RESUMO
The aim of this paper is to analyze the formative and evaluative activities involving statistical graphs in the new textbooks for Chilean rural multigrade education. The methodology is qualitative, at a descriptive level and uses the content analysis technique. The sample is made up of the six primary education textbooks distributed by the Ministry of Education for rural multigrade schools. The results show the predominance of the bar chart, semiotic level 3, the task of calculating and the personal context in both types of activities, although with respect to the reading level, it is evident that level 4 predominates in the formative activities and level 2 in the evaluative ones. According to the results, it is recommended to incorporate graphs proposed by the curricular guidelines of the Ministry of Education, which are absent in textbooks as well as to include evaluative activities that require reflection on the nature of the data, context, representation and conclusions obtained from them.
RESUMO
This study aims to present a combination of methods and propose robust theoretical and conceptual frameworks for solving socio-environmental issues. This proposal included the Problem, Intervention, Context, and Outcome (PICO) framework and Protocol and Reporting result with Search, Appraisal, Synthesis, and Analysis framework, and develop (PSALSAR) method through SODIP steps: (i) Systematic review and meta-analysis defining the study from guiding questions; (ii) Open-source related to software and data; (iii) Data visualization and design information; (iv) Identification of gaps, challenges and trends through automation and lexicometric analysis; and (v) Proposal of theoretical and conceptual frameworks. This proposal defines the steps as support to combine and systematize information necessary to facilitate the production of this type of document using open-access software in the visualization and design of information. All these steps are replicable and essential to propose a conceptual and theoretical framework to contribute to the construction of knowledge in socio-environmental research and to propose solutions by filling in the gaps. In summary, this combination of methods shows:â¢The use of SODIP steps provides robustness and efficiency in carrying out review studies, facilitating the way to propose theoretical or conceptual frameworks.â¢Choosing to use open-source tools is essential for better evaluation and visualization of qualitative and quantitative data in review studies.â¢The combination of methods and data in the systematic review (scientific, political documents. and databases) supports the proposal of robust theoretical and conceptual frameworks.
RESUMO
Science and art have been connected for centuries. With the development of new computational methods, new scientific disciplines have emerged, such as computational chemistry, and related fields, such as cheminformatics. Chemoinformatics is grounded on the chemical space concept: a multi-descriptor space in which chemical structures are described. In several practical applications, visual representations of the chemical space of compound datasets are low-dimensional plots helpful in identifying patterns. However, the authors propose that the plots can also be used as artistic expressions. This manuscript introduces an approach to merging art with chemoinformatics through visual and artistic representations of chemical space. As case studies, we portray the chemical space of food chemicals and other compounds to generate visually appealing graphs with twofold benefits: sharing chemical knowledge and developing pieces of art driven by chemoinformatics. The art driven by chemical space visualization will help increase the application of chemistry and art and contribute to general education and dissemination of chemoinformatics and chemistry through artistic expressions. All the code and data sets to reproduce the visual representation of the chemical space presented in the manuscript are freely available at https://github.com/DIFACQUIM/Art-Driven-by-Visual-Representations-of-Chemical-Space- . Scientific contribution: Chemical space as a concept to create digital art and as a tool to train and introduce students to cheminformatics.

BACKGROUND: Transvenous embolization (TVE) of brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs) is an emerging endovascular technique that has shown high cure rates in selected cases. The rationale of our study was to determine authorship and worldwide institutional trends and contributions to the knowledge in this topic. METHODS: Web of Science database was used. A total of 63 articles were included based on predefined inclusion criteria, which were manually reviewed. The bibliometric analysis involved the use of quantitative bibliometric indicators and network analysis with co-authorship and co-occurrence of terms, which were performed using the bibliometrix package in R and VOSviewer, respectively. RESULTS: The first article was published in 2010, with the largest number of articles published in 2022 (10 articles). The average number of citations per document was 11.38, and the annual growth rate was 14.35%. The top 10 authors with the most scientific production on TVE of bAVMs were from France, and the most cited study was published by Iosif C in 2015, followed by Consoli A in 2013, and Chen CJ in 2018. Journal of Neurointerventional Surgery was the journal with the most articles published. The most commonly used keywords were dural arteriovenous fistula, Onyx, vascular disorders, and neurological surgery around 2016, and intervention around 2021. CONCLUSIONS: TVE of bAVMs is an emerging technique. Our search identified some scientific articles, without randomized clinical trials, but many case series from single institutions. French and German institutions are the pioneers in the field, and further research is required in specialized endovascular centers.

