, but opposite picture is observed in emerging economies. 36.4% and 24.8% of the global CH4 and N2O emissions in 2012 were associated with international trade, respectively. Substantial energy-related CH4 and agricultural CH4 and N2O emissions were transferred from developed countries to developing countries. Several nations within Kyoto targets have reduced their CH4 and N2O emissions significantly between 1990 and 2012, but the generally-believed success is challenged when viewing from the consumption side. Mainland China, Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Brazil, Middle East and India witnessed prominent increase of CH4 and N2O footprints in the same period. The structure and spatial patterns of global CH4 and N2O footprints shed light on the role of consumption-side actions and international cooperation for future non-CO2 GHG emission reduction.

RESUMO

Wetlands are important sources of methane (CH4 ) and sinks of carbon dioxide (CO2 ). However, little is known about CH4 and CO2 fluxes and dynamics of seasonally flooded tropical forests of South America in relation to local carbon (C) balances and atmospheric exchange. We measured net ecosystem fluxes of CH4 and CO2 in the Pantanal over 2014-2017 using tower-based eddy covariance along with C measurements in soil, biomass and water. Our data indicate that seasonally flooded tropical forests are potentially large sinks for CO2 but strong sources of CH4 , particularly during inundation when reducing conditions in soils increase CH4 production and limit CO2 release. During inundation when soils were anaerobic, the flooded forest emitted 0.11 ± 0.002 g CH4 -C m-2  d-1 and absorbed 1.6 ± 0.2 g CO2 -C m-2  d-1 (mean ± 95% confidence interval for the entire study period). Following the recession of floodwaters, soils rapidly became aerobic and CH4 emissions decreased significantly (0.002 ± 0.001 g CH4 -C m-2  d-1 ) but remained a net source, while the net CO2 flux flipped from being a net sink during anaerobic periods to acting as a source during aerobic periods. CH4 fluxes were 50 times higher in the wet season; DOC was a minor component in the net ecosystem carbon balance. Daily fluxes of CO2 and CH4 were similar in all years for each season, but annual net fluxes varied primarily in relation to flood duration. While the ecosystem was a net C sink on an annual basis (absorbing 218 g C m-2 (as CH4 -C + CO2 -C) in anaerobic phases and emitting 76 g C m-2 in aerobic phases), high CH4 effluxes during the anaerobic flooded phase and modest CH4 effluxes during the aerobic phase indicate that seasonally flooded tropical forests can be a net source of radiative forcings on an annual basis, thus acting as an amplifying feedback on global warming.

RESUMO

Subsoil CH4 and CO2 concentrations, δ13C-CH4 and δ13C-CO2 signatures, total organic carbon (TOC) and δ13C-TOC, together with C/N ratio of organic matter, were evaluated throughout a soil profile up to the atmosphere to understand the dynamics of CH4 and CO2 in the waterlogged environment of an island of the Lower Delta of the Paraná River, Argentina. The analysis of the vertical profile showed that a significant fraction of CH4 exists as gas trapped within the sediment column, compared to CH4 dissolved in soil solution. CH4 concentration measurements in sub-saturated soils showed that free CH4 is 1 order of magnitude smaller than CH4 recovered from soil cores by ultrasonic degassing. The highest concentrations of CH4 occurred at the 90-120-cm layer. At this depth, δ13C-CH4 values resulting from methanogenesis were around - 71‰, which is well within the range of CH4 produced from CO2 reduction, and δ13C values of the associated CO2 were enriched (~ - 7‰). Isotope mass balance models used to calculate the fraction of oxidized CH4 indicated that around 30% of the CH4 produced was oxidized prior to atmospheric release. In contrast to methanogenesis, during oxidation processes δ13C-CH4 shifts to more positive values. The mineralogical, textural, isotopic, and geochemical characterization of subsoil sediments with abundant organic matter, like Paraná Delta, demonstrated that CH4 storage capacity of the soil, production, consumption, and transport are the main factors in regulating the actual flux rates of CH4 to the atmosphere.

RESUMO

The sub-Antarctic Magellanic ecoregion is a part of the world where ecosystems have been understudied and where the CH4 cycling and emissions in lakes has not ever been reported. To fill that knowledge gap, a lake and a reservoir located at 53°S were selected and studied during three campaigns equally distributed over one year. Among the parameters measured were CH4 and CO2 emissions, as well their dissolved concentrations in the water column, which were determined with high spatial resolution. No ebullition was observed and the CH4 flux ranged from 0.0094 to 4.47mmolm-2d-1 while the CO2 flux ranged from -22.95 to 35.68mmolm-2d-1. Dissolved CH4 concentrations varied over more than four orders of magnitude (0.025-128.75µmolL-1), and the dissolved carbon dioxide ranged from below the detection limit of our method (i.e., 0.15µmolL-1) to 379.09µmolL-1. The high spatial resolution of the methods used enabled the construction of bathymetric maps, surface contour maps of CH4 and CO2 fluxes, and transect contour maps of dissolved oxygen, temperature, and dissolved greenhouse gases. Overall, both lakes were net greenhouse gas producers and were not significantly different from temperate lakes located at a similar northern latitudes (53°N), except that ebullition was never observed in the studied sub-Antarctic lakes.

RESUMO

The flux of methane (CH4 ) from inland waters to the atmosphere has a profound impact on global atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) levels, and yet, strikingly little is known about the dynamics controlling sources and sinks of CH4 in the aquatic setting. Here, we examine the cycling and flux of CH4 in six large rivers in the Amazon basin, including the Amazon River. Based on stable isotopic mass balances of CH4 , inputs and outputs to the water column were estimated. We determined that ecosystem methane oxidation (MOX) reduced the diffusive flux of CH4 by approximately 28-96% and varied depending on hydrologic regime and general geochemical characteristics of tributaries of the Amazon River. For example, the relative amount of MOX was maximal during high water in black and white water rivers and minimal in clear water rivers during low water. The abundance of genetic markers for methane-oxidizing bacteria (pmoA) was positively correlated with enhanced signals of oxidation, providing independent support for the detected MOX patterns. The results indicate that MOX in large Amazonian rivers can consume from 0.45 to 2.07 Tg CH4 yr(-1) , representing up to 7% of the estimated global soil sink. Nevertheless, climate change and changes in hydrology, for example, due to construction of dams, can alter this balance, influencing CH4 emissions to atmosphere.

The aim of the study was evaluate the production potential for methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), short-chain fatty acids, ammonia nitrogen (N-NH3) and pH by semi-automated technique in vitro from biodiesel byproducts cottonseed cake (Gossypium hirsutum), castor bean (Ricinus communis), moringa cake (Moringa oleifera), jatropha cake (Jatropha curcas) and sunflower cake (Helianthus annuus) substituting corn silage in increasing levels, 0, 30, 50 and 70%. The experimental design used was completely randomized in a 5 x 4 factorial arrangement (byproducts and substitution levels). The inoculum for the in vitro incubations was obtained from three Holstein cows with rumen fistulas. In the experiment, the conditions were verified for the differences in potential gas production among the ingredients. The byproduct of cotton was the ingredient with the greatest potential to produce acetate, butyrate, CO2 and CH4. The byproduct of moringa had the lowest potential for the production of acetate, butyrate, CO2 and CH4 from in vitro degraded dry matter and a greater potential for the production of propionate. Among the byproducts studied, moringa was distinguished for promoting mitigation of CH4 and obtaining levels of pH and N-NH3 satisfactory for maximum rumen fermentation; thus, it is recommended the byproduct of moringa to replace corn silage because reduces environmental impact(AU)