RESUMO
Voltage-gated sodium channels (Nav) are membrane proteins essential to initiating and propagating action potential in neurons and other excitable cells. For a given organism there are often multiple, specialized sodium channels found in different tissues, whose mutations can cause deleterious effects observed in numerous diseases. Consequently, there is high medical and pharmacological interest in these proteins. Scientific literature often uses membrane diagrams to depict important patterns in these channels including the six transmembrane segments (S1-S6) present in four different homologous domains (D1-D4), the S4 voltage sensors, the pore-lining residue segments and the ion selectivity filter residues, glycosylation and phosphorylation residues, toxin binding sites and the inactivation loop, among others. Most of these diagrams are illustrated either digitally or by hand and programs specifically dedicated to the interactive and data-friendly generation of such visualizations are scarce or non-existing. This paper describes Naview, an open-source javascript visualization compatible with modern web browsers for the dynamic drawing and annotation of voltage-gated sodium channels membrane diagrams based on the D3.js library. By using a graphical user interface and combining user-defined annotations with optional UniProt code as inputs, Naview allows the creation and customization of membrane diagrams. In this interface, a user can also map and display important sodium channel properties, residues, regions and their relationships through symbols, colors, and edge connections. Such features can facilitate data exploration and provide fast, high-quality publication-ready graphics for this highly active area of research.
RESUMO
Microbial communities' taxonomic and functional diversity has been broadly studied since sequencing technologies enabled faster and cheaper data obtainment. Nevertheless, the programming skills needed and the amount of software available may be overwhelming to someone trying to analyze these data. Here, we present a comprehensive and straightforward pipeline that takes shotgun metagenomics data through the needed steps to obtain valuable results. The raw data goes through a quality control process, metagenomic assembly, binning (the obtention of single genomes from a metagenome), taxonomic assignment, and taxonomic diversity analysis and visualization.

INTRODUCTION: Chemical space is a general conceptual framework that addresses the diversity of molecules and it has various applications. Moreover, chemical space is a cornerstone of chemoinformatics. In response to the increase in the set of chemical compounds in databases, generators of chemical structures, and tools to calculate molecular descriptors, novel approaches to generate visual representations of chemical space are emerging and evolving. AREAS COVERED: The current state of chemical space in drug design and discovery is reviewed. The topics discussed herein include advances for efficient navigation in chemical space, the use of this concept in assessing the diversity of different data sets, exploring structure-property/activity relationships for one or multiple endpoints, and compound library design. Recent advances in methodologies for generating visual representations of chemical space have been highlighted, thereby emphasizing open-source methods. EXPERT OPINION: Quantitative and qualitative generation and analysis of chemical space require novel approaches for handling the increasing number of molecules and their information available in chemical databases (including emerging ultra-large libraries). Chemical space is a conceptual framework that goes beyond visual representation in low dimensions. However, the graphical representation of chemical space has several practical applications in drug discovery and beyond.

BACKGROUND: The Brazilian healthcare system is a large and complex system, specially considering its mixed public and private funding. The incidence of syphilis has increased in the last four years, in spite of the presence of an effective and available treatment. Furthermore, syphilis takes part in a group of disorders of compulsory notification to the public health surveillance. The epidemiological implications are especially important during pregnancy since it can lead to complications, related to prematurity stillbirth and miscarriage, in addition to congenital syphilis, characterized by multisystem involved in the newborn. METHODS: The Action Research methodology was applied to address the complexity of the syphilis surveillance scenario in Pernambuco, Brazil. Iterative learning cycles were used, resulting in six cycles, followed by a formal validation of an operational version of the syphilis Trigram visualisation at the end of the process. The original data source was analyzed and prepared to be used without any new data or change in the ordinary procedure of the current system. RESULTS: The main result of this work is the production of a Syphilis Trigram: a domain-specific infographic for presenting gestational data and birth data. The second contribution of this work is the Average Trigram, an organized pie chart which synthesizes the Syphilis Trigram relationship in an aggregated way. The visualization of both graphics is presented in an Infographic User Interface, a tool that gathers an infographic broad visualization aspect to data visualization. These interfaces also gather selections and filters tools to assist and refine the presented information. The user can experience a specific case-by-case view, in addition to an aggregated perspective according to the cities monitored by the system. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed domain-specific visualization amplifies the understanding of each syphilis case and the overall characteristics of cases of a chosen city. This new information produced by the Trigram can help clarify the reinfection/relapse cases, optimize resource allocation and enhance the syphilis healthcare policies without the need of new data. Thus, this enables the health surveillance professionals to see the broad tendency, understand the key patterns through visualization, and take action in a feasible time.

OBJECTIVE: To identify and evaluate the indexed studies that allow us to understand the implications of imaging studies in MRI and PET/CT related to COVID-19 research. METHODS: Scoping review. Articles in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (WoS) were scanned from 2019 to 2021 with COVID-19, MRI, and PET-CT as keywords. EndNote software and manual checking removed the duplicated references. Our assessment includes citation, bibliometric, keyword network, and statistical analyses using descriptive statistics and correlations. Highlighted variables were publication year, country, journals, and authorship. RESULTS: Only 326 papers were included. The most cited article reached 669 cites; this number represented 21.71% of 3081 citations. The top-15 cited authors received 1787 citations, which represented 58% of the total cites. These authors had affiliations from ten countries (Belgium, China, France, Italy, Japan, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom (UK), and the USA). The top-30 journals were cited 2762 times, representing 89.65% of the total cites. Only five journals were cited more than 100 times; Int J Infect Dis had the most significant number of citations (674). Some of the unexpected keywords were encephalitis, stroke, microbleeds, myocarditis. CONCLUSION: COVID-19 pandemic is still spreading worldwide, and the knowledge about its different facets continues advancing. MRI and PET/CT are being used in more than 50% of the selected studies; research trends span seven categories, no only the diagnostic but others like socio-economic impact and pathogenesis Developed countries had an advantage by having hospitals with more resources, including MRI and PET/CT facilities in the same institution to supplement basic assessment in patients with COVID-19. RESUMO
Movement analysis provides a vast amount of data, which, frequently, are not used in the clinical decision-making process. For example, traditional gait data visualization is based on a time-based display of joint angles, but part of the information is lost when these time-series are averaged across different gait strides. Horizon graph is a data display method that increases the density of time-series data by horizontally dividing and layering multiple filled line graphs. This higher data density increases the amount of information displayed in the same graph and, consequently, enables visual data comparisons between multiple time series. Horizon graph of kinematic data allows displaying several cycles of different joints and their respective continuous symmetry ratio between sides. The aim of this work is to introduce the Horizon graph as a method to analyze kinematic gait data and help to characterize its symmetry. Examples of Horizon graph application to running is offered. Horizon graph may prove to be a useful clinical tool to visualize kinematic time-series and facilitate their clinical interpretation.â¢Continuous gait time series is a powerful tool for clinical analysis.â¢Horizon graph, higher data density graph, increases the information displayed.â¢Horizon graph is a clinical tool to visualize kinematic curves.
RESUMO
The significant increase in scientific evidence production has led to the creation of methods to facilitate evidence review and synthesis. This has turned, this has resulted in the emergence of different designs depending on the reviews objective. Evidence gap maps constitute a novel approach for literature review. They are thematic collections of a broad field of evidence, using a systematic search strategy that identifies gaps in knowledge and engages, early on, the target audience to design a friendly graphic product. Evidence maps are a tool to be considered in the roster of options available for research funders in that they are particularly useful for evidence-based decision-making and evidence-based policy development. The most commonly used formats to display the findings of evidence gap search designs are the bubble plot and the intervention-outcome framework. This article corresponds to the sixth of a series of narrative reviews on general topics of biostatistics and clinical epidemiology. The purpose of this review is to describe the principal features of evidence gap maps, highlighting their main objectives and utility, exploring the most commonly used mapping formats, and comparing this approach with other evidence synthesis designs.

BACKGROUND: Care continuum models (also known as care cascade models) are used by researchers and health system planners to identify potential gaps or disparities in healthcare, but these models have limited applications to complex or chronic clinical conditions. Cyclical continuum models that integrate more complex clinical information and that are displayed using circular data visualization tools may help to overcome these limitations. We performed proof-of-concept cyclical continuum modeling for one such group of conditions-musculoskeletal infections-and assessed for racial and ethnic disparities across the complex care process related to these infections. METHODS: Cyclical continuum modeling was performed in a diverse, retrospective cohort of 1648 patients with musculoskeletal infections, including osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, and/or infectious myositis, in the University of New Mexico Health System. Logistic regression was used to estimate the relative odds of each element or outcome of care in the continuum. Results were visualized using circularized, map-like images depicting the continuum of care. RESULTS: Racial and ethnic disparities differed at various phases in the care process. Hispanic/Latinx patients had evidence of healthcare disparities across the continuum, including diabetes mellitus [odds ratio (OR) 2.04, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.61, 2.60 compared to a white non-Hispanic reference category]; osteomyelitis (OR 1.28, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.63); and amputation (OR 1.48; 95% CI: 1.10, 2.00). Native American patients had evidence of disparities early in the continuum (diabetes mellitus OR 3.59, 95% CI: 2.63, 4.89; peripheral vascular disease OR 2.50; 95% CI: 1.45, 4.30; osteomyelitis OR 1.43; 95% CI: 1.05, 1.95) yet lower odds of later-stage complications (amputation OR 1.02; 95% CI: 0.69, 1.52). African American/Black non-Hispanic patients had higher odds of primary risk factors (diabetes mellitus OR 2.70; 95% CI: 1.41, 5.19; peripheral vascular disease OR 4.96; 95% CI: 2.06, 11.94) and later-stage outcomes (amputation OR 2.74; 95% CI: 1.38, 5.45) but not intervening, secondary risk factors (osteomyelitis OR 0.79; 95% CI: 0.42, 1.48). CONCLUSIONS: By identifying different structural and clinical barriers to care that may be experienced by groups of patients interacting with the healthcare system, cyclical continuum modeling may be useful for the study of healthcare disparities.

Pangenome analysis is fundamental to explore molecular evolution occurring in bacterial populations. Here, we introduce Pagoo, an R framework that enables straightforward handling of pangenome data. The encapsulated nature of Pagoo allows the storage of complex molecular and phenotypic information using an object-oriented approach. This facilitates to go back and forward to the data using a single programming environment and saving any stage of analysis (including the raw data) in a single file, making it sharable and reproducible. Pagoo provides tools to query, subset, compare, visualize, and perform statistical analyses, in concert with other microbial genomics packages available in the R ecosystem. As working examples, we used 1,000 Escherichia coli genomes to show that Pagoo is scalable, and a global dataset of Campylobacter fetus genomes to identify evolutionary patterns and genomic markers of host-adaptation in this pathogen.

BACKGROUND: Cross-border malaria is a significant obstacle to achieving malaria control and elimination worldwide. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to build a cross-border surveillance system that can make comparable and qualified data available to all parties involved in malaria control between French Guiana and Brazil. METHODS: Data reconciliation rules based on expert knowledge were defined and applied to the heterogeneous data provided by the existing malaria surveillance systems of both countries. Visualization dashboards were designed to facilitate progressive data exploration, analysis, and interpretation. Dedicated advanced open source and robust software solutions were chosen to facilitate solution sharing and reuse. RESULTS: A database gathering the harmonized data on cross-border malaria epidemiology is updated monthly with new individual malaria cases from both countries. Online dashboards permit a progressive and user-friendly visualization of raw data and epidemiological indicators, in the form of time series, maps, and data quality indexes. The monitoring system was shown to be able to identify changes in time series that are related to control actions, as well as differentiated changes according to space and to population subgroups. CONCLUSIONS: This cross-border monitoring tool could help produce new scientific evidence on cross-border malaria dynamics, implementing cross-border cooperation for malaria control and elimination, and can be quickly adapted to other cross-border contexts.

Herein we introduce the constellation plots as a general approach that merges different and complementary molecular representations to enhance the information contained in a visual representation and analysis of chemical space. The method is based on a combination of a sub-structure based representation and classification of compounds with a "classical" coordinate-based representation of chemical space. A distinctive outcome of the method is that organizing the compounds in analog series leads to the formation of groups of molecules, aka "constellations" in chemical space. The novel approach is general and can be used to rapidly identify, for instance, insightful and "bright" Structure-Activity Relationships (StARs) in chemical space that are easy to interpret. This kind of analysis is expected to be especially useful for lead identification in large datasets of unannotated molecules, such as those obtained through high-throughput screening. We demonstrate the application of the method using two datasets of focused inhibitors designed against DNMTs and AKT1.

AbstractIntroduction: This paper aims to develop a data warehouse (AD-SISCOLO) in order to support the management of the cervical cancer screening program in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro/Brazil. As a part of the management process, the program managers of the municipality perform tedious manual work in order to calculate a series of performance indicators and then take decisions based on them. Methods AD-SISCOLO was implemented using the Pentaho BI Suite Business Intelligence Platform and the MySQL database management system. The indicators to be calculated and visualized in the tool were based on the municipal data of the cytopathology and histopathology tests from January 2012 until December 2014, which was obtained from the Information System of Cervical Cancer (SISCOLO) after a record linkage process. The follow-up indicators were based on a simplified version of the Brazilian guidelines for the cervical cancer screening. Results AD-SISCOLO allows the visualization of a set of test-based and follow-up indicators from different views and dimensions, which enable managers to monitor all the phases of the screening process and to identify the process' failures. Conclusions Compared with the current available environments in Brazil, AD-SISCOLO is unique in its visualization of the follow-up indicators of groups of women, according to their test results and age. Thereby it provides presentation flexibility to suit the program manager's needs.
